Abstract
O objetivo do presente estudo é realizar uma análise e discussão dos principais achados envolvendo o comportamento da imunoglobulina A salivar (IgA-s) em relação ao estímulo do exercício e evidenciar a importância de seu controle em atletas. O exercício físico é um importante modulador das características do sistema imune, sobretudo do comportamento da IgA-s, componente fundamental na proteção de infecções do trato respiratório superior (ITRS). No entanto, a relação direta entre baixas concentrações de IgA-s e ITRS precisa de mais evidências para ser confirmada. As concentrações de IgA-s durante e logo após um exercício intenso diminuem, deixando o indivíduo mais suscetível à infecção, porém, atletas envolvidos em atividades extenuantes não são clinicamente imunodeficientes, comparados com indivíduos sedentários. Essas modificações são transitórias, com retorno aos valores normais após aproximadamente 48 horas de repouso. A razão dessas alterações não é clara, mas se apresenta multifatorial: elevação de hormônios estressores; fatores nutricionais; ação de espécies reativas de oxigênio; e estresse psicológico. Apesar do efeito transitório das alterações provocadas nos elementos do sistema imune frente ao exercício, observa-se diferença na variabilidade da IgA-s em populações com diferentes níveis de condicionamento. Diferenças metodológicas - como o protocolo de exercício, o método de coleta, armazenamento e manipulação da saliva, a forma de expressão da IgA-s, o nível de hidratação, o controle da dieta, a sazonalidade do período de competição, a aclimatação entre outros fatores - devem ser levadas em consideração para comparação entre os estudos. Além disso, ajudam a explicar, em parte, os resultados adversos envolvendo exercício moderado e os intermitentes, em que se encontram aumento, redução e até ausência de alteração nos níveis de IgA-s. Investigações de elementos inovadores, como os toll-like receptors, e o avanço tecnológico podem colaborar para aumentar as evidências sobre o tema.

Abstract
A 4-h bout of exercise induces immunomodulatory effects. Peripheral blood was withdrawn before, and at 4, 8 and 24h after the start of exercise. RNA from the unfractionated white blood cells was analyzed using Agilent human 44K microarray. The expression profiles were sorted into seven clusters based on their unique time-dependent kinetics. In a separate experiment, cell-specific markers were collected and compared among the members in each cluster. Two clusters were assigned as representing neutrophils, one as NK cells, and another mostly as T cells. Three clusters seemed to be mixtures of several cell types. Extension of this approach to other systems is discussed.

Abstract
There are an expanding number of primary immunodeficiency diseases (PIDDs), each associated with unique diagnostic and therapeutic complexities. Limited data, however, exist supporting specific therapeutic interventions. Thus, a survey of PIDD management was administered to allergists/immunologists in the United States to identify current perspectives and practices. Among 405 respondents, the majority of key management practices identified were consistent with existing data and guidelines, including the provision of immunoglobulin therapy, immunoglobulin dosing and selective avoidance of live viral vaccines. Practices for which there are little specific data or evidence-based guidance were also examined, including evaluation of IgG trough levels for patients receiving immunoglobulin, use of prophylactic antibiotics and recommendations for complementary/alternative medicine. Here, variability applied to PIDD patients was identified. Differences between practitioners clinically focused upon PIDD and general allergists/immunologists were also identified. Thus, a need for expanded clinical research in PIDD to optimize management and potentially improve outcomes was defined.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Exhaustive exercise can be associated with short-term immune suppression, but moderate exercise such as tai chi chuan (TCC) has been shown to have beneficial effects on immunity. The mechanisms for the health benefits of exercise remain to be determined, and no potential biomarkers for these beneficial health effects have been identified. This study investigated serum proteomic markers in individuals participating in TCC exercise. METHODS Two-dimensional fluorescence difference gel electrophoresis was used to compare proteomic markers in 3 individuals before and after 12 weeks of TCC exercise. The different protein spots were identified by mass spectrometry and validated in an additional 20 individuals by western blot analysis. RESULTS We identified 39 protein spots for 18 proteins with a noticeable increase or decrease after TCC exercise. Validation of the differentially displayed proteins with 20 paired pre- and postexercise samples revealed a significant increase in complement factor H (P = 0.0034) associated with decreases in C1 esterase inhibitor (P = 0.0038) and complement factor B (P = 0.0029). CONCLUSIONS In this first study of proteomic biomarkers of TCC exercise, we found an increase in complement factor H associated with a decrease in complement factor B. Complement factor H is involved in protection from microangiopathy and macular degeneration and may represent a useful marker of the health effects of exercise.

