Abstract
Using data collected with the CLEO III detector at the CESR e+e- collider, we report on a first observation of the decay Upsilon(3S)-->tau+tau-, and precisely measure the ratio of branching fractions of Upsilon(nS), n=1, 2, 3, to tau+tau- and mu+mu- final states, finding agreement with expectations from lepton universality. We derive absolute branching fractions for these decays, and also set a limit on the influence of a low mass CP-odd Higgs boson in the decay of the Upsilon(1S).

Abstract
For old-intermediate landfill leachate, the high concentrations of ammonium and low BOD/COD (B/C) ratios are the main obstacles to biological treatment. Magnesium ammonium phosphate (MAP) precipitation (struvite precipitation) and Fenton oxidation were employed as pretreatment options on this type of leachate. Results revealed that at optimum operating conditions of pH 9 and MAP ratio of 1:1:1, ammonium and COD were reduced by 97.8% from 2132 mg l(-1) to 46 mg l(-1) and by 50.0% from 4113 mg l(-1) to 2057 mg l(-1), respectively using struvite precipitation. COD was lowered by 76% and ammonium by 6.3% using Fenton oxidation at optimized conditions of H2O2 dosage of 3500 mg l(-1), Fe2+ dosage of 437.5 mg l(-1), pH 4, a mass ratio of 8 for H2O2: Fe2+ dosage and reaction time of 30 minutes. At their respective operating conditions, the B/C ratios for both pre-treatment methods were increased from 0.35 in the raw leachate to 0.66 and 0.71, for MAP precipitation and Fenton oxidation respectively, values that are suitable for biological treatment. This study shows that struvite precipitation is a suitable pretreatment option resulting in the simultaneous removal of ammonium and organic matter in old-intermediate landfill leachate.

Abstract
Two morphological forms of programmed cell death, apoptosis and autophagic cell death, remove unneeded or damaged cells during animal development. Although the mechanisms that regulate apoptosis are well studied, little is known about autophagic cell death. A shotgun proteome analysis of purified dying larval salivary glands in Drosophila was used to identify proteins that are expressed during autophagic programmed cell death. A total of 5661 proteins were identified from stages before and after the onset of cell death. Analyses of these data enabled us to identify proteins from a number of interesting categories including regulators of transcription, the apoptosis, autophagy, lysosomal, and ubiquitin proteasome degradation pathways, and proteins involved in growth control. Several of the identified proteins, including the serine/threonine kinase warts (Wts), were not detected using whole-genome DNA microarrays, providing support for the importance of such high-throughput proteomic technology. Wts regulates cell-cycle arrest and apoptosis, and significantly, mutations in wts prevent destruction of salivary glands.

Abstract
Identification of antigenic sites on proteins is of vital importance for developing synthetic peptide vaccines, immunodiagnostic tests and antibody production. Currently, most of the prediction algorithms rely on amino acid propensity scales using a sliding window approach. These methods are oversimplified and yield poor predicted results in practice. In this paper, a novel scale, called the amino acid pair (AAP) antigenicity scale, is proposed that is based on the finding that B-cell epitopes favor particular AAPs. It is demonstrated that, using SVM (support vector machine) classifier, the AAP antigenicity scale approach has much better performance than the existing scales based on the single amino acid propensity. The AAP antigenicity scale can reflect some special sequence-coupled feature in the B-cell epitopes, which is the essence why the new approach is superior to the existing ones. It is anticipated that with the continuous increase of the known epitope data, the power of the AAP antigenicity scale approach will be further enhanced.

Abstract
Activating mutations in the NOTCH1 gene have been found in about 60% of patients with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL). In order to study the molecular mechanisms by which altered Notch signaling induces leukemia, a zebrafish model of human NOTCH1-induced T-cell leukemia was generated. Seven of sixteen mosaic fish developed a T-cell lymphoproliferative disease at about 5 months. These neoplastic cells extensively invaded tissues throughout the fish and caused an aggressive and lethal leukemia when transplanted into irradiated recipient fish. However, stable transgenic fish exhibited a longer latency for leukemia onset. When the stable transgenic line was crossed with another line overexpressing the zebrafish bcl2 gene, the leukemia onset was dramatically accelerated, indicating synergy between the Notch pathway and the bcl2-mediated antiapoptotic pathway. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction analysis showed that Notch target genes such as her6 and her9 were highly expressed in NOTCH1-induced leukemias. The ability of this model to detect a strong interaction between NOTCH1 and bcl2 suggests that genetic modifier screens have a high likelihood of revealing other genes that can cooperate with NOTCH1 to induce T-ALL.

