Heavy metals in drinking water: Occurrences, implications, and future needs in developing countries

Understanding socio-economic inequalities in the prevalence of asthma in India: an evidence from national sample survey 2017-18

Background

Today, over 300 million people reside with asthma worldwide and India alone is home for 6% of children and 2% of adults suffering from this chronic disease. A common notion of disparity persists in terms of health outcomes across the poor and better-off section of the society. Thus, there is a need to explore socio-economic inequality in the contribution of various factors associated with asthma prevalence in India.

Methods

Data for the study were carved out from the 75th round of National Sample Survey (NSS), collected by the National Sample Survey Organization (NSSO) during 2017–18. The sample size for this study was 555,289 individuals, for which data was used for the analysis. Descriptive statistics were used to show the distribution of the study population. Further, bivariate and multivariate analysis was performed to identify the factors associated with Asthma prevalence. The concentration index was used to measure the inequality. Further, we used decomposition analysis to find the contribution of factors responsible for socio-economic status-related inequality in asthma prevalence.

Results

The prevalence of asthma was 2 per 1000 in the whole population; however, the prevalence differs by age groups in a significant manner. Age, sex, educational status, place of residence, cooking fuel, source of drinking water, household size and garbage disposal facility were significantly associated with asthma prevalence in India. It was found that asthma was more concentrated among individuals from higher socioeconomic status (concentration index: 0.15; p < 0.05). While exploring socio-economic inequality for asthma, richest wealth status (53.9%) was the most significant contributor in explaining the majority of the inequality followed by the urban place of residence (37.9%) and individual from age group 45–65 years (33.3%). Additionally, individual aged 65 years and above (27.9%) and household size less than four members (14.7%) contributed in explaining socio-economic inequality for asthma.

Conclusion

Due to the heterogeneous nature of asthma, associations between different socio-economic indicators and asthma can be complex and may point in different directions. Hence, considering the concentration of asthma prevalence in vulnerable populations and its long-term effect on general health, a comprehensive programme to tackle chronic respiratory diseases and asthma, in particular, is urgently needed.

Recent Progress in the Application of Hydroxyapatite for the Adsorption of Heavy Metals from Water Matrices

Wastewater treatment remains a critical issue globally, despite various technological advancements and breakthroughs. The study of different materials and technologies gained new valences in the last years, in order to obtain cheap and efficient processes, to obtain a cleaner environment for future generations. In this context, the present review paper presents the new achievements in the materials domain with highlights on apatitic materials used for decontamination of water loaded with heavy metals. The main goal of this review is to present the adsorptive removal of heavy metals using hydroxyapatite-based adsorbents, offering a general overview regarding the recent progress in this particular area. Developing the current review, an attempt has been made to give appropriate recognition to the most recent data regarding the synthesis methods and targeted pollutants, including important information regarding the synthesis methods and precursors, morphological characteristics of the adsorbent materials and effectiveness of processes.

Efficient Removal of Pb(II) from Aqueous Systems Using Spirulina-Based Biohybrid Magnetic Helical Microrobots

Wastewater remediation toward heavy metal pollutants has attracted considerable attention, and various adsorption-based materials were employed in recent years. However, it is still challenging to explore low-cost and high-efficient adsorbents with superior removal performance, nontoxicity, flexible operation, and good reusability. Herein, Fe3O4- and MnO2-loaded biohybrid magnetic helical microrobots (BMHMs) based on Spirulina cells were presented for the first time, and their performance on Pb(II) removal was studied in detail. Intracellular synthesis of Fe3O4 and MnO2 nanoparticles into Spirulina cells was successively conducted to obtain the BMHMs with superparamagnetism and high surface activity. The BMHMs could be flexibly propelled under magnetic actuation, and collective cork-screw spinning was performed to enhance fluidic diffusion with intensive adsorption. Rapid and significant removal of Pb(II) in wastewater was achieved using the swarming microrobots, and a high adsorption capacity could be reached at 245.1 mg/g. Moreover, the BMHMs could be cyclically reutilized after simple regeneration, and good specificity toward Pb(II) was verified. The adsorption mechanism was further studied, which revealed that the pseudo-second-order kinetics dominated in the adsorption process, and the Langmuir isothermal model also fitted the experimental results well. The intriguing properties of the BMHMs enable them to be versatile platforms with significant potentials in wastewater remediation.

Heavy metal concentrations in rivers and drinking water of Esmeraldas (Ecuador) under an intermittent water supply service

Universal access to safe water is a major global goal, but these efforts could be at stake because drinking water sources are becoming polluted in many developing countries. Chlorine, major ions, and heavy metals were measured in rivers and drinking water of Esmeraldas because potential pollution sources raise concerns about the quality of the water supply, and because users have developed strategies to cope with water shortages including collecting river water and water distributed by tankers, storing water at home, and consuming commercial bottled water. We sampled water from the water distribution system (WDS) and the Esmeraldas and Teaone rivers including the intake to the potabilization plant, water distributed by tankers, and commercial bottled water. Most of the samples collected from the Esmeraldas and Teaone rivers, the WDS, and tankers complied with drinking water standards, but higher concentration of cadmium and other metals in the eastern part of the city is an indication of corrosion inside the WDS. Commercial bottled and WDS water showed similar heavy metal concentrations, but regular consumption of some brands may lead to higher exposure to arsenic and mineral deficiencies. Chlorine concentrations in the water supplied by the WDS were below the values required for safe disinfection, and in-house chlorination is uncommon in the city. Strengthening pollution control in the Esmeraldas river, monitoring corrosion of the WDS, and promoting point-use chlorination and better water handling practices are required to secure a safer water supply in the long term.

A pilot study on the feasibility of testing residential tap water in North Carolina: implications for environmental justice and health

BACKGROUND

In 2015 alone, community water systems serving about 21 million Americans violated the United States Environmental Protection Agency's (US-EPA) water quality standards. While water at community treatment and distribution centers is regularly monitored and tested, little is known about pollutants in the water systems at the household level.

AIMS

This pilot study assessed the feasibility of (1) testing for the presence and concentration of 14 contaminants and physicochemical parameters in household tap water in a low-income neighborhood and (2) using community engagement for recruitment and citizen science approaches to data collection.

METHODS

We used a multistage approach that included geo-mapping to delineate testing sites, community engagement for recruitment and citizen science approaches to increase the response rate. We used a 14-in-one dipstick test designed to measure trace amounts of heavy metals, non-metallic elements, and physicochemical water properties in drinking water in a sample of 70 homes.

RESULTS

In 50%, 25%, and 7% of water samples tested, the concentration of mercury, lead, and chromium, respectively, were higher than US-EPA drinking water standards. Citizen science approaches were effective for increasing response rates and low-income household participation in water quality testing.

SIGNIFICANCE

The overlap between poverty, older homes, and high concentrations of potentially toxic metals in drinking water presents concerns for community health. Our pilot community engagement and citizen science approaches are likely scalable and would be of benefit to both the scientific community and to municipalities with constrained budgets. Future studies may examine the role of the principles of environmental justice in the distribution and prevalence of toxic elements in drinking water.

Simultaneous removal of Cd (II), Ni (II), and Pb (II) from water by a submerged macrophyte pondweed (Potamogeton malaianus)

The current work investigated the potential of submerged macrophyte pondweed (Potamogeton malaianus) in treating cadmium, nickel, and lead-contaminated water through phytoremediation. The adsorption for the three metal ions occurred rapidly within 2 h and attained dynamic equilibrium in no more than 72 h. The removal efficiencies of Cd (II), Ni (II), and Pb (II) were high, passing 94% in both single- and multi-metal systems. The kinetic adsorption curves of Cd (II), Ni (II), and Pb (II) were fitted well by both pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetics (R²  = 0.9875-0.9995). The equilibrium adsorption capacities of Cd (II), Ni (II), and Pb (II) for P. malaianus were 6.29-6.97 mg kg^-1 . In plants, the higher concentration of each metal ions was accumulated in leaves (12.44-38.15 mg kg^-1 ) than in roots (10.32-26.10 mg kg^-1 ). The chlorophyll contents increased from 0.69 to 0.89-1.00 mg g^-1 under the treatment of Cd (II), Ni (II), and Pb (II), whereas the chlorophyll a/b ratio was kept constant. There was no significant difference between single- and multi-metal systems. FT-IR spectra showed that COH and C═N might be involved in the adsorption of Cd (II), Ni (II), and Pb (II). This study demonstrated that P. malaianus could be a suitable submerged macrophyte for the simultaneous removal of Cd (II), Ni (II), and Pb (II) from water.

