Abstract
The mosquito, Aedes baisasi, which inhabits brackish mangrove swamps, is known to feed on fish. However, its host assemblage has not been investigated at the species level. We amplified and sequenced the cytochrome oxidase subunit I barcoding regions as well as some other regions from blood-fed females to identify host assemblages in the natural populations from four islands in the Ryukyu Archipelago. Hosts were identified from 230 females. We identified 15 host fish species belonging to eight families and four orders. Contrary to expectations from previous observations, mudskippers were detected from only 3% of blood-engorged females. The dominant host was a four-eyed sleeper, Bostrychus sinensis (Butidae, Gobiiformes), in Iriomote-jima Island (61%), while it was a snake eel, Pisodonophis boro (Ophichthidae, Anguilliformes), in Amami-oshima and Okinawa-jima islands (78% and 79%, respectively). Most of the identified hosts were known as air-breathing or amphibious fishes that inhabit mangroves or lagoons. Our results suggest that A. baisasi females locate the bloodmeal hosts within the mangrove forests and sometimes in the adjacent lagoons and land on the surface of available amphibious or other air-breathing fishes exposed in the air to feed on their blood.

Abstract
Introduction New treatments to inhibit neointimal formation after percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) are needed for patients undergoing chronic hemodialysis (HD). We compared the efficacy and safety of AMG0102, a balloon catheter containing nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) decoy oligodeoxynucleotide (ODN) with the PTA balloon catheter (control group) for arteriovenous fistula (AVF) stenosis. Methods In total, 175 patients (age ≥20 years, undergoing HD, with venous stenosis at the anastomotic region) were registered in this prospective open-label, randomized study. Patients were followed postoperatively for 36 weeks. The duration of primary patency on the targeted venous stenosis site (primary endpoint) was estimated by the Kaplan–Meier method. Results A lower restenosis risk was observed for the AMG0102 group, but it was not statistically significant (stratified log-rank test P = 0.250, hazard ratio [HR] 0.774; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.500–1.198). The median duration of primary patency was 245 days and 172 days in the AMG0102 and control groups, respectively. After stratification based on the status of diabetes complications, the HR was 0.666 (95% CI: 0.366–1.212; P = 0.183) and the median duration of primary patency was prolonged by 108 days in the AMG0102 group with diabetes complications (245 days) compared with the control group (137 days). Adverse event (AE) incidence up to 36 postoperative weeks did not differ between groups. Four device failures occurred in 3 patients (AMG0102 group), but none resulted in AEs. Conclusion Further modifications to enhance NF-κB decoy ODN uptake and efficacy are necessary to show its clinical utility for AVF stenosis in chronic HD.

Abstract
In many flowering plants, floral scents are a significant trait for visitors, playing an important role in attracting pollinators and/or detracting herbivores. The evolution of flowering plants from hermaphroditism to dioecy is often accompanied by sexual dimorphism in floral scent. In this study, floral scents emitted by different sexual morphs of the subdioecious shrub Eurya japonica Thunb. were collected using a dynamic headspace method, and sexual and temporal variations were evaluated by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Two volatiles, α-pinene and linalool, were identified as the major components of floral scents in females, hermaphrodites, and males. The males emit higher amounts of floral scents, particularly α-pinene, compared to females or hermaphrodites. Floral scents emitted by males generally decrease as flowers enter senescence, whereas those from females or hermaphrodites do not significantly differ. Intraspecific variations in floral scents of subdioecious species provided by this study would contribute to better understanding of sexual dimorphism in floral scent.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
In the eighth edition of the AJCC cancer staging classification, the T system for distal cholangiocarcinoma (DCC) has been revised from a layer-based to a depth-based approach. The aim of this study was to propose an optimal T classification using a measured depth in resectable DCC.
Methods
Patients who underwent pancreatoduodenectomy for DCC at 32 hospitals between 2001 and 2010 were included. The distance between the level of the naive bile duct and the deepest cancer cells was measured as depth of invasion (DOI). Invasive cancer foci were measured as invasive tumour thickness (ITT). Log rank χ2 scores were used to determine the cut-off points, and concordance index (C-index) to assess the survival discrimination of each T system.
Results
Among 404 patients, DOI was measurable in 182 (45·0 per cent) and ITT was measurable in all patients, with median values of 2·3 and 5·6 mm respectively. ITT showed a positive correlation with DOI (rs = 0·854, P < 0·001), and the cut-off points for prognosis were 1, 5 and 10 mm. Median survival time was shorter with increased ITT: 12·4 years for ITT below 1 mm, 5·2 years for ITT at least 1 mm but less than 5 mm, 3·0 years for ITT at least 5 mm but less than 10 mm, and 1·5 years for ITT 10 mm or more (P < 0·001). This classification exhibited more favourable prognostic discrimination than the T systems of the seventh and eighth editions of the AJCC (C-index 0·646, 0·622 and 0·624 respectively).
Conclusion
ITT is an accurate approach for depth assessment in DCC. The four-tier ITT classification with cut-off points of 1, 5 and 10 mm seems to be a better T system than those in the seventh and eighth editions of the AJCC classification.

