Global socioeconomic impact of cystic echinococcosis

Because the human and economic losses of cystic echinococcosis are substantial, global prevention and control measures should be increased.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is an emerging zoonotic parasitic disease throughout the world. Human incidence and livestock prevalence data of CE were gathered from published literature and the Office International des Epizooties databases. Disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) and monetary losses, resulting from human and livestock CE, were calculated from recorded human and livestock cases. Alternative values, assuming substantial underreporting, are also reported. When no underreporting is assumed, the estimated human burden of disease is 285,407 (95% confidence interval [CI], 218,515–366,133) DALYs or an annual loss of US $193,529,740 (95% CI, $171,567,331–$217,773,513). When underreporting is accounted for, this amount rises to 1,009,662 (95% CI, 862,119–1,175,654) DALYs or US $763,980,979 (95% CI, $676,048,731–$857,982,275). An annual livestock production loss of at least US $141,605,195 (95% CI, $101,011,553–$183,422,465) and possibly up to US $2,190,132,464 (95% CI, $1,572,373,055–$2,951,409,989) is also estimated. This initial valuation demonstrates the necessity for increased monitoring and global control of CE.

Infection of calves with Theileria annulata in Tunisia: Economic analysis and evaluation of the potential benefit of vaccination

A field study aiming to estimate the costs of tropical theileriosis was carried out in an endemic region of the North of Tunisia. Three farms were monitored for two successive summer seasons. A total number of 56 calves and 12 sentinel cows were monitored. Calves were ranked into four groups: non infected animals, diseased animals with clinical tropical theileriosis, sub-clinical Theileria annulata infected animals with anaemia and sub-clinical T. annulata infected animals without anaemia. The total costs due to disease and infection were estimated to be 15,115.058 TD (Euro 9388.20). A high proportion of these costs (50.81%) is accounted for by asymptomatic infection. Sub-clinical infections with anaemia showed the highest losses in live weight, while disease cases (prevalence 42.86%) are responsible for 23.64% of the losses with death as the most important element. A cost-benefit analysis of vaccination using a Tunisian attenuated cell line vaccine was also undertaken. Considering that the vaccine would cost 5 TD (Euro 3.10), the cost-benefit ratio of vaccination is 23.7. Sensitivity analysis of the vaccination costs shows that the indifference decision point is around 118 TD (Euro 73.29).

Pro and contra IBR-eradication

Bovine herpesvirus type 1 (BoHV-1) is the causative agent of respiratory and genital tract infections such as infectious rhinotracheitis (IBR), infectious pustular vulvovaginitis (IPV, balanoposthitis (IBP), and abortion. Despite of a pronounced immune response, the virus is never eliminated from an infected host but establishes life-long latency and may be reactivated at intervals. Europe has a long history of fighting against BoHV-1 infections, yet, only a small number of countries has achieved IBR-eradication. Therefore, it seemed appropriate to review the reasoning pro and contra such a task. Clearly, the goal can indeed be achieved as has been demonstrated by a number of European countries. However, detection and stamping out of seemingly healthy virus carriers is inevitable in the process. Unfortunately, the use of vaccines is only of temporary and limited value. Therefore, there are numerous considerations to be put forward against such plans, including the high costs, the great risks, and the unsatisfactory quality of tools. If either control or eradication of IBR is nonetheless a goal, then better vaccines are needed as well as better companion tests. Moreover, better tools for the characterization of viral isolates are required. Collaborative actions to gather viral strains from as many countries as possible for inclusion into a newly created clustering library would be most advantageous.

[The importance of Mycoplasma bovis in bovine respiratory disease]

The annual damage caused by bovine respiratory disease is estimated at 45 up to 55 euro per calf of milking cattle and 117.50 euro per veal calf In Europe, M. bovis is responsible for at least 1/4 to 1/3 of all pneumonia cases in calves. Serology may help to identify the spreading of these bacteria in a herd.

