[The effect of anti-inflammatory substances on free muscle transplants in the experimental animal (author's transl)]

The effect of repeated subcutaneous injections of hydrocortisone and phenylbutazone on connective tissue formation was investigated in free rat muscle transplants. The follow-up investigation took place 4 weeks after transplantation of the long extensor muscles of the digits to the vastus lateralis group of the rectus femoris muscle. Connective tissue measurements were performed on the basis of hydroxyproline determinations. It was observed that in the untreated transplant there is twice as much connective tissue (expressed as a percentage) as in the same muscle remaining in situ. Hydrocortisone did not reduce the amount of connective tissue in the transplant. Phenylbutazone reduced the amount of connective tissue by 27%. At the same time the total weight of the transplants treated with hydrocortisone and phynylbutazone was reduced by 15% and 33% respectively. Attention is drawn to the myotoxic properties of hydrocortisone and phenylbutazone. Hence, in spite of the inhibited connective tissue formation there is no improvement in muscle fibre regeneration and their use cannot be recommended.

[Heterologous fibrinogen for tissue adhesion. immunological and histological investigations (author's transl)]

The immunological reactions of heterologous fibrin were investigated in a sensitive experimental system. In 10 rabbits autologous full-thickness skin grafts were glued with bovine fibrinogen cryoprecipitate. 5 of these animals had been immunized against this adhesive before transplantation. In a control group the graft was fixed with homologous fibrinogen cryoprecipitate. Examination of the sera of the animals for antibodies against fibrinogen was performed before immunization, 1 day prior to and 14 days after skin grafting. 14 days after skin adhesion all grafted areas were examined by histological methods. In the group without preoperative immunization antibodies were found against fibrinogen. The skin graft healed in this series in the same manner as in the sham group. In the series with preoperative immunization the glued skin graft was discharged early and the healing procedure of the defect was retarded.

[Investigation of the relation between extracellular excretion of glycollate and the photosynthetic CO2-uptake in the blue-green alga Anacystis nidulans]

The formations of transients in CO2 exchange in the blue-green alga Anacystic nidulans is dependent on the temperature used during the measurements. The algae were grown in a low light intensity (4000 lux) under normal air conditions and measured in the same low CO2 concentration (0.03 vol. %) but under a higher light intensity (10 000 lux). At a temperature of +20°C the stationary rate of CO2 uptake was reached directly. At a temperature of +35°C, on the other hand, a maximum of CO2 uptake could be observed at the beginning of the light period followed by a steady rate of photosynthesis, which was higher than at +20°C. In the beginning of the dark period a CO2 outburst appeared at 35°C.Only at a low temperature (+20°C) did we find a light induced glycollate excretion; after a maximum at 7 1/2 minutes illumination the release of glycollate ceases and the level decreases to a lower value. A similar time course exists during illumination in red light (621 nm, 1.5·10(-8) einsteins) and a temperature of +20°C. In blue light (432 nm, 1,5·10(-8) einsteins, +20°C) and in white light at a high temperature (+35°C) we could not find any light induced glycollate excretion. Our results are discussed in reference to the photorespiration. We explain the formation of transients in CO2 uptake of Anacystis at a high temperature (+35°C) and in blue light (+20°C) on the basis of the influence of photorespiration.
