Modified (NHC)Pd(allyl)Cl (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene) complexes for room-temperature Suzuki-Miyaura and Buchwald-Hartwig reactions

Unveiling the full reaction path of the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling in a single-molecule junction

Conventional analytic techniques that measure ensemble averages and static disorder provide essential knowledge of the reaction mechanisms of organic and organometallic reactions. However, single-molecule junctions enable the in situ, label-free and non-destructive sensing of molecular reaction processes at the single-event level with an excellent temporal resolution. Here we deciphered the mechanism of Pd-catalysed Suzuki-Miyaura coupling by means of a high-resolution single-molecule platform. Through molecular engineering, we covalently integrated a single molecule Pd catalyst into nanogapped graphene point electrodes. We detected sequential electrical signals that originated from oxidative addition/ligand exchange, pretransmetallation, transmetallation and reductive elimination in a periodic pattern. Our analysis shows that the transmetallation is the rate-determining step of the catalytic cycle and clarifies the controversial transmetallation mechanism. Furthermore, we determined the kinetic and thermodynamic constants of each elementary step and the overall catalytic timescale of this Suzuki-Miyaura coupling. Our work establishes the single-molecule platform as a detection technology for catalytic organochemistry that can monitor transition-metal-catalysed reactions in real time.

Substituent Effects and the Energetics of Noncatalyzed Aryl Halide Aminations: A Theoretical Investigation

We report the influence of substituents and physical conditions on activation energies for the noncatalyzed amination (C-N cross-coupling reactions) of aryl halides. We uncover a significant correlation between the barrier heights of the C-N bond formation and Hammett σ parameters-a formal measure of the electron-withdrawing or -donating ability of substituents on the aryl halides. Our results indicate that such correlations are useful predictive tools for the amination of aryl halides over a wide range of substituent types. From 54 cases studied (six substituents occupying specific positions relative to halogen atoms), the 2-COOHPhI + NH₂ ⁿ Pr amination reaction is predicted to possess the lowest noncatalyzed activation free energy (135.6 kJ mol^-1) using the B3LYP method. The lower barriers for the 2-COOHPhX (for X = Cl, Br, and I) compounds are shown to originate from collusion between steric and electronic effects-specifically, the momentary formation of a hydrogen bond between an oxygen site on the ortho-COOH and the lone pair of the entering amine. Internal reaction coordinate (IRC) path calculations afforded us these and other key insights into the nature of the reactions. The control exerted by substituents on the arrangement of the transition state structure, as well as the sensitivity of the reaction barriers to temperature and solvent polarity, are discussed. These results offer new perspectives from which to assess the nature of the C-N bond formation and suggest new avenues for future exploration, especially in progress toward the metal-free amination of aryl compounds.

Recent advances in the synthesis and derivatization of N-heterocyclic carbene metal complexes

N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) metal complexes have gained an incredible amount of attention in the course of the last two decades and have become indispensable as an intricate part of a plethora of applications. The areas of their synthesis and derivatization are constantly evolving and bring new, more sustainable, cost-effective and simpler approaches to the design of existing and next generation catalysts and materials. This article provides an overview of the latest developments, focusing on those which have appeared during the last two years.

Ylide-Substituted Phosphines with a Cyclic Ylide-Backbone: Angle Dependence of the Donor Strength

Ylide-substituted phosphines (YPhos) have been shown to be highly electron-rich and efficient ligands in a variety of palladium catalyzed transformations. Here, the synthesis and characterization of novel YPhos ligands containing a cyclic backbone architecture are reported. The ligands are easily synthesized from a cyclic phosphonium salt and the chlorophosphines Cy2PCl (L1) and Cy(FluMe)PCl (L2, with FluMe = 9-methylfluorenyl) and were characterized in both solution and solid states. The smaller PCy2-substituted ligand, L1, readily formed the biscoordinate L1 2 Pd species when treated with Pd2(dba)3 and showed no activity in palladium-catalyzed amination reactions even when applied as defined palladium(II) η3-allyl, t-Bu-indenyl, or cinnamyl precursors. Bulkier fluorenyl-substituted ligand L2 similarly was inactive, despite its ability to form the stable monophosphine complex L2·Pd(dba). Assessment of the electronic properties by experimental and computational methods revealed that L1 and L2 are considerably less electron-rich than previously synthesized YPhos ligands. This was shown to be the result of the small P-C-S bond angle, which is sterically enforced due to the cyclic nature of the backbone. Density functional theory calculations revealed that the small angle results in an increased s-character of the lone pair at the ylidic carbon atom and leads to a polarization of the C-P bond toward the carbon atom, thus decreasing the electron density at the phosphorus atom. The results demonstrate the tunability of the donor strength of YPhos ligands by modification of the ligand backbone beyond simple changes of the substitution pattern and are thus important for future ligand design, with a careful balance of many factors to be considered to achieve catalytic activity.

