Mono-organotin(IV) and tin(IV) derivatives of 2-mercaptopyridine and 2-mercaptopyrimidine: X-ray structures of methyl-tris(2-pyridinethiolato)tin(IV) and phenyl-tris(2-pyridinethiolato)tin(IV)�1.5CHCl3

Synthesis and Oxidation of a Paddlewheel-Shaped Rhodium/Antimony Complex Featuring Pyridine-2-Thiolate Ligands

The paddlewheel-shaped complex [Sb(μ-pyS)₄ Rh]₂ (1) (pyS^- = 2-S-C₅ H₄ N^- ) was synthesized from [Rh(pyS)(cod)]₂ (cod=1,5-cyclooctadiene) and Sb(pyS)₃ . Upon oxidation with ONMe₃ , the complex [(μ-O)Sb(μ-pyS)₃ Rh(κ² -pyS)]₂ (2) is formed. Both 1 and 2 form dimers and feature short Rh-Sb bonds and bridging pyS ligands. ¹²¹ Sb Mössbauer spectro- scopy and computational studies were employed to elucidate the Rh-Sb bonding in 1 and 2. Both covalent (Rh-Sb, X-type Sb ligand) and dative (Rh→Sb, Z-type; Rh←Sb L-type Sb ligand) interactions have to be considered for the description of their bonding situations.

Neutral six-coordinate and cationic five-coordinate silicon(IV) complexes with two bidentate monoanionic N,S-pyridine-2-thiolato(-) ligands

A series of neutral six-coordinate silicon(IV) complexes (4-11) with two bidentate monoanionic N,S-pyridine-2-thiolato ligands and two monodentate ligands R(1) and R(2) was synthesized (4, R(1) = R(2) = Cl; 5, R(1) = Ph, R(2) = Cl; 6, R(1) = Ph, R(2) = F; 7, R(1) = Ph, R(2) = Br; 8, R(1) = Ph, R(2) = N3; 9, R(1) = Ph, R(2) = NCO; 10, R(1) = Ph, R(2) = NCS; 11, R(1) = Me, R(2) = Cl). In addition, the related ionic compound 12 was synthesized, which contains a cationic five-coordinate silicon(IV) complex with two bidentate monoanionic N,S-pyridine-2-thiolato ligands and one phenyl group (counterion: I(-)). Compounds 4-12 were characterized by elemental analyses, NMR spectroscopic studies in the solid state and in solution, and crystal structure analyses (except 7). These structural investigations were performed with a special emphasis on the sophisticated stereochemistry of these compounds. These experimental investigations were complemented by computational studies, including bonding analyses based on relativistic density functional theory.

Biological studies of new organotin(IV) complexes of thioamide ligands

New organotin(IV) complexes with heterocyclic thioamides 2-mercapto-benzothiazole (Hmbzt), 5-chloro-2-mercapto-benzothiazole (Hcmbzt) and 2-mercapto-benzoxazole (Hmbzo) of formulae [(C(6)H(5))(3)Sn(mbzt)] (1), [(C(6)H(5))(3)Sn(cmbzt)] (3) and [(C(6)H(5))(2)Sn(cmbzt)(2)] (4), together with the already known [(C(6)H(5))(3)Sn(mbzo)] (2), [(n-C(4)H(9))(2)Sn(cmbzt)(2)] (5) and [(CH(3))(2)Sn(cmbzt)(2)] (6) were used to study their influence on the peroxidation of oleic acid. The influence of complexes (3)-(6) upon peroxidation of oleic acid showed that the formation of reactive radicals caused the initiation of the chain radical oxidation of the substrate. The influence of complexes (1)-(6) upon the catalytic peroxidation of linoleic acid by the enzyme lipoxygenase (LOX) was also studied and compared to those of cisplatin. Compounds (1)-(6) were finally tested for in vitro cytotoxicity against leiomyosarcoma cells.

Synthesis, Structural Characterization, and Biological Studies of Six- and Five-Coordinate Organotin(IV) Complexes with the Thioamides 2-Mercaptobenzothiazole, 5-Chloro-2-mercaptobenzothiazole, and 2-Mercaptobenzoxazole

