Development of nanoparticle stabilized polymer nanocontainers with high content of the encapsulated active agent and their application in water-borne anticorrosive coatings

Fabrication of dual anti-corrosive polyaniline microcapsules via Pickering emulsion for active corrosion protection of steel

A novel kind of inhibitor-loaded polyaniline (PANI) microcapsule was prepared by Pickering emulsion photopolymerization using polyaniline particles as the Pickering emulsifier. In our strategy, water-dispersible polyaniline nanoparticles were firstly synthesized using a micelle template method and used to stabilize oil-in-water emulsions, in which the oil phase contained photo-crosslinkable and pH sensitive monomers and a photo-initiator. Under UV light, the pH-responsive monomers underwent photo-polymerization and crosslinking and converted to microcapsule shells. During this process, polyaniline nanoparticles were trapped in the microcapsule shells, leading to the formation of PANI microcapsules. The structure and morphology of the synthesized PANI microcapsules were analyzed using FTIR spectroscopy, SEM, and EDX mapping. The inhibitor (mercaptobenzothiazole, MBT) was subsequently incorporated into the PANI microcapsule as a functional core and demonstrated pH-sensitive releasing behavior. With the anti-corrosive PANI as the microcapsule wall and the inhibitor MBT as the core, the as-prepared MBT loaded PANI (MBT@PANI) microcapsule could afford dual corrosion protection, allowing smart protection of metals when exposed to corrosive conditions. The MBT@PANI microcapsules were embedded in UV-cured coating for protecting steel. The corrosion protection performance of the coating with MBT@PANI microcapsules was evaluated using the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy technique and salt spray test, which demonstrated the synergistic inhibition effect of the PANI wall and the loaded MBT in improving anti-corrosion performance of the coating.

Gold Nanobeads with Enhanced Absorbance for Improved Sensitivity in Competitive Lateral Flow Immunoassays

BACKGROUND

Colloidal gold based lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) commonly suffers from relatively low detection sensitivity due to the insufficient brightness of conventional gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with the size of 20-40 nm.

METHODS

Herein, three kinds of gold nanobeads (GNBs) with the size of 94 nm, 129 nm, and 237 nm, were synthesized by encapsulating numerous hydrophobic AuNPs (10 nm) into polymer matrix. The synthesized GNBs exhibited the enhanced colorimetric signal intensity compared with 20-40 nm AuNPs. The effects of the size of GNBs on the sensitivity of LFIA with competitive format were assessed.

RESULTS

The results showed that the LFIA using 129 nm GNBs as amplified signal probes exhibits the best sensitivity for fumonisin B1 (FB1) detection with a cut-off limit (for visual qualitative detection) at 125 ng/mL, a half maximal inhibitory concentration at 11.27 ng/mL, and a detection limit at 1.76 ng/mL for detection of real corn samples, which are 8-, 3.82-, and 2.89-fold better than those of conventional AuNP40-based LFIA, respectively. The developed GNB-LFIA exhibited negligible cross-reactions with other common mycotoxins. In addition, the accuracy, precision, reliability, and practicability were demonstrated by determining real corn samples.

CONCLUSIONS

All in all, the proposed study provides a promising strategy to enhance the sensitivity of competitive LFIA via using the GNBs as amplified signal probes.

pH dependent degradation properties of lactide based 3D microchamber arrays for sustained cargo release

Encapsulation of small water soluble molecules is important in a large variety of applications, ranging from medical substance releasing implants in the field of medicine over release of catalytically active substances in the field of chemical processing to anti-corrosion agents in industry. In this work polylactic acid (PLA) based hollow-structured microchamber (MC) arrays are fabricated via one-step dip coating of a silicone rubber stamp into PLA solution. These PLA MCs are able to retain small water soluble molecules (Rhodamine B) stably entrapped within aqueous environments. It is shown, that degradation of PLA MCs strongly depends on environmental conditions like surrounding pH and follows first order degradation kinetics. This pH dependent PLA MC degradation can be utilized to control the release kinetics of encapsulated cargo.

Templating Interfacial Nanoparticle Assemblies via in Situ Techniques

In situ surface modification of nanoparticles has a rich industrial history, but in recent years, it has also received increased attention in the field of directed self-assembly. In situ techniques rely on components within a Pickering emulsion system, such as amphiphiles that act as hydrophobizers or ionic species that screen charges, to drive the interfacial assembly of particles. Instead of stepwise procedures to chemically tune the particle wettability, in situ methods use elements already present within the system to alter the nanoparticle interfacial behavior, often depending on Coulombic interactions to simplify operations. The surface modifications are not contingent on specific chemical reactions, which further enables a multitude of possible nanoparticles to be used within a given system. In recent studies, in situ methods have been combined with external means of shaping the interface to produce materials with high interfacial areas and complex geometries. These systems have facilely tunable properties, enabling their use in an extensive array of applications. In this feature article, in honor of the late Prof. Helmuth Möhwald, we review how in situ techniques have influenced the development of soft, advanced materials, covering the fundamental interfacial phenomena with an outlook on materials science.

