Abstract
The effect of in ovo feeding (IOF) in ameliorating the adverse effects of feed deprivation (FD) was studied in egg type chickens (White leghorn). The experimental design was a 3 × 3 factorial design with three treatments (in ovo, sham and un-injected control) and three types of feeding (immediate fed or fasted for 24 h and 36 h) as factors. Response criteria were embryonic weight, digestive organ development, growth performance, intestinal and villi morphology. Embryonic weight at 20 d (% of pre incubated egg) in IOF group was significantly higher compared to un-injected control group. IOF chicks had higher body weight (BW), proventriculus weight, duodenal villi length (VL) and villi width (VW) at 24 and 36 h post hatch (PH) than the sham control and un-injected control chicks. Immediately fed and 24 h FD chicks had significantly higher BW than 36 h FD chicks, while organ weight was higher in immediately fed chicks compared to FD chicks. The IOF and 24 h FD chicks had higher digestive organ weight, BW and VL than the un-injected and immediately fed chicks. IOF and 36 h FD chicks had comparable performances with un-injected control and immediately fed chicks. It is concluded that in ovo supplemented chicks can withstand early post-hatch feed deprivation and had improved PH performance.

Effect of egg storage duration and brooding temperatures on chick growth, intestine morphology and nutrient transporters. Animal 2017; 11:1791-1797. Abstract
The effects of egg storage duration (ESD) and brooding temperature (BT) on BW, intestine development and nutrient transporters of broiler chicks were investigated. A total of 396 chicks obtained from eggs stored at 18°C for 3 days (ESD3-18°C) or at 14°C for 14 days (ESD14-14°C) before incubation were exposed to three BTs. Temperatures were initially set at 32°C, 34°C and 30°C for control (BT-Cont), high (BT-High) and low (BT-Low) BTs, respectively. Brooding temperatures were decreased by 2°C each at days 2, 7, 14 and 21. Body weight was measured at the day of hatch, 2, 7, 14, 21, 28 and 42. Cloacal temperatures of broilers were recorded from 1 to 14 days. Intestinal morphology and gene expression levels of H+-dependent peptide transporter (PepT1) and Na-dependent glucose (SGLT1) were evaluated on the day of hatch and 14. Cloacal temperatures of chicks were affected by BTs from days 1 to 8, being the lowest for BT-Low chicks. BT-High resulted in the heaviest BWs at 7 days, especially for ESD14-14°C chicks. This result was consistent with longer villus and larger villus area of ESD14-14°C chicks at BT-High conditions. From 14 days to slaughter age, BT had no effect on broiler weight. ESD3-18°C chicks were heavier than ESD14-14°C chicks up to 28 days. The PepT1 and SGLT1 expression levels were significantly higher in ESD3-18°C chicks than ESD14-14°C on the day of hatch. There was significant egg storage by BT interaction for PepT1 and SGLT1 transporters at day 14. ESD14-14°C chicks had significantly higher expression of PepT1 and SGLT1 at BT-Low than those at BT-Cont. ESD14-14°C chicks upregulated PepT1 gene expression 1.15 and 1.57-fold at BT-High and BT-Low, respectively, compared with BT-Cont, whereas PepT1 expression was downregulated 0.67 and 0.62-fold in ESD3-18°C chicks at BT-High and BT-Low. These results indicated that pre-incubation egg storage conditions and BTs affected intestine morphology and PepT1 and SGLT1 nutrient transporters expression in broiler chicks.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine the effects of first exogenous nutrients on the mRNA levels of muscle atrophy F-box (atrogin-1/MAFbx) and glucose transporters (GLUTs) in the skeletal muscles of newly hatched chicks with no feed experience. In experiment 1, newly hatched chicks had free access to feed or were fasted for the first 24h. The chicks having free access to feed for the first 24h increased their body weight and had decreased atrogin-1/MAFbx mRNA levels in their sartorius and pectoralis major muscles compared with the fasted chicks. In experiment 2, newly hatched chicks received a single feed via intubation into the crop. Three hours after intubation, levels of atrogin-1/MAFbx mRNA in the sartorius muscle were decreased whereas the plasma insulin concentration and phosphorylated AKT levels in the sartorius muscle were increased. In addition, the mRNA levels of GLUT1 and GLUT8 were increased in the sartorius muscle after the intubation. However, in the pectoralis major muscle, AKT phosphorylation and levels of atrogin-1/MAFbx, GLUT1 and GLUT8 mRNA were not affected 3h after intubation. The first exogenous nutrients increased the level of phosphorylated AKT in the sartorius muscle of newly hatched chicks, possibly because of the decrease in atrogin-1/MAFbx mRNA levels. Furthermore, the sartorius muscle in newly hatched chicks appeared to be more susceptible to the first feed compared with the pectoralis major muscle.

