Rationally design a novel Zn-MOF for fluorescent detection of nitrofuran antibiotics: The synthesis, structure and sensing applications

Nitrofuran antibiotics (NFAs) residues in waterare a persistent concern for the public due to the potential threats they pose to human health and the environment. Therefore, efficient probes that are capable of detecting trace amounts of antibiotics in real water environments have become a top priority. Herein, a novel fluorescent Zn-MOF probe (MOF-1) was revealed for the highly selective and sensitive sensing of NFAs. MOF-1 was rationally constructed with Zn(NO3)2·6H2O, 5,5'-(anthracene-9,10-diyl) diisophthalic acid (H4ADIP) and 1,3-bis(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)-benzene (mbib) by using the solvothermal method. Fluorescence sensing experiments demonstrate that MOF-1 can function as a fluorescent sensor for selective, sensitive, and rapid detection of NFAs among 15 antibiotics including ciprofloxacin (CPFX), chloramphenicol (CAP), sulfonamides and NFAs. Fluorescence titration experiments indicated that MOF-1 exhibited remarkably low detection limits of 0.19 μM, 0.26 μM, and 0.34 μM for furazolidone (FZD), furaltadone (FDH) and nitrofurazone (NFZ), respectively. Meanwhile, MOF-1 was successfully employed for NFAs detection in real samples with the recoveries of 98.7 % - 104.1 %, and a relative standard deviation below 5.1 %. Moreover, the sensing mechanism could be ascribed to the synergistic effect between the internal filtering effect and photoinduced electron transfer according to the experiment results and DFT calculations. Additionally, test strips were prepared based on MOF-1 for point of care testing of NFAs.

Sonochemical synthesis, optical properties and DFT studies on novel (N-arylamino)phenothiazinium dyes suitable for fluorescence cells imaging

Novel (N-arylamino)phenothiazinium dyes containing meta-substituted-arylamine auxochrome units were successfully obtained by applying a sonochemical protocol designed for a more efficient energy usage in the preparation of methylene blue (MB) analogues. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed the spatial arrangement in aggregated crystalline state of (N-(meta-bromoaryl)amino)phenothiazinium dye with minor variances induced by the nature of the halogenide counterion (iodide or chloride). The optical UV-vis properties of the novel (N-arylamino)phenothiazinium dyes were comparable to those of the parent MB, with the longest wavelength absorption maxima situated in the visible range (640-680 nm), large molar extinction coefficients (log ε = 4.5-5.1) and weak solvatochromism in polar solvents. Their fluorescence emission in solid state was evidenced by One Photon Excited Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging (OPE-FLIM) and Two Photon Excited Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging (TPE-FLIM) experiments. Theoretical calculations based on Time Dependent-Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT) at B3PW91 and CAM-B3LYP/def2-SV(P) level of theory predicted absorption and fluorescence emission wavelength maxima in reasonable agreement with experimental data. Computational results suggest that the electronic excitations imply a departure from the planar molecular ground state towards geometrically rearranged excited states disfavoring the vibronic couplings due to a high degree of flexibility induced by the conformational motion of the N-arylamino auxochromes. Preliminary studies regarding the dyes' relevance in biological environment indicated lipophilicity (log P octanol/water 0.5-2.3), no aggregation tendency in diluted solutions in the concentration range 10-50 microM and ability for cytoplasmatic staining of D407 human retinal pigment epithelial cells.

Pharmaceutical cocrystals: a rising star in drug delivery applications

Pharmaceutical cocrystals, owing to their manifold applications, are acting as bridge between drug discovery and pharmaceutical product development. The ability to scale up pharmaceutical cocrystals through continuous manufacturing approaches offers superior and economic pharmaceutical products. Moreover, cocrystals can be an aid for the nanoparticulate systems to solve the issues related to scale-up and cost. Cocrystals grabbed attention of academic researchers and pharmaceutical scientist due to their potential to target various diseases like cancer. The present review is mainly focussed on the diverse and comprehensive applications of pharmaceutical cocrystals in drug delivery including solubility and dissolution enhancement, improvement of bioavailability of drug, mechanical and flow properties of active pharmaceutical ingredients, controlled/sustained release and colour tuning of API. Besides, phytochemical based cocrystals, multi-drug cocrystals and cocrystals for tumour therapy have been discussed in this review. Additionally, recent progress pertinent to pharmaceutical cocrystals is also included, which may provide future directions to manufacturing and scale-up of cocrystals.

Benzylidene-isophorone hybrids with strong anticancer activity

Isophorone is a cyclic ketone that has gained significant attention in the field of organic chemistry due to its versatile reactivity and structural attributes. Derivatives of isophorone offer a broad spectrum of applications ranging from pharmaceuticals to polymer chemistry. With the aim of developing novel hybrid structures based on benzylidene by combining with isophorone scaffold, we report 3 derivatives of the benzylidene-isophorone hybrids and its potent anticancer activity. In order to optimize the anticancer activity of hybrids di-substitution of -Cl group in C2 and C6 position of phenyl ring (compound1), -OCH3 group in C2 and C5 position of phenyl ring (compound2), and -OCH3 group in C2 and C3 position of phenyl ring (compound3) of benzylidene (PhCH=) moiety were made. The structure of Compounds1,2 and 3 were elucidated using spectral and XRD methods. Compounds1,2 and 3 exhibit space group P c a 21, P-1, and P 1 21/n 1 respectively. Compounds1,2 and 3 were tested for the potent anticancer activity on MDA MB-231 cell line. All the three compounds exhibit good anticancer activity on the breast cancer cells. The parent hybrid with ortho, ortho directing -Cl (1) exhibits strong antiproliferation effect (IC50 = 0.028 µM) on MDA-MB 231 cell line. However, hybrid structures with ortho, meta directing -OCH3 (2) group showed moderate effect (IC50 = 0.061 µM) and hybrid with ortho, meta directing -OCH3 (3) substitution showed the least potent anticancer activity (IC50 = 0.074 µM). The benzylidene-isophorone hybrids exhibit anticancer effects in the following order: 1 > 2 > 3.

Covalent versus noncovalent attachments of [FeFe]‑hydrogenase models onto carbon nanotubes for aqueous hydrogen evolution reaction

In an effort to develop the biomimetic chemistry of [FeFe]‑hydrogenases for catalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in aqueous environment, we herein report the integrations of diiron dithiolate complexes into carbon nanotubes (CNTs) through three different strategies and compare the electrochemical HER performances of the as-resulted 2Fe2S/CNT hybrids in neutral aqueous medium. That is, three new diiron dithiolate complexes [{(μ-SCH2)2N(C6H4CH2C(O)R)}Fe2(CO)6] (R = N-oxylphthalimide (1), NHCH2pyrene (2), and NHCH2Ph (3)) were prepared and could be further grafted covalently to CNTs via an amide bond (this 2Fe2S/CNT hybrid is labeled as H1) as well as immobilized noncovalently to CNTs via π-π stacking interaction (H2) or via simple physisorption (H3). Meanwhile, the molecular structures of 1-3 are determined by elemental analysis and spectroscopic as well as crystallographic techniques, whereas the structures and morphologies of H1-H3 are characterized by various spectroscopies and scanning electronic microscopy. Further, the electrocatalytic HER activity trend of H1 > H2 ≈ H3 is observed in 0.1 M phosphate buffer solution (pH = 7) through different electrochemical measurements, whereas the degradation processes of H1-H3 lead to their electrocatalytic deactivation in the long-term electrolysis as proposed by post operando analysis. Thus, this work is significant to extend the potential application of carbon electrode materials engineered with diiron molecular complexes as heterogeneous HER electrocatalysts for water splitting to hydrogen.

