Advanced applications of smart electrospun nanofibers in cancer therapy: With insight into material capabilities and electrospinning parameters

Cancer remains a major global health challenge, and despite available treatments, its prognosis remains poor. Recently, researchers have turned their attention to intelligent nanofibers for cancer drug delivery. These nanofibers exhibit remarkable capabilities in targeted and controlled drug release. Their inherent characteristics, such as a high surface area-to-volume ratio, make them attractive candidates for drug delivery applications. Smart nanofibers can release drugs in response to specific stimuli, including pH, temperature, magnetic fields, and light. This unique feature not only reduces side effects but also enhances the overall efficiency of drug delivery systems. Electrospinning, a widely used method, allows the precision fabrication of smart nanofibers. Its advantages include high efficiency, user-friendliness, and the ability to control various manufacturing parameters. In this review, we explore the latest developments in producing smart electrospun nanofibers for cancer treatment. Additionally, we discuss the materials used in manufacturing these nanofibers and the critical parameters involved in the electrospinning process.

An injectable self-healing alginate hydrogel with desirable mechanical and degradation properties for enhancing osteochondral regeneration

Articular cartilage and subchondral bone defects have always been problematic because the osteochondral tissue plays a crucial role in the movement of the body and does not recover spontaneously. Here, an injectable hydrogel composed of oxidized sodium alginate/gelatin/chondroitin sulfate (OSAGC) was designed for the minimally invasive treatment and promotion of osteochondral regeneration. The OSAGC hydrogel had a double network based on dynamic covalent bonds, demonstrating commendable injectability and self-healing properties. Chondroitin sulfate was organically bound to the hydrogel network, retaining its own activity and gradually releasing during the degradation process as well as improving mechanical properties. The compressive strength could be increased up to 3 MPa by regulating the concentration of chondroitin sulphate and the oxidation level, and this mechanical stimulation could help repair injured tissue. The OSAGC hydrogel had a favourable affinity to articular cartilage and was able to release active ingredients in a sustained manner over 3 months. The OSAGC showed no cytotoxic effects. Results from animal studies demonstrated its capacity to regenerate new bone tissue in four weeks and new cartilage tissue in twelve weeks. The OSAGC hydrogel represented a promising approach to simplify bone surgery and repair damaged osteochondral tissue.

Monodisperse polyhydroxyalkanoate nanoparticles as self-sticky and bio-resorbable tissue adhesives

Monodisperse nanoparticles of biodegradable polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) polymers, copolymers of 3-hydroxybutyrate (3HB) and 4-hydroxybutyrate (4HB), are synthesized using a membrane-assisted emulsion encapsulation and evaporation process for biomedical resorbable adhesives. The precise control over the diameter of these PHA particles, ranging from 100 nm to 8 μm, is achieved by adjusting the diameter of emulsion or the PHA concentration. Mechanical properties of the particles can be tailored based on the 3HB to 4HB ratio and molecular weight, primarily influenced by the level of crystallinity. These monodisperse PHA particles in solution serve as adhesives for hydrogel systems, specifically those based on poly(N, N-dimethylacrylamide) (PDMA). Semi-crystalline PHA nanoparticles exhibit stronger adhesion energy than their amorphous counterparts. Due to their self-adhesiveness, adhesion energy increases even when those PHA nanoparticles form multilayers between hydrogels. Furthermore, as they degrade and are resorbed into the body, the PHA nanoparticles demonstrate efficacy in in vivo wound closure, underscoring their considerable impact on biomedical applications.

Structure characterization and gelling properties of RG-I-enriched pectins extracted from citrus peels using four different methods

To facilitate the application of rhamnogalacturonan-I (RG-I)-enriched pectins (RGPs) as novel, healthy, and gelling food additives, this study compared the structural characteristics and gelling properties of RGPs extracted from citrus peel via four methods (alkali: AK, high-temperature/pressure: TP, citric acid: CA, and enzyme-assisted: EA extractions). AK and CA yielded pectins with the highest RG-I proportions (54.8 % and 51.9 %, respectively) by disrupting the homogalacturonan region; TP and EA increased the RG-I proportions by ~10 %. Among the four methods, AK induced the lowest degree of esterification (DE) (6.7 %) and longer side chains that form strong entanglement, contributing to its highest gel hardness. The relatively low DE (18.5 %) of CA RGP facilitated stable gel formation. Notably, its highly branched RG-I region afforded more intramolecular hydrophobic interactions, making a more highly cross-linked gel network of better gel resilience. In contrast, TP induced the highest DE (57 %) and curved molecular chains; it inhibited Ca2+ binding, entanglement, and intramolecular hydrophobic interactions, and thus no gel formed. EA RGP was associated with the lowest molecular size, rendering it more difficult for Ca2+ to form links, which resulted no gel. These findings offer insights into the relationship among the extraction methods, molecular structures, and gelling properties of RGPs.

From farm to function: Exploring new possibilities with jute nanocellulose applications

Recent scientific interest has surged in the application of bioresources within nanotechnology, primarily because of their eco-friendly nature, wide availability, and cost-effectiveness. Jute is globally recognized as the second most prevalent source of natural cellulose fibers, and it produces a significant quantity of jute sticks as a byproduct. Nanocellulose (NC), which includes cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), exhibits exceptional properties such as high strength, toughness, crystallinity, thermal stability, and stiffness. These attributes enable its versatile use across various sectors. The extensive surface areas and abundant hydroxyl groups of nanocellulose allow for diverse surface modifications, facilitating the design of advanced functional materials. This comprehensive review provides an overview of recent advancements in the synthesis, characterization, and potential applications of nanocellulose derived from jute. As a versatile natural fiber, jute holds immense potential across various research domains, including nanocellulose synthesis, scaffold fabrication, nanocarbon material preparation, life sciences, electronics and energy storage devices, drug delivery systems, nanomaterial synthesis, food packaging and paper industries. Additionally, its use extends to polymeric nanocomposites, sensors, and coatings. This study summarizes the extensive utilization of jute, emphasizing its versatility and potential across diverse research fields.

Cellulose derivatives as environmentally-friendly additives in water-based drilling fluids: A review

The application of cellulose derivatives including carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), polyanionic cellulose (PAC), hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC), cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs), and cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) has gained enormous interest, especially as environmentally friendly additives for water-based drilling fluids (WBDFs). This is due to their sustainable, biodegradable, and biocompatible nature. Furthermore, cellulose nanomaterials (CNMs), which include both CNFs and CNCs, possess unique properties such as nanoscale dimensions, a large surface area, as well as unique mechanical, thermal, and rheological performance that makes them stand out as compared to other additives used in WBDFs. The high surface hydration capacity, strong interaction with bentonite, and the presence of a complex network within the structure of CNMs enable them to act as efficient rheological modifiers in WBDFs. Moreover, the nano-size dimension and facilely tunable surface chemistry of CNMs make them suitable as effective fluid loss reducers as well as shale inhibitors as they have the ability to penetrate, absorb, and plug the nanopores within the exposed formation and prevent further penetration of water into the formation. This review provides an overview of recent progress in the application of cellulose derivatives, including CMC, PAC, HEC, CNFs, and CNCs, as additives in WBDFs. It begins with a discussion of the structure and synthesis of cellulose derivatives, followed by their specific application as rheological, fluid loss reducer, and shale inhibition additives in WBDFs. Finally, the challenges and future perspectives are outlined to guide further research and development in the effective utilization of cellulose derivatives as additives in WBDFs.

pH-responsive membranes: Mechanisms, fabrications, and applications

Understanding the mechanisms of pH-responsiveness allows researchers to design and fabricate membranes with specific functionalities for various applications. The pH-responsive membranes (PRMs) are particular categories of membranes that have an amazing aptitude to change their properties such as permeability, selectivity and surface charge in response to changes in pH levels. This review provides a brief introduction to mechanisms of pH-responsiveness in polymers and categorizes the applied polymers and functional groups. After that, different techniques for fabricating pH-responsive membranes such as grafting, the blending of pH-responsive polymers/microgels/nanomaterials, novel polymers and graphene-layered PRMs are discussed. The application of PRMs in different processes such as filtration membranes, reverse osmosis, drug delivery, gas separation, pervaporation and self-cleaning/antifouling properties with perspective to the challenges and future progress are reviewed. Lastly, the development and limitations of PRM fabrications and applications are compared to provide inclusive information for the advancement of next-generation PRMs with improved separation and filtration performance.

