Background/Introduction: Pathophysiology of aortic stenosis (AS) and several previous studies suggested the potential role of angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) in patients with AS.

Purpose

We aimed to investigate the effects of Fimasartan, an ARB, on exercise capacity and progression of AS in patients with moderate to severe AS.

Methods

We conducted a prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in 32 normotensive or controlled-hypertensive patients with moderate or severe AS. Study participants were randomized to Fimasartan 30 mg to 60 mg daily (n = 14) or placebo (n = 18) for 1 year, and underwent cardiopulmonary exercise test, 6-minute walk test, and echocardiography at 0, 6, and 12 months, with follow-up data available in 29 subjects.

Results

Significant reductions in blood pressures were observed in the Fimasartan group but not in the placebo group. Two of the 14 patients in the Fimasartan group withdrew the study due to mild symptoms probably related with the decreased blood pressure, and one patient decline the study protocol. After the 12-month treatment, the peak oxygen consumption (VO2; the primary outcome) in the Fimasartan group was significantly decreased (from 28.3 ± 5.9 to 25.4 ± 3.8 mL/min/kg, P = 0.021) but not in the placebo group (P for interaction = 0.046) (Figure 1A). The severity of AS showed a gradual progression in both groups, without inter-group differences (mean transaortic pressure; Fimasartan group, +4.0 ± 3.8 mmHg/year; placebo group, +5.3 ± 6.2 mmHg/year; P for interaction = 0.429) (Figure 1B). Parameters of left ventricular systolic and diastolic function did not change in both groups.

Conclusions

The use of ARB impaired exercise capacity in patients with moderate or severe AS, and did not prevent the progression of AS. However, due to the small number of participants, further studies are required to confirm these findings.

Mitochondrial DNA content and oxidation in bipolar disorder and its role across brain regions

The underlying pathology of bipolar disorder remains unknown, though evidence is accumulating to support a role of mitochondrial dysfunction. In this study, we aim to investigate electron transport chain complex I subunit NDUFS7 protein expression; mtDNA content; common deletion; and oxidation in the Broadmann area 24 (BA24), cerebellum, hippocampus, and prefrontal cortex from patients with bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and non-psychiatric controls. Here, we demonstrate no changes in NDUFS7 in BA24, cerebellum or hippocampus, increases in mtDNA content in hippocampus of patients with bipolar disorder, and decreases in mtDNA oxidation in patients with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, respectively. Paired analysis between BA24 and cerebellum reveal increases within NDUFS7 levels and mtDNA content in cerebellum of patients with bipolar disorder or schizophrenia. We found a positive correlation between NDUFS7 and mtDNA content (ND4 and ND5) when combining brain regions. Our study supports the involvement of mitochondrial dysfunction in bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

Comparison of the Efficacy and Phytotoxicity of Phosphine and Ethyl Formate for Controlling Pseudococcus longispinus (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) and Pseudococcus orchidicola on Imported Foliage Nursery Plants

The fumigation activity of phosphine (PH3) and ethyl formate (EF) and their phytotoxicity to 13 imported foliage nursery plant species were evaluated. The lethal concentration and time (LCT99) values of the PH3 indicated that the susceptibility of the nymphs (3.95 and <0.45 mg·h/liter, respectively) was higher than that of the adults (5.29 and 3.66 mg·h/liter, respectively) of two mealybugs [Pseudococcus longispinus (Targioni-Tozzetti) and P. orchidicola Takahashi]. The highest concentration reduction rate of PH3 and EF on the 13 foliage nursery plants in the 12-liter desiccator was 41.5% for Heteropanax fragrans and 71.7% for Schefflera arboricola, respectively, which indicates that PH3 has a lower sorption rate than EF. The phytotoxicities of PH3-treated foliage nursery plants did not significantly differ from those of the nontreated plants, but EF caused phytotoxicity in 11 foliage nursery plants a week after treatment. When the exposure time of PH3 increased to 24 h, the adults and nymphs of both mealybug species showed 100% mortality in the 0.5 m3 fumigation chamber. In the 10 m3 fumigation container used in the field, there was 100% mortality of both mealybugs after treatment with 2 g/m3 PH3 for 24 h at 16°C. These results indicate that EF is not a suitable mealybug fumigant due to its high sorption and phytotoxicity to foliage nursery plants, despite fumigation activity against the two species. However, PH3 seems to be suitable for mealybug fumigation in foliage nursery plants and can be used as a substitute for methyl bromide.

