Perovskite-Hematite Tandem Cells for Efficient Overall Solar Driven Water Splitting

Photoelectrochemical water splitting half reactions on semiconducting photoelectrodes have received much attention but efficient overall water splitting driven by a single photoelectrode has remained elusive due to stringent electronic and thermodynamic property requirements. Utilizing a tandem configuration wherein the total photovoltage is generated by complementary optical absorption across different semiconducting electrodes is a possible pathway to unassisted overall light-induced water splitting. Because of the low photovoltages generated by conventional photovoltaic materials (e.g., Si, CIGS), such systems typically consist of triple junction design that increases the complexity due to optoelectrical trade-offs and are also not cost-effective. Here, we show that a single solution processed organic-inorganic halide perovskite (CH3NH3PbI3) solar cell in tandem with a Fe2O3 photoanode can achieve overall unassisted water splitting with a solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency of 2.4%. Systematic electro-optical studies were performed to investigate the performance of tandem device. It was found that the overall efficiency was limited by the hematite's photocurrent and onset potential. To understand these limitations, we have estimated the intrinsic solar to chemical conversion efficiency of the doped and undoped Fe2O3 photoanodes. The total photopotential generated by our tandem system (1.87 V) exceeds both the thermodynamic and kinetic requirements (1.6 V), resulting in overall water splitting without the assistance of an electrical bias.

Phosphonic Acid Modification of GaInP2 Photocathodes Toward Unbiased Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

The p-type semiconductor GaInP2 has a nearly ideal bandgap (∼1.83 eV) for hydrogen fuel generation by photoelectrochemical water splitting but is unable to drive this reaction because of misalignment of the semiconductor band edges with the water redox half reactions. Here, we show that attachment of an appropriate conjugated phosphonic acid to the GaInP2 electrode surface improves the band edge alignment, closer to the desired overlap with the water redox potentials. We demonstrate that this surface modification approach is able to adjust the energetic position of the band edges by as much as 0.8 eV, showing that it may be possible to engineer the energetics at the semiconductor/electrolyte interface to allow for unbiased water splitting with a single photoelectrode having a bandgap of less than 2 eV.

Quantifying bulk and surface recombination processes in nanostructured water splitting photocatalysts via in situ ultrafast spectroscopy

A quantitative description of recombination processes in nanostructured semiconductor photocatalysts-one that distinguishes between bulk (charge transport) and surface (chemical reaction) losses-is critical for advancing solar-to-fuel technologies. Here we present an in situ experimental framework that determines the bias-dependent quantum yield for ultrafast carrier transport to the reactive interface. This is achieved by simultaneously measuring the electrical characteristics and the subpicosecond charge dynamics of a heterostructured photoanode in a working photoelectrochemical cell. Together with direct measurements of the overall incident-photon-to-current efficiency, we illustrate how subtle structural modifications that are not perceivable by conventional X-ray diffraction can drastically affect the overall photocatalytic quantum yield. We reveal how charge carrier recombination losses occurring on ultrafast time scales can limit the overall efficiency even in nanostructures with dimensions smaller than the minority carrier diffusion length. This is particularly true for materials with high carrier concentration, where losses as high as 37% are observed. Our methodology provides a means of evaluating the efficacy of multifunctional designs where high overall efficiency is achieved by maximizing surface transport yield to near unity and utilizing surface layers with enhanced activity.

Spontaneous water oxidation at hematite (α-Fe2O3) crystal faces

Hematite (α-Fe2O3) persists as a promising candidate for photoelectrochemical water splitting, but a slow oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at its surfaces remains a limitation. Here we extend a series of studies that examine pH-dependent surface potentials and electron-transfer properties of effectively perfect low-index crystal faces of hematite in contact with simple electrolyte. Zero-resistance amperometry (ZRA) was performed in a two electrode configuration to quantify spontaneous dark current between hematite crystal face pairs (001)/(012), (001)/(113), and (012)/(113) at pH 3. Exponentially decaying currents initially of up to 200 nA were reported between faces over 4 min experiments. Fourth-order ZRA kinetics indicated rate limitation by the OER for current that flows between (001)/(012) and (001)/(113) face pairs, with the (012) and (113) faces serving as the anodes when paired with (001). The cathodic partner reaction is reductive dissolution of the (001) face, converting surface Fe(3+) to solubilized aqueous Fe(2+), at a rate maintained by the OER at the anode. In contrast, OER rate limitation does not manifest for the (012)/(113) pair. The uniqueness of the (001) face is established in terms of a faster intrinsic ability to accept the protons required for the reductive dissolution reaction. OER rate limitation inversely may thus arise from sluggish kinetics of hematite surfaces to dispense with the protons that accompany the four-electron OER. The results are explained in terms of semiquantitative energy band diagrams. The finding may be useful as a consideration for tailoring the design of polycrystalline hematite photoanodes that present multiple terminations to the interface with electrolyte.