Abstract
Phagocytosis and oxidative burst are critical host defense mechanisms in which neutrophils clear invading pathogens. Clearing phagocytic neutrophils by triggering apoptosis is an essential process for controlling inflammation. This study elucidates how various exercise bouts with/without hypoxia affected neutrophil bactericidal activity and subsequent apoptosis in humans. Fifteen sedentary males performed six distinct experimental tests in an air-conditioned normobaric hypoxia chamber: two normoxic exercises [strenuous exercise (SE; up to maximal O2consumption) and moderate exercise (ME; 50% maximal O2consumption for 30 min) while exposed to 21% O2], two hypoxic exercises (ME for 30 min while exposed to 12% and 15% O2), and two hypoxic exposures (resting for 30 min while exposed to 12% and 15% O2). The results showed that 1) plasma complement-C3a desArg/C4a desArg/C5a concentrations were increased, 2) expressions of L-selectin/lymphocyte functin-associated antigen-1/Mac-1/C5aR on neutrophils were enhanced, 3) phagocytosis of neutrophils to Esherichia coli and release of neutrophil oxidant products by E. coli were elevated, and 4) E. coli -induced phosphotidylserine exposure or caspase-3 activation of neutrophils were promoted immediately and 2 h after both 12% O2exposure at rest and with ME as well as normoxic SE. Although neither normoxic ME nor breathing 15% O2at rest influenced these complement- and neutrophil-related immune responses, ME at both 12% and 15% O2resulted in enhanced complement activation in the blood, expressions of opsonic/complement receptors on neutrophils, or the bactericidal activity and apoptosis of neutrophils. Moreover, the increased neutrophil oxidant production and apoptosis by normoxic SE and hypoxic ME were ameliorated by treating neutrophils with diphenylene iodonium (a NADPH oxidase inhibitor). Therefore, we conclude that ME at 12–15% O2enhances bactericidal capacity and facilitates the subsequent apoptosis of neutrophils.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite strong evidence of an inverse association of physical activity with postmenopausal breast cancer risk, whether a certain intensity or time of life of physical activity is most effective for lowering breast cancer risk is not known. METHODS In 118,899 postmenopausal women in the prospective NIH-AARP Diet and Health Study, we examined the relations of light and moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity during four periods of life ("historical": ages 15-18, 19-29, 35-39 years; "recent": past 10 years) to postmenopausal breast cancer risk. Physical activity was assessed by self-report at baseline, and 4287 incident breast cancers were identified over 6.6 years of follow-up. RESULTS In age-adjusted and multivariate Cox regression models, >7 hours/week of moderate-to-vigorous activity during the past 10 years was associated with 16% reduced risk of postmenopausal breast cancer (RR:0.84; 95%CI:0.76,0.93) compared with inactivity. The association remained statistically significant after adjustment for BMI (RR:0.87; 95%CI:0.78,0.96). Neither moderate-to-vigorous activity during other periods of life nor light intensity activity during any period of life was related to breast cancer risk, and associations did not vary by tumor characteristics. CONCLUSION A high level of recent, but not historical, physical activity of moderate-to-vigorous intensity is associated with reduced postmenopausal breast cancer risk. More precise recall of recent physical activity than activity in the distant past is one possible explanation for our findings.

Abstract
Multiple sclerosis is a chronic inflammatory CNS disease which accounts for functional impairment and lasting disability in young adults. Current studies demonstrate that physical activity in patients with MS counteracts depression and fatigue and may improve quality of life. Interventional studies have described a reduction of the functional impairment in MS patients. This report presents information on the effects of physical activity on the immune system and the release of neurotrophic factors, and highlights current data on a potential immunomodulatory effect of exercise in multiple sclerosis.

