Animals routinely encounter environmental stressors and may employ phenotypic plasticity to compensate for the costs of these perturbations. Parasites represent an ecologically important stressor for animals, which may induce host plasticity. The present study examined the effects of a trematode parasite, Schistosomatium douthitti, on deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus) physiology, behavior and energetics. Measures were taken to assess direct parasite pathology as well as potential host plasticity used to reduce the costs of these pathologies. Parasitized mice had increased liver and spleen masses, as well as decreased liver protein synthesis. Parasitism also led to increased gastrointestinal (GI) mass, either directly due to parasite presence or as host compensation for decreased GI function. No additional plasticity was recorded - infected animals did not consume more food, decrease in body mass or reduce their activity. Parasitism led to reduced thermoregulation during short-term cold exposure, indicating that there may be fitness costs of parasitism. There were no changes in the other measures of energetics taken here, namely basal metabolic rate (BMR) and cold-induced maximal metabolic rate (MRmax). Together, the results suggest that many costs of parasite infection are largely ameliorated through physiological or morphological compensatory mechanisms.

Is BMR repeatable in deer mice? Organ mass correlates and the effects of cold acclimation and natal altitude

Basal metabolic rate (BMR) is probably the most studied aspect of energy metabolism in vertebrate endotherms. Numerous papers have explored its mass allometry, phylogenetic and ecological relationships, and ontogeny. Implicit in many of these studies (and explicit in some) is the view that BMR responds to selection, which requires repeatability and heritability. However, BMR is highly plastic in response to numerous behavioral and environmental factors and there are surprisingly few data on its repeatability. Moreover, the mechanistic underpinnings of variation in BMR are unclear, despite considerable research. We studied BMR repeatability in deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) across intervals of 30-60 days, and also examined the influence of birth altitude (3,800 m versus 340 m) and temperature acclimation (to approximately 5 or approximately 20 degrees C) on BMR, and the relationship between BMR and organ size. Neither acclimation temperature nor natal altitude alone influenced BMR, but the combination of birth at high altitude and cold acclimation significantly increased BMR. Few visceral organ masses were correlated to BMR and most were inconsistent across natal altitudes and acclimation temperatures, indicating that no single organ 'controls' variation in BMR. In several treatment groups, the mass of the 'running motor' (combined musculoskeletal mass) was negatively correlated to BMR and the summed mass of visceral organs was positively correlated to BMR. We found no repeatability of BMR in any treatment group. That finding-in sharp contrast to high repeatability of BMR in several other small endotherms-suggests little potential for direct selection to drive BMR evolution in deer mice.

Allometry, Antilog Transformations, and the Perils of Prediction on the Original Scale

Biologists often use allometric equations that take the form of power functions (e.g., Y = aM(b), where M stands for mass and a and b are empirically fitted constants). Typically, these allometric equations are fitted by taking the antilog of log-log regressions. Predictions from these allometric equations are biased, and the bias my be appreciable. Methods for making predictions that correct for the bias are available, but they have rarely, if ever, been used by ecological and evolutionary physiologists. Just as physiologists would not use an instrument that was not properly calibrated, they should not use allometric equations to make predictions unless they account for the bias of those predictions. We analyzed 20 interspecific and 10 intraspecific data sets. We compared predictions from standard allometric equations with those from several alternative methods. Our analyses suggest that the bias of predictions from interspecific data sets may be substantial. For the intraspecific data sets we analyzed, the bias was likely to be small. Biologists, including ecological and evolutionary physiologists, should exercise care when using allometric equations to make predictions, particularly given that methods to adjust for bias are easily implemented.

