Selective Luminescence Chemosensing of Potassium Ions Based on a Novel Platinum(II) Alkynylcalix[4]crown-5 Complex

Back-to-back dinuclear platinum terpyridyl complexes: synthesis and photophysical studies

Two back-to-back terpyridine ligands using fluorenyl as bridging group (1-L and 2-L) and their corresponding dinuclear platinum(II) complexes (1 and 2) were synthesized and characterized. Their electronic absorption, photoluminescence, and the triplet transient difference absorption were systematically investigated. Both ligands possess intense (1)pi,pi* absorption in the UV region, and they exhibit structured (1)pi,pi* fluorescence around 400 nm. With addition of p-toluenesulfonic acid to the ligands, both the absorption band and the emission band are red-shifted because of the increased electron-withdrawing ability of the protonated terpyridines and possible mixture of some intraligand charge transfer (ILCT) character. For complexes 1 and 2, they both exhibit broad and strong absorption between 400 and 500 nm, which is assigned as the (1)pi,pi*/(1)ILCT/(1)MLCT (metal-to-ligand charge transfer) transition. The involvement of (1)ILCT in the lowest excited state is evident by the acid titration experiment of the ligands. At room temperature, the complexes exhibit dual emission that admixes fluorescence and phosphorescence from the (1,3)pi,pi*/(1,3)ILCT/(1,3)MLCT states. The assignment of the emitting states is based on the distinct emission lifetimes, different sensitivity to oxygen quenching, and different temperature dependency. Both complexes exhibit emission at 77 K, which is assigned as the mixture of (3)pi,pi*/(3)MLCT. 1 and 2 also exhibit two triplet excited-state absorption bands in the visible to the NIR region, which are tentatively attributed to the (3)pi,pi* and (3)MLCT/(3)ILCT state. In addition, the connection pattern between the fluorenyl component and the terpyridyl components influences the excited-state characteristics of both the ligands and the complexes. Ligand 1-L and its corresponding platinum complex 1 that have the triplet bond connection between the fluorenyl and terpyridyl components exhibit a red-shifted low-energy absorption band, an emission band, and a transient absorption band compared to ligand 2-L and complex 2 that have the fluorenyl directly attached to terpyridyl components. These differences could be rationalized by the enhanced conjugation between the fluorenyl and terpyridyl components in 1-L and 1 because of the better coplanarity induced by the triple bond.

Luminescent metallogels of platinum(II) terpyridyl complexes: interplay of metal...metal, pi-pi and hydrophobic-hydrophobic interactions on gel formation

A series of platinum(II) terpyridyl complexes has been demonstrated to show gelation properties driven by Pt...Pt and pi-pi interactions in addition to hydrophobic-hydrophobic interactions; counter-anions have been found to affect strongly the colour of the metallogel.

Calix[4]bis(thiacrown): Assembly of an Endocyclic Disilver(I) Complex and Exocyclic 3D Copper(I) Coordination Polymers

Calix[4]bis(thiacrown-5) (L) with 1,3-alternating conformation was employed as a strong dinucleating ligand for the soft metal ions AgI and CuI. The reaction of L with AgPF6 afforded a discrete endo-coordinated disilver(I) complex 1, [Ag2L](PF6)2. In contrast, mixed products (2a + 2b) consisting of 3D networks were obtained from the reaction of L and CuI; 2b linked with a Cu4I4 cubane unit was shown to generate photoluminescence, while 2a linked with a Cu2I2 rhomboid unit does not.

First Example of the Solid-State Thermal Cyclometalation of Ligated Benzophenone Imine Giving Novel Luminescent Platinum(II) Species

The (benzophenone imine)platinum(II) compounds trans-[PtCl2(Ph2C=NH)(RR'SO)] [R, R'=Me, Me (2); n-Pr, n-Pr (3); (CH2)4 (4); Me, Ph (5); Me, p-MeC6H4 (6)] were prepared by the reaction of Ph2C=NH with K[PtCl3(RR'SO)], obtained in situ from K2[PtCl4] and the corresponding sulfoxide, giving 2-6 as well as cis-[PtCl2(Ph2C=NH)2] (1) as a minor product. The complexes were characterized by 1H, 13C, and 195Pt NMR and IR spectroscopy, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, and C, H, and N elemental analysis. The X-ray crystallography of 1 enables confirmation of the cis configuration of the complex, while in 2 and 4.1/2CHCl3, the imine and sulfoxide ligands are mutually trans. The solid-state structure of 4.1/2CHCl3 consists of two dimeric Pt moieties representing a rather weak Pt...Pt interaction. The dimeric architecture of 4.1/2CHCl3 is enhanced by the hydrogen bonding between imine H atoms and O atoms. The orthometalation of 1 and 2-6 proceeds both in the solid phase and in a toluene suspension, leading to the formation of [PtCl{Ph(C6H4)C=NH}(Ph2C=NH)] (7) and [PtCl{Ph(C6H4)C=NH}(RR'SO)] (8-12), respectively, isolated in nearly quantitative yields. Complexes 8-12 are emissive at room temperature both in solution (lambdaemmax approximately 535 nm) and in the solid state (lambdaemmax 560-610 nm), with excited-state lifetimes of ca. 300-600 ns, representing a new family of PtII-based luminescent complexes. Compounds 8 and 10 have been characterized by X-ray analysis, confirming the square-planar coordination geometry of the metal center with the almost planar platinacycles. In 8, the asymmetric unit contains two independent Pt molecules, while in 10, it includes four Pt molecules linked by the intermolecular hydrogen-bonding network between the NH group and Cl atoms.

Photophysical and anion sensing properties of platinum(ii) terpyridyl complexes with phenolic ethynyl ligands

A series of platinum(II) terpyridyl complexes with phenolic ethynyl ligands have been synthesized and characterized. Their photophysical and sensing properties towards anions such as fluoride, acetate and dihydrogenphosphate have been investigated. These complexes show a colorimetric response and fluorescence quenching in the presence of anions including fluoride, acetate and dihydrogenphosphate, and selective sensing towards fluoride in some cases. The sensing mechanism has been investigated by spectrophotometric and 1H NMR titration.

The first example of a Pt⋯Pt interaction in platinum(ii) complexes bearing bulky tri-tert-butyl-2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine pendants via conformational control of the calix[4]arene moiety

An unprecedented short Pt...Pt contact between sterically bulky Pt((t)Bu(3)trpy) alkynyl moieties has been observed in the X-ray crystal structure of a dinuclear platinum(ii) complex bridged by a diethynylcalix[4]arene derivative; the complex in its crystalline state showed a red shift in the emission maxima at 298 K and 77 K relative to its powder form, which has been attributed to the presence of a metal-metal interaction in the crystal lattice.