Abstract
Platelets are relatively short-lived, anucleated cells that are essential for proper hemostasis. The regulation of platelet survival in the circulation remains poorly understood. The process of platelet activation and senescence in vivo is associated with processes similar to those observed during apoptosis in nucleated cells, including loss of mitochondrial membrane potential, caspase activation, phosphatidylserine (PS) externalization, and cell shrinkage. ABT-737, a potent antagonist of Bcl-2, Bcl-X(L), and Bcl-w, induces apoptosis in nucleated cells dependent on these proteins for survival. In vivo, ABT-737 induces a reduction of circulating platelets that is maintained during drug therapy, followed by recovery to normal levels within several days after treatment cessation. Whole body scintography utilizing ([111])Indium-labeled platelets in dogs shows that ABT-737-induced platelet clearance is primarily mediated by the liver. In vitro, ABT-737 treatment leads to activation of key apoptotic processes including cytochrome c release, caspase-3 activation, and PS externalization in isolated platelets. Despite these changes, ABT-737 is ineffective in promoting platelet activation as measured by granule release markers and platelet aggregation. Taken together, these data suggest that ABT-737 induces an apoptosis-like response in platelets that is distinct from platelet activation and results in enhanced clearance in vivo by the reticuloendothelial system.

Abstract
In Streptomyces antibioticus, there are two genes TYRA and ORF438 required for the melanin biogenesis. To investigate whether expression of these two genes in cotton can change cotton fiber colour, we modified the TYRA and ORF438 genes to make their codon usage closer to the codon preference of cotton fiber genes. The resulting versions of these two genes were referred to as DTYRA and DORF438, respectively. Vacuolar targeting signals were also added to their ends. Under the cotton fiber specific LTP3 promoter, DORF438 and DTYRA were first transformed into model plant tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum). Molecular analyses showed that both the DORF438 and DTYRA genes were successfully expressed in transgenic plants, and the melanin deposition was observed in the trichomes of transgenic tobacco. Excitedly, when the same DORF438 and DTYRA expression cassettes were transformed into cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) by pollen tube pathway, the colour of cotton fiber changed from white to brown. Molecular analyses confirmed that both genes were transformed into cotton and expressed successfully. All these results indicate that the synthesized DOFR438 and DTYRA genes can work well in tobacco and cotton. Our study may provide a potential method for modifying the colour of cotton fiber.

Abstract
This report represents the conclusions of a Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee convened to evaluate the safety of various food additives, including flavouring agents, with a view to recommending acceptable daily intakes (ADIs) and to preparing specifications for identity and purity. The Committee also evaluated the risk posed by two food contaminants, with the aim of advising on risk management options for the purpose of public health protection. The first part of the report contains a general discussion of the principles governing the toxicological evaluation and assessment of intake of food additives (in particular flavouring agents) and contaminants. A summary follows of the Committee's evaluations of technical, toxicological and intake data for certain food additives (acidified sodium chlorite, asparaginase from Aspergillus oryzae expressed in Aspergillus oryzae, carrageenan and processed Eucheuma seaweed, cyclotetraglucose and cyclotetraglucose syrup, isoamylase from Pseudomonas amyloderamosa, magnesium sulfate, phospholipase A1 from Fusarium venenatum expressed in Aspergillus oryzae, sodium iron(III) ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and steviol glycosides); eight groups of related flavouring agents (linear and branched-chain aliphatic, unsaturated, unconjugated alcohols, aldehydes, acids and related esters; aliphatic acyclic and alicyclic terpenoid tertiary alcohols and structurally related substances; simple aliphatic and aromatic sulfides and thiols; aliphatic acyclic dials, trials and related substances; aliphatic acetals; sulfur-containing heterocyclic compounds; aliphatic and aromatic amines and amides; and aliphatic alicyclic linear alpha, beta -unsaturated di- and trienals and related alcohols, acids and esters); and two food contaminants (aflatoxin and ochratoxin A). Abstract
Carbon ions were introduced to radiation therapy due to their special physical and radiobiological properties. In heavy ion therapy, specification of radiation quality is an important issue and rapid calculations are often required for treatment planning. Because radiation qualities are closely related to microdosimetric spectra and parameters, this study is intended to provide microdosimetric parameters of carbon track-segments in the energy range from 50 MeV to 5 GeV. Monte-Carlo techniques are used to simulate track-segments of carbon ions in water. Microdosimetric quantities (the dose mean lineal energies) are calculated for the two components of the track-segment: the track-core formed by energy deposition of carbon ions and the track-penumbra (an extended region around the track-core produced by energy deposition of secondary electrons).