IPr# - highly hindered, broadly applicable N-heterocyclic carbenes

IPr (IPr = 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene) represents the most important NHC (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene) ligand throughout the field of homogeneous catalysis. Herein, we report the synthesis, catalytic activity, and full structural and electronic characterization of novel, sterically-bulky, easily-accessible NHC ligands based on the hash peralkylation concept, including IPr#, Np# and BIAN-IPr#. The new ligands have been commercialized in collaboration with Millipore Sigma: IPr#HCl, 915653; Np#HCl; 915912; BIAN-IPr#HCl, 916420, enabling broad access of the academic and industrial researchers to new ligands for reaction optimization and screening. In particular, the synthesis of IPr# hinges upon cost-effective, modular alkylation of aniline, an industrial chemical that is available in bulk. The generality of this approach in ligand design is demonstrated through facile synthesis of BIAN-IPr# and Np#, two ligands that differ in steric properties and N-wingtip arrangement. The broad activity in various cross-coupling reactions in an array of N–C, O–C, C–Cl, C–Br, C–S and C–H bond cross-couplings is demonstrated. The evaluation of steric, electron-donating and π-accepting properties as well as coordination chemistry to Au(i), Rh(i) and Pd(ii) is presented. Given the tremendous importance of NHC ligands in homogenous catalysis, we expect that this new class of NHCs will find rapid and widespread application.

Synthesis and catalytic activity of palladium complexes bearing N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) and 1,4,7-triaza-9-phosphatricyclo[5.3.2.1]tridecane (CAP) ligands

The synthesis and characterization of novel palladium complexes bearing N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) and 1,4,7-triaza-9-phosphatricyclo[5.3.2.1]tridecane (CAP) are reported. These organometallic complexes can be easily obtained using two different synthetic strategies that involve either the substitution of the pyridine ligand from trans-[Pd(NHC)(Py)Cl2] or by simple addition of the CAP ligand to dimeric species [Pd(NHC)Cl2]2. The mixed NHC/CAP complexes were tested as pre-catalysts in the Buchwald-Hartwig aryl amination coupling, showing good catalytic activity, especially in the case of cis-[Pd(IPr)(CAP)Cl2].

Integrated Suzuki Cross-Coupling/Reduction Cascade Reaction of meta-/para-Chloroacetophenones and Arylboronic Acids under Batch and Continuous Flow Conditions

Overcoming the incompatibility of a pair of conflicting catalysts via a flow methodology has great significance in the practical applications for multistep organic transformations. In this study, a multiple continuous-flow system is developed, which can boost the reactivity and selectivity in a sequential enantioselective cascade reaction. During this process, a periodic mesoporous organosilica-supported Pd/carbene species as a Suzuki cross-coupling catalyst is packed in the first column reactor, whereas another periodic mesoporous organosilica-supported Ru/diamine species as an asymmetric transfer hydrogenation catalyst is packed in the second column reactor. As we envisioned, the initially Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction of meta-/para-chloroacetophenones and aryl boronic acids followed by the subsequentially Ru-catalyzed reduction provides chiral biarylols with enhanced yields and enantioselectivities. Furthermore, the advantages of the easy handling and the simple procedure make this system an attractive application in a scale-up preparation of optically pure organic molecules under environmentally-friendly conditions.

