Abstract
BACKGROUND Data from the Carolina Breast Cancer Study, a population-based, case-control study of breast cancer in African-American and white women residents of North Carolina, were evaluated to determine whether specific aspects of lactation are associated with a reduction in the risk of breast cancer. METHODS Analyses included 751 parous cases and 742 parous controls frequency-matched on age and race. Information on lactation, reproductive history, lifestyle characteristics and family history were obtained through a personal interview. RESULTS When women who breastfed were compared to those who never breastfed, odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals of 0.8 (0.5-1.1) and 0.7 (0.5-0.9) were found for women 20-49 years and 50-74 years, respectively. Similar inverse associations were observed for each of three categories of lifetime duration (1-3, 4-12, 13+ months). The inverse associations persisted and did not vary when number of children breastfed, ages at first and last lactation and lactational amenorrhoea were examined. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that any lactation, regardless of duration or timing, is associated with a slight reduction in the risk of breast cancer among younger and older parous women.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess excess maternal transmission of type 2 diabetes in a multiethnic cohort. Previous studies have reported higher prevalence of diabetes among mothers of probands with type 2 diabetes than among fathers. This analysis is vulnerable to biases, and this pattern has not been observed in all populations or races. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS We assessed evidence for excess maternal transmission among 42,533 survey respondents with type 2 diabetes (probands) by calculating the prevalence of diabetes in their siblings and offspring. To assess data quality, we evaluated completeness of family history data provided. Accuracy of family information reported by probands was also evaluated by comparing survey responses in a subsample of 206 probands with family histories modified after further interviews with relatives. RESULTS Siblings (n = 60,532) of probands with affected mothers had a greater prevalence of diabetes (20%) than those with affected fathers (17%) (P < 0.001 for adjusted odds ratios). Prevalence of diabetes was higher among the offspring (n = 72,087) of female (3.4%) versus male (2.2%) probands (P < 0.001 for adjusted odds ratios). These patterns were evident in all races and both sexes; however, the effect size was clinically insignificant in African-Americans and male offspring. In general, probands provided more complete data about diabetes status for the maternal arm of the pedigree than the paternal arm. Completeness of knowledge was not related to proband sex, but was related to education and race, and inversely to age. Accuracy of proband-reported family history was consistently good (kappa statistics generally > 0.70). CONCLUSIONS Excess maternal transmission was observed in all races and both sexes, although the size of the excess was negligible in African-Americans and male offspring. Potential reporting and censoring biases are discussed.

Abstract
Proximal myotonic myopathy is a recently described autosomal dominant condition characterized by proximal myopathy, cataracts, intermittent myotonia, and myalgia. We report a further family with this condition. The proband and her two sisters presented with myotonia during pregnancy which resolved after each delivery. Two sisters experienced myalgia between each pregnancy. This relationship between pregnancy and symptom exacerbation suggests an intriguing hormonal influence in PROMM.

Abstract
PURPOSE Despite concerns about declining participation rates in epidemiologic studies in recent years, relatively few papers have discussed obstacles to recruiting study participants or strategies for optimizing response rates. This report describes factors associated with nonparticipation in a population-based, case-control study of breast cancer and discusses ways to overcome barriers to participation. METHODS Contact and cooperation rates were calculated for participants in the Carolina Breast Cancer Study (CBCS), stratified by case status, age, race, and race of interviewer. Demographic and breast cancer risk factor characteristics of partial and full responders also were compared. RESULTS Contact rates and cooperation rates varied by case/control status and demographic characteristics. Contact rates were lower among controls, younger women, and black women. Cooperation rates were lower among controls, older women, and black cases. Cooperation rates were higher among both black and nonblack women when participants and interviewers were concordant on race. CONCLUSIONS Obstacles to recruitment seem to differ among race and age subgroups, suggesting that recruitment strategies may need to be tailored to potential participants based upon demographic characteristics. Strategies have been implemented to improve response rates in this and other epidemiologic studies; however, additional research and innovation in this area are needed.

Abstract
In the aftermath of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), employers need to carefully examine their wellness programs and in particular the incentives or penalties they have installed to encourage employees to adopt healthy lifestyles. Employers should look at the reasons they offer discounts, exclusions and wellness programs and assess how effective these measures are. They may want to replace them with "positive" approaches such as health fairs and education programs.