Steroidal 21-imidazolium salt derivatives: Synthesis and anticancer activity

Nitrogen-containing steroids are known as prostate cancer therapeutics. In this work, a series of pregnane derivatives bearing an imidazolium moiety were synthesized using Δ16-20-ketones as starting material. An improved approach for the construction of the 20-keto-21-heterocycle-substituted fragment involved the rearrangement of 16,17-epoxides with HCl, followed by reaction of the formed α-chloroketone with 1-substituted imidazoles. Binding affinity analysis of the imidazolium steroids and their synthetic intermediates to human CYP17A1 showed only type I (substrate-like) interactions. The strongest affinity was observed for 16α,17α-epoxy-5α-pregnan-20-on-3β-ol (Kd = 0.66 ± 0.05 µM). The steroid derivatives have been evaluated for antitumor activity against a range of prostate cancer cells as well as against various other solid tumor and hematologic cancer cell lines. All 21-imidazolium salts were active against the hormone-dependent prostate cancer line LNCaP. The most pronounced cytotoxicity in solid tumor and hematologic cancer cell lines was observed for intermediate product, 21-chloro-5α-pregn-16-en-20-on-3β-ol. Among the imidazolium salts, the derivatives with a single bond were more cytotoxic than their unsaturated congeners.

Synthesis and biological characterization of an orally bioavailable lactate dehydrogenase-A inhibitor against pancreatic cancer

Lactate dehydrogenase-A (LDHA) is the major isoform of lactate dehydrogenases (LDH) that is overexpressed and linked to poor survival in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Despite some progress, current LDH inhibitors have poor structural and physicochemical properties or exhibit unfavorable pharmacokinetics that have hampered their development. The present study reports the synthesis and biological evaluation of a novel class of LDHA inhibitors comprising a succinic acid monoamide motif. Compounds 6 and 21 are structurally related analogs that demonstrated potent inhibition of LDHA with IC50s of 46 nM and 72 nM, respectively. We solved cocrystal structures of compound 21-bound to LDHA that showed that the compound binds to a distinct allosteric site between the two subunits of the LDHA tetramer. Inhibition of LDHA correlated with reduced lactate production and reduction of glycolysis in MIA PaCa-2 pancreatic cancer cells. The lead compounds inhibit the proliferation of human pancreatic cancer cell lines and patient-derived 3D organoids and exhibit a synergistic cytotoxic effect with the OXPHOS inhibitor phenformin. Unlike current LDHA inhibitors, 6 and 21 have appropriate pharmacokinetics and ligand efficiency metrics, exhibit up to 73% oral bioavailability, and a cumulative half-life greater than 4 h in mice.

Structurally diverse diterpenoids and phenanthrene derivatives from the roots of Baliospermumsolanifolium

Ten undescribed diterpenoids (1-10) and three undescribed phenanthrene derivatives (11-13), together with seven known compounds, were isolated from the roots of Baliospermum solanifolium. Their structures were determined by a combination of spectroscopic data analysis, electronic circular dichroism calculations and single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Compounds 1-7 (baliosperoids A-G) represent the examples of 20-nor-ent-podocarpane class first discovered in nature. In particular, compound 7 possesses a unique 2,3-seco ring system incorporating γ-butanolide moiety. All isolates were assessed for their cytotoxic activities against HT-29, HCT-116, HCT-15, MCF-7, and A549 cell lines as well as their inhibitory effects on lipopolysaccharide-induced NO production in RAW264.7 cells. Compound 1, a 20-nor-ent-podocarpane-type diterpenoid possessing a Δ1,2 double bond, not only exhibited considerable proliferation inhibition against five human cancer cell lines, with IC50 values ranging from 4.13 to 23.45 μM, but also displayed the most potent inhibitory activity on NO production with IC50 value at the nanomolar level (0.63 ± 0.21 μM).

Pt(II) Bis(pyrrole-imine) complexes: Luminescent probes and cytotoxicity in MCF-7 cells†

Four Pt(II) bis(pyrrole-imine) Schiff base chelates (1-4) were synthesised by previously reported methods, through a condensation reaction, and the novel crystal structure of 2,2'-{propane-1,3-diylbis[nitrilo(E)methylylidene]}bis(pyrrol-1-ido)platinum(II) (1) was obtained. Pt(II) complexes 1-4 exhibited phosphorescence, with increased luminescence in anaerobic solvents or when bound to human serum albumin (HSA). One of the complexes shows a 15.6-fold increase in quantum yield when bound to HSA and could be used to detect HSA concentrations as low as 5 nM. Pt(II) complexes 1-3 was investigated as potential theranostic agents in MCF-7 breast cancer cells, but only complex 3 exhibited cytotoxicity when irradiated with UV light (λ355nmExcitation). Interestingly, the cytotoxicity of complex 1 was unresponsive to UV light irradiation. This indicates that only complex 3 can be considered a potential photosensitising agent.

Novel 4-[4-(4-methylpiperazin-1-yl)phenyl]-6-arylpyrimidine derivatives and their antitrypanosomal activities against T.brucei

Human African trypanosomiasis, or sleeping sickness, is a neglected tropical disease caused by Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense and Trypanosoma brucei gambiense and is invariably fatal unless treated. Current therapies present limitations in their application, parasite resistance, or require further clinical investigation for wider use. Our work, informed by previous findings, presents novel 4-[4-(4-methylpiperazin-1-yl)phenyl]-6-arylpyrimidine derivatives with promising antitrypanosomal activity. In particular, 32 exhibits an in vitro EC50 value of 0.5 µM against Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense, and analogues 29, 30 and 33 show antitrypanosomal activities in the <1 µM range. We have demonstrated that substituted 4-[4-(4-methylpiperazin-1-yl)phenyl]-6-arylpyrimidines present promising antitrypanosomal hit molecules with potential for further preclinical development.

The crystal structure of olanzapine form III

The antipsychotic drug olanzapine is well known for its complex polymorphism. Although widely investigated, the crystal structure of one of its anhydrous polymorphs, form III, is still unknown. Its appearance, always in concomitance with forms II and I, and the impossibility of isolating it from that mixture, have prevented its structure determination so far. The scenario has changed with the emerging field of 3D electron diffraction (3D ED) and its great advantages in the characterization of polyphasic mixtures of nanosized crystals. In this study, we show how the application of 3D ED allows the ab initio structure determination and dynamical refinement of this elusive crystal structure that remained unknown for more than 20 years. Olanzapine form III is monoclinic and shows a similar but shifted packing with respect to form II. It is remarkably different from the lowest-energy structures predicted by the energy-minimization algorithms of crystal structure prediction.

Isolation and Crystallographic Characterization of an Octavalent Co2O2 Diamond Core

High-valent cobalt oxides play a pivotal role in alternative energy technology as catalysts for water splitting and as cathodes in lithium-ion batteries. Despite this importance, the properties governing the stability of high-valent cobalt oxides and specifically possible oxygen evolution pathways are not clear. One root of this limited understanding is the scarcity of high-valent Co(IV)-containing model complexes; there are no reports of stable, well-defined complexes with multiple Co(IV) centers. Here, an oxidatively robust fluorinated ligand scaffold enables the isolation and crystallographic characterization of a Co(IV)2-bis-μ-oxo complex. This complex is remarkably stable, in stark contrast with previously reported Co(IV)2 species that are highly reactive, which demonstrates that oxy-Co(IV)2 species are not necessarily unstable with respect to oxygen evolution. This example underscores a new design strategy for highly oxidizing transition-metal fragments and provides detailed data on a previously inaccessible chemical unit of relevance to O-O bond formation and oxygen evolution.

