Characterization of Re-188–Sn microparticles used for synovitis treatment

Rhenium-188 labeled tin (Sn) microparticles were developed for pain palliation therapy in the patients suffering from synovitis with acute pain. The rhenium tin microparticles were prepared using stannous chloride and freshly eluted (188)ReO(4)(-) from (188)W/(188)Re generator. The aggregated colloidal particles, packed in a spherical form after boiling for 90-120min were analyzed using electron microscope. The size, surface morphology and stability of microparticles were analyzed by changing temperature and volume conditions. The small colloidal particles clustered and formed spherical microparticles. The 90% of microparticles were in 5-10microm range, after 90min and 120min of boiling. The radiolabeling efficiency was improved to 98% after centrifugation for 10min at 3500rpm. The formulations were stable but the increase in volume had inverse effect on labeling efficiency. No leak was observed from knee area up to 24h with 15-20mCi injection of (188)Re-Sn microparticles. The relief in treated patients, from the pain and inflammation, was observed clinically and by (99m)Tc-MDP perfusion scan.

Photocatalytic performance of Sn-doped TiO2 nanostructured mono and double layer thin films for Malachite Green dye degradation under UV and vis-lights

Nanostructure Sn(4+)-doped TiO(2) based mono and double layer thin films, contain 50% solid ratio of TiO(2) in coating have been prepared on glass surfaces by spin-coating technique. Their photocatalytic performances were tested for degradation of Malachite Green dye in solution under UV and vis irradiation. Sn(4+)-doped nano-TiO(2) particle a doping ratio of about 5[Sn(4+)/Ti(OBu(n))(4); mol/mol%] has been synthesized by hydrotermal process at 225 degrees C. The structure, surface and optical properties of the thin films and/or the particles have been investigated by XRD, BET and UV/vis/NIR techniques. The results showed that the double layer coated glass surfaces have a very high photocatalytic performance than the other one under UV and vis lights. The results also proved that the hydrothermally synthesized nano-TiO(2) particles are fully anatase crystalline form and are easily dispersed in water. The results also reveal that the coated surfaces have hydrophilic property.

Radicals masquerading as electrophiles: dual orbital effects in nitrogen-philic acyl radical cyclization and related addition reactions

Free-radical chemistry has come a long way in a relatively short period of time. The synthetic practitioner takes for granted the wealth of mechanistic and rate constant data now available and can apply free-radical techniques to the synthesis of many different classes of target molecule with confidence. Despite this, there are still mechanistic anomalies that need to be addressed. This Account highlights recent work involving nucleophilic radicals with low-lying unoccupied orbitals, such as acyl, oxyacyl, silyl, stannyl, and germyl radicals. Through interesting singly occupied molecular orbital (SOMO)-pi* and highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO)-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) interactions during these reactions, the radicals involved are able to mask as electrophiles, providing high levels of regiocontrol and efficient methods for the synthesis of important heterocycles.

DNA binding studies of novel Copper(II) complexes containing L-tryptophan as chiral auxiliary: in vitro antitumor activity of Cu-Sn2 complex in human neuroblastoma cells

Novel trinuclear complexes C23H31N6O6CuSn2Cl5 [1], C23H31N6O6CuZr2Cl5 [2], C23H31N6O6ZnSn2Cl5 [3], and C23H31N6O6ZnZr2Cl5 [4] were synthesized and characterized by spectroscopic (IR, 1H, 13C, 2D COSY, and 119Sn NMR, EPR, UV-vis, ESI-MS) and analytical methods. In complexes 1-4, the geometry of copper and zinc metal ions were described as square-based pyramidal with l-tryptophan coordinated to copper/zinc via carboxylate group while Sn/Zr was present in the hexacoordinate environment. The interaction of 1 and 2 with calf thymus DNA in Tris buffer was studied by electronic absorption titration, luminescence titration, cyclic voltammetry, circular dichroism, and viscometric measurements. The emission quenching of these complexes by [Fe(CN)6]4- depressed greatly when bound to DNA. Observed changes in the circular dichoric spectra of DNA in presence of 1 and 2 support the strong binding of complexes with DNA. The relative specific viscosity of DNA bound to 1 and 2 decreased, indicating that the complexes bind to DNA via covalent binding. The results reveal that the extent of DNA binding of 1 was greater than that of 2. To evaluate the mechanistic pathway of DNA inhibition, counting experiments and MTT assay were employed to assess the induction of apoptosis by 1. Western blot analysis of whole cell lysates and mitochondrial fractions with Bcl-2 and p-53 family proteins and caspase-3 colorimetry assay were also carried out on a human neuroblastoma cell line SY5Y.