Basal metabolic rate, food intake, and body mass in cold- and warm-acclimated Garden Warblers

We address the question of whether physiological flexibility in relation to climate is a general feature of the metabolic properties of birds. We tested this hypothesis in hand-raised Garden Warblers (Sylvia borin), long-distance migrants, which normally do not experience great temperature differences between summer and winter. We maintained two groups of birds under cold and warm conditions for 5 months, during which their body mass and food intake were monitored. When relatedness (siblings vs. non-siblings) of the experimental birds was taken into account, body mass in cold-acclimated birds was higher than in warm-acclimated birds. BMR, measured at the end of the 5-month temperature treatment, was also higher in the cold- than the warm-acclimated group. Migrant birds thus seem to be capable of the same metabolic cold-acclimation response as has been reported in resident birds. The data support the hypothesis that physiological flexibility is a basic trait of the metabolic properties of birds.

Voluntary running in deer mice: speed, distance, energy costs and temperature effects

The energetics of terrestrial locomotion are of considerable interest to ecologists and physiologists, but nearly all of our current knowledge comes from animals undergoing forced exercise. To explore patterns of energy use and behavior during voluntary exercise, we developed methods allowing nearly continuous measurements of metabolic rates in freely behaving small mammals,with high temporal resolution over periods of several days. We used this approach to examine relationships between ambient temperature(Ta), locomotor behavior and energy costs in the deer mouse, a small mammal that routinely encounters a large range of temperatures in its natural habitat. We tested for individual consistency in running behavior and metabolic traits, and determined how locomotor costs vary with speed and Ta. Because of the importance of thermoregulatory costs in small mammals, we checked for substitution of exercise heat for thermostatic heat production at Ta below the thermal neutral zone and determined the fraction of the daily energy budget comprising exercise costs.

Locomotor behavior was highly variable among individuals but had high repeatability, at least over short intervals. We found few temperature-related changes in speed or distance run, but Ta strongly affected energy costs. Partial substitution of exercise heat for thermogenic heat occurred at low Ta. This reduced energy expenditure during low-temperature running by 23–37%, but running costs comprised a fairly minor fraction of the energy budget, so the daily energy savings viasubstitution were much smaller. Deer mice did not adjust running speed to maximize metabolic economy, as they seldom used the high speeds that provide the lowest cost of transport. The highest voluntary speeds (4–5 km h-1) were almost always below the predicted maximal aerobic speed,and were much less than the species' maximal sprint speed. Maximum voluntarily attained rates of oxygen consumption(V̇O2) were highest at low Ta, but rarely approached maximal V̇O2 during forced treadmill exercise. Mean respiratory exchange ratios coincident with maximal voluntary V̇O2increased slightly as Ta declined, but were always below 1.0 (another indication that metabolic rate was less than the aerobic maximum). Individuals with high running performance (cumulative distance and running time) had high resting metabolism, which suggests a cost of having high capacity or propensity for activity.

CLIMATIC ADAPTATION AND THE EVOLUTION OF BASAL AND MAXIMUM RATES OF METABOLISM IN RODENTS

Metabolic rate is a key aspect of organismal biology and the identification of selective factors that have led to species differences is a major goal of evolutionary physiology. We tested whether environmental characteristics and/or diet were significant predictors of interspecific variation in rodent metabolic rates. Mass-specific basal metabolic rates (BMR) and maximum metabolic rates (MMR, measured during cold exposure in a He-O2 atmosphere) were compiled from the literature. Maximum (Tmax) and minimum (Tmin) annual mean temperatures, latitude, altitude, and precipitation were obtained from field stations close to the capture sites reported for each population (N = 57). Diet and all continuous-valued traits showed statistically significant phylogenetic signal, with the exception of mass-corrected MMR and altitude. Therefore, results of phylogenetic analyses are emphasized. Body mass was not correlated with absolute latitude, but was positively correlated with precipitation in analyses with phylogenetically independent contrasts. Conventional multiple regressions that included body mass indicated that Tmax (best), Tmin, latitude, and diet were significant additional predictors of BMR. However, phylogenetic analyses indicated that latitude was the only significant predictor of mass-adjusted BMR (positive partial regression coefficient, one-tailed P = 0.0465). Conventional analyses indicated that Tmax, Tmin (best), and altitude explained significant amounts of the variation in mass-adjusted MMR. With body mass and Tmin in the model, no additional variables were significant predictors. Phylogenetic contrasts yielded similar results. Both conventional and phylogenetic analyses indicated a highly significant positive correlation between residual BMR and MMR (as has also been reported for birds), which is consistent with a key assumption of the aerobic capacity model for the evolution of vertebrate energetics (assuming that MMR and exercise-induced maximal oxygen consumption are positively functionally related). Our results support the hypothesis that variation in environmental factors leads to variation in the selective regime for metabolic rates of rodents. However, the causes of a positive association between BMR and latitude remain obscure. Moreover, an important area for future research will be experiments in all taxa are raised under common conditions to allow definitive tests of climatic adaptation in endotherm metabolic rates and to elucidate the extent of adaptive phenotypic plasticity.