Abstract
An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of a periodically low eggshell temperature exposure during incubation and dietary supplementation of arginine on performance, ascites incidence, and cold tolerance acquisition in broilers. A total of 2,400 hatching eggs were randomly assigned to 2 treatment groups (16 replicates of 75 eggs per treatment). The eggs were incubated at a constant eggshell temperature (EST) of 37.8ºC throughout the incubation period (CON) or were periodically exposed to 15°C for one hour on days 11, 13, 15, and 17 of incubation and the EST was measured (periodical low EST; PLE). After hatching, 240 one-day-old male broiler chicks from both treatment groups were reared for 42 d with or without dietary arginine supplementation in a completely randomized design with a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement. In order to induce ascites, all chicks were exposed to a 15°C room temperature from 14 d onwards. Results showed that second grade chicks and yolk sac weight were decreased, and final body weight was increased in the PLE group. Ascites mortality rate was decreased only in the PLE group and dietary arginine supplementation had no apparent effect. In the PLE group, the packed cell volume (PCV) percentage and red blood cell (RBC) count were decreased. In conclusion, the results showed that the PLE treatment during incubation was associated with improved hatchability, chick quality, and productive performance of broilers and decreased ascites incidence during post hatch cold exposure. Dietary arginine supplementation had no beneficial effects in cold exposed broilers.

Abstract
Little is known about applying various eggshell temperatures (EST) during the last week of incubation. In particular, the effect of an EST below 37.8°C during the last week of incubation is poorly investigated. Therefore, we investigated effects of EST of 35.6, 36.7, 37.8, or 38.9°C applied from d of incubation (E) 15, E17, or E19 on first week broiler development and performance. A total of 2,850 first grade eggs of a 43 wk old Ross 308 broiler breeder flock were incubated at an EST of 37.8°C until E15. From E15, E17, or E19 onward, eggs were incubated at an EST of 35.6, 36.7, 37.8, or 38.9°C. Chick quality was determined at placement in the broiler house and organ development was measured at d 7. BW was determined at placement, d4, and d7. Feed intake (FI) was measured at d4 and d7 and G:F was calculated between placement and d4, and between d4 and d7. Chick quality at placement was higher at an EST of 35.6°C compared to all other EST treatments, expressed by a longer chick length and highest prevalence of closed navels. BW d 7 was higher at an EST of 36.7°C compared to all other EST treatments, which was not caused by a higher FI during the first week. A higher G:F between d 0 and d 7 was found at an EST of 36.7°C compared to 35.6 and 38.9°C. At d 7, a higher relative heart weight was found at an EST of 35.6 compared to 38.9°C. This study indicates that an EST of 38.9°C applied from E15 onward negatively affected chick quality, organ development, and G:F until d 7 compared to 37.8°C. Moreover, an EST of 36.7°C had a clear positive effect on chick quality, organ development, G:F, and growth performance until d 7. An EST of 35.6°C resulted in equal or higher chick quality and organ weights compared to 36.7°C, but this was not reflected in performance parameters.

Abstract
As the current poultry production system stands, there is a period of time when newly hatched chicks are prevented from access to feed for approximately 48-72 h. Research has indicated that this delay in feeding may result in decreased growth performance when compared to chicks that are fed immediately post-hatch. To remedy this issue, in ovo methodology may be applied in order to supply the embryo with additional nutrients prior to hatching and those nutrients will continue to be utilized by the chick post-hatch during the fasting period. Furthermore, in ovo injection of various biologics have been researched based on the ability of not only supplying the chick embryo with additional nutrients that would promote improved growth but also compounds that may benefit the future health of the chicken host. Such compounds include various immunostimulants, live beneficial bacteria, prebiotics, and synbiotics. However, it is important to determine the site and age of the in ovo injection for the most productive effects. The primary focus of the current review is to address these two issues [the most effective site(s) and age(s) of in ovo injection] as well as provide the framework for the development of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of the chick embryo. Additionally, recent research suggests the colonization of the microbiota in the developing chick may occur during the late stages of embryogenesis. Therefore, we will also discuss the potentials of the in ovo injection method in establishing a healthy and diverse community of microorganisms to colonize the developing GIT that will provide both protection from pathogen invasion and improvement in growth performance to developing chicks.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of egg weight on the composition of the egg, the growth of the embryo, and the expression of amino acid transporter genes in the yolk sac membranes and small intestines of the domestic pigeon (Columba livia). A total of 240 fertilized eggs were collected and divided into two groups based on the weight of the eggs, light (LE) and heavy (HE). The composition of 20 eggs from each group was measured, and the remaining eggs were weighed and placed in an incubator. On embryonic days (E) 9, 11, 13, and 15 and day of hatch (DOH), 15 embryos/hatchlings from each group were measured for embryonic growth, and samples were collected. The HE had heavier yolk and albumen weights than the LE (P < 0.01). Compared with the LE, the HE had heavier yolk-free embryonic body and yolk sac weights from E13 to DOH (P < 0.05). Additionally, the HE had larger yolk sac membrane weights from E13 to E15 (P < 0.05) and had more residual yolk sac content on DOH than those of the LE (P < 0.01). The yolk absorption was greater for the HE than for the LE from E11 to E13 (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the abundance of CAT2 and PepT1 mRNA in the yolk sac membranes was greater in the HE than in the LE on E13 (P < 0.05). Compared with the LE, the gene expression of EAAT2 in the intestine on E13 was greater in the HE, whereas the expression of EAAT3 was lower in the HE (P < 0.05). Taken together, our results suggest that egg weight influenced the composition of the eggs, embryonic development, and expression of amino acid transporter genes in the yolk sac membranes and small intestines of pigeon embryos.