Dual-Reagent Catalysis within Ir−Sn Domain: Highly Selective Alkylation of Arenes and Heteroarenes with Aromatic Aldehydes

Reactions of arenes and heteroarenes with aromatic aldehydes proceeded smoothly in the presence of a catalytic combination of [Ir(COD)Cl]2-SnCl4 to afford the corresponding triarylmethane derivatives (TRAMs) in high yields. This 100% TRAM selective transformation is clean and eliminates the use of acid systems.

Secondary Benzylation with Benzyl Alcohols Catalyzed by A High-Valent Heterobimetallic Ir−Sn Complex

A highly efficient secondary benzylation procedure has been demonstrated using a high-valent heterobimetallic complex [Ir2(COD)2(SnCl3)2(Cl)2(mu-Cl)2] 1 as the catalyst in 1,2-dichloroethane to afford the corresponding benzylated products in moderate to excellent yields. The reaction was performed not only with carbon nucleophiles (arenes and heteroarenes) but also with oxygen (alcohol), nitrogen (amide and sulfonamide), and sulfur (thiol) nucleophiles. Mechanistic investigation showed the intermediacy of the ether in this reaction. An electrophilic mechanism is proposed from Hammett correlation.

A kit method for the high level synthesis of [211At]MABG

meta-[(211)At]Astatobenzylguanidine ([(211)At]MABG), an analogue of meta-iodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) labeled with the alpha-emitter (211)At, targets the norepinephrine transporter. Because MABG has been shown to have excellent characteristics in preclinical studies, it has been considered to be a promising targeted radiotherapeutic for the treatment of tumors such as micrometastatic neuroblastoma that overexpress the norepinephrine transporter. To facilitate clinical evaluation of this agent, a convenient method for the high level synthesis of [(211)At]MABG that is adaptable for kit formulation has been developed. A tin precursor anchored to a solid-support was treated with a methanolic solution of (211)At in the presence of a mixture of H(2)O(2)/HOAc as the oxidant; [(211)At]MABG was isolated by simple solid-phase extraction. By using C-18 solid-phase extraction, the radiochemical yield from 25 batches was 63+/-13%; however, loss of radioactivity during evaporation of the methanolic solution was a problem. This difficulty was avoided by use of a cation exchange resin cartridge for isolation of [(211)At]MABG, which resulted in radiochemical yields of 63+/-9% in a shorter duration of synthesis. The radiochemical purity was more than 90% and no chemical impurity has been detected. The final doses were sterile and apyrogenic. These results demonstrate that [(211)At]MABG can be prepared via a kit method at radioactivity levels anticipated for initiation of clinical studies.