Economic impact of reduced milk production associated with Johne's disease on dairy operations in the USA

Accurately assessing the economic impacts of diseases and other factors that affect milk production requires that the demand for milk be taken into account. Because demand for milk in the USA is relatively inelastic (i.e., consumers generally purchase a somewhat fixed amount over a given time frame, regardless of fluctuations in price), consumers tend to reap much of the benefit of enhanced production. An examination of the economic impacts of Johne's disease indicated that reduced milk production, associated with the determination of dairy operations as Johne's-positive, reduced consumer surplus by 770 million dollars+/- 690 million dollars, and resulted in a total loss of 200 million dollars+/- 160 million dollars to the US economy in 1996. Most of the economic surplus lost by consumers was transferred to producers, whose economic surplus increased by 570 million dollars+/- 550 million dollars as a result of the reduced milk production associated with Johne's disease. Uncertainty analysis showed that the estimated reduction in milk production on Johne's-positive dairy operations accounted for most of the uncertainty in the economic-impact estimates. If Johne's disease had not been present on US dairy operations, then an additional 580 million+/-460 million kg of milk would have been produced, but the price would have fallen by 1.1+/-1.0 cents/kg, and the total value of the milk would have decreased by 580 million dollars+/- 560 million dollars.

[Cost-utility analysis of surgical obstetrics in cattle with torsio uteri intra partum]

This study presents a cost-utility analysis concerning profitability of surgical obstetrics in bovines with torsio uteri intra partum. The calculations are based on 43 surgical treated cows and their postoperative outcome. Cows with torsio uteri intra partum which can not be treated conservatively are mostly, until the end of the follwing lactation period, a loss for the owner/farmer of the animal. The total loss of untreated - euthanized patients is almost 1000 euro (mainly expenses for the replacement of animals) whereas the loss of surgical treated animals, including calculated risks, is on an average 200 euro variing from -452 euro to +28 euro. The calculations presented in this study show, that the surgical treatment of conservatively incorrectable uterine torsion intra partum pays.

Economic impacts of reduced milk production associated with epidemiological risk factors for Johne's disease on dairy operations in the USA

An examination of the economic effects of epidemiologic risk factors for Johne's disease identified regional and herd size differences as having the greatest impact. Having dairy cows that were not born on the operation was the most important factor over which individual producers had the most immediate control. Economic consequences associated with using multiple-cow-maternity housing and multiple-preweaned-calf housing were not statistically significant. Economic welfare analysis was applied, and the GUM Workbench was used to analyse uncertainties in the estimates of the economic impacts.

Effects of a Novel Pesticide Resistance Management Strategy on Tick Control in a Smallholding Exotic-breed Dairy Herd in Kenya

Effects of a novel pesticide resistance management strategy on tick control are evaluated in this study. The study is based on a temporal analysis of tick management practices on a smallholding in western Kenya. Results are reported of an innovation to tackle individual resistance in a pair of alternative pesticides using relay application. Incidence of tick-borne diseases at the farm were reduced from 79.6% per annum to 4.5% and no cases were observed in the last two years of the study. Negative cross-resistance is believed to be the mechanism in play for this effective tick control practice. Tick-borne disease control and management costs were halved in comparison to application of a single ineffective pesticide at the same treatment frequency. The acaricide relay strategy is suitable for smallholdings and is expected to significantly extend the useful lifespan of the pesticide pair.

Estimating the financial losses due to bovine fasciolosis in Switzerland

In dairy cattle in Switzerland, the prevalence of infection with Fasciola hepatica is over 16 per cent. Previous studies have suggested that even subclinical infections with liver fluke may induce significant reductions in the performance of cattle. The financial losses attributable to F hepatica were estimated using a simple spreadsheet model to sum the individual losses that have been suggested in the literature. Because there is substantial variability in these production losses, Monte Carlo sampling techniques were used to model this variability. Each cost item and each data item related to the prevalence of F hepatica was assigned a mathematical distribution which took account of the variability of the experimental data and/or the sample size of the data. A total of 10,000 simulations were undertaken, with each item randomly varied through its mathematical distribution on each simulation. The results suggest that the median financial loss due to bovine fasciolosis in Switzerland is approximately 52 million, with probable 95 per cent confidence limits ranging from 22 million to 92 million per annum, which represents a median loss of 299 per infected animal. Most of the losses arise from reduced milk yield and reduced fertility, and smaller losses are due to reduced meat production and the condemnation of livers.

Financial incentive to control paratuberculosis (Johne's disease) on dairy farms in the United Kingdom

This paper estimates the financial incentive to control paratuberculosis on dairy farms by establishing the level of expenditure that would minimise the total cost of the disease (output losses plus control expenditure). Given the late onset of the clinical signs and the lack of treatments, control was focused on minimising the financial impact of paratuberculosis by adjusting the dairy cow replacement policy. The optimum replacement policies for disease-free herds and infected herds were compared by using dynamic programming. At the standard settings, the disease justified adjusting the culling policy; under constant bioeconomic assumptions, it reduced the expected annuity from milk production under the optimal replacement policy by about 10 per cent (27 pounds sterling per cow annually), a considerably lower figure than for other major endemic diseases that affect dairy cows in the uk. The effect was even less at lower milk prices, suggesting that there is at present little incentive for dairy farmers to put more resources into controlling the disease. However, the incentive could be increased if more information were available about how best to manage the disease under specific farm circumstances. Any effect that paratuberculosis may have on the future demand for milk and hence on milk prices would also be an important consideration.