Pharmaceuticals, pesticides and metals/metalloids in Lake Guaíba in Southern Brazil: Spatial and temporal evaluation and a chemometrics approach

Compiling and reporting data related to the presence of pharmaceuticals and pesticides are crucial means of assessing the risk those chemicals pose to human health and environment. Data sets from different sources were combined using a data fusion approach to produce a spatial and temporal variation of contaminants presents in water from Lake Guaíba (29°55'-30°24' S; 51°01'-51°20' W). Lake Guaíba is a 496 km² water body situated in the geological depression of Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil; that is fed by several rivers from the metropolitan area, the 5th largest metro area in Brazil, with approximately 5 million inhabitants. Analytical methodology to quantify pharmaceuticals and pesticides by LC-QTOF-MS and GC-MS/MS was validated for 41 pharmaceutical and 62 pesticides. Furthermore, 27 chemical elements were analyzed by ICP-MS, and physical chemical parameters were determined using established methodologies. All validation parameters were in accordance with the National Institute of Metrology, Standardization, and Industrial Quality. Thirty-five water samples were analyzed from January to August 2019, and 15 pharmaceuticals and 25 pesticides were present in concentrations ranging from 6.00 ng L^-1 to 580.00 ng L^-1. Twenty-seven elements were analyzed during the same period, and 18 were present in concentrations ranging from 0.2 μg L^-1 to 7060 μg L^-1. Samples were tagged according to the points and months of collection to identify temporal and spatial patterns. The main findings show that the compounds are distributed throughout the studied area without an apparent regular pattern, suggesting that events in a specific point affect the entire ecosystem. Conversely, temporal variations were well defined, as samples were grouped according to the climatic conditions of the months of collection. Considering the calculated quotient risks, atrazine, cyproconazole, diuron, and simazine showed the highest risk levels for algae; acetaminophen, diclofenac, and ibuprofen showed the highest risk levels for aquatics invertebrates.

Single-Use Fluidic Electrochemical Paper-Based Analytical Devices Fabricated by Pen Plotting and Screen-Printing for On-Site Rapid Voltammetric Monitoring of Pb(II) and Cd(II)

This work reports the fabrication of integrated electrochemical fluidic paper-based analytical devices (ePADs) using a marker pen drawing and screen-printing. Electrodes were deposited on paper using screen-printing with conductive carbon ink. Then, the desired fluidic patterns were formed on the paper substrate by drawing with a commercial hydrophobic marker pen using an inexpensive computer-controlled x-y plotter. The working electrode was characterized by cyclic voltammetry and scanning electron microscopy. The analytical utility of the electrochemical PADs is demonstrated through electrochemical determination of Pb(II) and Cd(II) by anodic stripping voltammetry. For this purpose, the sample was mixed with a buffer solution and a Bi(III) solution, applied to the test zone of the PAD, the metals were preconcentrated as a bismuth alloy on the electrode surface and oxidized by applying an anodic potential scan. The proposed manufacturing approach enables the large-scale fabrication of fit-for-purpose disposable PADs at low cost which can be used for rapid on-site environmental monitoring.

Evidence of Resistance of Heavy Metals from Bacteria Isolated from Natural Waters of a Mining Area in Mexico

This study focuses on identifying relationships between the content of heavy metals in water and the resistance patterns of different bacteria. Samples from watercourses in one of the most important mining areas in Mexico were collected. Seventy-one bacteria were isolated, and their resistance to Cr, Zn, Cu, Ag, Hg, and Co was studied. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration range was determined, and a Multiple Metal Resistant index was calculated. After that, 11 isolated bacteria were chosen to estimate kinetic parameters. The obtained results show differences in the behavior of the studied bacteria concerning the presence of heavy metals in the media: (1) without effect, (2) inhibited growth; and (3) considerable inhibited growth. Finally, a Performance Index was proposed to select adequate bacteria for heavy metals removal; five bacteria were selected. Among them, Pseudomonas koreensis was identified as a good candidate for a future biosorption system since these bacteria can stimulate growth in the presence of all the metals tested.

Improving the predictive value of bioaccessibility assays and their use to provide mechanistic insights into bioavailability for toxic metals/metalloids - A research prospectus

Widespread contamination of soil, dust, and food with toxic metal(loid)s pose a significant public health concern. Only a portion of orally ingested metal(loid) contaminants are bioavailable, which is defined as the fraction of ingested metal(loid)s absorbed across the gastrointestinal barrier and into systemic circulation. Bioaccessibility tools are a class of in vitro assays used as a surrogate to estimate risk of oral exposure and bioavailability. Although development and use of bioaccessibility tools have contributed to our understanding of the factors influencing oral bioavailability of metal(loid)s, some of these assays may lack data that support their use in decisions concerning adverse health risks and soil remediation. This review discusses the factors known to influence bioaccessibility of metal(loid) contaminants and evaluates experimental approaches and key findings of SW-846 Test Method 1340, Unified BARGE Method, Simulated Human Intestinal Microbial Ecosystem, Solubility Bioaccessibility Research Consortium assay, In Vitro Gastrointestinal model, TNO-Gastrointestinal Model, and Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment bioaccessibility models which are used to assess oral absolute bioavailability and relative bioavailability in solid matrices. The aim of this review was to identify emerging knowledge gaps and research needs with an emphasis on research required to evaluate these models on (1) standardization of assay techniques and methodology, and (2) use of common criteria for assessing the performance of bioaccessibility models.

Spatial variation, water quality, and health risk assessment of trace elements in groundwater in Beijing and Shijiazhuang, North China Plain

Metal(loid)s pollution of groundwater in northern China is of great concern due to the increasing shortage of fresh water resources. In the present study, total 159 of groundwater samples were collected from the Miyun-Huairou-Shunyi (MHS) districts in Beijing city and the Hutuo River Plain (HRP) in Shijiazhuang city. Nineteen trace elements dissolved in groundwater were measured. Results showed that Al (12.3 %), Mn (5.3%), Zn (1.8%), As (1.8%), and Pb (1.8%) in the MHS samples, and Mn (2.2%) in the HRP samples exceeded their standard threshold of WHO and China. Exceedance of trace elements was attributed to both geochemical background and local human activities. Human health risk assessment showed that local consumers were exposed at a low level of health risk, except in specific area with a high level of arsenic. Elements of arsenic and chromium were important risk contributors in the two regions. The risk of oral exposure was greater than that of skin uptake. Children were more susceptible to non-carcinogenic risk and less to carcinogenic risk than adults. A Nemerow index and CRITIC-weighted WQI were applied to classify groundwater quality. The results from the two methods were comparable to a large extend. More population living in plain rather than mountain resulted in a gradual deterioration trend of groundwater quality from mountain to plain. The samples with poor water quality were almost collected in the area with heavy industrial and agricultural activities. The CRITIC-weighted WQI was recommended for groundwater quality assessment. A simple classification criterion was reformulated based on the MHS hazard index analysis. The groundwaters in the two research fields were not seriously polluted, but potential risks should not be ignored.

Porous Co3O4 nanodisks as robust peroxidase mimetics in an ultrasensitive colorimetric sensor for the rapid detection of multiple heavy metal residues in environmental water samples

The current method for rapid and ultrasensitive detection of multiple heavy metals in environmental water still face challenge. Herein, the porous Co₃O₄ nanodisks with robust peroxidase-mimicking activity were prepared, and its catalytic activity can be significantly inhibited by the heavy metals like Cd(II), Hg(II), Pb(II) and As, which makes us to establish an ultrasensitive and rapid colorimetric sensor for the detection of multiple heavy metals. Further investigation reveals the anticompetitive inhibition effect of heavy metals on peroxidase-mimicking activity. The colorimetric sensor displays excellent sensitivity and selectivity, and the limits of detection (LOD) for Cd(II), Hg(II), Pb(II) and As are 0.085 μg·L^-1, 0.19 μg·L^-1, 0.2 μg·L^-1 and 0.156 μg·L^-1, respectively. Notably, the absorbance variation will be greater than 0.5 as the concentration of heavy metals exceeds 5 μg·L^-1, which can be clearly discriminated by the naked eyes. Moreover, the average recovery range of heavy metals in actual water samples is from 86.9% to 98.3%. The above results indicate that the proposed sensor exhibits excellent practical applicability for the rapid and ultrasensitive detection of multiple harmful heavy metals in several environmental water samples, which has potential bright application in protecting the environment and human health.

