Effects of explanations and precise anchors on salary offers

Two studies were conducted which examined explanations and precise anchors on counteroffers and perceptions in a salary negotiation. Study 1 found that precise offers reduced counteroffers compared to round offers, but explanations focused on internal equity concerns or external equity concerns had no effect on counteroffers. Study 2 also found that precise offers reduced counteroffers compared to round offers. Explanations, which were manipulated to focus on constraint or disparagement rationales, failed to affect counteroffers, but a constraint explanation led to higher attributions of competence compared to a disparagement explanation or no explanation. These results suggest that precise offers are an effective tactic for reducing counteroffers and that explanations are relatively unimportant. Further research is needed to determine under what conditions an explanation may improve or harm negotiation outcomes.

Effects of Message-Sidedness on Perceived Source Bias: When Presenting Two Sides Does Versus Does Not Alleviate Concerns About Bias

Communicators commonly present two-sided messages to avoid being perceived as biased. This approach equates bias with one-sidedness rather than divergence from the position supported by available data. Messages often concern topics with mixed qualities: a product is exceptional but expensive; a politician is inexperienced but ethical. For these topics, providing a two-sided message should reduce perceived bias according to both views of bias as one-sidedness and divergence from available data. However, if perceived bias follows divergence from available data, for topics viewed as one-sided (univalent), a two-sided message should not reduce perceived bias. Across five studies, acknowledging two sides reduced perceived bias for novel topics. In two of the studies, two-sidedness no longer reduced perceived bias for topics viewed as univalent. This work clarifies that people conceptualize bias as a divergence from available data, not simply one-sidedness. It also clarifies when and how to leverage message-sidedness to reduce perceived bias.

On the Highway to Hell: Slippery Slope Perceptions in Judgments of Moral Character

Across four studies, we test the hypothesis that people exhibit "slippery slope" thinking in their judgments of moral character-that is, do observers judge that a person who behaves immorally will become increasingly immoral over time? In Study 1, we find that a person who commits an immoral act is judged as more likely to behave immorally and as having a worse character in the future than in the past. In Study 2, we find that it is the commission of an immoral act specifically-rather than merely attempting an immoral act-that drives this slippery slope effect. In Study 3, we demonstrate that observers judge the moral agent as more likely to commit acts of greater severity further in time after the initial immoral act. In Study 4, we find that this effect is driven by an anticipated corrupting of moral character, related to perceptions of the agent's guilt.

Who Made This? Algorithms and Authorship Credit

Producers and creators often receive assistance with work from other people. Increasingly, algorithms can provide similar assistance. When algorithms assist or augment producers, does this change individuals' willingness to assign credit to those producers? Across four studies spanning several domains (e.g., painting, construction, sports analytics, and entrepreneurship), we find evidence that producers receive more credit for work when they are assisted by algorithms, compared with humans. We also find that individuals assume algorithmic assistance requires more producer oversight than human assistance does, a mechanism that explains these higher attributions of credit (Studies 1-3). The greater credit individuals assign to producers assisted by algorithms (vs. other people) also manifests itself in increased support for those producers' entrepreneurial endeavors (Study 4). As algorithms proliferate, norms of credit and authorship are likely changing, precipitating a variety of economic and social consequences.

"Holding back my own emotions": Evaluation of an online education module in pediatric end-of-life care

Providing quality end-of-life care to a child who is dying in hospital can be stressful and challenging, and health professionals often feel ill-prepared and require additional support. End-of-Life Essentials offers online education modules for health professionals working in acute hospitals, including one on end-of-life care in pediatric settings. This study aimed to evaluate this module and explore learners' views on challenges faced when caring for a dying child and their family in a hospital setting. Learners comprised nurses, doctors, and allied health professionals. A quantitative pre-/post-evaluation analysis was conducted using learner data (n = 552) on knowledge and skills gained from engagement with the module, along with a qualitative thematic content analysis on learner responses (n = 395) to a post-evaluation free-text response question, between May 2019 and May 2020. Learners' post-evaluation ranks of perceived knowledge, skill, attitude, and confidence were significantly higher than pre-evaluation ranks (p < 0.001). Effect sizes were small to medium, ranging from 0.31 to 0.38 (95% confidence intervals from 0.23 to 0.45). Emerging themes from the qualitative data were dealing with emotions, and communicating effectively. This evaluation suggests that the Pediatrics module could be a useful online learning resource for health professionals. A planned longitudinal study will further investigate practice change.

Validity and Reliability of the Turkish Version of Mandibular Function Impairment Questionnaire

OBJECTIVE

To assess the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Mandibular Function Impairment Questionnaire (MFIQ-TR).

METHODS

Included in this study were 248 patients diagnosed with temporomandibular disorder (TMD) according to Diagnostic Criteria for TMD Axis I protocol. Construct-related validity was evaluated through internal and external construct validity; convergent and divergent validities were evaluated by the average variance extracted (AVE), composite reliability (CR), and bivariate correlations between factors. Reliability was assessed by internal consistency and test-retest reliability.

RESULTS

All items of the MFIQ-TR had content validity and factor loadings above 0.5. The model statistics indicated a good fit. The convergent validity was very good (AVE > 0.5 and CR > 0.7), and the discriminant validity was satisfied. Internal consistency and test-retest reliability of the MFIQ-TR were excellent.

CONCLUSION

The MFIQ-TR is a valid and reliable instrument for evaluating the impairment of mandibular function in Turkish patients with TMD.

Nicotine pouch marketing strategies in the USA: an analysis of Zyn, On! and Velo

INTRODUCTION

Nicotine pouches are gaining popularity, yet their marketing is understudied.

METHODS

Using Numerator advertising data from January 2019 to September 2021 regarding three popular brands of nicotine pouch in the USA-Zyn (by Swedish Match, introduced in the USA in July 2016), On! (Altria, August 2016) and Velo (RJ Reynolds, July 2019)-we examined (1) general advertising characteristics (eg, media type, year); (2) ad content (ie, headlines and imagery themes); (3) prominent media channels (ie, specific websites, magazines, etc); and (4) ad expenditures.

