Abstract
Branched polyolefin microstructures resulting from so-called "chain walking" are a fascinating feature of late transition metal catalysts; however, to date it has not been demonstrated how desirable branched polyolefin microstructures can be generated thereby. We demonstrate how highly branched polyethylenes with methyl branches (220 Me/1000 C) exclusively and very high molecular weights (ca. 106 g mol-1 ), reaching the branch density and microstructure of commercial ethylene-propylene elastomers, can be generated from ethylene alone. At the same time, polar groups on the main chain can be generated by in-chain incorporation of methyl acrylate. Key to this strategy is a novel rigid environment in an α-diimine PdII catalyst with a steric constraint that allows for excessive chain walking and branching, but restricts branch formation to methyl branches, hinders chain transfer to afford a living polymerization, and inverts the regioselectivity of acrylate insertion to a 1,2-mode.

Abstract
Small amounts of in-chain keto groups render polyethylene (PE) photodegradable, a desirable feature in view of environmental plastics pollution. Free-radical copolymerization of CO and ethylene is challenging due to the formation of stable acyl radicals which hinders further chain growth. Here, we report that copolymerization to polyethylenes with desirable low ketone content is enabled in dimethyl carbonate organic solvent or under aqueous conditions at comparatively moderate pressures <350 atm that compare favorable to typical ethylene polymerization at 2000 atm. Hereby, thermoplastic processable materials can be obtained as demonstrated by injection molding and tensile testing. Colloidally stable dipersions from aqueous polymerizations form continuous thin films upon drying at ambient conditions. Extensive spectroscopic investigation including 13C labeling provides an understanding of the branching microstructures associated with keto groups. Exposure of injection molded materials or thin films to simulated sunlight under sea-like conditions results in photodegradation.

Abstract
Mechanistic studies in homogeneous catalysis through the solution transition metal K Edge XANES (X-ray absorption near-edge structure) and EXAFS (Extended X-ray absorption fine structure) analysis for vanadium and titanium complex catalysts for ethylene polymerisation/dimerization, and syndiospecific styrene polymerisation, including interpretation of the XANES spectra, have been introduced. The core excitation spectra of the complexes based on the time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) can be used to interpret the Ti and V K-edge features and to extract information on the electronic structure from the XANES spectra. Theoretical calculations and experimental XAS analysis should have great potential for analysing the active species.

Abstract
The polyolefin industry is dominated by gas-phase and slurry-phase polymerization using heterogeneous catalysts. In contrast, academic research is focused on homogeneous systems, especially for late-transition-metal catalysts. The heterogenization of homogeneous catalysts is a general strategy to provide catalyst solutions for existing industrial polyolefin synthesis. Herein, we report an alternative, potentially general strategy for using homogeneous late-transition-metal catalysts in gas-phase and slurry-phase polymerization. In this self-supporting strategy, catalysts with moderate chain-walking capabilities produced porous polymer supports during gas-phase ethylene polymerization. Chain walking, in which the metal center can move up and down the polymer chain during polymerization, ensures that the metal center can travel along the polymer chain to find suitable sites for ethylene enchainment. This strategy enables simple heterogenization of catalysts on solid supports for slurry-phase polymerization. Most importantly, various branched ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylenes can be prepared under various polymerization conditions with proper catalyst selection.

Abstract
Coordination catalysis is a highly efficient alternative to more traditional acid catalysis in the oligomerization of α-olefins. The distinct advantage of transition metal-based catalysts is the structural homogeneity of the oligomers. Given the great diversity of the catalysts and option of varying the reaction conditions, a wide spectrum of processes can be implemented. In recent years, both methylenealkanes (vinylidene dimers of α-olefins) and structurally uniform oligomers with the desired degrees of polymerization have become available for later use in the synthesis of amphiphilic organic compounds and polymers, high-quality oils or lubricants, and other prospective materials. In the present review, we discussed the selective dimerization and oligomerization of α-olefins, catalyzed by metallocene and post-metallocene complexes, and explored the prospects for the further applications of the coordination α-olefin dimers and oligomers.

Abstract
The established model cluster (AlOMe)16(AlMe3)6 for methylaluminoxane (MAO) cocatalyst has been studied by density functional theory, aiming to rationalize the different behaviors of unmodified MAO and TMA-depleted MAO/BHT (TMA = trimethylaluminum; BHT = 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol), highlighted in previous experimental studies. The tendency of the three model Lewis acidic sites A-C to release neutral Al fragments (i.e., AlMe2R; R = Me or bht) or transient aluminum cations (i.e., [AlMeR]+) has been investigated both in the absence and in the presence of neutral N-donors. Sites C are most likely responsible for the activation capabilities of TMA-rich MAO, but TMA depletion destabilizes them, possibly inducing structural rearrangements. The remaining sites A and B, albeit of lower Lewis acidity, should be still able to release cationic Al fragments when TMA-depleted modified MAOs are treated with N-donors (e.g. [AlMe(bht)]+ from MAO/BHT). These findings provide tentative interpretations for earlier observations of donor-dependent ionization tendencies of MAO and MAO/BHT and how TMA depleted MAOs can still be potent activators.

