Abstract
Escherichia coli plays a crucial role in various inflammatory diseases and infections that pose significant threats to both human health and the global environment. Specifically inhibiting the growth of pathogenic E. coli is of great and urgent concern. By modifying gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with both poly[2-(methacrylamido)glucopyranose] (pMAG) and poly[2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl trimethylammonium iodide] (pMETAI), a novel recyclable E. coli-specific-killing AuNP-polymer (ESKAP) nanocomposite is proposed in this study, which based on both the high affinity of glycopolymers toward E. coli pili and the merits of antibacterial quaternized polymers attached to gold nanoparticles. The properties of nanocomposites with different ratios of pMAG to pMETAI grafted onto AuNPs are studied. With a pMAG:pMETAI feed ratio of 1:3, the nanocomposite appeared to specifically adhere to E. coli and highly inhibit the bacterial cells. After addition of mannose, which possesses higher affinity for the lectin on bacterial pili and has a competitive advantage over pMAG for adhesion to pili, the nanocomposite was able to escape from dead E. coli cells, becoming available for repeat use. The recycled nanocomposite retained good antibacterial activity for at least three cycles. Thus, this novel ESKAP nanocomposite is a promising, highly effective, and readily recyclable antibacterial agent that specifically kills E. coli. This nanocomposite has potential applications in biological sensing, biomedical diagnostics, biomedical imaging, drug delivery, and therapeutics.

Abstract
A highly porous cryogel is prepared and subsequently functionalized with an atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initiator at the surface. Two new glycomonomers are introduced, which possess deprotected mannose as well as glucose moieties. These are copolymerized with N-isopropylacrylamide (NiPAm) from the cryogel surface, providing a highly hydrophilic porous material, which is characterized by SEM, FT-IR spectroscopy, and NMR spectroscopy. This functionalized support can be applied for affinity chromatography of whole cells owing to the high pore space and diameter. Such an application is exemplified by investigating the ability to capture Escherichia coli bacteria, revealing selective binding interactions of the bacteria with the mannose glycopolymer-functionalized cryogel surface. Thus, the presented glycopolymer-cryogel represents a promising material for affinity chromatography or enrichment of cells.

Abstract
Glycopolymers with carbohydrate side chains are currently being applied in many fields, with much potential for disease treatment. The shape of glycopolymer-bearing nanoparticles has obvious effects on the nanoparticle-cell interaction and is therefore important for the applications of glycopolymers in biological systems. Here a synthetic approach to prepare non-spherical glycopolymer-coated iron oxide nanoparticles is provided, by combing the convenience of inorganic shape control, catecholic chemistry, and thiol-ene reaction.

Abstract
To explore the effect of polymer structure on their self-assembled aggregates and their unique characteristics, this study was devoted to developing a series of amphiphilic block and random phenylboronic acid-based glycopolymers by RAFT polymerization. The amphiphilic glycopolymers were successfully self-assembled into spherically shaped nanoparticles with narrow size distribution in aqueous solution. For block and random copolymers with similar monomer compositions, block copolymer nanoparticles exhibited a more regular transmittance change with the increasing glucose level, while a more evident variation of size and quicker decreasing tendency in I/I0 behavior in different glucose media were observed for random copolymer nanoparticles. Cell viability of all the polymer nanoparticles investigated by MTT assay was higher than 80%, indicating that both block and random copolymers had good cytocompatibility. Insulin could be encapsulated into both nanoparticles, and insulin release rate for random glycopolymer was slightly quicker than that for the block ones. We speculate that different chain conformations between block and random glycopolymers play an important role in self-assembled nanoaggregates and underlying glucose-sensitive behavior.

Abstract
An effective strategy has been documented to combine both carbohydrate and amino acid biomolecules in a single synthetic polymeric system via a reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization technique. The resultant unique block copolymer was engineered to form uniform micelles with the desired projection of either selective or both amino acid/sugar residues on the outer surface with multivalency, providing pH-based stimuli-responsiveness and/or lectin recognition. The self-assembly process was studied in detail by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and UV-visible spectroscopy. The enhanced lectin binding behavior was observed for glyconanoparticles with both amino acid/sugar entities on the shell as compared to the only glycopolymer nanoparticle because of the higher steric hindrance factor in the case of only the glycopolymer nanoparticle. Fluorophore conjugation by postpolymerization functionalization was further exploited by fluorescence spectroscopy for evidencing the lectin recognition process.

