Abstract
Abstract
Methionine is a naturally occurring amino acid. Its enantiomeric separation by using high performance liquid chromatography on various types of chiral stationary phases was studied. The effect of mobile phase composition on enantioselectivity and retention was considered. The separation of the enantiomers was attained in different separation modes – reversed phase mode for the macrocyclic antibiotic chiral stationary phases (teicoplanin, teicoplanin aglycone), normal phase and polar organic phase modes for the isopropyl carbamate cyclofructan 6 chiral stationary phase. It was shown that the hydrogen bonding, dipole interactions, steric effects between methionine molecules and stationary phases play an important role in the separation of enantiomers.

Abstract
The enantiomers of twelve unusual β2- and β3-homoamino acids containing the same side-chains were separated on chiral stationary phases containing a quinine- or quinidine-based zwitterionic ion-exchanger as chiral selector. The effects of the mobile phase composition, the nature and concentration of the acid and base additives and temperature on the separations were investigated. The changes in standard enthalpy, ∆(∆H°), entropy, ∆(∆S°), and free energy, ∆(∆G°), were calculated from the linear van’t Hoff plots derived from the ln α vs.1/T curves in the studied temperature range (10–50 °C). The values of the thermodynamic parameters depended on the nature of the selectors, the structures of the analytes, and the positions of the substituents on the analytes. A comparison of the zwitterionic stationary phases revealed that the quinidine-based ZWIX(−)™ column exhibited much better selectivity for both β2- and β3-amino acids than the quinine-based ZWIX(+)™ column, and the separation performances of both the ZWIX(+)™ and ZWIX(−)™ columns were better for β2-amino acids. The elution sequence was determined in some cases and was observed to be R <S and S < R on the ZWIX(+)™ and ZWIX(−)™ columns, respectively.

Abstract
High-performance liquid chromatography on a glycopeptide antibiotic teicoplanin-based chiral stationary phase coupled with tandem mass spectrometry was developed for fast and reliable enantioseparation and determination of protein amino acids in hydrolyzed fertilizer samples. The effect of the mobile phase parameters (type and content of organic modifier and pH) and the column temperature on the enantioselectivity was investigated. Under optimized conditions, the majority (15 of 19) of d/l-amino acid pairs were resolved with a resolution factor (Rs) higher than 1.5 with a run time of 15 min. A triple quadrupole tandem mass spectrometer operating in multiple reaction monitoring mode with an electrospray ionization (ESI) ion source was employed for detection. The method was validated in terms of linearity, limits of detection, limits of quantitation, precision, and accuracy. Linear responses were obtained with determination coefficients higher than 0.998 for all analytes, and limits of detection were from 0.04 to 0.24 μg/mL. Sample spike/recovery experiments gave recovery values ranging from 73% for d-threonine to 116% for L-tryptophan. Relative standard deviations for inter- and intraday precision experiments were lower than 21.7%. The developed method was successfully applied for determination of the free amino acid enantiomers in five commercially available hydrolyzed protein fertilizer samples.

Abstract
Two capillary electrophoresis-tandem mass spectrometry (CE-MS(2)) methods were optimized in this work using cyclodextrins (CDs) as chiral selectors in order to determine the degree of racemization of the free amino acids contained in different hydrolyzed protein fertilizers used as plant biostimulants. The methodologies developed were characterized by the specificity of MS(2) experiments enabling the identification of all protein amino acids, except for cysteine. The enantiomeric separation of up to 14 amino acids was achieved with resolutions above 1.0 and limits of detection between 0.02 and 0.8 μM. The methods were applied to the analysis of complex samples such as hydrolyzed protein fertilizers to evaluate the presence of d-amino acids after different kinds of hydrolysis treatments. The results corroborated the absence or almost negligible presence of enantiomeric conversions of the L-amino acids into D-amino acids in the case of fertilizers obtained by enzymatic hydrolysis, as well as the high racemization rate for those obtained through a chemical hydrolysis.

Abstract
Chiral recognition phenomena play an important role in nature as well as analytical separation sciences. In separation sciences such as chromatography and capillary electrophoresis, enantiospecific interactions between the enantiomers of an analyte and the chiral selector are required in order to observe enantioseparations. Due to the large structural variety of chiral selectors applied, different mechanisms and structural features contribute to the chiral recognition process. This chapter briefly illustrates the current models of the enantiospecific recognition on the structural basics of various chiral selectors.

Abstract
Since their introduction by Armstrong in 1994, macrocyclic antibiotic-based chiral stationary phases have proven their applicability for the chiral resolution of various types of racemates. The unique structure of macrocyclic glycopeptides and their large variety of interactive sites (e.g., hydrophobic pockets, hydroxyl, amino and carboxyl groups, halogen atoms, aromatic moieties, etc.) are the reason for their wide-ranging selectivity. The commercially available Chirobiotic™ phases, which display complementary characteristics, are capable of separating a broad variety of enantiomeric compounds with good efficiency, good column loadability, high reproducibility, and long-term stability. These are the major reasons for the use of macrocyclic antibiotic-based stationary phases in HPLC enantioseparations. This overview chapter provides a brief summary of general aspects of macrocyclic antibiotic-based chiral stationary phases including their preparation and their application to direct enantioseparations of various racemates focusing on the literature published since 2004.

Abstract
Using capillary electrophoresis (CE) three chiral primary amine compounds 1-aminoindan (AI), 1-(1-naphthyl)ethylamine (NEA) and 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-1-naphthylamine (THAN), exhibited only partial or no separation when β-cyclodextrin (βCD) was used as chiral selector. The use of 18-crown-6 (18C6) as a second additive with βCD resulted in an enhanced separation. A molecular modeling study, using molecular mechanics and the semiempirical PM6 calculations, was used to help explaining the mechanism of the enantiodifferentiation and to predict the separation process. Optimization of the structures of the complexes by the PM6 method indicate that the poor separation obtained in the presence of the βCD chiral selector alone is due to the small binding energy differences (ΔΔE) of 4.7, 1.1 and 1.2 kcal mol(-1) for AI, NEA and THAN, respectively. In the presence of 18C6 it was suggested that a sandwich compound between 18C6, amine and βCD is formed. Theoretical calculations show that a significant increase in the binding energy is obtained for the sandwich compounds indicating strong hydrophobic and van der Waals interactions that show enhanced enantiodifferentiation.

Abstract
In this work a chiral stationary phase was prepared by dynamically coating a monolithic reversed-phase HPLC column with a vancomycin-derivative as chiral selector. A hydrophobic alkyl-chain was attached to the vancomycin molecule, providing the immobilization of the chiral selector on the reversed-phase material. Dansyl amino acids were chosen as model analytes for testing the separation power of the dynamically coated phase. All investigated compounds were separated into their enantiomers. Compared with a conventionally packed vancomycin-CSP, a reversal of the enantiomer elution order was obtained.
