Abstract
Objective: To investigate the effects of hypoxia on the phenotype transformation of human dermal fibroblasts to myofibroblasts and the mechanism. Methods: The third passage of healthy adult human dermal fibroblasts in logarithmic phase were cultured in DMEM medium containing 10% fetal bovine serum for the following five experiments. (1) In experiments 1, 2, and 3, cells were divided into normoxia group and hypoxia group according to the random number table, with 10 dishes in each group. Cells of normoxia group were cultured in incubator containing 21% oxygen, while those of hypoxia group with 1% oxygen. At post culture hour (PCH) 0 and 48, 5 dishes of cells were collected from each group, respectively. mRNA expressions of markers of myofibroblasts including alpha smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), type Ⅰ collagen, and type Ⅲ collagen of cells were determined with real time fluorescent quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction in experiment 1. Protein expressions of α-SMA, type Ⅰ collagen, and type Ⅲ collagen of cells were determined with Western blotting in experiment 2. The protein expression of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) of cells was determined with Western blotting in experiment 3. (2) In experiment 4, cells were divided into normoxia group, hypoxia group, and hypoxia+ pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (PDTC) group according to the random number table, with 5 dishes in each group. Cells in the former two groups were treated the same as those in experiment 1. Cells in hypoxia+ PDTC group were treated the same as those in hypoxia group plus adding 4 mL PDTC with a final molarity of 10 μmol/L in the culture medium. At PCH 48, the protein expression of NF-κB of cells was determined with Western blotting. (3) In experiment 5, cells were divided into normoxia group, hypoxia group, hypoxia+ PDTC group, and normoxia+ PDTC group according to the random number table, with 5 dishes in each group. Cells in the former three groups were treated the same as those in experiment 4. Cells in normoxia+ PDTC group were treated the same as those in normoxia group plus adding 4 mL PDTC with a final molarity of 10 μmol/L in the culture medium. At PCH 48, protein expressions of α-SMA, type Ⅰ collagen, and type Ⅲ collagen of cells were determined with Western blotting. Data were processed with analysis of variance of factorial design, one-way analysis of variance, and LSD-t test. Results: (1) Compared with those of normoxia group at corresponding time point, mRNA expressions and protein expressions of α-SMA, type Ⅰ collagen, and type Ⅲ collagen and the protein expression of NF-κB in fibroblasts of hypoxia group were not changed obviously at PCH 0 (with t values from -1.21 to 2.04, P values above 0.05), while mRNA expressions and protein expressions of α-SMA, type Ⅰ collagen, and type Ⅲ collagen and the protein expression of NF-κB significantly increased at PCH 48 (with t values from -12.57 to -3.44, P values below 0.01). (2) At PCH 48, the protein expression of NF-κB in fibroblasts of hypoxia group was 0.83±0.12, significantly higher than that of normoxia group (0.17±0.06, t=-16.96, P<0.001). The protein expression of NF-κB in fibroblasts of hypoxia+ PDTC group was 0.31±0.08, significantly lower than that of hypoxia group (t=12.73, P<0.001). (3) At PCH 48, protein expressions of α-SMA, type Ⅰ collagen, and type Ⅲ collagen in fibroblasts of hypoxia group were 0.73±0.09, 1.25±0.10, and 1.16±0.07, respectively, significantly higher than those of normoxia group (0.14±0.06, 0.87±0.08, and 0.77±0.13, respectively, with t values from 9.24 to 11.24, P values below 0.001). The protein expression of α-SMA in fibroblasts of normoxia+ PDTC group was 0.24±0.07, significantly higher than that of normoxia group (t=4.22, P<0.01). Protein expressions of type Ⅰ collagen and type Ⅲ collagen in fibroblasts of normoxia+ PDTC group were 0.25±0.06 and 0.32±0.11, respectively, significantly lower than those of normoxia group (with t values respectively -4.31 and -3.88, P values below 0.01). Protein expressions of α-SMA, type Ⅰ collagen, and type Ⅲ collagen in fibroblasts of hypoxia+ PDTC group were 0.09±0.08, 0.38±0.12, and 0.47±0.08, respectively, significantly lower than those of hypoxia group (with t values from 11.78 to 22.98, P values below 0.001). Conclusions: Hypoxia can significantly up-regulate the expressions of α-SMA, type Ⅰ collagen, and type Ⅲ collagen in human dermal fibroblasts, which may promote the phenotype transformation of fibroblasts to myofibroblasts, and this is likely to be associated with the activation of NF-κB signal pathway.

