Titanium dioxide nanoparticles potentially regulate the mechanism(s) for photosynthetic attributes, genotoxicity, antioxidants defense machinery, and phytochelatins synthesis in relation to hexavalent chromium toxicity in Helianthus annuus L

Microbes-assisted phytoremediation of lead and petroleum hydrocarbons contaminated water by water hyacinth

An experiment was carried out to explore the impact of petroleum hydrocarbons (PHs)-degrading microbial consortium (MC) on phytoremediation ability and growth of water hyacinth (WH) plants in water contaminated with lead (Pb) and PHs. Buckets (12-L capacity) were filled with water and WH plants, PHs (2,400 mg L-1) and Pb (10 mg L-1) in respective buckets. Plants were harvested after 30 days of transplanting and results showed that PHs and Pb substantially reduced the agronomic (up to 62%) and physiological (up to 49%) attributes of WH plants. However, the application of MC resulted in a substantial increase in growth (38%) and physiology (22%) of WH plants over uninoculated contaminated control. The WH + MC were able to accumulate 93% Pb and degrade/accumulate 72% of PHs as compared to initial concentration. Furthermore, combined use of WH plants and MC in co-contamination of PHs and Pb, reduced Pb and PHs contents in water by 74% and 68%, respectively, than that of initially applied concentration. Our findings suggest that the WH in combination with PHs-degrading MC could be a suitable nature-based water remediation technology for organic and inorganic contaminants and in future it can be used for decontamination of mix pollutants from water bodies.

Advances in the Involvement of Metals and Metalloids in Plant Defense Response to External Stress

Plants, as sessile organisms, uptake nutrients from the soil. Throughout their whole life cycle, they confront various external biotic and abiotic threats, encompassing harmful element toxicity, pathogen infection, and herbivore attack, posing risks to plant growth and production. Plants have evolved multifaceted mechanisms to cope with exogenous stress. The element defense hypothesis (EDH) theory elucidates that plants employ elements within their tissues to withstand various natural enemies. Notably, essential and non-essential trace metals and metalloids have been identified as active participants in plant defense mechanisms, especially in nanoparticle form. In this review, we compiled and synthetized recent advancements and robust evidence regarding the involvement of trace metals and metalloids in plant element defense against external stresses that include biotic stressors (such as drought, salinity, and heavy metal toxicity) and abiotic environmental stressors (such as pathogen invasion and herbivore attack). We discuss the mechanisms underlying the metals and metalloids involved in plant defense enhancement from physiological, biochemical, and molecular perspectives. By consolidating this information, this review enhances our understanding of how metals and metalloids contribute to plant element defense. Drawing on the current advances in plant elemental defense, we propose an application prospect of metals and metalloids in agricultural products to solve current issues, including soil pollution and production, for the sustainable development of agriculture. Although the studies focused on plant elemental defense have advanced, the precise mechanism under the plant defense response still needs further investigation.

Microbial agents obtained from tomato straw composting effectively promote tomato straw compost maturation and improve compost quality

Appropriate management of agricultural organic waste (AOW) presents a significant obstacle in the endeavor to attain sustainable agricultural development. The proper management of AOW is a necessity for sustainable agricultural development. This can be done skillfully by incorporating microbial agents in the composting procedure. In this study, we isolated relevant bacteria strains from tomato straw AOW, which demonstrated efficient degradation of lignocellulose without any antagonistic effects in them. These strains were then combined to create a composite microbial agent called Zyco Shield (ZS). The performance of ZS was compared with a commercially effective microorganism (EM) and a control CK. The results indicate that the ZS treatment significantly prolonged the elevated temperature phase of the tomato straw pile, showing considerable degradation of lignocellulosic material. This substantial degradation did not happen in the EM and CK treatments. Moreover, there was a temperature rise of 4-6 ℃ in 2 days of thermophilic phase, which was not the case in the EM and CK treatments. Furthermore, the inoculation of ZS substantially enhanced the degradation of organic waste derived from tomato straw. This method increased the nutrient content of the resulting compost and elevated the enzymatic activity of lignocellulose-degrading enzymes, while reducing the urease enzyme activity within the pile. The concentrations of NH4+-N and NO3--N showed increases of (2.13% and 47.51%), (14.81% and 32.17%) respectively, which is again very different from the results of the EM and CK treatments. To some extent, the alterations observed in the microbial community and the abundance of functional microorganisms provide indirect evidence supporting the fact that the addition of ZS microbial agent facilitates the composting process of tomato straw. Moreover, we confirmed the degradation process of tomato straw through X-ray diffraction, Fourier infrared spectroscopy, and by scanning electron microscopy to analyze the role of ZS microbial inoculum composting. Consequently, reinoculation compost strains improves agricultural waste composting efficiency and enhances product quality.

Brown sugar as a carbon source can make agricultural organic waste compost enter the secondary thermophilic stage and promote compost decomposition

To enhance the efficiency of composting agricultural organic waste (AOW), this study aimed to examine the impact of inoculating tomato straw compost with two distinct microbial agents: ZymoZone (ZZ), a composite microbial agent derived from the straw compost and Effective Microorganisms (EM), a commercial microbial agent. Furthermore, in order to reactivate the microorganisms within the compost during the initial high temperature phase, 10% brown sugar was introduced as a carbon source. The objective of this addition was to assess its influence on the composting process. The findings revealed that compared to the control (CK) group, the ZZ and EM treatments extended the first high-temperature phase by 2 and 1 day, respectively. Furthermore, with the addition of 10% brown sugar, the ZZ and EM treatments remained in the second high-temperature phase for 8 and 7 days, respectively, while the CK treatment had already entered the cooling stage by then. Notably, the inoculation of microbial agents and the addition of brown sugar substantially augmented the activity of lignocellulose-related hydrolases, thereby promoting the degradation of lignocellulose in the ZZ and EM treatment groups. This was confirmed by FTIR analysis, which demonstrated that the addition of microbial agents facilitated the degradation of specific substances, leading to reduced absorbance in the corresponding spectra. XRD analysis further indicated a notable reduction in cellulose crystallinity for both the ZZ (8.00%) and EM (7.73%) treatments. Hence, the incorporation of microbial agents and brown sugar in tomato straw compost effectively enhances the composting process and improves the quality of compost products.

Application of biochar and humic acid improves the physiological and biochemical processes of rice (Oryza sativa L.) in conferring plant tolerance to arsenic-induced oxidative stress

Biochar (BC) and humic acid (HA) are well-documented in metal/metalloid detoxification, but their regulatory role in conferring plant oxidative stress under arsenic (As) stress is poorly understood. Therefore, we aimed at investigating the role of BC and HA (0.2 and 0.4 g kg-1 soil) in the detoxification of As (0.25 mM sodium arsenate) toxicity in rice (Oryza sativa L. cv. BRRI dhan75). Arsenic exhibited an increased lipid peroxidation, hydrogen peroxide, electrolyte leakage, and proline content which were 32, 30, 9, and 89% higher compared to control. In addition, the antioxidant defense system of rice consisting of non-enzyme antioxidants (18 and 43% decrease in ascorbate and glutathione content) and enzyme activities (23-50% reduction over control) was decreased as a result of As toxicity. The damaging effect of As was prominent in plant height, biomass acquisition, tiller number, and relative water content. Furthermore, chlorophyll and leaf area also exhibited a decreasing trend due to toxicity. Arsenic exposure also disrupted the glyoxalase system (23 and 33% decrease in glyoxalase I and glyoxalase II activities). However, the application of BC and HA recovered the reactive oxygen species-induced damages in plants, upregulated the effectiveness of the ascorbate-glutathione pool, and accelerated the activities of antioxidant defense and glyoxalase enzymes. These positive roles of BC and HA ultimately resulted in improved plant characteristics with better plant-water status and regulated proline content that conferred As stress tolerance in rice. So, it can be concluded that BC and HA effectively mitigated As-induced physiology and oxidative damage in rice plants. Therefore, BC and HA could be used as potential soil amendments in As-contaminated rice fields.

