Highly gallol-substituted, rapidly self-crosslinkable, and robust chitosan hydrogel for 3D bioprinting

Although three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting is a promising technology for reconstructing artificial tissues and organs using bioink, there is a lack of a bioink that satisfies all requirements, including printability, gelation, mechanical properties, and cytocompatibility, Herein, a novel self-crosslinkable bioink derived from chitosan (CS) and gallic acid (GA) is presented. 3D printed scaffolds with excellent shape fidelity are realized by systematically analyzing the self-crosslinking mechanism of hydrogel formation from CS-GA conjugates and by optimizing various parameters of the printing process. The CS-GA hydrogel forms rapidly in a physiological pH without any chemical crosslinking agent. In addition, the CS-GA hydrogel exhibited various physical and chemical intermolecular interactions, fast gelation rates, and excellent mechanical properties (>337 kPa). Moreover, the CS-GA hydrogel singificantly improves the cell viability (>92 %) and proliferation of the bioink. Therefore, the self-crosslinkable CS-GA bioink has great potential to overcome the limitations of conventional bioinks.

Reactivity of Lattice Oxygen in Ti-Site-Substituted SrTiO3 Perovskite Catalysts

An environmental catalyst in which a transition metal (Mn, Fe, or Co) was substituted into the Ti site of the host material, SrTiO₃, was synthesized, and the reactivity of lattice oxygen was evaluated. For CO oxidation, Mn- and Co-doped SrTiO₃ catalysts, which provided high thermal stabilities, exhibited higher activities than Pt/Al₂O₃ catalysts despite their low surface areas. Temperature-programmed reduction experiments using X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) measurements showed that the lattice oxygen of Co-doped catalyst was released at the lowest temperature. Isotopic experiments with CO and ¹⁸O₂ revealed that the lattice oxygen was involved in CO oxidation on Fe- and Co-doped catalysts; that is, CO oxidation on these catalysts proceeded via the Mars-van Krevelen mechanism. On the other hand, for Mn-doped catalyst, the contribution of lattice oxygen to CO oxidation was relatively negligible, indicating that the reaction proceeded according to the Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism. This paper clearly demonstrates that the catalytic mechanism can be adjusted by substituting transition metals into SrTiO₃.

A guide to studying protein aggregation

Disrupted protein folding or decreased protein stability can lead to the accumulation of (partially) un- or misfolded proteins, which ultimately cause the formation of protein aggregates. Much of the interest in protein aggregation is associated with its involvement in a wide range of human diseases and the challenges it poses for large-scale biopharmaceutical manufacturing and formulation of therapeutic proteins and peptides. On the other hand, protein aggregates can also be functional, as observed in nature, which triggered its use in the development of biomaterials or therapeutics as well as for the improvement of food characteristics. Thus, unmasking the various steps involved in protein aggregation is critical to obtain a better understanding of the underlying mechanism of amyloid formation. This knowledge will allow a more tailored development of diagnostic methods and treatments for amyloid-associated diseases, as well as applications in the fields of new (bio)materials, food technology and therapeutics. However, the complex and dynamic nature of the aggregation process makes the study of protein aggregation challenging. To provide guidance on how to analyse protein aggregation, in this review we summarize the most commonly investigated aspects of protein aggregation with some popular corresponding methods.

Creating hierarchical pores in metal-organic frameworks via postsynthetic reactions

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) demonstrate promise for a multitude of applications owing to their high porosity and surface area. However, the majority of conventional MOFs possess only micropores with very limited accessibility to substances larger than 2 nm-especially functional biomacromolecules like some proteins. It is challenging to create an appropriately large pore size while avoiding framework collapse in MOFs. Herein, we present the generation of mesopores in microporous MOFs through three facile and effective techniques, namely Soxhlet washing, linker hydrolysis and linker thermolysis. These postsynthetic elimination approaches have been applied in selected MOFs, including PCN-250, PCN-160 and UiO-66, and controllably generate MOFs with hierarchical pores and high stability. Our work demonstrates reproducible and straightforward methods resulting in hierarchically porous materials that possess the benefits of mesoporosity while borrowing the robustness of a micropore framework. All the procedures can be conducted reliably at a multigram scale and operation time less than 6 h, representing a significant effort in the field of MOF synthesis. These hierarchically porous MOFs show great promise in a wide range of applications as efficient adsorbents, catalysts and drug carriers.