Abstract
The prevention of chemotherapy‐induced nausea and vomiting was one of the most challenging supportive care issues in oncology, especially to highly emetogenic chemotherapy (HEC). A total of 645 patients were randomized into fosaprepitant group (fosaprepitant/placebo 150 mg d1 in combination with granisetron and dexamethasone) or aprepitant group (aprepitant/placebo 125 mg d1; 80 mg d2‐d3 plus granisetron and dexamethasone). The primary endpoint was the percentage of patients who had a complete response (CR) over the entire treatment course (0–120 hr, overall phase [OP]). It was assessed by using a non‐inferiority model, with a non‐inferiority margin of 10%. The difference of the CR rate was compared between two groups with chi‐square analysis. Six hundred and twenty‐six patients were included in the per protocol analysis. The percentage of patients with a CR in the fosaprepitant group was not inferior to that in the aprepitant group (90.85% versus 94.17%, p = .1302) during OP. Whether the cisplatin‐based chemotherapy or not, the CR rate of the fosaprepitant group was not inferior to that of the aprepitant group. Both regimens were well tolerated. The most common adverse event was constipation. Fosaprepitant provided effective and well‐tolerated control of nausea and vomiting associated with HEC in Chinese patients.

Abstract
Coherent light-matter interaction in ultrathin metamaterials has been demonstrated to dynamically modulate intensity, polarization and propagation direction of light. The gradient metasurface with a transverse phase variation usually exhibits an anomalous refracted beam of light dictated by so-called generalized Snell’s law. However, less attention has been paid to coherent control of the metasurface with multiple anomalous refracted beams. Here we propose an ultrathin gradient metasurface with single trapezoid-shaped slot antenna as its building block that allows one normal and two deflected transmitted beams. It is numerically demonstrated that such metasurface with multiple scattering modes can be coherently controlled to modulate output intensities by changing the relative phase difference between two counterpropagating coherent beams. Each mode can be coherently switched on/off and two deflected anomalous beams can be synchronously dictated by the phase difference. The coherent control effect in the trapezoid-shaped slit metasurface will offer a promising opportunity for multichannel signals modulation, multichannel sensing and wave front shaping.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To observe the association between the cardiovascular health score and new-onset atrial fibrillation. METHODS A total of 95 026 participants who participated the health examination between July 2006 and October 2007 at Kailuan group and without history of atrial fibrillation were selected as the observation cohort. The second, the third and the fourth health examination were performed between July 2008 to October 2009, July 2010 to October 2011, July 2012 to October 2013, respectively.A total of 85 028 participants were included in the final analysis after excluding participants who had new-onset valvular atrial fibrillation and participants lost to follow-up. The participants were divided into 4 subgroups by cardiovascular health score at baseline according to the definition of AHA and cardiovascular health scoring system, namely group of 0-6 points (n=11 103), 7-8 points (n=24 487), 9-10 points (n=32 556), and 11-14 points (n=16 882). The incidence of atrial fibrillation in each subgroup was observed, and the association between cardiovascular health score and risk of new-onset atrial fibrillation was analyzed using multiple Cox regression analysis. RESULTS A total of 254 participants developed atrial fibrillation during the median of (5.6±1.4) years follow-up. The total incidence of new-onset atrial fibrillation was 0.53/1 000 person-year. The incidence of atrial fibrillation was 0.69/1 000 person-year, 0.60/1 000 person-year, 0.56/1 000 person-year, and 0.30/1 000 person-year, respectively in 0-6 