Understanding Stabilization Factors in Heterodinuclear Ln-Al Complexes from DFT Simulations on Thermochemistry Data: A Counterintuitive Conclusion

This study validates a computational protocol to predict the stability of heterodinuclear complexes by varying ligands on both moieties and analyzing the reaction Gibbs free energy (ΔGr) values. To this purpose, a series of Eu-Al complexes with the general formula [Eu(LEu)3Al(LAl)3], where LEu is the ligand of europium and LAl is an oxygen donor ligand of aluminum, is used. The nature of the bridging bonds and thermochemical characteristics (ΔGr, enthalpy, and entropy) of the complexes were evaluated via DFT calculations. We demonstrated that both entropic and enthalpic effects play a relevant role in the stability. The analysis of the series allows us to identify three ΔGr ranges where heterodinuclear complexes are (i) stable and easy to characterize, (ii) fragile and difficult to characterize, and (iii) not observed (unreacted precursors are recovered). To rationalize the trend of the stability and correlate it with the chemical nature of the ligands, we investigated the condensed Fukui function on the Al fragment. Results suggest that to obtain stable heteronuclear complexes, it is necessary to consider ligands with small condensed Fukui function values. This corresponds to a less nucleophilic oxygen site, yet counterintuitively, it allows the ligand to delocalize the received electronic charge and stabilize the complex.

Substituents' Effect on the Photophysics of Trinuclear Copper(I) and Silver(I) Pyrazolate-Phosphine Cages

A series of structurally similar trinuclear macrocyclic copper(I) and silver(I) pyrazolate complexes bearing various short-bite diphosphine R2PCH(R')PR2 ligands are reported. Upon diphosphine coordination, the planar geometry of the initial complexes undergoes bending along the line between two metal atoms coordinated to the phosphorus moieties. The complexes based on dcpm ligands (R = cyclohexyl, R' = H, Ph) do not exhibit dynamic behavior in solution at room temperature on the 31P NMR time scale as it was previously observed for similar trinuclear copper complexes bearing the dppm (R = Ph, R' = H) scaffold. All copper(I) complexes exhibit thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) behavior in the solid state. Importantly, the use of aliphatic substituents on the phosphorus atoms instead of aromatic ones leads to an almost double increase in the quantum efficiency (ΦPL) of photoluminescence by eliminating nonradiative decay from the 3LCPh states of the dppm aromatic rings. The higher donating ability of the substituents in the pyrazolate ligand (CF3 vs CH3) lowers the energy of the metal-centered excited state, allowing for a significant metal impact on the T1 state. Finally, the Ag(I) complex displays an emission efficiency of approximately 14%, being the highest among known trinuclear silver(I) pyrazolate homometallic derivatives.

Unravelling the mechanism of apoptosis induced by copper(II) complexes of NN2-pincer ligands in lung cancer cells

The invention of efficient chemotherapeutic drugs is essential for human health and development. Keeping this in mind, a series of copper(II) pincer complexes, 1-4, of ligands L1(H) = 2-morpholino-N-(quinolin-8-yl)acetamide, L2(H) = 2-di-n-propylamino-N-(quinolin-8-yl)acetamide, L3(H) = 2-di-n-butylamino-N-(quinolin-8-yl)acetamide and L4(H) = 2-di-n-benzylamino-N-(quinolin-8-yl)acetamide have been synthesized, characterized, and utilized for inhibiting cancer proliferation. Complexes 1-4 showed very efficient activity against lung (A549) and breast (MCF-7) cancer cells, which are the most frequently diagnosed cancers according to the WHO. Among them, 1 was highly active against lung cancer cells with an IC50 value of 8 μM, showing no toxicity towards common L929 fibroblast cell lines (IC50 > 1000 μM). Moreover, AO-EB staining inferred that this cellular demise was attributed to apoptosis, which was determined to be 25.91% of cells by flow cytometry at the IC50 concentration. Furthermore, carboxy-H2DCFDA staining revealed the involvement of ROS in the mechanism. Interestingly, JC-1 dye staining revealed a change in the potential of the mitochondrial membrane, which indicates the enhanced production of ROS in mitochondria. A deep search for the mechanism through in silico studies guided us to the fact that complexes 1-4 might perturb the function of complex I in mitochondria. Furthermore, the studies can be expanded towards clinical applications mainly with morpholine appended complex 1.

B-site substitution effects on the mechanical properties of halide perovskites [C4H12N2][BCl3]·H2O (B = NH4+; K+)

The mechanical properties of halide perovskites have been attracting ever-increasing interest for their significant importance in future industrial applications. However, studies focused on the effect of B-site substitution of molecular perovskites on their mechanical properties are rare, which makes it favorable to shed light on their fundamental structure-mechanical property relationships. Here, using isostructural halide perovskites, [C4H12N2][BCl3]·H2O (B = NH4+; K+), constructed by ionic bonds and hydrogen bonds, respectively, as the model systems, we investigate their mechanical properties through high-pressure synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiments and density functional theory calculations. Owing to the similar sizes of NH4+ and K+, the two compounds possess almost identical cell parameters and frameworks. Upon compression, the two perovskites exhibit analogous behavior except for slight differences in the shrinkage ratio of principal axes and the onset pressure of amorphization. The fitted bulk moduli of [C4H12N2][KCl3]·H2O and [C4H12N2][NH4Cl3]·H2O are 43.89 and 27.28 GPa, respectively. These results demonstrate that the simple replacement of K+ by NH4+ can significantly reduce the structural rigidity of the corresponding compounds, which is ascribed to the weaker strength of NH4⋯Cl hydrogen bonds than that of K-Cl bonds.

Dioxygen Activation by Gold(I)-Distorted Porphyrin Dinuclear Complexes

Interactions between gold-based materials and dioxygen (O2) have motivated researchers to understand reaction mechanisms for O2 activation by homo- and heterogeneous gold catalysts. In this work, gold(I) porphyrin dinuclear complexes were synthesized with a saddle-distorted porphyrin ligand. The gold(I) porphyrin complexes showed unprecedented O2 activation in the presence of protic solvents to form gold(III) tetradentate porphyrin complexes. Mechanistic insights into the O2 activation by the gold(I) center were elucidated by spectroscopic measurements and theoretical calculations, revealing that dissociation of halides on the gold(I) center by alcohol solvents and hydrogen bonding of an N-H proton in the distorted porphyrin with dioxygen played important roles in establishing the unique reactivities of gold(I) complexes.

Spin crossover of a Fe(II) mononuclear complex induced by intermolecular factors involving chloride and solvent ordering

Two new salts of a mononuclear tripodal Fe(II) complex were prepared, using ClO4- and Cl-. The ClO4- sample (1) remained HS at low temperatures, similar to the previously reported BF4- analogue. Crystallising with the Cl- anion (2) led to a markedly different crystal packing arrangement, and engendered SCO activity. This has been correlated to the lower crystal packing density in 2 and the coordination complex conformational differences arising due to the packing motifs of 1 and 2. Further, solvent ordering effects have been proposed to facilitate spin transition behaviour in 2.

Structural diversity and solvent-induced transformations of a copper-based metal-organic framework with highly aromatic ligands

A newly designed tetracarboxylic acid ligand precursor 5,5'-([9,9'-bianthracene]-10,10'-diyl)diisophthalic acid (H4BADI) has been used to prepare a series of copper-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with the formula [Cu2(BADI)(S)2]·xS (denoted as 1-S, where S = solvent) and exhibiting solvent-induced structural transformations. Single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation occurs upon exchanging 1-DMF (DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide) with DMSO (DMSO = dimethylsulfoxide). 1-DMF exhibits reversible structural transformation upon treatment with a variety of solvents; of particular interest is the reversible crystalline-to-amorphous phase transformations observed upon exchange with volatile, polar solvents. A thorough structural investigation of the three framework isomers characterized via single-crystal X-ray diffraction experiments is reported and compared to several other tetracarboxylate-based MOFs composed of dimetal secondary building units.