RESULTS

There were 286 unique ads (Zyn: 44.4%; On!: 2.8%; Velo: 52.8%), 119 143 occurrences (Zyn: 3.5%; On!: 0.5%; Velo: 96.0%) and $24 774 650 total expenditures (Zyn: 4.7%; On!: 0.6%; Velo: 94.7%). The greatest proportion of ad occurrences and expenditures were accounted for by radio (75.9% and 28.2%, respectively) and television (16.2% and 56.5%), followed by mobile (0.5% and 7.2%) and online display (6.7% and 3.6%). Across ad occurrences and expenditures, prominent headline themes included 'freedom' (26.0% and 17.1%, respectively), 'brand' (9.6% and 18.6%) and 'flavour' (16.4% and 7.6%); images mainly featured the product alone (61.4% and 56.1%), text (16.2% and 24.6%) or men (8.7% and 8.6%); and prominent channel themes were entertainment (34.7% and 37.3%), news/weather (14.3% and 21.7%), business/finance (12.9% and 9.0%) and sports (9.5% and 1.0%). Zyn and On! prioritised online display and print; Velo prioritised radio and television. Zyn's and Velo's headlines focused on 'freedom', with Zyn also emphasising 'brand' and Velo 'innovation'; On!'s headlines emphasised 'flavour'.

CONCLUSIONS

Regulatory efforts must be informed by surveillance of nicotine pouch marketing and impacts on consumer subgroups (eg, young people).

Psychometric Properties of the Turkish Version of the Surgical Anxiety Questionnaire (SAQ)

PURPOSE

This study aimed to determine the psychometric properties of the Turkish surgical anxiety questionnaire (SAQ) version.

DESIGN

This study design was methodological.

METHODS

The study was evaluated with construct validity, exploratory (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), and convergent and discriminant validity. For scale reliability, internal consistency, Cronbach Alpha Coefficient, Pearson Correlation Analysis, and Inter-item Correlation Analysis, test-retest, and parallel forms methods were used.

FINDINGS

The Turkish version of the surgical anxiety questionnaire consisted of a 3-factor structure, and the Cronbach's alpha value was 0.93. The CFA factor loads varied between 0.48-0.98. A positive, high correlation was found between SAQ and the Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Knowledge Scale (APASIS). A positive, moderate correlation between SAQ and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory-1(STAI-1) was found.

CONCLUSION

SAQ has strong validity and reliability in the Turkish society. Nurses could use the SAQ to determine the anxiety level in surgical patients.

Development of a new tool: progression of paediatric powered mobility- 3PM

PURPOSE

To develop a tool to assess the progression of powered mobility skills for children and determine its psychometric properties.

METHOD

A three-phase, the mixed-method design included: I) conceptualisation based on international specialists' input through a focus group or interview to generate initial items; II) tool development using a two-round Delphi survey and III) evaluation of psychometric properties from eight video recordings of children. The Progression of Paediatric Powered Mobility (3PM) was validated via Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) calculated from conventionally powered mobility assessments: the Powered Mobility Program, the Assessment of Learning Powered Mobility tool, and the Powered Mobility Proficiency test.

RESULTS

Content derived from 20 clinical experts led to the development of the first version consisting of 19 demographic and 61 driving skill items. Following two Delphi rounds, the final tool included 14 demographic and 41 driving skill items. Internal consistency was excellent (Cronbach alpha = 0.96) as was the inter-rater reliability (ICC = 0.96, 95% confidence interval = 0.95-0.96). Pearson correlation coefficients between the 3PM and other PM assessments demonstrated good convergent validity.

CONCLUSION

The 3PM, created through international collaboration with experts in PM, has excellent psychometric values as a valid measure that can be used reliably to assess children's powered mobility skills.Implications for rehabilitationThe 3PM reflects the three stages of powered mobility development: exploratory, operational, and functional stages.Input from clinical experts in PM mobility contributed to the identification of the key driving skills important to include in the 3PM.A reliable and valid tool can facilitate assessment and tailored intervention in paediatric powered mobility.

Patient satisfaction with therapeutic education in oncology: Antecedents, consequences, and the moderating effect of perceived value

This research aims to deepen our understanding of patients' satisfaction with therapeutic patient education (TPE) in oncology. The research model proposed was tested, with structural equation modeling, on 207 French breast-cancer patients who participated in a TPE program. The results confirm that post-TPE empowerment and relational proximity to the TPE team are two major antecedents of patient's satisfaction-and attitude and word-of-mouth toward TPE are two important consequences of this concept of satisfaction. However, the established relationships are moderated by the patients' profiles (i.e., utilitarin believers, passionate followers, or holistic followers) in terms of the perceived value of their own experience of patient education. These results will enable stakeholders to adapt their TPE promotion strategies to the profiles of the patients. The study will also help to demonstrate and highlight the patient benefits of TPE to various stakeholders and thus will favor access to this personalized care practice, which is essential in the management of chronic diseases, but is still limited in oncology.

Organizational citizenship behavior in the military context: Are we missing the mark?

Organizational citizenship behavior (OCB), discretionary behavior that promotes organizational effectiveness, is a well-developed construct with great importance to the military. Despite its significance, few studies have examined OCB within the armed services. Those that have tended to use existing OCB scales without additional validation and only minimal adaptation to the military context. This is problematic because of the distinctive features of the American armed services, such as the substantial power leaders possess to compel behavior and the uniqueness of behaviors that create military value. The purpose of this study is to develop and validate five OCBs and a second-order OCB factor that are fully discretionary and produce unique and substantial value for the military. These military OCBs include sacrificing, providing positive word-of-mouth endorsement of the military, voluntary retention in the organization, voluntary participation in activities, and use of services that improve welfare and readiness. Some of these behaviors are so vital that the military could not achieve its mission without them. This study also seeks to understand and assess antecedents of military OCB. Using survey data from several Army populations and a series of validation analyses, the results reveal five military OCB factors, a second-order OCB construct, and four new military OCB antecedents. Opportunities and implications for the use of military OCBs are developed and the limitations of the study are examined.

Developing Patient-Centered Preventative Care to Reduce Mobility Disability With Aging: Preferences From a Discrete Choice Experiment

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

Mobility disability is the most prevalent form of disability for older adults in the United States. A physical therapy mobility checkup (MC) under development is a patient-centered preventative physical therapy visit. It includes physical performance testing and education on physical performance as a valuable and modifiable health indicator. The purpose of this study was to identify the proportion of older adults willing to participate in an MC, the age at which they would initiate care, their desired frequency of participation, and the characteristics, or attributes, of the MC they preferred.

