Current-limiting and ultrafast system for the characterization of resistive random access memories

A new system for the ultrafast characterization of resistive switching phenomenon is developed to acquire the current during the Set and Reset process in a microsecond time scale. A new electronic circuit has been developed as a part of the main setup system, which is capable of (i) applying a hardware current limit ranging from nanoampers up to miliampers and (ii) converting the Set and Reset exponential gate current range into an equivalent linear voltage. The complete system setup allows measuring with a microsecond resolution. Some examples demonstrate that, with the developed setup, an in-depth analysis of resistive switching phenomenon and random telegraph noise can be made.

The Safety and Efficacy of Two-site Phacotrabeculectomy with Mitomycin C under Retrobulbar and Topical Anesthesia

Purpose: To evaluate and compare the safety and efficacy of combined two-site phacoemulsification and trabeculectomy surgery with mitomycin C (MMC) in glaucoma-cataract patients with retrobulbar or topical anesthesia.

Patients and methods: A retrospective, nonrandomized review of consecutive phacotrabeculectomy patients with a minimum follow-up time of 6 months, no previous glaucoma surgeries, and a preoperative visual acuity (VA) greater than light perception. The main outcome measures were preoperative and postoperative VA, intraocular pressure (IOP), use of glaucoma medications, and complications. A complete surgical success required an IOP from 6 to 18 mm Hg, no visually devastating complications, no return to surgery, and no use of glaucoma medications. Qualified success allowed the use of up to two glaucoma medications. Anesthesia groups were compared by student t-tests and log rank comparison of Kaplan-Meier survival rates.

Results: Eighty-seven eyes (83 patients) met inclusion criteria, with a mean follow-up of 19 ± 12 months (6-57 months). The average eye gained 3.1 ± 4.9 lines of VA, lost 4.0 ± 7.1 mm Hg of IOP, and decreased 1.0 ± 1.3 glaucoma medications. Retrobulbar and topical anesthesia groups had statistically equivalent mean changes in VA (p = 0.910), IOP (p = 0.268), and use of glaucoma medications (p = 0.964). Postoperative complication rates were also statistically similar (p = 0.580). Complete success was greater in the retrobulbar group (p = 0.006), however, qualified success was equivalent in both groups (p = 0.769).

Conclusion: Two-site phacotrabeculectomy with MMC in West Indian patients is as safe and effective for glaucoma-cataract patients with topical anesthesia as it is under retrobulbar anesthesia, and without short-term losses in VA and the chance of serious complications from injection.

Fetal cardiac biometry and function in HIV-infected pregnant women exposed to HAART therapy

OBJECTIVE

Previous studies have suggested that antiretroviral therapy in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected pregnant women can cause alterations in cardiac structure and function in fetuses or children, although the results are not very clear. The aim of this study is to assess whether or not these alterations are present in the heart of fetuses of HIV-infected pregnant women, undergoing treatment with highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART).

STUDY DESIGN

We performed a prospective study on 29 consecutive HIV-positive pregnant women treated with HAART and 70 consecutive HIV-negative pregnant women as controls. Fetal cardiac biometry and function was evaluated by echocardiography at 30-32 weeks of gestation. Fetal biometry, estimated fetal weight and umbilical artery Doppler were also measured.

RESULTS

We found E/A tricuspid ratio values slightly increased (0.84 vs 0.80, p = 0.03) and diastolic length shortened (49.7 vs 51.7%, p = 0.03) in the HIV-infected group. The rest of the biometric and functional cardiac parameters were not different between both groups. There were no cases of vertical transmission of HIV infection.

CONCLUSION

In HIV-infected pregnant women treated with HAART, no significant changes are showed in fetal cardiac parameters.

Understanding Latino Parents' Child Mental Health Literacy: Todos a bordo/All Aboard

OBJECTIVE

This article describes Phase 1 of a pilot that aims to develop, implement, and test an intervention to educate and simultaneously engage highly stressed Latino parents in child mental health services. A team of Spanish-speaking academic and community co-investigators developed the intervention using a community-based participatory research approach and qualitative methods.