Facile room-temperature synthesis of layered transition metal phosphonates via hitherto unknown alkali metal tert-butyl phosphonates

A facile room-temperature synthetic method is presented to produce alkali metal salts of tert-butyl phosphonic acid. The reaction between equimolar amounts of alkali metal carbonates and tert-butyl phosphonic acid in methanol results in the formation of [(tBuPO3H)Li(H2O)3·(H2O)] (1), [(tBuPO3)Na2(H2O)4]n (2), and [(tBuPO3H)K(H2O)]n (3). Solid-state structures of these compounds have been confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies and further validated using numerous spectroscopic and analytical techniques. Compounds 1-3 are polymeric solids that are predominantly made up of a 1-D polymeric metal phosphonate chain. This synthetic approach leads to the formation of network structures/polymers in the solid state that otherwise are absent in solution due to the ionic nature of the interaction between the alkali metal ions and phosphonate anions. Apart from the multidentate nature of the phosphonate ligands, additional hydrogen bonding interactions involving water molecules, free P-OH groups, and PO moieties allow these chains to be propagated into 2-D sheets. We have further utilized the completely metalated sodium phosphonate 2 to synthesize layered metal phosphonates [(tBuPO3)Ca(H2O)]n (4), [(tBuPO3)Mn(H2O)]n (5) and [(tBuPO3)Co(H2O)]n (6) via a simple metathesis reaction.

Investigation of titanium(IV)-oxo complexes stabilized with α-hydroxy carboxylate ligands: structural analysis and DFT studies

This paper explores the findings on the structures and physicochemical properties of titanium-oxo complexes (TOCs) stabilized by 9-hydroxy-9-fluorenecarboxylate ligands. Two complexes, with the overall formulas [Ti4O(OiPr)10(O3C14H8)2] (1) and [Ti6O4(OiPr)2(O3C14H8)4(O2CEt)6] (2), have been synthesized. The structures of the isolated crystals (1 and 2) were determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Molecular structure analysis of the crystals also employed vibrational spectroscopic techniques (IR and Raman), UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis-DRS), and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD). Density functional theory (DFT) was utilized to elucidate the electronic structures of these complexes. Furthermore, the theoretical charge distribution in 1 and 2 and their reactivity were calculated. The results of these investigations suggest that the reactivity of 2 is significantly greater than that of 1.

Coinage Metal Complexes of a Sterically Encumbered Anionic Pyridylborate

Sterically loaded, anionic pyridine has been synthesized and utilized successfully in the stabilization of a isoleptic series of coinage metal complexes. The treatment of [4-(Ph3B)-2,6-Trip2Py]K (Trip=2,4,6-iPr3C6H2) with CuBr(PPh3), AgCl(PPh3) or AuCl(PPh3) (Py=pyridine) afforded the corresponding [4-(Ph3B)-2,6-Trip2Py]M(PPh3) (M=Au, Ag, Cu) complexes, via salt metathesis, as isolable, crystalline solids. Notably, these reactions avoid the facile single electron transfer chemistry reported with the less bulky ligand systems. The X-ray structures revealed that they are two-coordinate metal adducts. The M-N and M-P bond distances are longest in the silver and shortest in the copper adduct among the three group 11 family members. Computational analysis revealed an interesting stability dependence on steric bulk of the anionic pyridine (i. e., pyridyl borate) ligand. A comparison of structures and bonding of [4-(Ph3B)-2,6-Trip2Py]Au(PPh3) to pyridine and m-terphenyl complexes, {[2,6-Trip2Py]Au(PPh3)}[SbF6] and [2,6-Trip2Ph]Au(PPh3) are also provided. The Au(I) isocyanide complex, [4-(Ph3B)-2,6-Trip2Py]Au(CNBut) has been stabilized using the same anionic pyridylborate illustrating that it can support other gold-ligand moieties as well.

Lithium chloride selective ion-pair recognition by heteroditopic [2]rotaxanes

The first heteroditopic [2]rotaxane host systems capable of strong and selective binding of lithium chloride ion-pair species are described. Importantly, a cooperative 'switch on' mechanism was found to operate, in which complexation of a lithium metal cation enhances the halide anion affinity of the rotaxanes via a combination of favourable proximal electrostatic and preorganised allosteric effects. The mechanically bonded rotaxane host design features a macrocycle component possessing a 2,6-dialkoxy pyridyl cation binding motif and an isophthalamide anion binding group, as well as an axle component functionalised with either a halogen bonding (XB) iodotriazole or hydrogen bonding (HB) prototriazole moiety. Extensive quantitative 1H NMR titration studies in CD3CN/CDCl3 solvent mixtures determined enhanced ion-pair binding affinities for lithium halides over the corresponding sodium or potassium halide salts, with the axle prototriazole-containing HB rotaxane in particular demonstrating a marked selectivity for lithium chloride. Solid-state X-ray crystallographic studies and computational DFT investigations provide evidence for a [2]rotaxane host axle-separated ion-pair binding mode, in which complementary cation and anion binding motifs from both the macrocycle and axle components act convergently to recognise each of the charged guest species.

Synthesis and reduction of [(C5H4SiMe3)2Ln(μ-OR)]2 (Ln = La, Ce) complexes: structural effects of bridging alkoxides

Alcoholysis of Cp'3Ln (Ln = La, Ce; Cp' = C5H4SiMe3) generate high-yielding (72-97%) bimetallic LnIII complexes of [Cp'2Ln(μ-OR)]2 [R = Et, iPr, or C6H4-4-tBu]. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction of these complexes reveal unexpected decreases in Ln⋯Ln distances, increasing Cpcent-Ln-Cpcent angles, and increasing intermolecular C⋯C contacts with bulkier bridging alkoxides, in line with structural control driven by significant dispersion forces. 1H NMR spectroscopy of [Cp'2Ce(μ-OEt)]2 and [Cp'2Ce(μ-OiPr)]2 revealed significantly upfield resonances assigned as methylene and methine moieties of -43.74 and -70.85 ppm, respectively. 2D 1H DOSY NMR experiments of [Cp'2Ce(μ-OiPr)]2 in C6D6 supported a dimeric structure in solution, including in the presence of a Lewis base (i.e., THF). Reduction of [Cp'2La(μ-OiPr)]2 using KC8 in the presence of 2.2.2-cryptand at -78 °C generated a purple solution and X-band EPR spectroscopy revealed an eight-line hyperfine pattern indicative of a LaII species.

A combined solid state, solution and DFT study of a dimethyl-cyclen-Pd(II) complex

A new palladium(II) complex containing the previously synthesized 4,10-bis[(3-hydroxy-4-pyron-2-yl)methyl]-1,7-dimethyl-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane ligand maltonis was prepared and characterized both in solution and in the solid state. Hirshfeld surface and energy framework analyses were also performed. Because maltonis already showed antineoplastic activity, the complexation of Pd(II), chosen as an alternative to Pt(II), was investigated to study its possible biological activity. UV-vis and NMR studies confirmed the formation and stability of the complex in aqueous solution at physiological pH. X-ray diffraction data revealed a structure where the Pd(II) ion is lodged in the dimethyl-cyclen cavity, with maltol rings facing each other (closed shape) even if they are not involved in the coordination. DFT analysis was performed in order to understand the most stable shape of the complex. In view of evaluating its possible bioactive conformation, the DFT study suggested a slight energetic preference for the closed one. The resulting closed complex was stabilized in the X-ray structure by intermolecular interactions that replace the intramolecular interactions present in the optimized complex. According to the DFT calculated formation energies, notwithstanding its rarity, the Pd(II) complex of maltonis is the thermodynamically preferred one among analogous complexes containing different metal ions (Pt(II), Co(II), and Cu(II)). Finally, to study its possible biological activity, the interaction between the Pd(II) complex of maltonis and nucleosides was evaluated through NMR and DFT calculations, revealing a possible interaction with purines via the maltol moieties.

Slow magnetic relaxation in a heteroleptic anilate-based DyIII metal-organic framework

Novel heteroleptic anilate-based lanthanide MOFs (LnIII = Tb, Dy, Ho) have been obtained under hydrothermal conditions by the ancillary ligand synthetic strategy. These structurally isomorphous species contain octacoordinated LnIII ions with coordination polyhedra approaching an ideal D2d symmetry, best described by a distorted biaugmented trigonal prismatic C2v geometry. In the whole series, only the Dy-MOF exhibits SMM behaviour.