METHODS

In a cross-sectional study conducted at the Minnesota State Fair, adults older than 55 years answered survey questions about preventative health practices and completed a discrete choice experiment (DCE) to determine their preferences for the MC. Attributes studied in the DCE were visit duration, checkup content, education, and possible outcomes of participating in preventative care for mobility. Descriptive statistics characterized demographic information and survey responses. Conjoint choice modeling estimated the main effect for each DCE attribute.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

One hundred sixty-six older adults participated in the study. Seventy-eight percent indicated that they would choose an MC if available. Most participants (66%) believed that MCs should occur before 60 years of age and at least annually (68%). A 30-minute visit duration, which accounted for 84% of attribute importance, was preferred. Balance, the preferred content of the MC, accounted for 12% of the attribute importance. Preferences for educational content and possible outcomes of participation with preventative care aimed at preventing mobility loss were not statistically significant.

CONCLUSION

Older adults value preventative care for reducing mobility disability. They identified time efficiency and the inclusion of measures to assess balance as priorities for this preventative physical therapy visit.

Mechanisms of impulsive choice: Experiments to explore and models to map the empirical terrain

Impulsive choice is preference for a smaller-sooner (SS) outcome over a larger-later (LL) outcome when LL choices result in greater reinforcement maximization. Delay discounting is a model of impulsive choice that describes the decaying value of a reinforcer over time, with impulsive choice evident when the empirical choice-delay function is steep. Steep discounting is correlated with multiple diseases and disorders. Thus, understanding the processes underlying impulsive choice is a popular topic for investigation. Experimental research has explored the conditions that moderate impulsive choice, and quantitative models of impulsive choice have been developed that elegantly represent the underlying processes. This review spotlights experimental research in impulsive choice covering human and nonhuman animals across the domains of learning, motivation, and cognition. Contemporary models of delay discounting designed to explain the underlying mechanisms of impulsive choice are discussed. These models focus on potential candidate mechanisms, which include perception, delay and/or reinforcer sensitivity, reinforcement maximization, motivation, and cognitive systems. Although the models collectively explain multiple mechanistic phenomena, there are several cognitive processes, such as attention and working memory, that are overlooked. Future research and model development should focus on bridging the gap between quantitative models and empirical phenomena.

Validation of the Spanish version of the Neal, Griffin and Hart safety behavior scale

Objectives. The safety behavior scale (SBS), developed by Neal, Griffin and Hart, is one of the most widely used conceptualizations in the field of occupational safety. Previous studies have evaluated the psychometric properties of this scale in different populations. However, few validation studies have been conducted in the Latin American context. To fill these gaps in the literature, this study aimed to assess the validity, reliability and measurement invariance of this instrument in the context of the Latin American mining industry. Methods. Data were collected from 398 workers from Ecuadorian mining companies. The questionnaire was translated into Spanish following a back-translation process. The latent factorial structure of the SBS was explored by estimating a series of confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and exploratory equation modeling (ESEM) models. Results. The analyses showed that the two correlated first-order factor CFA representation was the most appropriate model for the data. Measurement invariance by age, type of contract and firm size was also confirmed. Conclusions. The SBS is a valid and reliable measure of safety behavior. In addition, this study determined the applicability of this instrument in the Latin American context, which enhances opportunities for future research in the region.

The use of self-protective measures to prevent COVID-19 spread: an application of the health belief model

This study uses a health belief model to examine the preventive behavioral orientation or self-protective measures adopted by people in the face of the current COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 603 participants were selected from the city of Bangalore, India. The data was collected through an online survey with participants' age varying between 17 and 54 and mean as 23 years (SD = 4.32). The findings revealed that perceived barrier has significant negative impact, while perceived threat, perceived consequences, perceived benefits, community and individual self-efficacy, and general health cues have a positive influence on an individual's intention to follow self-protective measures against COVID-19. Based on the constructs of the health belief model, this study proposes multiple health-related interventions to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

Safety management implementation drivers for construction projects: a structural equation modelling approach

The construction industry is one of the hazardous fields due to its exceptional environment. Therefore, this work aimed to assess the essential drivers needed for employing safety management in the Palestinian construction industry. The drivers for safety management were recognized from earlier literature, where the questionnaires were dispersed to professionals from construction projects. The exploratory factor analysis (EFA) technique was then performed to contextually adjust the identified drivers. The results showed that safety management drivers could be categorized into three constructs: management, awareness and policy. In addition, partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) was performed to generate the safety management driver's model. The results indicated that management drivers were vital drivers for adopting safety management. The study's findings would act as a reference for construction stakeholders to decrease danger and enhance the construction project's success via implementing safety management drivers.

Psychometric properties of sum scores and factor scores differ even when their correlation is 0.98: A response to Widaman and Revelle

Commentary in Widaman and Revelle (2022) argued that sum scoring is justified as long as unidimensionality holds because sum score reliability is defined. My response begins with a review of the literature supporting the perspective we adopted in the original article. I then conduct simulation studies to assess the psychometric properties of sum scores created using Widaman and Revelle's justification relative to scores created by the weighted factor score approach in the original article. In my simulations, I generate data where sum and factor scores are correlated at 0.96 or 0.98 because high factor-sum score correlations are often used to support the contention that sum and factor scores have interchangeable psychometric properties. I explore (a) correlations between estimated scores and true scores, (b) classification accuracy of sum and factor scores, and (c) reliability of sum and factor scores. Results show that factor scores have (a) higher correlations with true scores (Δ = 0.02-0.04), (b) higher sensitivity (Δ = 4-8 percentage points), and (c) higher reliability (Δ = 0.04-0.07). Factor score performance metrics also have less sampling variability in most conditions. Psychometric properties of sum scores-even when highly correlated with factor scores-remain less desirable than those of factor scores. Additional considerations like models with multiple factors and measurement invariance are also discussed. Essentially, even if accepting Widaman and Revelle's justification for sum scoring, it is uncertain whether researchers generally would want to sum score after fitting a factor analysis unless sum and factor scores correlate at (and not merely close to) 1.00.

(Why) Is Misinformation a Problem?

In the last decade there has been a proliferation of research on misinformation. One important aspect of this work that receives less attention than it should is exactly why misinformation is a problem. To adequately address this question, we must first look to its speculated causes and effects. We examined different disciplines (computer science, economics, history, information science, journalism, law, media, politics, philosophy, psychology, sociology) that investigate misinformation. The consensus view points to advancements in information technology (e.g., the Internet, social media) as a main cause of the proliferation and increasing impact of misinformation, with a variety of illustrations of the effects. We critically analyzed both issues. As to the effects, misbehaviors are not yet reliably demonstrated empirically to be the outcome of misinformation; correlation as causation may have a hand in that perception. As to the cause, advancements in information technologies enable, as well as reveal, multitudes of interactions that represent significant deviations from ground truths through people's new way of knowing (intersubjectivity). This, we argue, is illusionary when understood in light of historical epistemology. Both doubts we raise are used to consider the cost to established norms of liberal democracy that come from efforts to target the problem of misinformation.