METHOD

Through focus groups, the team identified parents' knowledge gaps and their health communication preferences.

RESULTS

Latino parents from urban communities need and welcome child mental health literacy interventions that integrate printed materials with videos, preferably in their native language, combined with guidance from professionals.

CONCLUSION

A 3-minute video in Spanish that integrates education entertainment strategies and a culturally relevant format was produced as part of the intervention to educate and simultaneously engage highly stressed Latino parents in child mental health care. It is anticipated that the intervention will positively impact service use among this group.

Periodic nanostructures on unpolished substrates and their integration in solar cells

We present a novel fabrication process based on laser interference lithography, lift-off and reactive ion etching, which allows us to fabricate periodic nanostructures on photovoltaic substrates with an average root mean square (RMS) roughness of 750 nm. We fabricate nanostructures on unpolished crystalline silicon substrates, which reduces their reflectance 30% as fabricated. When an additional passivation layer is deposited, the light trapping grows, achieving a reflectance reduction of 60%. In addition, we have successfully integrated the nanostructured substrates in silicon wafer-based solar cells following standard processes, achieving a final efficiency of 15.56%.

Outbreak of acute gastroenteritis caused by contamination of drinking water in a factory, the Basque Country

On 18 September 2013, the Gipuzkoa Epidemiology Unit was notified of an outbreak of acute gastroenteritis (AGE) among employees at a domestic appliance factory. The first signs of the outbreak had emerged at the end of June and at the time of the notification 30 workers were on sick leave for gastroenteritis. Some employees had had more than one episode and the main symptoms were diarrhoea and vomiting. An investigation began to identify the causative agent, assess exposure and determine the route of transmission. Data collected by a questionnaire identified 302 episodes of AGE among 238 people affected between June and September 2013. The source of water consumed was found to be a risk factor associated with the appearance of symptoms both in the crude and the adjusted analysis: odds ratio 1.8 (0.8-4.2) and 6.4 (4.2-9.8), respectively. Microbiological analysis of stool samples and of water confirmed the presence of norovirus and rotavirus. The environmental study detected a connection between an industrial use water system and drinking water at the factory. It was concluded that the outbreak was caused by mixed viral infections, due to contamination of drinking water.

PLANT OLIGOSACCHARIDES ENHANCE WHEAT DEFENCE RESPONSE AGAINST SEPTORIA LEAF BLOTCH

Our work provides the first evidence for elicitation and protection effects of preventive treatments with oligosaccharides (20%)-based new formulation (Oligos) against Mycosphaerella graminicola, a major pathogen of bread wheat (BW) and durum wheat (DW). In planta Oligos treatment led to strongly reduced hyphal growth, penetration, mesophyll colonization and fructification. During the necrotrophic phase, Oligos also drastically decreased the production of M. graminicola CWDE activities, such as xylanase and glucanase as well as protease activity in both wheat species, suggesting their correlation with disease severity. Concerning plant defence markers, PR2, Chi 4 precursor-, Per- and LOX-1-encoding genes were up-regulated, while glucanase (GLUC), catalase (CAT) and lipoxygenase (LOX) activities and total phenolic compound (PC) accumulation were induced in both (non-inoculated and inoculated contexts. In inoculated context, a localized accumulation of H2O2 and PC at fungal penetration sites and a specific induction of phenylalanine ammonia-Lyase (PAL) enzymatic activity were observed. Moreover, our experiment exhibited some similarities and differences in both wheat species responses. GLUC and CAT activities and H2O2 accumulation were more responsive in DW leaves, while LOX and PAL activities and PC accumulation occurred earlier and to a stronger extent in BW leaves. The tested Oligos formulation showed an interesting resistance induction activity characterized by a high and stable efficiency whatever the wheat species, suggesting it integration in common control strategies against STB on both DW and BW.