Economic analysis of feeding pasteurized nonsaleable milk versus conventional milk replacer to dairy calves

OBJECTIVE

To determine growth, morbidity, and mortality rates in dairy calves fed pasteurized nonsaleable milk versus commercial milk replacer and compare economics of feeding pasteurized nonsaleable milk versus commercial milk replacer in dairy calves.

DESIGN

Clinical trial.

ANIMALS

438 dairy calves.

PROCEDURE

Calves were assigned at 1 to 2 days of age to be fed pasteurized nonsaleable milk or a commercial milk replacer until weaned. Body weight was measured at the time of study enrollment and at the time of weaning, and any medical treatments administered and deaths that occurred prior to weaning were recorded. A partial budget model was developed to examine the economics of feeding pasteurized nonsaleable milk versus commercial milk replacer.

RESULTS

Calves fed conventional milk replacer had significantly lower rates of gain (-0.12 kg/d [-0.26 lb/d]), lower weaning weights (-5.6 kg [-12.3 lb]), higher risk for treatment during the summer and winter months (odds ratio [OR], 3.99), and higher risk of death during the winter months (OR, 29.81) than did calves fed pasteurized nonsaleable milk. The estimated savings of feeding pasteurized nonsaleable milk, compared with milk replacer, was dollars 0.69/calf per day. The estimated number of calves needed to economically justify the nonsaleable milk pasteurization system was 23 calves/d.

CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE

Results suggest that dairy calves fed pasteurized nonsaleable milk have a higher growth rate and lower morbidity and mortality rates than do calves fed conventional milk replacer. Feeding pasteurized nonsaleable milk could be an economically viable strategy for dairy calf producers.

Risk factors and the economic impact of ovarian cysts on reproductive performance of dairy cows in Korea

The objectives of this study were to determine the risk factors for development of postpartum ovarian cysts by evaluating several reproductive factors in individual cows, and to determine the economic impact of ovarian cysts on subsequent reproductive performance in dairy herds in Korea. The data, including cow parity, abnormal puerperium, endometritis, body condition score (BCS), and breeding status were collected from 634 cows in 9 dairy herds. We used logistic regression to evaluate the effects of these factors on ovarian cysts. A stepwise procedure, used to obtain the appropriate model with alpha=0.05, revealed that cow parity was the most important risk factor for ovarian cyst development within 8 weeks postpartum, while development of endometritis and BCS loss>or=1 from the dry period to 8 weeks postpartum were the most important risk factors for ovarian cyst development beyond 8 weeks postpartum. The occurrence of ovarian cysts beyond 8 weeks postpartum prolonged (P<0.01) the mean intervals from calving to first service (27 days) and conception (77 days), and increased (P<0.05) the culling rate (7.8%), while ovarian cyst development within 8 weeks postpartum did not affect (P>0.05) the mean intervals from calving to first service and conception or the culling rate. The economic loss resulting from the occurrence of ovarian cysts was estimated at approximately 823,996 won ($687) due to effects on the cost of nutrition, average growth of calves, labor and medical costs, and culling. These results suggest that cow parity is correlated with the development of ovarian cysts within 8 weeks postpartum, and endometritis and BCS loss>or=1 from the dry period to 8 weeks postpartum are correlated with the development of ovarian cysts after 8 weeks postpartum, which decreases reproductive performance and results in economic loss in dairy herds in Korea.

[Epidemiological investigations of bovine Chorioptes mange in Germany]

Chorioptic mange in cattle has long been recognised as a common external parasitosis in livestock. In order to evaluate the economic importance of Chorioptes bovis-mange, the seasonal prevalence in several types of husbandry in the states of Germany, location of clinical skin symptoms, procedure of diagnosis, influence on milk or meat production, and treatment especially in dairy farming, 1190 German large animal practicioners have been asked by questionnaires from which 367 responded. This paper gives an update on important epidemiological investigations on bovine chorioptic mange due to this inquiry. Since more than one third of the questioned veterinarians see tail mange often, it is of high importance for farm cattle. Chorioptes mange mainly occurs in dairy cattle stocks, and has especially negative effects on milk production and meat productivity. For treatment of this external parasitosis mainly macrocyclic lactons and pyrethroids are used.