Abstract
Townes-Brocks syndrome (TBS) is an autosomal dominantly inherited malformation syndrome characterized by anal, renal, limb, and ear anomalies. Recently, we showed that mutations in the putative zinc finger transcription factor gene SALL1 cause TBS. To determine the spectrum of SALL1 mutations and to investigate the genotype-phenotype correlations in TBS, we examined 23 additional families with TBS or similar phenotypes for SALL1 mutations. In 9 of these families mutations were identified. None of the mutations has previously been described. Two of these mutations are nonsense mutations, one of which occurred in three unrelated families. Five of the mutations are short deletions. All of the mutations are located 5' of the first double zinc finger (DZF) encoding region and are therefore predicted to result in putative prematurely terminated proteins lacking all DZF domains. This suggests that only SALL1 mutations that remove the DZF domains result in TBS. We also present evidence that in rare cases SALL1 mutations can lead to phenotypes similar to Goldenhar syndrome. However, phenotypic differences in TBS do not seem to depend on the site of mutation.

Abstract
The effect of body mass index (BMI) and waist:hip ratio (WHR) on plasma levels of organochlorines [i.e., 1,1-dichloro-2,2-bis(p-chlorophenyl)ethylene (DDE)] was investigated in a sample of black and white women drawn from a population-based study in North Carolina. Organochlorine levels were determined in plasma samples from 99 women selected on the basis of race (black versus white) and quartile of the WHR (1st versus 4th). Of a panel of 20 organochlorine compounds tested, only DDE was detectable in most study subjects. Measurements of height, weight, and waist and hip circumferences were taken during an in-person interview. Information was elicited regarding dietary, residential, and breast-feeding histories. Results of multiple regression analyses indicate that black women had significantly higher plasma levels of DDE than white women. These levels were independent of BMI and WHR. BMI but not WHR was also found to be an independent predictor of DDE plasma level. These results suggest that black/white differences should be considered in studies that explore the relationship between environmental contaminants and various disease outcomes, such as breast cancer risk. In addition, BMI may affect circulating levels of contaminants and should also be considered a potentially important modifying factor for exposure to lipophilic substances.

Abstract
A previous report in this journal has suggested that germline deletions in the proline-alanine-rich (PAPA-repeat) region of P57 (KIP2) are associated with increased risk of a variety of cancers, including breast cancer. We have analyzed the association of P57 PAPA-repeat deletion polymorphisms and breast cancer risk as part of a population-based case-control study of breast cancer. We have not observed an association between the presence of one or two copies of deletion polymorphisms in P57 and breast cancer risk (adjusted odds ratio: 1.1, 95% confidence interval: 0.6-2.0). Further investigation is necessary to determine the functional significance of P57 deletion polymorphisms and their potential relationship with disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study examines genetic and behavioral determinants of waist-hip ratio (WHR) and waist circumference among women twins. RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURES Six hundred eighty participants from the second examination of the Kaiser-Permanente Women Twins Study (1989 to 1990) were included. Women ranged in age from 31 to 90 years, and included 59% monozygotic and 41% dizygotic twins. Heritabilities of WHR and waist circumference were estimated (range=0 to 1) using three different statistical methods. Linear regression models that adjusted for the lack of independence within twin pairs were used to assess associations between behavioral variables, WHR, and waist circumference. RESULTS Age and body mass index-adjusted heritability estimates ranged from 0.36 to 0.61 for WHR and 0.72 to 0.82 for waist circumference. When considered individually, after adjusting for age and body mass index, all behavioral characteristics, except calorie-adjusted fat intake, were significantly (p<0. 10) associated with waist circumference and WHR. Greater central adiposity was associated with lower education, higher alcohol consumption, lower physical activity, current cigarette smoking, higher parity, and postmenopausal status without hormone replacement therapy. In multivariate models, these associations persisted, except neither educational attainment nor alcohol intake was significantly associated with waist circumference. In longitudinal analyses, both measures were positively associated with current or recent-past smoking; infrequent or inconsistent physical activity; and long-term, daily consumption of alcohol. DISCUSSION These cross-sectional and longitudinal associations are consistent with genetic and behavioral predictors of waist circumference and WHR. Whereas the evidence for genetic influences is stronger for waist circumference, both body fat measures may be similarly influenced by the behavioral factors considered.

