Abstract
Heteroleptic metal-organic cages, formed through integrative self-assembly of ligand mixtures, are highly attractive as reduced symmetry supramolecular hosts. Ensuring high-fidelity, non-statistical self-assembly, however, presents a significant challenge in molecular engineering due to the inherent difficulty in predicting thermodynamic energy landscapes. In this work, two conceptual strategies are described that circumvent this issue, using ligand design strategies to access structurally sophisticated metal-organic hosts. Using these approaches, it was possible to realise cavity environments described by two inequivalent, unsymmetrical ligand frameworks, representing a significant step forward in the construction of highly anisotropic confined spaces.

Abstract
Pd-based molecular square Pd4 L4 and triangle Pd3 L3 represent the molecular ancestors of metal-coordination polyhedra that have been an integral part of the field for the last 30 years. Conventional solution-based reactions between cis-protected Pd ions and 2,2'-bipyridine exclusively give Pd4 L4 and/or Pd3 L3 as the sole products. We herein show that, under solvent-free mechanochemical conditions, the self-assembly energy landscape can be thermodynamically manipulated to form an elusive cyclic dimer Pd2 L2 for the first time. In the absence of solvent, Pd2 L2 is indefinitely stable in the solid-state, but converts rapidly to its thermodynamic products Pd3 L3 and Pd4 L4 in solution, confirming Pd2 L2 as a short-lived kinetic species in the solution-based self-assembly process. Our results highlight how mechanochemistry grants access to a vastly different chemical space than available under conventional solution conditions. This provides a unique opportunity to isolate elusive species in self-assembly processes that are too reactive to both "see" and "capture".

Abstract
The utilization of photocatalytic techniques for achieving light-to-fuel conversion is a promising way to ease the shortage of energy and degradation of the ecological environment. Fluorescent metallacycles and metallacages have drawn considerable attention and have been used in widespread fields due to easy preparation and their abundant functionality including photocatalysis. This review covers recent advances in photocatalysis in discrete supramolecular fluorescent metallacycles and metallacages. The developments in the utilization of the metallacycles skeletons and the effect of fluorescence-resonance energy transfer for photocatalysis are discussed. Furthermore, the use of the ligands decorated by organic chromophores or redox metal sites in metallacages as photocatalysts and their ability to encapsulate appropriate catalytic cofactors for photocatalysis are summarized. For the sake of brevity, macrocycles and cages with inorganic coordination complexes such as ruthenium complexes and iridium complexes are not included in this minireview.

Abstract
Unsymmetrical ditopic ligands can self-assemble into reduced-symmetry Pd2 L4 metallo-cages with anisotropic cavities, with implications for high specificity and affinity guest-binding. Mixtures of cage isomers can form, however, resulting in undesirable system heterogeneity. It is paramount to be able to design components that preferentially form a single isomer. Previous data suggested that computational methods could predict with reasonable accuracy whether unsymmetrical ligands would preferentially self-assemble into single cage isomers under constraints of geometrical mismatch. We successfully apply a collaborative computational and experimental workflow to mitigate costly trial-and-error synthetic approaches. Our rapid computational workflow constructs unsymmetrical ligands and their Pd2 L4 cage isomers, ranking the likelihood for exclusively forming cis-Pd2 L4 assemblies. From this narrowed search space, we successfully synthesised four new, low-symmetry, cis-Pd2 L4 cages.

Abstract
Although many impressive metallo-supramolecular architectures have been reported, they tend towards high symmetry structures and avoid extraneous functionality to ensure high fidelity in the self-assembly process. This minimalist approach, however, limits the range of accessible structures and thus their potential applications. Herein is described the synthesis of a family of ditopic ligands wherein the ligand scaffolds are both low symmetry and incorporate exohedral functional moieties. Key to this design is the use of CuI -catalysed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) chemistry, as the triazole is capable of acting as both a coordinating heterocycle and a tether between the ligand framework and functional unit simultaneously. A common precursor was used to generate ligands with various functionalities, allowing control of electronic properties whilst maintaining the core structure of the resultant cis-Pd2 L4 nanocage assemblies. The isostructural nature of the scaffold frameworks enabled formation of combinatorial libraries from the self-assembly of ligand mixtures, generating a statistical mixture of multi-functional, low symmetry architectures.

Abstract
The metallosupramolecular chemistry of two enantiopure dicarboxylate ligands has been explored for their potential to form discrete or polymeric interlocked motifs. Consequently, both discrete and polymeric supramolecular complexes have been synthesised, yielding M2 L2 metallomacrocycles (1 and 2), a heteroleptic M2 L3 metallomacrobicycle (3), a non-interpenetrated coordination polymer (4), and highly unusual chiral M8 L8 squares (5 and 6). There appears to be a preference for the ligands to form M2 L2 -type metallomacrocyclic structural units (which feature in 1-4), although these do not engage in any mechanical interlocking, which is perhaps a combined function of the ligand flexibility and relatively small pi-surface contrasted to previous analogues. Using copper paddlewheel SBUs, chiral double-walled squares (5 and 6) are formed with large internal cavities yet poor stabilities, unexpectedly featuring the paddlewheel motifs at the vertices of the polygonal complex.