Novel insights into the mechanism of dynamic changes in microstructure and physicochemical properties of corn straw pretreated by ball milling and feasibility analysis of anaerobic digestion

In this study, the effects of Ball milling (BM) pretreatment (0-240 min) on the microstructure, physicochemical properties and subsequent methanogenesis performance of corn straw (CS) were explored, and the feasibility analysis was carried out. The results showed that BM pretreatment destroyed the dense structure of the CS, and the particle size was significantly reduced (D50: 13.85 μm), transforming it into a cell-scale granular form. The number of mesopores increased, the pore volume (PV) (0.032 cm3/g) and specific surface area (SSA) (4.738 m2/g) considerably increased, and the water-absorbent property was improved. The crystalline order of cellulose was disrupted and the crystallinity (CrI) (8.61 %) and crystal size (CrS) (3.37) were remarkably reduced. The cross-links between lignocelluloses were broken, and the relative content and functional groups did not alter obviously. The bulk density (BD), repose angle (RA) and slip angle (SA) dramatically increased. As a result, CS was more readily accessible, attached and utilized by microorganisms and enzymes, causing the hydrolysis and acidification of AD to be greatly facilitated. Compared with the untreated group, the cumulative methane production (CMP) increased by 35.83 %-101.97 %, and the lag phase time (λ) was shortened by 33.04 %-71.17 %. The results of redundancy analysis, Pearson analysis and Mantel test showed that BM pretreatment affects the process of AD by changing the physicochemical factors of CS. The normalization analysis showed that particle size (D90) and BD can be used as direct indicators to evaluate the performance of AD and predict the threshold of biodegradation of CS. Energy analysis and energy conversion assessment showed that BM is a green and efficient AD pretreatment strategy. This result provides a theoretical basis for the industrial application of BM pretreatment towards more energy-efficient and sustainable development.

Production and physico-chemical characterization of nano-sized collagen from equine tendon

In recent years, significant academic and commercial interest has focused on collagen derived from horse tendons, with potential applications across diverse sectors such as medicine, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. Nano collagen, with its enhanced wound penetration, improved cell contact, and heightened cellular regeneration and repair capabilities due to its high surface area, holds promise for a wide range of applications. In this study, we present a novel method for producing nano collagen from the equine tendon. Our approach is characterized by its speed, affordability, simplicity and environmentally friendly nature, with precise temperature-control to prevent collagen denaturation. We conducted a comprehensive characterization of the obtained samples, including assessments of morphology, chemical and thermal properties, particle size distribution and biocompatibility. Importantly, our results indicate improvements in thermal stability, and surface roughness of nano collagen, while preserving its molecular weight. These advancements expand the potential applications of nano collagen in various fields.

Trilayered nanocellulose-based patches loaded with acyclovir and hyaluronic acid for the treatment of herpetic lesions

This study focuses on the preparation of layered bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) patches for drug delivery and wound healing in the context of herpes labialis. Nanostructured patches were prepared by selective aqueous diffusion of acyclovir (ACV, antiviral drug), hyaluronic acid (HA, skin healing promoter), and glycerol (GLY, plasticizer and humectant) in the BNC network, followed by assembly into trilayered patches with ACV on the central layer of the patch (ACVT) or divided between two layers (ACVH), to modulate drug release. Both patches showed good layers' adhesion and thermal stability (125 °C), UV barrier properties, good static (Young's modulus up to 0.9 GPa (dry) and 0.7 GPa (wet)) and dynamic mechanical performance, and adhesion strength (21 kPa) comparable to or higher than other materials and commercial adhesives for wound healing. In vitro drug dissolution showed faster ACV release from the ACVH patch (77 ± 5 %, 10 min) than from the ACVT one (50 ± 7 %), suggesting efficient drug delivery. ACVH closely resembled a commercial cream formulation in terms of release and permeation profiles. The patches were non-cytotoxic toward L929 fibroblasts, promoting cell adhesion and wound closure (in vitro). These results underscore the dual-action potential of the layered patches for managing herpetic lesions.

A carboxymethyl-resistant starch/polyacrylic acid semi-IPN hydrogel with excellent adhesive and antibacterial properties for peri-implantitis prevention

Hydrogels possess inherent characteristics that render them promising for the prevention of peri-implantitis. Nonetheless, hydrogels with singular network structures are incapable of concurrently achieving the desired adhesion and mechanical properties. In this work, a carboxymethyl resistant starch/polyacrylic acid semi-interpenetrating (CMRS/PAA semi-IPN) hydrogel was successfully prepared in one step. Its morphology, structure, mechanical properties, and adhesion properties were systematically assessed, which revealed a homogeneously porous structure with a commendable mechanical strength of 67.317 kPa and an adhesion strength of 63 kPa. Ciprofloxacin (Cip) was loaded in the CMRS/PAA hydrogel via in situ compounding. The in vitro kinetic study of drug release shows that the slow drug release efficiency exceeds 90 % in the weakly acidic microenvironment at the infection site after 72 h, indicating enhanced antimicrobial properties. The Cip-loaded hydrogel also exhibits a remarkable bacterial inhibition rate exceeding 99 % against the pathogenic bacterium P. gingivalis and good cytocompatibility and hemocompatibility in vitro. In summary, the current work explored a novel solution and direction for the development of anti-infective medical materials applicable to dental implants.

Polyaniline-based bovine serum albumin imprinted electrochemical sensor for ultra-trace-level detection in clinical and food safety applications

Monitoring bovine serum albumin (BSA) at ultra-low levels is crucial for clinical and food safety applications, as it plays a significant role in identifying various health conditions and potential risks, necessitating fast, trace-level detection of BSA. This study proposes an approach to address these challenges by employing molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) to develop an ultra-trace-level and cost-effective BSA sensing platform. The MIP electrochemical sensor was developed using polyaniline (PANI) combined with the protein crosslinker glutaraldehyde (GA) to optimize BSA surface imprinting in the MIP. As a result, the sensor achieves a sensitivity of 1.24 μA/log(pg/mL), with a picomolar detectable limit of 2.3 pg/mL (0.035 pM) and a wide detection range from 20 pg/mL to 200,000 pg/mL (0.303 pM to 3030 pM), making it suitable for clinical and food safety applications. Additionally, the study explores the interaction between an acidic surfactant protein eluent (acetic acid with sodium dodecyl sulfate, AcOH-SDS) and BSA vacant sites, enhancing recognition and re-binding. The PANI-based MIP sensor demonstrates initial feasibility and practicality in commercial milk and real human serum, opening avenues for early disease detection and ensuring food safety in BSA-related immune responses.