Comparison of water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) with crossbred and purebred Brahman cattle for growth performance on savannah and slaughter traits at four ages in Venezuela

Males (n = 132) of water buffalo (Buffalo), Brahman crossbred and purebred cattle (Brahman) were born, raised, weaned, castrated (half of the animals at 7 months) and fattened on the same grazing savannahs, and then slaughtered at four different ages (7, 17, 19 and 24 months) to compare growth and slaughter traits and examine post-weaning castration effects. Buffalo showed consistently faster weight gains and heavier carcasses but had lower dressing percentages than Brahman cattle due to higher proportions of hide, head, and red and white viscera at each age (P < 0.05). Additionally, Buffalo had abundant fat cover distribution, and whiter subcutaneous fat than Brahman (P < 0.05), this resulted in a higher proportion of Buffalo carcasses that graded in the second quality Venezuelan grade ‘A’ (P < 0.05). Regardless of species, bulls had higher average daily gain and liveweight than steers (P < 0.05); however, no differences were detected in carcass weight and dressing percentages (P > 0.05). Also, at the same weight steers produced carcasses with thicker back fat, more abundant fat cover distribution and whiter fat than bulls (P < 0.05). With respect to age groups, there were concomitant increases in slaughter weight, carcass weight, and dressing percentage as age increased (P < 0.01). As age advanced, carcasses had a more convex leg profile, abundant fat cover, thicker back fat, higher marbling and greater REA (P < 0.05). Based on the observed growth and carcass traits, Buffalo offer a promising alternative for meat production under savannah feeding production systems.

The superparamagnetic iron oxide is equivalent to the Tc99 radiotracer method for identifying the sentinel lymph node in breast cancer

BACKGROUND

Preoperative injection of Tc99 is standardly performed before sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLN) for breast cancer. Multiple questions have arisen concerning appropriate technique for SLNBs including site of injection, timing and injection material. The aim of this study was to assess the concordance between a new method, superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) and the Tc99 radiotracer to identify the SLN in early breast cancer.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Between July 2013 and March 2014, 120 patients with clinically node negative early breast cancer were included in the study. Patients were injected the day before the radiotracer for lymphoscintigraphy and injected the SPIO subareolar intraoperatively. SLN was excised if it was radioactive, magnetic or palpable. Patients signed an inform consent.

RESULTS

There was no drainage by either technique in 2 patients, so this leaves 118 patients for further analysis. Detection rate by Tc 99 was successful in 113 (95.7%%) patients and by SPIO in 116 (98.3%). Concordance rates per patient between techniques was 98.2%. The SLN was positive in 36 (30%) patients. Of this, SLN positivity was detected by both techniques in 32 patients. Mean number of SLNs by 99Tc and SPIO were 1.9 and 2.21 respectively (p = 0.001).

DISCUSSION

Detection of SLNs with SPIO allows for easy identification of axillary nodes, at a frequency not inferior to the radiotracer. It is an oncologically safe procedure, facilitates patients and operative room management and can be used to reliably identify SLNs in breast cancer.

History of chronic comorbidity and risk of chemotherapy-induced febrile neutropenia in cancer patients not receiving G-CSF prophylaxis

BACKGROUND

Chemotherapy-induced febrile neutropenia (FN) is a clinically important complication that affects patient outcome by delaying chemotherapy doses or reducing dose intensity. Risk of FN depends on chemotherapy- and patient-level factors. We sought to determine the effects of chronic comorbidities on risk of FN.

DESIGN

We conducted a cohort study to examine the association between a variety of chronic comorbidities and risk of FN in patients diagnosed with six types of cancer (non-Hodgkin lymphoma and breast, colorectal, lung, ovary, and gastric cancer) from 2000 to 2009 who were treated with chemotherapy at Kaiser Permanente Southern California, a large managed care organization. We excluded those patients who received primary prophylactic granulocyte colony-stimulating factor. History of comorbidities and FN events were identified using electronic medical records. Cox models adjusting for propensity score, stratified by cancer type, were used to determine the association between comorbid conditions and FN. Models that additionally adjusted for cancer stage, baseline neutrophil count, chemotherapy regimen, and dose reduction were also evaluated.