Assessing Heavy Metal Contamination Risk in Soil and Water in the Core Water Source Area of the Middle Route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, China

The Middle Route Project of China’s South-to-North Water Diversion Project (SNWDP) is a national-level water source protection zone and the ecological safety of its water quality and surrounding soil is of great significance. In this study, heavy metals in the surface water and topsoil in the core water source area were quantitatively analyzed using a geographic information system (GIS) and geostatistical techniques combined with environmental pollution and ecological risk assessment models to determine their environmental contamination levels, ecological risk levels, and spatial distribution patterns. Cd was identified as an essential factor responsible for the overall slight heavy metal pollution in the topsoil layer. Heavy metal contamination in surface water was primarily driven by alert-level concentrations of Hg and was consistently distributed in areas with high concentrations of Hg in the topsoil. Applying the potential ecological risk index (RI) revealed two key results. First, surface water showed no ecological risk. The concentrations of heavy metals in surface water met the goals set by relevant authorities in China. Second, overall, the topsoil was at low ecological risk, with a spatial pattern primarily influenced by Cd and Hg. Some heavy metals might have similar pollution sources and originate from human activities such as industrial activities, mining and smelting, and pesticide and chemical fertilizer applications. The study is important for improving the soil and water ecology in the reservoir area and ensuring the northward diversion of high-quality water. In addition, it provides a sound basis for making decisions about local heavy-metal remediation and treatment projects.

Enabling simultaneous redox transformation of toxic chromium(VI) and arsenic(III) in aqueous media-A review

Simultaneous conversion of most harmful As(III) and Cr(VI) to their less toxic counterparts is environmentally desirable and cost-effective. It has been confirmed that simultaneous oxidation of As(III) to As(V) and reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) can occur via free radical or mediated electron transfer processes. While Cr(VI) is reduced by reacting with H^•, e_aq^-, photoelectron directly or undergoing ligand exchange with H₂O₂ and SO₃^2-, As(III) is oxidized by HO^•, SO₄^•-, O₂^•-, and holes (h⁺) in free radical process. The ability to concentrate Cr and As species on heterogeneous interface and conductivity determining the co-conversion efficiency in mediated electron transfer process. Acidity has positive effect on these co-conversion, while mediated electron transfer process is not much affected by dissolved oxygen (O₂). Organic compounds (e.g., oxalate, citrate and phenol) commonly favor Cr(VI) reduction and inhibit As(III) oxidation. To better understand the trends in the existing data and to identify the knowledge gaps, this review elaborates the complicated mechanisms for co-conversion of As(III) and Cr(VI) by various methods. Some challenges and prospects in this active field are also briefly discussed.

A study on the effects of anion, cation, organic compounds, and pH on the release behaviors of As and Sb from sediments

The trace element of As and Sb have resulted in serious threats to ecological sustainability and human health in the Xijiang River basin, China. The geoaccumulation index (I_geo) results showed the sediment of Xijiang River was heavily contaminated by Sb as well as moderately contaminated by As. The effect of inorganic anions on the released As and Sb from the sediment increases in the following sequence: Cl^- < SO₄^2- < CO₃^2- < PO₄^3-. The presence of PO₄^3- and CO₃^2- had the greater effect over As mobility from the sediment compared to Sb. The effect of Ca(II), Al(III), and Mg(II) on the released amount of Sb from the sediment is negligible. Meanwhile, in the case of As, Ca(II) and Mg(II) had small impacts, but the released amount of As increased slightly with an increase of Al(III) concentration. The stability of As and Sb in the sediment was found to be the best at pH 5. The effect of organic compounds (≤ 0.05 mol/L) on the dissolved As percentages from the sediment increased in the following sequence: ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) < oxalate < citrate, and the effect on Sb release was oxalate < EDTA < citrate at concentrations (≤ 0.025 mol/L). This study provides the basic theoretical basis to manage the mobilization of co-contamination of sediments with As and Sb under the influence of external perturbations.

Optimization of ozone dosage in an ozone contact tank using a numerical model

Ozone has been widely applied in drinking water and wastewater treatment plants, and it is essential to determine the ozone dosage and its ratio in ozone contact tank to increase the ozone absorption and utilization rates. Batch experiments were performed to determine the first-order reaction rate coefficient of ozone (k₁) in different raw water qualities. Results showed that k₁ had an exponential decaying relationship with the ozone consumption amount (ΔO₃). Based on the ozone mass transfer and decomposition kinetics, a numerical model was developed to optimize the total ozone dosage and its ratio in three aeration parts by calculating the ozone absorption and utilization rates in an ozone contact tank. The ozone absorption rate was little affected by the water quality, and an even distribution of ozone could greatly increase the ozone absorption rate. However, the ozone utilization rate was tightly related with the water quality. For waters that consumed ozone quickly, ozone should be dosed equally in three aeration parts to increase the ozone utilization rate up to 94.3%. Otherwise, more ozone should be dosed in the first aeration part. An increase in ozone utilization rate would induce an increase in the degree of water purification. This model could give theoretical support for the determination of ozone dosage and its ratio in water treatment plants rather than experience.

Defining drinking water metal contaminant mixture risk by coupling zebrafish behavioral analysis with citizen science

Contaminated drinking water is an important public health consideration in New England where well water is often found to contain arsenic and other metals such as cadmium, lead, and uranium. Chronic or high level exposure to these metals have been associated with multiple acute and chronic diseases, including cancers and impaired neurological development. While individual metal levels are often regulated, adverse health effects of metal mixtures, especially at concentrations considered safe for human consumption remain unclear. Here, we utilized a multivariate analysis that examined behavioral outcomes in the zebrafish model as a function of multiple metal chemical constituents of 92 drinking well water samples, collected in Maine and New Hampshire. To collect these samples, a citizen science approach was used, that engaged local teachers, students, and scientific partners. Our analysis of 4016 metal-mixture combinations shows that changes in zebrafish behavior are highly mixture dependent, and indicate that certain combinations of metals, especially those containing arsenic, cadmium, lead, and uranium, even at levels considered safe in drinking water, are significant drivers of behavioral toxicity. Our data emphasize the need to consider low-level chemical mixture effects and provide a framework for a more in-depth analysis of drinking water samples. We also provide evidence for the efficacy of utilizing citizen science in research, as the broader impact of this work is to empower local communities to advocate for improving their own water quality.

Metal and metal(loids) removal efficiency using genetically engineered microbes: Applications and challenges

The environment is being polluted in different many with metal and metalloid pollution, mostly due to anthropogenic activity, which is directly affecting human and environmental health. Metals and metalloids are highly toxic at low concentrations and contribute primarily to the survival equilibrium of activities in the environment. However, because of non-degradable, they persist in nature and these metal and metalloids bioaccumulate in the food chain. Genetically engineered microorganisms (GEMs) mediated techniques for the removal of metals and metalloids are considered an environmentally safe and economically feasible strategy. Various forms of GEMs, including fungi, algae, and bacteria have been produced by recombinant DNA and RNA technologies, which have been used to eliminate metal and metalloids compounds from the polluted areas. Besides, GEMs have the potentiality to produce enzymes and other metabolites that are capable of tolerating metals stress and detoxify the pollutants. Thus, the aim of this review is to discuss the use of GEMs as advanced tools to produce metabolites, signaling molecules, proteins through genetic expression during metal and metalloids interaction, which help in the breakdown of persistent pollutants in the environment.

Impact of Cations (Na+, K+, Mg+2) and Anions (F-, Cl-, SO42-) Leaching from Filters Packed with Natural Zeolite and Ferric Nanoparticles for Wastewater Treatment

Natural zeolites have been employed to adsorb contaminants in water. This study is aimed to evaluate the cation and anion leaching from the zeolite after the wastewater was passed through filters packed with a natural zeolite (heulandite-CaAl₂Si₇O₁₈·6H₂O). Eight treatments were evaluated in a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial treatment design. Factor A was the zeolite with two levels: 127 g and 80.4 g. Factor B was the nanoparticles with two levels: one bag (3.19 g) and two bags (6.39 g); and Factor C was the use of a magnet: with and without. There were two replications; hence, a total of 16 filters were employed. The water was obtained from a municipal wastewater treatment plant (MWTP). The cations (Na⁺, K⁺; Mg⁺² and Ca⁺²) and anions (F⁻, Cl⁻ and SO₄²⁻) were measured before (influent = IW) and after filtering (effluent = EW) three times. All treatments leached the cations Na⁺ (EW in a range of 175 to 232 ppm), K⁺ (EW in a range of 15.4 to 33.2 ppm), and Mg⁺² (EW in a range of 7.40 to 10.8 ppm) but did not leach Ca⁺². Likewise, the treatments leached the anions F⁻ (EW in a range of 7.59 to 8.87 ppm), Cl⁻ (EW in a range of 85.9 to 120 ppm), and SO₄²⁻ (EW in a range of 139 to 146 ppm). We conclude that this natural zeolite leaches cations (except Ca⁺²) and anions in MWTP passed through filters. Therefore, its application in wastewater treatment should be considered for purposes such as agriculture and animal production and not for drinking water.