Abstract
Metal-driven self-assembly is one of the most effective approaches to lucidly design a large range of discrete 2D and 3D coordination architectures/complexes. Palladium(II)-based self-assembled coordination architectures are usually prepared by using suitable metal components, in either a partially protected form (PdL') or typical form (Pd; charges are not shown), and designed ligand components. The self-assembled molecules prepared by using a metal component and only one type of bi- or polydentate ligand (L) can be classified in the homoleptic series of complexes. On the other hand, the less explored heteroleptic series of complexes are obtained by using a metal component and at least two different types of non-chelating bi- or polydentate ligands (such as La and Lb ). Methods that allow the controlled generation of single, discrete heteroleptic complexes are less understood. A survey of palladium(II)-based self-assembled coordination cages that are heteroleptic has been made. This review article illustrates a systematic collection of such architectures and credible justification of their formation, along with reported functional aspects of the complexes. The collected heteroleptic assemblies are classified here into three sections: 1) [(PdL')m (La )x (Lb )y ]-type complexes, in which the denticity of La and Lb is equal; 2) [(PdL')m (La )x (Lb )y ]-type complexes, in which the denticity of La and Lb is different; and 3) [Pdm (La )x (Lb )y ]-type complexes, in which the denticity of La and Lb is equal. Representative examples of some important homoleptic architectures are also provided, wherever possible, to set a background for a better understanding of the related heteroleptic versions. The purpose of this review is to pave the way for the construction of several unique heteroleptic coordination assemblies that might exhibit emergent supramolecular functions.

Abstract
We present here the synthesis of chiral BINOL-derived (BINOL=1,1'-bi-2-naphthol) bisamine and bispyridine-aldehyde building blocks that can be used for the self-assembly of novel chiral FeII 2 L3 cages when mixed with an iron(II) precursor. The properties of a series of chiral cages were studied by NMR and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy, cold-spray ionization MS, and molecular modeling. Upon formation of the M2 L3 cages, the iron corners can adopt various isomeric forms: mer, fac-Δ, or fac-Λ. We found that the coordination geometry around the metal centers in R-Cages 1 and 2 were influenced by the chiral BINOL backbone only to a limited extent, as a mixture of cages was formed with fac and mer configurations at the iron corners. However, single cage species (fac-RR-Cage and fac-RS-Cage) that are enantiopure and highly symmetric were obtained by generating these chiral M2 L3 cages by using the bispyridine-aldehyde building blocks in combination with chiral amine moieties to form pyridylimine ligands for coordination to iron. Next to consistent NMR spectra, the CD spectra confirm the configurations fac-(Λ,Λ) and fac-(Δ,Δ) corresponding to RR- and RS-Cage, respectively.

Abstract
Pentaphosphaferrocene [Cp*Fe(η5 -P5 )] (1 a) represents an excellent building block for the template-directed synthesis of spherical supramolecules. Here, the self-assembly of 1 a with CuI and CuII halides in the presence of the template complexes [FeCp2 ][PF6 ], [CoCp2 ][PF6 ] and [CoCp2 ] is reported, testifying to the redox behavior of the formed supramolecules. The oxidation or reduction capacity of these reactive complexes does not inhibit their template impact and, for the first time, the cationic metallocene [CoCp2 ]+ is enclosed in unprecedented anionic organometallic hosts. Furthermore, the large variety of structural motifs, as icosahedral, trigonal antiprismatic, cuboidal and tetragonal antiprismatic arrangements of 1 a units are realized in the supramolecules [FeCp2 ]@[{1 a}12 (CuBr)17.3 ] (3), [CoCp2 ]+3 {[CoCp2 ]+ @[{1 a}8 Cu24.25 Br28.25 (CH3 CN)6 ]4- } (4), {[Cp2 Co]+ @[{1 a}8 (CuI)28 (CH3 CN)9.8 ]}{[Cp2 Co]+ @[{1 a)}8 Cu24.4 I26.4 (CH3 CN)8 ]2- } (5), and [{1 a}3 {(1 a)2 NH}3 Cu16 I10 (CH3 CN)7 ] (6), respectively.