Revealing the Structure Evolution of Heterogeneous Pd Catalyst in Suzuki Reaction via the Identical Location Transmission Electron Microscopy

The mechanism of palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs)-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions has been the subject of intense debate since the recognition of catalytic active sites involving a wide array of dynamic changed Pd species. Here, through the combination of the hot filtration experiment together with the recently developed identical location transmission electron microscopy (IL-TEM) method, the delicate structure evolution of highly dispersed Pd NPs supported on oxygen-functionalized carbon nanotubes (Pd/oCNTs) as well as the kinetics properties of derived dissolved species in liquid phase were systemically investigated in the Suzuki-Miyaura reaction. The result indicates that the leached Pd components caused by the strong adsorption of reactants might have a significant contribution to the coupling products, and the degree for different substrates follows the order of iodobenzene > phenylboronic acid > bromobenzene. Meanwhile, the typical three sequential behaviors of supported Pd NPs, including dissolution, deposition, and growth, along with the increase of the conversion throughout the reaction were spatiotemporally observed by tracking the evolution of individually identifiable NPs. The performed work not only provides direct evidence for the interaction between Pd NPs surface with reactants on atomic scale but also gives a valuable reference for fundamentally understanding the mechanism of the heterogeneous Pd-catalyzed Suzuki coupling process as well as rational design of next-generation catalysts with high efficiency and reusability for synthetic applications.

Suzuki-Miyaura Cross-Coupling of Esters by Selective O-C(O) Cleavage Mediated by Air- and Moisture-Stable [Pd(NHC)(μ-Cl)Cl]2 Precatalysts: Catalyst Evaluation and Mechanism

The cross-coupling of aryl esters has emerged as a powerful platform for the functionalization of otherwise inert acyl C-O bonds in chemical synthesis and catalysis. Herein, we report a combined experimental and computational study on the acyl Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling of aryl esters mediated by well-defined, air- and moisture-stable Pd(II)-NHC precatalysts [Pd(NHC)(μ-Cl)Cl]2. We present a comprehensive evaluation of [Pd(NHC)(μ-Cl)Cl]2 precatalysts and compare them with the present state-of-the-art [(Pd(NHC)allyl] precatalysts bearing allyl-type throw-away ligands. Most importantly, the study reveals [Pd(NHC)(μ-Cl)Cl]2 as the most reactive precatalysts discovered to date in this reactivity manifold. The unique synthetic utility of this unconventional O-C(O) cross-coupling is highlighted in the late-stage functionalization of pharmaceuticals and sequential chemoselective cross-coupling, providing access to valuable ketone products by a catalytic mechanism involving Pd insertion into the aryl ester bond. Furthermore, we present a comprehensive study of the catalytic cycle by DFT methods. Considering the clear advantages of [Pd(NHC)(μ-Cl)Cl]2 precatalysts on several levels, including facile one-pot synthesis, superior atom-economic profile to all other Pd(II)-NHC catalysts, and versatile reactivity, these should be considered as the 'first-choice' catalysts for all routine applications in ester O-C(O) bond activation.

A Bis (BICAAC) Palladium(II) Complex: Synthesis and Implementation as Catalyst in Heck-Mizoroki and Suzuki-Miyaura Cross Coupling Reactions

Carbenes are one of the most appealing, well-explored, and exciting ligands in modern chemistry due to their tunable stereoelectronic properties and a wide area of applications. A palladium complex (BICAAC)₂PdCl₂ with a recently discovered cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene having bicyclo[2.2.2] octane skeleton (BICAAC) was synthesized and characterized. The enhanced σ-donating and π-accepting ability of this carbene lend a hand to form a robust Pd-carbene bond, which allowed us to probe its reactivity as a precatalyst in Heck-Mizoroki and Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions with low catalyst loading in open-air conditions. The diverse range of substrates was explored for both the cross-coupling reactions. To get a better understanding of the catalytic reactions, several analytical techniques such as field-emission scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and powder X-ray diffraction were employed in a conclusive manner.

Conversion of Pd(I) off-cycle species into highly efficient cross-coupling catalysts

We report on the facile conversion of [Pd2(μ-Cl)(μ-η3-R-allyl)(NHC)2] complexes, which are commonly considered undesirable off-cycle species in cross-coupling reactions, into active [PdCl(μ-Cl)(NHC)]2 pre-catalysts. All reactions proceed under mild conditions (40 °C, 1-2 hours in acetone) using inexpensive HCl as both an oxidant and chloride source. DFT calculations were performed to explore the possible mechanism of this transformation, which appears to involve a combination of two different pathways. Moreover this study provides insights into factors favoring and hindering Pd(i) dimer formation undesirable in catalysis.