TO/TMMP-TMTGE Double-Healing Composite Containing a Transesterification Reversible Matrix and Tung Oil-Loaded Microcapsules for Active Self-Healing

Thermoset epoxies are widely used due to their excellent properties, but conventional epoxies require a complicated and time-consuming curing process, and they cannot self-healed, which limits their applications in self-healing materials. Extrinsic and intrinsic self-healing materials are applied in various fields due to their respective characteristics, but there is a lack of comparison between the two types of healing systems. Based on this, a thiol-epoxide click reaction catalyzed by an organic base was introduced to achieve the efficient preparation of thiol-epoxy. Furthermore, tung oil (TO)-loaded microcapsules were introduced into the thiol-epoxy matrix of dynamic transesterification to obtain a TO/TMMP-TMTGE self-healing composite with an intrinsic-extrinsic double-healing system. For comparison, a TMMP-TMTGE self-healing material with an intrinsic healing system was also prepared, which contained only thiol and epoxy curing chemistries. The effect of the core/shell ratio on the morphology, average particle size, and core content of TO-loaded microcapsules was studied. It was found that when the core/shell ratio was 3:1, the average particle size of the microcapsules was about 99.8 μm, and the microcapsules showed good monodispersity, as well as a core content of about 58.91%. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results showed that the TO core was successfully encapsulated and remained effective after encapsulation. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), tensile tests, and electrochemical tests were carried out for the two types of self-healing materials. The results showed that the TO/TMMP-TMTGE composite and TMMP-TMTGE material both had self-healing properties. In addition, the TO/TMMP-TMTGE composite was superior to the TMMP-TMTGE material due to its better self-healing performance, mechanical strength, and corrosion protection performance.

Fabrication of UV-Triggered Liquid-Repellent Coatings with Long-Term Self-Repairing Performance

The biomimetic fabrication of Nepenthes as a new class of liquid-repellent surface materials has attracted much attention recently, but there still remains big challenges, for example, short-serving life, instability, and so forth. Herein, we develop a novel strategy to fabricate robust slippery liquid-repellent coating by the synthesis and use of silicon oil-contained ultraviolet-responsive microcapsules. Owing to the physical and chemical inertness of silicon oil and the substantial randomly dispersed microcapsules in the coating, this nepenthes-like liquid-repellent coating can not only endure different harsh environments but also have excellent long-term self-healing functions.

In-situ NIR-laser mediated bioactive substance delivery to single cell for EGFP expression based on biocompatible microchamber-arrays

Controlled drug delivery and gene expression is required for a large variety of applications including cancer therapy, wound healing, cell migration, cell modification, cell-analysis, reproductive and regenerative medicine. Controlled delivery of precise amounts of drugs to a single cell is especially interesting for cell and tissue engineering as well as therapeutics and has until now required the application of micro-pipettes, precisely placed dispersed drug delivery vehicles, or injections close to or into the cell. Here we present surface bound micro-chamber arrays able to store small hydrophilic molecules for prolonged times in subaqueous conditions supporting spatiotemporal near infrared laser mediated release. The micro-chambers (MCs) are composed of biocompatible and biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA). Biocompatible gold nanoparticles are employed as light harvesting agents to facilitate photothermal MC opening. The degree of photothermal heating is determined by numerical simulations utilizing optical properties of the MC, and confirmed by Brownian motion measurements of laser-irradiated micro-particles exhibiting similar optical properties like the MCs. The amount of bioactive small molecular cargo (doxycycline) from local release is determined by fluorescence spectroscopy and gene expression in isolated C2C12 cells via enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) biosynthesis.

Polysulfone/SiO2 Hybrid Shell Microcapsules Synthesized by the Combination of Pickering Emulsification and the Solvent Evaporation Technique and Their Application in Self-Lubricating Composites

Lubricant oil-filled polysulfone/SiO₂ (PSF/SiO₂) hybrid shell microcapsules are prepared by the combination of Pickering emulsification and the solvent evaporation technique. Silica particles are used as stabilizers. The structure and properties of the microcapsules are influenced by the silica particle concentration, agitation speed, and encapsulation temperature. The formation of PSF/SiO₂ hybrid microcapsules is confirmed by a scanning electron microscope, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermal gravimetric analysis. The resulting microcapsules prepared at the optimum synthetic parameters show a spherical, ideal structure with a rough outer surface, mean diameter of 5.0 ± 0.6 μm, shell thickness of 0.83 μm, core content of 50.5 wt %, and excellent thermal stability with an initial evaporating temperature of 250 °C. The synthesized microcapsules are embedded into epoxy for application in self-lubricating composites. Investigated by friction and wear tests, the tribological properties of the self-lubricating microcapsule-incorporated epoxy composites attain a significant improvement.