Prevalence of fentanyl exposure and knowledge regarding the risk of its use among emergency department patients with active opioid use history at an urban medical center in Baltimore, Maryland

Background: Overdose deaths from fentanyl and its analogs have increased significantly since 2013. There are limited data regarding the prevalence of fentanyl exposure among emergency department (ED) patients with active opioid use.Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study at an urban hospital from May 20 to July 30, 2018. A convenience sample of adult ED patients with active opioid use, defined as opioid use within seven days prior to ED visit, were enrolled. Rapid Response^® Single Drug Test Strip (BTNX Inc., Markham, Canada) was used to detect fentanyl in urine samples. Information on demographic, substance use history, and knowledge of fentanyl was obtained using a brief survey tool. Our primary outcome was the prevalence of fentanyl exposure; secondary outcomes included patients' knowledge regarding potency, risk of overdose death from fentanyl and intentional purchase of fentanyl.Results: During our study period, 451 patients reported active substance use. Of these, 208 reported active opioid use and 165 consented for the study. The median age was 49 years [interquartile range: 38, 57] and 77.0% (n = 127) were male; 42 participants (25.5%) presented to ED after an acute overdose event. Heroin was the preferred opioid of use in 90.8% of the participants, primarily via intranasal route (64.6%). Polysubstance use was reported in 98.8%, most commonly with cocaine (57.6%; n = 95). Fentanyl was detected in 104 out of 129 urine samples tested (80.6%). 84.2% (n = 139) identified fentanyl as highly potent and 85.5% (n = 141) recognized highest risk of death in fentanyl overdose. A larger proportion of non-overdose participants intentionally purchased fentanyl (34.1%; n = 42) compared to the overdose group (16.7%, n = 7; p = .04).Conclusions: The majority of ED patient with active opiate use were exposed to fentanyl while one in three participants intentionally purchased fentanyl despite their awareness of its potency and the high-risk of death from overdose.

Activation of Factor XII and Kallikrein-Kinin System Combined with Neutrophil Extracellular Trap Formation in Diabetic Retinopathy

BACKGROUND

In diabetic retinopathy (DR), neutrophil extracellular traps (NET) and kallikrein-kinin system are considered as contributing factors. However, the detail activation mechanisms has not been fully understood. Since the NET could provide negative-charged surface for factor XII activation and the activated factor XII (XIIa) can initiate kallikrein-kinin system, this study investigated whether patients with DR show activation of NET, factor XII and kallikrein-kinin system.

METHODS

The markers related to NET (DNA-histone complex) and kallikrein-kinin system (high-molecular-weight kininogen, prekallikrein, bradykinin) and factor XIIa were measured in 253 patients with diabetes. To access ex vivo effect of glucose, DNA-histone complex and factor XIIa were measured in whole blood stimulated by glucose.

RESULTS

The circulating level of DNA-histone complex and factor XIIa were significantly higher in patients with DR than those without DR. In logistic regression analysis, DNA-histone complex, factor XIIa, and high-molecular-weight kininogen were the risk factors of DR. In recursive partitioning analysis, among patients with diabetes duration less than 10 years, patients with high level of DNA-histone complex (>426 AU) showed high risk of DR. In ex vivo experiment, glucose significantly elevated both DNA-histone complex and factor XIIa.

CONCLUSION

Our findings suggest that activation of factor XII and kallikrein-kinin system combined with NET formation actively occur in patients with DR and circulating levels of DNA-histone complex, factor XIIa and HMWK can be potential biomarkers to estimate the risk of DR. Strategies against factor XII activation may be beneficial to inhibit DR.