Elastic deformation behaviour of Ti-24Nb-4Zr-7.9Sn for biomedical applications

In this paper, the elastic deformation behaviour of a recently developed beta-type titanium alloy Ti-24Nb-4Zr-7.9Sn (wt.%) that consists of non-toxic elements and is intended for biomedical applications is described. Tensile tests show that this alloy in the as hot-rolled state exhibits peculiar non-linear elastic behaviour with maximum recoverable strain up to 3.3% and incipient Young's modulus of 42GPa. Solution treatment at high temperature has trivial effect on super-elasticity but decreases strength and slightly increases the incipient Young's modulus. Ageing treatment in the (alpha+beta) two-phase field increases both strength and Young's modulus and results in a combination of high strength and relatively low elastic modulus. In spite of the formation of the alpha phase, short time ageing has no effect on super-elasticity, whereas the non-linear elastic behaviour transforms gradually to normal linear elasticity with the increase of ageing time. We suggest sluggish, partially reversible processes of stress-induced phase transformation and/or incipient kink bands as the origin of the above peculiar elastic behaviour.

Industrial Utilization of Tin-Initiated Resorbable Polymers: Synthesis on a Large Scale with a Low Amount of Initiator Residue

This article presents the successful large-batch synthesis of a resorbable polymer with a minimal amount of residual tin. Ring-opening polymerization of epsilon-caprolactone was performed in toluene, with a tin (IV) alkoxide as the initiator. A number of parameters were varied in order to study the polymerization with respect to the purity of solvent, batch size, and the residual amount of tin in the polymers. The synthesis of epsilon-caprolactone in undistilled toluene with 1-di-n-butyl-1-stanna-2,5-dioxacyclopentane as the initiator was successfully performed in batches of 5, 20, and 50 g with no differences in the final conversion, molecular weight, or molecular-weight distribution. The residual amount of tin was significantly reduced from over 1000 to 23 ppm. This study examines the industrial utility of the materials regarding the size and purity of the synthesis.

Photocatalytic performance of Sn-doped and undoped TiO2 nanostructured thin films under UV and vis-lights

Sn-doped and undoped nano-TiO(2) particles have been synthesized by hydrotermal process without solvent at 200 degrees C in 1h. Nanostructure-TiO(2) based thin films have been prepared on glass substrate by spin-coating technique. The structure, surface morphology and optical properties of the thin films and the particles have been investigated by element analysis and XRD, SEM, BET and UV-vis-NIR techniques. The photocatalytic performance of the films were tested for degradation of Malachite Green dye in solution under UV and vis-lights. The results showed that (a) hydrothermally synthesized nano-TiO(2) particles are fully anatase crystalline form and are easily dispersed in water, (b) the coated surfaces have nearly super-hydrophilic properties and, (c) the doping of transition metal ion efficiently improved the photocatalytic performance of the TiO(2) thin film.

Carbonyl Allenylation/Free Radical Cyclization Sequence as a New Regio- and Stereocontrolled Access to Bi- and Tricyclic β-Lactams

A novel approach to racemic and enantiopure nonconventional fused bi- and tricyclic beta-lactams has been developed by using regio- and stereocontrolled intramolecular free radical reactions in monocyclic 2-azetidinone-tethered allenynes and haloallenes. The access to allene cyclization precursors was achieved by metal-mediated carbonyl allenylation of appropriately substituted 4-oxoazetidine-2-carbaldehydes in an aqueous environment. The tin-promoted radical cyclizations of allene-beta-lactams are totally regioselective for the central allenic carbon, providing bi- and tricyclic beta-lactams containing a seven-membered ring.

Synthesis of a Selenidostannate(IV), [Mn(tepa)·Sn3Se7]n, Demonstrating the Transformation from Achiral to Chiral and Dimeric to Polymeric Structure

Although a number of chalcogenostannates have been obtained by using [M(amine)m]n+ as the structure director, these materials with chiral metal complex ions are usually achiral because they are a racemic mix of chiral complex cations. A chiral selenidostannate, [Mn(tepa).Sn3Se7]n (1; tepa = tetraethylenepentamine), containing incorporated [Mn(tepa)]2+ units, is reported herein. The unique structure is just like a grapevine appended with chiral grapes. In the same reaction, a centrosymmetric compound, [Mn(tepa)]2(mu2-Sn2Se6) (2), in which the Sn2Se64- anion acts as a bridge coordinating to [Mn(tepa)]2+ cations, has also been obtained. This is a reaction-time-related process in which compound 2 transformed gradually to 1 after prolonging the reaction time. This phenomenon demonstrates a transformation from achiral to chiral and dimeric to polymeric selenidostannate.