Ba15Zr14Te42: a new complex ternary telluride structure with low thermal conductivity

Heavier metal-based tellurides with complex structures are of great interest for thermoelectric (TE) applications. Herein, we report the synthesis of a new telluride Ba15Zr14Te42 using high-temperature reactions of elements. Our single-crystal X-ray diffraction study reveals that it crystallizes in the space group R3̄c of the trigonal crystal system and is isostructural to its Se analogue Ba15Zr14Se42 complex. The unit cell of the structure accommodates 426 atoms with cell dimensions of a = b = 13.2666(10) Å, c = 96.195(9) Å, and V = 14 662(3) Å3. This structure consists of 18 unique crystallographic atoms (3 × Ba, 8 × Zr, and 7 × Te). The bonding of Zr and Te atoms creates chains of ∞1[Zr14Te42]30-, which are separated by the Ba2+ cations. Although all the Zr atoms have a coordination number of 6, they form two types of coordination polyhedra by bonding with six Te atoms: slightly distorted octahedral and trigonal prisms of ZrTe6. We have synthesized polycrystalline Ba15Zr14Q42 (Q = Se/Te) samples, which were characterized by optical absorption studies to reveal direct bandgaps of <0.5 eV for the Te analogue and 1.3(1) eV for the Se analogue. The lattice thermal conductivity (klat) values of the samples are ultralow: ∼0.46 W mK-1 and ∼0.30 W mK-1 at 773 K for the Te and Se analogues, respectively. Temperature-dependent resistivity and thermopower studies were carried out for the Ba15Zr14Te42, which showed the p-type degenerate semiconducting nature of the sample at high temperatures. The theoretical DFT studies predict a bandgap of 0.14 eV for the Ba15Zr14Te42 phase.

Nickel(II) complexes with 14-membered bis-thiosemicarbazide and bis-isothiosemicarbazide ligands: synthesis, characterization and catalysis of oxygen evolution reaction

Design and development of novel, low-cost and efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline media is crucial for lowering the reaction overpotential and thus decreasing the energy input during the water electrolysis process. Herein, we present the synthesis of new 14-membered bis-thiosemicarbazide and bis-isothiosemicarbazide macrocycles and their nickel(II) complexes characterized by spectroscopic techniques (1H and 13C NMR, IR, UV-vis), electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, single crystal X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX) and cyclic voltammetry. Finally, the activity of nickel(II) complexes towards OER is reported. NiIILSEt delivered a current density of 10 mA cm-2 at the lowest overpotential of 350 mV with the lowest Tafel slope of 93 mV dec-1. The high performance of NiIILSEt might be attributed to its high surface area and thus abundant active sites with the observed low charge-transfer resistance enabling the effective current flow through the electrocatalyst. Square-planar coordination geometry and increment in Ni oxidation state are believed to favor its OER performance. Beside high activity towards OER, NiIILSEt demonstrated excellent long-term stability with continuous operation, advocating its possible application in commercial systems.

Crystal Growth, Structure, and Diverse Magnetic Behaviors in Frustrated Triangular Lattice REBO3 (RE = Tb-Yb)

Triangular lattice (TL) materials are a rich playground for investigating exotic quantum spin states and related applications in quantum computing and quantum information. Millimeter-level single crystals of REBO3 (RE = Tb-Yb) with a nearly perfect RE-based TL have been successfully grown via a high-temperature flux method and structurally characterized via single-crystal X-ray diffraction. These 113-type materials crystallize in a monoclinic crystal system with a C2/c space group. Anisotropic magnetism and dominant antiferromagnetic interactions are found for the above materials based on DC magnetic susceptibility measurements. The comprehensive low-temperature specific heat data of REBO3 (RE = Tb-Tm) are characterized on single crystals for the first time, which exhibit diverse magnetic behaviors. Specifically, two weak-field-induced transitions could be found in the case of DyBO3 based on the specific heat measurements. Our results suggest that REBO3 (RE = Tb-Yb) is a TL magnetic system for investigating potential quantum magnetism.

Dense Hydrated Magnesium Carbonate MgCO3·3H2O Phases

The study of the structural stability of carbonates under different pressure and temperature conditions is important for modeling the carbon budget in the Earth's interior and the stability of carbonation products of carbon capture and storage (CCS) solutions. In this work, we confirm the existence of the two dense polymorphs of the hydrated magnesium carbonate MgCO3·3H2O nesquehonite mineral previously reported, and we characterize their structures using synchrotron single-crystal X-ray diffraction at 3.1 and 11.6 GPa. Phase transitions entail the distortion and atomic rearrangement of the Mg-centered polyhedra and the tilting of the [CO3] carbonate units. In particular, the Mg coordination number increases from 6 in nesquehonite to 7 in the second high-pressure phase, while maintaining a topology based on complex MgCO3(H2O)2 chains. We also studied their vibrational behavior upon compression using Raman spectroscopy and complemented the experimental results with density-functional theory (DFT) calculations. The role played by hydrogen bonds in the compressibility and the polymorphism of this hydrated carbonate is also discussed.

Introduction of Niobium in the Chemistry of Octahedral Chalcogenide Clusters: Synthesis and Detailed Study of Compounds Based on Condensed and Discrete {Re5NbQ8} (Q = S or Se) Cores

It is known that niobium practically does not form cluster chalcogenide compounds of the {M6(μ3-Q8)} type, which are widespread in the chemistry of group 6 and 7 metals. This work reports the preparation of a series of polymeric and discrete niobium-containing heterometallic clusters based on the {Re5Nb(μ3-S8)} and {Re5Nb(μ3-Se8)} cores. The compounds were prepared by the high-temperature reaction between rhenium and niobium dichalcogenides in a KCN melt. The 1D polymers K5[Re5NbQ8(CN)5] (Q = S or Se), which were formed as a result of the reaction, crystallize in the structural type of K6[Mo6Se8(CN)5], similar to the previously reported heterometallic clusters K6[Re6-xMoxQ8(CN)5] (x = 2-3). The polymers were solubilized to form discrete anionic clusters [Re5NbQ8(CN)6]4-. The structure and properties of the new clusters were investigated using a combination of X-ray diffraction analysis, UV/vis spectroscopy, high-resolution electrospray mass spectrometry, cyclic voltammetry, and DFT calculations. Among other features, the compounds showed high electrochemical activity, being able to form three redox states in solution with reversible transitions. It was found that redox potentials of the isoelectronic octahedral clusters demonstrate a strong cathodic shift in the sequence [Re5OsSe8(CN)6]3- > [Re6Se8(CN)6]4- > [Re5MoSe8(CN)6]5- > [Re5NbSe8(CN)6]6-, illustrating the effect of systematic changes in the composition of octahedral cluster cores on their properties.

Triple-Decker Hexaazamacrocyclic Lanthanide(III) Complexes: Structure, Magnetic Properties, and Temperature-Dependent Luminescence

The reaction of fluoride anions with mononuclear rare-earth(III) complexes of the hexaazamacrocycle derived from 2,6-diformylpyridine and ethylenediamine affords trinuclear coordination compounds [Ln3L3(μ2-F)4(NO3)2](NO3)3. The X-ray crystal structures of these complexes show triplex cationic complexes where the three roughly parallel macrocyclic lanthanide(III) units are linked by bis-μ2-F bridges. The detailed analysis of the photophysical properties of the [Eu3L3(μ2-F)4(NO3)2](NO3)3·2H2O and [Tb3L3(μ2-F)4(NO3)2](NO3)3·3H2O complexes reveals different temperature dependence of luminescence intensity and luminescence decay time of the Eu(III) and Tb(III) derivatives. The spectra of mixed species of average composition [Eu1.5Tb1.5L3(μ2-F)4(NO3)2](NO3)3·3H2O are in accordance with the ratiometric luminescent thermometer behavior. Measurements of the direct-current (dc) magnetic susceptibility of the [Dy3L3(μ2-F)4(NO3)2](NO3)3·2H2O complex indicate possible ferromagnetic interactions between the Dy(III) ions. Alternating current (ac) susceptibility measurements of this complex indicate single-molecule magnet behavior in zero dc field with magnetic relaxation dominated by Orbach mechanism and an effective energy barrier Ueff = 12.3 cm-1 (17.7 K) with a pre-exponential relaxation time, τ0 of 7.3 × 10-6 s. A similar reaction of mononuclear macrocyclic complexes with a higher number of fluoride equivalents results in polymeric {[Ln3L3(μ2-F)5](NO3)4}n complexes. The X-ray crystal structure of the Nd(III) derivative of this type shows trinuclear units that are additionally linked by single fluoride bridges to form a linear coordination polymer.