Abstract
The design of redox-active metal-organic frameworks and coordination networks (CNs), which exhibit metal- and/or ligand-centered redox activity, has recently received increased attention. In this study, the redox-active metalloligand (RML) [Me4 N]3 fac-[CrIII (mp)3 ] (1) (mp=2-mercaptophenolato) was synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, and its reversible ligand-centered one-electron oxidation was examined by cyclic voltammetry and spectroelectrochemical measurements. Since complex 1 contains O/S coordination sites in three directions, complexation with K+ ions led to the formation of the two-dimensional honeycomb sheet-structured [K3 fac-{CrIII (mp)3 }(H2 O)6 ]n (2⋅6 H2 O), which is the first example of a redox-active CN constructed from a RML with o-disubstituted benzene ligands. Herein, we unambiguously demonstrate the ligand-centered redox activity of the RML within the CN 2⋅6 H2 O in the solid state.

Abstract
Self-assembly of 1:1:2 MII (BF4 )2 (M=Zn or Fe), pyrazine-2,5-dicarbaldehyde (1) and 2-(2-aminoethyl)pyridine gave trimetallic triangle architectures rather than the anticipated tetrametallic [2×2] squares. Options for the nontrivial synthesis of 1 are considered, and synthetic details provided for both preferred routes. Rare cyclohelicate triangle architectures are observed for the pair of structurally characterized yellow-brown [Zn3 L3 ](BF4 )6 and dark green [Fe3 L3 ](BF4 )6 complexes of the neutral bis-terdentate Schiff base L. In order to form these pyrazine-edged triangles, the octahedral metal ions-with all 6 N-donors provided by the terdentate binding pockets of two L-are located 0.4-0.5 Å out of the plane of the bridging pyrazines, towards the center of the triangle. Density functional theory calculations confirm that simple particle counting entropic arguments, which predict triangles over squares, are correct here, with the triangles shown to be energetically favored over the corresponding squares. However, importantly, DFT analysis of these and related triangle versus square systems also show that vibrational contributions to entropy dominate and may significantly influence the preferred architecture, such that simple particle counting cannot in general be reliably employed to predict the observed architecture.

Abstract
Since the advent of supramolecular chemistry, there has been keen interest in the synthesis of interlocked molecules, given their unique potential to act as receptors, molecular machines and even motors. Despite advances in the complexity of molecular machines that can be synthesised and operated in solution, reports of the operation or even attachment of complex supramolecular systems on solid surfaces are less common. Synthetic challenges and a lack of adequate characterisation techniques to monitor the thermodynamic and kinetic influences governing assembly at the solution-surface interface has slowed progress in this area of research. This Review looks at the developments in the field of covalently assembled interlocked architectures on gold, silica and polymer surfaces, highlighting the differences observed between solution and surface assembly of these unique structures.

Abstract
Herein we combine the subcomponent self-assembly and integrative self-sorting techniques with the well-established platinum(II)-pyridine coordination-driven self-assembly to report the quantitative synthesis and spectroscopic characterization of a heterometallic CuI -PtII quadrilateral QL that is formed from a total of twelve molecular components from four unique species, including 5-(pyridin-4-ylethynyl)picolinaldehyde (1), p-toluidine (2), [Cu(CH3 CN4 ](PF6 ) (3), and cis-Pt(PEt3 )2 (OTf)2 (4), in a 4:4:2:2 ratio. Despite the many different entities potentially forming from these four precursor units, the clean formation of QL is mainly guided by the different coordination preferences of the metal ions 3 and 4, and the design criteria inherent in compounds 1 and 2.

Abstract
The reaction of [Cp(Bn) Fe(η(5) -P5 )] (1) (Cp(Bn) =η(5) -C5 (CH2 Ph)5 ) with CuI selectively yields a novel spherical supramolecule (CH2 Cl2 )3.4 @[(Cp(Bn) FeP5 )12 {CuI}54 (MeCN)1.46 ] (2) showing a linkage of the scaffold atoms which is beyond the Fullerene topology. Its extended CuI framework reveals an outer diameter of 3.7 nm-a size that has not been reached before using five-fold symmetric building blocks. Furthermore, 2 shows a remarkable solubility in CH2 Cl2 , and NMR spectroscopy reveals that the scaffold of the supramolecule remains intact in solution. In addition, a novel 2D polymer [{Cp(Bn) Fe(η(5) -P5 )}2 {Cu6 (μ-I)2 (μ3 -I)4 }]n (3) with an uncommon structural motif was isolated. Its formation can be avoided by using a large excess of CuI in the reaction with 1.

Abstract
A facile high yield, self-assembly process that leads to a terpyridine-based, three-dimensional, bis-rhomboidal-shaped, molecular wheel is reported. The desired coordination-driven supramolecular wheel involves eight structurally distorted tristerpyridine (tpy) ligands possessing a 60° angle between the adjacent tpy units and twelve Zn(2+) ions. The tpy ligand plays dual roles in the self-assembly process: two are staggered at 180° to create the internal hub, while six produce the external rim. The wheel can be readily generated by mixing the tpy ligand and Zn(2+) in a stoichiometric ratio of 2:3; full characterization is provided by ESI-MS, NMR spectroscopy, and TEM imaging.