Abstract
Polypropylene (PP) is one of the most widely used polymers. In this paper, three types of PPs including random PP, impact PP, and impact PP with high clarity, were prepared through a 75 kg/h pilot-scale Spheripol II process. The three produced PPs were produced by the selection or combination the two loops and gas phase reactor and controlling the comonomer and hydrogen concentrations. The three prepared PPs then were pelleted with the clarified nucleating agent NX 8000 and tested for mechanical, thermal, and optical properties. Their molecular structures and rubber phase size were also investigated by GPC, 13C NMR, temperature rising elution fractionation (TREF), XRD, SEM analysis, etc. The results showed that the random PP (PP-1) and the impact PP with high clarity (PP-3) obtained excellent optical transparency with a haze of 12.5% and 13.5% due to their small rubber phase size (roughly ≤ 100 nm), while the impact PP (PP-2) obtained bad transparency with a haze of 98.8% due to the large rubber phase size (about 1 μm) caused by the poor thermal compatibility with the PP matrix. The rubber phase content and ethylene/propylene sequence distributions of the three PPs varied much and resulted in different impact strengths and stiffness properties. PP-2 had a high impact strength of 14.5 kJ/m2 due to the rubber phase generated in the gas phase reactor. Except for the optical transparency, PP-3 gained stiffness and toughness, with 914 MPa of flexural modulus and 25.1 kJ/m2 of impact strength due to the unique molecular structure of its rubber phase.

Abstract
The development of high-performance transition metal catalysts has long been a major driving force in academic and industrial polyolefin research. Late transition metal-based olefin polymerization catalysts possess many unique properties, such as the ability to generate variously branched polyolefins using only ethylene as the feedstock and the capability of incorporating polar functionalized comonomers without protecting agents. Here we report the synthesis and (co)polymerization studies of a simple but extremely versatile α-imino-ketone nickel system. This type of catalyst is easy to synthesize and modify, and it is thermally stable and highly active during ethylene polymerization without the addition of any cocatalysts. Despite the sterically open nature, these catalysts can generate branched Ultra-High-Molecular-Weight polyethylene and copolymerize ethylene with a series of polar comonomers. The versatility of this platform has been further demonstrated through the synthesis of a dinuclear nickel catalyst and the installation of an anchor for catalyst heterogenization.

The influences of electronic effect and isomerization of salalen titanium(iv) complexes on ethylene polymerization in the presence of methylaluminoxane. RSC Adv 2019; 9:41824-41831. Abstract
Herein, two salalen titanium(iv) complexes were synthesized and characterized. These complexes coexisted as two isomers in certain conditions and underwent isomerization, as evidenced by 1H NMR spectroscopy. Furthermore, the molar ratio of the two isomers ranged from 100 : 15 at 30 °C to 100 : 34 at 120 °C, driven by thermal energy, based on variable temperature 1H NMR characterization. Both complexes were employed as catalysts for ethylene polymerization in the presence of methylaluminoxane (MAO). The influence of the electronic effects of different substituent groups at the ortho position of the phenolate on ethylene polymerization behaviors, molecular weight and molecular weight distributions of the resulting polyethylene was investigated. The fluorinated salalen titanium(iv) complex revealed relatively high catalytic activity and thermal stability owing to the electron-withdrawing inductive effect. Moreover, disentangled linear polyethylene with ultrahigh molecular weight (M w up to 3000 kDa) and narrow molecular weight distribution (M w/M n ∼ 2) was obtained in the polymerization temperature range of 30 °C to 50 °C.

Abstract
Functionalized aluminum alkyls enable effective coordinative chain transfer polymerization with selective chain initiation by the functionalized alkyl. (ω-Aminoalkyl)diisobutylaluminum reagents (12 examples studied) obtained by hydroalumination of α-amino-ω-enes with diisobutylaluminum hydride promote the stereoselective catalytic chain growth of butadiene on aluminum in the presence of Nd(versatate)3 , Cp*2 Nd(allyl), or Cp*2 Gd(allyl) precatalysts and [PhNMe2 H+ ]/[B(C6 F5 )4 - ]. Carbazolyl- and indolylaluminum reagents result in efficient molecular weight control and chain initiation by the aminoalkyl rather than the isobutyl substituent bound to aluminum. As confirmed for (3-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)propyl)-initiated polybutadiene (PBD), for example, by deuterium quenching studies, polymer chain transfer by β-hydride transfer is negligible in comparison to back-transfer to aluminum.