Controllable morphology and conductivity of electrodeposited Cu₂O thin film: effect of surfactants

Both the morphology and conductivity of Cu2O films are controlled in a facile electrodeposition process by tuning the concentration of surfactants. With the increase of the concentration of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) in the plating solution, the average size of Cu2O crystals increases, and the electrical conductivity of Cu2O films changes from n-type to p-type. When the concentrations of SDS are lower than 0.85 mM, the electrodeposited Cu2O films show n-type conductivity because of the formation of oxygen vacancies or copper atoms. When the concentration of SDS is higher than 1.70 mM, the electrodeposited Cu2O films show p-type conductivity owing to the formation of copper vacancies. The concentrations of both the donors and the acceptors increase with the concentration of SDS. The effects of surfactants on the morphology and conductivity of electrodeposited Cu2O films are attributed to the adsorption of SDS molecules on the electrode substrate occupying the deposition sites of Cu(2+) ions and the adsorption of SDS micelles to Cu(2+) ions hindering the diffusion of Cu(2+) ions to the electrode, which affect the reduction rate of Cu(2+) ions and the formation of oxygen vacancies or copper vacancies during the electrodeposition.

Stable quantum dot photoelectrolysis cell for unassisted visible light solar water splitting

Sunlight is an ideal source of energy, and converting sunlight into chemical fuels, mimicking what nature does, has attracted significant attention in the past decade. In terms of solar energy conversion into chemical fuels, solar water splitting for hydrogen production is one of the most attractive renewable energy technologies, and this achievement would satisfy our increasing demand for carbon-neutral sustainable energy. Here, we report corrosion-resistant, nanocomposite photoelectrodes for spontaneous overall solar water splitting, consisting of a CdS quantum dot (QD) modified TiO2 photoanode and a CdSe QD modified NiO photocathode, where cadmium chalcogenide QDs are protected by a ZnS passivation layer and gas evolution cocatalysts. The optimized device exhibited a maximum efficiency of 0.17%, comparable to that of natural photosynthesis with excellent photostability under visible light illumination. Our device shows spontaneous overall water splitting in a nonsacrificial environment under visible light illumination (λ > 400 nm) through mimicking nature's "Z-scheme" process. The results here also provide a conceptual layout to improve the efficiency of solar-to-fuel conversion, which is solely based on facile, scalable solution-phase techniques.

Improved photoelectrochemical activity of CaFe2O4/BiVO4 heterojunction photoanode by reduced surface recombination in solar water oxidation

A bismuth vanadate photoanode was first fabricated by the metal-organic decomposition method and particles of calcium ferrite were electrophoretically deposited to construct a heterojunction photoanode. The characteristics of the photoanodes were investigated in photoelectrochemical water oxidation under simulated 1 sun (100 mW cm(-2)) irradiation. Relative to the pristine BiVO4 anode, the formation of the heterojunction structure of CaFe2O4/BiVO4 increased the photocurrent density by about 60%. The effect of heterojunction formation on the transfer of charge carriers was investigated using hydrogen peroxide as a hole scavenger. It was demonstrated that the heterojunction formation reduced the charge recombination on the electrode surface with little effect on bulk recombination. The modification with an oxygen evolving catalyst, cobalt phosphate (Co-Pi), was also beneficial for improving the efficiency of CaFe2O4/BiVO4 heterojunction photoanode mainly by increasing the stability.

2D ZnIn(2)S(4) nanosheet/1D TiO(2) nanorod heterostructure arrays for improved photoelectrochemical water splitting

We report the fabrication of 2D ZnIn2S4 nanosheet/1D TiO2 nanorod heterojunction arrays by a facile hydrothermal process and their use as photoelectrodes in a photoelectrochemical (PEC) cell for high-performance solar water splitting. The morphology, microstructure, and phase of pristine TiO2 and 2D ZnIn2S4 nanosheet/1D TiO2 nanorod heterojunction arrays were characterized in detail. PEC measurements showed that 2D/1D heterojunction arrays offered enhanced photocurrent density (3 times higher than that of pristine TiO2), negatively shifted onset potential from 0.05 to -0.53 V, and high light on/off cycle stability. Electrochemical impedance investigation attested to a significant improvement of the interface electron transfer kinetics in this heterojunction, thus facilitating electron-hole separation, transfer, and collection, which resulted in enhanced PEC properties.

Electrochemical Synthesis of p-Type CuFeO2 Electrodes for Use in a Photoelectrochemical Cell

A new electrodeposition route was developed to prepare p-type CuFeO2 as a thin film-type electrode for use as a photocathode in a solar water splitting cell. The resulting p-CuFeO2 film has a bandgap energy of ca. 1.55 eV, with its conduction band edge located at a more negative potential than the reduction potential of water. Various photoelectrochemical properties of the p-CuFeO2 electrode were investigated, and its photoelectrochemical hydrogen production in 1 M NaOH solution was confirmed by gas chromatography. The incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency plot confirmed that p-CuFeO2 has the ability to utilize the entire range of visible light.

Improvement in the photoelectrochemical responses of PCBM/TiO2 electrode by electron irradiation

The photoelectrochemical (PEC) responses of electron-irradiated 66-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM)/TiO2 electrodes were evaluated in a PEC cell. By coating PCBM on TiO2 nanoparticle film, the light absorption of PCBM/TiO2 electrode has expanded to the visible light region and improved the PEC responses compared to bare TiO2 electrode. The PEC responses were further improved by irradiating an electron beam on PCBM/TiO2 electrodes. Compared to non-irradiated PCBM/TiO2 electrodes, electron irradiation increased the photocurrent density and the open-circuit potential of PEC cells by approximately 90% and approximately 36%, respectively at an optimum electron irradiation condition. The PEC responses are carefully evaluated correlating with the optical and electronic properties of electron-irradiated PCBM/TiO2 electrodes.