New powder reuse schema in laser-based powder bed fusion of polymers

The laser-based powder bed fusion of polymers (PBF-LB/P) process often utilizes a blend of powders with varying degrees of degradation. Specifically, for polyamide 12, the traditional reuse schema involves mixing post-processed powder with virgin powder at a predetermined ratio before reintroducing it to the process. Given that only about 15% of the powder is utilized in part production, and powders are refreshed in equal proportions, there arises a challenge with the incremental accumulation of material across build cycles. To mitigate the consumption of fresh powder relative to the actual material usage, this study introduces the incorporation of recycled material into the PBF-LB/P process. This new powder reuse schema is presented for the first time, focusing on the laser sintering process. The characteristics of the recycled powder were evaluated through scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction, particle size distribution, and dynamic powder flowability assessments. The findings reveal that waste powders can be effectively reused in PBF-LB/P to produce components with satisfactory mechanical properties, porosity levels, dimensional accuracy, and surface quality.

Polysaccharide base electrospun nanofibrous scaffolds for cartilage tissue engineering: Challenges and opportunities

Polysaccharides, known as naturally abundant macromolecular materials which can be easily modified chemically, have always attracted scientists' interest due to their outstanding properties in tissue engineering. Moreover, their intrinsic similarity to cartilage ECM components, biocompatibility, and non-harsh processing conditions make polysaccharides an excellent option for cartilage tissue engineering. Imitating the natural ECM structure to form a fibrous scaffold at the nanometer scale in order to recreate the optimal environment for cartilage regeneration has always been attractive for researchers in the past few years. However, there are some challenges for polysaccharides electrospun nanofibers preparation, such as poor solubility (Alginate, cellulose, chitin), high viscosity (alginate, chitosan, and Hyaluronic acid), high surface tension, etc. Several methods are reported in the literature for facing polysaccharide electrospinning issues, such as using carrier polymers, modification of polysaccharides, and using different solvent systems. In this review, considering the importance of polysaccharide-based electrospun nanofibers in cartilage tissue engineering applications, the main achievements in the past few years, and challenges for their electrospinning process are discussed. After careful investigation of reported studies in the last few years, alginate, chitosan, hyaluronic acid, chondroitin sulfate, and cellulose were chosen as the main polysaccharide base electrospun nanofibers used for cartilage regeneration.

Gel-confined fabrication of fully bio-based filtration membrane for green capture and rapid detection of airborne microbes

Air filtration has become a desirable route for collecting airborne microbes. However, the potential biotoxicity and sterilization of current air filtration membranes often lead to undesired inactivation of captured microbes, which greatly limits microbial non-traumatic transfer and recovery. Herein, we report a gel-confined phase separation strategy to rationally fabricate a fully bio-based filtration membrane (SGFM) using soluble soybean polysaccharide and gelatin. The versatile SGFM features fascinating honeycomb micro-nano architecture and hierarchical interconnected porous structures for microbial capture, and achieves a lower pressure drop, higher interception efficiency (99.3%), and superior microbial survivability than commercial gelatin filtration membranes. Particularly, the water-dissolvable SGFM can greatly simplify the elution and extraction process after bioaerosol sampling, thereby bringing about maximum sample transfer and vigorous recovery of collected microbes. Meanwhile, green capture coupled with ATP bioluminescence endows the SGFM with rapid and quantitative detection capability for airborne microbes. This work may pave the way for designing green protocols for the detection of bioaerosols.

Maltodextrin-modified graphene oxide composite membrane applied to the enantioseparation of amino acids

The separation of enantiomers using chiral membranes has garnered much research interest. In this study, the enantioseparation of amino acids using chiral membranes, namely graphene oxide-ethylenediamine-maltodextrin (GO-EDA-MD) and GO-EDA-hydroxypropyl-MD (GO-EDA-HP-MD), was evaluated. HP-MD and MD were investigated as chiral selectors due to their inherent chirality. Various characterization techniques, including atomic force microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, field emission scanning electron microscopy, water contact angle analysis, tensile properties, and thermal gravimetric analysis were employed to analyze the membrane structures. The evaluation of enantioseparation performance was conducted by employing tryptophan, phenylalanine, and tyrosine enantiomers. Optimal conditions for enantiomer separation were achived using a GO-EDA-HP-MD chiral composite (1.75 wt%), a feed concentration of 10 mg/L for each enantiomer, a separation time of 15 min, and a membrane effective surface area of 1.0 cm2. Also, the bovine serum albumin rejection was 90.0 %, and the water flux reached 37.1 L m-2 h-1. The highest enantiomeric excess (ee.%) values were 46.33 %, 76.97 %, and 73.04 % for tryptophan, phenylalanine, and tyrosine, respectively. The impact of voltage on ee.% and substance flux was also explored. This membrane was able to separate enantiomers successfully.

Lipid nanoparticle technology-mediated therapeutic gene manipulation in the eyes

Millions of people worldwide have hereditary genetic disorders, trauma, infectious diseases, or cancer of the eyes, and many of these eye diseases lead to irreversible blindness, which is a major public health burden. The eye is a relatively small and immune-privileged organ. The use of nucleic acid-based drugs to manipulate malfunctioning genes that target the root of ocular diseases is regarded as a therapeutic approach with great promise. However, there are still some challenges for utilizing nucleic acid therapeutics in vivo because of certain unfavorable characteristics, such as instability, biological carrier-dependent cellular uptake, short pharmacokinetic profiles in vivo (RNA), and on-target and off-target side effects (DNA). The development of lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) as gene vehicles is revolutionary progress that has contributed the clinical application of nucleic acid therapeutics. LNPs have the capability to entrap and transport various genetic materials such as small interfering RNA, mRNA, DNA, and gene editing complexes. This opens up avenues for addressing ocular diseases through the suppression of pathogenic genes, the expression of therapeutic proteins, or the correction of genetic defects. Here, we delve into the cutting-edge LNP technology for ocular gene therapy, encompassing formulation designs, preclinical development, and clinical translation.

Design and lyophilization of mRNA-encapsulating lipid nanoparticles

The remarkable success of two FDA-approved mRNA-encapsulating vaccines (Comirnaty® and Spikevax®) indicated the importance of lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) delivery systems in clinical use. Currently, mRNA-encapsulating LNPs (mRNA-LNPs) vaccines are stored as frozen liquid at low or ultralow temperatures. We designed lyophilized LNPs utilizing FDA-approved lipids to expedite the clinical application of our developed lyophilized mRNA-LNPs in the future. The key parameters of sucrose concentration and the selection and molar ratio of the four lipids in these vaccines were optimized for long-term stability with high transfection efficiency after lyophilization. We demonstrated that 8.7% sucrose is the optimal cryoprotectant concentration to maintain the transfection efficiency of lyophilized mRNA-LNPs. Optimal lipid formulations with high transfection efficiency both before and after lyophilization were screened using an orthogonal experimental design. The ratios of distearoylphosphatidylcholine (DSPC)/cholesterol and the selection of the ionizable and PEGylated lipids are the main factors influencing the long-term stability of mRNA-LNPs. Comparative mouse transfection experiments showed that the optimal lyophilized mRNA-LNPs maintained high mRNA expression after lyophilization, predominantly in the spleen or liver, with no expression in the kidneys or eyes. Our studies demonstrated the importance of the sucrose concentration and of the selection and molar ratio of the four lipids composing LNPs for maintaining mRNA-LNP stability under lyophilization and for long-term storage under mild conditions.