Use of partial budgeting to determine the economic benefits of antibiotic treatment of chronic subclinical mastitis caused by Streptococcus uberis or Streptococcus dysgalactiae

The economic effect of lactational antibiotic treatment of chronic subclinical intramammary infections due to Streptococcus uberis or Streptococcus dysgalactiae was explored by means of partial budgeting. Effects at cow level and herd level were modelled, including prevention of clinical mastitis episodes and the prevention of transmission of infections. Input variables for our deterministic model were derived from literature or based on 2002/2003 dairy prices and farming conditions in The Netherlands. Sensitivity analysis was used to examine the effect of uncertainty around input variables or changes in price estimates. On farms where pathogen transmission was prevented through proper udder health management, 3-d antibiotic treatment during lactation resulted in an average net profit of €+11·62 over no treatment while 8-d antibiotic treatment had an average negative net result of €−21·83. Sensitivity analysis showed that profitability depends on the probability of treatment-induced cure, pathogen transmission rates, culling rate, retention pay-off, and costs of antibiotic treatment. Three-day antibiotic treatment of chronic subclinical streptococcal mastitis is economically profitable over a range of input values for cure probabilities, transmission rates and losses due to culling. In contrast, 8-d lactational treatment is only profitable for very valuable animals, on farms where the risk of pathogen transmission is high and/or when the farmer is likely to cull a high percentage of cows with subclinical mastitis. Because bacterial flora, cow characteristics and management differ widely between farms, the economic outcome of lactational treatment of chronic subclinical streptococcal mastitis may be highly farm-dependent.

A deterministic and stochastic simulation model for intra-herd paratuberculosis transmission

In France, the considerable economic losses due to paratuberculosis introduction in cattle herds may justify the development of a herd-level certification procedure. For a cost/benefit analysis purpose, a simple deterministic and stochastic simulation model for intra-herd paratuberculosis transmission has been developed to evaluate the economic consequences of the purchase of a single infected heifer in a French average herd. The values of the epidemiological parameters were provided by a panel of French paratuberculosis experts. The results were in adequacy with field observations. A sensitivity analysis was conducted. The model was however difficult to validate rigorously, since few data on the intra-herd paratuberculosis true prevalence level are currently available.

A cost/benefit study of paratuberculosis certification in French cattle herds

Paratuberculosis has received increasing attention in France because of the important losses this disease may provoke. The use of certification schemes has proven its effectiveness for the protection of healthy herds against diseases transmitted mainly by trade. The economic justification of such schemes in the particular case of paratuberculosis is studied, for French cattle herds, using a cost/benefit approach. The basic economical hypotheses and estimates have been proposed and carefully examined by a working group composed of paratuberculosis experts and field specialists. By adopting the point of view of a breeder that buys animals, we first estimated the benefits resulting from the non-introduction of the disease. They were then compared with the costs resulting from the fact that the vendor reports its own certification costs on the price of the animals he sells. Two average herds (the mean French beef herd and the mean French dairy herd), and two certification levels were studied. The results show that, currently, the use of the certification is not very economically profitable in French cattle herds. This conclusion, however should be reappraised if the certification costs decrease, for example with the commercialization of diagnostic tests on mixtures.

Simulation of alternatives for the Dutch Johne's disease certification-and-monitoring program

To identify optimal method(s) for certification and subsequent monitoring of Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (Map)-unsuspected herds, certification-and-monitoring schemes were studied using a stochastic simulation model ("JohneSSim"). JohneSSim simulated the within-herd transmission and economic aspects of Map in closed Dutch dairy herds. The model was validated with field observations on Map-unsuspected herds. The current Dutch certification-and-monitoring schemes were compared with 11 alternative schemes in which individual and pooled fecal culture, ELISA, Johnin-intradermal test and gamma-IFN ELISA were used, varying the test frequency, tested age group and number of tested animals. On reaching the 'Map-free' status with the standard certification scheme, 11% of the simulated herds were not truly Map-free. Therefore, the designation 'Map-free' should be changed into, for instance, 'low-risk Map'. In the most-attractive alternative certification scheme, the 'Map-free' status was reached after four herd examinations (at 2-year intervals) consisting of serial testing of all cattle > or = 2 years of age with a pooled fecal culture and individual fecal culture of positive pools. This scheme resulted in lower total and annual discounted costs and a lower animal-level prevalence at reaching the 'Map-free' status compared to the standard scheme, assuming that there was no new introduction of the infection. Schemes to monitor the 'Map-free' status were compared, assuming that this status was reached with the standard certification scheme. In comparison to the standard monitoring scheme, none of the alternative monitoring schemes resulted in both a lower animal-level prevalence of undetected pre-existing Map infections in closed herds, and lower median annual discounted costs. Results of the model were very sensitive to the assumed sensitivity of the fecal culture test and to management measures that prevent within-herd transmission of Map. If these preventive measures were taken, the probability of undetected Map infections in closed 'Map-free' herds was decreased substantially.