Abstract
An acute bout of exercise evokes mobilisation of lymphocytes into the bloodstream, which can be largely attributed to increases in CD8+ T lymphocytes (CD8TLs) and natural killer (NK) cells. Evidence further suggests that, even within these lymphocyte subsets, there is preferential mobilisation of cells that share certain functional and phenotypic characteristics, such as high cytotoxicity, low proliferative ability, and high tissue-migrating potential. These features are characteristic of effector-memory CD8TL subsets. The current study therefore investigated the effect of exercise on these newly-identified subsets. Thirteen healthy and physically active males (mean+/-SD: age 20.9+/-1.5 yr) attended three sessions: a control session (no exercise); cycling at 35% Watt(max) (low intensity exercise); and 85% Watt(max) (high intensity exercise). Each bout lasted 20 min. Blood samples were obtained before exercise, during the final min of exercise, and +15, and +60 min post-exercise. CD8TLs were classified into naïve, central memory (CM), effector-memory (EM), and CD45RA+ effector-memory (RAEM) using combinations of the cell surface markers CCR7, CD27, CD62L, CD57, and CD45RA. In parallel, the phenotypically distinct CD56(bright) 'regulatory' and CD56(dim) 'cytotoxic' NK subsets were quantified. The results show a strong differential mobilisation of CD8TL subsets (RAEM>EM>CM>naïve); during high intensity exercise the greatest increase was observed for RAEM CD8Tls (+450%) and the smallest for naïve cells (+84%). Similarly, CD56(dim) NK cells (+995%) were mobilised to a greater extent than CD56(bright) (+153%) NK cells. In conclusion, memory CD8TL that exhibit a high effector and tissue-migrating potential are preferentially mobilised during exercise. This finding unifies a range of independent observations regarding exercise-induced phenotypic and functional changes in circulating lymphocytes. The selective mobilisation of cytotoxic tissue-migrating subsets, both within the NK and CD8TL population, may enhance immune-surveillance during exercise.

Abstract
We determined the effect of long-term aerobic swimming training regimens of different intensities on colonic carcinogenesis in rats. Male Wistar rats (11 weeks old) were given 4 subcutaneous injections (40 mg/kg body weight each) of 1,2-dimethyl-hydrazine (DMH, dissolved in 0.9% NaCl containing 1.5% EDTA, pH 6.5), at 3-day intervals and divided into three exercise groups that swam with 0% body weight (EG1, N = 11), 2% body weight (EG2, N = 11), and 4% body weight of load (EG3, N = 10), 20 min/day, 5 days/week for 35 weeks, and one sedentary control group (CG, N = 10). At sacrifice, the colon was removed and counted for tumors and aberrant crypt foci. Tumor size was measured and intra-abdominal fat was weighed. The mean number of aberrant crypt foci was reduced only for EG2 compared to CG (26.21 +/- 2.99 vs 36.40 +/- 1.53 crypts; P < 0.05). Tumor incidence was not significantly different among groups (CG: 90%; EG1: 72.7%; EG2: 90%; EG3: 80%). Swimming training did not affect either tumor multiplicity (CG: 2.30 +/- 0.58; EG1: 2.09 +/- 0.44; EG2: 1.27 +/- 0.19; EG3: 1.50 +/- 0.48 tumors) or size (CG: 1.78 +/- 0.24; EG1: 1.81 +/- 0.14; EG2: 1.55 +/- 0.21; EG3: 2.17 +/- 0.22 cm(3)). Intra-abdominal fat was not significantly different among groups (CG: 10.54 +/- 2.73; EG1: 6.12 +/- 1.15; EG2: 7.85 +/- 1.24; EG3: 5.11 +/- 0.74 g). Aerobic swimming training with 2% body weight of load protected against the DMH-induced preneoplastic colon lesions, but not against tumor development in the rat.