Abstract
In recent years, researchers have given emphasis on the differences in physiological parameters between early and late hatched chicks within a hatch window. Considering the importance of intestine development in newly hatched chicks, however, changes in gene expression of nutrient transporters in the jejunum of early hatched chicks within a hatch window have not been studied yet. This study was conducted to determine the effects of egg storage duration before incubation and hatch window on intestinal development and expression of PepT1 (H+-dependent peptide transporter) and SGLT1 (sodium-glucose co-transporter) genes in the jejunum of early hatched broiler chicks within a 30 h of hatch window. A total of 1218 eggs obtained from 38-week-old Ross 308 broiler breeder flocks were stored for 3 (ES3) or 14 days (ES14) and incubated at the same conditions. Eggs were checked between 475 and 480 h of incubation and 40 chicks from each egg storage duration were weighed; chick length and rectal temperature were measured. The chicks were sampled to evaluate morphological parameters and PepT1 and SGLT1 expression. The remaining chicks that hatched between 475 and 480 h were placed back in the incubator and the same measurements were conducted with those chicks at the end of hatch window at 510 h of incubation. Chick length, chick dry matter content, rectal temperature and weight of small intestine segments increased, whereas chick weight decreased during the hatch window. The increase in the jejunum length and villus width and area during the hatch window were higher for ES3 than ES14 chicks. PepT1 expression was higher for ES3 chicks compared with ES14. There was a 10.2 and 17.6-fold increase in PepT1 and SGLT1 expression of ES3 chicks at the end of hatch window, whereas it was only 2.3 and 3.3-fold, respectively, for ES14 chicks. These results suggested that egg storage duration affected development of early hatched chicks during 30 h of hatch window. It can be concluded that the ES14 chicks would be less efficiently adapted to absorption process for carbohydrates and protein than those from ES3 at the end of the hatch window.

Abstract
Water is one of the most essential nutrients for the maintenance of chicks' function, and delayed access to feed and water post hatch has been reported to dehydrate chicks. Aqua agar (AA) was formulated to contain more than 95% water and an experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of AA as water replacement for posthatch chicks during transportation. During the simulated transport, chicks were held for 24 h with (AA group) or without (NO-AA group) aqua agar in chick boxes. During the holding period, chicks in the AA group lost less body weight, compared with the NO-AA group. However, the weight of residual yolk tended to be lower in the AA-treated birds. There were no significant differences in the weight of gizzard, proventriculus, and liver, nor in the weights and lengths of the duodenum, jejunum and ileum. A higher body weight was also observed in the AA group at 7 days of age. At 21 days of age, weight gain and feed intake were higher (P < 0.05) in the AA group, when compared to that of the NO-AA group. No significant differences were observed in the feed conversion rate (FCR) between the two groups. In conclusion, the data suggests that the use of AA as a water replacement could reduce the negative impact of water deficiency in posthatch period during transportation, resulting in greatly improved growth performance of young broilers at 21 days of age.

Abstract
While there are many accepted "facts" within the field of poultry science that are in truth still open for discussion, there is little debate with respect to the tremendous genetic progress that has been made with commercial broilers and turkeys (Havenstein et al., 2003, 2007). When one considers the changes in carcass development in poultry meat strains, these genetic "improvements" have not always been accompanied by correlated changes in other physiological systems and this can predispose some birds to developmental anomalies (i.e. ascites; Pavlidis et al., 2007; Wideman et al., 2013). Over the last decade, there has been increased interest in intestinal growth/health as poultry nutritionists have attempted to adopt new approaches to deal with the broader changes in the overall nutrition landscape. This landscape includes not only the aforementioned genetic changes but also a raft of governmental policies that have focused attention on the environment (phosphorus and nitrogen excretion), consumer pressure on the use of antibiotics, and renewable biofuels with its consequent effects on ingredient costs. Intestinal morphology has become a common research tool for assessing nutritional effects on the intestine but it is only one metric among many that can be used and histological results can often be interpreted in a variety of ways. This study will address the broader body of research on intestinal growth and development in commercial poultry and will attempt to integrate the topics of the intestinal: microbial interface and the role of the intestine as an immune tissue under the broad umbrella of intestinal physiology.