Individual variation and repeatability of basal metabolism in the bank vole, Clethrionomys glareolus

Basal metabolic rate (BMR) is a fundamental energetic trait and has been measured in hundreds of birds and mammals. Nevertheless, little is known about the consistency of the population-average BMR or its repeatability at the level of individual variation. Here, we report that average mass-independent BMR did not differ between two generations of bank voles or between two trials separated by one month. Individual differences in BMR were highly repeatable across the one month interval: the coefficient of intraclass correlation was 0.70 for absolute log-transformed values and 0.56 for mass-independent values. Thus, BMR can be a meaningful measure of an individual physiological characteristic and can be used to test hypotheses concerning relationships between BMR and other traits. On the other hand, mass-independent BMR did not differ significantly across families, and the coefficient of intraclass correlation for full sibs did not differ from zero, which suggests that heritability of BMR in voles is not high.

Body size as a latent variable in a structural equation model: thermal acclimation and energetics of the leaf-eared mouse

Body size is one of the most important determinants of energy metabolism in mammals. However, the usual physiological variables measured to characterize energy metabolism and heat dissipation in endotherms are strongly affected by thermal acclimation, and are also correlated among themselves. In addition to choosing the appropriate measurement of body size, these problems create additional complications when analyzing the relationships among physiological variables such as basal metabolism, non-shivering thermogenesis, thermoregulatory maximum metabolic rate and minimum thermal conductance, body size dependence, and the effect of thermal acclimation on them. We measured these variables in Phyllotis darwini, a murid rodent from central Chile, under conditions of warm and cold acclimation. In addition to standard statistical analyses to determine the effect of thermal acclimation on each variable and the body-mass-controlled correlation among them, we performed a Structural Equation Modeling analysis to evaluate the effects of three different measurements of body size (body mass, m(b); body length, L(b) and foot length, L(f)) on energy metabolism and thermal conductance. We found that thermal acclimation changed the correlation among physiological variables. Only cold-acclimated animals supported our a priori path models, and m(b) appeared to be the best descriptor of body size (compared with L(b) and L(f)) when dealing with energy metabolism and thermal conductance. However, while m(b) appeared to be the strongest determinant of energy metabolism, there was an important and significant contribution of L(b) (but not L(f)) to thermal conductance. This study demonstrates how additional information can be drawn from physiological ecology and general organismal studies by applying Structural Equation Modeling when multiple variables are measured in the same individuals.