High-Pressure oC16-YBr3 Polymorph Recoverable to Ambient Conditions: From 3D Framework to Layered Material

Exfoliation of graphite and the discovery of the unique properties of graphene─graphite's single layer─have raised significant attention to layered compounds as potential precursors to 2D materials with applications in optoelectronics, spintronics, sensors, and solar cells. In this work, a new orthorhombic polymorph of yttrium bromide, oC16-YBr3 was synthesized from yttrium and CBr4 in a laser-heated diamond anvil cell at 45 GPa and 3000 K. The structure of oC16-YBr3 was solved and refined using in situ synchrotron single-crystal X-ray diffraction. At high pressure, it can be described as a 3D framework of YBr9 polyhedra, but upon decompression below 15 GPa, the structure motif changes to layered, with layers comprising edge-sharing YBr8 polyhedra weakly bonded by van der Waals interactions. The layered oC16-YBr3 material can be recovered to ambient conditions, and according to Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof-density functional theory calculations, it exhibits semiconductor properties with a band gap that is highly sensitive to pressure. This polymorph possesses a low exfoliation energy of 0.30 J/m2. Our results expand the list of layered trivalent rare-earth metal halides and provide insights into how high pressure alters their structural motifs and physical properties.

From d8 to d1: Iron(0) and Iron(I) Complexes Complete the Series of Eight Fe Oxidation States within the TIMMNMes Ligand Framework

Reduction of the ferrous precursor [(TIMMNMes)Fe(Cl)]+ (1) (TIMMNMes = tris-[(3-mesitylimidazol-2-ylidene)methyl]amine) to the low-valent iron(0) complex [(TIMMNMes)Fe(CO)3] (2) is presented, where the tris(N-heterocyclic carbene) (NHC) ligand framework remains intact, yet the coordination mode changed from 3-fold to 2-fold coordination of the carbene arms. Further, the corresponding iron(I) complexes [(TIMMNMes)Fe(L)]+ (L = free site, η1-N2, CO, py) (3) are synthesized and fully characterized. Complexes 1-3 demonstrate the notable steric and electronic flexibility of the TIMMNMes ligand framework by variation of the Fe-N anchor and Fe-carbene distances and the variable size of the axial cavity occupation. This is further underpinned by the oxidation of 3-N2 in a reaction with benzophenone to yield the corresponding, charge-separated iron(II) radical complex [(TIMMNMes)Fe(OCPh2)]+ (4). We found rather surprising similarities in the reactivity behavior when going to low- or high-valent oxidation states of the central iron ion. This is demonstrated by the closely related reactivity of 3-N2, where H atom abstraction with TEMPO triggers the formation of the metallacycle [(TIMMNMes*)Fe(py)]+ (5), and the reactivity of the highly unstable Fe(VII) nitride complex [(TIMMNMes)Fe(N)(F)]3+ to give the metallacyclic Fe(V) imido complex [(TIMMNMesN)Fe(NMes)(MeCN)]3+ (6) upon warming. Thus, the employed tris(carbene) chelate is not only capable of stabilizing the superoxidized Fe(VI) and Fe(VII) nitrides but equally supports the iron center in its low oxidation states 0 and +1. Isolation and characterization of these zero- and monovalent iron complexes demonstrate the extraordinary capability of the tris(carbene) chelate TIMMN to support iron in eight different oxidation states within the very same ligand platform.

K2HgGe3Se8: A Quaternary Hg-Based Selenide with Nonlinear Optical Properties

A new quaternary Hg-based selenide K2HgGe3Se8 was successfully synthesized and characterized as an engaging infrared (IR) nonlinear optical (NLO) material, which crystallizes in the P21 space group of the noncentrosymmetric monoclinic crystal system. The crystal structure of K2HgGe3Se8 is characterized by the stacking of countless [ H g G e 3 S e 8 ] 2 - ∞ 2 layers with K+ cations filling the interlayers. The UV-vis-NIR diffuse reflectance spectrum shows that K2HgGe3Se8 possesses an indirect band gap of 2.13 eV. The second harmonic generation (SHG) response of K2HgGe3Se8 is approximately 1.1 times that of AgGaS2 (AGS) within the particle size of 20-50 μm along with a nonphase-matching (NPM) behavior at 2090 nm, as indicated by the SHG test. K2HgGe3Se8 also has a large powder laser-induced damage threshold (∼ 2.3 × AGS). As revealed by theoretical calculations, the optical properties of K2HgGe3Se8 are predominantly determined by [HgSe4] and [GeSe4] tetrahedra, and K2HgGe3Se8 possesses a calculated optical band gap of 1.44 eV together with a maximum SHG coefficient d22 of -7.70 pm V-1.

Reactivity of [(Cp*CoPh)(Cp*Co)(μ-TePh)(μ-k2-Te,H-TeBH3)] Toward [M(CO)5·THF] (M = Mo and W), CS2, and [Fe2(CO)9]

Syntheses and structural elucidation of homo- and heterochalcogen-bridged complexes of cobalt are described. The photolytic reaction of bimetallic hydridoborate species [(Cp*CoPh)(Cp*Co)(μ-TePh)(μ-k2-Te,H-TeBH3)] (1) in the presence of [M(CO)5·THF] (M = Mo and W) afforded unprecedented tellurolate-bridged [(Cp*Co)2(μ-TePh)3]+[TePh{M(CO)5}2]- (M = Mo (2), W (3)) as ionic complexes with the release of BH3. Complex 2 has three bridged-TePh moieties between two Cp*Co fragments in the cation part, whereas the anionic part, [TePh{M(CO)5}2]-, shows a distorted trigonal pyramidal core. In order to synthesize mixed chalcogenate-bridged complexes having both S and Te, we carried out the photolytic reaction of 1 with CS2. Although the objective of generating mixed chalcogen-bridged complex [(Cp*Co)2(μ-TePh)2(μ-S)] was not achieved, the reaction yielded an unusual bimetallic thiotellurite complex [(Cp*Co)2(μ-S3TeS3-κ2S:κ2Te:κ2S')] (4). Complex 4 has two wings, each consisting of three sulfur atoms, that are connected to two Co-atoms and one Te-atom. Further, to synthesize the Fe analogue of 2 and 3, a similar reaction was carried out with [Fe2(CO)9]. However, the reaction led to the formation of the trimetallic complex [Cp*Co(CO)(μ3-Te)2{Fe2(CO)6}] (5). These complexes were characterized by employing different multinuclear NMR, IR spectroscopies, single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses, and mass spectrometry. Additionally, computational analyses of these chalcogen-bridged neutral and ionic complexes were conducted to offer insight into their bonding.