points, 7-8 points, 9-10 points, and 11-14 points subgroups, respectively(P<0.01). After adjustment of age, gender, education level, income, drink, history of myocardial infarction, history of stroke, serum uric acid and C reactive protein level, multiple Cox regression analysis showed that one health score point increase was related to 8% reduction of new onset atrial fibrillation(HR=0.92, 95%CI 0.86-0.99, P<0.05). Compared with the group of 0-6 points group, the risk of atrial fibrillation in the group of 11-14 points group was reduced by 49% (HR=0.51, 95%CI 0.31-0.83, P<0.01). CONCLUSION The risk of new-onset atrial fibrillation is reduced in proportion to increase of cardiovascular health score. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze the preventive effect of mecobalamin combined with glutathione on neurotoxicity induced by FOLFOX4 chemotherapy. METHODS Ninety-four patients receiving FOLFOX4 chemotherapy between January 2012 and December 2013 were randomized into experimental group and control group. Patients in the experimental group were given mecobalamin tablets and glutathione injection during chemotherapy while the patients in control group received glutathione injection only. The status of neurotoxicity was evaluated by the Levi neurotoxicity criteria 1992. RESULTS After six cycles of chemotherapy, the incidence of grade Ⅰ-Ⅱ neurotoxicity in the experimental and control groups were 34.7% (17/49) and 55.6%(25/45), respectively (P=0.042), the incidence of grade Ⅲ neurotoxicity in the experimental and control groups were 2.0%(1/49) and 13.3%(6/45), the difference is also statistically significant (P=0.037). After nine cycles of chemotherapy, significantly less grade Ⅰ-Ⅱ neurotoxicity was observed in the experimental group (44.6%) than that in the control group(70.3%, P=0.019). Incidence of grade Ⅲ neurotoxicity in the experimental group was significantly lower(4.26%) than that in the control group(18.9%, P=0.031). CONCLUSION Mecobalamin combined with glutathione can significantly reduce the incidence and severity of neurotoxicity induced by FOLFOX4 chemotherapy, therefore, worthy of clinical application.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate treatment effects of levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) for adenomyosis with menorrhea in a prospective study. METHODS From December 2006 to December 2014, patients of symptomatic adenomyosis diagnosed by transvaginal ultrasound in outpatient or inpatient clinics of Peking Union Medical College Hospital were given the treatment of LNG-IUS. Before and after placement of LNG-IUS, all the patients' parameters were recorded prospectively, including scores of menstruation blood loss, carrying status of IUS, symptoms and scores of dysmenorrhea, biochemical indicators, physical parameters, menstruation patterns and adverse effects. Changes of pictorial chart scores of menstruation and distribution of anemia during follow-up were analyzed. RESULTS Totally 1 100 women meets inclusion criteria, among which 618 cases (56.18%, 618/1 100) had severe menorrhea, with median follow-up period of 28 months (range 1- 60 months), and accumulative carrying rate of 66% at 60 months follow-up. After placement of LNG-IUS, compared with baselines, pictorial chart scores and ratio of menorrhea had decreased significantly (all P<0.01), the scroes of menstruation were 157±34, 94±35, 70±33, 67±18, 67±20, 65±19, 66±19, 65±21 at 0, 3, 6, 12, 24, 36, 48 and 60 months respectively. During 24 months after placement of LNG-IUS, pictorial chart scores and distribution of anemia had improved significantly compared with preceding period (all P<0.01). We found no dependent factors predicting improvement of pictorial chart scores of menorrhea, which was neither relevant with simultaneous changes of menstruation patterns nor adverse effects (all P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS LNG-IUS is effective for adenomyosis of menorrhea. Improvement of menstruation blood loss is independent on patients characters, menstruation patterns or adverse effects.