Abstract
Recent studies suggest that a polymorphism in catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) is associated with increased risk of breast cancer. Methylation by COMT is the principal pathway for inactivation of catechol estrogens, which are hypothesized to participate in estrogen-induced carcinogenesis. We examined the association of COMT genotype and breast cancer risk in a population-based, case-control study of invasive breast cancer in North Carolina. The study population consisted of 654 cases and 642 controls, with approximately equal numbers of African-American and white women and women under the age of 50 and aged 50 or over. Contrary to previous reports, we did not observe an association between one or more copies of the low activity COMT allele (COMT-L) and breast cancer risk. Multivariate relative risks (RRs) were 0.8 (95% confidence interval: 0.6-1.1) for COMT-HL and 0.8 (0.6-1.1) for COMT-LL, compared with the COMT-HH genotype. RRs for COMT did not differ among African-American and white women and we did not observe strong modification of RR estimates by menopausal status, body mass index, physical activity or other covariates. Our results suggest that COMT genotype is not related to breast cancer risk.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Later menarche, and a longer time until onset of regular cycling, are considered markers of lower lifetime exposure to circulating ovarian hormones. While later age at menarche is associated with reduced breast cancer risk, evidence for the relationship between time until onset of regular cycles and breast cancer is inconsistent. We evaluated both associations with breast cancer risk. METHODS We used data from the Carolina Breast Cancer Study, a population-based case-control study of breast cancer among White and Black women aged 20 to 74 years, residing in central and eastern North Carolina (United States). Cases were diagnosed between May 1993 and June 1996. Unconditional logistic regression models were limited to women with complete data for the risk factors considered (n = 830 cases, 758 controls). RESULTS We observed an inverse relationship between age at menarche and breast cancer risk, but found little support for the hypothesis that a longer time until onset of regular menstrual cycling was associated with reduced risk of breast cancer (odds ratios = 1.0 [95 percent confidence interval (CI) = 0.7-1.5], and 1.2 [CI = 0.8-1.6], respectively, for 1-4 years and < 1 year until onset of regular cycling, relative to 5+ years). There was little relationship between age at menarche and time until regular cycling. We found strong evidence that delays in onset of regular cycling were associated with increased frequency of irregular cycles throughout young adulthood. CONCLUSIONS Given the inconsistent findings regarding the links between menstrual cycle characteristics and breast cancer, and recent recommendations to delay menarche and alter the patterns of cycles of young women in order to reduce breast cancer risk, this topic calls for further, innovative study.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Vascular compression of the left mainstem bronchus (LMSB) between the descending aorta (DA) and pulmonary artery (PA) has been suggested as a cause for LMSB narrowing in children. These anatomic relationships have not been compared with those in children with a normal LMSB. Materials and methods. We undertook a retrospective review of the medical and radiologic records of 10 symptomatic young children (1-19 months, 5 boys, 5 girls) with MR demonstration of LMSB narrowing and compared them to 40 young children without great vessel or bronchial abnormality on MR (1 week-19 months, 28 boys, 12 girls). Chest MR evaluation included assessment of airway and great vessel anatomy with specific attention to the course of the LMSB and its relationship to the adjacent DA and PA. The position of the DA in relation to the spine was carefully evaluated. RESULTS Five children had focal and five had diffuse LMSB narrowing. DA position at the level of the crossing LMSB: in 40% of symptomatic children the DA was located in front of the adjacent vertebral body; in 40%, 1/2-3/4 and in 20% 1/4-1/2 of the circumference of the DA was located anterior to the spine. In the control group, the DA was prespinal in 10%, with a trend toward a more paraspinal location of the DA. The trend toward a difference in position of the DA between symptomatic and control patients was statistically significant (P < 0.05). DA position was not related to age (up to 19 months). At the level where the LMSB crossed the DA, a segment of the PA was located anterior to the LMSB, more often the right PA (RPA) or pulmonary bifurcation in symptomatic children and the left PA (LPA) in controls. No correlation was apparent between length of LMSB narrowing and DA or PA position. Chest radiographic abnormalities, when present, were subtle. Excellent MR/bronchoscopic correlation of LMSB narrowing was found in nine of the ten symptomatic children. One child underwent posterior aortopexy and ligation of the ligamentum arteriosum. CONCLUSION LMSB narrowing is well-defined by MR imaging. While a prespinal position of the DA occurs in some children as a normal variant, it is more common and more marked in children with LMSB narrowing. Vascular compression of the LMSB between an anteriorly positioned DA and the pulmonary artery appears to be important in children with symptomatic LMSB narrowing.

