Abstract
A practical application of the UCD-PHIM ligand in the copper-catalyzed asymmetric A3 coupling is reported for aromatic, alkenylic, and alkynylic aldehydes under mild reaction conditions, low catalytic loading, and at ambient temperature. A broad range of aldehydes, secondary amines with a cheaper ethyne equivalent, 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol, was explored and enantioselectivities of up to 99% ee were obtained. The importance of (i) axial chirality and central chirality, (ii) imidazoline moiety over oxazoline moiety, and (iii) phosphine unit is investigated for A3 coupling by synthesizing and testing a series of related ligands to UCD-PHIM.

Abstract
A new addition to the rational design of sterically and electrically easily tunable chiral bis(imidazoline) ligands from chiral amino alcohols has been developed. Vast structural variation of chiral bis(imidazoline) ligands can be simply achieved by the choice of both the 1,2-amino alcohol and its N-1 R1 substituent. A small library of chiral bisimidazolines (1 a-h) has been constructed. The method has provided an easy and simplified route to a diverse set of air-stable and water-tolerant chiral bis(imidazoline) ligands on 10 g scales. The dual Lewis Acid/Brønsted base catalytic system generated from the (S)-1 a/Cu(OTf)2 complex and Et3N was able to catalyze Henry reactions between aldehydes and nitromethane effectively at room temperature, and also to tolerate a wide scope of aldehydes with excellent enantiomeric excesses. Not only aromatic aldehydes but also aliphatic aldehydes afforded the nitroalcohol products, with enantiomeric excesses in the 93-98% range. This dual catalytic system is among the most effective systems so far reported for the asymmetric parent Henry reactions. This work also represents the first members of the class of chiral bisimidazolines to have been demonstrated to achieve excellent enantioselectivities.

Abstract
A series of cationic palladium complexes of general formula [Pd(Me)(MeCN)(N-N)][PF(6)] (N-N = (phen) 1 a, 4,7-dichloro-1,10-phenanthroline (4,7-Cl(2)-phen) 2 a, 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (4,7-Ph(2)-phen) 3 a, 4-methyl-1,10-phenanthroline (4-Me-phen) 4 a, 4,7-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline (4,7-Me(2)-phen) 5 a, 5,5,6,6-tetrafluoro-5,6-dihydro-1,10-phenanthroline (F(4)-phen) 6 a, containing different substituted phenanthroline ligands, have been prepared from the corresponding neutral chloro derivatives [Pd(Me)(Cl)(N-N)], (1 b-6 b). The X-ray crystal structure of [Pd(Cl)(2)(4,7-Cl(2)-phen)] (2 b') was determined. DFT calculations show that the electron density on the metal is tuned by the substituents on the ligands. The catalytic behavior of complexes 1 a-6 a in the CO/styrene and CO/p-Me-styrene copolymerizations was studied in detail, showing that the generated catalysts are active for at least 90 h, yielding copolymers of high molecular weight. A firm correlation between the electron density on palladium on the one hand and the catalytic activity of the complexes and the molecular weight and the stereochemistry of the polyketones synthesized on the other hand has been established: the catalyst containing the F(4)-phen is thus far the most active among those tested, yielding the syndiotactic CO/styrene copolymer with a stereoregularity of 96 % (uu triad) and with an M(w) value of 1 000 000.

Abstract
A convenient new method for the preparation of 2,2'-biimidazolines is reported. Amino alcohols were reacted with dimethyl oxalate, and the product hydroxy amides converted into chloroamides by reaction with thionyl chloride. Treatment with PCl5, followed by diamines (ethanediamine, propane-1,3-diamine, 2,2-dimethylpropane-1,3-diamine) furnished a series of enantiopure tricyclic biimidazolines. Complexes of two of the ligands with PdCl2 were prepared and their X-ray crystal structures were determined. The biimidazolines were tested as ligands for asymmetric Pd-catalysed allylations. Moderate enantioselectivity (up to 80% ee) was found for the reaction of dimethyl malonate with diphenylallyl acetate, with the 5,7,5 fused tricyclic systems outperforming the 5,6,5 analogues. The corresponding reaction of pentenyl acetate gave lower enantioselectivity (44-57% ee), and proved very sensitive to the donor strength of the ligands, the stronger donors giving lower yields. The results provide a further demonstration of the value of the 'tunability' of imidazoline ligands.
