Abstract
BACKGROUND The outbreak of the COVID-19 poses a great threat to students globally. China has taken steps to keep students from becoming infected for more than 30 months, while other countries have also taken steps. Comparing the intentions, implementation, immediate and long-term effects of these initiatives can shed more light on the care of adolescents in schools. OBJECTIVE The focus of the study is to describe the full range of school prevention measures in China, identifying when they work and when they do not. At the same time, some typical measures taken in other countries' schools are presented and compared to provide a comprehensive discussion. METHODS This study attempted to combine data comparison, information analysis, policy interpretation, and participatory observation to form a comprehensive analytical network. RESULTS China's schools have gone through of lucky periods, safety periods, difficult periods, and crisis periods. These efforts are due to the government's intense control measures, strict accountability of school administrators, frequent nucleic acid testing, widespread vaccination, and widely implemented online learning. In comparison, the measures taken by China are difficult to implement, and the price paid by the government, schools and students needs to be further assessed and reflected upon. CONCLUSIONS The virus is able to destroy the school's defence with ease. There should be a consensus among countries for a permanent virus control strategy, but the severity of the various measures needs to be appropriately determined, strict control measures can also have negative effects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND COVID-19 caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) can affect multiple organ systems, including the pulmonary vasculature. Endothelial cells (ECs) are thought to play a key role in the propagation of COVID-19, however, our understanding of the exact scale of dysregulation sustained by the pulmonary microvasculature (pMV) remains incomplete. Here we aim to identify transcriptional, phenotypic, and functional changes within the pMV induced by COVID-19. METHODS AND RESULTS Human pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells (HPMVEC) treated with plasma acquired from patients hospitalised with severe COVID-19 were compared to HPMVEC treated with plasma from patients hospitalised without COVID-19 but with other severe illnesses. Exposure to COVID-19 plasma caused a significant functional decline in HPMVECs as seen by a decrease in both cell viability via the WST-1 cell-proliferation assay and cell-to-cell barrier function as measured by electric cell-substrate impedance sensing. High-content imaging using a Cell Painting image-based assay further quantified morphological variations within sub-cellular organelles to show phenotypic changes in the whole endothelial cell, nucleus, mitochondria, plasma membrane and nucleolus morphology. RNA-sequencing of HPMVECs treated with COVID-19 plasma suggests the observed phenotype may, in part, be regulated by genes such as SMAD7, BCOR, SFMBT1, IFIT5 and ZNF566 which are involved in transcriptional regulation, protein monoubiquitination and TGF-β signalling. CONCLUSION AND IMPACT During COVID-19, the pMV undergoes significant remodelling, which is evident based on the functional, phenotypic, and transcriptional changes seen following exposure to COVID-19 plasma. The observed morphological variation may be responsible for downstream complications, such as a decline in overall cellular function and cell-to-cell barrier integrity. Moreover, genes identified through bulk RNA sequencing may contribute to our understanding of the observed phenotype and assist in developing strategies that can inform the rescue of the dysregulated endothelium.

Abstract
The SARS-CoV-2 virus, belonging to the Coronavirus genus, which poses a threat to human health worldwide. Current therapies focus on inhibiting viral replication or using anti-inflammatory/immunomodulatory compounds to enhance host immunity. This makes the active ingredients of traditional Chinese medicine compounds ideal therapies due to their proven safety and minimal toxicity. Previous research suggests that andrographolide and baicalin inhibit coronaviruses; however, their synergistic effects remain unclear. Here, we studied the antiviral mechanisms of their synergistic use in vitro and in vivo. We selected the SARS-CoV-2 pseudovirus for viral studies and found that synergistic andrographolide and baicalein significantly reduced angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 protein level and viral entry of SARS-CoV-2 into cells compared to singal compound individually and inhibited the major protease activity of SARS-CoV-2. This mechanism is essential to reduce the pathogenesis of SARS-CoV-2. In addition, their synergistic use in vivo also inhibited the elevation of pro-inflammatory cytokines, including IL-6 and TNF-α-the primary cytokines in the development of acute respiratory distress syndrome (the main cause of COVID-19 deaths). In conclusion, this study shows that synergistic andrographolide and baicalein treatment acts as potent inhibitors of coronavirus mechanisms in vitro and in vivo-and is more effective together than in isolation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The sars-Cov-2 pandemic has determined psychological stress, particularly in the young population of medical students. We studied the impact of the pandemic on menstrual cycle alteration in relation to psychological stress, presence of depression, sleep disturbances and post-traumatic stress, on a population of medical students. METHODS 293 female students at the Faculty of Medicine and Psychology of the Sapienza University of Rome (23.08 years old ± 3.8) were enrolled. In March 2021, one year after quarantine, a personal data sheet on menstrual cycle, examining the quality of the menstrual cycle during the pandemic, compared to the previous period. Concomitantly, the Beck Depression Inventory and the Impact of Event Scale have been administered. A Pearson chi-square test was assessed to evaluate the difference between the characteristics of the menstrual cycle and the scores obtained with the questionnaires. RESULTS A statistically significant association between menstrual alterations and stress during pandemic had been found. The onset of depressive symptoms and sleep disturbances was observed in 57.1% and in 58.1% of young women with cycle's alterations, respectively. Amenorrhea was three times more common in female students with depressive symptoms, premenstrual syndrome had a significant correlation with both depression and sleep disturbances. The pandemic has been related to menstrual alterations, with depressive symptoms and sleep disorders. Amenorrhea is connected to depression, as observed on the functional hypothalamic amenorrhea. CONCLUSIONS The pandemic affected the menstrual cycle as well as the depressive symptoms and sleep. Practical implications of the study lead to the development of strategies for psychological intervention during the pandemic experience, in order to help medical trainees, with specific attention to women's needs. Future studies should analyze the impact of other types of social stress events, on sleep, depression and the menstrual cycle beside the pandemic.

Abstract
(1) Background: Post-COVID syndrome is defined as symptoms that occur simultaneously with or after a COVID-19 infection, last for 12 weeks, and are not due to another diagnosis. Limited data are available on people's long-term quality of life following a COVID-19 infection. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the long-term quality of life after COVID-19 among employees of a hospital in Germany and to identify risk factors. (2) Methods: A monocentric, cross-sectional study was conducted using the validated and digitized WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire via Netigate® between 10/2022 and 02/2023. Data on the quality of life and global health status were collected in the following four domains: physical health, mental health, social relationships, and the environment. (3) Results: The response rate was 73.8 % (923/1250). Furthermore, 63.4 % of the hospital staff respondents reported at least one persistent symptom after a COVID-19 infection, leading to significant differences in quality of life. Pre-existing conditions, persistent symptoms, and disabilities after a COVID-19 infection as well as a high BMI, no partnership, and a low educational level were found to significantly contribute to a low long-term quality of life. (4) Conclusions: Obesity, a lack of partnership, and a low level of education were independent risk factors for a lower quality of life post-COVID-19 infection in this cohort of hospital staff. Further multicenter studies are required to validate the incidence and their suitability as independent risk factors for post-COVID syndrome.