Development of a simulation model to evaluate the effect of vaccination against Tritrichomonas foetus on reproductive efficiency in beef herds

OBJECTIVE

To develop a model to evaluate the effect of vaccination against Tritrichomonas foetus on reproductive efficiency in beef herds.

SAMPLE POPULATION

A beef herd of 300 cows and 12 bulls (8 bulls < or = 3 years old and 4 bulls > 3 years old).

PROCEDURE

The model was developed by use of data for various risk factors and vaccine efficacy. The reference herd was considered to be one in which T. foetus had been diagnosed and bulls were tested for T. foetus before the breeding season. Five thousand iterations were run for each of 13 simulations, with each simulation representing a separate combination of risk factors.

RESULTS

In all simulations, vaccination resulted in significantly higher calving incidence than nonvaccination. Shared grazing was found to be the most significant risk factor for a decrease in calving incidence attributable to T. foetus infection, followed in importance by lack of testing before the breeding season and a higher proportion of old bulls. Combinations of risk factors contributed to a loss of income of up to 22%, some of which could be blunted by vaccination.

CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE

Highest calving incidence is achieved when all bulls are tested for T. foetus before the breeding season and all bulls with positive culture results are culled. Avoiding all risk factors is better than vaccinating, but when this is not feasible for a given herd, the results of this simulation indicate that proper vaccination can decrease economic losses attributable to abortions caused by T. foetus.

Economic considerations for diagnostic and control options forNeospora caninum-induced abortions in endemically infected herds of beef cattle

OBJECTIVE

To compare economic outcome for herds not exposed to Neospora caninum with that for herds with various seroprevalences of N caninum infection and evaluate 3 control strategies.

DESIGN

Economic simulation model.

PROCEDURE

A 5-year simulation model was used. Control strategies that were evaluated included culling females that fail to calve, selling seropositive females and purchasing seronegative replacements, and excluding the daughters of seropositive dams as potential replacements.

RESULTS

For a 5-year period with low prices for feeder calves, endemic N caninum infection decreased mean return to fixed assets by 22.2% when true seroprevalence was 10% and by 29.9% when true seroprevalence was 70%. Percentage decrease in return to fixed assets was less dramatic when a 5-year period with high prices for feeder calves was evaluated. Analysis indicated that 2 control strategies (culling females that fail to give birth to a calf and selling seropositive female cattle and purchasing seronegative replacement female cattle) were not likely to be economically beneficial. The third control strategy (testing the entire herd for N caninum infection and excluding the female offspring of seropositive dams as replacements) appeared to be a reasonable control strategy.

CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE

For the assumptions in the model, endemic N caninum infection decreases return to fixed assets for cow-calf herds. Of the potential control strategies evaluated, testing the entire herd for N caninum infection and excluding the daughters of seropositive dams as potential replacements provided the best economic return.)

Vaccination in the control strategy of bluetongue in Italy

The incursion of bluetongue (BT) in Italy, in August 2000, caused heavy economic losses, partly due to the direct effect of the disease on the animals, but mostly due to indirect losses due to ruminant movement restrictions conducive to heavy losses to the cattle and sheep industry. To limit losses due to both disease and virus circulation, which was the cause of movement restrictions, the Italian Ministry of Health in May 2001 ordered the vaccination of animals of all domestic ruminant species in infected and "at risk" areas. The vaccination strategy derived from a risk assessment that suggested that the vaccination of all domestic ruminants could reduce both direct losses and virus circulation significantly. The different levels of vaccination coverage, achieved in the various regions of Italy, had clear consequences on the spread of both disease and infection. In regions where more than 80% of the target populations were vaccinated properly, the disease disappeared almost completely and virus circulation was significantly reduced, as documented by the serological surveillance system, after a single vaccination cycle. This led to a significant decrease in the areas subject to movement restrictions. Data generated by both field and controlled experiments contributed to modify the EU approach to BT and to some of the conclusions of the Third OIE International Symposium on Bluetongue that will probably lead to a modification of the Office International des Epizooties (OIE) standard.