Network Structure of Autism Spectrum Disorder Behaviors and Its Evolution in Preschool Children: Insights from a New Longitudinal Network Analysis Method

Network modeling of the social, communication and restrictive/repetitive behaviors (RRBs) included in the definition of Autism Spectrum Disorder was performed. The Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R) assessed behaviors in 139 pre-school cases at two cross-sections that averaged 34.8 months apart. Cross-sectional networks were based on the correlation matrix of the ADI-R behavioral items and the "bootCross" method was developed and enabled the estimation of a longitudinal network. At both stages, RRB items/nodes formed a consistent peripheral cluster, while social and communication nodes formed a core cluster that diverged with time. These differences in the nature and evolution of the RRB and socio-communicative dimensions indicate that their inter-behavior dynamics are very different. The most central behaviors across stages are proposed as prime targets for efficient therapeutic intervention.

On care infrastructures and health practices: How people in health promotion programmes try to change their everyday life

This paper contributes to challenging common behavioural or cognitive explanations for health and wellbeing outcomes, focussing on social practices through which people, with the help of other subjects, try to improve their health conditions. To renew the debate about health promotion, my work is placed at the intersection between the sociology of health and illness and science and technology studies, adopting the concepts of care infrastructures and health practices that are introduced in the next section. With this goal, my paper draws on a qualitative study concerning a Workplace Health Promotion programme aimed at reducing the risks of Type-2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases among sedentary workers. The findings illustrate how a care infrastructure in the field of health promotion is designed, put to work, repaired and 'put aside' in relation to two health practices ('doing physical activity' and 'following the Mediterranean diet'). Drawing on the presented case, I show how the change in daily habits in the fields of nutrition and physical activity is a collective effort involving different spheres of life, connecting human and non-human elements and bringing out affective intensities among them.

Associations between dietary variety, portion size and body weight: prospective evidence from UK Biobank participants

'Dietary variety' has been identified as a factor associated with food intake. Whilst this relationship may have longer-term benefits for body weight management when eating low-energy, nutrient-dense foods, it may increase the risk of overconsumption (and body adiposity) when foods are high energy density. This study sought to further explore pathways underpinning the relationship between dietary variety and body weight, by considering energy density as a moderating factor and portion size as a mediating factor in this relationship. Using prospective data from the UK Biobank, dietary variety scores (DVS), cumulative portion size and energy density were derived from 24-h dietary recall questionnaires at baseline and follow-up. BMI, whole-body fat percentage and fat-free mass were included as outcomes. Contrary to predictions, linear multiple regression models found some evidence of a negative, direct association between DVS and body weight outcomes at baseline (b = -0·13). Though dietary variety was significantly associated with larger portions across time points (b = 41·86-82·64), a moderated mediation effect was not supported at baseline or follow-up (Index ≤ 0·035). Taken together, these findings provide population-level evidence to support a positive association between variety and food intake, which in turn has potential implications for body weight management, both in terms of moderating food intake and benefitting diet quality.

When Objective Ambivalence Predicts Subjective Ambivalence: An Affect-Cognition Matching Perspective

Understanding when people are likely to feel ambivalent is important, as ambivalence is associated with key attitude outcomes, such as attitude-behavior consistency. Interestingly, the presence of conflicting positive and negative reactions (objective ambivalence) is weakly related to feeling conflicted (subjective ambivalence). We tested a novel situation that can influence the correspondence between objective and subjective ambivalence: whether a message and a recipient's topic match in affective versus cognitive orientation. When a person encounters a message with an affective or cognitive match to the topic, conflicting reactions may be more accessible, increasing feelings of ambivalence. Across five studies, greater objective-subjective ambivalence correspondence occurred with an affective-cognitive match between message and topic orientation. Studies 4 and 5 also demonstrated that this primarily occurred when the message was counterattitudinal. This work contributes to the literature explaining the gap between measures of objective and subjective ambivalence as well as how messages can influence attitude strength properties.

Loss aversion in the control of attention

Loss aversion is a psychological bias where an increase in loss is perceived as being larger than an equivalent increase in gain. In the present study, two experiments were conducted to explore whether attentional control reflects loss aversion. Participants performed a visual search task. On each trial, a red target and a green target were presented simultaneously, and participants were free to search for either one. Participants always gained points when they searched for a gain color target (e.g., red). However, they gained or lost points when they searched for a gain-loss color target (e.g., green). In Experiment 1, the expected values of the gain color and the gain-loss color were equal. Therefore, for maximizing the reward, participants did not need to preferably search for a particular color. However, results showed that participants searched for the gain color target more than the gain-loss color target, suggesting stronger attentional control for the gain color than the gain-loss color. In Experiment 2, even though the expected value of the gain-loss color was greater than that of the gain color, attention was allocated to the gain color more than to the gain-loss color. The results imply that attentional control can operate in accordance with the loss aversion principle when the boundary conditions for loss aversion in a repeated binary decision-making task were met.

"What their expectations could be": a narrative study of mothers and service providers in paediatric rehabilitation

PURPOSE

To better understand and visualise how and why mothers' and service providers' expectations for therapy can change over time spanning their journeys and careers in the paediatric rehabilitation system.

METHODS

Narrative analysis was used to construct two parallel collective stories that illustrate and explain phases and turning points of developing expectations. Five mothers and nine service providers participated in interviews discussing their expectations when new and more experienced with therapy.

RESULTS

Each collective story had five chapters illustrating how expectations became more relational, controllable, and informed. For mothers, the chapters were: (1) expecting therapy to be a saviour; (2) being turned away and alone; (3) expecting to advocate from necessity; (4) finding new solutions in the environment; and (5) expecting to combine mother and service provider expertise. For service providers, the chapters were: (1) expecting to rescue and fix; (2) searching for an alternative sense of professional worth; (3) expecting to lose control; (4) being the authentic self before expected self; and (5) expecting the unexpected.

