Abstract
Newly synthesized dinuclear crystalline polymer, the silver complex of bidentate Sulfamethoxazole (Ag-SMX) in the presence of secondary ligand pyrrolidine has been characterized by elemental, spectral (1H-NMR spectra, FT-IR spectra, UV-Vis spectra.), powder XRD, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (single-crystal) analysis. The synthesis molecular structure of the dinuclear [Ag2(C10H10N3O3S)2(C4H8N)2]n complex reveals a one-dimensional polymeric chain with seesaw geometry (τ4 = 0.71): two silvers interlink each other by argentophilic interaction with Ag1…Ag2 separation distance of 3.0047(6) Å. The Hirshfeld surfaces (HS) and 2D fingerprint plots were used to examine the interconnects in the crystal packing. Molecule properties including MEP, MPA, HOMO-LUMO energy, and global reactivity descriptor parameters were computed to understand the molecule's stability. From ADMET parameters, human Intestinal Absorbance data revealed that the compound has the potential to be well absorbed, and also Ag-smx complex cannot cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB). The capacity of the silver complex to interact with CtDNA was investigated using absorption spectroscopy and viscosity tests. The interaction between CT-DNA reveals that the Ag-SMX complex exhibits the strongest binding affinity among all known sulfonamide derivatives and their metal complexes. The silver complex has higher inhibitory action than the free SMX ligand, according to data from a panel of gram (+ve) and gram (-ve) organisms' minimum inhibitory concentrations. In vitro cytotoxicity investigation revealed that the IC50 value for Ag-SMX is 57.12 g/mL and for SMX is 100.90 g/mL against human lung cancer cell line (A549). This study revealed that, when compared to SMX free-ligand, Ag-SMX is the most effective in terms of cytotoxicity toward the human lung cancer cell line (A549 cell line). In under 120 min, the synthesized Ag-smx complex showed exceptional photo-degradation characteristics against methylene blue (MB) (10 ppm) in visible light radiation.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.

Abstract
Although organic compounds account for more than 99% of currently approved clinical drugs, the established clinical use of cisplatin in cancer or auranofin in rheumatoid arthritis have paved the way to several research initiatives to identify metal-based drugs for a wide range of human diseases. Nitrogen and sulfur donor ligands, characterized by different binding motifs, have been the subject in recent years of one of the main research areas in coordination chemistry. Among the nitrogen/sulfur compounds, very little is known about thiocarbohydrazones (TCH), the higher homologues of the well-known thiosemicarbazones (TSC), and their metal complexes. The extra hydrazine moiety provides the ligands of variable metal binding modes, structural diversity and promising biological implications. The interesting coordination chemistry of TCH has mainly been focused on symmetric derivatives, which are relatively simple to synthesize while few examples of asymmetric ligands have been reported. This informative review on TCHs and their metal complexes will be helpful for improving the design of metal-based pharmaceuticals for applications ranging from anticancer to antinfective therapy.

Abstract
The functionalized molecules with specific molecular sites appear to be a promising approach for detection of cation in UV-visible and fluorescence spectroscopy. The synthesized receptor 4-((5-methylfuran-2-yl)methylene)hydrazono)methyl)phenol MFMHMP was found selective for La3+ among Ag+, K+, Na+, Be2+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Eu3+, Al3+, La3+, Zr4+, Th4+, UO22+, Fe3+, Fe2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Cd2+ and Hg2+ metal ions used as their nitrates by UV-visible spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy. The binding nature of MFMHMP with La3+ ion was analyzed by UV-visible, fluorescence, IR, mass spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetric studies. The stoichiometry was established to be 1:1 by Benesi-Hildebrand, mole-ratio method and method of continuous variation (Job's method) with good association affinity K = 6.245 × 104 M-1. Computational studies and Density functional theory (DFT) calculation gives the proof of electron transfer during excitation and emission. Binding energy of complex through Density Function Theory -62.387 kcal/mol has also indication of strong binding. The electron transfer energy of Higher occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) to Lower unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) is about 4.662 eV for MFMHMP+La3+ Complex. Among that all transitions HOMO → LUMO + 8 and HOMO → LUMO + 9 play a key role for the blue shift transition during complexation.