Stem cutting: A novel introduction site for transporting water-insoluble particles into tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) seedlings

The introduction of exogenous particles into plants has promising applications in agriculture and biotechnology. Nanoparticles can be transported into plants through foliar application or root uptake. However, both methods have limitations in terms of the size of the particles (<40 nm) that can be transported due to the barriers of the cell wall and cuticle. In the present study, we proposed a novel method to deliver particles of up to 110 nm into plants by cutting the stem of tomato seedlings. We demonstrated for the first time, using water-insoluble silica colloids, that not only nanoparticles but also submicron particles can be transported toward the leaves when the plant stem is used as the entry point of particles. Thirty-five-day-old tomato seedlings were used as the target plants. When the cut stem seedlings were immersed in the colloidal particle suspension for up to 24 h, significant particle accumulation was observed in the nodes and leaves. The relatively low particle concentrations (10 mg/L) allowed effective transport throughout the plants. Silica particles with average diameters of 10 nm and 110 nm were both well transported and moved through the stem. Even after the particles entered the plant, adventitious roots were formed, resulting in the formation of whole plants with roots, stems, and leaves. This method can be applied not only to tomatoes but also to other food crops for various applications in plant biotechnology.

Effect of Melissa officinalis L. leaf extract on manganese-induced cyto-genotoxicity on Allium cepa L

Although the antioxidant properties of Melissa officinalis extract (Mox) are widely known, little work has focused on its protective capacity against heavy metal stress. The primary objective of this study was to determine the potential of Mox to mitigate manganese (II) chloride (MnCI2)-induced cyto-genotoxicity using the Allium and comet assays. Physiological, genotoxic, biochemical and anatomical parameters as well as the phenolic composition of Mox were examined in Allium cepa (L.). Application of 1000 µM MnCl2 reduced the rooting percentage, root elongation, weight gain, mitotic index and levels of chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b pigments compared to the control group. However, it increased micronuclei formation, chromosomal abnormality frequencies, tail DNA percentage, proline amount, lipid peroxidation level and meristematic damage severity. The activities of superoxide dismutase and catalase also increased. Chromosomal aberrations induced by MnCl2 were fragment, sticky chromosome, vagrant chromosome, unequal distribution of chromatin and bridge. Application of 250 mg/L Mox and 500 mg/L Mox along with MnCl2 significantly alleviated adverse effects dose dependently. The antioxidant activity bestowed by the phenolic compounds in Mox assisted the organism to combat MnCl2 toxicity. Consequently, Mox exerted remarkable protection against MnCl2 toxicity and it needs to be investigated further as a potential therapeutic option.

Mitigation of arsenic accumulation in rice (Oryza sativa L.) seedlings by oxygen nanobubbles in hydroponic cultures

Arsenic (As) is a toxic non-essential metal. Its accumulation in rice has not only seriously affected the growth of rice, but also poses a significant threat to human health. Many reports have been published to decrease the arsenic accumulation in the rice plant by various additives such as chemicals, fertilizers, adsorbents, microorganisms and analyzing the mechanism. Nanobubble is a new technology widely used in agriculture because of its long existence time and high mass transfer efficiency. However, a few studies have investigated the effect of nanobubbles on arsenic uptake in rice. This study investigated the effect of oxygen nanobubbles on the growth and uptake of As in rice. The oxygen nanobubbles could rupture the salinity of nutrients and produce the hydroxyl radical. The hydroxyl radical caused the oxidation of arsenic As(III) to As (V) and the oxidation of ferrous ions. At the same time, the oxidized iron adsorbing As (V) created the iron plaque on the rice roots to stop arsenic introduction into the rice plant. The results indicated that the treatment of oxygen nanobubbles increased rice biomass under As stress, while they increased the chlorophyll content and promoted plant photosynthesis. Oxygen nanobubbles reduced the As content in rice roots to 12.5% and shoots to 46.4%. In other words, it significantly decreased As accumulation in rice. Overall, oxygen nanobubbles mitigated the toxic effects of arsenic on rice and had the potential to reduce the accumulation of arsenic in rice.

Comparative transcriptomic data confirm the findings of dehydration stress-induced redox biology of indigenous aromatic rice cultivars

The present work compares the transcriptome data sets of post-imbibitional dehydration stress-raised seedlings of two contrasting indigenous aromatic rice cultivars (Oryza sativa L., Cultivars Jamainadu and Badshabhog) for unfolding genetic regulation of dehydration stress. The result of RNA-seq analysis in Illumina platform in general revealed significant cultivar-specific expression of genes under dehydration stress that substantiate the data of redox metabolic fingerprints (assessed in terms of differential efficacy of ascorbate-glutathione pathway, ROS-antioxidant interaction dynamics and sensitive biomarkers of oxidative stress). Both the cultivars showed a diverse global transcriptomic response under water-deficit condition. Transcripts selected for heatmap generation with proper annotation revealed genes that are significantly expressed and mainly involved in redox functions, signaling, membrane trafficking, replication, protein synthesis, etc. Gene ontology (GO) analysis proposed that dehydration stress in the drought-tolerant cultivar Badshabhog was attributable to the enhanced expression of genes associated with carbon dioxide-concentrating mechanism, peroxysomal biogenesis, protein modification, protein synthesis, mitochondrial electron transport chain functioning, intercellular protein transport, histone demethylation associated with developmental process, regulation of apoptosis, etc. The redox genes that got significantly over-expressed in the IARC Badshabhog vis-à-vis Jamainadu include l-ascorbate oxidase/peroxidase, monothiol glutaredoxin-S1, thioredoxin-like protein AAED1 (chloroplastic), thioredoxin-like protein CXXS1, NADH-dehydrogenase (ubiquinone)-1-beta subcomplex subunit 3-B, NADH-dehydrogenase subunit 6 and K, lipoxygenase 6 isoform-XI, etc. Overall, the results of the RNA-seq analysis led to the identification of cultivar-specific genes, with the cultivar Badshabhog exhibiting significantly greater molecular reprogramming for redox regulation and signaling necessary for combating dehydration stress.

Using the inherent elements in yeast biomass to produce Ni2P/N-doped biocarbon composites for efficient hexavalent chromium reduction

The heterogeneous catalytic reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) is an effective strategy for aqueous Cr(VI) contamination abatement, which requires the development of highly efficient, low-cost, and recyclable catalysts. Herein, Ni2P/N-doped biocarbon composites (Ni2P/N-BC) were fabricated through an anoxic pyrolysis process using NaCl and KCl as activators. A precursor of yeast biomass provided the essential C, N, and P elements for Ni2P/N-BC formation. When adopted for Cr(VI) reduction in the presence of oxalic acid as a reductant, the fabricated Ni2P/N-BC performed superior catalytic activity with a 100% Cr(VI) reduction efficiency within 10 min (Ni2P/N-BC-5 = 0.2 g L-1, oxalic acid = 0.4 g L-1, Cr(VI) = 20 mg L-1). Typical affecting parameters, e.g., catalyst dosage, oxalic acid loading, reaction temperature, initial solution pH, and water matrix, were investigated. Ni2P/N-BC exhibited good applicability in a broad pH range from 3.0 to 9.0 and in actual aquatic systems. Cr(VI) reduction efficiency remained 92.7% after five recycle runs. Such promising catalytic activity may originate from the well-crystallized Ni2P, N-doped biocarbon framework and high specific surface area of the materials. Preliminary reaction mechanism analysis indicated that the favorable charge state of Ni2P, fast hydrogen transfer, affinity of oxalic acid to Cr(VI), and inherent electron transfer in the biocarbon matrix contributed to effective Cr(VI) reduction. This work not only provides a facile and low-cost strategy to construct Ni2P/N-doped biocarbon nanosheet composite using environmentally benign biomass but also brings new insights for the remediation of Cr(VI) contamination.