RESULTS

A total of 19 160 patients with mean age of 60 years were included; 963 (5.0%) developed FN in the first chemotherapy cycle. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease [hazard ratio (HR) = 1.30 (1.07-1.57)], congestive heart failure [HR = 1.43 (1.00-1.98)], HIV infection [HR = 3.40 (1.90-5.63)], autoimmune disease [HR = 2.01 (1.10-3.33)], peptic ulcer disease [HR = 1.57 (1.05-2.26)], renal disease [HR = 1.60 (1.21-2.09)], and thyroid disorder [HR = 1.32 (1.06-1.64)] were all associated with a significantly increased FN risk.

CONCLUSIONS

These results provide evidence that history of several chronic comorbidities increases risk of FN, which should be considered when managing patients during chemotherapy.

The First Report of Tomato chlorotic spot virus (TCSV) Infecting Long Beans and Chili Peppers in the Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic has a significant area of the country cultivated with vegetables. In July 2013, in the provinces of Moca and La Vega, horticultural crops showed typical tospovirus symptoms (>30% incidence), including bronzing, chlorosis, necrosis, and ring spots on leaves and fruits. Samples were collected from potatoes (Solanum tuberosum), long beans (Vignaun guiculata), chili peppers (Capsicum frutescens), sweet peppers (C. annuum), and tomatoes (S. lycopersicum). Serological tests were clearly positive for infection by Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) and/or related tospoviruses when tested with AgDia immunostrips. The viral RNA extracted from five plants per host was pooled to construct a cDNA library that was sequenced using an Illumina HiSeq 2000 platform. The paired-end reads were assembled using CLC Genomic Workbench version 6.0.3. The assembled contigs were submitted to BLASTx against a viral genome database. The results confirmed the presence of Tomato chlorotic spot virus (TCSV) and TSWV. Then, PCR tests were performed with primers pairs TSWV-LF 5' CTGTTGTCTATTGAGGATTGTG 3' AND TSWV-LR 5' CAGAGAGCTTGTTAATGCAGGAC 3' to amplify part of the TSWV L RNA, the pairs TCSV-SF 5' AACTGGGAAAGCAGAAAACC 3' and TCSV-SR 5' CCTTACTCCGAACATTGCA 3', and GRSV-SF 5' CTGTCAGGAAAATCTTGACCTG 3' and GRSV-SR 5' CTTGACTCCAAACATCTCGT 3' to detect part of the TCSV and Groundnut ringspot virus (GRSV) S segments. In the long bean and chili pepper samples from La Vega, only TCSV was detected (40% of the all samples) based on amplification of the expected size fragment with the S RNA specific primer pair. All the other samples were positive for TSWV and no GRSV was detected. The complete N gene of TCSV and TSWV were amplified using the primer pairs TCSV-NR2 5' CACACTGAACTGAACTATAACACAC 3' and TCSV-NF 5' ACCTTGAATCATATCTCTCG 3' and primers N-TSWV_FW 5' TACGGATCCGATGTCTAAGGTTAAGCTCAC 3' and N-TSWV_RV 5' TTATCTCGAGTCAAGCAAGTTCTGCGAG 3'. The TCSV N protein sequences (KJ399303 and KJ399304) were 99% identical with the TCSV found in processing tomatoes in the Dominican Republic (1) and the United States (2). The TSWV N protein sequences (KJ399313, KJ399314 and KJ399315) shared 96 to 98% identity with the TSWV N sequences available. Dot blot hybridization tests (1) using DIG-labeled specific TCSV N gene probe confirmed TCSV infection in PCR-positive long bean and chili pepper samples, whereas no hybridization signal was detected for TSWV-infected tomatoes, potatoes, sweet peppers, or healthy samples. In addition, no reassortants were detected based on amplification of the expected size RNA fragments (3). These other amplicons (KJ399301, KJ399299, KJ399302, and KJ399300) showed 98% identity with the L and M segments of TCSV. Thrips collected from symptomatic plants were identified mainly as Frankliniella schultzei, consistent with the main thrips species transmitting TCSV. In the last two years, TCSV was reported in North and Central America and in the Caribbean Basin (1,2,4). These findings have an important epidemiological impact since TCSV represents a new threat to other horticultural crops affected by this tospovirus. References: (1) O. Batuman et al. The mobility of calcium ions in corn dough prepared using commercial powder of alkaline-cooked grounded-corn kernel was determined in presence of a magnetic field. The ionic conduction was determined using 2 electrodes placed at 2 consecutives corners of the square samples: the excitation line was along one edge. Three different calcium concentrations [Ca] and 3 different magnetic field B conditions (B0, B-, B+) were analyzed; in all cases, the same amount of water was used. The relaxation times τ were determined by measuring the ionic current with and, immediately after, without excitation voltage. An empirical model, based on the obstruction effect characteristic of the ionic conduction and on the effect of the magnetic field B on the motion of the ions, was developed to explain the dependence of τ with [Ca] and B. The threshold concentration at which the Ca ions are not longer linked chemically to the starch molecules and move freely in the dough interior was obtained.