Investigation of spectroscopic and electrical properties of doped poly(pyrrole-3-carboxylic acid)

The spectroscopic and electrical properties of poly(pyrrole-3-carboxylic acid) doped with p-TSA- (p-toluenesulfonate) and AQS- (anthraquinone sulfonate) were investigated. The variation in electrical conductivity as a function of temperature shows that the systems have semiconductor-like electrical characteristics. The investigated polymers exhibit 3D conductivity and less than 0.6 eV energy gaps. The IR and Raman spectra show that the charge carriers are polarons and bipolarons. Doping the poly(pyrrole-3-carboxylic acid) increases the number of charge carriers. Electron paramagnetic resonance has shown that localized polarons and bipolarons are formed within these polymers.

Efficient Dienyl End-Capping of Ruthenium Catalyzed Ring Opening Metathesis Polymerization with Allyl Compounds through Base-Promoted Metallacyclobutane Decomposition

Herein we demonstrate an effective and facile end-capping technique for ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) using readily available allyl compounds as a new type of terminating agents. This new type of end-capping reactions, which are based on the base-promoted decomposition of ruthenocyclobutane intermediates, introduce diene moiety onto the chain end of ROMP polymers while simultaneously deactivating the ruthenium complex. These termination reactions are highly efficient, typically completing within 1 minute at 0 °C with >95 % end-capping fidelity.

Exploring the potential of chitin and chitosan in nanobiocomposites for fungal immunological detection and antifungal action

Chitin is a polymer of N-acetylglucosamine and an essential component of the fungal cell wall. Chitosan is the deacetylated form of chitin and is also important for maintaining the integrity of this structure. Both polysaccharides are widely distributed in nature and have been shown to have a variety of applications in biomedicine, including their potential in immune sensing and as potential antifungal agents. In addition, chitin has been reported to play an important role in the pathogen-host interaction, involving innate and adaptive immune responses. This paper will explore the role of chitin and chitosan when incorporated into nanobiocomposites to improve their efficacy in detecting fungi of medical interest and inhibiting their growth. Potential applications in diagnostic and therapeutic medicine will be discussed, highlighting their promise in the development of more sensitive and effective tools for the early diagnosis of fungal infections. This review aims to highlight the importance of the convergence of nanotechnology and biology in addressing public health challenges.

A review on the potential of cellulose nanomaterials for the development of thin film composite polyamide membranes for water treatment

Membrane-based separation technologies have drawn significant interest because of their compactness, low energy consumption, and ability to be easily integrated with existing processes. There has been significant interest in the utilization of natural materials derived from sustainable and renewable resources for membrane fabrication. Cellulose is one of the promising polymers which has been extensively studied in membrane fabrication and modification due to its abundant availability, non-toxicity and biodegradability. While there have been several reviews in recent years separately on TFC membranes and cellulose-based materials for different applications, reviews exclusively focusing on cellulosic nanomaterials-based TFC membranes are still lacking. This review provides an overview of the types of cellulose nanomaterials exploited for the development and modification of TFC membranes, particularly those used for desalination and wastewater treatment. We have presented a brief description of cellulose-based nanomaterials followed by a detailed discussion of different studies addressing each cellulose nanomaterial separately. In addition, we have summarized the performance of different studies in the literature, paying particular attention to the enhancement achieved by the incorporation of cellulose nanomaterial in the membrane.

Studying surfactant mass transport through dynamic interfacial tension measurements: A review of the models, experiments, and the contribution of microfluidics

Surfactant mass transport towards an interface plays a critical role during formation of emulsions, foams and in industrial processes where two immiscible phases coexist. The understanding of these mechanisms as experimentally observed by dynamic interfacial tension measurements, is crucial. In this review, theoretical models describing both equilibrated systems and surfactant kinetics are covered. Experimental results from the literature are analysed based on the nature of surfactants and the tensiometry methods used. The innovative microfluidic techniques that have become available to study both diffusion and adsorption mechanisms during surfactant mass transport are discussed and compared with classical methods. This review focuses on surfactant transport during formation of droplets or bubbles; stabilisation of dispersed systems is not discussed here.

Phosphorus and nitrogen supramolecule for fabricating flame-retardant, transparent and robust polyvinyl alcohol film

Supramolecular flame retardants have attracted increasing attention recently due to their simple and eco-friendly preparation process. In this study, a novel flame retardant HEPFR was prepared using supramolecular self-assembly technology between piperazine and 1-hydroxy ethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid (HEDP). It was introduced into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix to form PVA/HEPFR composite film. Subsequently, the transparency, mechanical properties, thermal stability, and flame retardancy of PVA/HEPFR films were studied. Due to the hydrogen bonded cross-linked network structure between PVA and HEPFR, the mechanical properties of PVA/HEPFR films have been improved, while maintaining good transparency. With 10 wt% addition of HEPFR, PVA films can reach the VTM-0 level in UL-94 testing. And the limiting oxygen index can be increased from 18.5% of pure PVA to 26.5%. The peak heat release rate was reduced by 61.5%. The flame retardancy and thermal stability of PVA/HEPFR films have been greatly improved. This study provides a "one stone, three birds" strategy for preparing flame-retardant, transparent, and robust PVA film.

Recent advances of electrospun strategies in topical products encompassing skincare and dermatological treatments

As the potential applications of electrospinning in healthcare continue to be explored, along with advancements in industrial-scale solutions and the emergence of portable electrospinning devices, some researchers have explored electrospinning technology in topical products, including its application in skincare, such as facial masks, beauty patches, sunscreen, and dermatological treatments for conditions like atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, acne, skin cancer, etc. In this review, we first outline the fundamental principles of electrospinning and provide an overview of existing solutions for large-scale production and the components and functionalities of portable spinning devices. Based on the essential functionalities required for skincare products and the mechanisms and treatment methods for the aforementioned dermatological diseases, we summarize the potential advantages of electrospinning technology in these areas, including encapsulation, sustained release, large surface area, and biocompatibility, among others. Furthermore, considering the further commercialization and clinical development of electrospinning technology, we offer our insights on current challenges and future perspectives in these areas, including issues such as ingredients, functionality, residue concerns, environmental impact, and efficiency issues.

Non-negative matrix factorization-aided phase unmixing and trace element quantification of STEM-EDXS data

Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS) mapping with a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) is commonly used for chemical characterization of materials. However, STEM-EDXS quantification becomes challenging when the phases constituting the sample under investigation share common elements and overlap spatially. In this paper, we present a methodology to identify, segment, and unmix phases with a substantial spectral and spatial overlap in a semi-automated fashion through combining non-negative matrix factorization with a priori knowledge of the sample. We illustrate the methodology using a sample taken from an electron beam-sensitive mineral assemblage representing Earth's deep mantle. With it, we retrieve the true EDX spectra of the constituent phases and their corresponding phase abundance maps. It further enables us to achieve a reliable quantification for trace elements having concentration levels of ∼100 ppm. Our approach can be adapted to aid the analysis of many materials systems that produce STEM-EDXS datasets having phase overlap and/or limited signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in spatially-integrated spectra.