Hormesis management of Moringa oleifera with exogenous application of plant growth regulators under saline conditions

The study investigated the adaptability of Moringa oleifera to saline conditions, focusing on its hormesis behavior. It also examined how various plant growth regulators affected growth, physiological parameters, and bioactive compounds of moringa. In the first phase, different NaCl stress levels (0, 50, 100, 150, 200, and 250 mM) were applied. Notably, significant stimulation was observed at 100 mM stress for growth, total phenolics, total flavonoids and total chlorophyll content while 150 mM stress had a marked inhibitory effect, with survival decreasing at 200 and 250 mM NaCl levels. A 38% reduction in root attributes and shoot length, along with a 55% decrease in leaf score, was observed at 150 mM stress. Total phenolics showed a positive correlation with growth attributes. In the second phase, moringa plants grown under 50, 100, and 150 mM NaCl stress were treated with various plant growth regulators, including cytokinin (50 mg L-1), thiourea (5 mM), bezyl amino purine (BAP @50 mg L-1), salicylic acid (50 mg L-1), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2@120 μM), or ascorbic acid (50 mg L-1) to mitigate adverse effects of salinity. Cytokinin, BAP, and salicylic acid applications improved salinity tolerance, enhancing enzymatic, and non-enzymatic antioxidants, and the abundance of kaempferol, quercetin, hydroxybenzoic, and hydroxycinnamic acids. Pearson correlation and principal component analysis manifested relationships among growth parameters, antioxidant activities, flavonoids, and phenolic acids. This study provides new insights into hormesis management for moringa plants and the influence of plant growth regulators on flavonoids and phenolic acid levels in moringa leaves under saline conditions.

Influence of brassinosteroid and silicon on growth, antioxidant enzymes, and metal uptake of leafy vegetables under wastewater irrigation

Vegetable cultivation under sewage irrigation is a common practice mostly in developing countries due to a lack of freshwater. Long-term usage provokes heavy metals accumulation in soil and ultimately hinders the growth and physiology of crop plants and deteriorates the quality of food. A study was performed to investigate the role of brassinosteroid (BRs) and silicon (Si) on lettuce, spinach, and cabbage under lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) contaminated sewage water. The experiment comprises three treatments (control, BRs, and Si) applied under a completely randomized design (CRD) in a growth chamber. BRs and Si application resulted in the highest increase of growth, physiology, and antioxidant enzyme activities when applied under canal water followed by distilled water and sewage water. However, BRs and Si increased the above-determined attributes under the sewage water by reducing the Pb and Cd uptake as compared to the control. It's concluded that sewerage water adversely affected the growth and development of vegetables by increasing Pb and Cd, and foliar spray of Si and BRs could have great potential to mitigate the adverse effects of heavy metals and improve the growth. The long-term alleviating effect of BRs and Si will be evaluated in the field conditions at different ecological zones.

Nano-microplastic and agro-ecosystems: a mini-review

Plastics' unavoidable and rampant usage causes their trash to be extensively dispersed in the atmosphere and land due to its numerous characteristics. Because of extensive plastic usage and increased manufacturing, there is insufficient recycling and a large accumulation of microplastics (MPs) in the environment. In addition to their wide availability in the soil and atmosphere, micro- and nanoplastics are becoming contaminants worldwide. Agro-ecosystem functioning and plant development are being negatively impacted in several ways by the contamination of the environment and farmland soils with MPs (<5 mm) and nanoplastics (<1 µm). The contributions of some recyclable organic waste and plastic film mulching and plastic particle deposition in agroecosystems may be substantial; therefore, it is crucial to understand any potentially hazardous or undesirable impacts of these pollutants on agroecosystems. The dissolution of bioplastics into micro- and nano-particles (MBPs and NBPs) has not been considered in recent studies, which focus primarily on agro-ecosystems. It is essential to properly understand the distribution, concentration, fate, and main source of MPs, NPS, MBPs, and NBPs in agroecosystems. Based on the limited findings, understanding the knowledge gap of environmental impact from micro and nanoplastic in farming systems does not equate to the absence of such evidence. It reveals the considerations for addressing the gaps to effectively protect global food safety and security in the near future.

Alleviation of chromium toxicity in mung bean (Vigna radiata L.) using salicylic acid and Azospirillum brasilense

BACKGROUND

Chromium (Cr) contamination in soil poses a serious hazard because it hinders plant growth, which eventually reduces crop yield and raises the possibility of a food shortage. Cr's harmful effects interfere with crucial plant functions like photosynthesis and respiration, reducing energy output, causing oxidative stress, and interfering with nutrient intake. In this study, the negative effects of Cr on mung beans are examined, as well as investigate the effectiveness of Azospirillum brasilense and salicylic acid in reducing Cr-induced stress.

RESULTS

We investigated how different Cr levels (200, 300, and 400 mg/kg soil) affected the growth of mung bean seedlings with the use of Azospirillum brasilense and salicylic acid. Experiment was conducted with randomized complete block design with 13 treatments having three replications. Significant growth retardation was caused by Cr, as were important factors like shoot and root length, plant height, dry weight, and chlorophyll content significantly reduced. 37.15% plant height, 71.85% root length, 57.09% chlorophyll contents, 82.34% crop growth rate was decreased when Cr toxicity was @ 50 µM but this decrease was remain 27.80%, 44.70%, 38.97% and 63.42%, respectively when applied A. brasilense and Salicylic acid in combine form. Use of Azospirillum brasilense and salicylic acid significantly increased mung bean seedling growth (49%) and contributed to reducing the toxic effect of Cr stress (34% and 14% in plant height, respectively) due to their beneficial properties in promoting plant growth.

CONCLUSIONS

Mung bean seedlings are severely damaged by Cr contamination, which limits their growth and physiological characteristics. Using Azospirillum brasilense and salicylic acid together appears to be a viable way to combat stress brought on by Cr and promote general plant growth. Greater nutrient intake, increased antioxidant enzyme activity, and greater root growth are examples of synergistic effects. This strategy has the ability to reduce oxidative stress brought on by chromium, enhancing plant resistance to adverse circumstances. The study offers new perspectives on sustainable practices that hold potential for increasing agricultural output and guaranteeing food security.

Review on nitric oxide at the forefront of rapid systemic signaling in mitigation of salinity stress in plants: Crosstalk with calcium and hydrogen peroxide

Soil salinity is a global issue that limits plant growth in agricultural fields and contributes to food crisis. Salt stressors impede plant's ionic, osmotic, and oxidative balance, as well as a variety of physiological functions. Exposure to salinity stress manifest considerable ROS clustering, entailing modification in performance of various organelles. To deal with salinity, plants use a variety of coping strategies, such as osmoregulation, ion-homeostasis, increased antioxidant synthesis, and so on. Nitric oxide (NO) is a pivotal signalling molecule that helps facilitate salt stress-induced physiological plant responses. A variety of evidences point to NO being produced under similar stress conditions and with similar kinetics as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The interplay between H2O2 and NO has important functional implications for modulating plant transduction processes. Besides, NO and calcium (Ca2+)-dependent pathways also have some connection in salt stress response mechanisms. Extensive crosstalk between NO and Ca2+ signalling pathways is investigated, and it suggests that almost every type of Ca2+ channel is under the tight control of NO, and NO acts as a Ca2+ mobilising compound and aids in signal reliance. The review provides insights into understanding recent advances regarding NO's, Ca2+ and H2O2 role in salt stress reduction with entwine signaling mechanisms.

Poultices as biofilms of titanium dioxide nanoparticles/carboxymethyl cellulose/Phytagel for cleaning of infected cotton paper by Aspergillus sydowii and Nevskia terrae

In this study, TiO2 nanoparticle (TiO2NP)-coated film was produced to protect manuscripts against microorganisms using ecofriendly benign materials. As a result, a simple method was created that uses poultice biofilm made of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and Phytagel plant cell (PGP) loaded with TiO2NPs to preserve manuscripts against microbes in an environmentally responsible way. Three volumes (1, 2, 4 mL) of TiO2NPs were put into a biofilm combination to produce the poultices known as CMC/PGP/TiO2-1, CMC/PGP/TiO2-2, and CMC/PGP/TiO2-3. The synthesized TiO2NPs were nearly spherical in shape, small in size (98 nm), and stable (zeta potential value - 33 mV). The results showed that the unique deposition of TiO2NPs on the biofilm surface gave the produced films loaded with TiO2NPs a rough structure. The highest values of mechanical characteristics were determined to be in CMC/PGP/TiO2-1 with values of 25.4 g, 6.6 MPa, and 11.4%, for tensile strength, elongation at break, and tear strength, respectively. Based on molecular identification, the fungus Aspergillus sydowii and the bacterium Nevskia terrae, with accession numbers MG991624 and AB806800, respectively, were isolated and identified from an antiquated manuscript formed from cellulosic fibers. Before the experiments, the produced cotton paper samples were aged, and then, one group was infected for 6 months by A. sydowii and the second group with N. terrae. Following the preparation of a CMC/PGP biofilm loaded with various volumes of TiO2NPs, poultices were applied to infected cotton paper in order to clean it. The infected cotton paper was placed inside the sandwich-like poultices that were created. The poultice CMC/PGP/TiO2-2 demonstrated potential for preventing the growth of A. sydowii and N. terrae-infected cotton paper, when the fibers were saved, cleaned, and coated with CMC/PGP/TiO2-2 after absorbing the fungus and the bacterium and exhibiting exceptional antimicrobial activities. Finally, the novel biofilms have demonstrated their capacity to lessen microbial contamination of cotton paper. In order to generalize the usage of these poultices, it is also advised that they be produced on a large scale and tested on a variety of organic materials in the future.