Abstract
Objective The outbreak of COVID-19 has disrupted social order and placed a heavy burden on the healthcare system. The pandemic also has an unprecedented impact on medical students. Methods We searched PubMed for articles related to COVID-19 and medical students from January 2020 to December 2022. A total of 5358 studies were retrieved and after screening, 176 studies were finally included in this review. Results The impact of COVID-19 on medical students is widespread and profound. First reflected in the transformation of educational models. In the early days, education model quickly shifted from offline to online. In terms of clinical exposure, most students have been suspended from internships, while in some areas with staff shortages they have the opportunity to continue clinical work. Scientific research of medical students is also difficult to carry out due to COVID-19. The epidemic has also seriously damaged students' mental health, and this impact won't simply disappear with the improvement of the epidemic situation. The career intentions of medical students may also become firmer or change due to COVID-19. International medical electives have also been negatively affected by COVID-19 due to travel restriction. Even in the postpandemic era, with the gradual resumption of work, production and school, medical students are still affected in some ways by COVID-19. Conclusion The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on both the education of medical students and their personal development. Through COVID-19, we should reflect on what models of medical education should be developed in the future. Based on the experiences learned from COVID-19, we believe that a more flexible blended education model may be the most promising.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Fear of a global public health issue and fresh infection wave in the persistent COVID-19 pandemic has been enflamed by the appearance of the novel variant Omicron BF.7 lineage. Recently, it has been seeing the novel Omicron subtype BF.7 lineage has sprawled exponentially in Hohhot. More than anything, risk stratification is significant to ascertain patients infected with COVID-19 who the most need in-hospital or in-home management. The study intends to understand the clinical severity and epidemiological characteristics of COVID-19 Omicron subvariant BF.7. lineage via gathering and analyzing the cases with Omicron subvariant in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia. METHODS Based upon this, we linked variant Omicron BF.7 individual-level information including sex, age, symptom, underlying conditions and vaccination record. Further, we divided the cases into various groups and assessed the severity of patients according to the symptoms of patients with COVID-19. Clinical indicators and data might help to predict disadvantage outcomes and progression among Omicron BF.7 patients. RESULTS In this study, in patients with severe symptoms, some indicators from real world data such as white blood cells, AST, ALT and CRE in patients with Omicron BF.7 in severe symptoms were significantly higher than mild and asymptomatic patients, while some indicators were significantly lower. CONCLUSIONS Above results suggested that the indicators were associated with ponderance of clinical symptoms. Our survey emphasized the value of timely investigations of clinical data obtained by systemic study to acquire detailed information.

Abstract
Objective During the COVID-19 pandemic, people posted help-seeking messages on Weibo, a mainstream social media in China, to solve practical problems. As viruses, policies, and perceptions have all changed, help-seeking behavior on Weibo has been shown to evolve in this paper. Methods We compare and analyze the help-seeking messages from three dimensions: content categories, time distribution, and retweeting influencing factors. First, we crawled the help-seeking messages from Weibo, and successively used CNN and xlm-roberta-large models for text classification to analyze the changes of help-seeking messages in different stages from the content categories dimension. Subsequently, we studied the time distribution of help-seeking messages and calculated the time lag using TLCC algorithm. Finally, we analyze the changes of the retweeting influencing factors of help-seeking messages in different stages by negative binomial regression. Results (1) Help-seekers in different periods have different emphasis on content. (2) There is a significant correlation between new daily help-seeking messages and new confirmed cases in the middle stage (1/1/2022-5/20/2022), with a 16-day time lag, but there is no correlation in the latter stage (12/10/2022-2/25/2023). (3) In all the periods, pictures or videos, and the length of the text have a significant positive effect on the number of retweets of help-seeking messages, but other factors do not have exactly the same effect on the retweeting volume. Conclusion This paper demonstrates the evolution of help-seeking messages during different stages of the COVID-19 pandemic in three dimensions: content categories, time distribution, and retweeting influencing factors, which are worthy of reference for decision-makers and help-seekers, as well as provide thinking for subsequent studies.

Abstract
The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has caused a global pandemic that has wreaked havoc on the lives of millions of people around the world. Confinement measures aim to reduce the epidemic's spread and minimize the burden of morbidity and mortality. In response to the challenges caused by the pandemic, digital health passports have been developed exponentially. We highlight the latent epidemiological barriers to health passports to achieve standardized digital care platforms. This review paper not only highlights the epidemiological barriers but also articulates the possible infrastructure required to make the International Standard for a multi-factor authenticated and validated health passport.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: The COVID-19 outbreak has necessitated the prolonged use of N95 facemasks in addition to traditional surgical facemasks by healthcare workers. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of wearing N95 facemasks in addition to surgical facemasks on peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2) and heart rate (HR) among dental professionals during routine care. Materials and Methods: This prospective study compared SpO2 and HR between dental providers wearing N95 + surgical facemasks vs. wearing a surgical facemask only. SpO2 and HR were recorded using a portable pulse oximeter before wearing the facemask (T0); at 30 min (T1); at 1 h (T2); and at the end of clinical activity (T3). Inter-group and intra-group differences were assessed with independent t tests and repeated measures ANOVA, respectively. Results: A total of 88 participants (57 wearing N95 + surgical facemasks, and 31 wearing a surgical facemask only) completed the study. The two groups did not statistically differ in SpO2 at different timepoints nor showed any intra-group differences. The participants wearing N95 + surgical facemasks exhibited a statistically higher HR at T0 (p = 0.007), T2 (p = 0.010), and T3 (p = 0.014) compared to those wearing a surgical facemask only. A statistically significant decrease was observed in HR between T0 and T3 in those wearing N95 + surgical facemasks (p = 0.012). No intra-group differences were seen in HR over time in those wearing a surgical facemask only. Conclusions: The continuous use of an N95 in addition to a surgical facemask did not show any significant effects in SpO2 during routine care; however, the concurrent use of an N95 and a surgical facemask seemed to be accompanied by a decrease in HR, although the values remained within the normal range.

Abstract
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused a severe epidemic due to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2). Recent studies have found that patients do not completely recover from acute infections, but instead, suffer from a variety of post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection, known as long COVID. The effects of long COVID can be far-reaching, with a duration of up to six months and a range of symptoms such as cognitive dysfunction, immune dysregulation, microbiota dysbiosis, myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome, myocarditis, pulmonary fibrosis, cough, diabetes, pain, reproductive dysfunction, and thrombus formation. However, recent studies have shown that naringenin and naringin have palliative effects on various COVID-19 sequelae. Flavonoids such as naringin and naringenin, commonly found in fruits and vegetables, have various positive effects, including reducing inflammation, preventing viral infections, and providing antioxidants. This article discusses the molecular mechanisms and clinical effects of naringin and naringenin on treating the above diseases. It proposes them as potential drugs for the treatment of long COVID, and it can be inferred that naringin and naringenin exhibit potential as extended long COVID medications, in the future likely serving as nutraceuticals or clinical supplements for the comprehensive alleviation of the various manifestations of COVID-19 complications.

Abstract
Exosomes are the smallest subset of extracellular signaling vesicles secreted by most cells with the ability to communicate with other tissues and cell types over long distances. Their use in regenerative medicine has gained tremendous momentum recently due to their ability to be utilized as therapeutic options for a wide array of diseases/conditions. Over 5000 publications are currently being published yearly on this topic, and this number is only expected to dramatically increase as novel therapeutic strategies continue to be developed. Today exosomes have been applied in numerous contexts including neurodegenerative disorders (Alzheimer's disease, central nervous system, depression, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, post-traumatic stress disorders, traumatic brain injury, peripheral nerve injury), damaged organs (heart, kidney, liver, stroke, myocardial infarctions, myocardial infarctions, ovaries), degenerative processes (atherosclerosis, diabetes, hematology disorders, musculoskeletal degeneration, osteoradionecrosis, respiratory disease), infectious diseases (COVID-19, hepatitis), regenerative procedures (antiaging, bone regeneration, cartilage/joint regeneration, osteoarthritis, cutaneous wounds, dental regeneration, dermatology/skin regeneration, erectile dysfunction, hair regrowth, intervertebral disc repair, spinal cord injury, vascular regeneration), and cancer therapy (breast, colorectal, gastric cancer and osteosarcomas), immune function (allergy, autoimmune disorders, immune regulation, inflammatory diseases, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis). This scoping review is a first of its kind aimed at summarizing the extensive regenerative potential of exosomes over a broad range of diseases and disorders.