Abstract
The objective of the present study was to examine the changes in yolk and yolk sac fatty acid composition and also to investigate egg content, yolk absorption, embryo development during incubation, and chick quality at hatch in eggs from 36- and 52-wk-old broiler breeders. The fatty acid profiles of the yolk, the yolk sac of embryos, and the residual yolk sac of chicks were analyzed before incubation, on d 18, and at hatch, respectively. Yolk sac weight, and embryo weight and length were measured on d 18, and chick weight and length were measured at hatch. Egg weight, yolk and albumen weight, yolk percentage, and yolk:albumen ratio increased as breeder age increased, but the albumen percentage decreased. Yolk absorption in absolute value (g) was higher in embryos from the old flock on d 18 and at hatch. Relative yolk absorption was similar between age groups on d 18, whereas it was higher in the young flock at hatch. Breeder age affected the yolk sac weight and was higher in the old flock during incubation. Embryo or chick weight and length, and yolk-free BW were affected by breeder age during incubation. These parameters were higher in the old flock with a difference of 3.7 g, 0.8 cm, and 2.6 g, respectively, on d 18 and 7.4 g, 1.4 cm, and 6.3 g, respectively, at hatch compared with the young flock. The effect of breeder age on fatty acid composition differed significantly by sampling day. Palmitic, stearic, oleic, and linoleic acids were major fatty acids in the fresh yolk, ranging from 13.02 to 29.24%. These were followed by palmitoleic and arachidonic acids ranging from 1.24 to 7.04%, with the remaining fatty acids below 1%. Higher concentrations of myristic, palmitoleic, and oleic acids and lower concentrations of heptadeconoic, stearic, linoleic, and arachidonic acids were found in the residual yolk sac of the young flock than the old flock. The results showed preferentially selective absorption of some fatty acids by the embryo during incubation.

Abstract
The aim of the current study was to determine the effects of different eggshell temperatures (EST) during 10 to 18 d of incubation on embryonic development, hatchability, chick quality, first-week broiler performance. The EST were maintained within the temperature ranges of 33.3 to 36.7, 37.8 to 38.2, and 38.9 to 40.0°C for the low, control, and high EST treatments, respectively. From d 15 to 18, embryo weight and relative embryo weight were found to be similar in the low and high EST groups. Salable chicks and hatchability of total eggs was found to be higher in the control EST group. Between d 10 and 17 of incubation, embryonic mortality in low, control, and high EST groups was determined to be 1.6, 0.8, and 2.0%, respectively. From d 18 to hatch, embryonic mortality and rate of dead and cull chicks were found to be significantly different. Hatching in high EST group was completed 26 h early, although hatching in low EST group was completed 10 h later than the control EST group. On the of hatching day, chick weight and length were found to be 39.5, 41.0, and 42.5 g, and 18.5, 21.4, and 19.1 cm in low, control, and high EST groups, respectively. The highest residual yolk sac weight and relative residual yolk sac weight were observed in high EST group as 7.7 g and 18.7%. Yolk-free chick weight and relative yolk-free chick weight were highest in the control EST group. At 1 wk of age, the BW in low, control, and high EST groups were determined as 131.1, 140.0, and 140.8 g, respectively. No significant difference was found for feed intake and feed conversion among treatments for wk 1. The mortality during the first week did not differ among groups; however, a higher mortality rate was observed numerically in the high EST group. In conclusion, embryo development, incubation parameters, chick quality, and the first week performance are affected by small changes in the EST.

Abstract
Alterations in nutrient intake in the avian neonatal posthatch period can impact development, performance, and metabolism in adulthood. Very little is known about how mineral levels during the post-hatch period affect or “program” gene expression patterns later in life. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of post-hatch (0 to 96 h) dietary mineral supplementation on performance, tissue mineral content, and intestinal gene expression profiles in 21-day-old broiler chicks. One-day-old chicks were randomly assigned to one of two treatment groups consisting of N (organic Zn, Cu, and Mn provided at 100 % of recommendations (National Research Council 1994)) and/or L (organic Zn, Cu, and Mn provided at 20 % of recommendations (National Research Council 1994)) diets fed in two intervals (days 1–4, days 5–21) as follows: (1)N–Lor (2)L–L. Performance parameters did not differ between treatments except that body weight gain was greater (P < 0.05) in L–L birds than N–L birds over the experimental period. Bone mineral content was similar for both treatments at day 21. Intestinal gene expression profiling was examined using the Affymetrix GeneChip Chicken genome array. Ingenuity pathway analysis revealed differences in gene expression profiles between N and L treatments at day 5. At day 21, profiles were unique between N–L and L–L, suggesting that the diet fed until day 4 had an impact on gene expression patterns at day 21 even when birds were fed the same diets day 5–day 21. In this study, we demonstrated that diets fed for the 96 h post-hatch had long-term effects on gene expression, providing unique information as to why post-hatch diets are so important for the longterm bird health and productivity.

Abstract
In ovo supplementation of poultry embryos was first reported several decades ago, but it is only recently that concerted research has been directed at developing the technology for this process to be routinely used by the poultry industry. Although the technology of in ovo feeding was patented more than 10 years ago, it has not been widely adopted by the poultry industry. This review examines the early development of the enteric system of the poultry embryo; defines and distinguishes between in ovo feeding and in ovo nutrient administration; highlights the importance of early feeding of the chick; and discusses the development of in ovo feeding technology and its effects on hatchability, growth, gut health and immune response of chicks. The range of possible nutrients that can be administered is also explored. The limitations associated with embryo development and nutrient metabolism are highlighted, leading to the prediction of the future role of in ovo feeding in the poultry industry.