Abstract
The coordination behavior of a series of transition metal ions named Cr(III), Fe(III), Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II) and Cd(II) with a mono negative tridentate guaifenesin ligand (GFS) (OOO donation sites) and 1,10-phenanthroline (Phen) is reported. The metal complexes are characterized based on elemental analyses, IR, (1)H NMR, solid reflectance, magnetic moment, molar conductance, UV-vis spectral studies, mass spectroscopy, ESR, XRD and thermal analysis (TG and DTG). The ternary metal complexes were found to have the formulae of [M(GFS)(Phen)Cl]Cl·nH2O (M=Cr(III) (n=1) and Fe(III) (n=0)), [M(GFS)(Phen)Cl]·nH2O (M=Mn(II) (n=0), Zn(II) (n=0) and Cu(II) (n=3)) and [M(GFS)(Phen)(H2O)]Cl·nH2O (M=Co(II) (n=0), Ni(II) (n=0) and Cd(II) (n=4)). All the chelates are found to have octahedral geometrical structures. The ligand and its ternary chelates are subjected to thermal analyses (TG and DTG). The GFS ligand, in comparison to its ternary metal complexes also was screened for their antibacterial activity on gram positive bacteria (Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus), gram negative bacteria (Escherichia coli and Neisseria gonorrhoeae) and for in vitro antifungal activity against (Candida albicans). The activity data show that the metal complexes have antibacterial and antifungal activity more than the parent GFS ligand. The complexes were also screened for its in vitro anticancer activity against the Breast cell line (MFC7) and the results obtained show that they exhibit a considerable anticancer activity.

Abstract
Two new hydrazone ligands, H2L(1) and H2L(2), were synthesized by the condensation of 4,6-diacetylresorcinol with 3-hydrazino-5,6-diphenyl-1,2,4-triazine and isatin monohydrazone, respectively. The structures of the ligands were elucidated by elemental analyses, IR, (1)H NMR, electronic and mass spectra. Reactions of the ligands with several copper(II) salts, including AcO(-), NO3(-), SO4(2-), Cl(-) and Br(-) afforded mono- and binuclear metal complexes. Also, the ligands were allowed to react with Cu(II) ion in the presence of a secondary ligand (L') [N,O-donor; 8-hydroxyquinoline, N,N-donor; 1,10-phenanthroline or O,O-donor; benzoylacetone]. Characterization and structure elucidation of the prepared complexes were achieved by elemental and thermal analyses, IR, electronic, mass and ESR spectra as well as conductivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The ESR spin Hamiltonian parameters of some complexes were calculated. The spectroscopic data showed that the H2L(1) ligand acts as a neutral or monobasic tridentate ligand while the H2L(2) ligand acts as a bis(monobasic tridentate) ligand. The coordination sites with the copper(II) ion are phenolic oxygen, azomethine nitrogen and triazinic nitrogen (H2L(1) ligand) or isatinic oxygen (H2L(2) ligand). The metal complexes exhibited octahedral and square planar geometrical arrangements depending on the nature of the anion. The ligands and some metal complexes showed antimicrobial activity.

Abstract
The 1:1 condensation of o-acetoacetylphenol and 1,2-diaminopropane under condition of high dilution gives the mono-condensed Schiff base, (E)-3-(1-aminopropan-2-ylimino)-1-(2-hydroxyphenyl)butan-1-one. The mono-condensed Schiff base has been used for further condensation with isatin to obtain the new asymmetrical dicompartmental Schiff base ligand, (E)-3-(2-((E)-4-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-4-oxobutan-2-ylideneamino) propylimino)indolin-2-one (H3L) with a N2O3 donor set. Reactions of the ligand with metal salts give a series of new binuclear complexes. The ligand and its metal complexes were characterized by elemental analyses, IR, (1)H and (13)C NMR, electronic, ESR and mass spectra, conductivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements as well as thermal analyses. The analytical and spectroscopic tools showed that the complexes can be formulated as: [(HL)(VO)2(SO4)(H2O)]·4H2O, [(HL)Fe2Cl4(H2O)3]·EtOH, [(HL)Fe2(ox)Cl2(H2O)3]·2H2O, [(L)M2(OAc)(H2O)m]·nH2O; M=Co, Ni or Cu, m=4, 0 and n=2, 3, [(HL)Cu2Cl]Cl·6H2O and [(L)(UO2)2(OAc)(H2O)3]·6H2O. The metal complexes exhibited octahedral geometrical arrangements except copper complexes that exhibited tetrahedral geometries and uranyl complex in which the metal ion is octa-coordinated. The Schiff base and its metal complexes were evaluated for antimicrobial activity against Gram positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus), Gram negative bacteria (Escherichia coli) and fungi (Candida albicans and Aspergillus flavus). The ligand and some of its complexes were found to be biologically active. The DNA-binding properties of the copper complexes (6 and 7) have been investigated by electronic absorption, fluorescence and viscosity measurements. The results obtained indicate that these complexes bind to DNA via an intercalation binding mode with an intrinsic binding constant, Kb of 1.34×10(4) and 2.5×10(4) M(-1), respectively.