Abstract
Polyolefin is the most widely used and versatile commodity polymer. In this work, three types of polyolefin-based elastomers (PBEs) were adopted to toughen a high-flow polypropylene to improve its overall performance. The chain microstructures of these PBEs, including ethylene/1-octene (E/O) random copolymer from Dow Chemical′s polyolefin elastomer (POE), olefin block copolymers (OBCs) of E/O from Dow, and ethylene/propylene random copolymer from ExxonMobil’s propylene-based elastomer, were elucidated by GPC, 13C NMR, TREF, and DSC techniques. The mechanical, thermal and optical properties, and morphology analysis of the PP/PBE blends were also studied to investigate the toughening mechanism of these PBEs. The results showed that all three types of PBEs can effectively improve the Izod impact strength of the PP/PBE blends by the addition of the rubber compositions, at the cost of the stiffness. PBE-1 and PBE-2 were found to have a great stiffness–toughness balance with about 1700 MPa of flexural modulus, about 110 °C of HDT and 3.6 kJ/m2 of impact strength on the prepared PP/PBE blends by forming separated rubber phase and refined spherulite crystals. As a result, the OBC with alternating hard and soft segments could achieve a similar toughening effect as the E/P random copolymer. Surprisingly, no obvious rubber phase separation was observed in the PP/PBE-4 blend, which might be due to the good compatibility of the E/P random chains with the isotactic PP; therefore, the PP/PBE blend obtains great toughness performance and optical transparency with the highest Izod impact strength of 4.2 kJ/m2 and excellent transparency.

Abstract
Indolyl is the anionic species obtained from the deprotonation of the N-H group of indole. Group 4 transition-metal complexes that carry indolyl-based polydentate ligands represent promising homogeneous catalysts for, e.g., olefin polymerization, hydroamination, and nitrogen-fixation reactions due to the weak π-donation and electron-withdrawing properties, as well as the low basicity of indolyl. In this study, we systematically investigated the synthesis and structures of titanium and zirconium complexes that carry deprotonated 2,2'-bis(indolyl)methane ligands (henceforth: bis(indolyl) ligands) and two diethylamido ligands. We found that the coordination geometry of the indolyl nitrogen atom in such bis(indolyl) ligands is affected by the steric impact of the substituents attached to the central aromatic ring. Moreover, we examined the dynamics of such bis(indolyl) ligands in solution for the corresponding zirconium complexes, and the mechanism was discussed in conjunction with DFT calculations. The results of this study suggest that bis(indolyl) ligands may also serve as coordinatively flexible ancillary ligands, and indicate the feasibility of an expansion from bis(indolyl) to bis(indolyl)-donor ligands.

Abstract
(Arylimido)vanadium(V) dichloride complexes containing anionic N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands that contain weakly coordinating B(C6F5)3 moieties (WCA-NHC) of the type [V(NAr)Cl2(WCA-NHC-Ar')] (5, Ar = 2,6-Me2C6H3, Ar' = 2,6- i Pr2C6H3) showed significant catalytic activity for ethylene polymerization in the presence of Al cocatalysts (MAO and Al i Bu3); the activity by the 5-MAO catalyst (19 500 kg-PE/mol-V·h; TOF 11 600 min-1) is the highest among those reported using the other (imido)vanadium(V) complexes in the presence of MAO, and the 5-Al i Bu3 catalyst showed higher activity (66 000 kg-PE/mol-V·h; TOF 39 200 min-1). The V K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) analyses (in toluene) strongly suggest the formation of certain vanadium(III) species by reduction with Al i Bu3 accompanying structural changes; the EXAFS analysis suggests the presence of the arylimido ligand and one V-Cl bond (2.34 ± 0.04 Å), which is longer than those [2.1901(8)-2.2462(8) Å] in the reported (imido)vanadium(V) complexes. The XANES analysis of [V(NAr)Cl2(OAr)] strongly suggests the formation of the other vanadium(III) species by reduction with Me2AlCl or Et2AlCl, and the EXAFS analysis suggests the presence of the arylimido ligand and two V-Cl bonds (2.45 ± 0.03 Å). The XANES spectra showed no significant changes in both the pre-edge peak(s) and the edge peak when these complexes were treated with MAO, suggesting that the basic geometry and the high oxidation state were preserved under these conditions.