The effect of hydrogen peroxide concentration on metal ion release from dental amalgam

OBJECTIVES

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of hydrogen peroxide (HP) concentration on metal ion release from dental amalgam.

METHODS

Dental amalgam discs (n=25) were prepared by packing amalgam into cylindrical plastic moulds (10 mm diameter and 2 mm height). The discs were divided into five equal groups and each group was immersed in 20 ml of either 0%, 1%, 3%, 10% or 30% HP solution for 24 h at 37 degrees C. Samples were taken for metal ion release determination (Hg, Ag, Sn and Cu) using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The surface roughness of each disc was measured before and after bleaching.

RESULTS

The differences in concentration of metal ions released after treatment with 0% (control) and each of 1%, 3%, 10% and 30% HP were statistically significant (p<0.05). Metal ion release for the elements (Hg, Ag, Sn and Cu) increased with exposure to increasing concentrations of HP. Surface roughness measurements of the samples before and after treatments with HP solutions were not significantly different (p>0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

Exposure to HP bleaching agent was associated with increased metal ion released from dental amalgams compared to treatment with a control solution. Ion release was in proportion to the peroxide concentration tested, with the highest concentration associated with the greatest metal ion release for all elements investigated.

Intramolecular Chalcogen−Tin Interactions in (o-MeE-C6H4)CH2SnPh3-nCln (E = S, O; n = 0, 1, 2), Characterized by X-ray Diffraction and 119Sn Solution and Solid-State NMR

Organotin(IV) compounds of the type (o-MeE-C6H4)CH2SnPh3-nCln were synthesized, E = O, n = 0 (1), n = 1 (2), n = 2 (3) and E = S, n = 0 (4), n = 1 (5), n = 2 (6). The complexes exhibit significant trigonal bipyramidal pentacoordination at tin as a consequence of intramolecular Sn-O (1-3) and Sn-S (4-6) interactions upon substitution of the phenyl groups by chloro groups. The intramolecular Sn-O distances in 1, 2, and 3 are 83%, 75%, and 79% of the sum of the van der Waals radii. The equivalent Sn-S values for 4, 5, and 6 are 90%, 73%, and 71%, respectively. The geometry of compound 3 is complicated by intermolecular dimerization via bridging chlorines creating a distorted octahedral geometry at tin. The related dichloro sulfur compound 6 also exhibits an intermolecular association in the form of Sn-Cl-H hydrogen bonding leading to a polymeric structure in the solid state. CPMAS 119Sn NMR spectroscopy suggests that the intramolecular Sn-E interactions persist in solution and also facilitated the discovery of a new crystalline form of 4, 4', that contains a Sn-S distance which is 95% the sum of the van der Waals radii.

Surface studies of gas sensing metal oxides

The relation of surface science studies of single crystal metal oxides to gas sensing applications is reviewed. Most metal oxide gas sensors are used to detect oxidizing or reducing gases and therefore this article focuses on surface reduction processes and the interaction of oxygen with these surfaces. The systems that are discussed are: (i) the oxygen vacancy formation on the surface of the ion conductor CeO(2)(111); (ii) interaction of oxygen with TiO(2) (both adsorption processes and the incorporation of oxygen into the TiO(2)(110) lattice are discussed); (iii) the varying surface composition of SnO(2)(101) and its consequence for the adsorption of water; and (iv) Cu modified ZnO(0001)-Zn surfaces and its interaction with oxygen. These examples are chosen to give a comprehensive overview of surface science studies of different kinds of gas sensing materials and to illustrate the potential that surface science studies have to give fundamental insight into gas sensing phenomena.