Abstract
This paper presents the results of an experimental study of the effects of surface texture on the interactions between human osteo-sarcoma (HOS) cells and Ti-6Al-4V. These include the Ti-6Al-4V with polished (smooth); Al(2)O(3) blasted (rough); and laser micro-grooved geometries with controlled spacings and depths. Immuno-fluorescence staining of adhesion proteins (actin and vinculin) was used to study the spreading and adhesion of HOS cells in 2 day culture experiments. Quantitative measures of adhesion were also obtained using an enzymatic detachment assay. The results are discussed within the context of existing theories of cell adhesion. The implications of the results are also examined for the design of textured surfaces in biomedical systems.

Abstract
AbstractRadiolarian skeletons are known from a limestone concretion collected from a black shale succession and from black cherts of the Yangtze Platform, China. Both occurrences are of earliest Cambrian age. The findings, reported in this paper, represent the oldest known fossil Radiolaria. Their spherical skeletons display a morphology typical of spherical radiolarians from Ordovician and younger faunas. This occurrence of radiolarians with radial symmetry and, most probably, a planktonic lifestyle can now be traced back into the earliest Cambrian. Thus, radiolarians have been part of the early oceanic plankton and likely played a significant role in the silica cycle of the oceans along with siliceous sponges.

Abstract
Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) instrumentation has been used to analyze wheat seed gliadins as an alternative to other established methods, including sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), capillary electrophoresis (CE), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), etc. The MALDI-TOF approach has shown to have many advantages such as high resolution, cost effectiveness and high throughput. MALDI-TOF-based gliadin profiles have been used for fast wheat cultivar identification. However, the genetic information represented by individual gliadin peaks has not been utilized. In this study a wheat doubled haploid population with a genetic linkage map of good coverage was used to assay individual gliadin peaks from MALDI-TOF profiles as molecular markers. Eight segregating peaks in the population were scored as polymorphic across the population. The 1 to 1 segregating ratios validated the scoring of the peaks and all peaks were mapped to the expected chromosomes or linkage groups on the available linkage map: 1 peak on chromosome 1A, 1 on 6A, 4 on 6B and 2 on 6D.

Abstract
The Monte Carlo code MCNPX has been used to determine mean absorbed doses to the embryo and foetus when the mother is exposed to neutron fields. There are situations, such as on-board aircraft, where high-energy neutrons are often peaked in top down (TOP) direction. In addition to previous publications for standard irradiation geometries, this study provides absorbed dose conversion coefficients for the embryo of 8 weeks and the foetus of 3, 6 or 9 months at TOP irradiation geometry. The conversion coefficients are compared with the coefficients in isotropic irradiation (ISO). With increasing neutron energies, the conversion coefficients in TOP irradiation become dominant. A set of conversion coefficients is constructed from the higher value in either ISO or TOP irradiation at a given neutron energy. In cases where the irradiation geometry is not adequately known, this set of conversion coefficients can be used in a conservative dose assessment for embryo and foetus in neutron fields.

Abstract
Management of drinking water safety is changing towards an integrated risk assessment and risk management approach that includes all processes in a water supply system from catchment to consumers. However, given the large number of water supply systems in China and the cost of implementing such a risk assessment procedure, there is a necessity to first conduct a strategic screening analysis at a national level. An integrated methodology of risk assessment and screening analysis is thus proposed to evaluate drinking water safety of a conventional water supply system. The violation probability, indicating drinking water safety, is estimated at different locations of a water supply system in terms of permanganate index, ammonia nitrogen, turbidity, residual chlorine and trihalomethanes. Critical parameters with respect to drinking water safety are then identified, based on which an index system is developed to prioritize conventional water supply systems in implementing a detailed risk assessment procedure. The evaluation results are represented as graphic check matrices for the concerned hazards in drinking water, from which the vulnerability of a conventional water supply system is characterized.

