Abstract
We herein report an unusual case of Brodie's abscess of the radius in a child. A 13-year-old boy presented with pain on his right distal forearm. A plain radiograph showed an 8 cm translucent lesion in the distal radius. MRI showed a penumbra sign on the T1-weighted image, hyperintensity on T2-weighted images, and ring enhancement on the contrast-enhanced T1 image. 18F-FDG PET/CT images showed an uptake at the margin of the radius. Curettage and iliac cancellous bone grafting were undertaken for Brodie's abscess. Bacteriological examinations were found to be negative, however, the pathologic diagnosis showed chronic osteomyelitis. Eight months after surgery, the patient was asymptomatic and there was no sign of recurrence of infection. For Brodie's abscess in a child, thorough debridement is mandatory in addition to cancellous bone grafting. Brodie's abscess should be considered in the differential diagnosis of a patient who presents with forearm pain and exhibit the radiolucent osteolytic lesion on simple radiography.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Transplant coronary arterial vasculopathy (TCAV) is a major cause of death after heart transplantation (HTx). Palliative coronary revascularization has been attempted in patients with severe TCAV; however, the outcome has not been fully elucidated. METHODS Ninety-six patients who were treated after HTx at our institute between 1999 and 2015 were screened for TCAV. TCAV was defined as >70% stenosis on coronary angiography (CAG) or a maximal intimal thickness of >0.5 mm in the right or left coronary arteries on intracoronary ultrasonography (IVUS). In the present study, the outcomes of patients with severe TCAV who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) or coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) were investigated. RESULTS TCAV containing donor-transmitted atherosclerosis was cumulatively found in 69 patients (71.9% of the total; mean age, 34.6 ± 13.1 years; 52 men; mean follow-up duration, 83.0 ± 60.4 months). Five (7.2%) and 64 (92.8%) of the 69 patients were diagnosed as having TCAV by use of CAG and IVUS, respectively. All 5 patients diagnosed by with the use of CAG underwent coronary revascularization between 1 and 236 months after HTx. Three patients underwent PCI with drug-eluting stents, with a primary success rate of 100%. No angiographic restenosis occurred in 2 patients at 31 and 36 months after PCI, respectively. Meanwhile, 2 patients underwent CABG. No peri-operative complications occurred, and all grafts were patent as assessed by use of CAG at 34 and 5 months after CABG. CONCLUSIONS Coronary revascularization was feasible and effective for severe TCAV with middle-term follow-up.

Abstract
A distinct thermal Hall signal is observed in a quantum spin liquid candidate Ba_{3}CuSb_{2}O_{9}. The transverse thermal conductivity shows a power-law temperature dependence below 50 K, where a spin gap opens. We suggest that because of the very low longitudinal thermal conductivity and the thermal Hall signals, a phonon Hall effect is induced by strong phonon scattering of orphan Cu^{2+} spins formed in the random domains of the Cu^{2+}-Sb^{5+} dumbbells in Ba_{3}CuSb_{2}O_{9}.

Abstract
In vitro studies have shown that multidrug resistance protein 1 (MDR1) has an affinity for cortisol; however, in vivo association studies on the relationship between MDR1 gene polymorphisms and blood cortisol levels have produced inconsistent results. Therefore, we examined the effects of the C3435T polymorphism of the MDR1 gene on blood levels of hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis hormones such as cortisol and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) in healthy subjects. The subjects comprised 30 healthy Japanese males. Ten subjects were recruited for each of the C3435T MDR1 genotypes: C/C, C/T, and T/T. Blood samples were taken at 6:00 pm on two occasions with an interval of 2 weeks. Blood levels of cortisol and ACTH were determined by an electrochemiluminescence immunoassay. There were no significant differences in the blood levels of the HPA axis hormones among the MDR1 genotypes. The present study suggests that the C3435T MDR1 polymorphism does not affect blood levels of HPA axis hormones in healthy Japanese males.

