Catalytic Carbene Insertion into C−H Bonds

Lewis acid enhanced axial ligation of [Mo2]4+ complexes

We report here the syntheses, X-ray crystal structures, electrochemistry, and density functional theory (DFT) single-point calculations of three new complexes: tetrakis(monothiosuccinimidato)dimolybdenum(II) [Mo2(SNO5)4, 1a], tetrakis(6-thioxo-2-piperidinonato)dimolybdenum(II) [Mo2(SNO6)4, 1b], and chlorotetrakis(monothiosuccinimidato)pyridinelithiumdimolybdenum(II) [pyLiMo2(SNO5)4Cl, 2-py]. X-ray crystallography shows unusually short axial Mo2-Cl bond lengths in 2-py, 2.6533(6) Å, and dimeric 2-dim, 2.644(1) Å, which we propose result from an increased Lewis acidity of the Mo2 unit in the presence of the proximal Li(+) ion. When 2-py is dissolved in MeCN, the lithium reversibly dissociates, forming an equilibrium mixture of (MeCNLiMo2(SNO5)4Cl) (2-MeCN) and [Li(MeCN)4](+)[Mo2(SNO5)4Cl](-) (3). Cyclic voltammetry was used to determine the equilibrium lithium binding constant (room temperature, K(eq) = 95 ± 1). From analysis of the temperature dependence of the equilibrium constant, thermodynamic parameters for the formation of 2-MeCN from 3 (ΔH° = -6.96 ± 0.93 kJ mol(-1) and ΔS° = 13.9 ± 3.5 J mol(-1) K(-1)) were extracted. DFT calculations indicate that Li(+) affects the Mo-Cl bond length through polarization of metal-metal bonding/antibonding molecular orbitals when lithium and chloride are added to the dimolybdenum core.

Rational design of a gold carbene precursor complex for a catalytic cyclopropanation reaction

Bridging gas- and solution-phase chemistry: A gold(I) carbene precursor complex has been developed and investigated for catalytic cyclopropanation. Formation of the carbene intermediate was first probed by mass spectrometry, followed by cyclopropanation of p-methoxystyrene in solution. The imidazolylidene leaving group serves as a base generated in situ that is necessary in the putative catalytic cycle.

A synthetic strategy for a new series of oxo-centered tricobalt complexes with mixed bridging ligands of acetate and pyrazolate anions

A new series of oxo-centered tricobalt(III, III, III) complexes, containing mixed bridges of acetate and pyrazolate anions, has been synthesized based on a strategy consisting of two stages. In the first stage, the reaction of cobalt(II) acetate tetrahydrate with pyrazole in the presence of oxidants, followed by purification with silica-gel column chromatography, afforded six tricobalt complexes: [Co(3)O(μ-OAc)(5)(μ-pz)(Hpz)(3)](PF(6)) (mono), two isomers of [Co(3)O(μ-OAc)(4)(μ-pz)(2)(Hpz)(3)](PF(6)) (bis-1 and bis-2), two isomers of [Co(3)O(μ-OAc)(3)(μ-pz)(3)(Hpz)(3)](PF(6)) (tris-2 and tris-3), and one isomer of [Co(3)O(μ-OAc)(2)(μ-pz)(4)(Hpz)(3)](PF(6)) (tetra-1). In the second stage, substitution reactions have been examined for the complexes obtained in the first stage. As a result, one acetate bridge in bis-1, bis-2, and tris-3 could be substituted with one pyrazolate site-selectively. Bis-1, bis-2, and tris-3 were converted to another isomer of [Co(3)O(μ-OAc)(3)(μ-pz)(3)(Hpz)(3)](PF(6)) (tris-1), tris-2, and tetra-1, respectively. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies found that in every complex acetato and pyrazolato work as bridging ligands, while pyrazole (Hpz) acts as a terminal ligand. Moreover, the electrochemical properties of the seven new tricobalt complexes (mono, bis-1, bis-2, tris-1, tris-2, tris-3, and tetra-1) were investigated by cyclic voltammetry and it was found that (1) each complex shows reversible redox behaviour corresponding to the Co(III)Co(III)Co(III)/Co(III)Co(III)Co(IV) couple and (2) the redox potential decreases from 1.21 V vs. Fc/Fc(+) in mono to 1.09 V vs. Fc/Fc(+) in tetra-1, as the number of pyrazolate bridges increases.

Vinylogous reactivity of enol diazoacetates with donor-acceptor substituted hydrazones. Synthesis of substituted pyrazole derivatives

A regiospecific synthesis of multifunctional pyrazoleshas been developed from a cascade process triggered by Rh(II)-catalyzed dinitrogen extrusion from enol diazoacetates with vinylogous nucleophilic addition followed by Lewis acid catalyzed cyclization and aromatization.

(2aR*,5S*,6aS*,8aS*,E)-Ethyl 5-hydroxy-7,7,8a-trimethyl-8-oxo-2,2a,6,6a,7,8,8a,8b-octahydro-1H-pentaleno[1,6-bc]oxepine-4-carboxylate

The title compound, C₁₇H₂₄O₅, featuring a 2-carbeth­oxy-3-oxepanone unit in its intra­molecularly O—H⋯O hydrogen-bonded enol form, was obtained via [(CF₃CO₂)₂Rh]₂-catal­ysed intra­molecular O—H bond insertion in the α-diazo-ω-hy­droxy-β-ketoester, ethyl 4-[(1S,3aS,6R,6aS)-6-hy­droxy-2,2,3a-trimethyl-3-oxo-octa­hydro­penta­len-1-yl]-2-diazo-3-oxobutano­ate. The seven-membered oxacyclic ring, thus constructed on a cis-fused diquinane platform, was found to adopt a distorted boat–sofa conformation.