Organotin(IV) complexes with the formulas [(C6H5)3Sn(mbzt)] (1), [(C6H5)3Sn(cmbzt)] (3), and [(C6H5)2Sn(cmbzt)2] (4) (Hmbzt = 2-mercaptobenzothiazole and Hcmbzt = 5-chloro-2-mercaptobenzothiazole) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis; FT-IR, Raman, 1H, 13C, and 119Sn NMR, and Mössbauer spectroscopic techniques; and X-ray crystallography at various temperatures. The crystal structures of complexes 1, 3, and 4 were determined by X-ray diffraction at room temperature [295(1) or 293(2) K]. The complexes [(C6H5)3Sn(mbzo)] (2) and [(n-C4H9)2Sn(cmbzt)2] (5) (Hmbzo = 2-mercaptobenzoxazole) were synthesized by new improved methods, and their structures were determined at low temperature [100(1) K] and compared to those solved at room temperature. Comparison with {(CH3)2Sn(cmbzt)2]} (6), already reported, was also attempted. The influence of temperature on the geometry of the complexes is discussed. In the cases of complexes 1-3, three carbon atoms from phenyl groups and one sulfur atom and one nitrogen atom from thione ligands form a tetrahedrally distorted trigonal-bipyramidal geometry around the five-coordinate tin(IV) ion. In complexes 4-6, two carbon atoms from aryl groups and two sulfur atoms and two nitrogen atoms from thione ligands form a distorted tetrahedral geometry, tending toward octahedral, around the six-coordinate tin(IV) ions, with trans-C2, cis-N2, and cis-S2 configurations. Although the C-Sn and S-Sn bond distances are found to be constant in compounds 1-6, their N-Sn bond lengths vary significantly (from 2.635 to 3.078 A), with the longer distances found in the cases of five-coordinate complexes 1-3.

Dimers of and Tautomerism between 2-Pyrimidinethiol and 2(1H)-Pyrimidinethione: A Density Functional Theory (DFT) Study

Density functional theory (BLYP, B3LYP, B3P86, B3PW91) with the 6-31+G(d,p), 6-311+G(d,p), and cc-pVTZ basis sets has been used to calculate structural parameters, relative energies, and vibrational spectra of 2-pyrimidinethiol (1) and 2(1H)-pyrimidinethione (2) and their hydrogen-bonded homodimers (C(2) 3, C(2h) [4](double dagger), C(2h) 5), monohydrates, and dihydrates and a heterodimer (6). Several transition state structures proposed for the tautomerization process have also been examined. At the B3PW91/6-311+G(d,p)//B3PW91/6-31+G(d,p) level of theory 2-pyrimidinethiol (1) is predicted to be 3.41 kcal/mol more stable (E(rel)) than 2(1H)-pyrimidinethione (2) in the gas phase and 2 is predicted to be 6.47 kcal/mol more stable than 1 in aqueous medium. An unfavorable planar intramolecular strained four center transition state (TS1) for the tautomerization of 1 and 2 in the gas-phase lies 29.07 kcal/mol higher in energy than 2-pyrimidinethiol (1). The C(2) 2-pyrimidinethiol dimer (3) is 6.84 kcal/mol lower in energy than the C(2) homodimer transition state structure ([11](double dagger)) that connects dimers 3 and 4. Transition state [11](double dagger) provides a facile pathway for tautomerization between 1 and 2 in the gas phase (monomer-dimer promoted tautomerization). The hydrogen bonded 2-pyrimidinethiol- - -H(2)O and 2-pyrimidinethiol- - -2H(2)O structures are predicted to be 1.27 and 1.55 kcal/mol, respectively, higher in energy than 2(1H)-pyrimidinethione- - -H(2)O and 2(1H)-pyrimidinethione- - -2H(2)O. Water promoted tautomerization via cyclic transition states involving one water molecule (TS- - -H(2)O, [12](double dagger)) and two water molecules (TS- - -2H(2)O, [13](double dagger)) lie 11.42 and 11.44 kcal/mol, respectively, higher in energy than 2-pyrimidinethiol- - -H(2)O and 2-pyrimidinethiol- - -2H(2)O. Thus, the hydrated transition states [12](double dagger) and [13](double dagger) are involved in the tautomerism between 1 and 2 in aqueous medium.

DFT Calculations of the Electric Field Gradient at the Tin Nucleus as a Support of Structural Interpretation by119Sn Mössbauer Spectroscopy

DFT calculations, using an all-electron basis set and with full geometry optimization, were performed on 34 Sn(II) and Sn(IV) compounds of known structure and (119)Sn Mössbauer parameters, to obtain the theoretical values of the electric field gradient components, V(xx), V(yy), and V(zz), at the tin nucleus. These were used to determine the quantity V = V(zz)[1+ 1/3((V(xx) - V(yy))/((V(zz))(2)](1/2), for each investigated compound, which is related to the quadrupole splitting (DeltaE) parameter according to DeltaE = 1/2eQV, where e is the electronic charge and Q is the quadrupole moment of the tin nucleus. The linear fitting of the correlation plot of the experimental DeltaE, versus the corresponding calculated V values, produced a slope that is equal to 0.93 +/- 0.03 and a correlation coefficient R = 0.982. The value of Q obtained, 15.2 +/- 4.4 fm(2), is in agreement with that previously experimentally determined or calculated by analogous procedures. The calculation method is able to establish the sign of the electric field gradient component V(zz), in agreement with the sign of DeltaE determined experimentally by Mössbauer-Zeeman spectroscopy. The calculated structural parameters are in good agreement with the corresponding experimental data, determined by X-ray crystallography in the solid state, with average structural deviations of about 3 % for bond lengths and angles in the tin environment. Calculated values of DeltaE were obtained from the calibration fitting constant and from the values of V. By comparing experimental and calculated DeltaE parameters, the structure assignment of configurational isomers was successful in two test cases, in agreement with the experimental X-ray crystallographic structures. These results indicate that the method can be used as a tool to support the routine structure interpretation of tin compounds by (119)Sn Mössbauer spectroscopy.