Abstract
Despite the effectiveness of HAART in controlling HIV-1 replication, the emergence of drug-resistant viruses in infected patients and the severe side effects caused by the currently used drug regimens and the lack of an effective vaccine necessitate the continued search for new therapeutic strategies for prevention and therapy of HIV disease. Previously we reported that natural autoantibodies, recognizing peptide FTDNAKTI (peptide NTM1) derived from the C2 domain of HIV-1 gp120, contribute to the control of HIV disease. Here we demonstrated that sera from well-trained athletic (HIV-negative) subjects showed high reactivity with peptide NTM1. This result confirms that aerobic exercise training stimulates production of natural autoantibodies, which recognize peptide NTM1. Bioinformatics analysis indicates that these natural autoantibodies could slow down disease progression by blocking the superantigenic site on HIV-1 gp120. The results suggest that aerobic exercise training may be a promising non-toxic and inexpensive adjunctive anti-HIV therapy.

Abstract
Recent studies show that brief exercise alters circulating neutrophil and peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) gene expression, ranging from cell growth to both pro-and anti-inflammatory processes. These initial observations were made solely in males, but whether PBMC gene expression is altered by exercise in females is not known. Ten early-pubertal girls (8-11 yr old) and 10 late-pubertal girls (15-17 yr old) performed ten 2-min bouts of cycle ergometry ( approximately 90% peak heart rate) interspersed with 1-min rest intervals. Blood was obtained at rest and after exercise, and microarrays were performed in each individual subject. RNA was hybridized to Affymetrix U133+2.0 Arrays. Exercise induced significant changes in PBMC gene expression in early (1,320 genes)- and late (877 genes)-pubertal girls. The expression of 622 genes changed similarly in both groups. Exercise influenced a variety of established gene pathways (EASE < 0.04) in both older (6 pathways) and younger girls (11 pathways). Five pathways were the same in both groups and were functionally related to inflammation, stress, and apoptosis, such as natural killer cell-mediated cytotoxicity, antigen processing and presentation, B cell receptor signaling, and apoptosis. In summary, brief exercise alters PBMC gene expression in early- and late-pubertal girls. The pattern of change involves diverse genetic pathways, consistent with a global danger-type response, perhaps readying PBMCs for a range of physiological functions from inflammation to tissue repair that would be useful following a bout of physical activity.

Abstract
Chronically elevated circulating plasma glucocorticoid concentrations can have suppressive effects on immune function in mammals. House mice (Mus domesticus) that have been selectively bred for high voluntary wheel running exhibit chronically elevated (two-fold, on average) plasma corticosterone (CORT) levels and hence are an interesting model to study possible glucocorticoid-induced immune suppression. As an initial test of their immunocompetence, we compared the four replicate high runner (HR) lines with their four non-selected control (C) lines by subjecting them to infection by a parasitic nematode, Nippostrongylus brasiliensis. At generation 36 of the selection experiment, 10 adult males from each of the eight lines were inoculated subcutaneously with approximately 600 third-stage larval N. brasiliensis, and then sacrificed 12 days after injection. Neither spleen mass nor number of adult nematodes in the small intestine differed significantly between HR and C lines. However, the eight lines differed significantly in nematode counts, and the line means for nematode infestation were significantly positively related to baseline circulating CORT concentration measured in males from generations 34 and 39. Therefore, although selective breeding for high locomotor activity may not have resulted in a generally compromised immune response, results of this study are consistent with the hypothesis that glucocorticoids can have immunosuppressive effects.

Abstract
Despite great progress made in sports medicine, the physiological mechanism of moderate physical activity-induced physical fitness remains only partly understood. Combined with the hormetic characteristic of physical activity and property of allostasis, we first propose the hormesis induced allostatic buffering capacity enhancement as a physiological mechanism to explain the moderate physical activity-induced physical fitness. As stressful stimulus, physical activity can induce several stresses in the host, including eustress ('good stress') and distress ('bad stress'), which may have both positive and negative effects. Too little or too much physical activities will introduce too weak eustress or too strong distress and result in allostasis load through weakening allostatic buffering capacity or damaging allostatic buffering capacity respectively. However, moderate physical activities will introduce eustress and contribute to the hormesis induced allostatic buffering capacity enhancement, which benefits organism.