Abstract
A nested case-control study was conducted to investigate the hypothesis that women with high levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) are at an increased risk of breast cancer. The source population was a cohort of 95,000 women enrolled in the Kaiser Permanente Medical Care Program who underwent a routine multiphasic health examination between 1964 and 1971. From the more than 2,000 breast cancer cases diagnosed in this cohort, 200 cases were randomly selected for this study. For each case, one control who matched on age and date of examination was chosen. Lipid and lipoprotein levels were measured in archived serum samples collected at the time of the women's examinations. Breast cancer risk factor information was obtained from questionnaires completed by the women when their blood was drawn and was supplemented with information from medical records. HDL-C levels were not significantly different between the cases and controls overall; however, a statistically significant interaction between the HDL-C level and menopausal status at diagnosis was detected. Premenopausal cases had mean HDL-C levels 3.48 mg/dl lower than matched controls [95% confidence interval (CI), -7.05, 0.09], whereas postmenopausal cases had levels 2.05 mg/dl higher than controls (95% CI, -0.94, 5.03). In multivariate conditional logistic regression analyses, the odds ratio associated with each 1 mg/dl increase in HDL-C was 0.96 (95% Cl, 0.93-1.0) for premenopausal women and 1.02 (95% CI, 0.99-1.05) for postmenopausal women. Although many breast cancer risk factors are associated with high HDL-C, the relationship between breast cancer and HDL-C was independent of other factors evaluated.

Abstract
To examine the effects of smoking and N-acetylation genetics on breast cancer risk, we analyzed data from an ongoing, population-based, case-control study of invasive breast cancer in North Carolina. The study population consisted of 498 cases and 473 controls, with approximately equal numbers of African-American and white women, and women under the age of 50 and age 50 years or older. Among premenopausal women, there was no association between current smoking [odds ratio (OR), 0.9; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.5-1.5] or past smoking (OR, 1.0; 95% CI, 0.6-1.6) and breast cancer risk. Among postmenopausal women, there was also no association with current smoking (OR, 1.2; 95% CI, 0.7-2.0); however, a small increase in risk was observed for past smoking (OR, 1.5; 95% CI, 1.0-2.4). For postmenopausal women who smoked in the past, ORs and 95% CIs were 3.4 (1.4-8.1) for smoking within the past 3 years, 3.0 (1.3-6.7) for smoking 4-9 years ago, and 0.6 (0.3-1.4) for smoking 10-19 years ago. Neither N-acetyltransferase 1 (NAT1) nor N-acetyltransferase 2 (NAT2) genotype alone was associated with increased breast cancer risk. There was little evidence for modification of smoking effects according to genotype, except among postmenopausal women. Among postmenopausal women, ORs for smoking within the past 3 years were greater for women with the NAT1*10 genotype (OR, 9.0; 95% CI, 1.9-41.8) than NAT1-non*10 (OR, 2.5; 95% CI, 0.9-7.2) and greater for NAT2-rapid genotype (OR, 7.4; 95% CI, 1.6-32.6) than NAT2-slow (OR, 2.8; 95% CI, 0.4-8.0). Future studies of NAT genotypes and breast cancer should investigate the effects of environmental tobacco smoke, diet, and other exposures.