Abstract
Recently, a global outbreak of COVID-19 has rapidly spread to various national regions. As the number of COVID-19 patients has increased, some of those infected with SARS-CoV-2 have developed a variety of psychiatric symptoms, including depression, cognitive impairment, and fatigue. A distinct storm of inflammatory factors that contribute to the initial disease but also a persistent post-acute phase syndrome has been reported in patients with COVID-19. Neuropsychological symptoms including depression, cognitive impairment, and fatigue are closely related to circulating and local (brain) inflammatory factors. Natural products are currently being examined for their ability to treat numerous complications caused by COVID-19. Among them, ginseng has anti-inflammatory, immune system stimulating, neuroendocrine modulating, and other effects, which may help improve psychiatric symptoms. This review summarizes the basic mechanisms of COVID-19 pneumonia, psychiatric symptoms following coronavirus infections, effects of ginseng on depression, restlessness, and other psychiatric symptoms associated with post-COVID syn-dromes, as well as possible mechanisms underlying these effects.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aims to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying the interaction of major depressive disorder (MDD) and COVID-19, and on this basis, diagnostic biomarkers and potential therapeutic drugs are further explored. METHODS Differential gene expression analysis and weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) were employed to identify common key genes involved in the pathogenesis of COVID-19 and MDD. Correlations with clinical features were explored. Detailed mechanisms were further investigated through protein interaction networks, GSEA, and immune cell infiltration analysis. Finally, Enrichr's Drug Signature Database and Coremine Medical were used to predict the potential drugs associated with key genes. RESULTS The study identified 18 genes involved in both COVID-19 and MDD. Four key genes (MBP, CYP4B1, ERMN, and SLC26A7) were selected based on clinical relevance. A multi-gene prediction model showed good diagnostic efficiency for the two diseases: AUC of 0.852 for COVID-19 and 0.915 for MDD. GO and GSEA analyses identified specific biological functions and pathways associated with key genes in COVID-19 (axon guidance, metabolism, stress response) and MDD (neuron ensheathment, biosynthesis, glutamatergic neuron differentiation). The key genes also affected immune infiltration. Potential therapeutic drugs, including small molecules and traditional Chinese medicines, targeting these genes were identified. CONCLUSION This study provides insights into the complex biological mechanisms underlying COVID-19 and MDD, develops an effective diagnostic model, and predicts potential therapeutic drugs, which may contribute to the prevention and treatment of these two prevalent diseases.

Abstract
COVID-19 is an illness caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, a type of coronavirus initially identified in China in late 2019, emerging as the leading cause of death attributed to a single infectious agent worldwide. The COVID-19 pandemic poses a substantial challenge to global public health in the first quarter of this century. The rapid evolution of the pandemic and its intricate response have hindered the formulation of definitive conclusions, and it may take years to comprehend its long-term effects. Assessing the extent of organ damage beyond the lungs could guide physicians in the disease's severity or progression. Based on these characteristics, an earlier and more targeted approach can be initiated at the appropriate moment. The association between hepatic profile and mortality in COVID-19 patients is a subject of scientific interest, as SARS-CoV-2 infection can lead to hepatitis. In severe cases, it may induce sepsis-related liver injury, potentially culminating in hepatic failure. METHODOLOGY The study's objective is to determine the prevalence of mortality in adult patients with elevated hepatic profile hospitalized due to SARS-CoV-2 infection. This cross-sectional, monocentric study was conducted at a healthcare institution in Bogotá, Colombia. RESULTS This study includes 91 patients with confirmed diagnoses of COVID-19, revealing a prevalence of hepatic profile alterations in 61.5% (n=56) of hospitalized patients. The mortality rate observed is 17.6% (n= 16), with an odds ratio (OR) of 12.4 (95% CI = 1.56-99.0) in patients with hepatic profile alterations. CONCLUSIONS This research underscores the importance of early detection of hepatic profile alterations in hospitalized patients with COVID-19. Not only are these alterations prevalent, but they are also potentially associated with an increased risk of mortality. These findings emphasize the necessity for further research to enhance strategies and prognostication for patients with COVID-19 in the future.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in millions of deaths globally, and while several diagnostic systems were proposed, real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) remains the gold standard. However, diagnostic reagents, including enzymes used in RT-PCR, are subject to centralized production models and intellectual property restrictions, which present a challenge for less developed countries. With the aim of generating a standardized One-Step open RT-qPCR protocol to detect SARS-CoV-2 RNA in clinical samples, we purified and tested recombinant enzymes and a non-proprietary buffer. The protocol utilized M-MLV RT and Taq DNA pol enzymes to perform a Taqman probe-based assay. Synthetic RNA samples were used to validate the One-Step RT-qPCR components, demonstrating sensitivity comparable to a commercial kit routinely employed in clinical settings for patient diagnosis. Further evaluation on 40 clinical samples (20 positive and 20 negative) confirmed its comparable diagnostic accuracy. This study represents a proof of concept for an open approach to developing diagnostic kits for viral infections and diseases, which could provide a cost-effective and accessible solution for less developed countries.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE COVID-19 is a highly transmissible disease that can result in long-term symptoms, including chronic pain. However, the mechanisms behind the persistence of long-COVID pain are not yet fully elucidated, highlighting the need for further research to establish causality. Mendelian randomization (MR), a statistical technique for determining a causal relationship between exposure and outcome, has been employed in this study to investigate the association between COVID-19 and chronic pain. MATERIAL AND METHODS The IVW, MR Egger, and weighted median methods were employed. Heterogeneity was evaluated using Cochran's Q statistic. MR Egger intercept and MR-PRESSO tests were performed to detect pleiotropy. The Bonferroni method was employed for the correction of multiple testing. R software was used for all statistical analyses. RESULT Based on the IVW method, hospitalized COVID-19 patients exhibit a higher risk of experiencing lower leg joint pain compared to the normal population. Meanwhile, the associations between COVID-19 hospitalization and back pain, headache, and pain all over the body were suggestive. Additionally, COVID-19 patients requiring hospitalization were found to have a suggestive higher risk of experiencing neck or shoulder pain and pain all over the body compared to those who did not require hospitalization. Patients with severe respiratory-confirmed COVID-19 showed a suggestive increased risk of experiencing pain all over the body compared to the normal population. CONCLUSION Our study highlights the link between COVID-19 severity and pain in different body regions, with implications for targeted interventions to reduce COVID-19 induced chronic pain burden.

Abstract
Context In some patients, symptoms may persist after COVID-19, defined as long COVID. Its pathogenesis is still debated and many hypotheses have been raised. Objective Our primary objective was to evaluate the corticotroph and somatotroph functions of patients previously infected with SARS-CoV-2 and experiencing post-COVID-19 syndrome to detect any deficiencies that may explain long COVID. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted including patients who had previously contracted SARS-CoV-2 with a postinfection period of 3 months or less to 15 months, divided into 2 groups. The first group (G1) comprised fully recovered patients, while the second group (G2) included patients experiencing long COVID. The primary outcome was the comparison of corticotroph and somatotroph functions. Results A total of 64 patients were divided into 2 groups, each consisting of 32 patients. G2 exhibited more frequently anterior pituitary deficits compared to G1 (P = .045): for the corticotroph axis (G1: 6.3% vs G2: 28.1%) and for the somatotroph axis (G1: 31.3% vs G2: 59.4%). Baseline cortisol level was significantly lower in G2 (G1: 13.37 µg/dL vs G2: 11.59 µg/dL) (P = .045). The peak cortisol level was also lower in G2 (G1: 23.60 µg/dL vs G2: 19.14 µg/dL) (P = .01). For the somatotroph axis, the insulin growth factor-1 level was lower in G2 (G1: 146.03 ng/mL vs G2: 132.25 ng/mL) (P = .369). The peak growth hormone level was also lower in G2 (G1: 4.82 ng/mL vs G2: 2.89 ng/mL) (P = .041). Conclusion The results showed that long COVID patients in our cohort were more likely to have anterior pituitary deficiencies. The endocrine hypothesis involving anterior pituitary insufficiency can be considered to explain long COVID.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The diagnostic assay leveraging multiple reverse transcription loop-mediated isothermal amplification (RT-LAMP) could meet the requirements for rapid nucleic acid detection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). METHODS The devised assay merged the lateral flow assay with the RT-LAMP technology and designed specific primers for the simultaneous detection of the target and human-derived internal reference genes within a single reaction. An inquiry into the assay's limit of detection (LOD), sensitivity, and specificity was carried out. The effectiveness of this assay was validated using 498 clinical specimens. RESULTS This LOD of the assay was determined to be 500 copies/mL, and there was no observed cross-reaction with other respiratory pathogens. The detection results derived from clinical specimens showed substantial concordance with those from real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) (Cohen's kappa, 0.876; 95% CI: 0.833-0.919; p<0.005). The diagnostic sensitivity and specificity were 87.1% and 100%, respectively. CONCLUSION The RT-LAMP assay, paired with a straightforward and disposable lateral immunochromatographic strip, achieves visual detection of dual targets for SARS-CoV-2 immediatly. Moreover, the entire procedure abstains from nucleic acids extraction. The samples are lysed at room temperature and subsequently proceed directly to the RT-LAMP reaction, which can be executed within 30 minutes at a constant temperature of 60-65°C. Then, the RT-LAMP amplification products are visualized using colloidal gold test strips. Abstract
COVID-19 pandemic completely changed every aspect of human life. Several measures were adopted to limit the spreading of the infection. Among these, vaccination was the main one. Globally, vaccination campaign was a success, showing to be efficient in controlling and preventing the SARS-Cov2 infection, reducing the risk of disease progression, hospitalization, and mortality. However, with the increasing number of vaccines administered, several cutaneous reactions were described, making dermatologists key players in their recognition and treatment. Among these, also viral reactivations have been described. In particular, cases of Pityriasis Rosea (PR) and PR-like reactivations have been collected. An early diagnosis is mandatory to avoid mistreatments. In this context, we conducted a review of the current literature investigating cases of PR following COVID-19 vaccination with the aim of understanding the possible pathogenetic mechanisms and causal correlation as well as to investigate the risk of this cutaneous eruption, to offer clinicians a wide perspective on the linkage between PR and COVID-19 vaccines.