Age and aerobic performance in deer mice

Age impacts the phenotype of all multicellular animals, but lifetime changes in physiological traits are poorly understood for all but a few species. Here, we describe a cross-sectional study of age effects on body composition, aerobic performance and ventilation in deer mice Peromyscus maniculatus. This species lives considerably longer in captivity (in excess of 5 years) than most laboratory rodents, and the adaptational biology of its aerobic physiology is well studied. Our deer mice grew throughout life, and, as is typical for mammals, their basal metabolic rate (BMR) and maximal oxygen consumption in exercise ((VO(2)max)) and thermogenesis ((VO(2)sum)) increased as power functions of mass. Age did not affect BMR, but we found abrupt decreases in growth rate, (VO(2)max) and (VO(2)sum) at approximately 485 days of age, and the mass-adjusted maximal aerobic performance of old mice (5 years of age) was 20% ((VO(2)max)) to 35% ((VO(2)sum)) less than that of young animals. Breathing frequency (f) and oxygen extraction (E(O(2))) also declined with age but did not change abruptly. However, there were no consistent age-related changes in tidal volume (V(T)) or minute volume ((Vmin)) after accounting for the effects of mass and (VO(2)sum). Age influenced several aspects of body composition (lean and fat mass). However, these changes were insufficient to explain the age-related declines in aerobic performance, suggesting that mass-specific oxidative capacity of lean tissue decreased with age. The performance changes we found could engender substantial reductions in the mobility and thermal tolerances of old deer mice. However, very few wild mice are likely to survive to ages where substantial performance decreases occur, so these declines are probably not subjected to strong selection in natural populations.

Thermogenic changes with chronic cold exposure in the naked mole-rat (Heterocephalus glaber)

The naked mole-rat (Heterocephalus glaber) lives communally in a thermally buffered underground habitat. Here, it relies primarily on ectothermic (behavioral) mechanisms to maintain body temperature (T(b)). Outside this milieu, it is unable to effectively regulate T(b) and T(b) tracks that of ambient temperature (T(a)). Although naked mole-rats, in their natural habitat have little need for cold-tolerance, we questioned whether or not thermogenic capacity would change with prolonged (>1 year) exposure to cooler conditions. We hypothesized that these rodents would not conform to common mammalian patterns and that non-shivering thermogenic (NST) capacity would be unchanged with chronic cold exposure. The capacity for NST was assessed following noradrenaline administration (0.8 mg/kg, s.c.) to lightly anesthetized (pentobarbital 6% m/v 40 mg/kg) animals and monitoring the concomitant changes in oxygen consumption and T(b). Results concur with the null hypothesis in that prolonged cold exposure did not elicit any increase in NST capacity (1.52+/-0.17 ml O(2)/g/h, cold-acclimated; 1.73+/-0.31 ml O(2)/g/h, control; P>0.05). Rapid heat loss across their uninsulated integument may necessitate continuous maximal stimulation of brown adipose tissue (BAT), and as such, prevent any further increase in thermogenic capacity following cold exposure.

Individual variation in metabolic traits of wild nine-banded armadillos(Dasypus novemcinctus), and the aerobic capacity model for the evolution of endothermy

A fundamental assumption of the aerobic capacity model for the evolution of endothermy is that basal (BMR) and peak (PMR) metabolic rates are functionally linked at the intraspecific level. The purpose of this study was to use the nine-banded armadillo Dasypus novemcinctus as a model to test this assumption. Measurements of BMR, PMR, mass and rectal temperature were obtained over two summers from wild, adult individuals from a population in Louisiana, USA. BMR and PMR were positively correlated (r=0.62), and both were significantly higher (by 46% for BMR and by 35% for PMR) in 1999 than in 1998. Similar results were obtained whether metabolic rates were expressed in whole-animal or mass-independent units. These results suggest the existence of a functional link between BMR and PMR and are therefore consistent with the aerobic capacity model. In addition, this study confirmed that, compared with most eutherian mammals, the nine-banded armadillo exhibits low and highly variable basal and peak metabolic rates (20-60% the predicted values; 23% and 27% coefficients of variation) and rectal temperatures (range 32.7-35.3°C). Such metabolic traits are, however, consistent with the general pattern previously observed for other members of the order Xenarthra and with the hypothesis that low metabolic rates in armored mammals evolved as a result of unbalanced selection in which, because of low predation risks,selection for a high aerobic capacity was much weaker than the opposing selection for energy conservation.