Preparation of imidazolium ionic liquid functionalized paper membrane for selective extraction of caffeic acid and its structural and functional analogues from Taraxaci Herba

In the search for pharmaceutically active compounds from natural products, it is crucial and challenging to develop separation or purification methods that target not only structurally similar compounds but also those with specific pharmaceutical functions. The adsorption-based method is widely employed in this field and holds potential for this application, given the diverse range of functional monomers that can be chosen based on structural or functional selectivity. In this work, an imidazolium ionic liquid (IL) modified paper membrane was synthesized via microwave reaction. Caffeic acid (CA), with potential interactions with imidazolium IL and a representative component of phenolic acids in Taraxaci Herba, was chosen as a target compound. After optimization of synthesis and extraction parameters, the resulting extraction membrane could be used to quantitatively analyze CA at ng/ml level, and to extract CA's analogues from the sample matrix. Cheminformatics confirmed the presence of structural and functional similarity among these extracted compounds. This study offers a novel approach to preparing a readily synthesized extraction membrane capable of isolating compounds with structural and functional analogies, as well as developing a membrane solid-phase extraction-based analytical method for natural products.

Enhanced demulsification of alkaline-surfactant-polymer flooding O/W emulsion by multibranched polyether-polyquaternium based on the size effect of oil droplets

In the alkaline-surfactant-polymer flooding emulsion, oil droplets with various sizes exhibited different interfacial properties, resulting in different stabilization and destabilization behaviors. In view of this, it is expected to achieve outstanding oil-water separation efficiency by screening targeted demulsifier for oil droplets with different size ranges (0-1, 1-5 and 5-10 μm). Based on the size effect of oil droplets, a series of multibranched polyether-polyquaternium demulsifiers that integrated different charge neutralization and interfacial displacement functionalities were designed by regulating the cationicity and EO:PO ratios. As a result, the most effective polyether-polyquaternium variant for each size range of oil droplet was screened out. By employing these three selected polyether-polyquaternium variants in a sequential batch demulsification test, the maximum demulsification efficiency of 95.1% was obtained, which was much higher than that using a single polyether-polyquaternium variant (82.5%, 80.5% and 83.8%). The adsorption behaviors of polyether-polyquaternium variants on the oil/water interface were investigated by the molecular dynamics simulation. Moreover, the interfacial properties and oil droplet size variations during the demulsification process were monitored, so as explore the demulsification mechanism. This demulsification protocol based on the size effect of oil droplets with its excellent oil-water separation performance offered significant technical promise for the emulsified oil wastewater disposal.

Predicting and screening high-performance polyimide membranes using negative correlation based deep ensemble methods

Polyimide polymer membranes have become critical materials in gas separation and storage applications due to their high selectivity and excellent permeability. However, with over 107 known types of polyimides, relying solely on experimental research means potential high-performance candidates are likely to be overlooked. This study employs a deep learning method optimized by negative correlation ensemble techniques to predict the gas permeability and selectivity of polyimide structures, enabling rapid and efficient material screening. We propose a deep neural network model based on negative correlation deep ensemble methods (DNN-NCL), using Morgan molecular fingerprints as input. The DNN-NCL model achieves an R2 value of approximately 0.95 on the test set, which is a 4% improvement over recent model performance, and effectively mitigates overfitting with a maximum discrepancy of less than 0.03 between the training and test sets. High-throughput screening of over 8 million hypothetical polymers identified hundreds of promising candidates for gas separation membranes, with 14 structures exceeding the Robeson upper bound for CO2/N2 separation. Visualization of high-throughput predictions shows that although the Robeson upper bound was never explicitly used as a model constraint, the majority of predictions are compressed below this limit, demonstrating the deep learning model's ability to reflect real-world physical conditions. Reverse analysis of model predictions using SHAP analysis achieved interpretability of the deep learning model's predictions and identified three key functional groups deemed important by the deep neural network for gas permeability: carbonyl, thiophene, and ester groups. This established a bridge between the structure and properties of polyimide materials. Additionally, we confirmed that two polyimide structures predicted by the model to have excellent CO2/N2 selectivity, namely 6-methylpyrimidin-5-amine and 1,4,5,6-tetrahydropyrimidin-2-amine, have been experimentally validated in previous studies. This research demonstrates the feasibility of using deep learning methods to explore the vast chemical space of polyimides, providing a powerful tool for discovering high-performance gas separation membranes.

Fabrication and characterization of calcium peroxide and berberine loaded cryogels for enhanced wound healing

Wound healing represents a complex biological process crucial for tissue repair and regeneration. In recent years, biomaterial-based scaffolds loaded with bioactive compounds have emerged as promising therapeutic strategies to accelerate wound healing. In this study, we investigated the properties and wound healing effects of cryogels loaded with calcium peroxide (CP) and berberine (BB). The cryogels were synthesized through a cryogenic freezing technique and displayed pore diameters of 83 ± 39 μm, with porosity exceeding 90%. Following 20 days of degradation, the percentage of remaining weight for GPC and GPC-CP-BB cryogels was determined to be 12.42 ± 2.45% and 10.78 ± 2.08%, respectively. Moreover, the swelling ratios after 3 minutes for GPC and GPC-CP-BB were found to be 22.10 ± 0.05 and 21.00 ± 0.07, respectively. In vitro investigations demonstrated the cytocompatibility of the cryogels, with sufficient adhesion and proliferation of fibroblast (NIH-3T3) cells observed on the scaffolds, along with their hemocompatibility. Furthermore, the cryogels exhibited sustained release kinetics of both calcium peroxide and berberine, ensuring prolonged therapeutic effects at the wound site. In vivo assessment using a rat model of full-thickness skin wounds demonstrated accelerated wound closure rates in animals treated with the GPC-CP-BB scaffold compared to controls. Histological analysis revealed enhanced granulation tissue formation, re-epithelialization, and collagen deposition in the GPC-CP-BB group. Overall, our findings suggest that the scaffold loaded with CP and BB holds great promise as a therapeutic approach for promoting wound healing. Its multifaceted properties offer a multifunctional platform for localized delivery of therapeutic agents while providing mechanical support and maintaining a favorable microenvironment for tissue regeneration.

Design and Construction of Highly Luminescent Transparent Woody Materials Exhibiting Unique Fluorescence-Enhanced Staining Effects for Visualization of Intrinsic Microporous Networks

Luminescent wood materials are an emerging class of biomass hybrid host materials owing to the hierarchical porous structure and functionalization versatility. The fluorescence properties are largely dependent on exogenous fluorophores, which are, however, often plagued by notorious aggregation effects. In this work, an efficient strategy for the preparation of luminescent transparent wood materials is developed by incorporating tetraphenylethylene-derived aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-active fluorophores during a delignification-backfill transparency process. These wood hybrids showed unexpected luminescence enhancement that significantly increased the fluorescence quantum yield of the fluorophores up to 99%, much higher than that of the fluorophores in other states such as crystalline solids or doped in a polymer substrate. Mechanistic investigations reveal that in situ polymerization of prepolymerized methyl methacrylate in delignified microporous wood frames produces high molecular weight ordered PMMA polymers, resulting in a rigid molecular environment that improves the luminescence efficiency of TPE-based fluorophores at the interfaces of PMMA polymer and cell walls. By confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), this excellent fluorescence staining capability was furthermore utilized to visualize the intrinsic porous network of wood in three dimensions over a large volume with submicrometer resolution, thus providing an alternative approach to the study of structure-function relationships in such wood hybrids.