Liquid Metal Patterning and Unique Properties for Next-Generation Soft Electronics

Room-temperature liquid metal (LM)-based electronics is expected to bring advancements in future soft electronics owing to its conductivity, conformability, stretchability, and biocompatibility. However, various difficulties arise when patterning LM because of its rheological features such as fluidity and surface tension. Numerous attempts are made to overcome these difficulties, resulting in various LM-patterning methods. An appropriate choice of patterning method based on comprehensive understanding is necessary to fully utilize the unique properties. Therefore, the authors aim to provide thorough knowledge about patterning methods and unique properties for LM-based future soft electronics. First, essential considerations for LM-patterning are investigated. Then, LM-patterning methods-serial-patterning, parallel-patterning, intermetallic bond-assisted patterning, and molding/microfluidic injection-are categorized and investigated. Finally, perspectives on LM-based soft electronics with unique properties are provided. They include outstanding features of LM such as conformability, biocompatibility, permeability, restorability, and recyclability. Also, they include perspectives on future LM-based soft electronics in various areas such as radio frequency electronics, soft robots, and heterogeneous catalyst. LM-based soft devices are expected to permeate the daily lives if patterning methods and the aforementioned features are analyzed and utilized.

Placing CF2 in the Center: Major Physicochemical Changes Upon a Minor Structural Alteration in Gem-Difunctional Compounds

Fluorine atoms play an important role in all branches of chemistry and accordingly, it is very important to study their unique and varied effects systematically, in particular, the structure-physicochemical properties relationship. The present study describes exceptional physicochemical effects resulting from a H/F exchange at the methylene bridge of gem-difunctional compounds. The Δlog P_(CF2-CH2) values, that is, the change in lipophilicity, observed for the CH₂ /CF₂ replacement in various α,α-phenoxy- and thiophenoxy-esters/amides, diketones, benzodioxoles and more, fall in the range of 0.6-1.4 units, which for most cases, is far above the values expected for such a replacement. Moreover, for compounds holding more than one such gem-difunctional moiety, the effect is nearly additive, so one can switch from a hydrophilic compound to a lipophilic one in a limited number of H/F exchanges. DFT studies of some of these systems revealed that polarity, conformational preference as well as charge distributions are strongly affected by such hydrogen to fluorine atom substitution. The pronounced effects described, are a result of the interplay between changes in polarity, H-bond basicity and molecular volume, which were obtained with a very low 'cost' in terms of molecular weight or steric effects and may have a great potential for implementation in various fields of chemical sciences.

Tissue adhesives for wound closure

Tissue adhesives have raised much attention from scientists in recent years. They have been extensively utilized in various medical fields, such as wound closure, due to the advantages of being simple, time-saving, and avoiding the problems and complications associated with surgical sutures. Besides, the tissue adhesives can absorb wound exudates and promote tissue repair. The rapid evolution in the field of tissue adhesives has resulted in the development of various adhesives with excellent mechanical properties and superior functions. However, many challenges still restrict their use in numerous clinical applications. In this paper, we present an up-to-date review of tissue adhesives for wound closure. We mainly discussed the fundamental design requirements for the adhesives, the fabrication of tissue adhesives, and the application of tissue adhesives on skin healing, corneal patch, and gastrointestinal tissues. We then highlighted the current challenges and unmet needs and delineated potential new clinical development directions for future adhesives. The progress in tissue adhesives will provide novel approaches for wound management and has the potential to supply effective treatments for a variety of medical applications.