Eco-corona formation diminishes the cytogenotoxicity of graphene oxide on Allium cepa: Role of soil extracted-extracellular polymeric substances in combating oxidative stress

Graphene oxide (GO) is widely acknowledged for its exceptional biological and industrial applications. However, its discharge into the environment negatively impacts the ecosystem. This study aimed to investigate the toxicity of GO in Allium cepa root tip cells and the role of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in modulating its toxic effects. To evaluate toxicity, various endpoints like cell viability using Evans blue dye, cytotoxicity (mitotic index), genotoxicity (chromosomal aberrations), and oxidative stress assessments (total ROS, superoxide, hydroxyl radical production, and lipid peroxidation) were considered. The results suggest that pristine GO caused a dose-dependent increase in various toxicity parameters, especially the genotoxic effects. Oxidative stress generation by GO is proposed to be the principal mode of action. The EPS-corona formed on GO could potentially counteract the toxic effects, substantially reducing the oxidative stress within the cells.

Comparative analysis of metabolic mechanisms in the remediation of Cd-polluted alkaline soil in cotton field by biochar and biofertilizer

To screen environmentally friendly and efficient Cd pollution remediation material, the effects of BC and BF on soil Cd bio-availability and cotton Cd absorption were analyzed under Cd exposure. Besides, the differences in metabolic mechanisms by which biochar (BC) and biofertilizer (BF) affect Cd-contaminated soil and cotton were also analyzed. The results showed that the application of BC and BF increased cotton dry matter accumulation, boll number, and single boll weight, and reduced the Cd content in cotton roots, stems, leaves, and bolls. At harvest, the Cd content in cotton roots in the BC and BF groups reduced by 15.23% and 16.33%, respectively, compared with that in the control. This was attributed to the conversion of carbonate-bound Cd (carbon-Cd) and exchangeable Cd (EX-Cd) by BC and BF into residual Cd (Res-Cd). It should be noted that the soil available Cd (Ava-Cd) content in the BF group was lower than that in the BC group. The metabolomic analysis results showed that for BC vs BF, the relative abundance of differential metabolites Caffeic acid, Xanthurenic acid, and Shikimic acid in soil and cotton roots were up-regulated. Mantel test found that cotton root exudate l-Histinine was correlated with the enrichment of Cd in various organs of cotton. Therefore, the application of BC and BF can alleviate Cd stress by reducing soil Ava-Cd content and cotton's Cd uptake, and BF is superior to BC in reducing Cd content in soil and cotton organs. This study will provide a reference for the development of efficient techniques for the remediation of Cd-polluted alkaline soil, and provide a basis for subsequent metagenomics analysis.

Exogenous melatonin enhances the tolerance of tiger nut (Cyperus esculentus L.) via DNA damage repair pathway under heavy metal stress (Cd2+) at the sprout stage

Heavy metal (HM) stress is a non-negligible abiotic stress that seriously restricts crop yield and quality, while the sprout stage is the most sensitive to stress and directly impacts the growth and development of the later stage. Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine), as an exogenous additive, enhances stress resistance due to its ability to oxidize and reduce. However, few reports on exogenous melatonin to tiger nuts under HM stress have explored whether exogenous melatonin enhances plants' resistance to heavy metals. Here, "Jisha 2″ was used as material, with a stress concentration of 5 mg/L and 100 μmol/L of CdCl2 to explore whether exogenous melatonin enhances plant resistance and molecular mechanism. The result revealed that stress limits growth, while melatonin alleviated the sprout damage under stress from the phenotypes. Moreover, stress-enhanced reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation and membrane lipid peroxidation, while melatonin-increased ROS reduce damage via the analysis of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and malondialdehyde (MDA) content, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), superoxide anion (O2-), and Electrolyte leakage (El). Further results indicated that HM leads to DNA damage while exogenous melatonin will repair the damage by analyzing random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD), DNA cross-linking, 8-hydroxy-20-deoxyguanine level, and relative density of apurinic sites. Furthermore, gene expression in the DNA-repaired pathway exhibited similar results. These results applied that exogenous melatonin released the hurt caused by HM stress, with DNA repair and ROS balance serving as candidate pathways. This study elucidated the mechanism of melatonin's influence and provided theoretical insights into its application in tiger nuts.

Salicylic acid alleviates Zn-induced inhibition of growth via enhancing antioxidant system and glutathione metabolism in alfalfa

Zinc (Zn) is considered as one of the heavy metal pollutants in soil affecting agriculture. Salicylic acid (SA) is an important phytohormone that can mitigate effects against various abiotic stresses in plants, however, its exploration to improve Zn stress tolerance in alfalfa plants is still elusive. Thus, in the present study, exogenous SA treatment was conducted on alfalfa plants under Zn stress. The effects of exogenous SA on the physiological effects of alfalfa plants and the expression levels related genes were studied. This study tested the biomass, relative water content, chlorophyll levels, photosynthetic capacity, proline and soluble sugar contents, detected the activity of antioxidant enzymes (such as peroxidase and superoxide dismutase), glutathione biosynthesis, and endogenous SA levels, and quantified the genes associated with the antioxidant system and glutathione metabolism-mediated Zn stress. The results showed that exogenous SA could elevate the physiological adaptability of alfalfa plants through enhancing photosynthesis, proline and soluble sugar levels, stimulating antioxidant system and glutathione metabolism, and inducing the transcription level of related genes, thereby diminishing oxidative stress, inhibiting excessive Zn accumulation of alfalfa plants, increasing tolerance to Zn stress, and reducing the toxicity of Zn. Collectively, the application of SA alleviates Zn toxicity in alfalfa plants. The findings gave first insights into the regulatory mechanism of the Zn stress tolerance of alfalfa by exogenous SA and this might have positive implications for managing other plants which are suffering Zn stress.

Enhancement of arsenic uptake and accumulation in green microalga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii through heterologous expression of the phosphate transporter DsPht1

Arsenate (AsV) is a predominant arsenic contaminant in aerobic water. Microalgae have been recently used in the phytoremediation of arsenic-contaminated water. However, the amount of AsV uptake in microalgae is limited, which hinders the application of microalgae in arsenic-contaminated water treatment. Here, we found that the expression of a novel phosphate transporter DsPht1 in Dunaliella salina was highly upregulated after AsV exposure. Fluorescent protein-tagging analysis showed the plasma membrane location of DsPht1. Furthermore, DsPht1 was overexpressed in a model microalga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. The DsPht1 transgenetic lines accumulated up to 6.4-fold higher total arsenic than the untransformed line, and the AsV amount in total arsenic increased by 8.3-fold. Moreover, the organoarsenic content was also higher in the transgenetic lines. Overall, the DsPht1 transformants generated in this study increased arsenate uptake and transformation, which are promising for the effective phytoremediation of arsenic-contaminated water.