Abstract
Transactivation of inflammatory and immune mediators in asthma is tightly regulated by nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) and signal transducer and activator of transcription 6 (STAT6). Therefore, we investigated the efficacy of simultaneous inhibition of NF-κB and STAT6 using a chimeric decoy strategy to prevent asthma exacerbation. The effects of decoy oligodeoxynucleotides were evaluated using an ovalbumin-induced mouse asthma model. Ovalbumin-sensitized mice received intratracheal administration of decoy oligodeoxynucleotides 3 days before ovalbumin challenge. Fluorescent-dye-labeled decoy oligodeoxynucleotides could be detected in lymphocytes and macrophages in the lung, and activation of NF-κB and STAT6 was inhibited by chimeric decoy oligodeoxynucleotide transfer. Consequently, treatment with chimeric or NF-κB decoy oligodeoxynucleotides protected against methacholine-induced airway hyperresponsiveness, whereas the effect of chimeric decoy oligodeoxynucleotides was significantly greater than that of NF-κB decoy oligodeoxynucleotides. Treatment with chimeric decoy oligodeoxynucleotides suppressed airway inflammation through inhibition of overexpression of interleukin-4 (IL-4), IL-5, and IL-13 and inflammatory infiltrates. Histamine levels in the lung were reduced via suppression of mast cell accumulation. A significant reduction in mucin secretion was observed due to suppression of MUC5AC gene expression. Interestingly, the inhibitory effects on IL-5, IL-13, and histamine secretion were achieved by transfer of chimeric decoy oligodeoxynucleotides only. This novel therapeutic approach could be useful to treat patients with various types of asthma.

Abstract
We propose a novel representation of materials named an 'orbital-field matrix (OFM)', which is based on the distribution of valence shell electrons. We demonstrate that this new representation can be highly useful in mining material data. Experimental investigation shows that the formation energies of crystalline materials, atomization energies of molecular materials, and local magnetic moments of the constituent atoms in bimetal alloys of lanthanide metal and transition-metal can be predicted with high accuracy using the OFM. Knowledge regarding the role of the coordination numbers of the transition-metal and lanthanide elements in determining the local magnetic moments of the transition-metal sites can be acquired directly from decision tree regression analyses using the OFM.

Abstract
A band gap for electronic states in crystals governs various properties of solids, such as transport, optical, and magnetic properties. Its estimation and control have been an important issue in solid-state physics. The band gap can be controlled externally by various parameters, such as pressure, atomic compositions, and external field. Sometimes, the gap even collapses by tuning some parameter. In the field of topological insulators, this closing of the gap at a time-reversal invariant momentum indicates a band inversion, that is, it leads to a topological phase transition from a normal insulator to a topological insulator. We show, through an exhaustive study on possible space groups, that the gap closing in inversion-asymmetric crystals is universal, in the sense that the gap closing always leads either to a Weyl semimetal or to a nodal-line semimetal. We consider three-dimensional spinful systems with time-reversal symmetry. The space group of the system and the wave vector at the gap closing uniquely determine which possibility occurs and where the gap-closing points or lines lie in the wave vector space after the closing of the gap. In particular, we show that an insulator-to-insulator transition never happens, which is in sharp contrast to inversion-symmetric systems.