Recent advances on nanomaterial-based glutathione sensors

Glutathione (GSH) is one of the most common thiol-containing molecules discovered in biological systems, and it plays an important role in many cellular functions, where changes in physiological glutathione levels contribute to the progress of a variety of diseases. Molecular imaging employing fluorescent probes is thought to be a sensitive technique for online fluorescence detection of GSH. Although various molecular probes for (intracellular) GSH sensing have been reported, some aspects remain unanswered, such as quantitative intracellular analysis, dynamic monitoring, and compatibility with biological environment. Some of these drawbacks can be overcome by sensors based on nanostructured materials, that have attracted considerable attention owing to their exceptional properties, including a large surface area, heightened electro-catalytic activity, and robust mechanical resilience, for which they have become integral components in the development of highly sensitive chemo- and biosensors. Additionally, engineered nanomaterials have demonstrated significant promise in enhancing the precision of disease diagnosis and refining treatment specificity. The aim of this review is to investigate recent advancements in fabricated nanomaterials tailored for detecting GSH. Specifically, it examines various material categories, encompassing carbon, polymeric, quantum dots (QDs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), metal-based, and silicon-based nanomaterials, applied in the fabrication of chemo- and biosensors. The fabrication of nano-biosensors, mechanisms, and methodologies employed for GSH detection utilizing these fabricated nanomaterials will also be elucidated. Remarkably, there is a noticeable absence of existing reviews specifically dedicated to the nanomaterials for GSH detection since they are not comprehensive in the case of nano-fabrication, mechanisms and methodologies of detection, as well as applications in various biological environments. This research gap presents an opportune moment to thoroughly assess the potential of nanomaterial-based approaches in advancing GSH detection methodologies.

Selective 1,1- and 1,2-dibromination of phenylethanes in the presence of NaBr/NaBrO3/H2SO4 as the bromination reagent

Selective 1,1- and 1,2-dibromination of phenylethanes by simply adjusting the reaction conditions has been developed. Mixtures of NaBr/NaBrO3/H2SO4 are employed as green bromination reagents, which can release Br2 or BrOH in situ as required without polluting the environment. Both the resulting 1,1- and 1,2-dibromoethyl arenes can be easily transformed to phenylacetylenes via elimination under basic conditions, demonstrating great potential for industrial applications.

Computational investigation of the effects of polymer grafting on the effective interaction between silica nanoparticles in water

Understanding and control of the effective interaction between nanoscale building blocks (colloids or nanoparticles) dispersed in a solvent is an important prerequisite for the development of bottom-up design strategies for soft functional materials. Here, we have employed all-atom molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the impact of polymer grafting on the solvent-mediated effective interaction between the silica nanoparticles (Si-NPs) in water, and in turn, on its bulk structural and thermodynamic properties. We found that the nature of the short grafting polymers [characterized by their interaction with water (hydrophobicity or hydrophilicity) and molecular weight] has a profound effect on the range and strength of the effective interaction between the Si-NPs. The hydrophobic polymer [such as polyethylene (PE)]-grafting of Si-NP gives rise to a more attractive interaction between the Si-NPs compared to the hydrophilic polymer [such as polyethylene glycol (PEG)] and non-grafted cases. This study further provides fundamental insights into the molecular origin of the observed behavior of the effective pair interactions between the grafted Si-NPs. For PE-grafted Si-NPs, the confined water (water inside the cavity formed by a pair of Si-NPs) undergoes a partial dewetting transition on approaching below a critical inter-particle separation leading to a stronger attractive interaction. Furthermore, we report that the effective attraction between the PE-grafted Si-NPs can be reliably controlled by changing the grafting PE density. We have also investigated the bulk structural and thermodynamic behavior of the coarse-grained Si-NP system where the particles interact via effective interaction in the absence of water. We believe that the insights gained from this work are important prerequisites for formulating rational bottom-up design strategies for functional materials where nano- (or, colloidal) particles are the building blocks.

Designing a Schottky Barrier-Free Interface for a Highly Conductive Anode in Proton Exchange Membrane Water Electrolysis

Iridium, the most widely used anode catalyst in proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE), must be used minimally due to its high price and limited supply. However, reducing iridium loading poses challenges due to abnormally large anode polarization. Herein, we present an anode catalyst layer (CL) based on a one-dimensional iridium nanofiber that enables a high current density operation of 3 A cm-2 at 1.86 V, even at an ultralow loading (0.07 mgIr cm-2). The performance is maintained even with a Pt coating-free porous transport layer (PTL) because our nanofiber CL circumvents the interfacial electron transport problem caused by the native oxide on the Ti PTL. We attribute this to the low work function and the low-ionomer-exposed surface of the nanofiber CL, which prevent the formation of Schottky contact at the native oxide interface. These results highlight the significance of optimizing the electronic properties of the CL/PTL interface for low-iridium-loading PEMWE.

Encapsulation of Cu(II) Terpyridine Complexes into Polymeric Nanoparticles for Enhanced Anticancer Therapy

Cancer is one of the deadliest diseases worldwide. One of the most commonly applied therapeutic techniques to combat this disease is chemotherapy. Despite its success, the majority of clinically applied chemotherapeutic agents are associated with strong side effects and drug resistance. To overcome this limitation, much research efforts are devoted toward the development of new anticancer agents. Among the most promising class of compounds, Cu(II) complexes have emerged. Despite their strong cytotoxic effect, these agents are typically associated with low water solubility, low stability, and poor tumor selectivity. To overcome these limitations, herein, we report on the encapsulation of a promising Cu(II) terpyridine complex with the Pluronic F-127/Poloxamer-407 polymeric carrier into nanoparticles. Besides overcoming the pharmacological drawbacks, the nanoparticles were able to eradicate human breast adenocarcinoma monolayer cells as well as challenging multicellular tumor spheroids at nanomolar concentrations.

Fibres-threads of intelligence-enable a new generation of wearable systems

Fabrics represent a unique platform for seamlessly integrating electronics into everyday experiences. The advancements in functionalizing fabrics at both the single fibre level and within constructed fabrics have fundamentally altered their utility. The revolution in materials, structures, and functionality at the fibre level enables intimate and imperceptible integration, rapidly transforming fibres and fabrics into next-generation wearable devices and systems. In this review, we explore recent scientific and technological breakthroughs in smart fibre-enabled fabrics. We examine common challenges and bottlenecks in fibre materials, physics, chemistry, fabrication strategies, and applications that shape the future of wearable electronics. We propose a closed-loop smart fibre-enabled fabric ecosystem encompassing proactive sensing, interactive communication, data storage and processing, real-time feedback, and energy storage and harvesting, intended to tackle significant challenges in wearable technology. Finally, we envision computing fabrics as sophisticated wearable platforms with system-level attributes for data management, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and closed-loop intelligent networks.

Lightweight Calcium-Silicate-Hydrate Nacre with High Strength and High Toughness

Low flexural strength and toughness have posed enduring challenges to cementitious materials. As the main hydration product of cement, calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) plays important roles in the mechanical performance of cementitious materials while exhibiting random microstructures with pores and defects, which hinder mechanical enhancement. Inspired by the "brick-and-mortar" microstructure of natural nacre, this paper presents a method combining freeze casting, freeze-drying, in situ polymerization, and hot pressing to fabricate C-S-H nacre with high flexural strength, high toughness, and lightweight. Poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid) was used to disperse C-S-H and toughen C-S-H building blocks, which function as "bricks", while poly(methyl methacrylate) was impregnated as "mortar". The flexural strength, toughness, and density of C-S-H nacre reached 124 MPa, 5173 kJ/m3, and 0.98 g/cm3, respectively. The flexural strength and toughness of the C-S-H nacre are 18 and 1230 times higher than those of cement paste, respectively, with a 60% reduction in density, outperforming existing cementitious materials and natural nacre. This research establishes the relationship between material composition, fabrication process, microstructure, and mechanical performance, facilitating the design of high-performance C-S-H-based and cement-based composites for scalable engineering applications.