Nickel-Catalyzed Intramolecular 1,2-Aryl Migration of Mesoionic Carbenes (iMICs)

Intramolecular 1,2-Dipp migration of seven mesoionic carbenes (iMICAr ) 2 a-g (iMICAr =ArC{N(Dipp)}2 CHC; Ar=aryl; Dipp=2,6-iPr2 C6 H3 ) under nickel catalysis to give 1,3-imidazoles (IMDAr ) 3 a-g (IMDAr =ArC{N(Dipp)CHC(Dipp)N}) has been reported. The formation of 3 indicates the cleavage of an N-CDipp bond and the subsequent formation of a C-CDipp bond in 2, which is unprecedented in NHC chemistry. The use of 3 in accessing super-iMICs (5) (S-iMIC=ArC{N(Dipp)N(Me)C(Dipp)}C) has been shown with selenium (6), gold (7), and palladium (8) compounds. The quantification of the stereoelectronic properties reveals the superior σ-donor strength of 5 compared to that of classical NHCs. Remarkably, the percentage buried volume of 5 (%Vbur =45) is the largest known amongst thus far reported iMICs. Catalytic studies show a remarkable activity of 5, which is consistent with their auspicious stereoelectronic features.

Visible light-induced mono-bromination of arenes with BrCCl3

A highly efficient and regioselective bromination of electron-rich arenes and heteroarenes using commercially available BrCCl3 as a "Br" source has been developed. The reaction was performed in air under mild conditions with photocatalyst Ru(bpy)3Cl2·6H2O, avoiding the usage of strong acids and strong oxidants. Mono-brominated products were obtained with medium to excellent yields (up to 94%). This strategy has shown good compatibility and high para-selectivity, which will facilitate the complicated synthesis.

Aryl Amination Using Soluble Weak Base Enabled by a Water-Assisted Mechanism

The amination of aryl halides has become one of the most commonly practiced C-N bond-forming reactions in pharmaceutical and laboratory syntheses. The widespread use of strong or poorly soluble inorganic bases for amine activation nevertheless complicates the compatibility of this important reaction class with sensitive substrates as well as applications in flow and automated synthesis, to name a few. We report a palladium-catalyzed C-N coupling using Et₃N as a weak, soluble base, which allows a broad substrate scope that includes bromo- and chloro(hetero)arenes, primary anilines, secondary amines, and amide type nucleophiles together with tolerance for a range of base-sensitive functional groups. Mechanistic data have established a unique pathway for these reactions in which water serves multiple beneficial roles. In particular, ionization of a neutral catalytic intermediate via halide displacement by H₂O generates, after proton loss, a coordinatively unsaturated Pd-OH species that can bind amine substrate triggering intramolecular N-H heterolysis. This water-assisted pathway operates efficiently with even weak terminal bases, such as Et₃N. The use of a simple, commercially available ligand, PAd₃, is key to this water-assisted mechanism by promoting coordinative unsaturation in catalytic intermediates responsible for the heterolytic activation of strong element-hydrogen bonds, which enables broad compatibility of carbon-heteroatom cross-coupling reactions with sensitive substrates and functionality.

Photoaccelerated energy transfer catalysis of the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling through ligand regulation on Ir(iii)-Pd(ii) bimetallic complexes

Three bimetallic Ir(iii)-Pd(ii) complexes [Ir(ppy)2(bpm)PdCl2](PF6) (ppy = 2-phenylpyridine, 1), [Ir(dfppy)2(bpm)PdCl2](PF6) (dfppy = (4,6-difluorophenyl)pyridine, 2), and [Ir(pq)2(bpm)PdCl2](PF6) (pq = 2-phenylquinoline, 3) were synthesized by using 2,2'-bipyrimidine (bpm) as a bridging ligand. The influences of the cyclometalated ligand at the Ir(iii) center on the photophysical and electrochemical properties as well as photocatalytic activity for the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction under mild conditions were evaluated. The results revealed that complex 3 enables dramatically accelerating the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction under visible light irradiation at room temperature, due to the effective absorption of visible light and appropriate locus of the excited chromophore. Mechanism studies showed that the chromophore [Ir(pq)2(bpm)] fragment absorbs visible light to produce the triplet excited state centering on the bridging ligand which boosts the formation of electron rich Pd(ii) units and facilitates the oxidative addition step of the catalytic cycle. Simultaneously, the excited chromophore undergoes energy transfer efficiently to the Pd(ii) reaction site to form the excited Pd(ii) species, resulting in enhancement of Pd(ii) reduction steps of the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction and increasing the reactivity of the catalyst. This provides a new strategy for designing photocatalysts for coupling reaction through altering the cyclometalated ligand to modulate the photophysical properties and the cooperation between two metal units.