Abstract
A posthatch fasting period of 24 to 72 h is a common and inevitable practice in commercial poultry production. This delay in start of feed intake has been reported to negatively affect yolk utilization, gastrointestinal development, slaughter weight, breast meat yield, performance, and to also depress immunological development, making the birds more susceptible to infection from pathogens such as Salmonella. Furthermore, public concerns regarding the considerable human rates of illness reported and the emergence of antibiotic-resistant strains of Salmonella have doubled the challenge on the poultry industry to find alternative means of Salmonella control. In the present study, we evaluated the effects of a combination of early feeding with probiotic supplementation on morphological development of mucosa, control of Salmonella, and overall performance in broiler chickens. We used a blend of a commercially available perinatal supplement, EarlyBird (EB; Pacific Vet Group USA Inc., Fayetteville, AR), and a successful probiotic supplement, FloraMax-B11 (FM; Pacific Vet Group USA Inc.), to evaluate the effects on gut morphology, Salmonella intestinal colonization, and horizontal transmission, along with its effects on BW and related performance in broiler chickens under simulated commercial hatching management and shipping conditions. Morphometric analysis showed increased villus height, villus width, villus to crypt ratio, and villus surface area index in chickens treated with EB + FM groups. Significant reductions in Salmonella recovery, incidence, and horizontal transmission were also observed among the same groups, suggesting beneficial effects of early feeding and competitive exclusion by probiotic bacteria. Improved gut morphology and Salmonella exclusion was very well supported by BW data with significantly lower early BW loss and overall BW gains in birds treated with EB + FM mixture. The results of this study demonstrated that the combination of EB and FM improved gut morphology, reduced the amount of Salmonella that could be recovered, as well as improved BW when compared with controls and each product individually. These data address both animal welfare and food safety concerns faced by the poultry industry.

Abstract
Little is known about physiological responses of early- versus late-hatching chicks to early posthatch conditions in broiler practice. We investigated effects of hatching time on perinatal broiler physiology in 2 hatching systems, differing in conditions: a conventional hatcher, where chicks are deprived of feed and water between hatching and the moment of chick pulling (d E21.5), and a patio system, in which the hatching and brooding phase are combined, and chicks have immediate posthatch feed and water access. Climate conditions in patio also differ with about 3°C lower temperature and 20% lower RH compared with conventional hatchers. At E18, fertile eggs were transferred to either a hatcher or the patio until the end of incubation. From each system, 50 newly hatched chicks were collected at 3 hatching times: at 468 h (early), 483 h (midterm), and 498 h (late) of incubation, of which 25 chicks were decapitated for analyses of physiological parameters. The other 25 chicks were returned to the hatching system for analyses after 515 h of incubation (E21.5). At hatch, weights of the heart, lungs, stomach, and intestine increased with hatching time, concurrent with a decrease in residual yolk weight, regardless of hatching system, and indicating that later hatching chicks are more matured. Weights of the heart, liver, stomach, and intestines were lower in hatcher than in patio chicks. Between hatch and E21.5, residual yolk weight decreased, whereas organ weights increased in both fasted hatcher and fed patio chicks, but at a higher rate in the latter. At E21.5, plasma glucose and triiodothyronine had increased with time after hatch in patio chicks, whereas levels were similar among hatching times and lower in hatcher chicks. Early feed and water access seems to enable early hatching chicks to compensate for their apparent disadvantage in development at hatching, whereas chicks subjected to fasting show metabolic adaptations to preserve nutrients. Chick physiology at chick pulling time was shown to vary with time after hatching and posthatch conditions, especially feed access.

Abstract
Objetivou-se avaliar o uso de dieta pré-alojamento em pintos, provenientes de matrizes de corte, de diferentes idades. Foram utilizados 840 pintos de corte, machos, com um dia de idade, distribuídos em um delineamento inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 2x2 (duas idades de matriz X dois regimes alimentares), com sete repetições de 30 aves por unidade experimental. Os tratamentos consistiram em arraçoamento de pintos, oriundos de matrizes de 33 e 68 semanas de idade, com dieta pré-alojamento ou mantidos em jejum até o alojamento. Os parâmetros: consumo de ração, conversão alimentar, peso corporal, ganho de peso diário e índice de eficiência produtiva foram analisados semanalmente até os 42 dias de idade. Aos 1; 2 e 7 dias de idade, duas aves de cada parcela foram sacrificadas para estudo dos pesos dos órgãos gastrointestinais. O fornecimento da dieta pré-alojamento afetou o desempenho e o peso dos órgãos dos frangos aos 2; 7 e 14 dias de idade, porém não afetou o índice de eficiência produtiva em frangos de corte ao final do período experimental. A idade da matriz influenciou o peso dos pintos em todas as idades analisadas. Ao serem considerados os resultados para os parâmetros de desempenho zootécnico obtidos, o fornecimento de dieta pré-alojamento na fase pós-eclosão influenciou positivamente o desenvolvimento dos órgãos do trato gastrintestinal e o desempenho zootécnico de frangos de corte na fase inicial de crescimento. Dessa maneira, pode ser utilizada como uma alternativa de arraçoamento destinada a um novo mercado que abate frangos nessa idade.