Abstract
Abstract
Background:
Tumor angiogenesis and hypoxia are associated with breast cancer growth and metastasis. Photoacoustic (PA) tomography is an optical imaging technology that visualizes distribution and oxygenation status of hemoglobin with high spatial resolution. Initially we developed a photoacoustic mammography (PAM) having a flat-shaped scanning detector that could detect breast tumors. Nevertheless, the flat-shaped detector array has the drawback of a limited view. Here we developed a novel PAM system with a hemispherical-shaped detector array (HDA), which enables us to identify microvasculatures non-invasively and allow the collection of nearly spatially isotropic three-dimensional reconstructed image of blood vessels. This non-invasive vascular imaging system may be able to characterize tumor angiogenesis and analyze the status of microcirculation. The aim of this study was to analyze the imaging findings of tumor-related vasculature in breast cancer patients.
Patients and method:
A PAM system with HDA has been generated in a cooperation project between Canon Inc., Japan, and Kyoto University. Twenty-two primary breast cancer patients, including 5 patients with non-invasive cancer and 17 patients with invasive cancer, diagnosed between December 2014 and December 2015 underwent the PAM imaging analysis. We also applied the breast deformation algorithm from the breast shape in a MRI image to that in a PA image in order to create a fusion image of the two modalities for the analysis. Features of peri- and intra-tumoral vasculature, and their oxygenation status were evaluated. The study protocol was approved by the institutional review board at Kyoto University Hospital (UMIN000012251). All patients provided informed consent to participate in this study.
Results:
The abnormal peri-tumoral vasculature was detected in 86% of all non-invasive and invasive disease cases. In invasive cancer cases, most tumor-related blood vessels were centripetally directed toward the tumor, and 93% of centripetal blood vessels appeared to be disrupted or rapidly narrowed at the tumor boundary. The centripetal blood vessel structure was frequently observed in invasive cancer compared with non-invasive cancer (61% vs 35%). PA images before and after preoperative chemotherapy were obtained in one case, where intra-tumoral blood vessels became finer after chemotherapy, reflecting normalization of intra-tumoral microcirculation induced by chemotherapy.
Conclusions:
A PAM system with HDA has provided a high-resolution vascular images of primary breast cancers. The morphological differences of peri-tumoral vasculature were observed between invasive disease and non-invasive disease. These results suggest the potential of PA imaging as a non-invasive tool to analyze tumor vasculature of human breast cancers and maybe be helpful for breast cancer diagnosis.

Abstract
Noninvasive measurement of the distribution and oxygenation state of hemoglobin (Hb) inside the tissue is strongly required to analyze the tumor-associated vasculatures. We developed a photoacoustic imaging (PAI) system with a hemispherical-shaped detector array (HDA). Here, we show that PAI system with HDA revealed finer vasculature, more detailed blood-vessel branching structures, and more detailed morphological vessel characteristics compared with MRI by the use of breast shape deformation of MRI to PAI and their fused image. Morphologically abnormal peritumoral blood vessel features, including centripetal photoacoustic signals and disruption or narrowing of vessel signals, were observed and intratumoral signals were detected by PAI in breast cancer tissues as a result of the clinical study of 22 malignant cases. Interestingly, it was also possible to analyze anticancer treatment-driven changes in vascular morphological features and function, such as improvement of intratumoral blood perfusion and relevant changes in intravascular hemoglobin saturation of oxygen. This clinical study indicated that PAI appears to be a promising tool for noninvasive analysis of human blood vessels and may contribute to improve cancer diagnosis.

Abstract
Plutonium (238Pu and 239,240Pu), 137Cs and plutonium activity ratios (238Pu/239,240Pu) as did uranium isotope ratio (235U/238U) were measured in surface soil samples collected in southeast Mongolia. The 239,240Pu and 137Cs concentrations in Mongolian surface soils (<53 μm of particle size) ranged from 0.42 ± 0.03 to 3.53 ± 0.09 mBq g-1 and from 11.6 ± 0.7 to 102 ± 1 mBq g-1, respectively. The 238Pu/239,240Pu activity ratios in the surface soils (0.013-0.06) coincided with that of global fallout. The 235U/238U atom ratios in the surface soil show the natural one. There was a good correlation between the 239,240Pu and 137Cs concentrations in the surface soils. We introduce the migration depth to have better understanding of migration behaviors of anthropogenic radionuclides in surface soil. We found a difference of the migration behavior between 239,240Pu and 137Cs from 137Cs/239,240Pu - 137Cs plots for the Mongolian and Tsukuba surface soils; plutonium in surface soil is migrated easier than 137Cs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In the vitrification of embryos, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is one of the most effective cryoprotectant agents (CPAs), but cytotoxic effects of DMSO on embryos are well known. Carboxylated poly-L-lysine (CPLL) has been identified as an effective cryoprotectant of cultured cell lines and mammalian oocytes. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the efficacy and safety of CPLL as a CPA for developmental stage embryos. MATERIALS AND METHODS Mouse 8-cell embryos and blastocysts were vitrified with ethylene glycol (EG), DMSO/EG, or CPLL/EG and the developmental potency assessed in vitro. RESULTS In 8-cell embryos, there were no differences between the levels of survival and developmental progress into the blastocyst stage in each solution. At the blastocyst stage, the proportion of dead cells was significantly higher in the EG compared with other solutions. In contrast, there were no differences between the DMSO/EG and CPLL/EG. CONCLUSION These results indicate that CPLL can be used as a replacement for DMSO in the vitrification of mouse embryos.

