Abstract
Two Fe(II) complexes fac-[Fe(II)(HL(n-Pr))(3)]Cl·Y (Y = AsF(6) (1) and BF(4) (2)) were synthesized, where HL(n-Pr) is 2-methylimidazole-4-yl-methylideneamino-n-propyl. Each complex-cation has the same octahedral N(6) geometry coordinated by three bidentate ligands and assumes facial-isomerism, fac-[Fe(II)(HL(n-Pr))(3)](2+) with Δ- and Λ-enantiomorphs. Three imidazole groups per Δ- or Λ-fac-[Fe(II)(HL(n-Pr))(3)](2+) are hydrogen-bonded to three Cl(-) ions or, from the viewpoint of the Cl(-) ion, one Cl(-) ion is hydrogen-bonded to three neighbouring fac-[Fe(II)(HL(n-Pr))(3)](2+) cations. The 3 : 3 NH···Cl(-) hydrogen bonds between Δ- or Λ-fac-[Fe(II)(HL(n-Pr))(3)](2+) and Cl(-) generate two kinds of assembly structures. The directions of the 3 : 3 NH···Cl(-) hydrogen bonds and hence the resulting assembly structures are determined by the size of the anion Y, though Y is not involved into the network structure and just accommodated in the cavity. Compound 1 has a 1D ladder structure giving a larger cavity, in which the Δ- and Λ-fac-[Fe(II)(HL(n-Pr))(3)](2+) enantiomorphs are bridged by two NH···Cl(-) hydrogen bonds. Compound 2 has a 2D network structure with a net unit of a cyclic trimer of {fac-[Fe(II)(HL(n-Pr))(3)](2+)···Cl(-)}(3) giving a smaller cavity, in which Δ- or Λ-fac-[Fe(II)(HL(n-Pr))(3)](2+) species with the same chirality are linked by NH···Cl(-) hydrogen bonds to give a homochiral 2D network structure. Magnetic susceptibility and Mössbauer spectral measurements demonstrated that compound 1 showed an abrupt one-step spin crossover with 4.0 K thermal hysteresis of T(c↓) = 125.5 K and T(c↑) = 129.5 K and compound 2 showed no spin transition and stayed in the high-spin state over the 5-300 K temperature range.

Abstract
Spin-crossover compounds are becoming increasingly popular for device and sensor applications, and in soft materials, that make use of their switchable colour, paramagnetism and conductivity. The de novo design of new solid spin-crossover compounds with pre-defined switching properties is desirable for application purposes. This challenging problem of crystal engineering requires an understanding of how the temperature and cooperativity of a spin-transition are influenced by the structure of the bulk material. Towards that end, this critical review presents a survey of molecular spin-crossover compounds with good availability of crystallographic data. A picture is emerging that changes in molecular shape between the high- and low-spin states, and the ability of a lattice to accommodate such changes, can play an important role in determining the existence and the cooperativity of a thermal spin-transition in the solid state (198 references).

Abstract
The iron(III) spin-crossover compounds [Fe(Hthsa)(thsa)]⋅H2 O (1), [Fe(Hth5Clsa)(th5Clsa)2 ]⋅H2 O (2), and [Fe(Hth5Brsa)(th5Brsa)2 ]⋅H2 O (3) (H2 thsa=salicylaldehyde thiosemicarbazone, H2 th5Clsa=5-chlorosalicylaldehyde thiosemicarbazone, and H2 th5Brsa=5-bromosalicylaldehyde thiosemicarbazone) have been synthesized and their spin-transition properties investigated by magnetic susceptibility, Mössbauer spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry measurements. The three compounds exhibit an abrupt spin transition with a thermal hysteresis effect. The more polarizable the substituent on the salicylaldehyde moiety, the more complete is the transition at room temperature with an increased degree of cooperativity. The molecular structures of 1 and 2 in the high-spin state are revealed. The occurrence of the light-induced excited-spin-state trapping phenomenon appears to be dependent on the substituent incorporated into the 5-position of the salicylaldehyde subunit. Whereas the compounds with an electron-withdrawing group (-Br or -Cl) exhibit light-induced trapped excited high-spin states with great longevity of metastability, the halogen-free compound does not, even though strong intermolecular interactions (such as hydrogen-bonding networks and π stacking) operate in the system. For compound 2, the surface level of photoconversion is less than 35 %. In contrast, compound 3 displays full photoexcitation.

Abstract
We describe the multistep synthesis of a new terthienyl-substituted QsalH ligand and an iron(3+) spin-crossover complex (1) containing this ligand, which electropolymerizes to produce a hybrid-conducting metallopolymer film (poly1). Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements demonstrate that spin-crossover is operative in the polymer film, and resistivity measurements on indium-tin oxide coated glass slides containing the polymer film exhibit intriguing temperature-dependent profiles.

Abstract
The title compound, [Fe(C16H11N2O)2]N3, consists of a [Fe(qsal)2]+ cation [Hqsal = N-(8-quinolyl)salicylaldimine] and an azide anion. The FeIII ion, lying on a twofold rotation axis, is coordinated by four N atoms and two O atoms from two tridentate qsal ligands in an octahedral geometry. The molecules are connected into a three-dimensional network by intermolecular C—H⋯N and C—H⋯O interactions. π–π interactions [interplanar distance = 3.58 (1) Å] between the quinoline rings of adjacent molecules further stabilize the crystal structure.

Abstract
A new pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylate iron(III)/iron(II) complex [Fe(phen)(3)][Fe(2)(PDC)(4)].3CH(3)OH was synthesized and characterized (where PDC=pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylate, phen=1,10-phenanthroline) by using elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy and thermal analyses (TGA and DTA). The molecular structure of the complex has been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The complex is mixed-ligands and the IR spectra display bands characteristic of coordinated mixed-ligand bases. All the IR results are in agreement with the X-ray crystal result. The bond lengths indicate that this complex has [Fe(phen)(3)](2+) cation where Fe(II) ion is in typical low-spin state, and in counter ions, [Fe(PDC)(2)](-) are both in high-spin state.

Abstract
Over the past five years, the spin-crossover (SCO) phenomenon has experienced a clear new lease of interest from the scientific community coinciding with the recent publication of remarkable new advances. This perspective paper describes five illustrative examples of SCO systems, published during the past twelve months, showing new aspects of the unique and very appealing behaviour of these molecular switches, which may find interesting applications in the near future.