MOFs with Open Metal(III) Sites for the Environmental Capture of Polar Volatile Organic Compounds

Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) with open metal sites (OMS) interact strongly with a range of polar gases/vapors. However, under ambient conditions, their selective adsorption is generally impaired due to a high OMS affinity to water. This led previously to the privilege selection of hydrophobic MOFs for the selective capture/detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Herein, we show that this paradigm is challenged by metal(III) polycarboxylates MOFs, bearing a high concentration of OMS, as MIL-100(Fe), enabling the selective capture of polar VOCs even in the presence of water. With experimental and computational tools, including single-component gravimetric and dynamic mixture adsorption measurements, in situ infrared (IR) spectroscopy and Density Functional Theory calculations we reveal that this adsorption mechanism involves a direct coordination of the VOC on the OMS, associated with an interaction energy that exceeds that of water. Hence, MOFs with OMS are demonstrated to be of interest for air purification purposes.

Metallic–Organic Cages (MOCs) with Heterometallic Character: Flexibility-Enhancing MOFs

The dichotomy between metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and metal–organic cages (MOCs) opens up the research spectrum of two fields which, despite having similarities, both have their advantages and disadvantages. Due to the fact that they have cavities inside, they also have applicability in the porosity sector. Bloch and coworkers within this evolution from MOFs to MOCs manage to describe a MOC with a structure of Cu2 paddlewheel Cu4L4 (L = bis(pyrazolyl)methane) with high precision thanks to crystallographic analyses of X-ray diffraction and also SEM-EDX. Then, also at the same level of concreteness, they were able to find the self-assembly of Pd(II)Cl2 moieties on the available nitrogen donor atoms leading to a [Cu4(L(PdCl2))4] structure. Here, calculations of the DFT density functional allow us to reach an unusual precision given the magnitude and structural complexity, explaining how a pyrazole ring of each bis(pyprazolyl)methane ligand must rotate from an anti to a syn conformation, and a truncation of the MOC structure allows us to elucidate, in the absence of the MOC constraint and its packing in the crystal, that the rotation is almost barrierless, as well as also explain the relative stability of the different conformations, with the anti being the most stable conformation. Characterization calculations with Mayer bond orders (MBO) and noncovalent interaction (NCI) plots discern what is important in the interaction of this type of cage with PdCl2 moieties, also CuCl2 by analogy, as well as simple molecules of water, since the complex is stable in this solvent. However, the L ligand is proved to not have the ability to stabilize an H2O molecule.

Biocatalytic cascade transformations for the synthesis of C-nucleosides and N-nucleoside analogs

Nucleosides and their analogs, including those that feature substitution of the canonical N-glycosidic by a C-glycosidic linkage, provide access to potent antiviral, antibacterial, and antitumor drugs. Furthermore, they are key building blocks of m-RNA vaccines and play a crucial role for vaccine therapeutic effectiveness. As the medicinal applications of nucleosides increase in number and importance, there is a growing need for efficiency-enhanced routes of nucleoside synthesis. Cascade biocatalysis, that is, the application of natural or evolved enzymes promoting complex transformations in multiple steps in one pot and without the need of intermediate purification, emerges as a powerful tool to obtain nucleosides from readily available starting materials. Recent efforts in enzyme discovery and protein engineering expand the toolbox of catalysts active toward nucleosides or nucleotides. In this review, we highlight recent applications, and discuss challenges, of cascade biocatalysis for nucleoside synthesis. We focus on C-nucleosides and important analogs of the canonical N-nucleosides.

Low-energy electron microscopy intensity-voltage data - Factorization, sparse sampling and classification

Low-energy electron microscopy (LEEM) taken as intensity-voltage (I-V) curves provides hyperspectral images of surfaces, which can be used to identify the surface type, but are difficult to analyse. Here, we demonstrate the use of an algorithm for factorizing the data into spectra and concentrations of characteristic components (FSC³ ) for identifying distinct physical surface phases. Importantly, FSC³ is an unsupervised and fast algorithm. As example data we use experiments on the growth of praseodymium oxide or ruthenium oxide on ruthenium single crystal substrates, both featuring a complex distribution of coexisting surface components, varying in both chemical composition and crystallographic structure. With the factorization result a sparse sampling method is demonstrated, reducing the measurement time by 1-2 orders of magnitude, relevant for dynamic surface studies. The FSC³ concentrations are providing the features for a support vector machine-based supervised classification of the surface types. Here, specific surface regions which have been identified structurally, via their diffraction pattern, as well as chemically by complementary spectro-microscopic techniques, are used as training sets. A reliable classification is demonstrated on both example LEEM I-V data sets.