Abstract
During the first week of the posthatching period, before the immune system is mature enough to produce its own B lymphocytes, a chick's humoral immunity depends on maternal antibodies (IgY) received from the egg yolk. During incubation and after hatching, the yolk sac (YS) membrane transfers nutrients (including IgY) from the egg yolk to the developing embryo or newly hatched chick. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of breeder flock age on the total IgY content of egg yolks and chick YS from a commercial broiler breeder strain. Hatching eggs from the same broiler breeder flock were collected at 32, 40, and 55 wk of age. One group of eggs per flock age was used to determine the egg yolk total IgY content. Another group of eggs was incubated for 21.5 d, and upon hatching, the YS of newly hatched chicks were collected to determine the total IgY content. Egg and egg yolk weight increased with flock age, but YS weights did not reflect egg yolk weight. The total IgY content per gram of egg yolk increased with flock age; this fact plus the observed yolk weight increase with flock age notably increased the total IgY contained in yolks of eggs laid by 55-wk-old breeders. However, chicks hatching from 55-wk-old breeders had less IgY per gram of YS than chicks from 32- and 40-wk-old breeders. Whether there are differences in the rates of YS absorption between chicks of different breeder ages is unknown. This research provided total IgY values for broiler breeder egg yolk and chick YS of a commonly used meat-type chicken strain. Differences in egg yolk and YS total IgY contents due to flock age in this type of bird had not been previously reported. Research on the physiological consequences of YS absorption rates in chicks from different breeder ages is advised.

Abstract
Although embryo and chicken growth and development rely on mineral nutrition, information on mineral levels in the egg compartments during incubation is limited. Accordingly, we examined P, Ca, Fe, Zn, Cu, and Mn levels in the yolk of breeder eggs during incubation and the effect of embryonic mineral (with specific nutrients) enrichment on yolk mineral levels and consumption. First, fertile eggs were examined on day of setting (DOS), embryonic day (E) 11, E13, E15, E17, E19, E20, and day of hatch (DOH) for the mineral content in the yolk (and albumen on DOS) by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy. Results showed that on DOS, the yolk is the major origin for Mn, P, Fe, Ca, Cu, and Zn. Interestingly, P, Fe, Zn, Cu, and Mn were mostly consumed from the yolk until E17, after which their consumption was very low. Consumption of P was constant until E17 and then decreased until E20. Consumption of Fe, Zn, Cu, and Mn was medium to mild until E11, increased between E11 and E17, and minimal between E17 and DOH. Enrichment treatment, where fertile eggs were divided into 2 groups [nonenriched (control) and enriched (with minerals, vitamins, and carbohydrates on E17 using the in ovo feeding method)] showed that the enriched group had higher Fe, Zn, Cu, and Mn levels than the nonenriched group and exhibited higher consumption of Fe, Zn, and Mn between E20 and DOH. Analysis of the shell mineral composition along incubation showed that the shell released low amounts of P, Fe, and Mn in comparison with the yolk mineral content. Therefore, we concluded that the shell is a minor source of these minerals. Studying the mineral resources and consumption of embryos can lead to a better understanding of the mineral limitations of embryos during incubation. Additionally, because minerals are important for the development of the embryo, the higher mineral levels and consumption observed in the enriched group may affect the development of critical organs, such as the skeletal system.