PRACTICAL APPLICATION

It was possible to determine the free-to-link threshold concentration for calcium ions in alkaline-cooked grounded-corn kernel dough; this is near 1.5% Ca. The magnetic field allows to separate and measuring different types of ions; a model to explain the dependence of the relaxation time with the magnetic field was included.

Fruit wastes fermentation for phenolic antioxidants production and their application in manufacture of edible coatings and films

Agro-industrial by-products are important sources of potent bioactive phenolic compounds. These compounds are of extreme relevance for food and pharmacological industries due to their great variety of biological activities. Fermentation represents an environmentally clean technology for production and extraction of these bioactive compounds, providing high quality and high activity extracts, which can be incorporated in foods using coatings/films wax-based in order to avoid alterations in their quality. In this document is presented an overview about importance and benefits of solid-state fermentation, pointing out this bioprocess as an alternative technology for use agro-industrial by-products as substrates to produce valuable secondary metabolites and their applications as food quality conservatives.

DNA replication stress in CHK1-depleted tumour cells triggers premature (S-phase) mitosis through inappropriate activation of Aurora kinase B

The disruption of DNA replication in cells triggers checkpoint responses that slow-down S-phase progression and protect replication fork integrity. These checkpoints are also determinants of cell fate and can help maintain cell viability or trigger cell death pathways. CHK1 has a pivotal role in such S-phase responses. It helps maintain fork integrity during replication stress and protects cells from several catastrophic fates including premature mitosis, premature chromosome condensation and apoptosis. Here we investigated the role of CHK1 in protecting cancer cells from premature mitosis and apoptosis. We show that premature mitosis (characterized by the induction of histone H3 phosphorylation, aberrant chromatin condensation, and persistent RPA foci in arrested S-phase cells) is induced in p53-deficient tumour cells depleted of CHK1 when DNA synthesis is disrupted. These events are accompanied by an activation of Aurora kinase B in S-phase cells that is essential for histone H3 Ser10 phosphorylation. Histone H3 phosphorylation precedes the induction of apoptosis in p53-/- tumour cell lines but does not appear to be required for this fate as an Aurora kinase inhibitor suppresses phosphorylation of both Aurora B and histone H3 but has little effect on cell death. In contrast, only a small fraction of p53+/+ tumour cells shows this premature mitotic response, although they undergo a more rapid and robust apoptotic response. Taken together, our results suggest a novel role for CHK1 in the control of Aurora B activation during DNA replication stress and support the idea that premature mitosis is a distinct cell fate triggered by the disruption of DNA replication when CHK1 function is suppressed.