Gamma-Ray Irradiation Control of Whiteflies Bemisia tabaci (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) and Trialeurodes vaporariorum in the Exportation of Fresh Strawberries

Whitefly pests, including the sweetpotato whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius), and the greenhouse whitefly, Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood), are economically important in agriculture. With the annual growth of the domestic fresh fruit export market, various quarantine treatment methods are being used to export strawberries of better quality. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effects of gamma rays on the development and reproductive sterility of B. tabaci and T. vaporariorum. In both species, the eggs were completely inhibited from hatching at 50 Gy, and the emergence of third-instar nymphs was completely suppressed at 150 Gy. Some adult B. tabaci and T. vaporariorum spawning occurred at 100 and 70 Gy, respectively; however, at these irradiation levels, F1 hatchability was completely inhibited. Dosimetry results showed that the penetrating power of gamma ray in the strawberry-filled box was the lowest at the mid-box position. Therefore, B. tabaci and T. vaporariorum were placed in the middle of the strawberry-filled box and irradiated. A gamma-ray irradiation of 100 Gy suppressed the development and reproduction of eggs and adults in both B. tabaci and T. vaporariorum. Our data suggest that at least 100 Gy should be used for the control of these two species of whitefly for strawberry export.

Thrombotic Risk of Non-Criteria Anti-Phospholipid Antibodies Measured by Line Immunoassay: Superiority of Anti-Phosphatidylserine and Anti-Phosphatidic Acid Antibodies

BACKGROUND

Increasing interest has focused on the development of new assays more specific for APS and application of multiple combinations of anti-phospholipid antibodies (aPLs). This study explored the thrombotic risk of non-criteria aPLs measured by a new line immunoassay (LIA) and the benefit of additional non-criteria aPLs results to the APS diagnosis.

METHODS

LIA were performed to detect 9 aPLs in 180 patients requested for lupus anticoagulant (LA) measurement. Antibodies against anti-cardiolipin (CL), β2 glycoprotein I (GPI), and β2GPI domain I were measured by ELISA.

RESULTS

The agreement percentages for IgG/IgM anti-CL and anti-β2GPI between ELISA and LIA (anti-CL 68.2% and 82.6%; anti-β2GPI 71.7% and 93.2%, respectively). Among 9 aPLs measured by LIA, single presence IgG of anti-phosphatidylserine (odds ratio (OR) 16.477) and anti-phosphatidic acid (OR 9.625) predicted higher thrombotic risk than anti-β2GPI (OR 5.538). Other aPLs measured by LIA (anti-prothrombin, anti-annexin V, anti-phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylethanolamine, and anti-phosphatidylglycerol) did not show any significant thrombotic risk. Addition of the 2 non-criteria aPLs (anti-phosphatidylserine and anti-phosphatidic acid) to the established APS criteria increased the diagnostic specificity and accuracy for thrombosis. The positive rates of anti-β2GPI and anti-phosphatidylserine measured by LIA were quite high in patients with positive anti-β2GPI domain I.

CONCLUSIONS

The anti-phosphatidylserine and anti-phosphatidic acid among non-criteria aPLs have a high likeli-hood as new markers for thrombotic prediction.

Contact System Activation and Neutrophil Extracellular Trap Markers: Risk Factors for Portal Vein Thrombosis in Patients With Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Although portal vein thrombosis (PVT) commonly occurs in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the hypercoagulability mechanism in patients with HCC is not entirely clear. Recently, tumor-induced formation of neutrophil extracellular traps (NET) has been shown to trigger contact system activation, and contact system activation has been shown to be a new mechanism of thrombosis. Therefore, we investigated whether contact system activation and NET formation occurred in relation to PVT in HCC patients. The circulating levels of NET formation markers (DNA-histone complex, double-stranded DNA, neutrophil elastase) and contact system activation markers (factor XIIa and high-molecular-weight kininogen) were measured in 177 patients who had been diagnosed with HCC and 48 healthy controls. Presence of PVT was confirmed in 77 HCC patients. The levels of NET formation and contact system activation markers were significantly higher in patients than in healthy controls and they increased significantly with the increase in the model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) scores. Of note, these markers were significantly higher in HCC patients with PVT than in those without PVT. These NET formation markers and the contact system activation markers were significant thrombotic risk factors in HCC patients. The well-known liver injury markers (alanine transaminase, prothrombin time) significantly contributed to factor XIIa level. Contact system activation and NET formation are well correlated with liver disease severity and the markers of these can be used as thrombotic risk factors in HCC patients. In addition, therapeutics inhibiting the contact system can be potentially used to manage PVT in HCC patients.