Abstract
Polarization manipulations of electromagnetic waves can be obtained by chiral and anisotropic metamaterials routinely, but the dynamic and high-efficiency modulations of chiral properties still remain challenging at the terahertz range. Here, we theoretically demonstrate a new scheme for realizing thermal-controlled chirality using a hybrid terahertz metamaterial with embedded vanadium dioxide (VO2) films. The phase transition of VO2 films in 90° twisted E-shaped resonators enables high-efficiency thermal modulation of linear polarization conversion. The asymmetric transmission of linearly polarized wave and circular dichroism simultaneously exhibit a pronounced switching effect dictated by temperature-controlled conductivity of VO2 inclusions. The proposed hybrid metamaterial design opens exciting possibilities to achieve dynamic modulation of terahertz waves and further develop tunable terahertz polarization devices.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To observe the impact of combined systolic blood pressure and body mass index (BMI) on the risk of new-onset atrial fibrillation. METHODS The participants who participated the health examination between July 2006 and October 2007 at Kailuan medical group and had no history of atrial fibrillation were selected as the observation cohort. The second, the third and the fourth health examination were conducted between July 2008 and October 2009, July 2010 and October 2011, July 2012 and October 2013, respectively. The participants were stratified by 3 systolic blood pressure levels (≤120, 120-140, ≥140 mmHg (1 mmHg=0.133 kPa))×3 BMI levels (≤24, 24-28, ≥28 kg/m(2)) at baseline. The combined effect of systolic blood pressure and BMI on the risk of new-onset atrial fibrillation was analyzed by multiple Cox regression analysis. RESULTS A total of 99 206 participants were recruited and 88 715 participants were included in the final analysis after excluding participants who had new-onset valvular atrial fibrillation or lost to follow-up.A total of 265 participants developed atrial fibrillation during the 5.6 years follow-up.The incidence of atrial fibrillation increased with the BMI and systolic blood pressure, the incidence of new onset of atrial fibrillation was significantly higher in the group with systolic blood pressure≥140 mmHg and BMI≥28 kg/m(2) than the group with systolic blood pressure≤120 mmHg and BMI≤24 kg/m(2)(1.15/1 000 person-year vs. 0.25/1 000 person-year). Multiple Cox regression analysis showed that participants in the group with systolic blood pressure≥140 mmHg and BMI≥28 kg/m(2) carried 2.08 (95%CI 1.18-3.67) times higher risk for atrial fibrillation than the group with systolic blood pressure≤120 mmHg and BMI≤24 kg/m(2) after adjustment for age, gender and other confounders at baseline. CONCLUSION Participants with systolic blood pressure≥140 mmHg and BMI≥28 kg/m(2) are at high risk for new onset of atrial fibrillation.

Abstract
The aims of this study were to establish a random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) fingerprint database of chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) from different cultivars of Cornus officinalis and to convert RAPD markers to sequence characterized amplified regions (SCAR) markers. A method of extraction was established that was suitable for obtaining cpDNA from samples rapidly dried in silicone; an RAPD fingerprint database was built; and the genetic distance between samples was used as statistical clustering variables for calculating DICE genetic similarity coefficients and for building a kinship tree chart. RAPD markers were converted to SCAR markers to design specific primers, and samples from C. officinalis cultivars, plants of the same family, and its adulterants, were used for amplification and identification. Fifteen amplified primers with stable polymorphisms were screened for amplification of 130 copies of materials. In total, 57 sites were achieved, 40 of which were polymorphic, and the polymorphic rate was up to 70.18%. A genetic tree was built based on seven cultivars. SCAR markers of C. officinalis cpDNA were successfully converted into RAPD markers. cpDNA samples from hawthorn, C. officinalis, Cornus wood, and grape were used for SCAR amplification, and their bands were distinctly different. In conclusion, SCAR markers and cpDNA may be used for research on C. officinalis and its adulterants, and the results may provide a basis for identifying germplasm and screening fine varieties at a molecular level.