Abstract
Monocytes are a heterogeneous group of cells, the relative distribution of which change in peripheral blood following a strenuous bout of aerobic exercise. Monocyte subtypes can be identified in blood based on the cell surface expression of CD14 and CD16: classic (CD14(++bright)/CD16(-negative)) and the CD16(+dim) (CD14(++bright)/CD16(+dim)) and CD16(++bright) (CD14(+dim)/CD16(++bright)) pro-inflammatory subtypes. Whole monocyte population changes in TLR2, TLR4 and HLA.DR expression have previously been documented after acute exercise without accounting for relative changes in monocyte subpopulations, therefore, this study examined their expression on classic and pro-inflammatory monocyte subsets following 45min of treadmill running at 75% VO(2max). Mononuclear cells isolated from the peripheral blood of moderately trained male subjects (n=15) before (PRE), immediately after (POST) and 1h after (1H) exercise were assessed for TLR2, TLR4 and HLA.DR expression on blood monocytes and their subpopulations using three-colour flow cytometry. Compared to PRE, the proportion of CD14+/CD16+ monocytes was 27% greater POST and 49% less at 1H and was associated with changes in the CD16(++bright) pro-inflammatory subtype (p<0.05). TLR2 expression was 12% lower on CD16(+dim) monocytes POST (p<0.05), whereas TLR4 and HLA.DR expression on total monocytes was 12% and 22% lower at 1H, respectively, and was attributed to changes in the classic (p<0.05) and not the pro-inflammatory subsets (p>0.05). We conclude that acute exercise causes localised changes in TLR2, TLR4 and HLA.DR expression within specific blood monocyte subpopulations, and could therefore be occurring at the cellular level. Such alterations might have significant implications for modulation of post-exercise immune surveillance.

Abstract
Chronic noncommunicable diseases (CNCDs), which include cardiovascular disease, some cancers, for example, colon cancer, breast cancer, and type 2 diabetes, are reaching epidemic proportions worldwide. It has now become clear that low-grade chronic inflammation is a key player in the pathogenesis of most CNCDs. Given that regular exercise offers protection against all causes of mortality, primarily by protection against atherosclerosis and insulin resistance, we suggest that exercise may exert some of its beneficial health effects by inducing anti-inflammatory actions. Recently, IL-6 was introduced as the first myokine, defined as a cytokine, which is produced and released by contracting skeletal muscle fibres, exerting its effects in other organs of the body. We suggest that skeletal muscle is an endocrine organ and that myokines may be involved in mediating the beneficial effects against CNCDs associated with low-grade inflammation.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION OR BACKGROUND Heavy exercise induces marked immunodepression, which is multifactorial in origin. Evidence showing clinical significance of this immunodepression is scarce. SOURCES OF DATA We assessed in a systematic manner whether physical activity or intensity of exercise increase susceptibility to upper respiratory tract infections (URTI). A literature search was performed using the keywords 'upper respiratory tract infections', 'athletes', 'exercise' and 'physical activity'. We considered all studies reporting of the effect of exercise, physical activity, sport and training on susceptibility to URTI. A total of 162 publications were identified and 30 studies were eligible (4 descriptive, 18 observational and 8 interventional). The 30 studies included 8595 athletes (5471 runners, 2803 swimmers) and 1798 non-athletes. AREAS OF AGREEMENT Moderate activity may enhance immune function, whereas prolonged, high-intensity exercise temporarily impairs the immune competence. Athletes, when compared with lesser active individuals, experience higher rate of URTI after training and competitions. In non-athletes, increasing physical activity is associated with a decreased risk of URTI. AREAS OF CONTROVERSY The relationship between exercise and URTI is affected by poorly known individual determinants such as genetic factors, fitness, nutritional status or atopy. Elite athletes may have a decreased susceptibility to URTI. GROWING POINTS AND AREAS TIMELY FOR DEVELOPING RESEARCH The dose-response relationship between immunodepression and risk for URTI during the weeks following heavy exercise. What are the clinically relevant methods to assess exercise-induced immunodepression? Is down-regulation of immunity after intense exercise a protective response to limit inflammation? Is there a role for nutritional or pharmaceutical interventions to reduce risk of URTI?