Abstract
Objective Improving the detection capability and efficiency of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) RNA specimens is very important for the prevention and control of the outbreak of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). In this study, we evaluated the detection capability and efficiency of two outbreaks of COVID-19 before and after the process re-engineering in April and July 2022. Methods This retrospective cross-sectional study involved 359,845 SARS-CoV-2 RNA specimens 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after the two outbreaks of COVID-19 in April and July. The number, transportation time and detection time of specimens, and the number of reports of more than 24 h were analyzed by SPSS software. Results While 16.84% of people chose nasopharyngeal swabs (NPS) specimens, 83.16% chose oropharyngeal swabs (OPS) specimens to detect SARS-CoV-2 RNA. There were significant upward trends in the percentage of 10 sample pooling (P-10) from April before process re-engineering to July after process re-engineering (p < 0.001). Compared with April, the number of specimens in July increased significantly not only 2 weeks before but also 2 weeks after the outbreak of COVID-19, with an increase of 35.46 and 93.94%, respectively. After the process re-engineering, the number of reports more than 24 h in the 2 weeks before and after the outbreak of COVID-19 in July was significantly lower than that in April before process re-engineering (0% vs. 0.06% and 0 vs. 0.89%, both p < 0.001). Conclusion The present study shows that strengthening the cooperation of multi-departments in process re-engineering, especially using the P-10 strategy and whole process informatization can improve the detection capability and efficiency of SARS-CoV-2 RNA specimens.

Abstract
Saliva is a promising matrix with several purposes. Our aim is to verify if salivary anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibody determination is suitable for monitoring immune responses. One hundred eighty-seven subjects were enrolled at University-Hospital Padova: 105 females (56.1%) and 82 males (43.9%), 95 (50.8%) children and 92 (49.2%) adults. Subjects self-collected saliva using Salivette; nineteen subjects collected three different samples within the day. A serum sample was obtained for all individuals. The N/S anti-SARS-CoV-2 salivary IgG (sal-IgG) and serum anti-SARS-CoV-2 S-RBD IgG (ser-IgG) were used for determining anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies. The mean (min-max) age was 9.0 (1-18) for children and 42.5 (20-61) for adults. Of 187 samples, 63 were negative for sal-IgG (33.7%), while 7 were negative for ser-IgG (3.7%). Spearman's correlation was 0.56 (p < 0.001). Sal-IgG and ser-IgG levels were correlated with age but not with gender, comorbidities, prolonged therapy, previous SARS-CoV-2 infection, or time from last COVID-19 infection/vaccination. The repeatability ranged from 23.8% (7.4 kAU/L) to 4.0% (3.77 kAU/L). The linearity of the assay was missed in 4/6 samples. No significant intrasubject differences were observed in sal-IgG across samples collected at different time points. Sal-IgG has good agreement with ser-IgG. Noninvasive saliva collection represents an alternative method for antibody measurement, especially in children.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, has fundamentally reshaped the landscape of global public health, with some people suffering more adverse clinical outcomes than others. The aim of this study is to deepen our understanding of the specific impact of acute kidney injury (AKI) on the in-hospital mortality in octogenarian patients with COVID-19. METHODS This is a prospective observational cohort study, which involved 23 COVID-19 hospital units in the Campania Region, Italy. Exposure variables were collected during hospital admission and at discharge. Only patients aged ≥80 years were deemed eligible for the study. RESULTS 197 patients were included in the study (median age 83.0 [82.0-87.0] years; 51.5% men), with a median duration of hospitalization of 15.0 [8.0-25.0] days. From the multivariable Cox regression analysis, after the application of Šidák correction, only the respiratory rate (HR 1.09, 95% CI: 1.04 to 1.14; p < 0.001) and AKI development (HR: 3.40, 95% CI: 1.80 to 6.40; p < 0.001) were independently associated with the primary outcome. Moreover, the Kaplan-Meier analysis showed a significantly different risk of in-hospital mortality between patients with and without AKI (log-rank: <0.0001). CONCLUSIONS In our investigation, we identified a significant association between AKI and mortality rates among octogenarian patients admitted for COVID-19. These findings raise notable concerns and emphasize the imperative for vigilant monitoring of this demographic cohort.

Abstract
This systematic review provides a comprehensive overview of natural SARS-CoV-2 infections in companion animals. The findings show that these infections are relatively rare. Among the examined dogs, only 1.32% tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, while for cats, the rate was 1.55%. Infections in rabbits and ferrets were even less common, at less than 1%. These results support previous research indicating the infrequency of natural infections in companion animals. The review also includes updated studies that involved various pets, such as cats, dogs, ferrets, and rabbits. The majority of the studies analyzed were primarily concerned with screening pets that visited veterinary clinics, regardless of whether they showed any specific signs of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Only a limited number of studies investigated infections in animals suspected of being in contact with owners or other animals that had COVID-19 or were exhibiting symptoms. The most common variant identified among the SARS-CoV-2 variants in the reviewed studies was B.1.1.7 (alpha), followed by B.1.617.2 (delta), B.1.526 (Iota), and others. The emergence of these variants raises concerns about their potential for increased transmissibility and virulence, highlighting the importance of ongoing monitoring of SARS-CoV-2 infections in both humans and animals. Furthermore, most of the reviewed studies indicated that infected pets either showed no symptoms or experienced mild symptoms. This aligns with previous reports suggesting that animals infected with SARS-CoV-2 generally have less severe illness compared to humans. However, it is essential to recognize the possibility of severe illness or death in animals, particularly those with underlying health conditions. Continuous surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 infections in companion animals is crucial for better understanding the virus's epidemiology in animals and developing effective strategies to protect both animal and human health.

Abstract
AIMS The aim of this study is to develop a novel antiviral strategy capable of efficiently targeting a broad set of SARS-CoV-2 variants. BACKGROUND Since the first emergence of SARS-CoV-2, it has rapidly transformed into a global pandemic, posing an unprecedented threat to public health. SARS-CoV-2 is prone to mutation and continues to evolve, leading to the emergence of new variants capable of escaping immune protection achieved due to previous SARS-CoV-2 infections or by vaccination. OBJECTIVE RNA interference (RNAi) is a remarkable biological mechanism that can induce gene silencing by targeting complementary mRNA and inhibiting its translation. METHODS In this study, using the computational approach, we predicted the most efficient siRNA capable of inhibiting SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern (VoCs). RESULTS The presented siRNA was characterized and evaluated for its thermodynamic properties, offsite-target hits, and in silico validation by molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulations (MD) with Human AGO2 protein. CONCLUSION The study contributes to the possibility of designing and developing an effective response strategy against existing variants of concerns and preventing further.