Abstract
A tridentate ONS donor ligand, HL, was synthesized by the condensation of 2-aminochromone-3-carboxaldehyde with thiosemicarbazide. The structure of the ligand was elucidated by elemental analyses, IR, (1)H and (13)C NMR, electronic and mass spectra. Reaction of the ligand with several copper(II) salts, including AcO(-), NO3(-), SO4(2-), Cl(-), Br(-) and ClO4(-) afforded different metal complexes that reflect the non-coordinating or weakly coordinating power of the ClO4(-) and Br(-) anions as compared to the strongly coordinating power of AcO(-), SO4(2-), Cl(-) and NO3(-) anions. Also, the ligand was allowed to react with Cu(II) ion in the presence of a secondary ligand (L') [N,O-donor; 8-hydroxyquinoline or N,N-donor; 1,10-phenanthroline]. Characterization and structure elucidation of the prepared complexes were achieved by elemental and thermal analyses, IR, electronic, mass and EPR spectra as well as conductivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The EPR spin Hamiltonian parameters of some complexes were calculated. The metal complexes exhibited octahedral and square planar geometrical arrangements depending on the nature of the anion. The ligand and most of its metal complexes showed antibacterial activity towards Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis), Gram-negative bacteria (Salmonella typhimurium and Escherichia coli), yeast (Candida albicans) and fungus (Aspergillus fumigatus).

Abstract
Reactions of 4,6-diacetylresorcinol with different cobalt(II) and copper(II) salts viz., OAc(-), Cl(-), NO3(-) and SO4(2-), yielded a new series of binuclear metal complexes. Reactions of the ligand with these metal ions in the presence of a secondary ligand (L') [O,O-donor; acetylacetone, N,O-donor; 8-hydroxyquinoline or N,N-donor; 1,10-phenanthroline and N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine] in 1:2:2 (L:M:L') molar ratio yielded mixed-ligand complexes with different molar ratios. The metal complexes were characterized by elemental and thermal analyses, IR, electronic, ESR and mass spectra as well as conductivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The analytical and spectroscopic data suggested that the H2L ligand behaves as a neutral, monobasic or dibasic tetradentate ligand, depending on the type of the anion and secondary ligand used, through the two phenolic and two carbonyl groups. Electronic spectra, magnetic and conductivity measurements showed that all complexes are octahedral with non-electrolytic nature. The profile of ESR spectra of copper(II) complexes suggested the octahedral geometry and the spin Hamiltonian parameters of the complexes were calculated and discussed. Molecular orbital calculations were performed for metal complexes using Hyperchem 7.52 program on the bases of PM3 level and the results correlated with the experimental data. The free ligand and some of its metal complexes showed antimicrobial activity towards some of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, yeast (Candida albicans) and fungus (Aspergillus fumigatus).

Abstract
Two Schiff base ligands derived from condensation of phthalaldehyde and o-phenylenediamine in 1:2 (L(1)) and 2:1 (L(2)) having bifunctional coordinated groups (NH(2) and CHO groups, respectively) and their metal complexes with Ni(II) and UO(2)(II) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductance, magnetic susceptibilities and spectral data (IR, (1)H NMR, mass and solid reflectance) as well as thermal, XRPD and SEM analysis. The formula [Ni(L(1))Cl(2)]·2.5H(2)O, [UO(2)(L(1))(NO(3))(2)]·2H(2)O, [Ni(L(2))Cl(2)]·1.5H(2)O and [UO(2)(L(2))(NO(3))(2)] have been suggested for the complexes. The vibrational spectral data show that the ligands behave as neutral ligands and coordinated to the metal ions in a tetradentate manner. The Ni(II) complexes are six coordinate with octahedral geometry and the ligand field parameters: D(q), B, β and LFSE were calculated while, UO(2)(II) complexes are eight coordinate with dodecahedral geometry and the force constant, F(U-O) and bond length, R(U-O) were calculated. The thermal decomposition of complexes ended with metal chloride/nitrate as a final product and the highest thermal stability is displayed by [UO(2)(L(2))(NO(3))(2)] complex. The X-ray powder diffraction data revealed the formation of nano sized crystalline complexes. The SEM analysis provides the morphology of the synthesized compounds and SEM image of [UO(2)(L(2))(NO(3))(2)] complex exhibits nano rod structure. The growth-inhibiting potential of the ligands and their complexes has been assessed against a variety of bacterial and fungal strains.

Abstract
Phenoxide bridged later first row transition metal(II) complexes have been prepared by the interaction of later 3d transition metal(II) chlorides with tetranucleating compartmental Schiff base ligand system derived from 2,6-diformyl-4-methylphenol, p-phenylenediamine and 2-hydrazinobenzothiazole. Ligand and complexes were characterized by analytical, spectral (IR, UV-visible, ESR, FAB-mass and fluorescence), magnetic and thermal studies. All complexes are found to have octahedral geometry. The mutual influence of metal centres in terms of cooperative effect on the electronic, magnetic, electrochemical and structural properties was investigated. The Schiff base and its complexes have been screened for their antibacterial (against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and antifungal activities (against Aspergillus niger, and Candida albicans).