Abstract
The syndrome of cancer cachexia is accompanied by several alterations in lipid metabolism, and the liver is markedly affected. Previous studies showed that moderate exercise training may prevent liver fat accumulation through diminished delivery of lipids to the liver, increased hepatic oxidation and increased incorporation of triacylglycerol (TAG) into very low density lipoprotein (VLDL). Our aim was to examine the influence of moderate intensity training (8 weeks) upon TAG content, VLDL assembly and secretion, apolipoprotein B (apoB) and microsomal transfer protein (MTP) gene expression in the liver of cachectic tumour-bearing rats. Animals were randomly assigned to a sedentary control (SC), sedentary tumour-bearing (ST) or exercise-trained control (EC) or to an exercise trained tumour-bearing (ET) group. Trained rats ran on a treadmill (60% VO(2max)) for 60 min day(-1), 5 day week(-1), for 8 weeks. TAG content and the rate of VLDL secretion (followed for 3 h), as well as mRNA expression of apoB and MTP, and total cholesterol, VLDL-TAG, VLDL-cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-cholesterol) and tumour weight were evaluated. VLDL-cholesterol showed a decrease in ST (p < 0.05) in relation to SC. Serum TAG, VLDL-TAG and tissue TAG content were all increased in ST (p < 0.01), when compared with SC. ST showed a lower rate of VLDL secretion (p < 0.05) and reduced expression of apoB (p < 0.001) and MTP (p < 0.001), when compared with SC. These parameters were restored to control values (p < 0.05) when the animals were submitted to the exercise training protocol. Tumour weight decreased 10-fold after training (p < 0.001). It is possible to affirm, therefore, that endurance training promoted the re-establishment of lipid metabolism in cachectic tumour-bearing animals, especially in relation to VLDL secretion and assembly.

Abstract
Exercise stress is associated with an increased risk for upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) while moderate exercise has been associated with a decreased risk. We have shown that exercise stress can increase susceptibility (morbidity, symptom severity and mortality) to HSV-1 respiratory infection, but there is little evidence on the effects of stressful exercise on susceptibility to the principal etiological agents of human respiratory infections, including influenza viruses. This study examined the effects of stressful exercise on susceptibility to influenza virus (A/Puerto Rico/8/34 (H1N1)). Mice were assigned to one of two groups: exercise (Ex) or control (Con). Exercise consisted of a treadmill run to volitional fatigue ( approximately 120 min) performed on three consecutive days. Fifteen minutes after the last bout of exercise or rest, mice (n=20-21/group) were intranasally inoculated with a standardized dose of influenza virus (0.25 HAU). Mice were monitored daily for morbidity (time to sickness), symptom severity and mortality (time to death) for 21 days. Exercise stress was associated with an increase in susceptibility to infection (morbidity, mortality and symptom severity on days 6 and 7; P<0.05). These data from a controlled influenza virus challenge model add significantly to the growing body of evidence that severe exercise can increase susceptibility to URTI.

Abstract
Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are both idiopathic inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) that affect 0.5% of Canadians. As yet, there is no known cure for either disease, and symptoms are treated with an array of medicines. The objective of the present review was to present the role of exercise and its impact on all facets of IBD. Exercise has been speculated to be protective against the onset of IBD, but the literature is inconsistent and weak. Preliminary studies reveal that exercise training may be beneficial to reduce stress and symptoms of IBD. Current research also recommends exercise to help counteract some IBD-specific complications by improving bone mineral density, immunological response, psychological health, weight loss and stress management ability. However, the literature advises that some patients with IBD may have limitations to the amount and intensity of exercise that they can perform. In summary, exercise may be beneficial to IBD patients, but further research is required to make a convincing conclusion regarding its role in the management of IBD and to help establish exercise regimens that can account for each IBD patient's unique presentation.

Inadequate physical activity is linked to many chronic diseases. But the mechanisms that tie muscle activity to health are unclear. The transcriptional coactivator PGC1alpha has recently been shown to regulate several exercise-associated aspects of muscle function. We propose that this protein controls muscle plasticity, suppresses a broad inflammatory response and mediates the beneficial effects of exercise.

