Abstract
BACKGROUND Recently, a number of non-HLA (human leucocyte antigen) psoriasis genetic susceptibility loci have been identified through genome-wide association studies, but data on their association with psoriatic arthritis (PsA) are lacking. OBJECTIVES To investigate recently identified psoriasis susceptibility loci in a cohort of Chinese patients with PsA, psoriasis vulgaris (PsV) and healthy controls. METHODS Twenty single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from 20 loci were selected for genotyping in 379 patients with PsA, 595 patients with PsV and 1181 healthy controls using the MassARRAY platform (Sequenom, San Diego, CA, U.S.A.). Data handling, quality control and association were performed using PLINK software, v. 1.07. The Cochran-Armitage trend test was used to test the genotype-phenotype association. RESULTS PsA showed a significant association with markers at TNIP1 (rs17728338, P = 2.20 × 10(-8)), IL28RA (rs4649203, P = 5.04 × 10(-6)), IL12B (rs2082412, P = 3.82 × 10(-5)), ERAP1 (rs27524, P = 1.25 × 10(-3)), PTTG1 (rs2431697, P = 1.22 × 10(-3)) and GJB2 (rs3751385, P = 1.48 × 10(-3)) when compared with the control group. In PsV a significant association was found for IL28RA (rs4649203, P = 9.53 × 10(-7)), TNIP1 (rs17728338, P = 1.21 × 10(-4)) and ERAP1 (rs27524, P = 1.17 × 10(-3)). The allele frequencies were not statistically different between PsA and PsV except for SNPs at IL12B and ZNF816A with a nominal P-value of 0.04 and 0·01, respectively. CONCLUSIONS This study provides evidence for the involvement of ERAP1, IL28RA, GJB2 and PTTG1 loci in PsA susceptibility and confirmed the previously reported association with PsA and PsV. These results support the hypothesis that genetic aetiology of psoriasis is the same in both PsA and PsV and also support the higher genetic component of PsA than PsV.

Abstract
This prospective randomized controlled trial investigated whether antiviral therapy decreases the risk of perioperative viral reactivation in patients with hepatitis B virus-induced hepatocellular carcinoma. Patients with hepatitis B virus-related hepatocellular carcinoma undergoing liver resection were screened. Eighty-four patients with low viral load were randomly assigned to receive either antiviral treatment with telbivudine or no therapy. The primary outcome was reactivation of viral replication. Secondary outcomes included liver function recovery and postoperative liver insufficiency. A total of 15 patients developed HBV reactivation during the perioperative period, of which 8 (57.1%) were within the first week after hepatectomy. The incidence of viral reactivation during the perioperative period was 2.5% (1/40) in the antiviral-treated group, compared with 31.8% (14/44) in the control group [HR 0.07 (95%CI 0.01-0.65); P = 0.001]. Liver function recovery was achieved in 82.5% (33/40) patients in the antiviral group on day 30 after hepatectomy, compared with 91.0% (40/44) in the nonantiviral group [HR 1.23 (95%CI 0.98-2.55); P = 0.109]. A total of 7 patients (8.9%) had postoperative liver insufficiency in both groups, but there was no relevant difference between the two groups. Antiviral therapy with telbivudine can significantly decrease the perioperative reactivation of viral replication in patients with hepatitis B virus-related hepatocellular carcinoma undergoing liver resection. Antiviral therapy is an appropriate option for all patients with viral replication undergoing liver resection. (Chinese Clinical Trial Registry, number ChiCTR-TRC-0900615).

Abstract
Using spin-polarized low energy electron microscopy, we discovered a new type of domain wall structure in perpendicularly magnetized Fe/Ni bilayers grown epitaxially on Cu(100). Specifically, we observed unexpected Néel-type walls with fixed chirality in the magnetic stripe phase. Furthermore, we find that the chirality of the domain walls is determined by the film growth order with the chirality being right handed in Fe/Ni bilayers and left handed in Ni/Fe bilayers, suggesting that the underlying mechanism is the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction at the film interfaces. Our observations may open a new route to control chiral spin structures using interfacial engineering in transition metal heterostructures.

Abstract
The developmental kinetics of pig embryos produced by parthenogenetic activation without (PAZF) or with (PAZI) zona pellucida or by handmade cloning (HMC) was compared by time-lapse videography. After cumulus cell removal, the matured oocytes were either left zona intact (PAZI) or were made zona free by pronase digestion (PAZF) before they were activated (PA). Other matured oocytes were used for HMC based on foetal fibroblast cells. On Day 0 (day of PA or reconstruction), the embryos were cultured for 7 days in vitro in our time-lapse system. Pictures were taken every 30 min, and afterwards, each cell cycle was identified for each embryo to be analysed. Results showed that the PA embryos (both PAZF and PAZI) had shorter first cell cycle compared with HMC (17.4. 17.8 vs 23.6 h), but had a longer time length from four cell to morula stages (57.9, 53.8 vs 44.9 h). However, at the second cell cycle, PAZF embryos needed shorter time, while PAZI embryos had similar time length as HMC embryos, and both were longer than PAZF (23.4, 24.8 vs 14.6 h). Both PAZF and PAZI embryos used similar time to reach the blastocyst stage, and this was later than HMC embryos. In addition, when all of these embryos were grouped into viable (developed to blastocysts) and non-viable (not developed to blastocysts), the only difference in the time length was observed on the first cell cycle (18.6 vs 24.5 h), but not on the later cell cycles. In conclusion, our results not only give detailed information regarding the time schedule of in vitro-handled pig embryos, but also indicate that the first cell cycle could be used as a selecting marker for embryo viability. However, to evaluate the effect of the produced techniques, the whole time schedule of the pre-implantation developmental kinetics should be observed.

Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to study the effect of smilagenin (SMI) (PYM50028), a sapogenin compound originally identified from Chinese medicinal herb, on dopamine neurons and locomotor ability in aged rats. Experiments were carried out on young and aged Sprague-Dawley rats, which were daily administered with either SMI (18mg/kg/day) or vehicle (0.5% sodium carboxymethycellulose [CMCNa]). Open-field and rotarod performance tests revealed that behavioral ability was impaired in aged rats and was improved by oral administration of smilagenin. Immunohistochemical data showed that tyrosine hydroxylase (TH)-positive neuron numbers in the substantia nigra pars compacta (unbiased stereological counting) were altered with aging and were increased by smilagenin treatment. Likewise, the dopamine receptor density and the striatal dopamine transporter (DAT) density ((125)I-2β-carbomethoxy-3β-(4-iodophenyl)-N-(3-fluoropropyl) nortropane [(125)I-FP-CIT] autoradiography) were significantly lowered in aged rats as compared to young rats, and treatment with smilagenin significantly elevated the dopamine receptor and DAT density in aged rats. Furthermore, smilagenin enhances glial cell-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) release both in the striatum and midbrain. These results indicate a possible role of smilagenin in the treatment of age-related extrapyramidal disorders.

Abstract
The recently identified human infections with avian influenza A(H7N9) viruses in China raise important questions regarding possible source and risk to humans. Sequence comparison with an influenza A(H7N7) outbreak in the Netherlands in 2003 and an A(H7N1) epidemic in Italy in 1999–2000 suggests that widespread circulation of A(H7N9) viruses must have occurred in China. The emergence of human adaptation marker PB2 E627K in human A(H7N9) cases parallels that of the fatal A(H7N7) human case in the Netherlands.

Abstract
Fractures of the coronoid process are uncommon and can easily be missed. The purpose of this study was to classify the fracture patterns and explore the treatment options. This retrospective study included 39 patients with fractures of the mandibular coronoid process. Treatment protocols were developed based on the time of fracture, degree of mouth opening, location of the coronoid fracture, types of fracture, and other concomitant fractures. All patients were followed up for 12-60 months. Sixteen patients underwent conservative management and four of these patients developed progressive trismus, which improved significantly after removal of the coronoid process. Twenty-three patients underwent open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) via the modified retromandibular approach. Follow-up data showed significant improvement in maximum mouth opening and symptoms (diet and pain) compared to their preoperative status. In summary, conservative management is first recommended for fractures of the coronoid process with minimal displacement or restriction of mouth opening. For patients with significant fracture displacement and limited mouth opening, or with concomitant fractures of the zygoma, zygomatic arch, or mandibular ramus, ORIF via the modified retromandibular approach through the anterior border of the parotid gland is an alternative treatment method.

Abstract
AIM Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are commonly used to manage the pain and inflammation. NSAIDs can cause serious side effects, including vision problems. However, the underlying mechanisms are still unclear. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the effect of meclofenamic acid (MFA) on retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). MATERIALS AND METHODS In our study, we applied image analysis and whole-cell patch clamp recording to directly measure the effect of MFA on the gap junctional coupling between RPE cells. RESULTS Analysis of Lucifer yellow (LY) transfer revealed that the gap junction communication existed between RPE cells. Functional experiments using the whole-cell configuration of the patch clamp technique showed that a gap junction conductance also existed between this kind of cells. Importantly, MFA largely inhibited the gap junction conductance and induced the uncoupling of RPE cells. Other NSAIDs, like aspirin and flufenamic acid (FFA), had the same effect. CONCLUSION The gap junction functionally existed in RPE cells, which can be blocked by MFA. These findings may explain, at least partially, the vision problems with certain clinically used NSAIDs.

Abstract
An electrocatalytic membrane reactor assembled using a nano-MnO2 loading microporous Ti membrane as an anode and a tubular stainless steel as a cathode was used to oxidize n-propanol to produce propionic acid. The high efficiency and selectivity obtained is related to the synergistic effect between the reaction and separation in the reactor.

Abstract
In this study, solid-state mechanochemical milling was investigated as a viable strategy to produce high performance blends composed of polypropylene (PP) and ground tire rubber (GTR), thereby providing a potentially new route to recycle discarded tires. The improved dispersion of the blends after mechanochemical milling was confirmed by fluorescence microscopy and polarized optical microscopy (POM) observation. After 20 cycles of milling, the tensile strength of PP/GTR (100/40) blends was enhanced by 13.8%, and the elongation at break was over 12 times than that of the unpretreated blend. The formation of smaller and less ordered spherulites of PP after mechanochemical milling as confirmed by POM observation and wide-angle X-ray diffraction analysis might be the reason for the significant enhancement of the elongation at break.