Real-time detection of copper contaminants in environmental water using porous silicon Fabry-Pérot interferometers

Water sources are vulnerable to intentional and inadvertent human pollution with thousands of synthetic and geogenic trace contaminants, posing long-term effects on the aquatic ecosystem and human health. Thus, early and rapid detection of water pollutants followed by corrective and preventive actions can lead to the reduction of the overall polluting impact to safeguard public health. This study presents a generic sensing assay for the label-free detection of copper contaminants in environmental water samples using multilayered polyethylenimine (PEI) functionalized porous silicon Fabry-Pérot interferometers. The selective chelating activity of PEI thin-films was monitored in real-time by reflective interferometric Fourier transform spectroscopy (RIFTS) while assessing the improved optical responses. The optimized scaffold of two sequential PEI layers depicted a linear working range between 0.2 and 2 ppm while presenting a detection limit of 0.053 ppm (53 ppb). The specificity of the developed platform was cross-validated against various metallic pollutants and cations commonly found in water bodies (i.e., Cd2+, Pb2+, Cr3+, Fe3+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Zn2+, K+ and Al3+). Finally, as a proof of concept, the analytical performance of the porous interferometers for real-life scenarios was demonstrated in three water samples (tap, ground and irrigation), presenting sufficient adaptability to complex matrix analysis with recovery values of 85-106%. Overall, the developed sensing concept offers an efficient, rapid and label-free methodology that can be potentially adopted for routine on-site detection using a simple and portable device.

Magnetic and electric field accelerate Phytoextraction of copper Lemna minor duckweed

In accordance with the opinion of the World Health Organization and the World Water Council the development of effective technologies for the treatment of wastewater from heavy metals for their discharge into water bodies or reuse is an urgent task nowadays. Phytoremediation biotechnologies is the most environmentally friendly and cheapest way of the treatment of wastewater, suitable for sustainable development principals. The main disadvantage of the phytoremediation is the slow speed of the process. A method for accelerating the process of phytoremediation by the combined effect of magnetic and weak electric fields is proposed. The purpose of this study is to determine the values of the parameters of the magnetic and weak electric fields that are most suitable for extracting cuprum ions from wastewater using the higher aqua plants (Lemna minor). A corresponding technological process based on the results of the study is proposed. The results have shown that the removal of copper cations from sulfate solutions effectively occurs in the initial period of time (1–5 hours) under the influence of a magnetic field with an intensity of H = 2 kA/m. Under the combined influence of an electrical current with density j = 240 μA/cm² and a magnetic field (H = 2 kA/m) the highest rate of copper extraction by duckweed leaves is achieved. Under these conditions, the greatest growth and development of plant leaves occurs. The paper presents the results of determining of the parameters of the electrochemical release from the eluate of the spent phytomass of duckweed. It has been determined that the release of metal occurs at E = 0.32 V. An original scheme for wastewater treatment from copper with subsequent separation of copper from the spent phytomass of duckweed is proposed. In general, the presented results are a scientific justification of wastewater treatment technologies and a contribution to resolving the crisis in the field of fresh water supply. An important contribution in the circular economy is a technology recommendation proposed for recovering copper from duckweed after wastewater treatment.

Distribution, source, water quality and health risk assessment of dissolved heavy metals in major rivers in Wuhan, China

Heavy metals are released into the water system through various natural processes and anthropogenic activities, thus indirectly or directly endangering human health. The distribution, source, water quality and health risk assessment of dissolved heavy metals (V, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Zn, As, Mo, Sb) in major rivers in Wuhan were analyzed by correlation analysis (CA), principal component analysis (PCA), heavy metal pollution index (HPI), hazard index (HI) and carcinogenic risk (CR). The results showed that the spatial variability of heavy metal contents was pronounced. PCA and CA results indicated that natural sources controlled Mn, Fe, Co, Ni and Mo, and industrial emissions were the dominant factor for V, Zn and Sb, while As was mainly from the mixed input of urban and agricultural activities. According to the heavy metal pollution index (HPI, ranging from 23.74 to 184.0) analysis, it should be noted that As and Sb contribute most of the HPI values. The health risk assessment using HI and CR showed that V and Sb might have a potential non-carcinogenic risk and As might have a potential carcinogenic risk to adults and children in the study area (CR value exceeded target risk 10⁻⁴). At the same time, it was worth noting that As might have a potential non-carcinogenic risk for children around QLR (HI value exceeded the threshold value 1). The secular variation of As and Sb should be monitor in high-risk areas. The results of this study can provide important data for improving water resources management efficiency and heavy metal pollution prevention in Wuhan.

Comprehensive exposure assessments from the viewpoint of health in a unique high natural background radiation area, Mamuju, Indonesia

Mamuju is one of the regions in Indonesia which retains natural conditions but has relatively high exposure to natural radiation. The goals of the present study were to characterize exposure of the entire Mamuju region as a high natural background radiation area (HNBRA) and to assess the existing exposure as a means for radiation protection of the public and the environment. A cross-sectional study method was used with cluster sampling areas by measuring all parameters that contribute to external and internal radiation exposures. It was determined that Mamuju was a unique HNBRA with the annual effective dose between 17 and 115 mSv, with an average of 32 mSv. The lifetime cumulative dose calculation suggested that Mamuju residents could receive as much as 2.2 Sv on average which is much higher than the average dose of atomic bomb survivors for which risks of cancer and non-cancer diseases are demonstrated. The study results are new scientific data allowing better understanding of health effects related to chronic low-dose-rate radiation exposure and they can be used as the main input in a future epidemiology study.

Abiotic oxidation of arsenite in natural and engineered systems: Mechanisms and related controversies over the last two decades (1999-2020)

Abiotic oxidation of toxic As(III) to As(V) is being deemed as a necessary step for the overall arsenic decontamination in both natural and engineered systems. Direct oxidation of As(III) by chemical oxidants, such as ozone, permanganate, ferrate, chlorine and chloramine, or naturally occurring minerals like Mn, Fe oxides, seems straightforward. Both O₂ and H₂O₂ are ineffective for arsenite oxidation, but they can be activated by reducing substances like Fe²⁺, Fe⁰ to increase the oxidation rates. Photo-induced oxidation of As(III) has been demonstrated effective in Fe complexes or minerals, NO₃^-/NO₂^-, dissolved organic matter (DOM), peroxygens and TiO₂ systems. Although a variety of oxidation methods have been developed over the past two decades, there remain many scientific and technical challenges that must be overcome before the rapid progress in basic knowledge can be translated into environmental benefits. To better understand the trends in the existing data and to identify the knowledge gaps, this review describes in detail the complicated mechanisms for As(III) oxidation by various methods and emphasizes on the conflicting data and explanation. Some prevailing concerns and challenges in the sphere of As(III) oxidation are also pointed out so as to appeal to researchers for further investigations.

Functionalization and Evaluation of Inorganic Adsorbents for the Removal of Cadmium in Wastewater

This study presents the feasibility of using various functionalized substrates, Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles (NPs) and Al₂O₃ spheres, for the removal of Cd from aqueous solution. To improve the materials’ affinity to Cd, we explored four different surface modifications, namely (3-Aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES), L-Cysteine (Cys) and 3-(triethoxysilyl) propylsuccinic anhydride (CAS). Particles were characterized by FTIR, FIB-SEM and DLS and studied for their ability to remove metal ions. Modified NPs with APTES proved to be effective for Cd removal with efficiencies of up to 94%, and retention ratios up to 0.49 mg of Cd per g of NPs. Batch adsorption experiments investigated the influence of pH, contact time, and adsorbent dose on Cd adsorption. Additionally, the recyclability of the adsorbent and its potential phytotoxicity and animal toxicity effects were explored. The Langmuir, Freundlich, pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models were applied to describe the behavior of the Cd adsorption processes. The adsorption and desorption results showed that Fe₃O₄ NPs modified with APTES are promising low-cost platforms with low phytotoxicity for highly efficient heavy metal removal in wastewater.