Abstract
This paper investigated the effect of jump training on blood biochemical parameters and neutrophil responses of diabetic rats. Male Wistar rats were divided into control, trained, diabetic and trained-diabetic groups. Diabetes was induced by i.v. injection of streptozotocin. Jump training consisted of six sets of ten jumps in water with overload of 50% of body mass with 1-min of resting, four times per week during 6 weeks. Plasma glucose, lactate, triacylglycerol and total cholesterol concentrations, differential leukocyte count, phagocytosis and anion superoxide production by neutrophils were evaluated. Diabetes caused hyperglycemia, hypertriacylglycerolemia, and body weight loss. Physical training reversed hypertriacylglycerolemia. Jump training increased phagocytosis and anion superoxide production by blood neutrophils from trained and trained-diabetic rats. Neutrophilia and lymphocytopenia occur in diabetic and trained-diabetic rats. Anaerobic jump training in diabetic rats reduced hypertriacylglycerolemia and increased neutrophil anion superoxide production. Phagocytosis was not altered in trained-diabetic rats.

Abstract
Previous studies have suggested that the asthmatic responses of airway inflammation, remodeling, and hyperresponsiveness (AHR) are interrelated; in this study, we used exercise to examine the nature of this interrelationship. Mice were sensitized and challenged with ovalbumin (OVA); mice were then exercised via running on a motorized treadmill at a moderate intensity. Data indicate that, within the lungs of OVA-treated mice, exercise attenuated the production of inflammatory mediators, including chemokines KC, RANTES, and MCP-1 and IL-12p40/p80. Coordinately, OVA-treated and exercised mice displayed decreases in leukocyte infiltration, including eosinophils, as compared with sedentary controls. Results also show that a single bout of exercise significantly decreased phosphorylation of the NFkappaB p65 subunit, which regulates the gene expression of a wide variety of inflammatory mediators. In addition, OVA-treated and exercised mice exhibited decreases in the levels of Th2-derived cytokines IL-5 and IL-13 and the prostaglandin PGE(2), as compared with sedentary controls. In contrast, results show that a single bout of exercise had no effect on AHR in OVA-treated mice challenged with increasing doses of aerosolized methacholine (0-50 mg/ml) as compared with sedentary mice. Exercise also had no effect on epithelial cell hypertrophy, mucus production, or airway wall thickening in OVA-treated mice as compared with sedentary controls. These findings suggest that a single bout of aerobic exercise at a moderate intensity attenuates airway inflammation but not AHR or airway remodeling in OVA-treated mice. The implication of these findings for the interrelationship between airway inflammation, airway remodeling, and AHR is discussed.

Abstract
Exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) is a consequence of evaporative water loss in conditioning the inspired air. The water loss causes cooling and dehydration of the airway surface. One acute effect of dehydration is the release of mediators, such as prostaglandins, leukotrienes, and histamine, that can stimulate smooth muscle, causing contraction and a change in vascular permeability. Inspiring cold air increases dehydration of the surface area and causes changes in bronchial blood flow. This article proposes that the pathogenesis of EIB in elite athletes relates to the epithelial injury arising from breathing poorly conditioned air at high flows for long periods of time or high volumes of irritant particles or gases. The evidence to support this proposal comes from many markers of injury. The restorative process after injury involves plasma exudation and movement of cells into the airways, a process repeated many times during a season of training. This process has the potential to expose smooth muscle to a wide variety of plasma- and cell-derived substances. The exposure to these substances over time can lead to an alteration in the contractile properties of the smooth muscle, making it more sensitive to mediators of bronchoconstriction. It is proposed that cold-weather athletes have airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) to pharmacologic agents as a result of epithelial injury. In those who are allergic, AHR can also be expressed as EIB. The role of beta(2)-receptor agonists in inhibiting and enhancing the development of AHR and EIB is discussed.

