Inflammatory cells in duct-ligated salivary glands of the cat: a histochemical study

Inflammatory cells were studied in submandibular, sublingual and parotid glands of cat following ductal ligation. Macrophages were seen within the parenchyma and associated with extravasated mucin, and were possibly of importance in removing secretory material. Neutrophils were seen interstitially and within the parenchyma. Eosinophils were involved in an initial inflammatory response in interstitial tissue. Fibrous connective tissue was more apparent.

Histological effects of ductal ligation of salivary glands of the cat

Forty-two submandibular, 32 sublingual and 31 parotid glands have been examined microscopically after ductal ligation avoiding the nerves for periods from 1 day to 1 yr. After an initial increase in size, there was over-all atrophy in all three glands. In the parotid gland the response was uniform and there was progressive atrophy until most of the acini were extremely atrophic. However, in the submandibular and sublingual glands the response was very variable, and although in some glands most of the acini were extremely atrophic, in other glands there was far less atrophy and most of the remaining acini appeared more or less similar to normal despite prolonged ligation. These results contrast with those of earlier experimental studies on ductal ligation, but have similarities with observations on the behaviour of human salivary glands.

Experimental salivary mucoceles in cat. A histochemical study

Ductal ligation of the sublingual gland induced mucocele formation in a high percentage of cats. Extravasated mucus was associated with all sublingual glands up to 20 days after ligation, and extravasation mucoceles were associated with 12 out of 27 sublingual glands between 7 and 365 days after ligation. Enzyme-histochemic examination revealed that the extravasated mucus induced a migration of macrophages and a fibroblastic reaction. It is thought that if these reactions are sufficiently intense in the early days after ligation, then continued spread of extravasated mucus and mucocele formation does not occur; however, if the extravasation is too great to be contained, a mucocele forms in which a balance develops between extravasation of mucus and its removal. Possibly the numerous macrophages in the mucoceles are involved in degrading mucus and facilitating its removal.

A qualitative and quantitative electronmicroscopic study of the structure of the adenoid cystic carcinoma of human minor salivary glands

The fine structural characteristics of five adenoid cystic carcinomas of human minor salivary galnds and a quantitative assessment of the relative volumes occupied by morphologically defined cell types in these tumors are reported. We observed that the cyst-like spaces which give the characteristic cribriform pattern to the adenoid cystic carcinoma contain replicated basement membrane-like materail. Material comprisimg aggregates of fine tubules having a median diameter of 270 A, and rounded, electron dense bodies were noted within duct-like lumena of one tumor. In addition, dilatation of the intercellular spaces and squamous metaplasia were noted. From 500 electronmicrographs obtained by standardized techniques and used for the morphological part of the study, 175 were selected by a random sampling method and analyzed by the stereological technique of point counting. This method demonstrated that duct type cells occupied 75% by volume of the tumor in these glands; myoepithelial cells occupied 3%, acinar cells occupied 2%, and other tissues occupied 22% of the tumors. These proportions differ significantly (P less than 0.001) from our previously published figures for normal specimens of these glands.

Hyperglycemia in the NZB/NZW F1 hybrid mouse

Both the NZW and NZB mice exhibit an elevated fasting blood sugar level when compared to Swiss white mice. The NZB/NZW F1 hybrid mouse shows still a higher fasting serum glucose level than either of its parental strains. The elevated glucose level is noted very early in the animals' life, long before definitive signs or symptoms of pathology are evident, and remains elevated at least until the fortieth week of life, the last testing period in our series before sacrificing the aminals. There are two major peaking periods for the glucose levels, namely at 4-10 weeks of age and then again at 31-40 weeks of age. These age periods correspond to the very young animal and to the animal that is beyond its prime and most likely sick and near the end of its lifespan due to the animals' inherent disease processes. The NZB and NZB/NZW F1 hybrid succumb to their disease processes at approximately 8-10 months of age. The NZW usually lives until 18 months. The questions are raised: does the altered immunologic state in the NZB and/or the NZB/NZW F1 hybrid produce the elevated blood sugar levels and the pancreatic histopathology or is it the early hyperglycemic condition coupled with pancreatic pathology which are in some measure instrumental in producing the lesions discussed and observed, in the beginning of the three to four month period of age, in the various organs? Is there a relationship between the hyperglycemic condition and the immune state or are these independent phenomena in a genetically "mixed up" mouse?

Sialocele (ranula) simulating oral papillomatosis in a domestic (Oryctolagus) rabbit

A sialocele originating in the duct of the sublingual salivary gland near its opening, close to the lingual frenulum, was observed as a naturally-occurring lesion in a laboratory rabbit. The lesion was assumed during necropsy dissection to be an oral papilloma. Microscopic examination of histologic sections revealed the lesion to have the characteristics of a sialocele (ranula).

Hyponatremia and hypernatremia effects on salivary glands of the rat

A sodium chloride-deficient diet and a control diet were supplemented with different amounts of sodium chloride and fed to rats. The effects of these treatments over different experimental periods were observed on salivary glandular tissue by gross and histological methods. Weight, reversible and irreversible histologic changes, and sialolithiasis are reported.

Chronic suppurative lung disease in sisters mimicking cystic fibrosis

Two sisters are described with fatal chronic obstructive lung disease of unknown origin. The lung condition was clinically and histologically indistinguishable from cystic fibrosis and the salivary glands showed pathological changes expected in cystic fibrosis. Neither child had abnormal sweat electrolytes, they had no bowel symptoms, and the pancreas was normal at necropsy.