Differences in the Performance of Allyl Based Palladium Precatalysts for Suzuki-Miyaura Reactions

Palladium(II) precatalysts are used extensively to facilitate cross-coupling reactions because they are bench stable and give high activity. As a result, precatalysts such as Buchwald's palladacycles, Organ's PEPPSI species, Nolan's allyl-based complexes, and Yale's 1-tert-butylindenyl containing complexes, are all commercially available. Comparing the performance of the different classes of precatalysts is challenging because they are typically used under different conditions, in part because they are reduced to the active species via different pathways. However, within a particular class of precatalyst, it is easier to compare performance because they activate via similar pathways and are used under the same conditions. Here, we evaluate the activity of different allyl-based precatalysts, such as (η³-allyl)PdCl(L), (η³-crotyl)PdCl(L), (η³-cinnamyl)PdCl(L), and (η³-1-tert-butylindenyl)PdCl(L) in Suzuki-Miyaura reactions. Specifically, we evaluate precatalyst performance as the ancillary ligand (NHC or phosphine), reaction conditions, and substrates are varied. In some cases, we connect relative activity to both the mechanism of activation and the prevalence of the formation of inactive palladium(I) dimers. Additionally, we compare the performance of in situ generated precatalysts with commonly used palladium sources such as tris(dibenzylideneacetone)dipalladium(0) (Pd₂dba₃), bis(acetonitrile)dichloropalladium(II) (Pd(CH₃CN)₂Cl₂), and palladium acetate. Our results provide information about which precatalyst to use under different conditions.

Toward prediction of the precatalyst activation mechanism through the cross-coupling reactions: Reduction of Pd(II) to Pd(0) in precatalyst of the type Pd-PEPPSI

Pd-PEPPSI type complexes are widely used as precatalyst in a variety of organic reactions, including the Negishi, Kumada and Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions. The aim of this research is to determine potential proposed reaction pathways 1, 2, or 2' (See Schemes 1 and S1-S4) for Pd-PEPPSI precatalyst activation in the presence of ethylene glycol as a solvent also in the gas phase at Cam-B3LYP-D3 method nominated among eight DFT methods examined. There is also investigation into the impact of promoter bases (NaOEt, NaOⁱ Pr, NaO^t Bu) on precatalyst activation of Pd-PEPPSI. Eventually, the most favorable proposed reaction pathway and promoter base for reducing Pd(II) to Pd(0) are predicted computationally. Notably, our findings are consistent with the organ Pd-PEPPSI type complexes that offer increased catalytic activity and provide basic information in the presence of solvents designing the monoligated Pd(0)-solvent.

Ligand Steric Effects of α-Diimine Nickel(II) and Palladium(II) Complexes in the Suzuki-Miyaura Cross-Coupling Reaction

Nickel catalysts represent a low cost and environmentally friendly alternative to palladium-based catalytic systems for Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling (SMC) reactions. However, nickel catalysts have suffered from poor air, moisture, and thermal stabilities, especially at high catalyst loading, requiring controlled reaction conditions. In this report, we examine a family of mono- and dinuclear Ni(II) and Pd(II) complexes with a diverse and versatile α-diimine ligand environment for SMC reactions. To evaluate the ligand steric effects, including the bite angle in the reaction outcomes, the structural variation of the complexes was achieved by incorporating iminopyridine- and acenaphthene-based ligands. Moreover, the impact of substrate bulkiness was investigated by reacting various aryl bromides with phenylboronic acid, 2-naphthylboronic acid, and 9-phenanthracenylboronic acid. Yields were the best with the dinuclear complex, being nearly quantitative (93-99%), followed by the mononuclear complexes, giving yields of 78-98%. Consequently, α-diimine-based ligands have the potential to deliver Ni-based systems as sustainable catalysts in SMC.