Multidimensional Hybrid Metal Phosphonate Coordination Networks as Synergistic Anticorrosion Coatings

In the technologically important field of anticorrosion coatings, it is imperative to form well-defined and characterized films to protect the metal surface from corrosion. Phosphonate-based corrosion mitigation approaches are currently being exploited. Herein, the synergistic action of alkaline-earth metal ions and two carboxy-diphosphonates, PAIBA [N,N-bis(phosphonomethyl)-2-aminoisobutyric acid] and BPMGLY [N,N-bis(phosphonomethyl)glycine], is explored. Also, a family of four novel hybrid metal phosphonate materials is reported, Mg-PAIBA, Ca-PAIBA, Sr-PAIBA, and Sr-Na-PAIBA, whose topological analysis revealed a variety of underlying networks with the 6,10T9, unc, SP 1-periodic net (4,4)(0,2), and unique topologies. The synergistic metal/carboxy-diphosphonate blends were tested for their anticorrosion performance on carbon steel at preselected concentrations (0.1-1.0 mM) and pH values (4.0-6.0). The results showed an enhanced inhibitory performance in the presence of metal cations at higher concentrations. The inhibition of corrosion at pH 5.0 in the presence of BPMGLY, PAIBA, and their combination with Sr2+ was investigated in detail using electrochemical measurements. Enhanced inhibition was achieved with a 1:1 Sr2+/BPMGLY (or PAIBA) binary system. Polarization curves indicated that the system is a "mixed" inhibitor. This study widens the family of carboxyphosphonate coordination polymers, showing their potential as attractive hybrid coatings with anticorrosion performance.

Cooperative spin crossover leading to bistable and multi-inert system states in an iron(III) complex

Cooperativity among spin centres has long been the royal road in spin crossover (SCO) research to impose magnetic bistability in terms of thermal hysteresis. In this work we access magnetic multi-inert states of the iron(III) compound {FeL2[B(Ph)4]} ≡ FeB at low temperature, in addition to thermal bistability. The packing of the low-spin and high-spin forms of crystalline FeB differs only marginally what ultimately leads to structural conservatism. This indicates that the SCO-immanent breathing of the complex cation is almost fully compensated by the anion matrix. The unique cooling rate dependence of the residual low-temperature magnetisation in FeB unveils continuous switching between the trapped high-spin (ON) and the relaxed low-spin state (OFF). The macroscopic ratio of the spin states (ON:OFF) can be adjusted as a simple function of the cooling rate. That is, cooperative spin crossover can be the source of bistable and multi-inert system states in the very same material.

Combined Effect of Hydrophilic Pore and the Type of Protons on Proton Conductivity in Porous Metal-Organic Frameworks: A Feasible Approach to Achieve a Super Proton Conductor under Hydrated Conditions

There has been a steady growth of interest in proton-conductive metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) due to their potential utility in proton-exchange membrane fuel cells. To attain a super proton conductivity (>1 × 10-2 S cm-1) in a MOF-based proton conductor is a key step toward practical application. Currently, most studies are focused on enhancing the proton conductivity of porous MOFs by controlling a single factor, such as the type of protons or hydrophilic pore or hydrogen bond. However, a limited contribution from a single factor cannot afford to remarkably increase the proton conductivity of the MOF and form a super proton conductor. Herein, we constructed two distinct porous MOFs, {(H3O+)4[Cu12(ci)12(OH)4(H2O)12]·3H2O·9DMF} (Cu-ci-3D, H2ci = 1H-indazole-5-carboxylic acid, DMF = N,N'-dimethylformamide) and {[Co(Hppca)2]·2HN(CH3)2·CH3OH·2H2O} (Co-ppca-2D, H2ppca = 5-(pyridin-3-yl)-1H-pyrazole-3-carboxylic acid), to tune their proton conductivities at high relative humidity (RH) using the combined effect of hydrophilic pore and the type of protons, ultimately achieving super proton conduction. Excitingly, Cu-ci-3D indeed harvests a super proton conductivity of 1.37 × 10-2 S cm-1 at 353 K and ∼97% RH, superior to some previously reported MOF-based proton conductors. The results present a unique perspective for developing high-performance MOF-based proton conductors and understanding their structure-performance relationships.

Structural Elucidation and Absolute Stereochemistry for Pharma Compounds Using MicroED

Microcrystal electron diffraction (microED) is an emerging technique for rapid crystallographic analysis of small molecule micro- and nanocrystals. In this report, we evaluate the applicability of microED to pharmaceutical compounds through the analysis of 30 samples obtained from the process and medicinal chemistry groups at Amgen Inc. Using only 40 h of microscope time, 15 of 30 crystal structures were elucidated. From these crystal structures, all chiral compounds had the correct absolute stereochemistry assigned by dynamical refinement of continuous rotation electron diffraction data, confirming dynamical refinement as a promising tool for the absolute stereochemistry determination of pharmaceutically relevant compounds.

Construction of intermolecular σ-hole interactions in rare earth metallocene complexes using a 2,3,4,5-tetraiodopyrrolyl anion

The generation of noncovalent intermolecular interactions represents a powerful method to control molecular vibrations and rotations. Combining these with the axial ligand field enforced by the metallocene ligand scaffold provides a dual-pronged approach in controlling the magnetic-relaxation pathways for dysprosium-based single-molecule magnets (SMMs). Here, we present the first implementation of 2,3,4,5-tetraiodopyrrole (TIPH) in its anionic form [TIP]- as a ligand in three isostructural rare-earth metal complexes Cp*2RE(TIP) (1-RE, RE = Y, Gd, and Dy; Cp* = pentamethylcylopentadienyl), where the TIP ligand binds through the nitrogen and one iodine atom κ2(N,I) to the metal centre. The shallow potential energy surface of the intermolecular σ-hole interaction yields distortions of the interatomic distances at elevated temperatures which were investigated by variable-temperature SCXRD. 1-RE constitute the first crystallographically characterized molecules containing TIP as a ligand for any metal ion, and 1-Dy is the first SMM that employs the TIP ligand. The structural dependence on temperature allowed the mechanism of magnetic relaxation to be explored through ab initio calculations at different temperatures. The electronic influence of the coordinated iodine substituent was probed via magnetometry and cw-EPR spectroscopy on 1-Gd. To further scrutinize the impact of the iodine substituents on the physical properties, a second set of new complexes Cp*2RE(DMP) (2-RE, RE = Y, and Dy) where DMP = 2,5-dimethylpyrrolyl were synthesized. Here, the DMP ligand binds similarly to the TIP ligand and represents an all-hydrocarbon analogue to 1-RE. 2-Dy constitutes the first SMM bearing a DMP ligand.

Out-of-equilibrium dynamics of a grid-like Fe(ii) spin crossover dimer triggered by a two-photon excitation

The application of two-photon excitation (TPE) in the study of light-responsive materials holds immense potential due to its deeper penetration and reduced photodamage. Despite these benefits, TPE has been underutilised in the investigation of the photoinduced spin crossover (SCO) phenomenon. Here, we employ TPE to delve into the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of a SCO FeII dimer of the form [FeII(HL)2]2(BF4)4·2MeCN (HL = 3,5-bis{6-(2,2'-bipyridyl)}pyrazole). Optical transient absorption (OTA) spectroscopy in solution proves that the same dynamics take place under both one-photon excitation (OPE) and TPE. The results show the emergence of the photoinduced high spin state in less than 2 ps and with a lifetime of 147 ns. Time-resolved photocrystallography (TRXRD) reveals a single molecular reorganisation within the first 500 ps following TPE. Additionally, variable temperature single crystal X-ray diffraction (VTSCXRD) and magnetic susceptibility measurements confirm that the thermal transition is silenced by the solvent. While the results of the OTA and TRXRD utilising TPE are intriguing, the high pump fluencies required to excite enough metal centres to the high spin state may impair its practical application. Nonetheless, this study sheds light on the potential of TPE for the investigation of the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of SCO complexes.

Insights into the nucleation and growth of BiOCl nanoparticles by in situ X-ray pair distribution function analysis and in situ liquid cell TEM

The synthesis of bismuth oxyhalides as defined nanostructures is hindered by their fast nucleation and growth in aqueous solutions. Using our recently developed single-source precursor, the formation of bismuth oxychloride in such solutions can be slowed significantly. As reported herein, this advance enables BiOCl formation to be investigated by in situ X-ray total scattering and in situ liquid cell transmission electron microscopy. In situ pair distribution function analysis of X-ray total scattering data reveals the local order of atomic structures throughout the synthesis, while in situ liquid cell transmission electron microscopy allows for tracking the growth of individual nanoparticles. Through this work, the precursor complex is shown to give rise to BiOCl upon heating in solution without the observation of structurally distinct intermediates. The emerging nanoparticles have a widened interlayer spacing, which moderately decreases as the particles grow. Mechanistic insights into the formation of bismuth oxyhalide nanoparticles, including the absence of distinct intermediates within the available time resolution, will help facilitate future design of controlled BiOX nanostructures.