Selenium-Priming mediated growth and yield improvement of turnip under saline conditions

Salt toxicity is one of the foremost environmental stresses that declines nutrient uptake, photosynthetic activity and growth of plants resulting in a decrease in crop yield and quality. Seed priming has become an emergent strategy to alleviate abiotic stress and improve plant growth. During the current study, turnip seed priming with sodium selenite (Na2SeO3) was investigated for its ability to mitigate salt stress. Turnip (Brassica rapa L. var. Purple Top White Globe) seeds primed with 75, 100, and 125 μML-1 of Se were subjected to 200 mM salt stress under field conditions. Findings of the current field research demonstrated that salt toxicity declined seed germination, chlorophyll content, and gas exchange characteristics of B. rapa seedling. Whereas, Se-primed seeds showed higher germination rate and plant growth which may be attributed to the decreased level of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and malondialdehyde (MDA) decreased synthesis of proline (36%) and besides increased total chlorophyll (46%) in applied turnip plants. Higher expression levels of genes encoding antioxidative activities (CAT, POD, SO,D and APX) mitigated oxidative stress induced by the salt toxicity. Additionally, Se treatment decreased Na+ content and enhanced K+ content resulting in elevated K+/Na+ ratio in the treated plants. The in-silico assessment revealed the interactive superiority of Se with antioxidant enzymes including CAT, POD, SOD, and APX as compared to sodium chloride (NaCl). Computational study of enzymes-Se and enzymes-NaCl molecules also revealed the stress ameliorative potential of Se through the presence of more Ramachandran-favored regions (94%) and higher docking affinities of Se (-6.3). The in-silico studies through molecular docking of Na2SeO3, NaCl, and ROS synthesizing enzymes (receptors) including cytochrome P450 (CYP), lipoxygenase (LOX), and xanthine oxidase (XO), also confirmed the salt stress ameliorative potential of Se in B. rapa. The increased Ca, P, Mg, and Zn nutrients uptake nutrients uptake in 100 μML-1 Se primed seedlings helped to adjust the stomatal conductivity (35%) intercellular CO2 concentration (32%), and photosynthetic activity (41%) resulting in enhancement of the yield attributes. More number of seeds per plant (6%), increased turnip weight (115 gm) root length (17.24 cm), root diameter (12 cm) as well as turnip yield increased by (9%tons ha-1) were recorded for 100 μML-1 Se treatment under salinity stress. Findings of the current research judiciously advocate the potential of Se seed priming for salt stress alleviation and growth improvement in B. rapa.

Optimization and mechanistic approach for removal of crystal violet and methylene blue dyes via activated carbon from pyrolyzed-ZnCl2 bamboo waste

In this study, bamboo waste (BW) was subjected to pyrolysis-assisted ZnCl2 activation to produce mesoporous activated carbon (BW-AC), which was then evaluated for its ability to remove cationic dyes, specifically methylene blue (MB) and crystal violet (CV), from aqueous environments. The properties of BW-AC were characterized using various techniques, including potentiometric-based point of zero charge (pHpzc), scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-rays (SEM-EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), gas adsorption with Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, infrared (IR) spectroscopy. To optimize the adsorption characteristics (BW-AC dosage, pH, and contact time) of PBW, a Box-Behnken design (BBD) was employed. The BW-AC dose of 0.05 g, solution pH of 10, and time of 8 min are identified as optimal operational conditions for achieving maximum CV (89.8%) and MB (96.3%) adsorption according to the BBD model. The dye removal kinetics for CV and MB are described by the pseudo-second-order model. The dye adsorption isotherms revealed that adsorption of CV and MB onto BW-AC follow the Freundlich model. The maximum dye adsorption capacities (qmax) of BW-AC for CV (530 mg/g) and MB (520 mg/g) are favorable, along with the thermodynamics of the adsorption process, which is characterized as endothermic and spontaneous. The adsorption mechanism of CV and MB dyes by BW-AC was attributed to multiple contributions: hydrogen bonding, electrostatic forces, π-π attraction, and pore filling. The findings of this study highlight the potential of BW-AC as an effective adsorbent in wastewater treatment applications, contributing to the overall goal of mitigating the environmental impact of cationic dyes and ensuring the quality of water resources.

The traces elements absorption, accumulation and translocation ability of Phragmites australis

In this study, the wastewater analyses of Oued K'sob for one year showed a spatiotemporal diminution of zinc content seasonally, it rest light than copper. But Zinc and copper a threat to the environment of the region. The wastewater analyses of Oued K'sob water for one year showed a spatiotemporal diminution of zinc content seasonally, with a minimum and maximum range of 249 ± 219 µg/l and 2382 ± 3426 µg/l obtained in autumn and summer for the zinc and 75 ± 24 µg/l and 433 ± 310 µg/l obtained in winter and spring at the first and fifth station for the copper. These concentrations of zinc and copper a threat to the environment of the region. Like a solution for this problem, the absorption, accumulation and translocation abilities of Phragmites australis were determined toward iron (Fe), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn) and lead (Pb). In the soils contaminated by different concentrations (100, 200 and 500 mg/L), the absorption, accumulation and transport ability of elements were evaluated via the Bio-concentration (BCF), Bioaccumulation (BF) and Translocation (TF) factors. A proportional increase between the BCF, BFs, TFs and the irrigation concentrations, where BCFs of all metallic elements exceed 1 and the Zn BCF, BFs and TFL are the highest and exceed 1 relative to the other elements which remain lower than 1, which has a low accumulation. Therefore, according to the BCFs obtained and which exceed 1, we can consider this plant as a hyper-accumulator of Zn, Fe, Cu and Pb. Extraction of fatty and organic acids followed by HPLC confirmed the oxalic, citric, malic, succinic, fumaric, formic, acetic, propionic, and butyric acid presence, which are responsible for the transport of the metal from roots to leaves. In the light of these results, we can therefore propose Phragmites australis species as an alternative and natural solution to reduce the high concentrations of zinc and copper in the Oued k'sob (region of Bordj Bou Arreridj, Algeria).

Resilient and sustainable production of peanut (Arachis hypogaea) in phosphorus-limited environment by using exogenous gamma-aminobutyric acid to sustain photosynthesis

Globally, many low to medium yielding peanut fields have the potential for further yield improvement. Low phosphorus (P) limitation is one of the significant factors curtailing Arachis hypogaea productivity in many regions. In order to demonstrate the effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) on peanuts growing under P deficiency, we used a pot-based experiment to examine the effects of exogenous GABA on alleviating P deficiency-induced physiological changes and growth inhibition in peanuts. The key physiological parameters examined were foliar gas exchange, photochemical efficiency, proton motive force, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) synthase activity of peanuts under cultivation with low P (LP, 0.5 mM P) and control conditions. During low P, the cyclic electron flow (CEF) maintained the high proton gradient (∆pH) induced by low ATP synthetic activity. Applying GABA during low P conditions stimulated CEF and reduced the concomitant ROS generation and thereby protecting the foliar photosystem II (PSII) from photoinhibition. Specifically, GABA enhanced the rate of electronic transmission of PSII (ETRII) by pausing the photoprotection mechanisms including non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) and ∆pH regulation. Thus, GABA was shown to be effective in restoring peanut growth when encountering P deficiency. Exogenous GABA alleviated two symptoms (increased root-shoot ratio and photoinhibition) of P-deficient peanuts. This is possibly the first report of using exogenous GABA to restore photosynthesis and growth under low P availability. Therefore, foliar applications of GABA could be a simple, safe and effective approach to overcome low yield imposed by limited P resources (low P in soils or P-fertilizers are unavailable) for sustainable peanut cultivation and especially in low to medium yielding fields.