CONCLUSIONS

Mothers' experiences with feeling alone and learning ways to modify their child's environments, and service providers' experiences with feeling inadequate and embracing authenticity, were essential to the developmental trajectories of expectations.Implications for Rehabilitation:Mapping expectations for therapy on a line graph shaped as a wave shows promise in reflecting the developmental trajectory of mothers' and service providers' expectations over time.Service providers should become aware of how to work with three distinct groups of mothers as determined by the phase of expectations for therapy they are currently experiencing (i.e., hyped, disillusioned, or enlightened).Therapy programmes can optimise expectations for therapy through redesigns that emphasise elements of networking, self-compassion, ethics, and authenticity.

Mass behaviour change amid COVID-19: How public health information and social norms explain the transformation

COVID-19 is a severe and ongoing threat globally, with the spread disrupting lives and society. Despite the developments of vaccines, the key measure to reduce the transmission of variants has stemmed from mass changes to personal behaviours. COVID-19 pandemic offers a unique context, where the protection behaviours enacted by an individual are necessary to keep the community safe. A social psychological perspective can be used to understand the reasons for adherence to policies and determine what other factors can shape preventive behaviours. To resolve this, in partnership with health consumers we use an online survey, with the findings substantiating preventive behaviours are positively related to COVID-19 information access and descriptive norms. Additionally, findings demonstrate the mediating role of injunctive norms on preventive behaviour suggesting that policy makers can influence decision-making by promoting health information that provides guidance on acceptable behaviours, but also demonstrates subsequent success. The integrity of the model is substantiated by partial least squares (PLS) testing.

The Mediating Effects of Psychological Capital and Academic Self-Efficacy on Learning Outcomes of College Freshmen

This study was an investigation of the relationship between past and present learning experiences of first-year college students and of how the psychological capital and academic self-efficacy they had accrued from past learning experiences were correlated with their current learning engagement. Longitudinal data were collected to examine how students' learning experiences in high school impacted their learning in college. Structural equation modeling (SEM) and bootstrapping techniques were employed in data analysis. Results indicated that psychological capital and academic self-efficacy functioned as mediators between students' past learning experience and present learning engagement. Overall, the findings highlight the importance of these two psychological constructs and suggest that postsecondary institutions should provide learning environments that support these factors to ensure student success.

A standardised set of images for judgements of proportion

In the present work, we present normative data for a set of 39 original clipart-style images that can be used as material in studies involving judgements of proportion. The original images are drawings that depict different day-to-day scenarios (e.g., lighted windows in a building; books on a shelf) and each has seven variants of different proportions (from 20% to 80%) belonging to different categories (discrete vs continuous; social vs non-social; natural vs artificial; stimuli physical dimensions; number of referents). Normative data for these images are presented in an interactive database (available at https://judgment-images-and-norms.shinyapps.io/estimates_interactive/ ), corresponding to the means of proportion estimates (in percentage form), the perceived ease of making such estimates, the perceived level of familiarity and liking for each image, and the relationships between these variables. In the paper, we analyse the data at an individual level, addressing how the latter judgements are related to the proportion estimates, how those estimates are related to objective proportions, and how these relationships are moderated by image category. The analyses presented in this paper aim to aid readers in selecting images that enable them to better address specific influences on proportional estimates or to control for those influences in their studies.

Drivers of consumers' behavioral intention toward private umbilical cord blood banking: a review

Immunitary bioeconomy encompasses a significant share of the bioeconomy that is accompanied by a ‎high degree of complexity and various religious and ethical controversies for both customers and the ‎service providers. Compared to blood banking, these complexities are more substantial for the ‎new state-of-the-art technology of umbilical cord blood (UCB) banking, in which the viable ‎therapeutically active substance of cord blood (i.e., cord blood stem cells (CBSCs)) is banked for much ‎less likely future demand. It became even more complicated when we knew that the main three types ‎of cord blood banking industry (i.e., private, public, or hybrid models) are not the same regarding ‎economic, ‎ethical, and even social considerations. The present paper aims to review and discuss the ‎main drivers of behavioral intention among the customers of private UCB banking. We focused on ‎private UCB banking because, although there is a low likelihood of childs' future need for their siblings' ‎CBSCs, there is an unnecessary growing demand for using private UCB banking services. Based on the ‎previously published pieces of research, we discussed five main influential factors (i.e., awareness, ‎reference group, usability, disease history, and price) that can affect the customers' risk perception ‎‎(and further their behavioral intention) to preserve their child UCB for private applications. Finally, we ‎concluded that private UCB banking must not be considered a commercial activity, and ethically healthcare ‎managers must be more actively involved in ‎facilitating the proper flow of information among the ‎customers.

How Does the Number of Response Options Impact the Psychometric Properties of the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale?

The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale is the most frequently used measure of self-esteem in the social sciences. These items are often administered with a different number of response options, but it is unclear how the number of response options impacts the psychometric properties of this measure. Across three experiments (Ns = 739, 2,358, and 1,461), we evaluated how different response options of the Rosenberg influenced (a) coefficient alpha estimates, (b) distributions of scores, and (c) associations with criterion-related variables. Observed coefficient alpha estimates were lowest for a 2-point format compared with response formats with more options. However, supplemental analyses using ordinal alpha pointed to similar estimates across conditions. Using four or more response options better approximated a normal distribution for observed summary scores. We found no consistent evidence that criterion-related correlations increased with more response options. Collectively, these results suggest that the Rosenberg should be administered with at least four response options and we favor a 5-point Likert-type response format.

Psychosocial Perspective on Problem Gambling: The role of Social Relationships, Resilience, and COVID-19 Worry

The COVID-19 pandemic has amplified several psychosocial risks and problem behaviors among vulnerable individuals. Given that gambling has high addictive potential, it is important to consider the underlying mechanisms of problem gambling. This study examined psychosocial factors associated with pandemic-time problem gambling.Cross-sectional data were gathered via an online survey of 18-75-year-old Finnish, Swedish, and British respondents (n = 2,022) who reported having gambled at least occasionally during the pandemic. Measures included problem gambling, loneliness, COVID-19 worry, social support, and psychological resilience. Control variables included gender, age, and education. Structural equation modeling was used as an analytical technique.Loneliness was found to be associated with problem gambling. While COVID-19 worry was not directly associated with problem gambling, it predicted higher loneliness, which in turn was associated with problem gambling. Evidence was not found regarding the protective role of resilience or social support in problem gambling. However, social support was found to be associated with higher problem gambling severity. Male gender and younger age were associated with problem gambling.The results bring insight into underlying vulnerabilities regarding problem gambling during the pandemic. More focus should be placed on the quality and sources of social support, as well as on how psychosocial risk and protective factors might work differently among different populations of gamblers.