Abstract
We report the case of a 71-year-old Japanese man with squamous cell carcinoma arising from lupus vulgaris on the face, >60 years after the appearance of the lupus vulgaris. The red plaque on the patient's face had been diagnosed as a hemangioma or rosacea at several hospitals, although he had had lung tuberculosis at the age of 4 and his father died from lung tuberculosis at 38 years of age. Although lupus vulgaris was the most frequent clinical form of true skin tuberculosis until the 1960s, it has become rare since then. Malignant tumors are known to occur in individuals with lupus vulgaris, with a reported rate of 0.5-10.5%. In light of Japan's "graying society," tuberculosis is still an important disorder, and clinicians must remain aware of cutaneous tuberculosis.

Abstract
We demonstrate that knowledge of chemical physics on a materials system can be automatically extracted from first-principles calculations using a data mining technique; this information can then be utilized to construct a simple empirical atomic potential model. By using unsupervised learning of the generative Gaussian mixture model, physically meaningful patterns of atomic local chemical environments can be detected automatically. Based on the obtained information regarding these atomic patterns, we propose a chemical-structure-dependent linear mixture model for estimating the atomic potential energy. Our experiments show that the proposed mixture model significantly improves the accuracy of the prediction of the potential energy surface for complex systems that possess a large diversity in their local structures.

Abstract
Abstract
Background: The aim of this prospective study is to evaluate feasibility of the periareolar injection of contrast agent (Sonazoid (SNZ)) followed by ultrasonography (US) for identification of sentinel lymph node (SLN) in breast cancer patients with clinically negative node.
Patients and Methods: Patients with T1-2N0M0 breast cancer were recruited in this study. They received the periareolar injection of SNZ followed by US to identify contrast-enhanced SLN. Fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) was done for each CE-SLN. Then, they underwent SLN biopsy with the conventional method, blue dye and/or radiotracer (B/R).
Results: In almost all cases, contrast-enhanced lymphatic vessels were clearly visualized US soon after the periareolar injection of SNZ, and SLN, into which lymphatic flow was draining, was easily identified. The identification rate of SLN was 98% (98/100) by SNZ and 100% (100/100) by B/R. The number of SLNs identified by SNZ (mean per patient, 1.52) was significantly (P < 0.001) lower than that of those by B/R (2.22). Twenty-five patients had at least one metastasis in the SLNs identified by SNZ and/or B/R. In these patients, SLNs (n=39) identified by both SNZ and B/R showed a significantly (P < 0.0001) higher positivity (74.4%) for metastases than those (n=19) identified by B/R alone (21.1%).
Conclusion: Identification of SLN by periareolar injection of SNZ followed by US is a technically easy method and the identification rate of SLN was as high as 98%, being comparable to the conventional B/R. SLNs detected by SNZ seem to represent the true SLNs which first receive lymphatic flow from the tumor among the SLNs detected by B/R.

Abstract
In nodal-line semimetals, the gaps close along loops in k space, which are not at high-symmetry points. Typical mechanisms for the emergence of nodal lines involve mirror symmetry and the π Berry phase. Here we show via ab initio calculations that fcc calcium (Ca), strontium (Sr) and ytterbium (Yb) have topological nodal lines with the π Berry phase near the Fermi level, when spin-orbit interaction is neglected. In particular, Ca becomes a nodal-line semimetal at high pressure. Owing to nodal lines, the Zak phase becomes either π or 0, depending on the wavevector k, and the π Zak phase leads to surface polarization charge. Carriers eventually screen it, leaving behind large surface dipoles. In materials with nodal lines, both the large surface polarization charge and the emergent drumhead surface states enhance Rashba splitting when heavy adatoms are present, as we have shown to occur in Bi/Sr(111) and in Bi/Ag(111).