Novel sensor array distinguishes heavy metal ions based on multiple fluorescence channels from dendritic mesoporous silica nanoparticles

In this work, we demonstrated a sensor array with multiple fluorescence channels using dendritic mesoporous silica nanoparticles embedded with three quantum dots for the determination of four heavy metal ions (Hg²⁺, Cu²⁺, Cr³⁺, and Ag⁺). Carboxyl-modified CdTe QDs with three different fluorescence emission wavelengths were loaded onto a dendritic mesoporous supporter by an amidation reaction. The fluorescence sensor array exhibited excellent analytical performance for discrimination and semi-quantification of heavy metal ions from a single test, which simplified detection procedures. The four heavy metal ions exhibited different degrees of quenching of the fluorescence emission intensities of the three quantum dots and resulted in a variant data matrix for linear discriminant analysis. Under optimized conditions, the fluorescence sensor array discriminated the four heavy metal ions in a concentration range of 0.05-5 μmol/L, and semi-quantified Hg²⁺, Cu²⁺, Cr³⁺, and Ag⁺ with a limit of detection of 2.51 nmol/L, 5.15 nmol/L, 3.81 nmol/L, and 5.74 nmol/L, respectively. The fluorescence sensor array integrated the sensing units into a single nanoparticle instead of the complex multiple detection steps used in traditional sensor arrays, providing an alternative strategy for constructing a single-well sensing platform. Furthermore, the fluorescence sensor array showed great practical potential for distinguishing heavy metal ions in raw water and crayfish samples.

Circularly polarized and total luminescence as probes of nucleation and growth in chiral nanocrystals

Nucleation of crystals as well as their growth is difficult to study experimentally. We have recently demonstrated that chiral Eu³⁺ -doped terbium phosphate nanocrystals are an interesting system for studying nanocrystal formation mechanisms and chiral symmetry breaking, occurring during their formation, directed by chiral ligands, such as tartaric acid. In this paper, we show how simultaneous, in situ monitoring of both total emission intensity and circularly polarized luminescence magnitude and sign versus time during nanocrystal formation provides considerable information on the mechanisms of nanocrystal nucleation and growth. Specifically, we show that the presence of tartaric acid leads to the formation of chiral prenucleation clusters, which deterministically transform into nanocrystals of a specific handedness. Additionally, we demonstrate that both unseeded and seeded nanocrystal syntheses behave differently mechanistically and that the addition of seed nanocrystals catalyses both enantio-specific (also called secondary nucleation) as well as nonspecific nucleation.

Kinematic and volumetric analysis of coupled transmembrane fluxes of binary electrolyte solution components

The paper deals with relationships between the individual transmembrane fluxes of binary electrolyte solution components and the experimentally measurable quantities describing rates of transfer processes, namely, the electric current, the transmembrane volume flow and the rates of concentration changes in the solutions adjacent to the membrane. Also, we collected and rigorously defined the kinetic coefficients describing the membrane selective and electrokinetic properties. A set of useful relationships between these coefficients is derived. An important specificity of the proposed analysis is that it does not use the Irreversible Thermodynamic approach by analyzing no thermodynamic forces that generate the fluxes under consideration. Instead, all the regularities are derived on the basis of conservation and linearity reasons. The terminology "Kinematics of Fluxes" is proposed for such an analysis on the basis of the analogy with Mechanics where Kinematics deals with regularities of motion by considering no mechanic forces. The only thermodynamic steps of the analysis relate to the discussion on the partial molar volumes of electrolyte and ions that are the equilibrium thermodynamic parameters of the adjacent solutions. These parameters are important for interrelating the transmembrane fluxes of the solution components and the transmembrane volume flow. The paper contains short literature reviews concerned with the partial molar volumes of electrolyte and ions: the methods of measurement, the obtained results and their theoretical interpretations. It is concluded from the reviews that the classical theories should be corrected to make them applicable for sufficiently concentrated solutions, 1 M or higher. The proposed correction is taken into account in the kinematic analysis.