Abstract
The effects of in ovo injection of different carbohydrate solutions on hatchability of fertilized eggs (HF), rate of hatch, BW, body moisture, yolk sac weight, and yolk sac moisture of Ross × 708 broiler chicks, hatched from eggs laid by a 34-wk-old breeder flock, were investigated. Eggs containing live embryos were injected, using an automated multiple-egg injector, in the amnion on d 18.5 of incubation with 0.1, 0.4, 0.7, or 1.0 mL of commercial diluent or a carbohydrate dissolved in diluent. The commercial diluent containing 0.25 g/mL of one of the following carbohydrates was injected into eggs: glucose, fructose, sucrose, maltose, or dextrin. The results showed that no carbohydrate type or solution volume affected rate of hatch. Absolute and proportional BW on day of hatch were positively related to injection volume (P < 0.001). However, HF was negatively related to injection volume (P < 0.001). To realize an HF of 90%, the injection volume could not exceed 0.4 mL for fructose or sucrose and could not exceed 0.7 mL for glucose, maltose, or dextrin. Yolk-free BW was negatively related to injection volume of fructose and sucrose (P < 0.004), but was not related to injection volume of diluent, glucose, maltose, and dextrin. Conversely, absolute and proportional yolk sac weights were positively related to injection volume of fructose, sucrose, and dextrin (P < 0.01), but were also not significantly related to injection volume of diluent, glucose, and maltose. Yolk sac moisture was positively related to injection volume for all injectables, including the diluent (P < 0.03). However, body moisture and yolk-free body moisture were not related to injection type or volume. In conclusion, the use of carbohydrates added to a commercial diluent for the in ovo injection of broiler hatching eggs requires the use of appropriate volumes to promote growth and nutrient utilization without adversely affecting HF.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to determine the effects of flock age and egg weight on hatching egg characteristics, fertility, hatchability, salable chick production, and broiler performance using a commercial Cobb 500 broiler breeder flock. Hatching eggs from the same breeder flock in 3 weight categories (light, average, and heavy) were obtained from a commercial hatchery when the birds were 29 and 59 wk of age. One group of eggs per age and weight category was selected to assess specific gravity and was broken open to weigh egg components. Another group of eggs was incubated for 21.5 d and incubation parameters were measured. At hatching, all salable chicks were individually weighed and placed in floor pens, where they were grown out for 41 d. Daily mortality, weekly feed consumption, and individual BW at 21 and 41 d were recorded. Irrespective of flock age and egg weight, all eggs had a specific gravity lower than 1.080, the commercial set value. Eggs from the young flock age had a smaller proportion of yolk and a greater proportion of albumen. Age affected fertility, with a lower value observed at 29 wk of age. Chicks from the flock at 59 wk hatched earlier than chicks from the flock at 29 wk, and light eggs hatched earlier than both average and heavy eggs. Broilers from the 29-wk-old breeders had a lower final BW than broilers from the 59-wk-old breeders. The smaller proportion of yolk in eggs from 29-wk-old broiler breeders may be associated with the low final BW observed in their offspring. This could mean that chicks hatching from young broiler breeders, which produce eggs with small yolks, may be at a disadvantage when reared under the same conditions as chicks produced by older broiler breeders whose eggs have larger yolks.

Abstract
Two experiments were conducted to assess the effect of delayed access to feed after hatch and the potential of two carbohydrate oligomers, trehalose and palatinose, as supplements for early feeding of broiler chickens. A total of 360 and 252 straight run broiler chicks were used in Experiments 1 and 2, respectively, with each involving six treatments and six replicates. The diets were commercial in nature and supplemented with palatinose or trehalose (at 10 or 20 g/kg). Chicks were allowed to access feed within 8 h of hatch or 36 h. In Experiment 2, the supplements were fed at 10 or 20 g/kg diet; the commercial diets was also fed immediately or delayed. One of the diets contains zinc-bacitracin at 50 ppm and fed within 8 h of hatch. Delayed access to feed and water was found to reduce starting weight at placement whereas early access to feed generally improved it. Supplementation with trehalose, in particular led to higher (P < 0.001) 21-day weights than in the other groups although feed conversion ratio was not improved. The benefits of early feeding was demonstrated and trehalose may have some potential as an early feed supplement but further studies are required into how it can be applied at economic levels to minimise production costs down.

Abstract
In the present study, we examined the composition, amount, and uptake of yolk nutrients [fat, protein, water, and carbohydrates (COH)] during incubation of eggs from 30- and 50-wk-old broiler breeder hens. Eggs were sampled at embryonic d 0 (fresh eggs), 13, 15, 17, 19, and 21 (hatch). Egg, embryo, yolk content, and yolk sac membrane were weighed, and the yolk sac (YS; i.e., yolk content + yolk sac membrane) composition was analyzed. From 30 to 50 wk of age, the albumen weight increased by 13.3%, whereas the yolk increased by more than 40%. The proportion of fat in the fresh yolk of the 30-wk-old group was 23.8% compared with 27.4% in the 50-wk-old group, whereas the proportion of protein was 17.9% compared with 15.6%, respectively. During incubation, results indicated that water and protein infiltrated from other egg compartments to the YS. Accordingly, the calculated change in the content of water and protein between fresh yolk and sampled YS does not represent the true uptake of these components from the YS to the embryo, and only fat uptake from the YS can be accurately estimated. By embryonic d 15, fat uptake relative to embryo weight was lower in the 30-wk-old group than in the 50-wk-old group. However, by embryonic d 21, embryos of both groups reached similar relative fat uptake, suggesting that to hatch, embryos must attain a certain amount of fat as a source of energy for the hatching process. The amount of COH in the YS increased similarly during incubation in eggs from hens of both ages, reaching a peak at embryonic d 19, suggesting COH synthesis in the YS. At hatch, the amount of protein, water, and COH in the residual YS, relative to the weight of the yolk-free chick, was similar in eggs from young and old hens. However, chicks from the younger hens had less fat in the YS for their immediate posthatch nutrition compared with those from the older hens.