Abstract
Copolymers of 2-(methacrylamido)glucopyranose (MAG) and methacrylic acid (MAA) are synthesized by RAFT polymerization and then used as templates to prepare glycopolymer-functionalized Ag nanoclusters (Gly-Ag NCs) through microwave irradiation. Polymers and the resulting nanoclusters are characterized by NMR, GPC, UV-Vis, SEM, TEM, AAS and fluorescence spectroscopy. The bio-activity of the fluorescent Gly-Ag NCs are further examined using GLUT-1 over-expressing cancer cells K562. Gly-Ag NCs show efficient binding ability toward K562 cells and inhibit the cell viability in a dose dependent manner (IC50 = 0.65 μg mL(-1)), indicating their potential biological applications for both cancer imaging and targeted cancer therapy.

Abstract
A redox-responsive polycationic system was synthesized via copolymerization of N,N-diethylacrylamide (DEAAm) and 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA). N,N'-bis(4-chlorobutanoyl)cystamine was used as disulfide-containing cross-linker to form networks by the quaternization of tertiary amine groups. The insoluble cationic hydrogels become soluble by reduction of disulfide to mercaptanes by use of dithiothreitol (DTT), tris(2-carboxyethyl)phosphine (TCEP) or cysteamine, respectively. The soluble polymeric system can be cross-linked again by using oxygen or hydrogen peroxide under basic conditions. The redox-responsive polymer networks can be used for molecular inclusion and controlled release. As an example, phenolphthalein, methylene blue and reactive orange 16 were included into the network. After treatment with DTT a release of the dye could be recognized. Physical properties of the cross-linked materials, e.g., glass transition temperature (T g), swelling behavior and cloud points (T c) were investigated. Redox-responsive behavior was further analyzed by rheological measurements.

Abstract
Synthetic glycopolymers are important natural oligosaccharides mimics for many biological applications. To develop glycopolymeric drugs and therapeutic agents, factors that control the receptor-ligand interaction need to be investigated. A library of well-defined glycopolymers has been prepared by the combination of copper mediated living radical polymerization and CuAAC click reaction via post-functionalization of alkyne-containing precursor polymers with different sugar azides. Employing Concanavalin A as the model receptor, we explored the influence of the nature and densities of different sugars residues (mannose, galactose, and glucose) on the stoichiometry of the cluster, the rate of the cluster formation, the inhibitory potency of the glycopolymers, and the stability of the turbidity through quantitative precipitation assays, turbidimetry assays, inhibitory potency assays, and reversal aggregation assays. The diversities of binding properties contributed by different clustering parameters will make it possible to define the structures of the multivalent ligands and densities of binding epitopes tailor-made for specific functions in the lectin-ligand interaction. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract
Herein, we demonstrate the reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) synthesis of an adamantane-conjugated glycopolymer, poly(2-methacrylamido-2-deoxy glucopyranose) (Ad-pMAG), as a hydrophilic coating to promote colloidal stability of click cluster-pDNA complexes in biological media. The Ad-pMAG is assembled via noncovalent interactions through inclusion complex formation between adamantane (Ad) and the β-cyclodextrin (βCD) core of the click cluster/pDNA and then further assembled with plasmid DNA to form polyplexes. Ad-pMAG incorporation was favorable over Ad-poly(ethylene glycol) (Ad-PEG) due to the enhanced colloidal stability of the click cluster/pDNA polyplex under physiological salt conditions at high N/P ratios. Interestingly, the uptake and reporter gene expression with polyplexes coated with the Ad-pMAG was much lower in HeLa cells than that observed with two glioma cell lines (U87 and U251 cells) in vitro, possibly indicating some delivery specificity.

Abstract
This paper provides a third update to the review of reversible deactivation radical polymerization (RDRP) achieved with thiocarbonylthio compounds (ZC(=S)SR) by a mechanism of reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) that was published in June 2005 (Aust. J. Chem. 2005, 58, 379). The first update was published in November 2006 (Aust. J. Chem. 2006, 59, 669) and the second in December 2009 (Aust. J. Chem. 2009, 62, 1402). This review cites over 700 publications that appeared during the period mid 2009 to early 2012 covering various aspects of RAFT polymerization which include reagent synthesis and properties, kinetics and mechanism of polymerization, novel polymer syntheses, and a diverse range of applications. This period has witnessed further significant developments, particularly in the areas of novel RAFT agents, techniques for end-group transformation, the production of micro/nanoparticles and modified surfaces, and biopolymer conjugates both for therapeutic and diagnostic applications.