RING finger ubiquitin E3 ligase CsCHYR1 targets CsATAF1 for degradation to modulate the drought stress response of cucumber through the ABA-dependent pathway

CsCHYR1 (CHY ZINC-FINGER AND RING PROTEIN1) encodes a RING (Really Interesting New Gene) finger E3 ubiquitin ligase involved in ubiquitin-mediated protein degradation and plays an important role for cucumber to resist drought stress. Here, we obtain one of the candidate proteins CsCHYR1 that probably interacts with CsATAF1 by yeast-two hybrid screening. Subsequently, it is verified that CsCHYR1 interacts with CsATAF1 and has self-ubiquitination activity. When the cysteine residue at 180 in the RING domain of CsCHYR1 is replaced by serine or alanine, ubiquitin could not be transported from E2 to the substrate. CsCHYR1 ubiquitinates CsATAF1 and affects the stability of CsATAF1 when plants are subjected to drought stress. The expression level of CsCHYR1 is increased by 4-fold after ABA treatment at 9 h. The Atchyr1 mutants perform an ABA-hyposensitive phenotype and have a lower survival rate than Col-0 and CsCHYR1 Atchyr1 lines. In addition, CsCHYR1 interacts with CsSnRK2.6. Therefore, our study reveals a CsSnRK2.6-CsCHYR1-CsATAF1 complex to promote the drought stress response by decreasing CsATAF1 protein accumulation and inducing stomatal closure. Those findings provide new ideas for cucumber germplasm innovation from the perspective of biochemistry and molecular biology.

How could actinobacteria augment the growth and redox homeostasis in barley plants grown in TiO2NPs-contaminated soils? A growth and biochemical study

The increases in titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2-NPs) released into the environment have raised concerns about their toxicity. However, their phytotoxic impact on plants is not well studied. Therefore, this study aimed at a deeper understanding of the TiO2-NPs phytotoxic impact on barley (Hordeum vulgare) growth and stress defense. We also hypothesized that soil inoculation with bioactive Rhodospirillum sp. JY3 strain can be applied as a biological fertilizer to alleviate TiO2-NPs phytotoxicity. At TiO2-NPs phytotoxicity level, photosynthesis was significantly retarded (∼50% reduction) in TiO2-NPs treated-barley plants which accordingly affect the biomass of barley plants. This retardation was accompanied by a remarkable induction of oxidative damage (H2O2, lipid peroxidation) with a concomitant reduction in the antioxidant defense metabolism. At a glance, Rhodospirillum sp. JY3 ameliorated the reduction in growth by enhancing the photosynthetic efficiency in contaminated barley plants. Moreover, Rhodospirillum sp. JY3 inoculation reduced the oxidative damage induced by TiO2-NPs via quenching H2O2 production and lipid peroxidation. Regarding the antioxidant defense arsenal, Rhodospirillum sp. JY3 enhanced both enzymatic (e.g. peroxidase (POX), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), …. etc.) and non-enzymatic (glutathione (GSH), ascorbate (ASC), polyphenols, flavonoids, tocopherols) antioxidants in shoots and to a greater extent roots of barley plants. Moreover, the inoculation significantly enhanced the heavy metal-detoxifying metabolites (eg. phytochelatins, glutaredoxin, thioredoxin, peroxiredoxin) as well as metal-detoxifying enzymes in barley shoots and more apparently in roots of TiO2-NPs stressed plants. Furthermore, there was an organ-specific response to TiO2-NPs and Rhodospirillum sp. JY3. To this end, this study shed light, for the first time, on the molecular bases underlie TiO2-NPs stress mitigating impact of Rhodospirillum sp. JY3 and it introduced Rhodospirillum sp. JY3 as a promising eco-friendly tool in managing environmental risks to maintain agricultural sustainability.

Differences of cadmium uptake and accumulation in roots of two maize varieties (Zea mays L.)

Different maize varieties respond differentially to cadmium (Cd) stress. As the first organ in contact with the soil, the response of the root is particularly important. However, the physiological mechanisms that determine the response are not well defined. Here, we compared the differences in Cd-induced related gene expression, ionic homeostasis, and ultrastructural changes in roots of Cd-tolerant maize variety (XR57) and Cd-sensitive maize variety (LY296), and assessed their effects on Cd uptake and accumulation. Our findings indicate that XR57 absorbed a significantly lower Cd than LY296 did, and that the expression levels of genes related to Cd uptake (ZmNRAMP5 and ZmZIP4) and efflux (ZmABCG4) in the root were consistent with the Cd absorption at the physiological levels. Compared with LY296, the lower Cd concentration in the roots of XR57 caused less interference with the ion balance. Transmission electron microscope images revealed that the roots from XR57 exposed to Cd had developed thicker cell walls than LY296. In addition, the large increase ZmABCC1 and ZmABCC2 expression levels in XR57 mediated the appearance of numerous electron-dense granules in the vacuoles present in the roots. As a result, the high Cd tolerance of XR57 is the result of a multi-level response that involves increased resistance to Cd uptake, a stronger capacity for vacuolar regionalization, and the formation of thicker cell walls. These findings may provide a theoretical basis for maize cultivation in Cd-contaminated areas.

Hormetic dose responses induced by nickel oxide nanoparticles (NiONPs) on growth, biochemical, and antioxidant defense systems of Dracocephalum kotschyi

The application of nickel oxide nanoparticles (NiONPs) in various fields leads to their release into soil and water and, consequently, interaction with plants. Unlike its bulk counterpart, the phytotoxic potential of NiONPs is relatively less studied, particularly in a hormesis framework. Hormesis is an interesting phenomenon characterized by low-dose stimulation and high-dose inhibition. Therefore, this study demonstrates the stimulatory and inhibitory effects of NiONPs on Dracocephalum kotschyi Boiss as a medicinal plant cultivated in a pot experiment carried out in a greenhouse for 3 weeks. High bioaccumulation of nickel (Ni) in roots of treated plants relative to shoots indicates higher oxidative damage. NiONPs induced hormetic effects on photosynthetic pigments, as at low concentration of 50 mg/L stimulated chlorophyll (2.8-46.7%), carotenoid (16%), and anthocyanin (5.9%) contents and at higher concentrations inhibited the content of these pigments. A hormetic response was observed in growth parameters, i.e., NiONPs induced shoot height (7.2%) and weight (33%) at 100 mg/L, while inhibited shoot and root length (14.5-16.1% and 28.7-42.7%) and weight (46.8-48.1% and 37-40.6%), respectively, at 1000 and 2500 mg/L. The treated plants declined the toxic effects and oxidative stress caused by NiONPs by activating non-enzymatic antioxidants (phenolic compounds and proline) and enzymatic antioxidants, i.e., increasing the levels of SOD, POD, CAT, and APX. Therefore, the present study investigated for the first time the different mechanisms and responses of D. kotschyi plants to NiONPs in a wide range of concentrations. The results suggest that NiONPs may act as an elicitor at lower concentrations in medicinal plants according to specific conditions. However, these NPs at higher concentrations induce oxidative stress and harmful effects on plants, so their use poses serious risks to human health and the environment.

Altitude governs the air pollution tolerance and heavy metal accumulation in plants

Plant response to changing air pollution is a function of various factors including meteorology, type of pollutants, plant species, soil chemistry, and geography. However, the impact of altitude on plant behavior has received little attention to date. A study was therefore conducted to evaluate the impact of altitude on the air pollution tolerance index (APTI), heavy metal accumulation, and deposition in plant species. The results favor the hypothesis of a definite impact of altitude on biochemical and heavy metal accumulation in plants. While a significant decline (p < 0.05) in the relative water content (RWC), APTI, and heavy metal accumulation with increasing altitude was evident in the studied plant species, the behavior of ascorbic acid, leaf extract pH, chlorophyll content, and the particle heavy metal deposition was erratic and did not display any statistically significant differences. The metal accumulation index was in the following order: Ni > Zn > Cu > Pb > Cd > Co. Similarly, the particle heavy metal deposition on the leaf surface (µg/cm2) displayed significant species variability (p < 0.05) and was in the order: Cu (0.303) > Pb (0.301) > Ni (0.269) > Zn (0.241) > Cd (0.044) > Co (0.025). The accumulated heavy metal and RWC showcased a significant positive correlation with the APTI, suggesting the dominant role of RWC in the plant's tolerance against air pollution in an altitudinal gradient. Future studies on the role of micrometeorological conditions in altering APTI may be fruitful in ascertaining these postulations.