Human biomarkers associated with low concentrations of arsenic (As) and lead (Pb) in groundwater in agricultural areas of Thailand

Human biomarkers were used to evaluate the lead (Pb) and arsenic (As) exposure of local people who lived in an agricultural area with intense agrochemical usage and who consumed groundwater. Although the heavy metals/metalloids in the groundwater were at low concentrations, they could cause adverse effects due to a high daily water intake rate over the long term. Biomarkers (hair, fingernails and urine) were collected from 100 subjects along with the local shallow groundwater and tap water, which is the treated deep groundwater, and investigated for the concentrations of As and Pb. Shallow groundwater had an average pH of 5.21 ± 1.90, ranging from 3.77 to 8.34, with average concentrations of As and Pb of 1.311 µg/L and 6.882 µg/L, respectively. Tap water had an average pH of 5.24 ± 1.63, ranging from 3.86 to 8.89, with the average concentrations of As and Pb of 0.77 µg/L and 0.004 µg/L, respectively. The levels of both As and Pb in the hair, fingernails and urine of shallow groundwater-consuming residents were greater than those in the hair, fingernails and urine of tap water-consuming residents. Interestingly, the As level in urine showed a linear relationship with the As concentration in groundwater (R2 = 0.91). The average water consumption rate was approximately two-fold higher than the standard; thus, its consumption posed a health risk even at the low As and Pb levels in the groundwater. The hazard index (HI) ranged from 0.01 to 16.34 (average of 1.20 ± 2.50), which was higher than the acceptable level. Finally, the concomitant factors for As and Pb in the urine, hair and nails from both binary logistic regression and odds ratio (OR) analysis indicated that groundwater consumption was the major concomitant risk factor. This study suggested that direct consumption of this groundwater should be avoided and that the groundwater should be treated, especially before consumption. In conclusion, urine is suggested to be a biomarker of daily exposure to As and Pb, while for long-term exposure to these metals, fingernails are suggested as a better biomarker than hair.

A comprehensive review on magnetic carbon nanotubes and carbon nanotube-based buckypaper for removal of heavy metals and dyes

Industrial effluents contain several organic and inorganic contaminants. Among others, dyes and heavy metals introduce a serious threat to drinking waterbodies. These pollutants can be noxious or carcinogenic in nature, and harmful to humans and different aquatic species. Therefore, it is of high importance to remove heavy metals and dyes to reduce their environmental toxicity. This has led to an extensive research for the development of novel materials and techniques for the removal of heavy metals and dyes. One route to the removal of these pollutants is the utilization of magnetic carbon nanotubes (CNT) as adsorbents. Magnetic carbon nanotubes hold remarkable properties such as surface-volume ratio, higher surface area, convenient separation methods, etc. The suitable characteristics of magnetic carbon nanotubes have led them to an extensive search for their utilization in water purification. Along with magnetic carbon nanotubes, the buckypaper (BP) membranes are also favorable due to their unique strength, high porosity, and adsorption capability. However, BP membranes are mostly used for salt removal from the aqueous phase and limited literature shows their applications for removal of heavy metals and dyes. This study focuses on the existence of heavy metal ions and dyes in the aquatic environment, and methods for their removal. Various fabrication approaches for the development of magnetic-CNTs and CNT-based BP membranes are also discussed. With the remarkable separation performance and ultra-high-water flux, magnetic-CNTs, and CNT-based BP membranes have a great potential to be the leading technologies for water treatment in future.

Assessment of the Bacterial Pollution and Detection of Antibiotic Resistance Genes in Benin: Case of the Hydrographic Channel Complex Cotonou-Nokoué Lake

The study aims to document the level of contamination of the aquatic ecosystem of the Cotonou-Lake Nokoué canal hydrographic complex by multidrug-resistant bacteria and their resistance genes. For this purpose, water samples were taken from several points of the complex and from the sediments at the depth of the lake. Samples of several species of freshly caught fish products from the lake were also collected. Bacteriological analyses were carried out according to the AFNOR standard (NF U: 47–100). The identification of the different bacterial species isolated was then carried out using the API 20E gallery and specific biochemical tests. The antibiogram of the strains was performed according to the recommendations of the EUCAST. Molecular characterization of the identified strains was carried out by searching for resistance and virulence genes. The results obtained revealed the presence of several bacterial species in water samples and in sediment and intestine samples of fishery products with a predominance of Gram-negative bacilli. The resistance profile of Gram-negative bacilli showed a total resistance to metronidazole (100%). 23% of the strains were also resistant to ciprofloxacin, 41% to amoxicillin, and 60% to aztreonam. Of the Gram-positive cocci identified, 66% was resistant to vancomycin, 7.5% to ciprofloxacin, 71% to erythromycin, and 22% to tetracycline. Regarding the genes sought, bla_TEM (46%), bla_SHV (24%), and bla_CTX-M-15 (31%) were present in the genome of Gram-negative bacilli as resistance genes and fimH (41%) as virulence gene. As for Gram-positive cocci, the van B gene was completely absent. The van A was present at 6.25% in Staphylococcus aureus and mecA at 21.88 and 33.33%, respectively, in Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative staphylococci strains. The high resistance of isolated bacterial strains is a matter of concern and calls for a rational use of antibiotics in order to avoid the transmission of antibiotic resistance from the environment to humans.

Potential of Microalgae in Bioremediation of Wastewater

The increase in global pollution, industrialization and fast economic progress are considered to inflict serious consequences to the quality and availability of water throughout the world. Wastewater is generated from three major sources, i.e. industrial, agricultural, and municipal which contain pollutants, such as: xenobiotics, microplastics, heavy metals and augmented by high amount of carbon, phosphorus, and nitrogen compounds. Wastewater treatment is one of the most pressing issues since it cannot be achieved by any specific technology because of the varying nature and concentrations of pollutants and efficiency of the treatment technologies. The degradation capacity of these conventional treatment technologies is limited, especially regarding heavy metals, nutrients, and xenobiotics, steering the researchers to bioremediation using microalgae (Phycoremediation). Bioremediation can be defined as use of microalgae  for removal or biotransformation of pollutants and CO2 from wastewater with concomitant biomass production. However, the usage of wastewaters for the bulk cultivation of microalgae is advantageous for reducing carbon, nutrients cost, minimizing the consumption of freshwater, nitrogen, phosphorus recovery, and removal of other pollutants from wastewater and producing sufficient biomass for value addition for either biofuels or other value-added compounds. Several types of microalgae like Chlorella and Dunaliella have proved their applicability in the treatment of wastewaters. The bottlenecks concerning the microalgal wastewater bioremediation need to be identified and elucidated to proceed in bioremediation using microalgae. This objective of this paper is to provide an insight about the treatment of different wastewaters using microalgae and microalgal potential in the treatment of wastewaters containing heavy metals and emerging contaminants, with the specialized cultivation systems. This review also summarizes the end use applications of microalgal biomass which makes the bioremediation aspect more environmentally sustainable. Ecofriendly remediation technologies for wastewater contaminated with heavy metals with special focus on using water hyacinth and black tea wastes: a review

Treatment of water contaminated with heavy metals is challenging. Heavy metals are non-degradable, persistent in the environment, have a high dispersion capacity by water, can bioaccumulate, and represent risks to human and environmental health. Conventional treatment methods have disadvantages; however, adsorption in biomass is a highly promising method with high efficiency and low cost that avoids many of the disadvantages of conventional methods. Black tea (BT) wastes and water hyacinth (WH) have attracted attention for their ability to remove heavy metals from wastewater. Utilizing these approaches can remove contaminants and effectively manage problematic invasive species and wastes. The conventional uses of BT and WH were efficient for removing heavy metals from wastewater. Due to the unique and distinct properties and advantages of biochar and nano-forms of biosorbents, the use of BT and WH in these forms is promising to achieve sustainable heavy metals removal from wastewater. However, more study is needed to confirm preliminary results.

Combined Exposure to Metals in Drinking Water Alters the Dopamine System in Mouse Striatum

Environmental exposure to arsenic (As), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd) frequently occurs; however, data on the specific effects of combined exposure on neurotransmission, specifically dopaminergic neurotransmission, are lacking. In this study, motor coordination and dopamine content, along with the expression of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), dopamine transporter (DAT), vesicular monoamine transporter 2 (VMAT2), and dopamine receptors (DRs), were examined in the striatum of adult male mice following exposure to drinking water containing As, Pb, and/or Cd. We found that exposure to a metal mixture impaired motor coordination. After 4 weeks of treatment, a significant decrease in dopamine content and expression of TH, DAT, and VMAT2 was observed in the striatum of metal-mixture-treated mice, compared to the controls or single-metal-exposed groups. However, DRD1 and DRD2 expression did not significantly change with metal treatment. These results suggest that altered dopaminergic neurotransmission by the collective action of metals may contribute to metal-mixture-induced neurobehavioral disorders.

