Tolciclate: further antimycotic studies

In vitro comparison on dermatophytes showed, on a microgram-per-milliliter basis, that tolciclate was more active than clotrimazole and miconazole in inhibiting the growth of dermatophytes in Sabouraud agar with and without 10% horse serum.

New broad-spectrum alkylthio cephalosporins

A series of 7-substituted alkyl-thio-acylaminocephalosporins with the following general formula were prepared and tested for in vitro antibacterial activity: (formula: see text). We tried in our research to find any relationship between antibacterial activity and pharmacokinetic properties on the one hand, and chemical structure on the other. The most interesting products were also studied for their in vivo antibacterial activity in experimental acute systemic infections in the mouse.

Prolonged and monosymptomatic dysphasic status epilepticus

Dysphasic seizures are an infrequent form of epilepsy, and their serial appearance as a partial status epilepticus is quite exceptional. The young patient reported here had a partial dysphasic status epilepticus of 3 weeks' duration without other temporal lobe seizures. Simultaneous serial electroencephalograms, tape recordings of the seizures, and repeated neuropsychologic ictal examinations permitted studies of increased impairment of neuropsychologic function on testing and the appearance of new irritative discharges on encephalography.

Antitussive drugs. II. Bronchopulmonary effects of dextromethorphan and doxylamine

Unlike codeine, dextromethorphan does not cause pulmonary vasoconstiction in the anesthetized dog. The other effects of dextromethorphan are as follwos: a rise in pulmonary resistance indicating bronchoconstriction, and increase in pulmonary blood flow relating to a positive inotropic action, and a decrease in aortic blood pressure resulting from systemic vasodilation. These effects are blocked by previous injections of doxylamine, an antihistaminic drug. This interaction suggests a rationale for the combined use of dextromethorphan and doxylamine in the treatment of upper respiratory infection.

Antitussive drugs. I. Cardiopulmonary effects of codeine

In the anesthetized dog, codeine causes a combination of pulmonary vasoconstriction and systemic vasodilation. Pulmonary blood flow is either increased or decreased, relating to a primary stimulation or depression of myocardial contractility. The overall effect is an elevation in pulmonary arterial pressure largely due to vasoconstriction of the pulmonary blood vessels.

Recent views on the relationship between carcinoma of the cervix and the herpes virus are presented. While the question is still very open, it can nervetheless be suggested that the type 2 virus plays a part in the pathogenesis of the tumour. Sexual relationships, pregnancy and hormones are important factors in this connection.