Study on the removal effect and mechanism of calcined pyrite powder on Cr(VI)

Pyrite exhibits considerable potential as an adsorbent in wastewater treatment. However, few pyrite adsorbents are directly obtained from natural pyrite, as most are composite materials that require a complex preparation process. To develop a pyrite-based adsorbent with a simple preparation process, pyrite was processed by calcination at 400, 600, and 800 °C for 4 h and ball-milled into a fine powder. The adsorption properties of the pyrite powder were systematically explored. The calcined pyrite powder was characterized by SEM-EDS and XRD. The results revealed that the pyrite calcined at 600 °C exhibited excellent adsorption properties and was primarily composed of Fe7S8. The optimum conditions for Cr(VI) removal were a temperature of 45 °C, an adsorbent dosage of 1 g, an equilibration time of 60 min, and an initial pH of 3. Moreover, the calcined pyrite powder exhibited excellent reusability, and the Cr(VI) removal rate exceeded 65% after three cycles. The Cr(VI) adsorption on pyrite can be well described by the Freundlich model and pseudo-second-order kinetic equation. The calcination temperature is the main factor affecting the adsorption performance of pyrite. Therefore, the calcined pyrite powder is expected to be an excellent adsorbent for Cr(VI) in the wastewater treatment industry.

Characterization of thioredoxin gene TaTrxh9 associated with heading-time regulation in wheat

Thioredoxins (Trxs) are thiol-disulfide oxidoreductase proteins that play important roles in a spectrum of processes linking redox regulation and signaling in plants. However, little is known about Trxs and their biological functions in wheat, one of the most important food crops worldwide. This study reports the identification and functional characterization of an h-type Trx gene, TaTrxh9, in wheat. Three homoeologs of TaTrxh9 were identified and the sequences in the coding region were highly consistent among the homoeologs. Protein characterization showed that a conserved Trx_family domain, as well as a typical active site with a dithiol signature (WCGPC), was included in TaTrxh9. Structural modeling demonstrated that TaTrxh9 could fold into a canonical thioredoxin structure consisting of five-stranded antiparallel beta sheets sandwiched between four alpha helices. The insulin disulfide reduction assay demonstrated that TaTrxh9 was catalytically active in vitro. TaTrxh9 overexpression in the Arabidopsis mutant trxh9 complemented the abnormal growth phenotypes of the mutant, suggesting is functionality in vivo. The transcription level of TaTrxh9 was higher in leaf tissues and it was differentially expressed during the development of wheat plants. Interestingly, barley stripe mosaic virus-mediated suppression of TaTrxh9 shortened the seedling-heading period of wheat. Furthermore, CRISPR-Cas9 mediated gene knockout confirmed that the TaTrxh9 mutation resulted in early heading of wheat. To our knowledge, this study is the first to report that Trxh is associated with heading-time regulation, which lays a foundation for further exploring the biological function of TaTrxh9 and provides new ideas for molecular breeding focusing on early heading in wheat.

Mitigation of Acetamiprid Residue Disruption on Pea Seed Germination by Selenium Nanoparticles and Lentinans

The use of pesticides for pest control during the storage period of legume seeds is a common practice. This study evaluated the disruptive effects on pea seed germination and the repair effects of selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) and lentinans (LNTs) This study examined the biomass, nutrient content, antioxidant indicators, plant hormones, phenolic compounds, and metabolites associated with the lignin biosynthesis pathway in pea sprouts. The application of acetamiprid resulted in a significant decrease in yield, amino-acid content, and phenolic compound content of pea sprouts, along with observed lignin deposition. Moreover, acetamiprid residue exerted a notable level of stress on pea sprouts, as evidenced by changes in antioxidant indicators and plant hormones. During pea seed germination, separate applications of 5 mg/L SeNPs or 20 mg/L LNTs partially alleviated the negative effects induced by acetamiprid. When used in combination, these treatments restored most of the aforementioned indicators to levels comparable to the control group. Correlation analysis suggested that the regulation of lignin content in pea sprouts may involve lignin monomer levels, reactive oxygen species (ROS) metabolism, and plant hormone signaling mediation. This study provides insight into the adverse impact of acetamiprid residues on pea sprout quality and highlights the reparative mechanism of SeNPs and LNTs, offering a quality assurance method for microgreens, particularly pea sprouts. Future studies can validate the findings of this study from the perspective of gene expression.

Foliar spray of La2O3 nanoparticles regulates the growth, antioxidant parameters, and nitrogen metabolism of fragrant rice seedlings in wet and dry nurseries

Nanoparticles (NPs) have been widely used in agriculture, and lanthanum oxide nanoparticles (La2O3) NPs can regulate plant growth. La2O3 NPs treatment was hypothesized to affect the accumulation and distribution of substances in rice seedlings under wet and dry nursery conditions. The objective of the present study was to ascertain the effects of La2O3 NPs foliar spray on the morphology and physiology of fragrant rice seedlings under wet and dry nursery conditions. Seedlings of two fragrant rice cultivars, namely 'Xiangyaxiangzhan' and 'Yuxiangyouzhan,' were grown under wet and dry nursery conditions with La2O3 NPs treatments at three concentrations (CK, La2O3 NPs 0 mg L-1; T1, La2O3 NPs 20 mg L-1; and T2, La2O3 NPs 40 mg L-1). The results showed that the seedling-raising method was significantly associated with La2O3 NPs application (P < 0.05), affecting the leaf area of both cultivars. Changes in plant morphological parameters, such as dry weight and root-shoot ratio, were the reasons for the differences in cultivars in response to La2O3 NPs application. Changes were also observed in the plant morphological and physiological parameters of leaf area, specific leaf area, chlorophyll contents, antioxidant properties, and activities of nitrogen metabolism enzymes. The relationship between morphological and physiological processes in fragrant rice was investigated to test the hypothesis. In both wet and dry nursery methods, the T2 concentration of La2O3 NPs was beneficial for rice seedlings and significantly increased their leaf area due to changes in morphological and physiological parameters. Therefore, the results of this study provide a theoretical basis for expanding the research on La2O3 NPs application in rice, as well as relevant references for strengthening rice seedlings in the nursery, which has a positive effect on the grain yield improvement in fragrant rice.

Partially substituting chemical NPK fertilizers and their impact on Eureka lemon trees (Citrus limon L. Burm) productivity and fruit quality

The main aim of this study is to improve productivity, physical and chemical properties of the fruits and fruit quality of Eureka Lemon trees while lowering production costs by investigating the use of different NPK alternative sources (slow release, and bio) to reduce the use of chemical NPK fertilizers. Ten treatments of NPK fertilizers were applied. The results indicate that the highest values of yield (111.0 and 114.0 kg/tree) were found with 100% chemical NPK (control) for both first and second seasons, respectively. The lemon fruit weight ranged from 131.3 to 152.4 and 131.4 to 153.5 g for first and second seasons, respectively, for all treatments under study. The highest values of fruit length and fruit diameter were found with 100% chemical NPK (control) for both two seasons. The highest values of juice quality parameters (TSS, juice acidity, TSS/acid ratio and vitamin C concentration) responded favorably to higher chemical NPK treatment rates. The highest values of TSS, juice acidity, TSS/Acid ratio, and vitamin C concentration were 9.45%, 6.25%, 1.524 and 4.27 mg/100 g, respectively, were found with 100% chemical NPK (control) for both two seasons. Meanwhile, the lowest value of total sugar was found with 100% chemical NPK (control) for both two seasons.