PtOx Cly (OH)z (H2 O)n Complexes under Oxidative and Reductive Conditions: Impact of the Level of Theory on Thermodynamic Stabilities

Platinum-based catalysts with Cl^- , OH^- , O^2- and H₂ O ligands, are involved in many industrial processes. Their final chemical properties are impacted by calcination and reduction applied during the preparation and activation steps. We investigate their stability under these reactive conditions with density functional theory (DFT). We benchmark various functionals (PBE-dDsC, optPBE, B3LYP, HSE06, PBE0, TPSS, RTPSS and SCAN) against ACFDT-RPA. PBE-dDsC is well adapted, although hybrid functionals are more accurate for redox reactions. Thermodynamic phase diagrams are determined by computing the chemical potential of the species as a function of temperature and partial pressures of H₂ O, HCl, O₂ and H₂ . The stability and nature of the Pt species are highly sensitive to the activation conditions. Under O₂ , high temperatures favour PtO₂ while under H₂ , platinum is easily reduced to Pt(0). Chlorine modifies the coordination sphere of platinum during calcination by stabilizing PtCl₄ and shifts the reduction of platinum to higher temperatures under H₂ .

Tuning functionalized hexagonal boron nitride quantum dots for full visible-light fluorescence emission

Tunable photoluminescence has been observed in hexagonal boron nitride quantum dots (BNQDs), but the underlying luminescence mechanism remains elusive. In this study, we examine excited-state properties of several functionalized BNQDs models using density functional theory (DFT), time-dependent DFT, and multistate complete active space second-order perturbation theory (MS-CASPT2) methods. Unlike reported graphene quantum dots, photoluminescence of BNQDs is not affected by their sizes (<2.5 nm). Instead, the embedded single sp³ carbon atom connecting different functional groups can tune emission colors of BNQDs, whose emission wavelength cover full range of visible light and even extend toward near-infrared region. Further analysis reveals that both exciton self-trapping and electron-hole separation decrease HOMO-LUMO energy gaps, leading to large Stokes shifts. Moreover, uneven and even hybridizations induce blue- and red-shifted emission spectra. These findings provide novel insights into full-spectrum emission of BNQDs modified with functional groups.

Electronic effect of substituents on the charge-transfer dynamics at the CsPbBr3 perovskite-small molecule interface

To push the boundary of the efficiency of perovskite nanocrystal-based photovoltaics, understanding the charge transfer at the interface of these nanocrystals is necessary. In an effort to understand the electronic effects of the substituents in the charge acceptor moiety, three electronically different small molecules (namely, chloranilic acid (CA), p-benzoquinone (BQ), and duroquinone (DQ)) were chosen and their detailed charge transfer dynamics were studied at the CsPbBr₃ perovskite nanocrystal-small organic molecule interface using steady state and time-resolved spectroscopic methods. The steady-state absorption and time-resolved emission studies reveal that all three molecules interact with the NCs in the excited state. Femtosecond transient absorption experiments indicate a faster ground-state bleach recovery in the presence of the three acceptors, compared with the pristine NCs. Utilizing band alignment analysis, the faster bleach recovery of the NCs in presence of the acceptors was confirmed to be because of electron transfer from the photo-excited NCs to the acceptor molecules. Moreover, the electron transfer rates fall in the Marcus normal region and can be explained based on the electronic effects of the substituents present on the acceptor molecules.