Suppression of Hepatic Lipogenesis and Enhancement of β-oxidation in Skeletal Muscle by Betulinic Acid Lead to the Reduction of Body Adiposity and Dyslipidemia in Mice (P21-043-19)

Objectives

Betulinic acid (BA) exists as a lipophilic conformation in nature, rich in fruits and vegetables, especially the bark of birch wood. Beneficial effects of BA on cancer, oxidative stress, and inflammation were previously reported. Studies of BA for anti-obesity and dyslipidemia have been recently emerged, however the outcomes are still not conclusive. We tested if BA improves obesity and/or dyslipidemia by incorporated mechanism of liver and skeletal muscle in vivo.

Methods

Five-week-old male C57BL/6 mice were fed Western type diet (45% kcal from fat with 1.25% cholesterol) ad libitum for 12 weeks. Mice were allocated into five groups: (−) control, BA 5 mg/kg, BA 15 mg/kg, BA 25 mg/kg, and fenofibrate as a (+) control. BA was orally administered every day. For proved phenotype alteration, we analyzed mRNA and protein expressions linked to lipogenesis and β-oxidation.

Results

Growth performance including final body weight, weight gain, and feed intake were not altered by BA. Body fat mass was decreased by all BA treated groups (P < 0.01) without changes of lean mass. Energy expenditure contributed by β-oxidation was increased by BA 25 (P < 0.001). Serum lipid profiles including triglyceride, free fatty acid, total cholesterol, and LDL cholesterol were significantly improved by all BA treated groups (P < 0.001). Lipid accumulation in the liver was reduced by BA 15 and 25 (all P < 0.001). The mRNA expressions of Acc1and Scd1were dose-dependently suppressed by betulinic acid in liver (P < 0.05). SREBP1 was diminished by BA treated groups (all P < 0.05). FAS showed reduced tendency by BA (P = 0.06). In protein levels, ACC1 and SCD1 were inhibited by BA treated groups (P < 0.001 and P < 0.05). FAS and SREBP1 tended to be reduced by BA (P = 0.40 and P = 0.70). LPL and CPT1, β-oxidation markers in skeletal muscle, were activated by BA 25 (P < 0.001 and P < 0.01). The activation of CPT1 was influenced by stimulating of AMPK-pT172 and ACC1-pS79 (all P < 0.05). Taken together, BA inhibitedde novolipogenesis in the liver and upregulated key proteins related to β-oxidation in skeletal muscle, contributing to the prevention of obesity and dyslipidemia.

Conclusions

We suggest that BA is a potent nutraceutical for prevention and treatment of chronic metabolic diseases including obesity and dyslipidemia.

Toxicity and effects of essential oils and their components on Dermanyssus gallinae (Acari: Dermanyssidae)

The acaricidal activity of 30 essential oils against the poultry red mite, Dermanyssus gallinae, female adults and behavioral responses of the mites to these essential oils were investigated. Cinnamon bark oil and clove bud oil showed 100% acaricidal activity after 24 h in the 1.3 μg/m² treatment. In addition, four components in cinnamon bark oil and three components in clove bud oil were identified using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Cinnamon bark oil showed the highest LD₅₀ value among all of the components, and eugenol showed 0.97-fold higher relative toxicity (RT) than the other components of clove bud oil. The fumigant effects of both essential oils and their seven components were observed using a vapor phase toxicity bioassay. All the substances showed repellent activity except for cinnamyl acetate, which did not show any repellent response even in the > 10 μg treatment. In the experiment using the T-tube olfactometer with the 10 μg treatment of each substance, D. gallinae female adults responded to all the substances except cinnamyl acetate. However, eugenol and eugenol acetate showed an attractant effect after 240 and 120 min of treatment, respectively. These results suggest that the two studied essential oils and their components may be used as control agents against D. gallinae.