Ultra-Fast-Healing Glassy Hyperbranched Plastics Capable of Restoring 26.4 MPa Tensile Strength within One Minute at Room Temperature

The growing concern regarding widespread plastic pollution has propelled the development of sustainable self-healing plastics. Although considerable efforts have been dedicated to fabricating self-healing plastics, achieving rapid healing at room temperature is extremely challenging. Herein, we have developed an ultra-fast-healing glassy polyurethane (UGPU) by designing a hyperbranched molecular structure with a high density of multiple hydrogen bonds (H-bonds) on compliant acyclic heterochains and introducing trace water to form water bridge across the fractured surfaces. The compliant acyclic heterochains allow the dense multiple hydrogen bonds to form a frozen network, enabling tensile strength of up to 70 MPa and storage modulus of 2.5 GPa. The hyperbranched structure can drive the reorganization of the H-bonding network through the high mobility of the branched chains and terminals, thereby leading to self-healing ability at room temperature. Intriguingly, the presence of trace water vapor facilitates the formation of activated layers and the rearrangement of networks across the fractured UGPU sections, thereby enabling ultra-fast self-healing at room temperature. Consequently, the restored tensile strength after healing for 1 minute achieves a historic-record of 26.4 MPa. Furthermore, the high transparency (>90 %) and ultra-fast healing property of UGPU make it an excellent candidate for advanced optical and structural materials.

Research Progress of Flexible Piezoresistive Sensors Based on Polymer Porous Materials

Flexible piezoresistive sensors are in high demand in areas such as wearable devices, electronic skin, and human-machine interfaces due to their advantageous features, including low power consumption, excellent bending stability, broad testing pressure range, and simple manufacturing technology. With the advancement of intelligent technology, higher requirements for the sensitivity, accuracy, response time, measurement range, and weather resistance of piezoresistive sensors are emerging. Due to the designability of polymer porous materials and conductive phases, and with more multivariate combinations, it is possible to achieve higher sensitivity and lower detection limits, which are more promising than traditional flexible sensor materials. Based on this, this work reviews recent advancements in research on flexible pressure sensors utilizing polymer porous materials. Furthermore, this review examines sensor performance optimization and development from the perspectives of three-dimensional porous flexible substrate regulation, sensing material selection and composite technology, and substrate and sensing material structure design.

Stimuli-responsive materials in oral diseases: a review

OBJECTIVES

Oral diseases, such as dental caries, periodontitis, and oral cancers, are highly prevalent worldwide. Many oral diseases are typically associated with bacterial infections or the proliferation of malignant cells, and they are usually located superficially.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Articles were retrieved from PubMed/Medline, Web of Science. All studies focusing on stimuli-responsive materials in oral diseases were included and carefully evaluated.

RESULTS

Stimulus-responsive materials are innovative materials that selectively undergo structural changes and trigger drug release based on shifts at the molecular level, such as changes in pH, electric field, magnetic field, or light in the surrounding environment. These changes lead to alterations in the properties of the materials at the macro- or microscopic level. Consequently, stimuli-responsive materials are particularly suitable for treating superficial site diseases and have found extensive applications in antibacterial and anticancer therapies. These characteristics make them convenient and effective for addressing oral diseases.

CONCLUSIONS

This review aimed to summarize the classification, mechanism of action, and application of stimuli-responsive materials in the treatment of oral diseases, point out the existing limitations, and speculate the prospects for clinical applications.

Our findings may provide useful information of stimuli-responsive materials in oral diseases for dental clinicians.

Preparation of 4-Allenyloxazolines from (Z)-2-En-4-yn-1-ol via Propargyl/Allenyl Isomerization

A novel method for the preparation of 4-allenyl-oxazolines 2 is described via the reaction of 2-en-4-yn-1-ols 1 with trichloroacetonitrile in the presence of DBU. Reaction proceeds through the nucleophilic attack of OH functionality in 1 to CCl3CN followed by cyclization, propargyl/allene isomerization, and protonation. In this investigation, it is noticed that propargyl/allene isomerization is sensitive to the substituents.

Flame retardancy and smoke suppression properties of bio-based chitosan polyelectrolyte flame retardant containing P and N in epoxy resin

This study reports the successful synthesis of flame-retardant and smoke-suppressing epoxy resin (EP) via bio-based polyelectrolyte flame retardants. Herein, a novel polyelectrolyte flame retardant was prepared from chitosan (CS) and hexa-(4-carboxyl-phenoxy)-cyclotriphosphazene (HCPCP) by acid-base neutralization reaction, which the HCPCP was synthesized with hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene (HCCP) and methyl p-hydroxybenzoate (MP) by nucleophilic substitution reaction. The combined effect of the addition on the flame retardant, smoke suppression and mechanical properties of EP samples were systematically investigated. The presence of this bio-based polyelectrolyte provided excellent smoke suppression and flame-retardant properties of the prepared EP. Among them, the peak heat release rate (PHRR), peak smoke production rate (PSPR) and total smoke production (TSP) of EP/9wt%3CS-HCPCP composite (the ratio of CS to HCPCP was 3: 7, and the dosage was 9 wt%) were reduced by 45.42 %, 41.66 % and 22.56 %, respectively. In addition, the EP/CS-HCPCP composites showed a 207.80 % enhancement in char residue compared to pure EP. These results suggest a green and cost-effective strategy for the production of flame-retardant, drip-proof and smoke-suppressed EP composites.

Size-tailored and acid-degradable polyvinyl alcohol microgels for inhalation therapy of bacterial pneumonia

Administration of antibiotics via inhalation is considered an effective strategy for pneumonia treatment; however, it encounters challenges related to the development of drug formulations with precise particle sizes and controlled release profiles. Herein, size-tailored and acid-degradable polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) microgels are utilized for nebulized inhalation delivery of piperacillin (PIP) antibiotics to effectively treat pneumonia. These microgels loaded with PIP (G@PIP) were prepared through the UV-crosslinking of thermo-triggered vinyl ether methacrylate-functionalized PVA (PVAVEMA) micro-aggregates in aqueous solution. The size of G@PIP microgels could be tailored by adjusting concentrations during the crosslinking process above phase-transition temperature at 15 °C. Additionally, under simulated inflammatory acidic conditions, the G@PIP microgels degraded and released PIP with relatively high inhibition efficiency against E. coli. Furthermore, in vivo therapeutic outcomes revealed that inhalational delivery of G@PIP microgel with a medium-size of 3.5 μm (G-3.5@PIP) exhibited superior lung deposition compared to other microgel sizes owing to its reduced exhalation and enhanced diffusion capacity within the pulmonary system. The high accumulation of G-3.5@PIP significantly reduced E. coli infection and associated inflammation while maintaining the biocompatibility of the microgels. Overall, these acid-degradable PVA microgels offer a versatile and efficacious inhalation therapy for pneumonia-associated infections.