Adjustable high-speed and directional diffusion of water nanodroplets confined by graphene sheets

Diffusion of confined water is important in nanofluidic and other water transport systems. In this study, the diffusion of water nanodroplets confined by graphene sheets is investigated based on molecular dynamics simulations. We find that the confined water nanodroplets can achieve a high-speed and directional motion. The impact of the size of water nanodroplets and distance of graphene sheets on diffusion is studied. The results show that the diffusion of confined water nanodroplets is adjustable and the speed is about 3 orders of magnitude faster than that of the self-diffusing water molecules in liquid water. Subsequently, the most suitable morphology of confined nanodroplets for rapid movement is found. We also find that the direction of diffusion of confined water nanodroplets is affected by the thermal vibrations of carbon atoms. Finally, the interaction energy and friction coefficient between confined nanodroplets and graphene sheets are analyzed to give an insight into the fast and directional diffusion behaviors of water nanodroplets. Our results reveal that a variation in the structure of interfacial water molecules with the distance of graphene sheets is the key to the rapid movement of confined water nanodroplets. The phenomena reported here can enrich the knowledge of molecular mechanisms for nanoconfined water systems, and may stimulate more ideas for the rapid removal of confined water.

Strong Coupling of Chiral Frenkel Exciton for Intense, Bisignate Circularly Polarized Luminescence

We show that chiral Frenkel excitons yield intense circularly polarized luminescence with an intrinsic dissymmetry factor in emission g_lum as high as 0.08. This outstanding value is measured through thin films of cyanine J-aggregates that form twisted bundles. Our measurements, obtained by a Mueller polarization analysis, are artifact-free and reveal a quasi-perfect correlation between the dissymmetry factors in absorption, g_abs , and in emission g_lum . We interpret the bisignate dissymmetry factors as the signature of a strong coupling between chiral Frenkel excitons longitudinally excited along the bundles. We further resolve by polarimetry analysis the split in energy between the excited states with a Davydov splitting as small as 28 meV. We finally show the anti-Kasha nature of the chiral emission bands with opposite optical chirality. These mirror-imaged emissive chiroptical features emerge from the structural rigidity of the bundles that preserves the ground- and excited-state chirality.

Water-Harvesting Metal-Organic Frameworks with Gigantic Al24 Units and their Deconstruction into Molecular Clusters

In contrast to the vast Al-oxo molecular cluster chemistry, Al-based building units for metal-organic framework (MOF) construction are limited in structural diversity and complexity. Synthesis of single crystalline MOFs based on this "hard" metal is further complicated by the poor reversibility of the Al-organic coordination linkages. Here, a strategy to employ two kinds of linkages with distinct strength-strong Al-carboxylate linkage and weak Cu-pyrazol N linkage-gives FDM-91 (FDM=Fudan Materials) with gigantic Al₂₄ -based units. After replacing the weak moieties with organic linkers post-synthetically, two new stable MOFs with exceptional water harvesting capacity (up to 0.53 g g^-1 ) and outstanding cycling performance are developed. Linkage-selective dissociation of FDM-91 further leads to the isolation of the Al₂₄ molecular clusters. The versatile chemistry performed here to reinforce or deconstruct MOFs provides a new way to make important extended and discrete structures.

Single-Shot Solid-Phase Synthesis of Full-Length H2 Relaxin Disulfide Surrogates

Chemical synthesis of insulin superfamily proteins (ISPs) has recently been widely studied to develop next-generation drugs. Separate synthesis of multiple peptide fragments and tedious chain-to-chain folding are usually encountered in these studies, limiting accessibility to ISP derivatives. Here we report the finding that insulin superfamily proteins (e.g. H2 relaxin, insulin itself, and H3 relaxin) incorporating a pre-made diaminodiacid bridge at A-B chain terminal disulfide can be easily and rapidly synthesized by a single-shot automated solid-phase synthesis and expedient one-step folding. Our new H2 relaxin analogues exhibit almost identical structures and activities when compared to their natural counterparts. This new synthetic strategy will expediate production of new ISP analogues for pharmaceutical studies.