Cancer cell-induced neutrophil extracellular traps promote both hypercoagulability and cancer progression

Introduction

Neutrophils can generate extracellular net-like structures by releasing their DNA–histone complexes and antimicrobial peptides, which is called neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs). Various stimuli can induce NET formation. In particular, neutrophils and NET formation are abundant in tumor tissue. This study investigated how cancer cells induce NET formation and whether this NET formation promotes plasma thrombin generation and cancer progression.

Methods

Induction of NET formation by a pancreatic cancer cell line (AsPC-1) was assessed by measuring the histone–DNA complex level. The endogenous thrombin potential (ETP) was measured by thrombin generation assay. In vitro migration, invasion, and tubule formation assays were performed. The circulating levels of NET markers and hypercoagulability markers were assessed in 62 patients with pancreatobiliary malignancy and 30 healthy controls.

Results

AsPC-1 significantly induced NET formation in a dose-dependent manner. Conditioned medium (CM) from AsPC-1 also induced NETs. Interestingly, NET-formation was abolished by heat-inactivated CM, but not by lipid-extracted CM, suggesting an important role of protein components. A reactive oxygen species inhibitor did not inhibit cancer cell–induced NET formation, but prostaglandin E1 (PGE1, cyclic adenosine monophosphate inducer) and antithrombin did. NETs significantly increased ETP of normal plasma. Of note, NETs promoted cancer cell migration and invasion as well as angiogenesis, which were inhibited by histone-binding agents (heparin, polysialic acid), a DNA-degrading enzyme, and Toll-like receptor neutralizing antibodies. In patients with pancreatobiliary malignancy, elevated NET markers correlated well with hypercoagulability makers.

Conclusion

Our findings indicate that cancer cell–induced NET formation enhances both hypercoagulability and cancer progression and suggest that inhibitors of NET formation such as PGE1 and antithrombin can be potential therapeutics to reduce both hypercoagulability and cancer progression.

Acequinocyl Resistance Associated With I256V and N321S Mutations in the Two-Spotted Spider Mite (Acari: Tetranychidae)

The two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae), is one of the most important pest species, because it devastates many horticultural and ornamental crops and fruit trees. In the present study, we explored a field strain that was collected in January 2001 and then selected for 16 years for acequinocyl resistance. The resistance ratios calculated for the LC50 value in the laboratory-selected acequinocyl-resistant (LSAR16) strain was 4,237-fold higher than that of the susceptible strain. Pretreatment with the synergists piperonyl butoxide and S,S,S-tributyl-phosphorotrithioate significantly increased the toxicity of acequinocyl to the LSAR16 strain. Crossing experiments revealed that the resistance in the LSAR16 strain was maternally inherited, dominant, and monogenic. Furthermore, among individuals in the LSAR16 strain, 85.5-98.5% had the I256V mutation and 98-99% had the N321S mutation in mitochondrial cytochrome b. These results suggest that these two new point mutations contribute to acequinocyl resistance in T. urticae.

Switching from traditional sodium channel blockers to lacosamide in patients with epilepsy

PURPOSE

Lacosamide (LCM) is a recently developed sodium channel blocker (SCB), which acts mainly on the slow activation state in sodium channels. Although LCM shares a range of dose-dependent adverse effects with traditional SCBs, it has several advantages in that it does not induce hepatic drug metabolizing enzymes and has less risk of drug interactions and idiosyncratic adverse effects.

METHODS

We retrospectively analyzed the efficacy and tolerability of switching from traditional SCBs to LCM. The reason for the switch was classified as insufficient efficacy, adverse effects, or concern about metabolic derangement, resulting in conditions such as atherosclerosis and osteoporosis, with long-term use of traditional SCBs.

RESULTS

Seventy-five patients were switched to LCM from traditional SCBs. The overall rate of successful switching was high (81.3%, 61/75 patients). However, the success rate was strongly dependent on the reason for the switch; patients with insufficient efficacy on SCBs had less chance of a successful switch (71.8%, 28/39 patients) than those with adverse effects (89.5%, 17/19) or concerns about metabolic derangement (94.1%, 16/17, p =  0.038). Patients with insufficient efficacy were significantly younger (p =  0.004) and had a higher chance of drug-resistant epilepsy (p =  0.004) than those in the other two groups.