Joy at work and vocational identity during COVID-19: A structural equation model

OBJECTIVE

This study aims to explore the interrelations between joy at work, vocational identity, and COVID-19-related latent variables.

DESIGN

A cross-sectional design was adopted to survey 253 registered nurses through nursing organizations and social networking sites during the time of the COVID-19 pandemic.

METHODS

Structural Equation Modeling through Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) was employed to accurately analyze and estimate relationships among joy at work, vocational identity, and COVID-19-related constructs in compliance with published standards and guidelines.

RESULTS

Thirty-one items received convergent validity measures to represent the five study constructs related to joy at work, vocational identity, and Work life Impact of COVID-19 pandemic: Meaning, Engagement, and Growth (MEG), Compassion, Sensitivity, and Respect (CSR), Trust, Support, and Flexibility (TSF), Vocational Identity Questionnaire (VIQ), and Work life Impact of COVID-19 pandemic (CI). The generated model exhibited good model fit and consistent quality indices. The data fit statistically with the model: (Average Path Coefficient = 0.195, p < 0.000); Average R-Squared = 0.156, p < 0.003; Average Adjusted R-Squared = 0.151, p < 0.004; Average Variance Inflation Factor = 2.193 (within the ideal range); Average Full collinearity VIF = 2.388 (within the ideal range), and Tenenhaus Goodness of Fit (GoF) = 0.329. The perceived Work life Impact of COVID-19 pandemic (CI) was a significant predictor of joy at work constructs (MEG, CSR, and TSF) and VIQ with direct effects. It also exerted a negative influence over MEG and TSF, but positively on CSR and VIQ. Notably, joy at work constructs significantly mediated the effects of CI on VIQ.

CONCLUSION

A structural model was developed that offers insights and a parsimonious explanation for the interrelations of COVID-19, joy at work, and vocational identity variables. The pandemic unquestionably influences the nurses' perceived joy, sense of calling, and meaning in life's work, and joy at work enhances nurses' work-life worth during challenging times.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

An increased understanding of nurses' joy at work during challenging times can potentially influence work culture, informs individual nurses, nurse leaders, and healthcare systems in all professional domains of practice and provides the foundational information to identify barriers to joy and strategies that enhance joy.

Thrombus imaging characteristics within acute ischemic stroke: similarities and interdependence

BACKGROUND

The effects of thrombus imaging characteristics on procedural and clinical outcomes after ischemic stroke are increasingly being studied. These thrombus characteristics - for eg, size, location, and density - are commonly analyzed as separate entities. However, it is known that some of these thrombus characteristics are strongly related. Multicollinearity can lead to unreliable prediction models. We aimed to determine the distribution, correlation and clustering of thrombus imaging characteristics based on a large dataset of anterior-circulation acute ischemic stroke patients.

METHODS

We measured thrombus imaging characteristics in the MR CLEAN Registry dataset, which included occlusion location, distance from the intracranial carotid artery to the thrombus (DT), thrombus length, density, perviousness, and clot burden score (CBS). We assessed intercorrelations with Spearman's coefficient (ρ) and grouped thrombi based on 1) occlusion location and 2) thrombus length, density and perviousness using unsupervised clustering.

RESULTS

We included 934 patients, of which 22% had an internal carotid artery (ICA) occlusion, 61% M1, 16% M2, and 1% another occlusion location. All thrombus characteristics were significantly correlated. Higher CBS was strongly correlated with longer DT (ρ=0.67, p<0.01), and moderately correlated with shorter thrombus length (ρ=-0.41, p<0.01). In more proximal occlusion locations, thrombi were significantly longer, denser, and less pervious. Unsupervised clustering analysis resulted in four thrombus groups; however, the cohesion within and distinction between the groups were weak.

CONCLUSIONS

Thrombus imaging characteristics are significantly intercorrelated - strong correlations should be considered in future predictive modeling studies. Clustering analysis showed there are no distinct thrombus archetypes - novel treatments should consider this thrombus variability.

The development of The Epileptic Seizure Parental Burden Scale: A validity and reliability study

OBJECTIVE

It is common for parents to shoulder the burden of care for their children with chronic diseases. However, there are no robust scales to measure the burden of care of parents of children with epilepsy. This study aimed to develop the "Epileptic Seizure Parental Burden Scale (ESPBS)" and evaluate its psychometric properties.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This was a methodological study. The sample consisted of 333 voluntary parents of children with epilepsy. Data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS v. 25) at a significance level of p < .05. Content validity, item-total correlation, explanatory factor analysis (EFA), confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), the "upper- and lower-27 percent rule," Cronbach's alpha coefficient, and the split-half reliability method were used for psychometric analysis.

RESULTS

The scale consisted of 15 items and two subscales. The Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) was 0. 961, for which Bartlett's test of sphericity was significant (X2 = 5079.527, p < .001), indicating sampling adequacy and correlation between the items for factor analysis. The scale had item-total item correlations of 0.311 to 0.741. The Explanatory Factor Analysis (EFA) revealed a two-factor structure. According to the confirmatory factor analysis, x2/df, GFI, AGFI, CFI, and RMSEA were 2.012, 0.93, 0.91, 0.97, and 0.055, respectively. These values were very close to a good fit. The items had factor loadings of 0.508 to 0.890. The total scale explained 60.432% of the total variance. The scale had a Cronbach's alpha of 0.93. The split-half reliability indicated a significant (p < .001) and high (r = 0.890) correlation.

CONCLUSION

The Epileptic Seizure Parental Burden Scale (ESPBS) has high psychometric properties. It is a valid and reliable instrument that can measure the epileptic seizure burden of parents of children with epilepsy.

Advertising appeals effectiveness: a systematic literature review

Positive, negative and coactive appeals are used in advertising. The evidence base indicates mixed results making practitioner guidance on optimal advertising appeals difficult. This study aims to identify the most effective advertising appeals and it seeks to synthesize relevant literature up to August 2019. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses framework a total of 31 studies were identified and analyzed. Emotional appeals, theory utilization, materials, results and quality were examined. Across multiple contexts, results from this review found that positive appeals were more often effective than coactive and negative appeals. Most studies examined fear and humour appeals, reflecting a literature skew towards the two emotional appeals. The Effective Public Health Practice Project framework was applied to assess the quality of the studies and identified that there remains opportunity for improvement in research design of advertising studies. Only one-third of studies utilized theory, signalling the need for more theory testing and application in future research. Scholars should look at increasing methodological strength by drawing more representative samples, establishing strong study designs and valid data collection methods. In the meantime, advertisers are encouraged to employ and test more positive and coactive advertising appeals.