Abstract
Steatosis is a critical feature of liver disease and is considered to play a pivotal role in the progression of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, as well as being a surrogate marker of metabolic syndrome. The purpose of this study was to develop a non-invasive diagnostic method for assessment of liver steatosis. It is well known that ultrasonic velocity depends on materials and temperature. For example, the ultrasonic velocity in water is 1530m/s at 37°C and 1534m/s at 39°C, while that in fat is 1412m/s at 37°C and 1402m/s at 39°C. On this basis, we thought that the percentage of fat in hepatic steatosis could be assessed by detecting changes of ultrasonic in the liver, caused by warming. In order to confirm the effectiveness of this method, we obtained the ultrasonic velocity changes of tissue phantom including lard oil and the liver of living rabbit by ultrasonic warming, and then succeeded in 2-D imaging of ultrasonic velocity changes of the phantom and the liver of living rabbit. We named this the ultrasonic velocity-change method. The experimental results show the possibility that hepatic steatosis could be characterized using our novel, non-invasive method.

Abstract
Background The field of structural dynamics of cytoskeletons in living cells is gathering wide interest, since better understanding of cytoskeleton intracellular organization will provide us with not only insights into basic cell biology but may also enable development of new strategies in regenerative medicine and cancer therapy, fields in which cytoskeleton-dependent dynamics play a pivotal role. The nanoneedle technology is a powerful tool allowing for intracellular investigations, as it can be directly inserted into live cells by penetrating through the plasma membrane causing minimal damage to cells, under the precise manipulation using atomic force microscope. Modifications of the nanoneedles using antibodies have allowed for accurate mechanical detection of various cytoskeletal components, including actin, microtubules and intermediate filaments. However, successful penetration of the nanoneedle through the plasma membrane has been shown to vary greatly between different cell types and conditions. In an effort to overcome this problem and improve the success rate of nanoneedle insertion into the live cells, we have focused here on the fluidity of the membrane lipid bilayer, which may hinder nanoneedle penetration into the cytosolic environment. Results We aimed to reduce apparent fluidity of the membrane by either increasing the approach velocity or reducing experimental temperatures. Although changes in approach velocity did not have much effect, lowering the temperature was found to greatly improve the detection of unbinding forces, suggesting that alteration in the plasma membrane fluidity led to increase in nanoneedle penetration. Conclusions Operation at a lower temperature of 4 °C greatly improved the success rate of nanoneedle insertion to live cells at an optimized approach velocity, while it did not affect the binding of antibodies immobilized on the nanoneedle to vimentins for mechanical detection. As these experimental parameters can be applied to various cell types, these results may improve the versatility of the nanoneedle technology to other cell lines and platforms. Abstract
The aims of the present study were to examine whether collagen exists in egg, particularly in egg yolk; to establish a Fourier transform-near infrared (FT-NIR) measurement method for collagen in egg and to assess the possibility of increasing the collagen content by feeding hens a diet containing wood charcoal powder containing wood vinegar liquid (WCV). The collagen in eggs from 67-week-old hens fed on the dietary 0 and 9.9 g/kg WCV diets was investigated using a combination of histochemical, matrix-assisted laser desorption ionisation with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and FT-NIR approaches. All approaches used to identify collagen in egg yolk yielded positive results. The collagen in egg yolk measured using colorimetry, collagen in egg yolk, egg white and eggshell membrane using FT-NIR and collagen in egg yolk determined by treating the egg yolk with collagenase were abundant after feeding a dietary WCV (p<0.05). These results suggest that egg yolk contains collagen, that the collagen in egg can be measured using FT-NIR, and that the collagen content of egg yolk can be increased by feeding dietary WCV diets.