Bacteriological Quality and Heavy Metal Analysis of Packaged Water Produced in Lusaka, Zambia and Associated Quality Control Measures

Many people in the world lack safe basic drinking water sources and rely on untreated water source. Packaged water can be considered as an alternative to other water sources if measures are put in place to ensure its safety for consumption. This study aimed to assess the bacteriological quality and heavy metal analysis of packaged water produced in Lusaka, Zambia and associated quality control measures. A cross-sectional study was conducted in May 2019 where 18 brands of packaged water were analyzed for total and fecal coliforms as well as concentrations of Lead, Chromium, and Cadmium. The study found that 33.5% of the packaged water produced in Lusaka did not comply with the standard for drinking water on bacteriological quality. We also found that the concentrations for Lead were <0.01 mg/l in all the 17 samples, thus compliant to WHO/ZABS standards. Concentrations of Chromium were between 0.002 and 0.62 mg/l and compliance to the standard was 11.8%. Concentrations for Cadmium were between 0.009 and 0.2 mg/l against the acceptable concentration of <0.003 mg/l. Most brands of the packaged water did not conform to the standards for drinking water.

Exposure to a mixture of metals and growth indicators in 6-11-year-old children from the 2013-16 NHANES

Lead (Pb), mercury (Hg) and fluoride (F) exposure during childhood is of concern owing to their toxicity. Also, evidence suggests that high and low exposure levels to manganese (Mn) and selenium (Se) during this vulnerable period are associated with an increased risk of adverse health effects. A reduced growth is associated with high Pb and F exposure; however, little is known about their impact on children's body size, and there is a lack of consensus on the effects of Hg, Mn, and Se exposure on children's anthropometric measures. This is particularly true for childhood metal co-exposures at levels relevant to the general population. We investigated the joint effects of exposure to a metal mixture (Pb, Mn, Hg, and Se in blood and F in plasma) on 6-11-year-old US children's anthropometry (n = 1,634). Median F, Pb, Mn, Hg, and Se concentrations were 0.3 μmol/L, 0.5 μg/dL, 10.2 μg/L, 0.3 μg/L, and 178.0 μg/L, respectively. The joint effects of the five metals were modeled using Bayesian kernel machine and linear regressions. Pb and Mn showed opposite directions of associations with all outcome measured, where Pb was inversely associated with anthropometry. For body mass index and waist circumference, the effect estimates for Pb and Mn appeared stronger at high and low concentrations of the other metals of the mixture, respectively. Our findings suggest that metal co-exposures may influence children's body mass and linear growth indicators, and that such relations may differ by the exposure levels of the components of the metal mixture.

Metals in the drinking water of First Nations across Canada

OBJECTIVES

The First Nations Food, Nutrition and Environment Study (FNFNES), a community-based participatory research project, measured the levels of metals of health concern and the levels of metals that have operational guidance (OG) and aesthetic objectives (AO) in drinking water of First Nations (FN) south of the 60th parallel.

METHODS

Both stagnant (first draw) and flushed tap water samples were collected from participating households in 91 FN representing 11 ecozones. The concentrations of metals were quantified and compared to Health Canada's Guidelines for Canadian Drinking Water Quality (GCDWQ).

RESULTS

In total, 1516 FN households participated in this study component. Exceedances of the 2019 GCDWQ for the health-based maximum acceptable concentration (MAC) were found for five metals: lead 8.4% of households (first draw), manganese 4.0%, uranium 1.6%, aluminum 1.3%, and copper 0.2% (flushed). Flushing taps resulted in a decrease to 0.7% of households exceeding the lead MAC. Exceedances of the current OG for aluminum were found in 14.2% and the exceedances of the proposed OG were found in 18.1% of households (flushed). Exceedances of the AO (flushed) were as follows: manganese 12.8%, sodium 5.1%, iron 3.5%, and copper 0.4%. Results of the study were compared to provincial surveys where the data were available. Taste and colour were reported to be the main reasons for limiting the use of tap water.

CONCLUSION

Overall, the quality of drinking water with respect to trace metals of human health concern is satisfactory. However, elevated lead levels were found in some FN communities. Until appropriate action can take place, it was recommended to flush the water before use to reduce the lead levels.

Groundwater hydrochemistry, source identification and pollution assessment in intensive industrial areas, eastern Chinese loess plateau

Groundwater is essential for regional ecological-economic system and is an important resource of drinking water, especially in the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP), where is a typical water-limited ecosystem. Groundwater quality deterioration will affect water security and exacerbate the water shortages. Groundwater hydrochemistry, pollution source apportionment, quality and health risks were evaluated based on analysis of major ions and selected trace elements in seasonal samples of the Fen River Basin (FRB) in the eastern CLP. Groundwaters in the FRB were mainly HCO₃^--Ca²⁺-Na⁺ water type with low dissolved solutes in upstream samples, high values in midstream samples and medium values in downstream samples. Solutes in upstream samples were mainly derived from carbonate weathering, while those in midstream and downstream samples came from silicate weathering, evaporites dissolution and anthropogenic sources. Self-organizing map (SOM) showed the hydrochemistry remained unchanged from dry to wet season for most sampling points. The seasonal variations of Ag, Cd, Ni, Pb, and Tl were significant due to anthropogenic input. High NO₃^- in upstream and downstream samples resulted primarily from sewage discharge, and high SO₄^2- in midstream and downstream samples was from gypsum- and coal-related industries. In addition, anthropogenic input related to coal industries significantly aggravates pollution of As, Ni, Ag, Fe, and Mn. Influenced by evaporites and anthropogenic input, midstream samples had high salinity, total hardness and water quality indices (WQIs) and were unsuitable for irrigation or drinking purposes. Seasonal variation of WQI in the FRB was unsignificant except Jiaokou River sub-basin, where groundwater quality was worse in the wet season than the dry season due to coal mining. Great attention should be paid to the high non-carcinogenic risks of exposure to F, V, Mn, and Cr via dermal absorption, particularly for children. Overall, groundwater quality in the FRB was best in upstream, medium in midstream and worst in midstream based on different index. Groundwater quality is deteriorated by anthropogenic input and the sewage discharge in the FRB should be strictly controlled. Our report provides a reference for groundwater pollution evaluation and source identification in similar areas.

Presence of heavy metals in drinking water resources of Iran: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Water quality is one of the most important indices for public health especially for drinking water consumptions. This study was conducted to survey the presence of heavy metals in drinking water resources of Iran using a systematic review and meta-analysis. The literature search was conducted in data bases of PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, Scopus, Google Scholar, and some Persian databases up to 31 July 2018. Of all the articles reviewed (1151 articles), 61 papers were eligible for systematic review. Results indicated variable heterogeneity between studies for different pollutants (I² between 0 and 100). A subgroup analysis was performed for three different types of water resources such as drinking water, groundwater, and surface water to find the possible source of the heterogeneity. The pooled mean concentration level of iron was the highest at 255.8 (95% CI = 79.48-432.13 μg/l) and vanadium the lowest at 3.21 (95% CI = 1.45-4.98 μg/l). The sequence of metal concentration (μg/l) in descending order is as follows: Fe (255.8) > B (159.81) > Al (158.5) > Zn (130.73) > As (85.85) > Mn (51.61) > Cu (47.98) > Se (42.68) > Pb (37.22) > Co (22.76) > Mo (18.92) > Ni (16.79) > Cr (13.47) > Hg (4.49) > Cd (4.19) > V (3.21). The mean pooled concentration level of Al, As, Se, Pb, and Cd was higher than the WHO guideline and Iran Standard, and the rest of the metals had lower mean pooled concentration level. Pb and Cd were the common heavy metals that existed in all subgroups. As a recommendation, the relationship assessment of water parameters and heavy metals could be addressed in future studies of Iran's water resources.

Cucumber peel bead biosorbent for multi-ion decontamination of drinking water collected from a mine region in New Zealand

Cucumber peel as a bead was examined for its ability to remove heavy metals from drinking water. Deionised laboratory water was spiked with seven toxic ions namely, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, copper, mercury, lead and nickel at 0.1 mg L^-1 and kinetic studies were performed over 72 h. Kinetic data were modelled using film diffusion, pore diffusion, Weber-Morris, pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order and Elovich equation. The bead surface was imaged before and after biosorption using scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Results indicated that different ions contained in a multi-ion solution were biosorbed by different mechanisms and at different rates. Equilibrium biosorption for Cd, Hg and Ni was ∼91, 90 and 67%, respectively, at 24 h. These ions diffused through the pores of the bead, as they were not identified by EDS, and their biosorption increased with an increase in temperature. The least biosorbed ions were As and Cr with ∼21 and 17% equilibrium biosorption, respectively. The removal of only Cu, Hg, Pb and Ni was pH-dependent. Cucumber peel beads removed all spiked ions from real drinking water collected near the Macraes gold mine in New Zealand, but the biosorption percentage was lower for Cd, Cu, Pb and Ni compared to spiked deionised laboratory water. The results of this study suggest that cucumber peel when immobilised on a sodium alginate bead can be used as a potential biosorbent for the removal of multiple toxic ions from drinking water and their use warrants further examination in contaminated drinking water.