Abstract
Cross-sectional studies suggest that moderate physical activity is associated with enhanced resting immune function; however, few randomized controlled trials have investigated this link. We investigated the effect of 12-mo aerobic exercise, relative to stretching control, on in vitro immune function in a randomized, controlled trial of 115 postmenopausal, overweight, or obese sedentary women, aged 50-75 yr. The exercise goal was > or =45 min/day, 5 days/wk. Control women participated in 1 day/wk stretching classes. Immune markers (natural killer cell cytotoxicity, T-lymphocyte proliferation, immune cell counts and phenotypes, and serum immunoglobulins) were assessed at baseline, 3 mo, and 12 mo under strict blood-draw criteria. General estimation equations evaluated intervention effects at 3 and 12 mo, controlling for baseline. Of the 115 women who began the trial, blood samples were available from 109 at 3 mo (95%) and 108 at 12 mo (94%). From baseline to 12 mo, the exercise group participated in 87% of the prescribed physical activity minutes per week and increased maximal O(2) uptake by 13.8%; controls experienced no change in fitness. The main outcomes, natural killer cell cytotoxicity and T-lymphocyte proliferation, did not differ between groups at 3 and 12 mo. Secondary outcome and subgroup (e.g., stratification by baseline categories of body mass index, immune status, C-reactive protein, and age) analyses did not show any clear patterns of association. This 12-mo randomized, controlled trial showed no effect of aerobic exercise on in vitro immune function, despite excellent retention, high adherence, and demonstrable efficacy of the exercise intervention.

Abstract
Exercise stress is associated with an increased risk for upper respiratory tract infection (URTI). We have shown that consumption of the soluble oat fiber beta-glucan (ObetaG) can offset the increased risk for infection and decreased macrophage antiviral resistance following stressful exercise; however, the direct role of macrophages is unknown. This study examined the effect of macrophage depletion on the benefits of orally administered ObetaG on susceptibility to infection (morbidity, symptom severity, and mortality) following exercise stress. CL(2)MDP (Ex- H(2)O-CL(2)MDP, Ex-ObetaG-CL(2)MDP, Con-H(2)O-CL(2)MDP, Con-ObetaG-CL(2)MDP)-encapsulated liposomes were administered intranasally to deplete macrophages, and PBS (Ex-H(2)O-PBS, Ex-ObetaG-PBS, Con-H(2)O-PBS, Con-ObetaG-PBS)-encapsulated liposomes were given to macrophage-intact groups. Ex mice ran to volitional fatigue on a treadmill for 3 consecutive days, and ObetaG mice were fed a solution of 50% ObetaG in their drinking water for 10 consecutive days before infection. Fifteen minutes following the final bout of Ex or rest, mice were intranasally inoculated with 50 microl of a standardized dose of herpes simplex virus-1. Ex increased morbidity (P < 0.001) and symptom severity (P < 0.05) but not mortality (P = 0.09). The increase in morbidity and symptom severity was blocked by ObetaG consumption for 10 consecutive days before exercise and infection [morbidity (P < 0.001) and symptom severity (P < 0.05)]. Depletion of macrophages negated the beneficial effects of ObetaG on reducing susceptibility to infection following exercise stress, as evidenced by an increase in morbidity (P < 0.01) and symptom severity (P < 0.05). Results indicate that lung macrophages are at least partially responsible for mediating the beneficial effects of ObetaG on susceptibility to respiratory infection following exercise stress.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship of light and strenuous exercise, and self-reported change in exercise status, with different components of cognitive function, and gender differences in this relation, in a large, representative sample included in the Swedish National study on Aging and Care (SNAC). Eight-hundred-and-thirteen participants in age-cohorts from 60-96 years completed a wide range of cognitive function tests, the Mini Mental State Exam (MMSE) and survey questions concerning exercise behaviour and exercise change with light or strenuous intensity. ANCOVA, controlling for age, education, depression, functional status and co-morbidity, demonstrated a main effect for light exercise, but not for strenuous exercise, on five of the six cognitive tests and the MMSE, for men but nor for women. A negative change in exercise status was associated with lower MMSE scores for men but not for women. Individuals exercising with light intensity several times a week had the highest cognitive test and MMSE scores and the inactive group had the lowest scores. The results of the study may contribute to increased knowledge in the exercise-mental health relationship for elderly and spawn new research specifically on gender differences in this relation.
