Abstract
Palladium supported on nickel ferrite (Pd/NiF2O4) was found to be a highly active catalyst for the Suzuki coupling reaction between various aryl halides and arylboronic acids. The reaction gave excellent yields (70–98%) under ligand free conditions in a 1:1 DMF/H2O solvent mixture, in short reaction times (10–60 min). The catalyst could be recovered easily by applying an external magnetic field. The polyaryls were similarly synthesized.

Abstract
Many important intracellular biochemical reactions are modulated by transition metals, typically in the form of metalloproteins. The ability to carry out selective transformations inside a cell would allow researchers to manipulate or interrogate innumerable biological processes. Here, we show that palladium nanoparticles trapped within polystyrene microspheres can enter cells and mediate a variety of Pd(0)-catalysed reactions, such as allylcarbamate cleavage and Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling. The work provides the basis for the customization of heterogeneous unnatural catalysts as tools to carry out artificial chemistries within cells. Such in cellulo synthesis has potential for a plethora of applications ranging from cellular labelling to synthesis of modulators or inhibitors of cell function.

Abstract
The mechanism of the reaction of trans-[ArPdX(PPh(3))(2)] (Ar=p-Z-C(6)H(4); Z=CN, F, H; X=I, Br, Cl) with Ar'B(OH)(2) (Ar'=p-Z'-C(6)H(4); Z'=CN, H, OMe) has been established in DMF in the presence of the base OH(-) in the context of real palladium-catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura reactions. The formation of the cross-coupling product ArAr' and [Pd(0)(PPh(3))(3)] has been followed through the application of electrochemical techniques. Kinetic data have been obtained for the first time, with determination of the observed rate constant, k(obs), of the overall reaction. trans-[ArPdX(PPh(3))(2)] is not reactive in the absence of the base. The base OH(-) plays three roles. It favors the reaction: 1) by formation of trans-[ArPd(OH)(PPh(3))(2)], a key complex which, in contrast to trans-[ArPdX(PPh(3))(2)], reacts with Ar'B(OH)(2) (rate-determining transmetalation), and 2) by unexpected promotion of the reductive elimination from the intermediate trans-[ArPdAr'(PPh(3))(2)], which generates ArAr' and a Pd(0) species. Conversely, the base OH(-) disfavors the reaction by formation of the unreactive anionic Ar'B(OH)(3)(-). As a consequence of these antagonistic effects of OH(-), the overall reactivity is controlled by the concentration of OH(-) and passes through a maximum as the concentration of OH(-) is increased. Therefore, the base favors the rate-determining transmetalation and unexpectedly also the reductive elimination.

Abstract
A wide variety of new bi(hetero)aryl derivatives of the thieno[3,2-b]pyridine skeleton was obtained in high to excellent yields (65-91%) by Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling of the methyl 3-amino-6-bromothieno[3,2-b]pyridine-2-carboxylate, recently reported by us, with aryl or heteroaryl pinacolboranes or potassium trifluoroborates. The coupling products obtained were evaluated for their growth inhibitory effect on three human tumor cell lines, representing different tumor models, MCF-7 (breast adenocarcinoma), A375-C5 (melanoma) and NCI-H460 (non-small cell lung cancer). Some of the compounds showed an interesting activity against the tested cell lines, with GI50 values in the μM range, and it was possible to establish some structure-activity relationships (SARs). Several compounds presented GI50 values below 15 μM, particularly a bithiophene and an o-aniline thienopyridine derivative. The first presented selectivity for MCF-7 and NCI-H460 cell lines, with very low GI50 values (0.7-1.0 μM), while the latter was active against the three cell lines tested in this study, also presenting very low GI50 values (2.5-4.2 μM). The effect of these two compounds on cell cycle progression was analyzed in the NCI-H460 cell line. Results showed that both compounds interfered with the normal cell cycle distribution.