Abstract
The 2022 FIFA World Cup was the first major multi-continental sporting Mass Gathering Event (MGE) of the post COVID-19 era to allow foreign spectators. Such large-scale MGEs can potentially lead to outbreaks of infectious disease and contribute to the global dissemination of such pathogens. Here we adapt previous work and create a generalisable model framework for assessing the use of disease control strategies at such events, in terms of reducing infections and hospitalisations. This framework utilises a combination of meta-populations based on clusters of people and their vaccination status, Ordinary Differential Equation integration between fixed time events, and Latin Hypercube sampling. We use the FIFA 2022 World Cup as a case study for this framework (modelling each match as independent 7 day MGEs). Pre-travel screenings of visitors were found to have little effect in reducing COVID-19 infections and hospitalisations. With pre-match screenings of spectators and match staff being more effective. Rapid Antigen (RA) screenings 0.5 days before match day performed similarly to RT-PCR screenings 1.5 days before match day. Combinations of pre-travel and pre-match testing led to improvements. However, a policy of ensuring that all visitors had a COVID-19 vaccination (second or booster dose) within a few months before departure proved to be much more efficacious. The State of Qatar abandoned all COVID-19 related travel testing and vaccination requirements over the period of the World Cup. Our work suggests that the State of Qatar may have been correct in abandoning the pre-travel testing of visitors. However, there was a spike in COVID-19 cases and hospitalisations within Qatar over the World Cup. Given our findings and the spike in cases, we suggest a policy requiring visitors to have had a recent COVID-19 vaccination should have been in place to reduce cases and hospitalisations.

Abstract
AIM Increased venous thrombosis and arterial embolism rates are observed in the general population during or after COVID-19. Data regarding the kidney transplant population are scarce. In this study, we aim to investigate the thrombotic complications and risk factors associated with thrombotic complications in kidney transplant patients. METHODS This retrospective observational study included adult kidney transplant recipients diagnosed with COVID-19 between March 2020 and June 2022. The endpoint was the occurrence of thromboembolic events. RESULTS Four hundred and sixty-nine patients were followed for a median of 10.8 months after COVID-19. Forty patients (8.5%) died. Thromboembolic complications developed in 51 (11.9%) of the surviving patients. Twenty-four patients with thromboembolic events were receiving prophylactic anticoagulation before the event. The patients with mild, moderate, and severe COVID-19 were 292, 129, and 48, respectively. Patients with moderate COVID-19 had a significantly higher percentage of thromboembolic complications than patients with mild COVID-19. Older age, prior heart disease, and moderate COVID-19 were significantly associated with thromboembolic events. The incidence of thromboembolic events after COVID-19 is 10.9 per 100 patient-year. CONCLUSION Thromboembolic complications were observed at increased rates in kidney transplant recipients after COVID-19. Therefore, prospective and cohort studies for post-COVID-19 complications regarding the treatment modalities are urgently needed.

Abstract
One of the most commonly observed complications after COVID-19 is persistent pulmonary impairment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of individual factors during the acute phase of COVID-19 on subsequent pulmonary function test results. The study involved 46 patients who were admitted to hospital due to respiratory failure caused by SARS-CoV-2 and who were assessed during follow-up visits at 3 and 9 months after discharge. Patients were divided into two subgroups according to the severity of respiratory failure. The severe group included patients requiring mechanical ventilation or HFNOT. The results of the study showed that a severe course of the disease was associated with a lower FVC and a higher FEV1/FVC ratio 3 months after discharge (both p < 0.05). In addition, it has been revealed that the length of hospitalization is a factor that negatively impacts the FEV1, FVC and TLC values measured at follow-up after 3 months. Furthermore, the obtained results identify the presence of cough in the acute phase of the disease as a factor having a positive impact on several PFT parameters (especially the FEV1/FVC ratio) as well as the 6MWT outcome after 3 months. The FVC improved significantly (p < 0.05) between the follow-up visits. The findings may indicate that COVID-19-induced respiratory dysfunction is usually temporary and spontaneously resolves during recovery. Recovery is slower in those who required more intensive oxygenation. The results of this study may be useful in identifying patients who require more intensive and longer rehabilitation after COVID-19.

Abstract
Since the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the global healthcare community has faced the challenge of understanding and addressing the ongoing and multi-faceted SARS-CoV-2 infection outcomes. As millions of individuals worldwide continue to navigate the complexities of post-hospitalization recovery, reinfection rates, and the increasing prevalence of Long-COVID symptoms, comprehensive COVID-19 rehabilitation strategies are greatly needed. Previous studies have highlighted the potential synergy between exercise and nutrition, suggesting that their integration into patient rehabilitation programs may yield improved clinical outcomes for survivors of COVID-19. Our group aimed to consolidate existing knowledge following the implementation of patient, intervention, comparison, and outcome (PICO) search strategies on the distinct and combined impacts of exercise and nutrition interventions in facilitating the recovery of COVID-19 patients following hospitalization, with a specific focus on their implications for both public health and clinical practice. The incorporation of targeted nutritional strategies alongside exercise-based programs may expedite patient recovery, ultimately promoting independence in performing activities of daily living (ADLs). Nonetheless, an imperative for expanded scientific inquiry remains, particularly in the realm of combined interventions. This mini-review underscores the compelling prospects offered by an amalgamated approach, advocating for the seamless integration of exercise and nutrition as integral components of post-hospitalization COVID-19 rehabilitation. The pursuit of a comprehensive understanding of the synergistic effects and effectiveness of exercise and nutrition stands as a crucial objective in advancing patient care and refining recovery strategies in the wake of this enduring global health crisis.

Abstract
With hundreds of coronaviruses (CoVs) identified in bats that can infect humans, it is essential to understand how CoVs that affected the human population have evolved. Seven known CoVs have infected humans, of which three CoVs caused severe disease with high mortalities: severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS)-CoV emerged in 2002, Middle East respiratory syndrome-CoV in 2012, and SARS-CoV-2 in 2019. SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2 belong to the same family, follow the same receptor pathway, and use their receptor-binding domain (RBD) of spike protein to bind to the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor on the human epithelial cell surface. The sequence of the two RBDs is divergent, especially in the receptor-binding motif that directly interacts with ACE2. We probed the biophysical differences between the two RBDs in terms of their structure, stability, aggregation, and function. Since RBD is being explored as an antigen in protein subunit vaccines against CoVs, determining these biophysical properties will also aid in developing stable protein subunit vaccines. Our results show that, despite RBDs having a similar three-dimensional structure, they differ in their thermodynamic stability. RBD of SARS-CoV-2 is significantly less stable than that of SARS-CoV. Correspondingly, SARS-CoV-2 RBD shows a higher aggregation propensity. Regarding binding to ACE2, less stable SARS-CoV-2 RBD binds with a higher affinity than more stable SARS-CoV RBD. In addition, SARS-CoV-2 RBD is more homogenous in terms of its binding stoichiometry toward ACE2 compared to SARS-CoV RBD. These results indicate that SARS-CoV-2 RBD differs from SARS-CoV RBD in terms of its stability, aggregation, and function, possibly originating from the diverse receptor-binding motifs. Higher aggregation propensity and decreased stability of SARS-CoV-2 RBD warrant further optimization of protein subunit vaccines that use RBD as an antigen by inserting stabilizing mutations or formulation screening.