Abstract
We present measurements of the inclusive branching fractions for the decays D+-->Xe+ nu(e) and D0-->Xe+ nu(e), using 281 pb(-1) of data collected on the psi(3770) resonance with the CLEO-c detector. We find B(D0-->Xe+ nu(e)) = (6.46+/-0.17+/-0.13)% and B(D+-->Xe+ nu(e)) = (16.13+/-0.20+/-0.33)%. Using the known D meson lifetimes, we obtain the ratio Gamma(D+)sl/Gamma(D0)sl = 0.985+/-0.028+/-0.015, confirming isospin invariance at the level of 3%. The positron momentum spectra from D+ and D0 have consistent shapes.

Abstract
The number of older adults with HIV-1 disease is increasing but little is known about how age influences behavioral deficits associated with HIV-1 infection. The purpose of this study was to determine in a murine model if aging influenced sickness behavior following central injection of HIV-1 gp120. In initial studies, behavioral deficits induced by acute and repeated intracerebroventricular (ICV) injection of gp120 were greater in aged mice than in adults. Furthermore, repeated ICV injection of gp120 increased hippocampal levels of IL-1 beta and IL-6 mRNA in aged mice but not in adults. To determine if IL-6, which is elevated in aged brain, affects expression of the gp120-binding target, CCR5, microglia (BV-2 cell line) were incubated with increasing concentrations of IL-6. Cell surface expression of CCR5 was increased by IL-6 in a dose-dependent manner. Additionally, IL-6 increased gp120-dependent chemotaxis. These results suggest that aging increases the sensitivity of mice to behavioral deficits caused by ICV gp120, perhaps by increasing expression of CCR5 and augmenting production of cytokines.

Abstract
O(2)-sensing in the carotid body occurs in neuroectoderm-derived type I glomus cells where hypoxia elicits a complex chemotransduction cascade involving membrane depolarization, Ca(2+) entry and the release of excitatory neurotransmitters. Efforts to understand the exquisite O(2)-sensitivity of these cells currently focus on the coupling between local P(O2) and the open-closed state of K(+)-channels. Amongst multiple competing hypotheses is the notion that K(+)-channel activity is mediated by a phagocytic-like multisubunit enzyme, NADPH oxidase, which produces reactive oxygen species (ROS) in proportion to the prevailing P(O2). In O(2)-sensitive cells of lung neuroepithelial bodies (NEB), multiple studies confirm that ROS levels decrease in hypoxia, and that E(M) and K(+)-channel activity are indeed controlled by ROS produced by NADPH oxidase. However, recent studies in our laboratories suggest that ROS generated by a non-phagocyte isoform of the oxidase are important contributors to chemotransduction, but that their role in type I cells differs fundamentally from the mechanism utilized by NEB chemoreceptors. Data indicate that in response to hypoxia, NADPH oxidase activity is increased in type I cells, and further, that increased ROS levels generated in response to low-O(2) facilitate cell repolarization via specific subsets of K(+)-channels.

Abstract
Single nucleotide polymorphisms in type A gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA(A)) receptor beta2 subunit gene (GABRB2) were found to be associated with schizophrenia in Chinese, German, Japanese and Portuguese. To explore potential functional consequences of these DNA sequence polymorphisms, this study examined the expression and electrophysiological properties of two alternatively spliced products of GABRB2 along with genotypical disease association analysis. Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction, performed with a cohort of 31 schizophrenics and 31 controls of US population, showed 21.7% reduction in the expression of the long isoform beta(2L), 13.4% in the short isoform beta(2S) and 15.8% in the sum of the two isoforms beta(2T) in postmortem schizophrenic brain. Furthermore, two independent mRNA quantitation methods showed that the relative expression of the long over the short isoforms was significantly decreased, suggesting the occurrence of altered splicing, in schizophrenia. In male schizophrenics, the heterozygous genotypes of rs1876071 (T/C) and rs1876072 (A/G) were correlated with reduced expression of beta(2L), beta(2S) and beta(2T), and the heterozygous of rs2546620 (A/G) and homozygous-minor of rs1876071 (C/C) and rs1876072 (G/G) were correlated with reduced expression of beta(2T). Significant correlations of expression levels with different alleles and haplotypes were also indicated by quantitative trait analysis. Recombinant GABA(A) receptors expressed in HEK293 human cells containing beta(2L) underwent a steeper current rundown upon repetitive GABA activation than receptors containing beta(2S). The results thus revealed genotype-dependent expression of the alternatively spliced isoforms of GABA(A) receptor beta2 subunit, giving rise to electrophysiological consequences that could play an important role in the pathogenesis mechanism of schizophrenia.