Improve Quantum Yield of Poly(Maleic Anhydride-Alt-Vinyl Acetate) via Good Solvents

In this study, the optical properties of poly(maleic anhydride-alt-vinyl acetate) (PMV) synthesized by different polymerization methods are studied systematically. Compared to self-stabilized precipitation polymerization (pPMV), solution polymerization produces PMV solids (sPMV) with an extraordinarily high quantum yield (QY) of 20.65%. Additionally, redissolving pPMV in good solvents (rPMV) will also help to increase QY. The rising QY of sPMV and rPMV supports the idea that good solvents will reduce the rigidity of polymer chains and promote cluster formation, which is confirmed by lower glass transition temperature (T_g ) and small angle X-ray scatterer (SAXS). The study also finds that PMV exhibits application potentials in white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) and light conversion film.

Domino synthesis of 5-aminoimidazoles from Strecker multicomponent adducts via ytterbium-promoted isocyanide insertion/5-exo-dig cyclization

A new Lewis acid promoted domino isocyanide insertion/5-exo-dig cyclization of readily available Strecker 3-component adducts to 4-substituted 5-aminoimidazole derivatives is herein reported. Despite their potential as relevant heterocyclic scaffolds in medicinal chemistry programs, this class of compounds is still underrepresented, with current synthetic strategies poorly efficient in terms of timing and yields. To this end, we show how the exploitation of unconventional reactivities of isocyanides, promoted by ytterbium-triflate, could represent a key resource to enable a fast and easy access to such an unexplored area of the chemical space.

Recent Progress of Organic Semiconductor Materials in Spintronics

Spintronics, a new discipline focusing on the spin-dependent transport process of electrons, has been developing rapidly. Spin valves are the most significant carriers of spintronics utilizing the spin freedom of electrons. It is expected to pierce "Moore's Law" and become the core component in processors of the next generation. Organic semiconductors advance in their adjustable band gap, weak spin-orbit coupling and hyperfine interaction, excellent film-forming property, having enormous promise for spin valves. Here, the principle of spin valves is introduced, and the history and progress in organic spin injection and transport materials are summarized. Then we analyze the influence of spinterface on device performance and introduce reliable methods of constructing organic spin valves. Finally, the challenges for spin valves are discussed, and the future is proposed. We aim to draw the attention of researchers to organic spin valves and promote further research in spintronics through this paper.

η6 -Metalated Aryl Iodides in Diels-Alder Cycloaddition Reactions: Mode of Activation and Catalysis

The potential application of η⁶ -metalated aryl iodides as organocatalyst has been explored by means of computational methods. It is found that the enhanced halogen bonding donor ability of these species, in comparison with their demetalated counterparts, translates into a significant acceleration of the Diels-Alder cycloaddition reaction involving cyclohexadiene and methyl vinyl ketone. The factors behind this acceleration, the endo-exo selectivity of the process and the influence of the nature of the transition metal fragment in the activity of these species are quantitatively explored in detail by means of the combination of the Activation Strain Model of reaction and the Energy Decomposition Analysis methods.

Two-Dimensional Materials Applied in Membranes of Redox Flow Battery

Redox flow batteries (RFBs) are one of the most promising techniques to store and convert green and renewable energy, benefiting from their advantages of high safety, flexible design and long lifespan. Membranes with fast and selective ions transport are required for the advances of RFBs. Remarkably, two-dimensional (2D) materials with high mechanical and chemical stability, strict size exclusion and abundantly modifiable functional groups, have attracted extensive attentions in the applications of energy fields. Herein, the improvements and perspectives of 2D materials working for ionic transportation and sieving in RFBs membranes are presented. The characteristics of various materials and their advantages and disadvantages in the applications of RFBs membranes particularly are focused. This review is expected to provide a guidance for the design of membranes based on 2D materials for RFBs.