Palladium(II)-Indenyl Complexes Bearing N-Heterocyclic Carbene (NHC) Ligands as Potent and Selective Metallodrugs toward High-Grade Serous Ovarian Cancer Models

In this study, we synthesized novel Pd(II)-indenyl complexes using various N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands, including chelating NHC-picolyl, NHC-thioether, and diNHC ligands, and two monodentate NHCs. Transmetalation reactions between a Pd(II)-indenyl precursor and silver-NHC complexes were generally employed, except for chelating diNHC derivatives, which required direct reaction with bisimidazolium salts and potassium carbonate. Characterization included NMR, HRMS analysis, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In vitro on five ovarian cancer cell lines showed notable cytotoxicity, with IC50 values in the micro- and submicromolar range. Some compounds exhibited intriguing selectivity for cancer cells due to higher tumor cell uptake. Mechanistic studies revealed that monodentate NHCs induced mitochondrial damage while chelating ligands caused DNA damage. One chelating NHC-picolyl ligand showed promising cytotoxicity and selectivity in high-grade serous ovarian cancer models, supporting its consideration for preclinical study.

Synthesis and evaluation of isothiazolo[4,5-b]pyridines as cyclin G-associated kinase (GAK) inhibitors

Isothiazolo[4,3-b]pyridines have been extensively explored as inhibitors of cyclin G-associated kinase (GAK). In order to expand the structure-activity relationship study and to discover other chemotypes that act as GAK inhibitors, the closely related isothiazolo[4,5-b]pyridine scaffold was explored. An easy and efficient synthetic procedure to access 3,5- and 3,6-dihalogenated isothiazolo[4,5-b]pyridines as key building blocks was developed. Regioselective functionalization with various substituents was performed. None of the newly synthesized isothiazolo[4,5-b]pyridines were active as GAK inhibitors. Molecular modeling was applied to rationalise their inactivity as GAK binders.

Co(II) Macrocyclic Complexes with Amide-Glycinate Pendants as ParaCEST and Liposomal CEST Agents

Macrocyclic Co(II) complexes with appended amide-glycinate groups were prepared to develop paramagnetic Co(II) chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST) agents of reduced overall charge. Complexes with reduced charge and lowered osmolarity are important for their loading into liposomes and to provide complexes that are highly water soluble and well tolerated in animals. Co(L1) has two non-coordinating benzyl groups and two amide-glycinate pendants, whereas Co(L2) has two unsubstituted amide pendants and two amide-glycinate pendants on cyclam (1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclododecane). The 1H NMR spectrum of Co(L1) is consistent with a single cis-pendant isomer with both amide protons in the trans-configuration, as supported by an X-ray crystal structure. Co(L2) has a mixture of different isomers in solution, including the trans-1,4 and 1,8 pendant isomers. The Z-spectrum of Co(L1) shows one highly-shifted CEST peak, whereas Co(L2) exhibits six CEST peaks. Encapsulation of 40 mM Co(L1) in a liposome with osmotically-induced shrinking at 300 mOsm/L produces a liposomal CEST agent with saturation frequency offset of 3 ppm. Addition of the amphiphilic 1,4,7-triazacyclononane-based complex Co(L5) to the liposomal bilayer at 18 mM with Co(L1) encapsulated in the liposome at 50 mM changes the sign and increases the magnitude of the saturation frequency offset to -7.5 ppm at 300 mOsm/L.

Multifaceted exploration of acylthiourea compounds: In vitro cytotoxicity, DFT calculations, molecular docking and dynamics simulation studies

This study reports the synthesis and analysis of biologically active acylthiourea compounds (1 and 2) with a cyclohexyl moiety. The compounds were characterized using UV-Visible, FT-IR, 1H/13C NMR, and elemental analysis. The crystal structure of 2 was solved, revealing intra- and inter-molecular hydrogen bonds. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations provided insights into chemical reactivity and non-covalent interactions. Cytotoxicity assays showed the cyclohexyl group enhanced the activity of compound 2 compared to compound 1. Epoxide hydrolase 1 was predicted as the enzyme target for both compounds. We modeled the structure of epoxide hydrolase 1 and performed molecular dynamics simulation and docking studies. Additionally, in silico docking with SARS-CoV-2 main protease, human ACE2, and avian influenza H5N1 hemagglutinin indicated strong binding potential of the compounds. This integrated approach improves our understanding of the biological potential of acylthiourea derivatives.

Cation-Stacking Approach Enabling Interconversion between Bis(xanthylium) and its Reduced Species

Cyclophane-type dications with two units of xanthylium were designed, with the expectation that intramolecular interaction between cation units could induce changes in absorption and redox behavior. The desired dications were synthesized via the macrocyclic diketone as a key intermediate, which was efficiently obtained by a stepwise etherification. X-ray and UV/Vis measurements revealed that the cyclophane-type dications adopt a stacking structure in both the crystal and solution. Due to the intramolecular interaction caused by π-π stacking of the xanthylium units, a considerable blue shift compared to the corresponding monocations and a two-stage one-electron reduction process were observed in the dications. Furthermore, upon electrochemical reduction of dications, the formation of biradicals via radical cation species was demonstrated by UV/Vis spectroscopy with several isosbestic points at both stages. Therefore, the cation-stacking approach is a promising way to provide novel properties due to perturbation of their molecular orbitals and to stabilize the reduced species even though they have open-shell characters.

Ambiguous Faces of Water-Based Inclusion Compounds: L4(4)8(8) Intercalato-Clathrate Hydrate of Pt(II) Complex

Clathrate hydrates are among the most intensively studied H-bond inclusion compounds. Despite the broad definition for this class of compounds, their meaning commonly refers to closed polyhedral nanocages that encapsulate small guest molecules. On the other hand, larger solutes enforce another type of encapsulation because of the solute size effect. Herein, we report a series of structures containing various molecules encapsulated by intercalated water layers constructed of polycyclic moieties of L4(4)8(8) topology. We parametrized the corrugation of individual layers and characterized interactions governing their formation. We suggested that these could be categorized as two-dimensional clathrates based on the character of intra-layer interactions and the effects observed between entrapped molecules and water-based intercalators.

Thallium-Fluorides Revisited: Crystal Chemistry of TlHF2, Tl2[MF6]·2TlF, and Tl2[MF6]·TlCl (M = Si and Ge)

Although the formation of thallium hydrogen fluorides TlHxFx+1 (x = 1, 1.5, 2, 3, 5, 6.5, and 7) from TlF and HF was reported in the 1970s, little is known about the corresponding crystal structures. To shed light on the crystal chemistry of the thallium fluorides, we reinvestigated the structure of α-TlHF2, which was obtained by crystallization of TlF from 50% HF at room temperature. We disclose that β-TlHF2 is isostructural with α-MHF2 (M = K, Rb, and Cs), γ-TlHF2 is isostructural with β-MHF2 (M = K and Rb), whereas α-TlHF2 crystallizes in an unusual structure type. During the reaction of TlHF2 with the glass of the microscope slide, crystals of the previously unknown compound Tl2[SiF6]·2TlF were formed. We disclose that the related Tl2[GeF6]·2TlF can be obtained by the crystallization of stoichiometric amounts of Tl2[GeF6] with TlF from water at room temperature. The crystal structures of α-TlHF2, Tl2[SiF6]·2TlF, Tl2[SiF6]·TlCl, Tl2[GeF6]·2TlF, Tl2[GeF6]·TlCl, and Tl2[GeF6] were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The crystal structures of α-TlF and Tl2[SiF6]·xTlF (x = 0, 1) were redetermined at low temperatures.