Abstract
Nuclear receptor 2E1 (NR2E1) is expressed in human fetal and adult brains; however, its role in human brain–behavior development is unknown. Previously, we have corrected the cortical hypoplasia and behavioral abnormalities in Nr2e1−/− mice using a genomic clone spanning human NR2E1, which bolsters the hypothesis that NR2E1 may similarly play a role in human cortical and behavioral development. To test the hypothesis that humans with abnormal brain–behavior development may have null or hypomorphic NR2E1 mutations, we undertook the first candidate mutation screen of NR2E1 by sequencing its entire coding region, untranslated, splice site, proximal promoter and evolutionarily conserved non-coding regions in 56 unrelated patients with cortical disorders, namely microcephaly. We then genotyped the candidate mutations in 325 unrelated control subjects and 15 relatives. We did not detect any coding region changes in NR2E1; however, we identified seven novel candidate regulatory mutations that were absent from control subjects. We used in silico tools to predict the effects of these candidate mutations on neural transcription factor binding sites (TFBS). Four candidate mutations were predicted to alter TFBS. To facilitate the present and future studies of NR2E1, we also elucidated its molecular evolution, genetic diversity, haplotype structure and linkage disequilibrium by sequencing an additional 94 unaffected humans representing Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Oceania, as well as great apes and monkeys. We detected strong purifying selection, low genetic diversity, 21 novel polymorphisms and five common haplotypes at NR2E1. We conclude that protein-coding changes in NR2E1 do not contribute to cortical and behavioral abnormalities in the patients examined here, but that regulatory mutations may play a role.

Abstract
Painting a glass slide with branched or linear N,N-dodecyl methyl-polyethylenimines (PEIs) and certain other hydrophobic PEI derivatives enables it to kill influenza virus with essentially a 100% efficiency (at least a 4-log reduction in the viral titer) within minutes, as well as the airborne human pathogenic bacteria Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. For most of the coating polyions, this virucidal action is shown to be on contact, i.e., solely by the polymeric chains anchored to the slide surface; for others, a contribution of the polyion leaching from the painted surface cannot be ruled out. A relationship between the structure of the derivatized PEI and the resultant virucidal activity of the painted surface has been elucidated.

Abstract
Peptide-conjugated phosphorodiamidate morpholino oligomers (P-PMO) are single-stranded nucleic acid-like antisense agents that can reduce gene expression by sterically blocking complementary RNA sequence. P-PMO are water soluble and nuclease resistant, and they readily achieve uptake into cells in culture under standard conditions. Eight P-PMO, each 20 to 22 bases in length, were evaluated for their ability to inhibit influenza A virus (FLUAV) A/PR/8/34 (H1N1) replication in cell culture. The P-PMO were designed to base pair with FLUAV RNA sequences that are highly conserved across viral subtypes and considered critical to the FLUAV biological-cycle, such as gene segment termini and mRNA translation start site regions. Several P-PMO were highly efficacious, each reducing viral titer in a dose-responsive and sequence-specific manner in A/PR/8/34-infected cells. Two P-PMO, one designed to target the AUG translation start site region of PB1 mRNA and the other the 3'-terminal region of nucleoprotein viral genome RNA, also proved to be potent against several other FLUAV strains, including A/WSN/33 (H1N1), A/Memphis/8/88 (H3N2), A/Eq/Miami/63 (H3N8), A/Eq/Prague/56 (H7N7), and the highly pathogenic A/Thailand/1(KAN-1)/04 (H5N1). The P-PMO exhibited minimal cytotoxicity in cell viability assays. High efficacy by two of the P-PMO against multiple FLUAV subtypes suggests that these oligomers represent a broad-spectrum therapeutic approach against a high percentage of known FLUAV strains.