Abstract
Chirality is ubiquitous in nature. The associated optical activity has received much attention due to important applications in spectroscopy, analytical chemistry, crystallography and optics, however, artificial chiral optical materials are complex and difficult to fabricate, especially in the optical range. Here, we propose an ultrathin dual-polarity metamaterial circular polarizer by exploiting the mechanism of giant extrinsic chirality. The polarity of the circular polarizer with large suppression of linear anisotropy can be switched by changing the sign of incident angle. The microwave experiments and optical simulations demonstrate that the large angle of incidence facilitates the high-efficiency circular polarizer, which can be realized in the whole spectra from microwave to visible frequencies. The ultrathin single-layer metamaterials with extrinsic chirality will be a promising candidate for circular polarization devices.

Abstract
We demonstrate a multiband background-free terahertz (THz) switch in photoactive chiral metamaterial using polarization conversion. Orthogonal arrangement of two asymmetrical split-ring apertures allows a high polarization conversion efficiency and low copolarization transmission. The chiral metamaterial embedded with photoactive silicon promises a dynamic control on cross-polarization transmission and thus enables an efficient background-free THz switch. The on/off state of THz metamaterial switching can be efficiently controlled by an optical pump. The realization of a cross-polarization THz switch provides a new mechanism of mode switching to control THz wave propagation and will be a promising candidate for polarization devices.

Abstract
Fluctuations in glucose levels in diabetic patients can result in oxidative stress, resulting in an increased risk for diabetic complications. We investigated whether antioxidation would protect the kidney from oxidative stress in diabetic rats treated with insulin and provide evidence for the efficacy of antioxidant treatment in diabetes management. Diabetes was induced by injection of Streptozotocin intraperitoneally in male Wistar rats. Diabetic rats received either insulin, both insulin and Radix Astragali (RA), RA, or no treatment. The levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), interleukin 6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) and activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) in kidney were determined. The changes of blood glucose levels and body weight were monitored. The levels of serum creatinine (Scr) were determined. The expression of PKCα was determined by western blot. NF-κB activation in kidney was assessed using EMSA. Compared to diabetic rats treated with insulin alone, the diabetic rats treated with combination of insulin and RA showed: (1) significantly lower levels of MDA, IL-6, TNF-α, and Scr (p < 0.05); (2) significantly higher SOD and GSH-Px activities (p < 0.05); (3) significantly lower NF-κB activation and lower expression levels of PKCα (p < 0.05); (4) significantly smaller kidney-to-body weight ratio (p < 0.05). RA is an effective agent in lowering oxidative stress in diabetic rats treated with insulin. Antioxidation is beneficial in reducing the risk of kidney damage due to oxidative stress in diabetic patients.