Abstract
In trying to clarify the high recurrence rate after removal of small hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), we assessed the postoperative evolution of minute hepatic Lipiodol deposits which had been diagnosed as artifacts on the preoperative Lipiodol-CT. Of 27 patients with solitary HCC less than 5 cm in diameter, 14 had such Lipiodol deposits in the preoperative CT and 9 of them (64%) developed recurrent tumors. On the other hand, 6 of the 13 patients without deposits (46%) suffered recurrence, but in 5 of these 6 patients the HCC was metachronous multicentric. The cumulative survival rate of the non-deposit group was better than that of the deposit group (p < 0.1). The present study suggested that, even in patients with small HCC, minute concomitant tumors invisible by conventional imaging techniques may exist at the time of surgery. Some of these lesions without sufficient tumor vasculature showing a hypervascular blush on angiography appear to retain small, vague Lipiodol deposits.

Abstract
Eleven patients with symptomatic intracranial atherosclerotic stenotic lesions underwent percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA). Seven patients had stenosis in M1 segment of the middle cerebral artery (MCA), two in the cavernous internal carotid artery, one in M2 segment of the MCA and one in the P2 segment of the posterior cerebral artery. Initial successful dilatation (less than 50% residual stenosis) was obtained in nine patients (81.8%). Permanent neurological deficit related to PTA was seen in one patient and transient symptoms were observed in two. Re-stenosis was revealed in two cases (18.2%) in the early follow-up period. All patients with successful dilatation and without re-stenosis never had TIA or stroke after PTA. Intracranial PTA is an effective procedure, but several problems remain to be solved.

Abstract
We report ac susceptibility, specific heat, and neutron scattering measurements on a dipolar-coupled antiferromagnet LiYbF_{4}. For the thermal transition, the order-parameter critical exponent is found to be 0.20(1) and the specific-heat critical exponent -0.25(1). The exponents agree with the 2D XY/h_{4} universality class despite the lack of apparent two-dimensionality in the structure. The order-parameter exponent for the quantum phase transitions is found to be 0.35(1) corresponding to (2+1)D. These results are in line with those found for LiErF_{4} which has the same crystal structure, but largely different T_{N}, crystal field environment and hyperfine interactions. Our results therefore experimentally establish that the dimensional reduction is universal to quantum dipolar antiferromagnets on a distorted diamond lattice.

Abstract
WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE Midazolam (MDZ) is commonly used for sedating critically ill patients. The daily dose required for adequate sedation increases in increments over 100 h after administration. The objectives of this study were to characterize the MDZ pharmacokinetics in critically ill patients and to describe the phenomenon of increasing daily dose by means of population pharmacokinetic analysis. METHODS Data were obtained from 30 patients treated in an intensive care unit. The patients received MDZ intravenously as a combination of bolus and continuous infusion. Serum MDZ concentration was assayed by high-performance liquid chromatography. Population pharmacokinetic analysis was performed using the NONMEM software package. The alteration of clearance unexplained by demographic factors and clinical laboratory data was described as an autoinduction of MDZ clearance using a semi-mechanistic pharmacokinetic-enzyme turnover model. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The final population pharmacokinetic model was a one-compartment model estimated by incorporating a semi-mechanistic pharmacokinetic-enzyme turnover model for clearance, taking autoinduction into account. A significant covariate for MDZ clearance was total bilirubin. An increase in total bilirubin indicated a reduction in MDZ clearance. From simulation using the population pharmacokinetic parameters obtained in this study, MDZ clearance increased 2·3 times compared with pre-induced clearance 100 h after the start of 12·5 mg/h continuous infusion. WHAT IS NEW AND CONCLUSION Autoinduction and total bilirubin were significant predictors of the clearance of MDZ in this population. Step-by-step dosage adjustment using this population pharmacokinetic model may be useful for establishing a MDZ dosage regimen in critically ill patients.