Intensity-controlled treadmill running in mice: cardiac and skeletal muscle hypertrophy

Whereas novel pathways of pathological heart enlargement have been unveiled by thoracic aorta constriction in genetically modified mice, the molecular mechanisms of adaptive cardiac hypertrophy remain virtually unexplored and call for an effective and well-characterized model of physiological mechanical loading. Experimental procedures of maximal oxygen consumption (VO(2 max)) and intensity-controlled treadmill running were established in 40 female and 36 male C57BL/6J mice. An inclination-dependent VO(2 max) with 0.98 test-retest correlation was found at 25 degrees treadmill grade. Running for 2 h/day, 5 days/wk, in intervals of 8 min at 85-90% of VO(2 max) and 2 min at 50% (adjusted to weekly VO(2 max) testing) increased VO(2 max) to a plateau 49% above sedentary females and 29% in males. Running economy improved in both sexes, and echocardiography indicated significantly increased left ventricle posterior wall thickness. Ventricular weights increased by 19-29 and 12-17% in females and males, respectively, whereas cardiomyocyte dimensions increased by 20-32, and 17-23% in females and males, respectively; skeletal muscle mass increased by 12-18%. Thus the model mimics human responses to exercise and can be used in future studies of molecular mechanisms underlying these adaptations.

Limits to sustained energy intake

We have previously observed that female MF1 mice appeared to reach a limit in their food intake and milk production during late lactation, reaching a plateau between days 13 and 16 of lactation and between litter sizes of 9 and 15. These mice did not increase their food intake when forced to raise more offspring or when manipulated to be concurrently pregnant during late lactation, yet they did eat significantly more food at the peak of their second sequential lactation or when challenged with food of reduced energy content. These data suggest that apparent limits on sustained energy intake in this strain may not reflect central limitations but rather peripheral constraints at the mammary glands. In this study, we aimed to determine whether these were indeed limits by increasing the demands on the females during late lactation by cold-exposure (8°C). Females responded to this manipulation by significantly increasing their food intake (F1,73=77.53, P<0.001) above that of lactating females kept in warmer conditions (21°C). In addition, there was a significant reduction in the number of pups raised in the cold (t=2.36, d.f.=18, P=0.03), with the majority of the mortality occurring within the first 2 days of cold-exposure. The mean mass of the pups raised in the cold was significantly lower (F1,74=13.8, P<0.001) than that of those raised in the warm. Despite the cold-exposure and the increased food intake, there was no difference in the resting metabolic rates of the two groups of mothers or in the lengths of their small intestine. The greater food intake of lactating mice during cold-exposure supported our previous observations that they were capable of eating more food than the previously suggested limit of 23.1gday−1. However, the milk energy output of females in the cold was also significantly higher than in the warm (F1,15=11.99, P=0.003), indicating that the asymptotic food intake of females in the warm was not mediated by limitations in their milk production. Sustained energy intake in these mice does not appear to be centrally or peripherally limited. Rather, the mice may restrain their use of energy during their first lactation because of life-history consequences for future reproductive attempts.

When nonshivering thermogenesis equals maximum metabolic rate: thermal acclimation and phenotypic plasticity of fossorial Spalacopus cyanus (Rodentia)

Many small mammals inhabiting fluctuating and cold environments display enhanced capacity for seasonal changes in nonshivering thermogenesis (NST) and thermoregulatory maximum metabolic rate (MMR). However, it is not known how this plasticity remains in a mammal that rarely experiences extreme thermal fluctuations. In order to answer this question, we determined body mass (m(b)), basal metabolic rate (BMR), NST, MMR, and minimum thermal conductance (C) on a Chilean fossorial caviomorph (Spalacopus cyanus) from a coastal population, acclimated to cold (15 degrees C) and warm (30 degrees C) conditions. NST was measured as the maximum response of metabolic rate (NST(max)) after injection of norepinephrine (NE) in thermoneutrality minus BMR. Maximum metabolic rate was assessed in animals exposed to enhanced heat-loss atmosphere (He-O2) connected with an open-flow respirometer. Body mass and metabolic variables increased significantly after cold acclimation with respect to warm acclimation but to a low extent (BMR, 26%; NST, 10%; and MMR, 12%). However, aerobic scope (MMR/BMR), calculated shivering thermogenesis (ST), and C did not change with acclimation regime. Our data suggest that physiological plasticity of S. cyanus is relatively low, which is in accordance with a fossorial mode of life. Although little is known about MMR and NST in fossorial mammals, S. cyanus has remarkably high NST; low MMR; and surprisingly, a nil capacity of ST when compared with other rodents.