CONCLUSIONS

Our study shows that switching from traditional SCBs to LCM is usually successful and the likelihood of a successful switch is higher in patients when the reason for the switch is adverse effects or concerns about metabolic derangement on traditional SCBs.

Efficacy and Phytotoxicity of Phosphine as Fumigants for Frankliniella occidentalis (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) on Asparagus

The insecticidal activity of phosphine (PH3) and ethyl formate (EF) toward Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) and their phytotoxicity to asparagus were evaluated. Both the PH3 and EF fumigants showed higher lethal concentration and time (LCT) values at lower temperatures. The LCT99 values of PH3 and EF at 5°C in a 12 liters desiccator for 4 h showed the following ranking: eggs (64.69 mg·h/liter for PH3 and EF indicating phytotoxicity to asparagus), nymphs (5.54 and 17.48 mg·h/liter, respectively), and adults (3.83 and 14.67 mg·h/liter, respectively). The adsorption of PH3 was approximately 11% at 2°C and 13% at 5°C, whereas the adsorption of EF increased sharply to 88% at 2°C and 97% at 5°C. The hatching rate of F. occidentalis eggs was approximately 95% at all locations (top, middle, and bottom) in the presence of 4 mg/liter PH3 at 5°C in a 0.65-m3 fumigation chamber for 24 h. However, extension of the treatment to 48 h resulted in 100% inhibition of egg hatching. The atmospheric level of PH3 decreased below the threshold limit value after 80 min, and phytotoxicity was not observed. The results revealed that EF is highly absorbed by asparagus and is not suitable as a fumigant, but PH3 is a suitable alternative to the fumigant methyl bromide for the control of western flower thrips in asparagus.

Increased plasma viscosity in plasma cell dyscrasia and whole blood viscosity in polycythemia vera

BACKGROUND

Although hyperviscosity syndrome in plasma cell dyscrasia (PCD) and thrombosis in myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN) are major causes of morbidity and mortality, blood viscosity measurements are often underutilized.

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to characterize whether whole blood viscosity (WBV) or plasma viscosity (PV) could be predictive of hyperviscosity syndrome in PCD and could be elevated in subgroups of MPN.

METHODS

A total of 75 patients with hematologic diseases: PCD (n = 26), MPN (n = 25) including polycythemia vera (P. vera) and lymphoma (n = 24) were enrolled along with 104 healthy controls. Both WBV and PV were measured using a capillary tube viscometer. Hyperviscosity syndrome was defined as having 2 or more hyperviscosity symptoms.

RESULTS

Patients with PCD showed significantly higher PVs at high and low shear rates when compared to healthy controls, especially in those with hyperviscosity syndrome. The sensitivity and specificity of WBV and PV in detecting hyperviscosity syndrome were 28.6% and 94.1%, and 71.4% and 66.7%, respectively. Patients with P. vera exhibited high WBV and RBC counts compared to healthy controls.

CONCLUSION

PV is predictive of hyperviscosity syndrome in PCD and WBV is elevated in patients with P. vera. It suggests that hemorheologic disturbances exist in patients with PCD and MPN and that tests of viscosity may be helpful in detecting hemorheological disturbances.

The Impact of Alcohol Use on Antiretroviral Therapy Adherence in Koreans Living with HIV

PURPOSE

This study aimed to examine the impact of alcohol use on the antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence of Koreans living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

METHODS

A total of 144 HIV-infected Koreans older than the age of 19 years who had been receiving antiretroviral drugs for at least 3 months were surveyed. Alcohol use was identified as nonhazardous, binge, hazardous, and alcohol dependent as determined by the Alchol Use Disorder Identification Test-Korea (AUDIT-K). ART adherence was defined according to the components of adherence motivation, adherence knowledge, and 95% medication adherence using the modified Morisky scale. Collected data were analyzed using logistic regression analysis for each component of therapy adherence.

RESULTS

Of all participants, 13.9% were binge drinkers, 17.4% were hazardous drinkers, and 4.2% were alcohol dependent. For low adherence motivation, the odds ratio for the hazardous drinkers was 7.47 [95% confidence interval (CI): 1.72-32.41; p = .007] and for the alcohol dependent, it was 12.61 (95% CI: 1.38-115.38; p = .025) when compared with the nonhazardous drinkers. For medication adherence under 95%, the odds ratio for binge drinkers was 4.65 (95% CI: 1.15-18.92; p = .032), for hazardous drinkers was 8.05 (95% CI: 2.08-31.20; p = .003), and for the alcohol dependent was 27.67 (95% CI: 2.12-360.51; p = .011).