Abstract
The stability constants of three isomeric quinolyl hydrazones; {4,6-(para); 4,7-(meta) and 4,8-MeBHQ(ortho)} towards some bivalent metal ions have been determined in 75% solvent (dioxane, isopropanol, ethanol and methanol)-water by a pH-titrimetry. The insertion of the Me-group in the 8-position decreases the stability of the complexes to a great extent. The complexation of the ortho-derivative is endothermic, whereas that of the para-derivative is exothermic. Using the solvent parameters, the stability constants of the para-derivative towards Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) ions were evaluated in aqueous medium by five different methods. Also, the electronic absorption spectra of the ortho-hydrazone have been studied in solvents of various polarities to investigate the dependence of the band shift (Δύ) on the solvent parameters viz. 1/D, Z, E(T), DN, AN and (α, β, π*). The interaction of the hydrazones with CoCl(2)·6H(2)O afforded an octahedral complex in case of the ortho-hydrazone and square planar complexes in case of the meta- and para-hydrazones.

Abstract
A novel chelating agent (Sqtsc; H(4)L) bearing both hard and soft donor atoms was synthesized by the condensation of squaric acid with thiosemicarbazide. The ligand has two symmetrical sets of donor atoms (SNO), therefore, it was allowed to react with the metal ions at the mole ratio 2:1 (M:L). Mono- and bi-nuclear chelates were obtained in which the ligand showed a variety of modes of bonding viz. (OO)(2-), (SNNS)(2-) and (SNO)(2-) per each metal ion supporting the ambidentate and flexidentate characters of the ligand. The mode of bonding and basicity of the ligand depend mainly on the type of the metal cation and its counter anion. All the obtained complexes have the preferable O(h)-geometry except the VO(II)-complex (7) which has also the preferable square pyramid geometry. Structural elucidation was achieved via elemental and spectral data.

Seleem HS, El-Inany GA, El-Shetary BA, Mousa MA. The ligational behavior of a phenolic quinolyl hydrazone towards copper(II)- ions. Chem Cent J 2011; 5:2. [PMID: 21223587 PMCID: PMC3033234 DOI: 10.1186/1752-153x-5-2] [Citation(s) in RCA: 12] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.9] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 11/14/2010] [Accepted: 01/11/2011] [Indexed: 11/25/2022] Open
Abstract
Background The heterocyclic hydrazones constitute an important class of biologically active drug molecules. The hydrazones have also been used as herbicides, insecticides, nematocides, redenticides, and plant growth regulators as well as plasticizers and stabilizers for polymers. The importance of the phenolic quinolyl hydrazones arises from incorporating the quinoline ring with the phenolic compound; 2,4-dihydroxy benzaldehyde. Quinoline ring has therapeutic and biological activities whereas, phenols have antiseptic and disinfectants activities and are used in the preparation of dyes, bakelite and drugs. The present study is planned to check the effect of the counter anions on the type and geometry of the isolated copper(II)- complexes as well as the ligational behavior of the phenolic hydrazone; 4-[(2-(4,8-dimethylquinolin-2-yl)hydrazono)methyl] benzene-1,3-diol; (H2L). Results A phenolic quinolyl hydrazone (H2L) was allowed to react with various copper(II)- salts (Cl‾, Br‾, NO3‾, ClO4‾, AcO‾, SO42-). The reactions afforded dimeric complexes (ClO4‾, AcO‾ ), a binuclear complex (NO3‾ ) and mononuclear complexes (the others; Cl‾, Br‾, SO42-). The isolated copper(II)- complexes have octahedral, square pyramid and square planar geometries. Also, they reflect the strong coordinating ability of NO3‾, Cl‾, Br‾, AcO‾ and SO42- anions. Depending on the type of the anion, the ligand showed three different modes of bonding viz. (NN)0 for the mononuclear complexes (3, 4, 6), (NO)- with O- bridging for the dimeric complexes (1, 5) and a mixed mode [(NN)0 + (NO)- with O- bridging] for the binuclear nitrato- complex (2). Conclusion The ligational behavior of the phenolic hydrazone (H2L) is highly affected by the type of the anion. The isolated copper(II)- complexes reflect the strong coordinating power of the SO42-, AcO‾, Br‾, Cl‾ and NO3‾ anions. Also, they reflect the structural diversity (octahedral, square pyramid and square planar) depending on the type of the counter anion.