Abstract
In order to overcome the current LNP-mRNA delivery system's weakness of poor stability and rapid degradation by nuclease, a novel chol-CGYKK molecule and then the new phospholipid liposome were designed and prepared. A solid phase approach synthesized CGYKK and connected it to cholesterol via a disulfide linker to form the desired chol-CGYKK. Four formulated samples with different proportions of excipients were prepared by freeze-drying cationic liposomes and packaged S-mRNA. The stability test shows that after six months at 4 °C, the encapsulation rate of this novel phospholipid liposome was still approximately 90%, which would significantly improve the storage and transportation requirement. Transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy indicated that the liposomes were spherical and uniformly dispersed. On comparing the levels of mRNA protein expression of the four formulated samples, the S protein vaccine expression of formulated sample 1 was the highest. Uptake by vector cells for formulated sample 1 showed that compared to Lipo2000, and the transfection efficiency was 66.7%. Furthermore, the safety evaluation of the CGYKK and mRNA vaccine liposomes revealed no toxic effects. The in vivo study demonstrated that this novel mRNA vaccine had an immune response. However, it was still not as good as the LNP group right now, but its excellent physicochemical properties, stability, in vitro biological activity, and in vivo efficacy against SARS-CoV-2 provided new strategies for developing the next generation of mRNA delivery system.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Complementary ozone therapy has been identified as a revolutionary medical technique for a number of goals and ailments. At the present, it has been shown that ozone has medicinal qualities, such as antibacterial, antifungal, and antiparasitic properties. Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) is quickly spread over the globe. Cytokine storms and oxidative stress seem to play a substantial role in the most of acute attacks of the disease. The aim of this research was to assess the therapeutic advantages of complementary ozone therapy on the cytokine profile and antioxidant status in COVID-19 patients. METHODS The statistical sample of this study included two hundred patients with COVID-19. One hundred COVID-19 patients (treatment group) received 240 ml of the patient's blood and an equal volume of O2/O3 gas at a concentration of 35-50 μg/ml daily, which gradually increased in concentration, and were kept for 5-10 days and one hundred patients (control group) received standard treatment. The secretion levels of IL-6, TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-10 cytokines, SOD, CAT and GPx were compared between control patients (standard treatment) and standard treatment plus intervention (ozone) before and after treatment. RESULTS The findings indicated a significant decrease in the level of IL-6, TNF-α, IL-1β in group receiving complementary ozone therapy in compared with control group. Furthermore, a significant increase was found in the level of IL-10 cytokine. Moreover, SOD, CAT and GPx levels revealed a significant increase in complementary ozone therapy group compared to control group. CONCLUSIONS Our results revealed that complementary ozone therapy can be used as a medicinal complementary therapy to reduce and control inflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress status in patients with COVID-19 as revealed its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.

Abstract
The present meta-analysis investigated the clinical value of serum matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9 levels in Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients. Studies assessing the outcomes of patients with COVID-19 in correlation with the MMP-9 levels were retrieved from PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, Cochrane, WANFANG, and CNKI. A meta-analysis was performed to compare the serum MMP-9 levels between different patient groups: Severe vs. non-severe; acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) vs. non-ARDS; non-survivors vs. survivors; neurologic syndrome vs. non-neurologic syndrome; and obese diabetic vs. non-obese diabetic. A total of 2,062 COVID-19-confirmed patients from 12 studies were included in this meta-analysis. The serum MMP-9 levels were significantly higher in patients with severe COVID-19 than in those with non-severe COVID-19 [weighted mean difference (WMD) 246.61 (95% confidence interval (CI), 115.86-377.36), P<0.001]. Patients with ARDS exhibited significantly higher MMP-9 levels than those without ARDS [WMD 248.55 (95% CI, 63.84-433.25), P<0.001]. The MMP-9 levels in the non-survivors did not significantly differ from those in the survivors [WMD 37.79 (95% CI, -18.08-93.65), P=0.185]. Patients with comorbidities, including neurological syndromes, and obese diabetic patients had significantly higher MMP-9 levels than those without comorbidities [WMD 170.73 (95% CI, 95.61-245.85), P<0.001]. Serum MMP-9 levels were associated with COVID-19 severity and may serve as a therapeutic target for improving the prognosis of patients with COVID-19.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Timely differentiation of moderate COVID-19 cases from mild cases is beneficial for early treatment and saves medical resources during the pandemic. We attempted to construct a model to predict the occurrence of moderate COVID-19 through a retrospective study. METHODS In this retrospective study, clinical data from patients with COVID-19 admitted to Hainan Western Central Hospital in Danzhou, China, between August 1, 2022, and August 31, 2022, was collected, including sex, age, signs on admission, comorbidities, imaging data, post-admission treatment, length of stay, and the results of laboratory tests on admission. The patients were classified into a mild-to-moderate-type group according to WHO guidance. Factors that differed between groups were included in machine learning models such as Bernoulli Naïve Bayes (BNB), linear discriminant analysis, support vector machine (SVM), least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO), and logistic regression (LR) models. These models were compared to select the optimal model with the best predictive efficacy for moderate COVID-19. The predictive performance of the models was assessed using the area under the curve (AUC), sensitivity, specificity, and calibration plot. RESULTS A total of 231 patients with COVID-19 were included in this retrospective analysis. Among them, 152 (68.83%) were mild types, 72 (31.17%) were moderate types, and there were no patients with severe or critical types. A logistic regression model combined with age, respiratory rate (RR), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), D-dimer, and albumin was selected to predict the occurrence of moderate COVID-19. The receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) showed that AUC, sensitivity, and specificity in the model were 0.719, 0.681, and 0.635, respectively, in predicting moderate COVID-19. Calibration curve analysis revealed that the predicted probability of the model was in good agreement with the true probability. Stratified analysis showed better predictive efficacy after modeling for people aged ≤66 years (AUC = 0.7656) and a better calibration curve. CONCLUSION The LR model, combined with age, RR, D-dimer, LDH, and albumin, can predict the occurrence of moderate COVID-19 well, especially for patients aged ≤66 years.

Abstract
Background Cases of alopecia areata (AA) attributed to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination have been reported in recent literature. However, these reports are reflective of specific geographic areas, and whether this phenomenon is observed in other regions remains to be investigated. This study focused on the association between AA and COVID-19 vaccination among patients from a large single-center safety net hospital in California. Methodology In this study, using electronic health records of patients and publicly available vaccination data, the demographics of patients including age group, sex, and race along with the vaccination status were carefully reviewed. Results A total of 73 cases of AA in the period from the release of the COVID-19 vaccination on December 17, 2020, to February 10, 2023, were identified. The odds ratios (ORs) for developing AA among the vaccinated and unvaccinated for each demographic level were calculated. Among all vaccinated individuals, the OR for developing AA was 0.58 (95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.35-0.94, p-value = 0.02). Conclusions This investigation noted no apparent increase in the incidence of AA among the vaccinated population compared to the unvaccinated population.

Abstract
Background and Objectives A new type of corona virus has caused Corona virus disease-19 and, subsequently, a global pandemic. All individuals are prone to the disease, so drastic measures were taken to prevent its spread. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of COVID-19 on the progression of the antimicrobial resistance rate by comparing two periods: before and during COVID-19. Materials and Methods We used a cross-sectional design to investigate the Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) rate before (03/2019 to 03/2020) and during COVID-19 (03/2020 to 03/2021) in a University Hospital in Marrakech. The data were analyzed using SPSS Version 25.0. Results Among the 7106 specimens, there was a significant increase in the multidrug-resistant bacterial from 27.38% to 35.87% during COVID-19 (p<0.001), particularly in blood culture, cerebrospinal fluid, catheter, and pus. However, there was a non-significant change in puncture fluid, expectoration, protected distal sampling, joint fluid, stool culture, and genital sampling. A decrease in Multidrug-resistant bacteria (MDRB) was observed only in cytobacteriological urine tests (p<0.05). According to species, there was an increase in extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae, carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae, and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Conclusion In our study, it is particularly noticeable that the MDRB has increased. These results highlight the importance that the pandemic has not been able to slow the progression.