CONCLUSION

It is recommended that Korean institutions and governments develop specific mediation and counseling programs that include alcohol use-related monitoring for the improvement of the ART adherence of people living with HIV.

Reliability and Validity of the Korean Version of the Coping and Adaptation Processing Scale-Short-Form in Cancer Patients

PURPOSE

This study was conducted to assess the reliability and validity of the Korean version of the Coping and Adaptation Processing Scale-Short-Form in patients with cancer.

METHODS

The original scale was translated into Korean using Brislin's translation model. The Korean Short-Form and the Functional Assessment Cancer Therapy-General were administered to 164 Korean patients with cancer using convenience sampling method. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 23.0 and AMOS 23.0. Construct validity, criterion validity, test-retest reliability, and internal consistency reliability of the Korean Coping and Adaptation Processing Scale-Short-Form were evaluated.

RESULTS

Exploratory factor analysis supported the construct validity with a four-factor solution that explained 60.6% of the total variance. Factor loadings of the 15 items on the four subscales ranged .52~.86. The four-subscale model was validated by confirmatory factor analysis (Normed χ²=1.38 (p =.013), GFI=.92, SRMR=.02, RMSEA=.05, TLI=.94, and CFI=.95), and criterion validity was demonstrated with the Functional Assessment Cancer Therapy-General. Cronbach's alpha for internal consistency of the total scale was .83 and ranged .68~.81 for all subscales, demonstrating sufficient test-retest reliability.

CONCLUSION

The Korean version showed satisfactory construct and criterion validity, as well as internal consistency and test-retest reliability.

Effects of the Methyl Group on the Emission Efficiency of the Red Phosphorescent Iridium(III) Complexes for OLEDs

Novel red phosphorescent iridium(III) complexes, namely (MN-Q)2Ir(tmd), (MN-MQ)2Ir(tmd), (PT-P)2Ir(tmd) and (PT-MP)2Ir(tmd) were synthesized for the red phosphorescent organic lightemitting diodes (phOLEDs). The ligands have sites of both the electron donor and acceptor in a molecule. The main ligands were synthesized by the Suzuki coupling reaction, and comprised an electron donor and an electron acceptor group. Subsequently, the iridium(III) complexes were synthesized by the Nonoyama reaction and their photochemical luminescence properties were investigated by ultraviolet-visible and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The manufactured devices were characterized by current density-voltage-luminance, power efficiency, external quantum efficiency, as well as their electroluminescence spectra. Finally, the effects of the trifluoromethyl group on the emission efficiency of the organic light-emitting diodes were investigated by comparing the energy levels and luminescence efficiency of the three iridium complexes.

Fumigation Activity of Ethyl Formate and Phosphine Against Tetranychus urticae (Acari: Tetranychidae) on Imported Sweet Pumpkin

This study investigated an alternative fumigant for imported sweet pumpkin. Laboratory fumigations with ethyl formate (EF) and phosphine (PH3) alone and in combination were conducted at different temperatures in 12-liter desiccators to determine their efficacy and synergism against adults and eggs of two-spotted spider mites (Tetranychus urticae Koch), a major pest of sweet pumpkins; larger scale fumigations with EF were also performed to evaluate the impact of EF fumigation on the postharvest quality of sweet pumpkin and EF absorption. EF fumigation of 4 h achieved 100% control of both adults and eggs at 10°C. Efficacy of EF also increased with temperature. Conversely, PH3 fumigation for 4 and 6 h was not effective against either adults or eggs, and no synergism between EF and PH3 was observed. In larger scale fumigation tests, EF at 60 g/m3 for 4 h resulted in 100% control of both adults and eggs at 10°C, without causing injury to the sweet pumpkins. These results suggest that EF has the potential to be a safe and effective alternative to methyl bromide fumigation for controlling two-spotted spider mites on sweet pumpkin.