Abstract
We present a fast and simple protocol for large-scale preparation of quaternary Cu(2)ZnSnSe(4) (CZTSe), as well as CZTSe/Cu(2)ZnSnS(4) (CZTS) core/shell nanowires using CuSe nanowire bundles as self-sacrificial templates. CuSe nanowire bundles were synthesized by reacting Cu(2 - x)Se nanowire bundles with sodium citrate solution. CZTSe nanowires were prepared by reacting CuSe nanowire bundles with Zn(CH(3)COO)(2) and SnCl(2) in triethylene glycol. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and selected area electron diffraction studies show that stannite CZTSe is formed. The formed CZTSe nanowire bundles have diameters of 200-400 nm and lengths of up to hundreds of micrometers. CZTSe/CZTS nanocable bundles with similar morphologies were grown by the addition of some elemental sulfur to the reaction system for growth of CZTSe bundles. The stannite CZTSe/kesterite CZTS core/shell structure of the grown nanocables was confirmed by XRD and high-resolution transmission electron microscope investigation. The influence of S/Se molar ratio in the reaction system on the crystallographic structures and optical properties of CZTSe/CZTS nanocables was studied. The obtained CZTSe/CZTS core/shell nanocable bundles show broad and enhanced optical absorption over the visible and near-infrared region, which is promising for use in photovoltaic applications.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of glucocorticoids (GCs) on appetite and gene expression of the hypothalamic appetite regulatory peptides, neuropeptide Y (NPY), agouti-related protein (AGRP) and cocaine and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART), in non-obese and obese rats. Both non-obese and obese rats were randomly assigned to three groups: normal saline, low- and high-dose GC groups (NSG, LDG and HDG, respectively), which received an intraperitoneal injection with normal saline (0.2 ml/100 g) or hydrocortisone sodium succinate at 5 and 15 mg/kg, respectively, for 20 days. The expression levels of NPY, AGRP and CART mRNA in the hypothalamus were measured by real-time quantitative PCR. Non-obese and obese rats were found to undergo weight loss after GC injection, and a higher degree of weight loss was observed in the HDG rats. The average and cumulative food intakes in the obese and non-obese rats injected with high-dose GC were lower compared to that in the NSG (p<0.05). mRNA expression levels of the orexigenic neuropeptides, NPY and AGRP, and the anorexigenic neuropeptide, CART, were significantly lower in the HDG than levels in the NSG for both the obese and non-obese rats (p<0.05). GC treatment decreased appetite and body weight, induced apparent glucolipid metabolic disturbances and hyperinsulinemia, while down-regulated mRNA expression levels of the orexigenic neuropeptides, NPY and AGRP, and anorexigenic neuropeptide, CART, in the hypothalamus in the rats. The mechanism which induces this neuropeptide expression requires further study.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Accumulating evidence suggests that adiponectin plays an important role in the genesis of obesity and insulin resistance. Although it has been shown that glucocortocoids (GC) inhibit adiponectin expression in vitro, there exist discrepant results in vivo. In this study, we observe the effect of GC on the serum adiponectin level and adiponectin expression in white adipose tissue (WAT) in male SD rats. METHODS An obese rat model was made by a high-fat diet. Both non-obese and obese rats were randomly divided into normal saline (intraperitoneal injection with normal saline 0.2ml/100gday for 20 days, NS), a low dose GC group (intraperitoneal injection with hydrocortisone sodium succinate 5mg/kgday for 20 days, LDG) and a high dose GC group, respectively (intraperitoneal injection with hydrocortisone sodium succinate 15mg/kgday for 20 days, HDG). Serum adiponectin levels were detected by ELISA and the adiponectin mRNA level was assayed by Northern blot. RESULTS The serum adiponectin level significantly decreased after 80 days of the high-fat diet (P<0.05), while it was not decreased after 80 days of the chow diet (P>0.05). The serum adioponectin levels in both the non-obese and obese rats were significantly decreased after a 20-day GC injection period (P<0.01). The adiponectin mRNA levels in epididymal fat after high dose GC injection, in both non-obese and obese rats were also decreased (P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS A high-fat diet decreased serum adiponectin levels in the rat. GC decreased serum adiponectin levels, and this might be due to inhibited adiponectin mRNA expression in WAT. High-fat diet and GC have a synergistic effect on inhibiting adiponectin expression in rats.