Abstract
Only limited epidemiological evidence exists regarding the relationship between diabetic neuropathy and erectile dysfunction (ED) among Japanese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. To investigate the relationship between diabetic neuropathy and ED among Japanese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, a multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted in 287 male Japanese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, age (19-65 years). Diabetic neuropathy was diagnosed if the patients showed two or more of the following three characteristics: neuropathic symptoms, decreased or disappeared Achilles tendon reflex and/or abnormal vibration perception. ED, moderate to severe ED, and severe ED were defined as present when a subject had a Sexual Health Inventory for Men score <22, <12 and <8, respectively. The prevalence values of diabetic neuropathy and severe ED were 47.0 and 39.0%, respectively. Diabetic neuropathy was independently positively associated with severe ED, but not ED and moderate ED: the adjusted odds ratio was 1.90 (95% confidence interval: 1.08-3.38). No relationships were found between diabetic retinopathy or diabetic nephropathy and ED. Diabetic neuropathy is positively associated with severe erectile dysfunction among Japanese type 2 diabetes mellitus patients aged <65 years.

Abstract
Collagen was identified as a fish allergen in early 2000s. Although its allergenic potential has been suggested to be low, risks associated with collagen as a fish allergen have not been evaluated to a greater extent. In this study, we aimed to clarify the importance of collagen as a fish allergen. Our results showed that 50% of Japanese patients with fish allergy had immunoglobulin E (IgE) against mackerel collagen, whereas 44% had IgE against mackerel parvalbumin. IgE inhibition assay revealed high cross-reactivity of mackerel collagen to 22 fish species (inhibition rates: 87-98%). Furthermore, a recently developed allergy test demonstrated that collagen triggered IgE cross-linking on mast cells. These data indicate that fish collagen is an important and very common panallergen in fish consumed in Japan. The high rate of individuals' collagen allergy may be attributable to the traditional Japanese custom of raw fish consumption.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS This study investigated the effect of perioperative synbiotics on bacterial translocation to mesenteric lymph nodes (MLNs) and occurrence of infectious complications following pancreatoduodenectomy (PD; University Hospital Medical Information Network ID 000003705). METHODS Patients who were scheduled to undergo PD were randomized to receive preoperative synbiotics or no synbiotics (control group). MLNs were harvested at laparotomy (MLN-1) and after the resection (MLN-2). Blood samples were collected before laparotomy (Blood-1) and on postoperative day 1 (Blood-2). Microorganisms in each sample were detected using a bacterium-specific ribosomal RNA-targeted reverse transcriptase-quantitative polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS Forty-four patients were included. In all samples, the bacterial detection rate in the MLN-1, MLN-2, Blood-1, and Blood-2 was lower in the synbiotics group than in the control group, although it did not reach a statistically significant difference. There was a significant correlation between the positivity of bacteria in the MLN-2 and Blood-2 samples (p = 0.009). The incidence rate of overall infectious complications was not significantly different between the 2 groups. Among various perioperative factors, the incidence of pancreatic fistula was the only factor that had a significant association with the incidence of infectious complications. CONCLUSION The preoperative use of synbiotics did not affect the incidence of infectious complications following PD.

Abstract
AIM Although neck circumference (NC) is thought to predict obesity-related metabolic abnormality, its causal role in cardiometabolic risk is unclear. The aim of this study was to clarify the impact of changes in NC on cardiometabolic risk in healthy postmenopausal women through a community-based longitudinal study. METHODS From a local community in Japan, 63 generally healthy postmenopausal women were recruited. All participants received an assessment of obesity-related anthropometric markers, biochemical parameters, and hemodynamic measures and were followed on average for 3 years. RESULTS At baseline analysis, larger NC was positively associated with atherosclerosis-related markers, brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) and blood pressure, as well as some lipid parameters. After the follow-up period, change in NC was associated with changes in body mass index (BMI), body fat percentage, and waist circumference (WC). Interestingly, significant correlations of change in NC with changes in baPWV and blood pressure were observed, whereas changes in WC and BMI were only associated with changes in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and/or total cholesterol. In multivariate linear regression analysis, change in NC was significantly associated with changes in baPWV and systolic blood pressure, independent of changes in BMI, WC, and biochemical parameters. In addition, an increase in NC was associated with a 2.69-fold increased odds ratio of accelerated baPWV. CONCLUSIONS Change in NC was independently associated with changes in atherosclerosis-related markers. These observations suggest that NC is an important predictor of the risk of developing obesity-related atherosclerosis in healthy postmenopausal women.