Deceitful Hints: a Meta-Analytic Review of the Part-List Cuing Impairment in Recall

A large body of research in the study of memory has accumulated to date on the part-list cuing impairment in recall. This phenomenon refers to the lower recall of studied information in the presence of some studied words provided as retrieval cues compared to when no cues are provided. We review the current literature on the part-list cuing impairment in recall and report a meta-analysis utilizing the procedural and statistical information obtained from 109 samples (N = 5,605). In each experiment, participants studied a list of words and subsequently performed a recall task either in the presence or absence of part-list cues. The meta-analysis shows that the part-list cuing impairment is a robust, medium-sized impairment (Cohen, 1988). This recall impairment was not significantly sensitive to the number of study items provided, the relationship among study items, the number of part-list cues provided, the amount of time provided for recall, or certain other factors of interest. Our analyses also demonstrate that longer retention periods between study and retrieval mitigate the part-list cuing impairment in recall. We discuss the implications of meta-analysis results for elements of experimental design, the findings of past literature, as well as the underlying theoretical mechanisms proposed to account for this impairment in recall and the applied consequences of this recall impairment.

Rating norms should be calculated from cumulative link mixed effects models

Studies which provide norms of Likert ratings typically report per-item summary statistics. Traditionally, these summary statistics comprise the mean and the standard deviation (SD) of the ratings, and the number of observations. Such summary statistics can preserve the rank order of items, but provide distorted estimates of the relative distances between items because of the ordinal nature of Likert ratings. Inter-item relations in such ordinal scales can be more appropriately modelled by cumulative link mixed effects models (CLMMs). In a series of simulations, and with a reanalysis of an existing rating norms dataset, we show that CLMMs can be used to more accurately norm items, and can provide summary statistics analogous to the traditionally reported means and SDs, but which are disentangled from participants' response biases. CLMMs can be applied to solve important statistical issues that exist for more traditional analyses of rating norms.

Shape of my likes: how explicit and implicit reference frames shape the liking of insect-based protein bar

A high-protein bar incorporating mealworm powder was developed. The impact of explicit and implicit frame formation on the acceptance and sensory characteristics of this target bar was investigated by comparing it with four commercial protein bars for a total of 275 consumers. To construct the explicit frame, consumers watched a video clip about each frame (environment/nutrition/meal replacement) just before the evaluation. In the no-explicit-frame group, five protein bars were evaluated without video priming. The control group tasted the target sample only without any information. The implicit framework formed during the progress of exposure to various protein bar samples had a greater influence than explicit cues on the acceptance of the target. Promoting the nutritional and environmental merits of edible insects was not sufficient to improve the acceptability of the insect-incorporated protein bar. The liking decreased significantly with the inclusion of the commercial samples during the progress of sequential monadic serving.

Exploring the interplay of dopaminergic genotype and parental behavior in relation to executive function in early childhood

Child genotype is an important biologically based individual difference conferring differential sensitivity to the effect of parental behavior. This study explored dopaminergic polygenic composite × parental behavior interactions in relation to young children's executive function. Participants were 135 36-month-old children and their mothers drawn from a prospective cohort followed longitudinally from pregnancy. A polygenic composite was created based on the number of COMT, DAT1, DRD2, and DRD4 alleles associated with increased reward sensitivity children carried. Maternal negative reactivity and responsiveness were coded during a series of structured mother-child interactions. Executive function was operationalized as self-control and working memory/inhibitory control. Path analysis supported a polygenic composite by negative reactivity interaction for self-control. The nature of the interaction was one of diathesis-stress, such that higher negative reactivity was associated with poorer self-control for children with higher polygenic composite scores. This result suggests that children with a higher number of alleles may be more vulnerable to the negative effect of negative reactivity. Negative reactivity may increase the risk for developing behavior problems in this population via an association with poorer self-control. Due to the small sample size, these initial findings should be treated with caution until they are replicated in a larger independent sample.

Changes in Dental Outcomes After Implementation of the Philadelphia Beverage Tax

INTRODUCTION

Beverage taxes are associated with declines in sugar-sweetened beverage sales and consumption, but few studies have evaluated the associations of these taxes with health outcomes. This study analyzed changes in dental decay after the implementation of the Philadelphia sweetened beverage tax.

METHODS

Electronic dental record data were obtained on 83,260 patients living in Philadelphia and control areas from 2014 to 2019. Difference-in-differences analyses compared the number of new Decayed, Missing, and Filled Teeth with that of new Decayed, Missing, and Filled Surfaces before (January 2014-December 2016) and after (January 2019-December 2019) tax implementation in Philadelphia and control patients. Analyses were conducted in older children/adults (aged ≥15 years) and younger children (aged <15 years). Subgroup analyses stratified by Medicaid status. Analyses were conducted in 2022.

RESULTS

The number of new Decayed, Missing, and Filled Teeth did not change after tax implementation in Philadelphia in panel analyses of older children/adults (difference-in-differences= -0.02, 95% CI= -0.08, 0.03) or younger children (difference-in-differences=0.07, 95% CI= -0.08, 0.23). There were similarly no post-tax changes in the number of new Decayed, Missing, and Filled Surfaces. However, in cross-sectional samples of patients on Medicaid, the number of new Decayed, Missing, and Filled Teeth was lower after tax implementation in older children/adults (difference-in-differences= -0.18, 95% CI= -0.34, -0.03; -22% decline) and younger children (difference-in-differences= -0.22, 95% CI= -0.46, 0.01; -30% decline), with similar results for number of new Decayed, Missing, and Filled Surfaces.

CONCLUSIONS

The Philadelphia beverage tax was not associated with reduced tooth decay in the general population, but it was associated with reduced tooth decay in adults and children on Medicaid, suggesting potential health benefits for low-income populations.