Economic consequences of control programs for paratuberculosis in midsize dairy farms in the United States

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the epidemiologic efficacy and economic efficiency of current and potential future control programs for paratuberculosis (Johne's disease) on midsize dairy herds in the United States.

DESIGN

Stochastic dynamic computer simulation model.

SAMPLE POPULATION

Data on prices and other input variables collected from various sources were used to represent a population of midsize US dairy herds infected with paratuberculosis.

PROCEDURE

The simulation model was modified to reflect management and production characteristics of midsize dairy herds in the United States. The model was validated by use of field data and expert opinion. Various control strategies then were simulated and compared on an epidemiologic basis and on the basis of economic efficiency.

RESULTS

Test-and-cull strategies and vaccination against paratuberculosis were not able to decrease the mean prevalence of disease in the United States. Typically, only vaccination was economically attractive. Improved management strategies decreased the prevalence of paratuberculosis considerably and had high economic benefits.

CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE

Analysis of results of this study suggests that test-and-cull strategies alone do not reduce the prevalence of paratuberculosis in cattle and are costly for producers to pursue. Vaccination did not reduce the prevalence but was economically attractive. Finally, improved calf-hygiene strategies were found to be critically important in every paratuberculosis control program and most were economically attractive programs for midsize US dairy farms with the disease.

Benefit-cost analysis of vaccination and preemptive slaughter as a means of eradicating foot-and-mouth disease

OBJECTIVE

To assess relative costs and benefits of vaccination and preemptive herd slaughter to control transmission of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) virus (FMDV).

SAMPLE POPULATION

2,238 herds and 5 sale yards located in Fresno, Kings, and Tulare counties of California.

PROCEDURE

Direct costs associated with indemnity, slaughter, cleaning and disinfecting livestock premises, and vaccination were compared for various eradication strategies. Additional cost, total program cost, net benefit, and benefit-cost value (B/C) for each supplemental strategy were estimated, based in part on results of published model simulations for FMD. Sensitivity analyses were conducted.

RESULTS

Mean herd indemnity payments were estimated to be dollars 2.6 million and dollars 110,359 for dairy and nondairy herds, respectively. Cost to clean and disinfect livestock premises ranged from dollars 18,062 to dollars 60,205. Mean vaccination cost was dollars 2,960/herd. Total eradication cost ranged from dollars 61 million to dollars 551 million. All supplemental strategies involving use of vaccination were economically efficient (B/C range, 5.0 to 10.1) and feasible, whereas supplemental strategies involving use of slaughter programs were not economically efficient (B-C, 0.05 to 0.8) or feasible.

CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE

Vaccination with a highly efficacious vaccine may be a cost-effective strategy for control of FMD if vaccinated animals are not subsequently slaughtered and there is no future adverse economic impact, such as trade restrictions. Although less preferable than the baseline eradication program, selective slaughter of highest-risk herds was preferable to other preemptive slaughter strategies. However, indirect costs can be expected to contribute substantially more than direct costs to the total cost of eradication programs.

A comprehensive review of ceftiofur sodium and hydrochloride formulations for treatment of acute bovine foot rot

Seven well-controlled studies conducted under multiple management conditions demonstrated that ceftiofur, a late-generation veterinary parenteral cephalosporin, is effective for the treatment of bovine foot rot in beef and dairy cattle. Two preliminary dosage titration studies using a challenge model compared the efficacy of ceftiofur (1.1 mg or 2.2 mg ceftiofur equivalents [CE]/kg administered once daily for 3 days) with placebo. One preliminary clinical study evaluated the efficacy of ceftiofur sodium (1.0 mg CE/kg once daily for 3 days) in lactating dairy cows. Two clinical trials evaluated the efficacy of ceftiofur sodium versus placebo for naturally occurring foot rot, and two trials compared the efficacy of ceftiofur sodium or hydrochloride (1.0 mg CE/kg) with oxytetracycline (6.6 or 10 mg/kg), each administered once daily for 3 days, for treatment of acute foot rot in beef cattle. All trials demonstrated the efficacy of ceftiofur for treatment of acute bovine foot rot. Ceftiofur and oxytetracycline were comparable in efficacy, with ceftiofur having excellent injection-site tolerance and short or no milk discard or preslaughter withdrawal.