Syntheses, characterization, and X-ray crystal structures of diorganotin(IV) derivatives of 2-pyridinethiolato-N-oxide

The diorganotin(IV) dichloride reacts with sodium 2-pyridinethiolato-N-oxide in a 1:1 ratio to produce [Me2SnCl(2-SpyO)] (1), [Et2SnCl(2-SpyO)] (2), [Bu2SnCl(2-SpyO)] (3), [Ph2SnCl(2-SpyO)] (4), and [(PhCH2)2SnCl(2- SpyO)] (5). The new complexes have been characterized by elemental analysis and IR and NMR (1H, 119Sn, and 13C) spectroscopy. On the basis of 119Sn NMR data the effective coordination number in solution is five. The structures 1 and 4 have been confirmed by X-ray crystallography. Crystals of 1 are triclinic with space group P[Formula: see text] and those of 4 are monoclinic, P21/n. The tin environment is a distorted trigonal bipyramid with the Cl and oxygen atoms in apical positions. Both complexes exhibit strong π–π stacking interactions. Synthesis, structural characterization and in vitro cytotoxicity of organotin(IV) derivatives of heterocyclic thioamides, 2-mercaptobenzothiazole, 5-chloro-2-mercaptobenzothiazole, 3-methyl-2-mercaptobenzothiazole and 2-mercaptonicotinic acid

Five new organotin(IV) molecules with the heterocyclic thioamides; 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (Hmbzt), 5-chloro-2-mercaptobenzothiazole (Hcmbzt), 3-methyl-2-mercaptobenzothiazole (mmbzt) and 2-mercaptonicotinic acid (H(2)mna) of formulae [(n-C(4)H(9))(2)Sn(mbzt)(2)] (1), [(C(6)H(5))(2)Sn(mbzt)(2)] (2), [(CH(3))(2)Sn(cmbzt)(2)].1.7(H(2)O)] (3), [(n-C(4)H(9))(2)SnCl(2)(mmbzt)(2).(CH(2)Cl(2))] (4) and [[(C(6)H(5))(3)Sn](2)(mna).[(CH(3))(2)CO]] (5) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, 1H-, 13C-NMR, FT-IR and Mössbauer spectroscopic techniques. Crystal structures of molecules 1, 3 and 5 have been determined by X-ray diffraction at 173(1) K (1 and 5) and 293(2) K (3). Compound 1 C(22)H(26)N(2)S(4)Sn, is monoclinic, space group C2/c, a=44.018(2), b=8.8864(5), c=12.8633(7) A, beta=104.195(5) degrees, Z=8. Compound 3 is also monoclinic, space group P2(1)/c and a=17.128(2) A, b=17.919(2) A, c=7.3580(10) A, beta=98.290(10) degrees, Z=4. In both molecules 1 and 3, two carbon atoms from aryl groups, two sulfur and two nitrogen atoms from thione ligands form a distorted octahedral geometry around tin(IV) with trans-C(2), cis-N(2), cis-S(2) configurations. Compound 5 C(45)H(39)NO(3)SSn(2) is monoclinic, space group P2(1)/n, a=9.1148(2) A, b=29.2819(6), c=15.5556(4) A, beta=106.2851(9) degrees, Z=4. Complex 5 contains two [(C(6)H(5))(3)Sn(IV)] moieties linked by a double deprotonated 2-mercaptonicotinic acid (H(2)mna). Both tin(IV) ions are five coordinated. This complex is the an example of a pentacoordinated Ph(3)SnXY system with an axial-equatorial arrangement of the phenyl groups at Sn(1) atom. Compounds 1, 3 and 5 were tested for in vitro cytotoxicity against the cancer cell line of sarcoma cells (mesenchymal tissue) from the Wistar rat, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (benzo[a]pyrene) carcinogenesis. Compound 5 exhibits strong cytotoxic activity, while complexes 1 and 3 show less cytotoxic activity.