Organocatalyzed Ring-Opening Polymerization of (S)-3-Benzylmorpholine-2,5-Dione

A 3-benzylmorpholine-2,5-dione monomer is synthesized from the natural amino acid l-phenylalanine and characterized by means of nuclear magnetic resonance and infrared spectroscopy, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, and elemental analysis. Subsequent to preliminary polymerization studies, a well-defined poly(ester amide) homopolymer is synthesized via ring-opening polymerization using a binary catalyst system comprising 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) and a 1-(3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)-3-cyclohexylthiourea (TU) cocatalyst with a feed ratio of M/I/DBU/TU = 100/1/1/10. Kinetic studies reveal high controllability of the dispersities and molar masses up to conversions of almost 80%. Analysis by mass spectrometry hints toward excellent end-group fidelity at these conditions. In consequence, utilization of hydroxyl-functionalized poly(ethylene glycol) and poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) as macroinitiators results in amphiphilic block copolymers. Bulk miscibility of the building blocks is indicated by differential scanning calorimetry investigations. As more and more promising new drugs are based on hydrophobic molecules featuring aromatic moieties, the novel polyesteramides seem highly promising materials to be used as potential drug delivery vehicles.

Substituted naphthoxy-phthalonitrile derivatives: Synthesis, substituent effects, DFT, TD-DFT Calculations, antimicrobial properties and DNA interaction studies

Herein, substituted-naphthol derivatives 4a-e were synthesized in two steps, namely the Diels Alder cycloaddition and Cu-catalyzed aromatization reactions, respectively. Then, pththalonitrile derivatives 7-12 have been prepared by a nucleophilic displacement reaction of 3-nitrophthalonitrile with the naphthol derivatives 4a-e, 5 and, obtained in excellent yields. Structural characterization of the compounds was identified by different spectroscopic techniques. Antimicrobial properties of the synthesized compounds were determined by the microdilution procedure against Gram-positive, Gram-negative bacteria, and yeast. Furthermore, the DNA interaction of the compounds were determined by gel electrophoresis. One of the most prominent findings is that compounds 9 and 10 have more inhibitory effects on Gram-positive bacteria than Gram-negative bacteria. These compounds especially exhibited the highest antibacterial potency against S. aureus (625 µg/mL) among Gram-positive bacteria. According to the plasmid DNA interaction results, the synthesized compounds caused changes in the structure and mobility of the plasmid DNA. Then, geometry optimizations and frequency calculations were conducted at B3LYP/6-311 G(d,p) level of DFT, and optimized structures were used for further analyses. The NBO results revealed that the π→π * and n→π * interactions were greatly contributed to lowering the stabilization energy of all compounds (7-12). FMO energy analyses showed that compound 9 has the biggest electrodonating power.

Evaluation of Hold-Up Volume Determination Methods and Markers in Hydrophilic Interaction Liquid Chromatography

Common methods for hold-up time and volume determination in Reversed-Phase Liquid Chromatography (RPLC) have been tested for Hydrophilic Interaction Liquid Chromatography (HILIC). A zwitterionic ZIC-HILIC column has been used for the testing. The pycnometric determination method, based on differences in column weight when filled with water or organic solvent, provides the overall volume of solvent inside the column. This includes the volume of eluent semi-sorbed on the packing of the column, which acts as the main stationary phase. The homologous series approach, based on the retention behavior of homologues in relation to their molecular volume, allows the determination of accurate hold-up volumes. However, the application of this method is time-consuming. In some cases, large neutral markers with poor dipolarity/polarizability and hydrogen bonding interactions can be used as hold-up volume markers. This is the case of dodecylbenzene and nonadecane-2-one in clearly HILIC behaving chromatographic systems, the use of decanophenone as a marker can be even extended to the boundary between HILIC and RPLC. The elution volume of the marker remains nearly unaffected by the concentration of ammonium acetate in the mobile phase up to 20 mM. The injection of pure solvents to produce minor base-line disturbance as hold-up markers is strongly discouraged, since solvent peaks are complex to interpret and depend on the ionic strength of the eluent.