Exogenous glutathione can alleviate chromium toxicity in kenaf by activating antioxidant system and regulating DNA methylation

Glutathione (GSH) participates in plant response to heavy metals (HMs) stress, however, the epigenetic regulating mechanisms of GSH in HMs detoxification remains unclear. In this study, to reveal the potential epigenetic regulating mechanisms, kenaf seedlings were treated with/without GSH under chromium (Cr) stress. A comprehensive physiological, genome-wide DNA methylation and gene functional analysis were performed. Results showed that external GSH obviously recovered Cr-induced growth inhibition, significantly decreased H₂O₂, O₂^.- and MDA accumulation, increased the activities of antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT, GR and APX) in kenaf exposed to Cr. In addition, the expression level of the main DNA methyltransferase (MET1, CMT3 and DRM1) and demethylase (ROS1, DEM, DML2, DML3 and DDM1) genes were investigated by qRT-PCR. The result indicated that Cr stress decreased DNA methyltransferase genes expression while increased demethylase genes expression; however, apply exogenous GSH led to the recovery trend. These indicating exogenous GSH alleviation Cr stress on kenaf seedlings by increasing DNA methylation level. At the same time, the MethylRAD-seq genome-wide DNA methylation analysis showed the DNA methylation level was significantly increased after GSH treatment compared with Cr treatment alone. The differentially methylated genes (DMGs) were uniquely enriched in DNA repair, flavin adenine dinucleotide binding and oxidoreductase activity. Furthermore, a ROS homeostasis-associated DMG, HcTrx, was selected for further functional analysis. Results showed that the knock-down of HcTrx kenaf seedlings displayed yellow-green phenotype and impaired antioxidant enzyme activity; in contrast, the overexpression lines of HcTrx improved chlorophyll levels and enhanced Cr tolerance in Arabidopsis. Taken together, our results illustrate the novel role of GSH-mediated Cr detoxification in kenaf by modulating the DNA methylation, and thus further affect the activation of antioxidant defense systems. The present characterized Cr tolerant gene resource could be further used for kenaf Cr tolerant breeding via genetic improvement.

Synergistic impacts of ferromanganese oxide biochar and optimized water management on reducing Cd accumulation in rice

Ferromanganese oxide biochar composite (FMBC) is an efficient remediation material for cadmium -contaminated soils. However, the effect of FMBC under varied water managements on the remediation of Cd-polluted soil is unclear. In this study, we conducted both incubation and field experiments to investigate the combined effects of corn-stover-derived biochar modified with ferromanganese on the immobilization and uptake of Cd by rice under continuous aerobic (A), aerobic-flooded (AF), and flooded-aerobic (FA) water management regimes. The results showed that loading iron-manganese significantly increased the maximum sorption capacity (Qm) of Cd on FMBC (50.46 mg g^-1) due to increased surface area, as compared to the pristine biochar (BC, 31.36 mg g^-1). The results revealed that soil Eh and pH were significantly affected by FMBC and it's synergistic application with different water regimes, thus causing significant differences in the concentrations of DTPA-extractable Cd under different treatments. The lowest DTPA-extractable Cd content (0.28-0.46 mg^-1) was observed in the treatment with FMBC (2.5 %) combined FA water amendment, which reduced the content of available Cd in soil by 2.63-28.4 %. Moreover, the treatments with FMBC-FA resulted the proportion of residual Cd increased by 22.2 % compared to the control. Variations in the content and fraction of Cd had a significant influence on its accumulation in the rice grains. The FMBC-FA treatments reduced the Cd concentration in roots, shoots and grains by 37.97 %, 33.98 %, and 53.66 %, respectively, when compared with the control. Predominantly because of the reduction in Cd biological toxicity and the improved soil nutrient content, the combined application increased the biomass and yield of rice to some extent. Taken together, the combination of the Fe-Mn modified biochar and flooded-aerobic water management may potentially be applied in Cd-polluted soil to mitigate the impacts of Cd on rice production.

Analysis of Metabolites and Metabolic Pathways of Three Chinese Jujube Cultivar

Most studies on metabolites in jujube fruits focus on specific types of metabolites, but there are only a few comprehensive reports on the metabolites in jujube fruits. In order to understand the variance of metabolites in fruits of different jujube varieties. The objective of this study was to explore the metabolic components of jujube fruit by comparing three cultivars, namely Linyi LiZao (LZ), Jiaocheng SuantianZao (STZ), and Xianxian Muzao (MZ). The metabolites present in the fruits of these three cultivars were evaluated and compared. The results revealed the detection of 1059 metabolites across the three jujube varieties, with each cultivar exhibiting distinct metabolic characteristics. Notably, MZ exhibited a higher abundance of six metabolite classes, namely amino acids and derivatives, flavonoids, lipids, organic acids, phenolic acids, and terpenoids, compared to LZ. Conversely, LZ exhibited higher concentrations of alkaloids, lignans, coumarins, nucleotides, and their derivatives compared to the other two cultivars. In terms of STZ, its content of amino acids and derivatives, lignans and coumarins, organic acids, and phenolic acids was largely similar to that of LZ. However, the content of alkaloids, nucleotides, and their derivatives, and terpenoids was significantly higher in STZ compared to LZ. Additionally, STZ exhibited lower levels of flavonoids and lipids compared to LZ. Moreover, MZ was found to be less nutritionally rich than STZ, except for lignans and coumarins, as it displayed lower levels of all the metabolites. KEGG pathway enrichment analysis revealed six significantly different metabolic pathways (p < 0.05) between LZ and MZ, including arginine and proline metabolism, sphingolipid metabolism, flavonoid biosynthesis, glutathione metabolism, glycerophospholipid metabolism, and cysteine and methionine metabolism. The metabolites in STZ and MZ exhibited three significantly different pathways (p < 0.05), primarily associated with flavonoid biosynthesis, arginine and proline metabolism, and sphingolipid metabolism. The significantly differential metabolites between LZ and STZ were observed in the phenylpropionic acid biosynthesis pathway and the ubiquinone and other terpenoid-quinone biosynthesis pathways. LZ showed a closer relationship with STZ than with MZ. STZ and LZ exhibited higher medicinal values, while LZ had lower acidity and MZ displayed better antioxidant activity. This study presents the first thorough analysis of metabolites in LZ, STZ, and MZ cultivars, which can serve as a theoretical basis for quality analysis, functional research, and classification processing of jujube fruit.

A brief study on the role of cerium oxide nanoparticles in growth and alleviation of mercury-induced stress in Vigna radiata and soil bacteria Bacillus coagulans

Cerium oxide nanoparticles have so far been investigated for their role as an antioxidant in pathologies involving inflammation and high oxidative stress. However, its role as a plant and bacterial growth modulator and heavy metal stress reliever has been overlooked to date. Heavy metal contamination poses a major threat to mankind and the life-sustaining ecosystem. This study emphasizes the role of cerium oxide produced by the combustion method in promoting growth in Vigna radiata and Bacillus coagulans in the presence of mercury. The results show that cerium oxide nanoparticles significantly reduce the production of reactive oxygen species, hydrogen peroxide, and product of lipid peroxidation malondialdehyde in plants grown in the presence of 50 ppm mercury, thereby reducing oxidative stress. Nanoceria also increases plant growth with respect to those growing solely in mercury. Nanoceria alone does not significantly affect the growth of Vigna radiata as well as Bacillus coagulans and Escherichia coli, thereby proving its non-hazardous nature. It also significantly increases the growth of Bacillus coagulans at 25 ppm and 50 ppm of mercury. This study throws light upon the biologically non-hazardous nature of this particle by revealing how it promotes the growth of two soil bacteria Bacillus coagulans and E.coli at various dosages. The results of this study pave the way for the use of cerium oxide nanoparticles in plants and various other organisms to combat abiotic stress.

Evaluation of carbon dioxide elevation on phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity of red onion (Allium cepa L.) during postharvest storage

Carbon dioxide (CO₂) is considered one of the eco-related key factors that negatively affect global climatic change. Also, CO₂ can play an important role in the postharvest quality of the agri-products. In this study, the impact of CO₂ on the quality of postharvest onions that were stored at 23 °C for 8 weeks was investigated. The weight loss, phenolic, flavonoid, flavanol, anthocyanin, antioxidant activity, and soluble sugar were analyzed during the study period. The results showed that 20% CO₂ treatment was significantly (P > 0.05) more effective than 15% CO₂ and control in inhibiting weight loss. Additionally, 20% CO₂ treatment significantly retained higher antioxidant enzyme activities such as CAT, APX, and SOD than 15% CO₂ and control. During storage, 20% CO₂ treatment significantly (P < 0.05) improved glucose, fructose, and sucrose levels by more than 15% CO₂ exposure and control groups. Besides the chlorogenic acid, kaempferol and quercetin were significantly (P < 0.05) higher in the 20% CO₂ than in the 15% CO₂ after 2 weeks of storage. In conclusion, this study's novelty comes from the broad prospects of using CO₂ for maximizing the stored onion phytochemical functionality that is usually affected by the room temperature long storage. This will help in the onion shelf-life extension by considering the quality-related attributes.