Novel use of coactivators to enhance sensitivity of SEAP-based reporter assay system for visual monitoring and quantitation of androgens and antiandrogens in water

Every year thousands of chemicals get discharged into the waterbodies of the world. These chemicals cause endocrine disruption and induce adverse health effects in human and aquatic life. Global environmental protection agencies emphasise the need to develop rapid and specific tests for identification of these endocrine disruptive chemicals (EDCs) in water. Detection of chemicals that disrupt androgen signaling is especially important because androgen input at specific phases of life is critical for proper male development. Effect-based methods such as reporter assays are suitable tools for identification of EDCs in mixtures of unknown composition. The current study describes a stable, secreted alkaline protease (SEAP)-based reporter assay system, for visual detection of androgenic/antiandrogenic activity present in water samples. A novel feature of this system is the inclusion of coactivators, GRIP1, CARM1, p300 and mZac1b, in addition to an optimal combination of androgen response element (3× HRE), androgen receptor (AR) and the SEAP reporter gene. Incorporation of the coactivators resulted in a transcriptional fold change of 162 folds, enabling visual detection at much lower concentrations of androgen (1 picomolar) within 1 h of addition of test sample. Also, non-androgenic steroids such as estrogen, progesterone and Dexamethasone did not induce significant reporter activity, except at very high concentrations. This reporter assay can be readily converted into a high throughput format for investigation in multiple samples simultaneously, and reflects the changes that can be expected to occur inside a mammalian cell. The androgenic activity in six different water sources was evaluated using this assay. The results reveal significant androgenic activity in rivers and lakes close to Industrial areas, whereas the highest androgenic activity was observed in water containing paper and pulp mill effluents. This bioassay therefore provides a rapid, visual detection tool for effect-directed analysis of androgenic/antiandrogenic compounds in water. IMPACT STATEMENT: The current SEAP-based assay allows visual detection of androgens/antiandrogens in water, at concentrations as low as 1 picomolar, within a 1 h time period, in a high throughput format, providing a very useful technique for field users and regulatory bodies.

Environmental Spread of Antibiotic Resistance

Antibiotic resistance represents a global health concern. Soil, water, livestock and plant foods are directly or indirectly exposed to antibiotics due to their agricultural use or contamination. This selective pressure has acted synergistically to bacterial competition in nature to breed antibiotic-resistant (AR) bacteria. Research over the past few decades has focused on the emergence of AR pathogens in food products that can cause disease outbreaks and the spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), but One Health approaches have lately expanded the focus to include commensal bacteria as ARG donors. Despite the attempts of national and international authorities of developed and developing countries to reduce the over-prescription of antibiotics to humans and the use of antibiotics as livestock growth promoters, the selective flow of antibiotic resistance transmission from the environment to the clinic (and vice-versa) is increasing. This review focuses on the mechanisms of ARG transmission and the hotspots of antibiotic contamination resulting in the subsequent emergence of ARGs. It follows the transmission of ARGs from farm to plant and animal food products and provides examples of the impact of ARG flow to clinical settings. Understudied and emerging antibiotic resistance selection determinants, such as heavy metal and biocide contamination, are also discussed here.

Developmental toxicity of lead in rats after gestational exposure and the protective role of taurine

The present study was conducted to investigate the potential adverse effect of Pb on pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats and their fetuses after maternal exposure, on gestational days (GD) 7-16. The possible protective role of taurine (TA), administered throughout the gestation period (GD 1-20) against Pb toxicity, was also evaluated. Pregnant rats were divided into four groups: Group 1 (control) was given distilled water; Group 2 was exposed to Pb (250 ppm) in drinking water (GD 7-16), whereas Group 3 received TA (50 mg/kg/day) by oral gavage (GD 1-20); Group 4 was exposed to Pb (GD 7-16), whereas pretreated with TA from GD 1 till the end of the gestation period. After termination on GD 20, maternal and embryo-fetal outcomes were evaluated. Blood samples were collected for hematological and biochemical parameters assessment. The results showed that, Pb induced a significant reduction in the maternal body weight, weight gain, uterine and placental weight, in addition to a high incidence of abortion and fetal resorption. Meanwhile, fetuses demonstrated decreased body weight and length, with a high rate of mortality as well as external and skeletal abnormalities. Additionally, Pb induced severe hematological and biochemical alterations in both dams and fetuses. The toxicity of Pb was further emphasized by placental histopathological examination and hepatic DNA fragmentation. Pretreatment with TA greatly attenuated the impact of Pb on both maternal and fetal parameters. Moreover, TA alleviated the incidence of placental damage and hepatic DNA fragmentation. The results highlight the potential prophylaxis role of TA against maternal and developmental Pb toxicity.

Nexus between Water Security Framework and Public Health: A Comprehensive Scientific Review

Water scarcity, together with the projected impacts of water stress worldwide, has led to a rapid increase in research on measuring water security. However, water security has been conceptualized under different perspectives, including various aspects and dimensions. Since public health is also an integral part of water security, it is necessary to understand how health has been incorporated as a dimension in the existing water security frameworks. While supply–demand and governance narratives dominated several popular water security frameworks, studies that are specifically designed for public health purposes are generally lacking. This research aims to address this gap, firstly by assessing the multiple thematic dimensions of water security frameworks in scientific disclosure; and secondly by looking into the public health dimensions and evaluating their importance and integration in the existing water security frameworks. For this, a systematic review of the Scopus database was undertaken using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. A detailed review analysis of 77 relevant papers was performed. The result shows that 11 distinct dimensions have been used to design the existing water security framework. Although public health aspects were mentioned in 51% of the papers, direct health impacts were considered only by 18%, and indirect health impacts or mediators were considered by 33% of the papers. Among direct health impacts, diarrhea is the most prevalent one considered for developing a water security framework. Among different indirect or mediating factors, poor accessibility and availability of water resources in terms of time and distance is a big determinant for causing mental illnesses, such as stress or anxiety, which are being considered when framing water security framework, particularly in developing nations. Water quantity is more of a common issue for both developed and developing countries, water quality and mismanagement of water supply-related infrastructure is the main concern for developing nations, which proved to be the biggest hurdle for achieving water security. It is also necessary to consider how people treat and consume the water available to them. The result of this study sheds light on existing gaps for different water security frameworks and provides policy-relevant guidelines for its betterment. Also, it stressed that a more wide and holistic approach must be considered when framing a water security framework to result in sustainable water management and human well-being.

Removal Mechanisms of Slag against Potentially Toxic Elements in Soil and Plants for Sustainable Agriculture Development: A Critical Review

Potentially toxic element (PTE) pollution is a major abiotic stress, which reduces plant growth and affects food quality by entering the food chain, and ultimately poses hazards to human health. Currently, the use of slag in PTE-contaminated soils has been reported to reduce PTEs and toxicity in plants. This review highlights the role of slag used as a fertilizer for better crop production and sustainable agricultural development. The application of slag increased the growth, yield, and quality of crops under PTE toxicity. The mechanisms followed by slag are the immobilization of PTEs in the soil, enhancement of soil pH, changes in the redox state of PTEs, and positive changes in soil physicochemical and biological properties under PTE toxicity. Nevertheless, these processes are influenced by the plant species, growth conditions, imposition length of stress, and type of slag used. The current review provides an insight into improving plant tolerance to PTE toxicity by slag-based fertilizer application and highlights the theoretical basis for applying slag in PTE-contaminated environments worldwide.