Capturing fleeting intermediates in a catalytic C-H amination reaction cycle

We have applied an ambient ionization technique, desorption electrospray ionization MS, to identify transient reactive species of an archetypal C-H amination reaction catalyzed by a dirhodium tetracarboxylate complex. Using this analytical method, we have detected previously proposed short-lived reaction intermediates, including two nitrenoid complexes that differ in oxidation state. Our findings suggest that an Rh-nitrene oxidant can react with hydrocarbon substrates through a hydrogen atom abstraction pathway and raise the intriguing possibility that two catalytic C-H amination pathways may be operative in a typical bulk solution reaction. As highlighted by these results, desorption electrospray ionization MS should have broad applicability for the mechanistic study of catalytic processes.

Synthesis of bridged polycyclic ring systems via carbene cascades terminating in C-H bond insertion

A carbene cascade reaction that constructs functionalized bridged bicyclic systems from alkynyl diazoesters is presented. The cascade proceeds through diazo decomposition, carbene/alkyne metathesis, and C-H bond insertion. The diazoesters are easily synthesized from cyclic ketones. Substrate ring size and substitution patterns control the connectivity and diastereomeric preference found in the products.

Dirhodium carboxylates catalyzed enantioselective coupling reactions of α-diazophosphonates, anilines, and electron-deficient aldehydes

Chiral dirhodium carboxylate complexes ([Rh(2)(S-PTAD)(4)] or [Rh(2)(S-PTTL)(4)]) efficiently catalyze asymmetric three-component coupling reactions of α-diazophosphonates, anilines, and electron-deficient aldehydes to give α-amino-β-hydroxyphosphonates. The high level of enantiocontrol provides evidence for the intermediacy of metal-bound ammonium ylide in the product-forming step.

Synthesis of ionic liquid-supported sulfonyl azide and its application in diazotransfer reaction

The paper describes synthesis of a novel ionic liquid-supported sulfonyl azide and its applications as diazotransfer reagent of active methylene compounds as well as deformylative diazo transfer reagent. The diazo compounds were isolated in excellent yields (82-94%) and high purity. The method offers better separation of product and reagent. This method is experimentally simple and mild, and requires very short reaction time.

Efficient multicomponent strategy to pentacyclic pyrazole-fused naphtho[1,8-fg]isoquinolines through cleavage of two carbon-carbon bonds

Multicomponent reactions of acenaphthylene-1,2-dione with diaroylmethanes and electron-rich pyrazol-5-amines have been discovered. A series of new and polyfunctionalized pentacyclic pyrazole-fused naphtho[1,8-fg]isoquinolines were regioselectively synthesized. The reactions were easy to perform simply by mixing three common reactants in AcOH. During these reaction processes, the insertion of active methylene of diaroylmethane into the sp(2)-sp(2) C-C bond of the cyclohexa-2,5-dienone ring was readily achieved and two C-C bonds were cleaved under transition-metal-free conditions.

Scope and mechanistic analysis of the enantioselective synthesis of allenes by rhodium-catalyzed tandem ylide formation/[2,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement between donor/acceptor carbenoids and propargylic alcohols

Rhodium-catalyzed reactions of tertiary propargylic alcohols with methyl aryl- and styryldiazoacetates result in tandem reactions, consisting of oxonium ylide formation followed by [2,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement. This process competes favorably with the standard O-H insertion reaction of carbenoids. The resulting allenes are produced with high enantioselectivity (88-98% ee) when the reaction is catalyzed by the dirhodium tetraprolinate complex, Rh(2)(S-DOSP)(4). Kinetic resolution is possible when racemic tertiary propargylic alcohols are used as substrates. Under the kinetic resolution conditions, the allenes are formed with good diastereoselectivity and enantioselectivity (up to 6.1:1 dr, 88-93% ee), and the unreacted alcohols are enantioenriched to 65-95% ee. Computational studies reveal that the high asymmetric induction is obtained via an organized transition state involving a two-point attachment: ylide formation between the alcohol oxygen and the carbenoid and hydrogen bonding of the alcohol to a carboxylate ligand. The 2,3-sigmatropic rearrangement proceeds through initial cleavage of the O-H bond to generate an intermediate with close-lying open-shell singlet, triplet, and closed-shell singlet electronic states. This intermediate would have significant diradical character, which is consistent with the observation that the 2,3-sigmatropic rearrangement is favored with donor/acceptor carbenoids and more highly functionalized propargylic alcohols.

Arylation of rhodium(II) azavinyl carbenes with boronic acids

A highly efficient and stereoselective arylation of in situ-generated azavinyl carbenes affording 2,2-diaryl enamines at ambient temperatures has been developed. These transition-metal carbenes are directly produced from readily available and stable 1-sulfonyl-1,2,3-triazoles in the presence of a rhodium carboxylate catalyst. In several cases, the enamines generated in this reaction can be cyclized into substituted indoles employing copper catalysis.