Abstract
The Coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) pandemics, caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronaviruses, SARS-CoV-2, represent an unprecedented public health challenge. Beside person-to-person contagion via airborne droplets and aerosol, which is the main SARS-CoV-2's route of transmission, alternative modes, including transmission via fomites, food and food packaging, have been investigated for their potential impact on SARS-CoV-2 diffusion. In this context, several studies have demonstrated the persistence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA and, in some cases, of infectious particles on exposed fomites, food and water samples, confirming their possible role as sources of contamination and transmission. Indeed, fomite-to-human transmission has been demonstrated in a few cases where person-to-person transmission had been excluded. In addition, recent studies supported the possibility of acquiring COVID-19 through the fecal-oro route; the occurrence of COVID-19 gastrointestinal infections, in the absence of respiratory symptoms, also opens the intriguing possibility that these cases could be directly related to the ingestion of contaminated food and water. Overall, most of the studies considered these alternative routes of transmission of low epidemiological relevance; however, it should be considered that they could play an important role, or even be prevalent, in settings characterized by different environmental and socio-economic conditions. In this review, we discuss the most recent findings regarding SARS-CoV-2 alternative transmission routes, with the aim to disclose what is known about their impact on COVID-19 spread and to stimulate research in this field, which could potentially have a great impact, especially in low-resource contexts.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ureaplasma species are common pathogens of the urogenital tract and can cause a range of diseases. Unfortunately, there is still a scarcity of large-scale and cross-sectional studies on the prevalence of Ureaplasma species in China to clarify their epidemic patterns. METHODS This study retrospectively analyzed the data of 18667 patients who visited Peking Union Medical College Hospital for showing various symptoms of (suspected) Ureaplasma species infection during the period 2013-2022. The overall prevalence of Ureaplasma species was calculated, and subgroup analyses were conducted in view of gender, age, specimen types, and diagnosis in every year within the period studied. Furthermore, previous literature that reported on the prevalence of Ureaplasma species in various regions of China was searched and summarized. RESULTS The overall positive rate of Ureaplasma species in this study reached 42.1% (7861/18667). Specifically, the prevalence of Ureaplasma species was significantly higher in female patients, while the highest detection rate was found in the 21-50 age group. From 2013 to 2022, there were no significant differences in positive rates of Ureaplasma species among years. However, the detection rate of Ureaplasma species was decreased in COVID-19 period (2020-2022) compared to pre-COVID-19 period (2017-2019). In view of the distribution of patients, outpatients predominated, but the detection rate was lower than inpatients. Urine was the most common specimen type, while cervical swabs had the highest detection rate of Ureaplasma species. When grouped by diagnosis, the highest positive rate of Ureaplasma species was seen in patients with adverse pregnancy outcomes and the lowest rate in patients with prostate disease. The previous literature, although heterogeneous, collectively suggested a high prevalence of Ureaplasma species in China. CONCLUSIONS Our study has shown that Ureaplasma species have reached a significant prevalence in China and demands adequate attention.

Abstract
Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) causes severe lower airway disease and death in a subset of patients. Knowledge on the relative contribution of programmed cell death (PCD) to lung pathology is limited to few human autopsy studies with small sample size/scope, in vitro cell culture, and experimental model systems. In this study, we sought to identify, localize, and quantify activation of apoptosis, ferroptosis, pyroptosis, and necroptosis in FFPE lung tissues from patients that died from severe SARS-CoV-2 infection (n = 28) relative to uninfected controls (n = 13). Immunofluorescence (IF) staining, whole-slide imaging, and Image J software was used to localize and quantify expression of SARS-CoV-2 nucleoprotein and the following PCD protein markers: cleaved Caspase-3, pMLKL, cleaved Gasdermin D, and CD71, respectively. IF showed differential activation of each PCD pathway in infected lungs and dichotomous staining for SARS-CoV-2 nucleoprotein enabling distinction between high (n = 9) vs low viral burden (n = 19). No differences were observed in apoptosis and ferroptosis in SARS-CoV-2 infected lungs relative to uninfected controls. However, both pyroptosis and necroptosis were significantly increased in SARS-CoV-2-infected lungs. Increased pyroptosis was observed in SARS-CoV-2 infected lungs, irrespective of viral burden, suggesting an inflammation-driven mechanism. In contrast, necroptosis exhibited a very strong positive correlation with viral burden (R2 = 0.9925), suggesting a direct SARS-CoV-2 mediated effect. These data indicate a possible novel mechanism for viral-mediated necroptosis and a potential role for both lytic programmed cell death pathways, necroptosis and pyroptosis, in mediating infection outcome.

Abstract
Although the Japanese government removed mask-wearing requirements in 2023, relatively high rates of mask wearing have continued in Japan. We aimed to assess psychological reasons and the strength of habitual mask wearing in Japan. An Internet-based cross-sectional survey was conducted with non-random participant recruitment. We explored the frequency of mask usage, investigating psychological reasons for wearing masks. A regression analysis examined the association between psychological reasons and the frequency of mask wearing. The habitual use of masks was assessed in the participant's most frequently visited indoor space and public transport using the self-report habit index. The principal component analysis with varimax rotation revealed distinct habitual characteristics. Among the 2640 participants surveyed from 6 to 9 February 2023, only 4.9% reported not wearing masks at all. Conformity to social norms was the most important reason for masks. Participants exhibited a slightly higher degree of habituation towards mask wearing on public transport compared to indoor spaces. The mask-wearing rate was higher in females than in males, and no significant difference was identified by age group. Daily mask wearing in indoor spaces was characterized by two traits (automaticity and behavioral frequency). A high mask-wearing frequency has been maintained in Japan during the social reopening transition period. Mask wearing has become a part of daily habit, especially on public transport, largely driven by automatic and frequent practice.

Abstract
COVID-19 was a worldwide emergency, leading to a global health crisis, which completely revolutionized every aspect of human life. Several strategies were adopted to limit the spreading of the infection such as testing and contact tracing, quarantine and isolation, use of face mask, social distancing, lockdowns, travel restrictions, etc. Of these, vaccines were the most important measures to reduce the transmission of the virus and the severity of the infection, in order to overcome the pandemic. Fortunately, vaccination campaign was a success, showing to be efficient in controlling and preventing the COVID-19, reducing the risk of disease progression, hospitalization, and mortality. Monitoring and addressing vaccine-related adverse events have been essential for maintaining public confidence. Indeed, with the increasing number of vaccines administered, various cutaneous reactions have been reported, making dermatologists key players in their recognition and treatment. Particularly, several cutaneous diseases and cutaneous findings have been reported. Of note, also viral reactivations have been described following COVID-19 vaccination. Among these, varicella zoster virus (VZV) reactivation has been collected. Globally, an early diagnosis and an accurate treatment of herpes zoster (HZ) is mandatory to reduce possible complications. In this context, we conducted a review of the current literature investigating cases HZ following COVID-19 vaccination with the aim of understanding the possible causal correlation and underlying pathogenetic mechanisms to offer clinicians a wide perspective on VZV reactivation and COVID-19 vaccines.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to investigate the impact of biochemical blood parameters on the progression of coronavirus disease (COVID-19). This retrospective study analyzed the clinical characteristics and biochemical test parameters of 352 COVID-19 patients treated at Malatya Training and Research Hospital in Turkey between March 3, 2021, and February 28, 2022. METHODS The methodological approach of our study included specific analyses and examinations to assess the effect of biochemical blood values on disease progression in COVID-19 patients. To achieve this aim, blood samples were collected from patients and various biochemical tests were performed. The data obtained were evaluated using statistical analyses to examine the relationship between these specific biochemical blood values and the severity of COVID-19. RESULTS High glucose, urea, alkaline phosphatase and lactate dehydrogenase levels and low albumin and potassium levels were associated with a more severe disease course. The results showed a significant link between certain biochemical blood values and the severity of COVID-19. These findings suggest that these markers may serve as valuable clinical indicators for predicting the disease progression and severity. CONCLUSION This study demonstrates the importance of monitoring and analyzing biochemical blood values as essential tools for assessing the severity and progression of COVID-19. The identified markers provide valuable information regarding the prognosis of the disease and may help healthcare professionals make informed decisions regarding patient care.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Many models for predicting various disease prognoses have achieved high performance without laboratory test results. However, whether laboratory test results can improve performance remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate whether laboratory test results improve the model performance for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). METHODS Prediction models were developed using data from the electronic healthcare record database in Japan. Patients aged ≥18 years hospitalized for COVID-19 after February 11, 2020, were included. Their age, sex, comorbidities, laboratory test results, and number of days from February 11, 2020, were collected. We developed a logistic regression, XGBOOST, random forest, and neural network analysis and compared the performance with and without laboratory test results. The performance of predicting in-hospital death was evaluated using the area under the curve (AUC). RESULTS Data from 8,288 hospitalized patients (females, 46.5%) were analyzed. The median patient age was 71 years. A total of 6,630 patients were included in the training dataset, and 312 (4.7%) died. In the logistic regression model, the area under the curve was 0.88 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.83-0.93) and 0.75 (95% CI = 0.68-0.81) with and without laboratory test results, respectively. The performance was not fundamentally different between the model types, and the laboratory test results improved the performance in all cases. The variables useful for prediction were blood urea nitrogen, albumin, and lactate dehydrogenase. CONCLUSIONS Laboratory test results, such as blood urea nitrogen, albumin, and lactate dehydrogenase levels, along with background information, helped estimate the prognosis of patients hospitalized for COVID-19.