Graphitic bio-char and bio-oil synthesis via hydrothermal carbonization-co-liquefaction of microalgae biomass (oiled/de-oiled) and multiple heavy metals remediations

Thermochemical transformation of microalgae biomass into graphitic bio-chars entices as proficient bio-adsorbents for heavy metal contaminants. This study explores the synergistic impact of Chlorella sorokiniana on biomass generation and wastewater remediation in high rate algae pond (HRAP). Biomass produced was applied for hydrothermal carbonization-co-liquefaction (HTCL). The structural and morphological characteristics of HTCL products (i.e. bio-chars and bio-oils) have been systematically studied by XRD, Raman, FTIR, elemental analyzer, SEM, BET, and ¹H NMR spectroscopy. The crystallite size of the graphite 2H indexing planes was to be 4.65 nm and 14.07 nm in the bio-chars of oiled biomass (MB-OB) and de-oiled biomass (MB-DOB), respectively. The increase in the I_D/I_G ratio of MB-DOB indicated the highly disordered graphitic structure due to the appearance of carbonyl, hydroxyl, and epoxy functionalities in the line of high C/N and low C/H ratio. Also, the multiple heavy metals remediation of MB-DOB revealed better efficiency as ~100% in 720 min. The kinetics analysis shows the correlation coefficient of pseudo-second-order is well fitted compared to the pseudo-first-order. The Langmuir adsorption model signifies the adsorption of heavy metal ions in a monolayer adsorption manner. The study proposes the microalgae bio-char potential for multiple heavy metals remediation alongside bio-oils.

A global reconnaissance of particulates and metals/metalloids in untreated drinking water sources

Metal and metalloid contamination in drinking water sources is a global concern, particularly in developing countries. This study used hollow membrane water filters and metal-capturing polyurethane foams to sample 71 drinking water sources in 22 different countries. Field sampling was performed with sampling kits prepared in the lab at Hope College in Holland, MI, USA. Filters and foams were sent back to the lab after sampling, and subsequent analysis of flushates and rinsates allowed the estimation of suspended solids and metal and other analayte concentrations in source waters. Estimated particulate concentrations were 0-92 mg/L, and consisted of quartz, feldspar, and clay, with some samples containing metal oxides or sulfide phases. As and Cu were the only analytes which occurred above the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines of 10 μg/L and 2000 μg/L, respectively, with As exceeding the guideline in 45% of the sources and Cu in 3%. Except for one value of ~ 285 μg/L, As concentrations were 45-200 μg/L (river), 65-179 μg/L (well), and 112-178 μg/L (tap). Other metals (Ce, Fe, Mg, Mn, Zn) with no WHO guideline were also detected, with Mn the most common. This study demonstrated that filters and foams can be used for reconnaissance characterization of untreated drinking water. However, estimated metal and other analyte concentrations could only be reported as minimum values due to potential incomplete retrieval of foam-bound analytes. A qualitative reporting methodology was used to report analytes as "present" if the concentration was below the WHO guideline, and "present-recommend retesting" if the concentration was quantifiable and above the WHO guideline.

Millimeter-Shaped Metal-Organic Framework/Inorganic Nanoparticle Composite as a New Adsorbent for Home Water-Purification Filters

Heavy-metal contamination of water is a global problem with an especially severe impact in countries with old or poorly maintained infrastructure for potable water. An increasingly popular solution for ensuring clean and safe drinking water in homes is the use of adsorption-based water filters, given their affordability, efficacy, and simplicity. Herein, we report the preparation and functional validation of a new adsorbent for home water filters, based on our metal-organic framework (MOF) composite containing UiO-66 and cerium(IV) oxide (CeO₂) nanoparticles. We began by preparing CeO₂@UiO-66 microbeads and then encapsulating them in porous polyethersulfone (PES) granules to obtain millimeter-scale CeO₂@UiO-66@PES granules. Next, we validated these granules as an adsorbent for the removal of metals from water by substituting them for the standard adsorbent (ion-exchange resin spheres) inside a commercially available water pitcher from Brita. We assessed their performance according to the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) guideline 53-2019, "Drinking Water Treatment Units-Health Effects Standard". Remarkably, a pitcher loaded with a combination of our CeO₂@UiO-66@PES granules and activated carbon at standard ratios met the target reduction thresholds set by NSF/ANSI 53-2019 for all the metals tested: As(III), As(V), Cd(II), Cr(III), Cr(VI), Cu(II), Hg(II), and Pb(II). Throughout the test, the modified pitcher proved to be robust and stable. We are confident that our findings will bring MOF-based adsorbents one step closer to real-world use.

One-pot hydrothermal preparation of manganese-doped carbon microspheres for effective deep removal of hexavalent chromium from wastewater

Mn-doped activated carbon microspheres (MnO_x/ACS) with super-high adsorption capacities and deep removal capability for hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) were successfully prepared via an ammonium persulfate-assisted hydrothermal method followed by potassium oxalate activation using KMnO₄ and sucrose as raw materials. Their -physical and chemical properties, as well as those of Mn-doped non-activated carbon spheres (MnO_x/CS), were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, EDS-mapping, XPS, N₂ adsorption-desorption, ICP-AES, and elemental analysis. It was found that the manganese oxide (MnO_x) particles were uniformly embedded within the carbon spheres via layer-by-layer capture, and the MnO_x/ACS exhibited strong redox activity because of the multivalent nature of MnO_x, resulting in excellent adsorption performance via reduction. In particular, MnO_x/ACS-4 with a Mn content of 1.06 wt% and a specific surface area of 1405.7 m² g^-1 achieved a maximum adsorption capacity of 660.7 mg g^-1; this can reduce Cr(VI) content to less than 0.05 mg L^-1, which meets the corresponding Chinese drinking water quality standard when the initial concentration of Cr(VI) is less than 400 mg L^-1. Furthermore, this highly efficient method can be extended to prepare V-, Mo-, or W-doped carbon microspheres with significantly enhanced adsorption performance for Cr(VI) compared to bare activated carbon sphere, indicating their good application prospect for the deep removal for heavy metal ions from wastewater.

A facile method to achieve dopamine polymerization in MOFs pore structure for efficient and selective removal of trace lead (II) ions from drinking water

Heavy metals are seriously hazardous contaminants and drinking water has been identified as an important route of human exposure to them. Herein, to efficiently and selectively remove trace heavy metal ions, a facile method was reported to achieve the slow polymerization of dopamine in the cages of MIL-100 (Fe) via ultrasonic treatment followed by the hydrolysis of the urea. X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Brunner-Emmet-Teller (BET) and pore size distribution determination confirmed the formation of the polydopamine (PDA) and binding with the unsaturated Fe³⁺ site in MIL-100 (Fe) pores. The composite not only retained pore structure of MOFs but also contained abundant reactive functional groups. When initial lead concentration was 150 ppb and 20 ppm calcium coexisted at pH of 6.5 ± 0.25, the effluent lead concentration met the safe drinking water standard in several tens of seconds, and decreased to 1.13 ppb in 10 min. The adsorption rate reached 99.35%. The synthetic strategy effectively overcomes mass transfer resistance of trace heavy metal ions and provides a facile approach to prepare adsorption materials for efficient and selective removal of trace heavy metal ions from drinking water.

Phosphate modified magnetite@ferrihydrite as an magnetic adsorbent for Cd(II) removal from water, soil, and sediment

This work successfully fabricated a novel magnetic adsorbent, i.e., phosphate modified magnetite@ferrihydrite (Mag@Fh-P), and explored its potential application for Cd(II) removal from water, soil, and sediment. To synthesize the adsorbent, ferrihydrite-coated magnetite (Mag@Fh) was firstly developed with partially acid-dissolved natural magnetite particles, followed by in-situ synthesis of ferrihydrite on magnetite surface via alkali addition. Selection of natural magnetite as iron source for ferrihydrite synthesis and as magnetic core is believed to save the cost of adsorbent. Then, phosphate was loaded on Mag@Fh by impregnation-heating treatment to produce Mag@Fh-P. Batch adsorption experiments revealed that the Cd(II) adsorption on Mag@Fh-P could reach equilibrium within 60 min, and the calculated adsorption capacity using Langmuir model was 64.1 mg/g, which was significantly higher than that on magnetite (0.44 mg/g) and Mag@Fh (23.9 mg/g). The results from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis and batch adsorption experiments confirmed that both ligand exchange and electrostatic attraction contributed to Cd(II) adsorption. Besides, Mag@Fh-P can also be an efficient amendment for soil and sediment remediation. The spent Mag@Fh-P could be easily recovered via magnetic separation, accompanied by the significant decrease in total Cd(II) concentration in soil/sediment. At an adsorbent dosage of 2 wt%, 0.82 and 0.74 mg/kg of total Cd(II) in soil and sediment was removed, respectively. In all, the synthesized Mag@Fh-P as adsorbent has the merits of cost effectiveness, fast adsorption rate, high adsorption capacity, and easy separation, and thus it has promising application for the removal of heavy metal cations from water, soil, and sediment.