Abstract
Losses are the main evil that limits the use of metamaterials in practical applications. While radiation losses may be controlled by design, Joule losses are hereditary to the metamaterial structures. An exception is superconducting metamaterials, where Joule losses can be uniquely controlled with temperature in a very wide range. We put this in use by demonstrating temperature-dependent transmission in the millimeter-wave part of the spectrum in high-Tc superconducting cuprate metamaterials supporting sub-radiant resonances of Fano type.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To observe the effect of the Chinese medicine Shengjing Granule on spermatogenic disturbance in mice. METHODS Forty-six male Kunming mice were randomly divided into a normal (n = 10), a model (n = 12), a control (n = 12) and a Shengjing group (n = 12), and models of spermatogenic disturbance were established by intraperitoneal injection of cyclophosphamide in the latter three. Then the first two groups received intragastric administration of physiological saline and the second two that of clomiphene (21.6 mg/kg x d) and Shengjing Granule (16 g/kg x d), respectively, all for 15 days. On the following day, the testis weight was measured, the levels of the follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), the luteinizing hormone (LH) and testosterone (T) determined by radioimmunoassay. Histological observations were made of the testis tissues under the microscope. RESULTS The testis index and T level were (3.958 +/- 0.342) g/kg and (7.046 +/- 0.291) nmo/L, obviously increased, while the levels of FSH and LH were (2.947 +/- 0.587) mIU/ml and (3.254 +/- 0.492) mIU/ml, significantly decreased, in the Shengjing group, as compared with (3.525 +/- 0.462) g/kg, (6.231 +/- 0.317) nmol/L, (5.428 +/- 0.719) mIU/ml and (5.155 +/- 0.460) mIU/ml in the model group (P < 0.05). The number of spermatogenic cells on the seminiferous tubules and that of sperm in the lumina of the tubules were markedly increased in the Shenginjg group, compared with the models. CoCONCLUSIONShenginjg Granule is effective for spermatogenic disturbance in mice.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the influence and therapeutic effect of the Chinese herbal drug Shengjing Granule on varicocele in rats. METHODS A total of 80 male Sprague-Dawley rats were equally randomized into a sham operation group and 3 varicocele model groups, and the latter 3 again subdivided into a model, a Shengjing and a Clomifene group. Fifteen days after the modeling, the Shengjing and the Clomifene groups were intragastrically given Shengling Granule and Clomifene at the dose of 4 g/(kg x d) and 20 mg/(kg x d), respectively, while the model and sham operation groups were on normal diet. Thirty days later, the effects of Shengjing Granule were assessed by determining such serum sexual hormones as FSH, LH and T and observing the morphological changes of the testes of different groups of rats under the light microscope. RESULTS The testis constitution was better and the levels of FSH and LH were significantly lower in the Shengjing group than in the model and Clomifene groups (P<0.05) but markedly higher in the Clomifene group than in the other three. The T level showed no obvious difference among the Shengjing, Clomifene and sham operation groups but was significantly higher in the three groups than in the model group (P<0.05). CONCLUSION Shengjing Granule can not only protect the testis from but also repair varicocele-induced injury, probably with a better efficacy than Clomifene.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Mutations in mtDNA are thought to be responsible for the pathogenesis of maternally inherited diabetes. Here, we report a family with maternally inherited diabetes and deafness whose members did not harbour the mtDNA A3243G mutation, the most frequent point mutation in mitochondrial diabetic patients. This study aimed to investigate a possible other mtDNA mutation and its prevalence in type 2 diabetic patients. METHODS Height, body weight, waistline, and hip circumference were measured and serum biochemical marks determined in all members of the family. In addition, a 75 g oral glucose tolerance test and electric listening test were conducted in these members. Genomic DNA was prepared from peripheral leukocytes. Direct sequencing of PCR products was used to detect the mtDNA mutation in this family. The prevalence of mtDNA G3421A nucleotide substitutions was investigated by restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis in 1350 unrelated type 2 diabetic patients recruited by random cluster sampling from the central city area of Shanghai, China. RESULTS (1) A new missense homoplasmic mutation of mtDNA G3421A was found in a maternally inherited diabetic family and existed neither in 1350 unrelated type 2 diabetic patients nor in 50 non-diabetic individuals. (2) The mode of mutation and diabetes transmission was typical maternal inheritance in this family. (3) All diabetic family members were found to have an onset at 35-42 years of age, accompanied by deafness of varying degrees. CONCLUSION mtDNA G3421A (Val39Ile) found in a family with maternally inherited diabetes and deafness is a novel missense mutation. Whether this is a diabetogenic mutation and its effect on mitochondrial function needs to be further studied.