Abstract
Established breast cancer risk factors, in addition to being relatively unmodifiable, are highly prevalent among US women. Previous reports of population attributable fraction for the established risk factors have used definitions that resulted in 75-100% of women in the source population labeled exposed. The practical value of such estimates has not been discussed; further, the estimates have frequently been misinterpreted. In the context of examining the interpretation and public health value of such estimates, the authors demonstrate the sensitivity of the population attributable fraction to changes in exposure cutpoints. They use data from the Carolina Breast Cancer Study, a case-control study of breast cancer conducted in North Carolina between 1993 and 1996. For the four established risk factors (menarche before age 14 years, first birth at age 20 years or later/nulliparity, family history of breast cancer, and history of benign breast biopsy), the estimated population attributable fraction was 0.25 (95% confidence interval 0.06-0.48). Over 98% of the source population was exposed to at least one of these risk factors. The population attributable fraction estimate was reduced to 0.15 when more restrictive definitions of early menarche (less than age 12 years) and late age at first full-term pregnancy (30 years or more) were used (proportion exposed, 0.62). Population attributable fractions for established breast cancer risk factors probably have little public health value because of both the high proportions exposed and the relative unmodifiability of the risk factor distributions.

Abstract
A population-based series of incident cases of malignant glioma were analyzed for mutations in the tumor suppressor gene p53. Exons 4-8 were screened using PCR-single-strand conformation analysis and confirmed through direct sequencing. Of 62 tumors analyzed, 12 (19%) contained mutations in p53: one 18-bp duplication in exon 5, five point mutations in exon 4, three point mutations in exon 7, two point mutations in exon 8, and a splice-site mutation at the exon 6/intron 7 boundary. In contrast to previous studies of malignant glioma, the prevalence of transversion mutations (56%) was higher than transition mutations (33%). A large proportion of transversion mutations occurred in exon 4, a region that is not routinely screened in gliomas. We present here an improved method for screening exon 4 (and other GC-rich regions) of p53 using PCR-single-strand conformation analysis. The high frequency of transversion mutations suggests a role for exogenous carcinogens in the etiology of malignant glioma.

Abstract
CONTEXT Previous studies of BRCA1 mutation prevalence have been based on high-risk groups, yielding estimates that do not reflect the experience of the general population of US patients with breast cancer. OBJECTIVE To determine prevalence of known disease-related mutations and other variants in BRCA1 and how it differs by race, age at diagnosis, and family history status in a population-based sample of white and black patients with breast cancer unselected for family history. DESIGN Case-control study. SETTING A 24-county area of central and eastern North Carolina. PARTICIPANTS Cases were women aged 20 to 74 years diagnosed as having a first invasive breast cancer between May 1993 and June 1996. Controls were frequency matched to cases by 5-year age range and race. The first 211 cases and 188 controls regardless of race and the subsequent 99 cases and 108 controls of African American ancestry are included in this report. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE Germline variants at any site in the coding sequence, splice junctions, 5' untranslated region, or 3' untranslated region of the BRCA1 gene were analyzed in cases, and selected variants were analyzed in controls. Screening was performed using multiplex single-strand conformation analysis, with all potential variants confirmed using genomic sequencing. RESULTS Three of 211 patients with breast cancer had disease-related variants at BRCA1, all of which were protein-truncating mutations. After adjustment for sampling probabilities, the proportion of patients with breast cancer with disease-related variants was 3.3% (95% confidence interval, 0%-7.2%) in white women and 0% in black women. Young age at diagnosis alone did not predict BRCA1 carrier status in this population. In white women, prevalence of inherited mutation was 23% for cases with family history of ovarian cancer, 13% for cases from families with at least 4 cases of breast cancer with or without ovarian cancer, and 33% for cases from families with both breast and ovarian cancer and at least 4 affected relatives. Because these results are based on few families at the highest levels of risk, confidence intervals around these estimates are wide. An additional 5 patients had rare missense mutations or a single amino acid deletion, the biological significance of which is unknown. In black women, a variant in the 3' untranslated region was statistically significantly more common in cases than in controls. CONCLUSIONS These data suggest that in the general US population, widespread screening of BRCA1 is not warranted. In contrast, BRCA1 mutations are sufficiently frequent in families with both breast and ovarian cancer, or at least 4 cases of breast cancer (at any age), that genotyping might be considered. The emerging picture of BRCA1 population genetics involves complex interactions of family history, age, and genetic ancestry, all of which should be taken into account when considering testing or interpreting results.