Abstract
Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is an enveloped, plus-stranded RNA virus responsible for the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). Patients infected with COVID-19 may be asymptomatic or have symptoms ranging from mild manifestations to severe cases of the disease that could lead to death. The SARS-CoV-2 genome encodes 4 structural proteins, including the Spike protein (S), the Nucleocapsid protein (N), Membrane protein (M) and, the Envelope protein (E). The N protein forms a major component of the ribonucleoprotein complex within the virus particle and play a vital role in its transcription and replication. Nevertheless, the S protein was the most important protein in the development of vaccines against COVID-19. However, the decrease in number of registered immunizations against the disease and the rapid drop in neutralizing antibody titers together with looser preventive measures for virus transmission, favored the rapid appearance of new variants of concerns (VOCs) that primarily show mutations in the S protein. This fact makes the N protein a good candidate for the development of diagnostic tests, due to its stability, amino acid conservation, high immunogenicity, and the smaller likelihood of mutation. With the aim of developing a new diagnostic kit based on the N protein, we evaluated the humoral response in female Wistar rats against this target. Three constructions of the N protein were used to inoculate the animals: the full-length protein (Cfull), the N- (NTD), and the C-terminal (CTD) portion of the protein. The immunizations induced the animal's immune response, with specific polyclonal IgG antibodies against the Cfull protein and its fragments. There were not non-specific bind to the protein used as negative control. Anti-Cfull antibodies demonstrated high efficiency in binding to the NTD protein and the antibodies present in the anti-CTD and anti-NTD sera have recognized the Cfull protein, but they were not able to recognize the NTD and CTD proteins, respectively. Our results indicate an efficient protocol for obtaining high antibody titers against the N recombinant protein of SARS-CoV-2 and its fragments highlighting the Cfull protein, which can be used in the development of new diagnostic kits.

Abstract
A thin-layer flow cell of low internal volume (12 μL) is incorporated in a flow injection analysis (FIA) system for simultaneous and real-time photoelectrochemical (PEC) immunoassay of anti-SARS-CoV-2 spike 1 (S1) and anti-SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid (N) antibodies. Covalent linkage of S1 and N proteins to two separate polyethylene glycol (PEG)-covered gold nanoparticles (AuNPs)/TiO2 nanotube array (NTA) electrodes affords 10 consecutive analyses with surface regenerations in between. An indium tin oxide (ITO) allows visible light to impinge onto the two electrodes. The detection limits for anti-S1 and anti-N antibodies were estimated to be 177 and 97 ng mL-1, respectively. Such values compare well with those achieved with other reported methods and satisfy the requirement for screening convalescent patients with low antibody levels. Additionally, our method exhibits excellent intra-batch (RSD = 1.3%), inter-batch (RSD = 3.4%), intra-day (RSD = 1.0%), and inter-day (RSD = 1.6%) reproducibility. The obviation of an enzyme label and continuous analysis markedly decreased the assay cost and duration, rendering this method cost-effective. The excellent anti-fouling property of PEG enables accuracy validation by comparing our PEC immunoassays of patient sera to those of ELISA. In addition, the simultaneous detection of two antibodies holds great potential in disease diagnosis and immunity studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND New and emerging infectious diseases continue to represent a public health threat. Emerging infectious disease threats include pathogens increasing in range (eg, Mpox), zoonotic microbes jumping species lines to cause sustained infections in humans via person-to-person transmission (SARS-CoV-2) and multidrug-resistant pathogens (eg, Candida auris). MATERIALS AND METHODS We searched the published English literature and reviewed the selected articles on SARS-CoV-2, Mpox, and Candida auris with a focus on environmental survival, contamination of the patient's hospital environment, susceptibility of the pathogen to antiseptics and disinfectants and infection prevention recommendations. RESULTS All three pathogens (ie, SARS-CoV-2, Mpox, and Candida auris) can survive on surfaces for minutes to hours and for Mpox and C auris for days. Currently available antiseptics (eg, 70%-90% alcohol hand hygiene products) are active against SARS-CoV-2, Mpox and C auris. The U.S Environmental Protection Agency provides separate lists of surface disinfectants active against SARS-CoV-2, Mpox, and C auris. DISCUSSION The risk of environment-to-patient transmission of SARS-CoV-2, Mpox and Candida auris, is very low, low-moderate and high, respectively. In the absence of appropriate patient isolation and use of personal protection equipment, the risk of patient-to-health care provider transmission of SARS-CoV-2, Mpox, and C auris is high, moderate and low, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Appropriate patient isolation, use of personal protective equipment by health care personnel, hand hygiene, and surface disinfection can protect patients and health care personnel from acquiring SARS-CoV-2, Mpox, and C auris from infected patients.

Abstract
SARS-CoV-2 has had a measurable impact on the field of orthopedic and traumatological surgery. To date, scarce data on intramural SARS-CoV-2 infections in orthopedic and traumatological patients have been reported. Therefore, the aim of our study was to investigate the effect of nosocomial SARS-CoV-2 infections in orthopedic and traumatological inpatients regarding symptoms of infection, mortality, duration of hospitalization, and other relevant patient-dependent factors. Patients admitted to hospital for an orthopedic or traumatological indication were screened retrospectively for nosocomial SARS-CoV-2 infections and included in this study. An age-, sex-, and ICD 10-matched control group was assigned and demographic data, clinical symptoms of a SARS-CoV-2 infection as well as mortality, length of hospital stays, time to surgery, pre-existing conditions, LKF-points representing the financial effort, and the Charlson Comorbidity Index were collected. A significantly higher length of stay was observed in the SARS-CoV-2 group (25 days; 4-60; SD 12.5) when compared to the control group (11 days; 2-36; SD 7; p < 0.05). LKF points were significantly higher in the SARS-CoV-2 group (13,939 points vs. 8542 points). No significant difference in mortality could be observed. An infection with SARS-CoV-2 in inpatients significantly increases length of hospital stay and cost of treatment. Although no significant difference in mortality was found, care should be taken to avoid intramural SARS-CoV-2 infections, resulting in prolonged hospitalization, higher costs, and potentially further individual risks.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Since the first case of severe COVID-19, its effect on patients with previous interstitial lung disease (ILD) has been uncertain. We aimed to describe baseline clinical characteristics in ILD patients hospitalized by critical COVID and compare mortality during hospitalization. METHODS We studied patients with ILD with COVID-19 and a control group matched by age, 1:2 ratio with COVID-19 without previous lung disease. On admission, laboratory tests and sociodemographic variables were evaluated. We evaluated patients critically ill and compared baseline characteristics and mortality in each group. Additionally, we performed a sub-analysis of ILD patients who died versus survivors. RESULTS Forty-one patients and 82 controls were analyzed. In the group of ILD with COVID-19 there was a predominance of women (65 versus 33%: p < 0.001); lower leukocytes (9 ± 6 versus 11 ± 7, p = 0.01) and neutrophils (8 ± 5 versus 10 ± 6, p = 0.02). The most common ILD was secondary to autoimmune diseases. Patients with ILD and critical COVID-19 showed a significantly higher mortality compared with those without previous ILD (63 versus 33%, p = 0.007). Patients who died in this group had higher BMI (28 ± 6 versus 25 ± 4 kg/m2, p = 0.05), less extended hospital stay (20 ± 17 versus 36 ± 27 days, p = 0.01), and fewer days of evolution (9 ± 7 versus 16 ± 16, p = 0.05). CONCLUSIONS We found higher mortality in patients with ILD with critical COVID-19. Higher BMI and comorbidities were present in the non-survivors.