A facile way for preparing tin nanoparticles from bulk tin via ultrasound dispersion

In this paper, we reported a facile and rapid process to prepare tin nanoparticles from bulk tin via ultrasound dispersion. The morphology and structure of synthesized tin nanoparticles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectrum (XPS) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results show that the morphology of tin nanoparticles is spherical and the structure of tin nanoparticles has the same crystal structure as the bulk tin. In addition, the tribological property of tin nanoparticles as additives in oil is evaluated on a four-ball tester and the results show that tin nanoparticles exhibit good performance in wear.

Adsorption and oxidation of ethanol on colloid-based Pt/C, PtRu/C and Pt3Sn/C catalysts: In situ FTIR spectroscopy and on-line DEMS studies

The interaction of colloid-based, carbon supported Pt/C (40 wt%), PtRu/C (45 wt%) and Pt3Sn/C (24 wt%) catalysts with ethanol and their performance for ethanol electrooxidation were investigated in model studies by electrochemical, in situ infrared spectroscopy and on-line differential electrochemical mass spectrometry measurements. The combined application of in situ spectroscopic techniques on realistic catalysts and under realistic reaction (DEMS, IR) and transport conditions (DEMS) yields new insight on mechanistic details of the reaction on these catalysts under the above reaction and transport conditions. Based on these results, the addition of Sn or Ru, though beneficial for the overall activity for ethanol oxidation, does not enhance the activity for C-C bond breaking. Dissociative adsorption of ethanol to form CO2 is more facile on the Pt/C catalyst than on PtRu/C and Pt3Sn/C catalysts within the potential range of technical interests (<0.6 V), but Pt/C is rapidly blocked by an inhibiting CO adlayer. In all cases acetaldehyde and acetic acid are dominant products, CO2 formation contributes less than 2% to the total current. The higher ethanol oxidation current density on the Pt3Sn/C catalyst at these potentials results from higher yields of C2 products, not from an improved complete ethanol oxidation to CO2.

Spectrofluorimetric determination of tin in canned foods

A simple and sensitive spectrofluorimetric method for the determination of tin as its complex with 1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphtol (PAN) in a mixed micellar medium was developed. The mixture of a non-ionic surfactant, Triton X-100 and an anionic surfactant, bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (AOT) was used as a suitable micellar medium for solubilizing of complex and ligand and also for enhancing the fluorescence intensity of complex. In the optimum experimental conditions the maximum excitation and emission wavelengths of Sn-PAN complex were 300 and 360 nm, respectively. The calibration graph was linear in the range of 0.01-0.8 microg ml(-1) with a correlation coefficient of 0.9991. The detection limit was found to be 2 ng ml(-1). The relative standard deviation of the method for the determination of 0.1 microg ml(-1) tin was calculated to be 0.74%. The interferences caused by the presence of a number of common cations and anions were studied. Finally, the method was successfully applied to the determination of tin in various canned products.

The use of soil survey data to determine the magnitude and extent of historic metal deposition related to atmospheric smelter emissions across Humberside, UK

When a smelter has ceased operation, and in the absence of historical emission data, high-resolution geochemical surveys of the soil can reveal historical loads to the surrounding land. We use measurements of lead and tin in the soil at two depths to estimate the total quantities of these metals deposited on 286 km(2) of land around the former Capper Pass smelter (north-east England). We subtracted median background concentrations for three parent material types outside the region of deposition from the data within it. We then constructed a statistical model of metal deposition based on the adjusted data. The data were from irregularly spaced sites and were strongly skewed with a spatial trend. We mapped the concentrations of the metals by lognormal universal kriging with the parameters for the trend and residuals modelled simultaneously by residual maximum likelihood (REML). The maps suggest that metal was deposited up to 24 km to the north-east of the smelter by the prevailing wind. We estimated total excess metal in the soil over the area of deposition to be 2500 t of lead and 830 t of tin.