Abstract
There is a growing body of evidence supporting the roles of small, dense LDL and plasma triglyceride (TG), both features of the atherogenic lipoprotein phenotype, as risk factors for coronary heart disease. Although family studies and twin studies have demonstrated genetic influences on these risk factors, the specific genes involved remain to be determined definitively. The purpose of this study was to investigate genetic linkage between LDL size, TG, and related atherogenic lipoproteins and candidate genes known to be involved in lipid metabolism. The linkage analysis was based on a sample of 126 DZ women twin pairs, which avoids the potentially confounding effects of both age and gender, by use of a quantitative sib-pair linkage-analysis approach. Eight candidate genes were examined, including those for microsomal TG-transfer protein (MTP), hepatic lipase, hormone-sensitive lipase, apolipoprotein (apo) B, apo CIII, apo E, insulin receptor, and LDL receptor. The analysis suggested genetic linkage between markers for the apo B gene and LDL size, plasma levels of TG, of HDL cholesterol, and of apo B, all features of the atherogenic lipoprotein phenotype. Furthermore, evidence for linkage was maintained when the analysis was limited to women with a major LDL-subclass diameter >255 A, indicating that the apo B gene may influence LDL heterogeneity in the intermediate-to-large size range. In addition, linkage was found between the MTP gene and TG, among all the women. These findings add to the growing evidence for genetic influences on the atherogenic lipoprotein phenotype and its role in genetic susceptibility to atherosclerosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Most blood donor deferrals are temporary and short-term. The effect of short-term, temporary deferral (STTD) on blood donor return rates and subsequent blood donations is an important issue. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS Donors given STTDs during the first 3 months of 1993 were computer-matched with nondeferred donors on the basis of age, sex, and donation date. Computer records were evaluated during the next 4.25 years (4/93-6/97) to determine donor return rates and subsequent blood donations. RESULTS The most common reasons STTD were low hemoglobin (46%), colds and/or sore throats (19%), and elevated temperature (10%). Nondeferred donors were 29 percent more likely than donors with STTD to return over the next 4.25 years (80% vs. 62%), and nondeferred donors donated 81 percent more whole blood units (13,798 vs. 7,615) over the same period. CONCLUSION The study showed that STTD have a very negative impact on blood donor return rates and subsequent blood donations. Actions to alleviate these negative effects are indicated.

Abstract
Disease associations of human T lymphotropic virus types I and II (HTLV-I and -II) infection were studied in 154 HTLV-I-infected, 387 HTLV-II-infected, and 799 uninfected blood donors. Adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 99% confidence intervals (CIs) were derived from logistic regression models controlling for demographics and relevant confounders. All subjects were human immunodeficiency virus type 1-seronegative. HTLV-II was significantly associated with a history of pneumonia (OR, 2.6; 99% CI, 1.2-5.3), minor fungal infection (OR, 2.9; 99% CI, 1.2-7.1), and bladder or kidney infection (OR, 1.6; 99% CI, 1.0-2.5) within the past 5 years and with a lifetime history of tuberculosis (OR, 3.9; 99% CI, 1.3-11.6) and arthritis (OR, 1.8; 99% CI, 1.2-2.9). Lymphadenopathy (> or =1 cm) was associated with both HTLV-I (OR, 6.6; 99% CI, 2.2-19.2) and HTLV-II (OR, 2.8; 99% CI, 1.1-7.1) infection, although no case of adult T cell leukemia/lymphoma was diagnosed. Urinary urgency and gait disturbance were associated with both viruses. This new finding of increased prevalence of a variety of infections in HTLV-II-positive donors suggests immunologic impairment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The hypothesis that informal jobs, which imply absence of formal labour contracts, instability and the absence of fringe benefits, are positively associated with psychiatric symptoms was evaluated in a poor urban area of Brazil. METHODS With data from a cross-sectional study, the association between informal jobs and high number of psychological symptoms was estimated. The study population was composed of 327 women randomly selected from a community in the city of Salvador, Brazil. Women who reported having a job without a formal contract were classified as informal workers. Psychological symptoms were collected through a validated questionnaire, the QMPA. RESULTS A positive association between informal work and a high number of psychological symptoms was found (crude prevalence ratio = 1.88, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.24-2.85). More than 4 hours of housework a day and being a family head were confounders, although adjustment for these variables did not significantly change the results (adjusted prevalence ratio = 1.97, 95% CI: 1.26-3.09). CONCLUSIONS These findings are suggestive that informal work may be a risk for mental symptoms. Reinforcement of universal labour rights coverage and improvement in housework sharing are recommended.