The effect of private self-consciousness on the intention to receive the COVID-19 vaccine

<b>Background:</b> Although COVID-19 vaccines have been developed, the number of people willing to receive the vaccine has not yet reached the level for herd immunity. Using the health belief model with governmental information support, this study examined private self-consciousness in combination with other factors that influence the intention to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.<br /> <b>Materials and methods:</b> The perceived susceptibility to and perceived seriousness of COVID-19, perceived benefits of and perceived barriers to the COVID-19 vaccine, governmental information support, private self-consciousness, and the intention to receive the vaccine were examined in 523 adults. The data were analyzed with partial least squares regression.<br /> <b>Results:</b> The results indicate that private self-consciousness reduces the effect of perceived susceptibility on the intention to receive the vaccine and the negative effect of the perceived barriers to receiving it on intention.<br /> <b>Conclusion:</b> The information provided by the public health department should focus on perceived seriousness and perceived benefits because they are not affected by private self-consciousness.

A Distinction Without a Difference? A Multi-Method Approach to Understanding PTSD and Depression Symptom Overlap Among Disaster-Exposed Adolescents

Among adolescents exposed to trauma, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) commonly co-occur. Despite the prevalence of comorbidity, the question of how PTSD and MDD are related and appropriate conceptual models for understanding their linkage in adolescence remains unclear. This study applies a multi-methodological approach to advance conceptual and theoretical understanding of the overlap between PTSD and MDD diagnoses/symptoms. We tested three methodological approaches with three distinct theoretical underpinnings on the structure of each disorder proposed in the literature: confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) with dimensional constructs, latent class analysis (LCA) with person-based categorical constructs, and network analysis with symptom-to-symptom associations. Across the three different analytical approaches, there was a significant overlap between PTSD and MDD. Overall, there was no compelling evidence for distinct boundaries between disorders among trauma-exposed adolescents. Instead, we found considerable evidence that the typical latent-construct-based conceptualizations, whether categorical or dimensional, may need revision.

Is it good to feel bad about littering? Conflict between moral beliefs and behaviors for everyday transgressions

People sometimes do things that they think are morally wrong. We investigate how actors' perceptions of the morality of their own behaviors affects observer evaluations. In Study 1 (n = 302), we presented participants with six different descriptions of actors who routinely engaged in a morally questionable behavior and varied whether the actors thought the behavior was morally wrong. Actors who believed their behavior was wrong were seen as having better moral character, but their behavior was rated as more wrong. In Study 2 (n = 391) we investigated whether perceptions of actor metadesires were responsible for the effects of actor beliefs on character judgments. We used the same stimuli and measures as in Study 1 but added a measure of the actor's perceived desires to engage in the behaviors. As predicted, the effect of actors' moral beliefs on judgments of their moral character was mediated by perceived metadesires. In Study 3 (n = 1092) we replicated these findings in a between-participants design and further found that the effect of actor beliefs on act and character judgments was moderated by participant beliefs about the general acceptability of the behavior.

Cognitive bias modification for paranoia (CBM-pa): a randomised controlled feasibility study in patients with distressing paranoid beliefs

BACKGROUND

Cognitive Bias Modification for paranoia (CBM-pa) is a novel, theory-driven psychological intervention targeting the biased interpretation of emotional ambiguity associated with paranoia. Study objectives were (i) test the intervention's feasibility, (ii) provide effect size estimates, (iii) assess dose-response and (iv) select primary outcomes for future trials.

METHODS

In a double-blind randomised controlled trial, sixty-three outpatients with clinically significant paranoia were randomised to either CBM-pa or an active control (text reading) between April 2016 and September 2017. Patients received one 40 min session per week for 6 weeks. Assessments were given at baseline, after each interim session, post-treatment, and at 1- and 3-months post-treatment.

RESULTS

A total of 122 patients were screened and 63 were randomised. The recruitment rate was 51.2%, with few dropouts (four out of 63) and follow-up rates were 90.5% (1-month) and 93.7% (3-months). Each session took 30-40 min to complete. There was no statistical evidence of harmful effects of the intervention. Preliminary data were consistent with efficacy of CBM-pa over text-reading control: patients randomised to the intervention, compared to control patients, reported reduced interpretation bias (d = -0.48 to -0.76), improved symptoms of paranoia (d = -0.19 to -0.38), and lower depressed and anxious mood (d = -0.03 to -0.29). The intervention effect was evident after the third session.

CONCLUSIONS

CBM-pa is feasible for patients with paranoia. A fully powered randomised control trial is warranted.

Examining thematic and emotional differences across Twitter, Reddit, and YouTube: The case of COVID-19 vaccine side effects

Social media discourse has become a key data source for understanding the public's perception of, and sentiments during a public health crisis. However, given the different niches which platforms occupy in terms of information exchange, reliance on a single platform would provide an incomplete picture of public opinions. Based on the schema theory, this study suggests a 'social media platform schema' to indicate users' different expectations based on previous usages of platform and argues that a platform's distinct characteristics foster distinct platform schema and, in turn, distinct nature of information. We analyzed COVID-19 vaccine side effect-related discussions from Twitter, Reddit, and YouTube, each of which represents a different type of the platform, and found thematic and emotional differences across platforms. Thematic analysis using k-means clustering algorithm identified seven clusters in each platform. To computationally group and contrast thematic clusters across platforms, we employed modularity analysis using the Louvain algorithm to determine a semantic network structure based on themes. We also observed differences in emotional contexts across platforms. Theoretical and public health implications are then discussed.

Gradual behaviour change towards meat reduction: Development and validation of a novel decisional balance scale

Meat reduction is gaining attention among consumers, marketers, policymakers and scientists. Yet little is known about decision-making processes and behaviour change towards meat reduction. This paper explores the applicability of the decisional balance (DB) framework to the field of meat reduction. A novel DB scale to measure the perceived importance of beliefs about meat reduction at different stages of behaviour change was developed and validated in two studies with German meat eaters. In Study 1 (N = 309), the item inventory was tested using an exploratory factor analysis and then validated in Study 2 (N = 809). The results yielded two higher-order DB factors (pros and cons), which were subdivided into five lower-order factors (perceived benefits of a plant-based diet, downsides of factory farming, health barriers, legitimation barriers and feasibility barriers). The pros and cons were summarised in a DB index. All DB factors and the DB index were tested for internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha ≥.70) and aspects of validity. The typical DB pattern of the pros and cons of behaviour change was confirmed: the cons outweighed the pros for consumers who did not intend to reduce meat consumption, while the pros outweighed the cons for consumers who intended to reduce meat consumption. The new DB scale for meat reduction has proven to be a suitable measure to gain insights into consumers' decision making and could be used to develop targeted meat reduction interventions.