Gelatin-based ionic hydrogel for intelligent fire-alarm system with considerable toughness, flame retardancy, and thermoelectric performance

Temperature-responsive materials with excellent reliability, sensitivity, and flame-retardant properties have always been an urgent need in the field of intelligent fire protection. In this discourse, we introduce a novel thermosensitive ionic hydrogel coating (gelatin/poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid)/CaCl2/spindle-shaped aluminum hydroxide nanosheet/glycerol, HCA) synthesized via free radical polymerization. HCA not only demonstrates considerable mechanical properties with a fracture strain of up to 842.5 % and a maximum tensile strength of 0.77 MPa but also exhibits notable flame retardancy and adhesion. It effectively covers combustible surfaces, providing outstanding fire protection. Notably, HCA boasts a Seebeck coefficient of up to 10.1 mV/K, significantly surpassing conventional thermoelectric materials. The well-established linear relationship between the generated voltage and temperature variation enables HCA-based intelligent fire-alarm system to accurately emit continuous alerts during fire incidents and swiftly transmit alarm signals to terminal devices. The development of this intelligent fire-alarm system presents new avenues in intelligent fire-safety technologies.

Ultrarobust, Self-Healing Poly(urethane-urea) Elastomer with Superior Tensile Strength and Intrinsic Flame Retardancy Enabled by Coordination Cross-Linking

Poly(urethane-urea) elastomers (PUUEs) have gained significant attention recently due to their growing demand in electronic skin, wearable electronic devices, and aerospace applications. The practical implementation of these elastomers necessitates many exceptional properties to ensure robust and safe utilization. However, achieving an optimal balance between high mechanical strength, good self-healing at moderate temperatures, and efficient flame retardancy for poly(urethane-urea) elastomers remains a formidable challenge. In this study, we incorporated metal coordination bonds and flame-retarding phosphinate groups into the design of poly(urethane-urea) simultaneously, resulting in a high-strength, self-healing, and flame-retardant elastomer, termed PNPU-2%Zn. Additional supramolecular cross-links and plasticizing effects of phosphinate-endowed PUUEs with relatively remarkable tensile strength (20.9 MPa), high elastic modulus (10.8 MPa), and exceptional self-healing efficiency (above 97%). Besides, PNPU-2%Zn possessed self-extinguishing characteristics with a limiting oxygen index (LOI) of 26.5%. Such an elastomer with superior properties can resist both mechanical fracture and fire hazards, providing insights into the development of robust and high-performance components for applications in wearable electronic devices.

Biocide physically cross-linked hydrogels based on carrageenan and guanidinium polyampholytes for wound healing applications

Over last years, hydrogels based on natural polymers have attracted considerable interest as materials for wound healing. Herein, hydrogel films based on kappa-carrageenan and guanidinium polyampholytes were prepared by the in situ physical cross-linking with potassium chloride and borax, respectively. The polyampholytes were obtained by a free radical copolymerization of 2,2-diallyl-1,1,3,3-tetraethylguanidinium chloride and unsaturated acids. To characterize the composite films, NMR, FTIR, SEM, TGA, XRD, element analysis and tensile test were used. Ampicillin was incorporated into the hydrogels to enhance wound healing potential. The healing-related characteristics, including swelling ratio, drug release and antimicrobial activity, were assessed. The equilibrium swelling ratios were in the range of 3.9-6.5 depending on the polyampholyte composition. According to the in vitro ampicillin release studies, 30-43 % of ampicillin was released from the hydrogels after 5 h at 37 °C and pH 7.4, with drug release being temperature and pH dependent. The ampicillin-loaded films showed a remarkable antimicrobial effect. The inhibition sizes for Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were 1.10-1.85 and 1.95-2.60 cm, respectively. Although the bi-polymeric hydrogels were thoroughly characterized, with the in vitro study of their biocidal effects carried out in this work, the in vivo drug release assessment needs to be further explored.

Immobilized Drugs on Dual-Mode Imaging Ag2S/BaSO4/PVA Embolic Microspheres for Precise Localization, Rapid Embolization, and Local Antitumor Therapy

Transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) in interventional therapy and tumor embolism therapy plays a significant role. The choice of embolic materials that have good biocompatibility is an essential component of TAE. For this study, we produced a multifunctional PVA embolization material that can simultaneously encapsulate Ag2S quantum dots (Ag2S QDs) and BaSO4 nanoparticles (BaSO4 NPs), exhibiting excellent second near-infrared window (NIR-II) fluorescence imaging and X-ray imaging, breaking through the limitations of traditional embolic microsphere X-ray imaging. To improve the therapeutic effectiveness against tumors, we doped the doxorubicin (DOX) antitumor drug into microspheres and combined it with a clotting peptide (RADA16-I) on the surface of microspheres. Thus, it not only embolizes rapidly during hemostasis but also continues to release and accelerate tumor necrosis. In addition, Ag2S/BaSO4/PVA microspheres (Ag2S/BaSO4/PVA Ms) exhibited good blood compatibility and biocompatibility, and the results of embolization experiments on renal arteries in rabbits revealed good embolic effects and bimodal imaging stability. Therefore, they could serve as a promising medication delivery embolic system and an efficient biomaterial for arterial embolization. Our research work achieves the applicability of NIR-II and X-ray dual-mode images for clinical embolization in biomedical imaging.

Mechanical Assessment of Denture Polymers Processing Technologies

BACKGROUND

Removable prostheses have seen a fundamental change recently because of advances in polymer materials, allowing improved durability and performance. Despite these advancements, notable differences still occur amongst various polymer materials and processing technologies, requiring a thorough grasp of their mechanical, physical, and therapeutic implications. The compressive strength of dentures manufactured using various technologies will be investigated.

METHODS

Traditional, injection molding, and additive and subtractive CAD/CAM processing techniques, all utilizing Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) as the main material, were used to construct complete dentures. The specimens underwent a compressive mechanical test, which reveals the differences in compressive strength.

RESULTS

All the specimens broke under the influence of a certain force, rather than yielding through flow, as is characteristic for plastic materials. For each specimen, the maximum force (N) was recorded, as well as the breaking energy. The mean force required to break the dentures for each processing technology is as follows: 4.54 kN for traditional packing-press technique, 17.92 kN for the injection molding technique, 1.51 kN for the additive CAD/CAM dentures, and 5.9 kN for the subtractive CAD/CAM dentures.

CONCLUSIONS

The best results were obtained in the case of the thermoplastic injection system and the worst results were recorded in the case of 3D printed samples. Another important aspect depicted is the standard deviation for each group, which reveal a relatively unstable property for the thermoplastic injected dentures. Good results here in terms of absolute property and stability of the property can be conferred to CAD/CAM milled group.

Reactive oxygen species driven prodrug-based nanoscale carriers for transformative therapies

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) drive processes in various pathological conditions serving as an attractive target for therapeutic strategies. This review highlights the development and use of ROS-dependent prodrug-based nanoscale carriers that has transformed many biomedical applications. Incorporating prodrugs into nanoscale carriers not only improves their stability and solubility but also enables site-specific drug delivery ultimately enhancing the therapeutic effectiveness of the nanoscale carriers. We critically examine recent advances in ROS-responsive nanoparticulate platforms, encompassing liposomes, polymeric nanoparticles, and inorganic nanocarriers. These platforms facilitate precise control over drug release upon encountering elevated ROS levels at disease sites, thereby minimizing off-target effects and maximizing therapeutic efficiency. Furthermore, we investigate the potential of combination therapies in which ROS-activated prodrugs are combined with other therapeutic agents and underscore their synergistic potential for treating multifaceted diseases. This comprehensive review highlights the immense potential of ROS-dependent prodrug-based nanoparticulate systems in revolutionizing biomedical applications; such nanoparticulate systems can facilitate selective and controlled drug delivery, reduce toxicity, and improve therapeutic outcomes for ROS-associated diseases.