Does thermal history affect metabolic plasticity?: a study in three Phyllotis species along an altitudinal gradient

(1) The aim of this study was to understand the effects of thermal history in metabolic features such as maximum (MMR) and basal (BMR) metabolic rates, as well as in metabolic plasticity, considered as the total variation of MMR and BMR during the acclimation period. (2) We studied three species of the genus Phyllotis, from different thermal environments, in an altitudinal gradient from sea level to 3800m.a.s.l. Animals were acclimated to contrasting temperatures of 5 and 30 degrees C. To determine the metabolic flexibility, MMR was measured at intervals of 6 days during the acclimation period, while BMR values were obtained at the end of acclimations. Aerobic scope and the rates of change of MMR were estimated in all populations. (3) High- and low-altitude rodents did not show differences in BMR. However, both upper and lower limits of MMR, as well as aerobic scope, were significantly different between high- and low-altitude species, indicating similar ranges of metabolic plasticity. On the other hand, the rates of change of MMR were similar in all populations. (4) Our results indicate that thermal history has a profound effect on the individuals' thermogenic capacity, probably in both phylogenetic and ontogenetic levels. Low-altitude species could not increase MMR to the same levels as high-altitude species, while the later were unable to decrease MMR to achieve the values of the low-altitude species.

Morphological and physiological responses to altitude in deer mice Peromyscus maniculatus

Individuals within a species, living across a wide range of habitats, often display a great deal of phenotypic plasticity for organ mass and function. We investigated the extent to which changes in organ mass are variable, corresponding to environmental demand, across an altitudinal gradient. Are there changes in the mass of oxygen delivery organs (heart and lungs) and other central processing organs (gut, liver, kidney) associated with an increased sustainable metabolic rate that results from decreased ambient temperatures and decreased oxygen availability along an altitudinal gradient? We measured food intake, resting metabolic rate (RMR), and organ mass in captive deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus bairdii) at three sites from 1,200 to 3,800 m above sea level to determine whether energy demand was correlated with organ mass. We found that food intake, gut mass, and cardiopulmonary organ mass increased in mice living at high altitudes. RMR was not correlated with organ mass differences along the altitudinal gradient. While the conditions in this study were by no means extreme, these results show that mice living at high altitudes have higher levels of energy demand and possess larger cardiopulmonary and digestive organs than mice living at lower altitudes.

Maximal sustained energy budgets in humans and animals

Why are sustained energy budgets of humans and other vertebrates limited to not more than about seven times resting metabolic rate? The answer to this question has potential applications to growth rates, foraging ecology, biogeography, plant metabolism, burn patients and sports medicine.

The effects of high altitude on hypothalamic-pituitary secretory dynamics in men

OBJECTIVE

Individuals adapted to high altitude (HA) have abnormalities in endocrine function and specifically in the pituitary-thyroid axis and aldosterone regulation. In this study we assessed hypothalamic-pituitary function in men adapted to high altitude living using exogenous administration of synthetic hypothalamic hormones.

DESIGN

Growth hormone releasing hormone (Geref 1-29) 1 microgram/kg, TRH 500 micrograms, GHRH 100 micrograms and ovine corticotrophin releasing hormone (oCRH) 1 microgram/kg were simultaneously administered intravenously to two groups of men: 12 born and raised in the city of Pasto, Colombia, South America, located at an altitude of 2600 m in the southern Colombian Andes (HA group) and 10 men living at sea level (SL) in Tampa, Florida.