Abstract
In field conditions, a fasting period of 24 to 72 h after hatch is common, which is associated with delayed gastrointestinal development and yolk utilization and retarded subsequent performance. Hardly any information is available about the influence of diet composition in the first days on later life and additionally, effects of early feeding on thermoregulatory development are also not known. The aim of this study was to investigate effects of diet composition in early fed broiler chickens on their (thermoregulatory) development. Shortly after hatch, 200 Hybro chickens (initial BW of 43.6 g) were assigned to 1 of 5 feed treatments: control, dextrose, albumen, prestarter, or prestarter plus fat. Water was available ad libitum. Measurements were done in 10 replicates of 4 chickens per treatment. At d 2 or 3, half of the chickens were exposed to 20 degrees C for 30 min to determine resistance against cold exposure and rectal temperature was determined just before, immediately after, and 30 min after the end of this cold exposure. Thereafter, all chickens were killed to investigate body development. Chickens in both prestarter groups developed faster than in the other 3 groups, expressed by a higher BW, yolk-free body mass, heart and liver weight, and higher chick and intestine length. Between d 2 and 3, differences in these variables among chickens from both prestarter groups and other groups increased. Rectal temperature before cold exposure was higher in chickens from both prestarter groups (40.6 and 40.7 degrees C, respectively) and decreased less (0.6 and 0.7 degrees C, respectively) during cold exposure than in chickens from the control (39.5 and 1.2 degrees C, respectively) and albumen group (39.8 and 2.1 degrees C, respectively), whereas chickens from the dextrose group were in between (40.4 and 1.2 degrees C, respectively). We conclude that early fed diet composition in broiler chickens is (besides general development) important for development of both body temperature and resistance against cold exposure, probably as a reflection of a changed metabolic rate.

Abstract
A total of 684 Hisex Brown day-old chicks were studied. The chicks were randomly assigned into three groups as follows: (1) chicks with immediate feed access; (2) chicks with 48 h delay in feed access, and (3) chicks with 72 h delay in feed access. For each group, chicks were assigned into 4 replications of 57 birds each. Prior to feed access, the chicks were weighed. Samples of chicks were used to weigh yolk sac at 1, 3 and 7 days and to collect blood at 1, 3, 7, 14 and 56 days. Also, reared chicks were weighed weekly. The results indicated that chick weights decreased during the holding period. Yolk sac utilisation was similar between groups, while morbidity and mortality increased linearly with the duration of delay in feed access. At 56 days, chicks having delayed access to feed were lighter than those without delay in feed access. Serum concentration of glucose up to 14 days and of total protein and triglycerides until 56 days decreased with the increasing duration of delay in feed access. It can be concluded that delayed feed access is detrimental to the juvenile performance of layer-type chicks and has a negative age-related effect on the serum concentrations of glucose, triglycerides and total protein.

We hypothesized that, as the supply of preformed glucose diminishes during development, the embryo would transition to a greater rate of gluconeogenesis (GNG) and that GNG would be greater in embryos from small vs. typical size eggs. Gluconeogenesis by embryos from small (51.1 +/- 3.46 g) and typical size (65 +/- 4.35 g) broiler breeder eggs was measured by dosing [(13)C(6)]glucose (15 mgxegg(-1)) into the chorio-allantoic fluid for 3 consecutive days to achieve isotopic steady-state before blood collection on embryonic day (e) 12, e14, e16, and e18 (4 to 5 eggsxsize(-1)xd(-1)). The (13)C-Mass isotopomer enrichment of blood glucose was determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. On e14, e16, and e18, but not on e12, embryos from small eggs weighed less (P < 0.05) than typical size eggs. For both sizes of eggs, blood glucose concentration, glucose entry rate (g.d(-1)), and Cori cycling and glucose (13)C-recycling (% of entry rate) increased (P < 0.05) with development. On e12 and e14, rates of glucose entry and Cori cycle flux were greater (P < 0.05) for embryos from small eggs. When standardized to BW (g.100 g of BW(-1)xd(-1)), glucose entry and Cori and non-Cori cycle fluxes were greater for embryos from small eggs. From e12 through e18, blood concentrations of gluconeogenic AA (threonine, glutamine, arginine, proline, isoleucine, and valine) were 25 to 48% less (P < 0.01) in embryos from small eggs. In conclusion, embryos from small eggs exhibit greater rates of GNG earlier in development compared with typical size eggs and, perhaps as a consequence, their reduced embryonic growth may result from diverting greater supplies of AA toward GNG.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of isoenergetic substitution between the three energy delivering macronutrients in pre-starter diets on performance and intermediary nutrient metabolism in broiler chickens. From hatch until 5 days of age, 600 chicks, collected during peak of hatch, were fed one of the three experimental pre-starter diets with isoenergetic (13 MJ metabolisable energy/kg) substitutions between fat (43 vs. 108 g/kg), protein (126 vs. 240 g/kg) and carbohydrates (391 vs. 510 g/kg). After 5 days, commercial grower and finisher diets were provided. Pre-starter composition influenced body weight until slaughter age, although not statistically verifiable. Broilers fed the low protein (LP) pre-starter had the lowest body weight in relation to chickens on the low carbohydrate or low fat pre-starter diet. After hatch, chicks on the LP pre-starter diet were able to use the residual yolk sac more rapidly to fulfil their protein requirement, which is reflected in small intestine and liver development. Also, plasma metabolite levels were influenced mostly by the LP pre-starter, indicating that the main focus for the requirements of newly hatched chicks should be on proteins. Furthermore, optimal nutrition during the first day's post-hatch should take into account the contribution of the yolk.