Decarbonylative Suzuki-Miyaura Cross-Coupling of Aroyl Chlorides

Herein, we report a catalyst system for Pd-catalyzed decarbonylative Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling of aroyl chlorides with boronic acids to furnish biaryls. This strategy is suitable for a broad range of common aroyl chlorides and boronic acids. The synthetic utility is highlighted in the direct late-stage functionalization of pharmaceuticals and natural products capitalizing on the presence of carboxylic acid moiety. Extensive mechanistic and DFT studies provide key insight into the reaction mechanism and high decarbonylative cross-coupling selectivity.

The key role of R-NHC coupling (R = C, H, heteroatom) and M-NHC bond cleavage in the evolution of M/NHC complexes and formation of catalytically active species

Complexes of metals with N-heterocyclic carbene ligands (M/NHC) are typically considered the systems of choice in homogeneous catalysis due to their stable metal-ligand framework. However, it becomes obvious that even metal species with a strong M-NHC bond can undergo evolution in catalytic systems, and processes of M-NHC bond cleavage are common for different metals and NHC ligands. This review is focused on the main types of the M-NHC bond cleavage reactions and their impact on activity and stability of M/NHC catalytic systems. For the first time, we consider these processes in terms of NHC-connected and NHC-disconnected active species derived from M/NHC precatalysts and classify them as fundamentally different types of catalysts. Problems of rational catalyst design and sustainability issues are discussed in the context of the two different types of M/NHC catalysis mechanisms.

[Pd(NHC)(μ-Cl)Cl]2: Versatile and Highly Reactive Complexes for Cross-Coupling Reactions that Avoid Formation of Inactive Pd(I) Off-Cycle Products

The development of more reactive, general, easily accessible, and readily available Pd(II)–NHC precatalysts remains a key challenge in homogeneous catalysis. In this study, we establish air-stable NHC–Pd(II) chloro-dimers, [Pd(NHC)(μ-Cl)Cl]₂, as the most reactive Pd(II)–NHC catalysts developed to date. Most crucially, compared with [Pd(NHC)(allyl)Cl] complexes, replacement of the allyl throw-away ligand with chloride allows for a more facile activation step, while effectively preventing the formation of off-cycle [Pd₂(μ-allyl)(μ-Cl)(NHC)₂] products. The utility is demonstrated via broad compatibility with amide cross-coupling, Suzuki cross-coupling, and the direct, late-stage functionalization of pharmaceuticals. Computational studies provide key insight into the NHC–Pd(II) chloro-dimer activation pathway. A facile synthesis of NHC–Pd(II) chloro-dimers in one-pot from NHC salts is reported. Considering the tremendous utility of Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions and the overwhelming success of [Pd(NHC)(allyl)Cl] precatalysts, we believe that NHC–Pd(II) chloro-dimers, [Pd(NHC)(μ-Cl)Cl]₂, should be considered as go-to precatalysts of choice in cross-coupling processes.

Transition-metal mediated carbon-sulfur bond activation and transformations: an update

Carbon-sulfur bond cross-coupling has become more and more attractive as an alternative protocol to establish carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bonds. Diverse transformations through transition-metal-catalyzed C-S bond activation and cleavage have recently been developed. This review summarizes the advances in transition-metal-catalyzed cross-coupling via carbon-sulfur bond activation and cleavage since late 2012 as an update of the critical review on the same topic published in early 2013 (Chem. Soc. Rev., 2013, 42, 599-621), which is presented by the categories of organosulfur compounds, that is, thioesters, thioethers including heteroaryl, aryl, vinyl, alkyl, and alkynyl sulfides, ketene dithioacetals, sulfoxides including DMSO, sulfones, sulfonyl chlorides, sulfinates, thiocyanates, sulfonium salts, sulfonyl hydrazides, sulfonates, thiophene-based compounds, and C[double bond, length as m-dash]S functionality-bearing compounds such as thioureas, thioamides, and carbon disulfide, as well as the mechanistic insights. An overview of C-S bond cleavage reactions with stoichiometric transition-metal reagents is briefly given. Theoretical studies on the reactivity of carbon-sulfur bonds by DFT calculations are also discussed.