MEASUREMENTS

The following hormones were measured: GH, IGF-I, TSH, T4, free T4, free T3, PRL, ACTH, beta-endorphin and cortisol. IGF binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3) and cortisol binding globulin (CBG) were also measured.

RESULTS

GH response to GHRH in HA men was exaggerated compared to SL men, and IGF-I concentration was also significantly increased in the presence of normal levels of IGFBP-3. No differences in TSH or PRL responses were found following TRH. HA men had lower basal total T4 levels, but higher free T4 and free T3 concentrations. The basal ACTH concentrations in the HA men were significantly lower than SL, although the response to oCRH was still present. beta-Endorphin basal levels were similar at HA and SL but the response to oCRH at HA was blunted. At HA, basal cortisol levels as well as CBG were elevated compared to SL and, in contrast to SL, did not increase significantly after endogenous ACTH secretion.

CONCLUSIONS

This study is the first description of exaggerated GH response to the administration of GHRH in HA men and also of a significant increase in IGF-I concentration in the same subjects in the presence of normal levels of IGFBP-3. An altered hypothalamic-pituitary response was found in HA men after administration of oCRH characterized by a significantly lower basal ACTH concentration at HA, although the response to oCRH was present but the beta-endorphin response to oCRH was blunted. At HA, basal cortisol levels, as well as CBG, were elevated and the cortisol levels did not significantly increase after endogenous ACTH secretion. We have characterized the differences in hypothalamic-pituitary dynamics after the administration of TRH, GnRH and oCRH in HA men comparing their response to age/sex matched SL men.

Resting and field metabolic rates of adult male yellow-bellied marmots, Marmota flaviventris

Resting metabolic rate (RMR) and field metabolic rate (FMR) of wild-caught males were estimated from oxygen consumption and the doubly-labeled water method, respectively. The average FMR:RMR ratio of 6.9 was much greater than ratios reported for other mammals. Total FMR (kJ/day) increased and specific RMR (kJ/kg/day) decreased with time. Neither total RMR nor specific FMR were significantly related to time. The decrease in specific RMR may result from a circannual decrease in maintenance expenditure and a seasonal increase in body mass. Total FMR may increase through the season as conditions for male activity become more favorable.

Ventilatory accommodation of changing oxygen demand in sciurid rodents

Ventilation was measured across a range of O2 consumption rates in four sciurid rodents: Tamias minimus (47 g), Spermophilus lateralis (189 g), S. beecheyi (531 g), and Marmota flaviventris juveniles (1054 g) and adults (2989 g). Maximum thermogenic oxygen consumption was measured for all but adult M. flaviventris. Aerobic scopes (maximum/minimum O2 consumption rates) were 4.6, 3.8, 5.4, and 4.8 in T. minimus, S. lateralis, S. beecheyi, and juvenile M. flaviventris, respectively. Aerobic scope was at least 4.1 in adult M. flaviventris. Ventilatory accommodation of changing O2 consumption rate was qualitatively similar in the four species, with the bulk of accommodation resulting from changes in minute volume. Nevertheless, there were significant differences in the relative importance of frequency, tidal volume, and O2 extraction in accommodation. In all species, frequency and minute volume were strongly correlated to O2 consumption rate. Tidal volume was significantly correlated to O2 consumption rate in T. minimus and S. beecheyi, but not in the other species. Oxygen extraction was not significantly correlated to O2 consumption rate in any species. Analysis of factorial ventilation changes across a standardized 3.8-fold change in O2 consumption rate revealed significant differences among species in frequency and O2 extraction, but not in tidal or minute volume. When compared to a generalized allometry for mammalian resting ventilation, the four sciurid species had consistently lower respiration frequency and higher O2 extraction than predicted, perhaps because the sciurid measurements were made on unrestrained animals. There was no indication that ventilation constrained maximum O2 consumption rate.