Photothermal Conversion Triggered Precisely Targeted Healing of Epoxy Resin Based on Thermoreversible Diels-Alder Network and Amino-Functionalized Carbon Nanotubes

In the present work, we demonstrated the recyclability and precisely targeted reparability of amino functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes-epoxy resin based on dynamic covalent Diels-Alder (DA) network (NH₂-MWCNTs/DA-epoxy) by exploring the photothermal conversion of CNTs to trigger the reactions of dynamic chemical bonds. The covalent cross-linked networks of NH₂-MWCNTs/DA-epoxy resin change their topology to linear polymer by thermally activated reverse Diels-Alder (r-DA) reactions at high temperatures, which endues the resin with almost 100% recyclability. The self-healing property of the epoxy resin was confirmed by the complete elimination of cracks after the reconstruction of DA network induced by heating or near-infrared (NIR) irradiation. For heat-triggered self-healing process, heat energy may also act on those uninjured parts of the resin and cause the dissociation of the whole DA network. Therefore, redundant r-DA and DA reactions, which have no contribution to self-healing, are also triggered during thermal treatment, resulting in not only a waste of energy but also the deformation of the sample under external force. Meanwhile, for the NIR-triggered self-healing process, the samples can maintain well their original shape without observable deformation after irradiation. The NIR-triggered healing process, which uses MWCNTs as the photothermal convertor, have very good regional controllability by simply tuning the MWCNTs content, the distance from NIR laser source to sample, and the laser power. The injured samples can be locally repaired with high precision and efficiency without an obvious influence on those uninjured parts.

Design and Fabrication of a Novel Stimulus-Feedback Anticorrosion Coating Featured by Rapid Self-Healing Functionality for the Protection of Magnesium Alloy

Corrosion potential stimulus-responsive smart nanocontainers (CP-SNCs) are designed and synthesized based on the installation of the supramolecular assemblies (bipyridinium ⊂ water-soluble pillar[5]arenes) onto the exterior surface of magnetic nanovehicles (Fe₃O₄@mSiO₂), linked by disulfide linkers. The supramolecular assemblies with high binding affinity as gatekeepers effectively block the encapsulated organic corrosion inhibitor, 8-hydroxyquinoline (8-HQ), within the mesopores of Fe₃O₄@mSiO₂. When the corrosion potential of the magnesium alloy (-1.5 V vs SHE) is exerted, 8-HQ is released instantly because of the cleavage of disulfide linkers and the removal of the supramolecular assemblies. CP-SNCs were incorporated into the hybrid organic-inorganic sol-gel coating to construct a corrosion potential stimulus-feedback anticorrosion coating (CP-SFAC) that was then deposited on the magnesium alloy, AZ31B. With the aid of a magnetic field, CP-SNCs were gathered in the proximity of the surface of AZ31B. CP-SFAC showed a satisfactory anticorrosion performance, more importantly, through the evaluation of microzone electrochemical techniques. CP-SFAC presented the rapid self-healing functionality when the localized corrosion occurred. Shortening the distance between CP-SNCs and the surface of AZ31B enhances the availability of the incorporated CP-SNCs and makes most of the CP-SNCs to timely respond to the corrosion potential stimulus and facilitates the formation of a compact molecular protective film before the corrosion products pile up. The characteristics of fast response time and quick self-healing rate meet the requirements of the magnesium alloy for self-healing in local regions.

Polylactic Acid Sealed Polyelectrolyte Multilayer Microchambers for Entrapment of Salts and Small Hydrophilic Molecules Precipitates

Efficient depot systems for entrapment and storage of small water-soluble molecules are of high demand for wide variety of applications ranging from implant based drug delivery in medicine and catalysis in chemical processes to anticorrosive systems in industry where surface-mediated active component delivery is required on a time and site specific manner. This work reports the fabrication of individually sealed hollow-structured polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) microchamber arrays based on layer-by-layer self-assembly as scaffolds and microcontact printing. These PEM chambers are composed out of biocompatible polyelectrolytes and sealed by a monolayer of hydrophobic biocompatible and biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA). Coating the chambers with hydrophobic PLA allows for entrapment of a microair-bubble in each chamber that seals and hence drastically reduces the PEM permeability. PLA@PEM microchambers are proven to enable prolonged subaqueous storage of small hydrophilic salts and molecules such as crystalline NaCl, doxicycline, and fluorescent dye rhodamine B. The presented microchambers are able to entrap air bubbles and demonstrate a novel strategy for entrapment, storage, and protection of micropackaged water-soluble substances in precipitated form. These chambers allow triggered release as demonstrated by ultrasound responsiveness of the chambers. Low-frequency ultrasound exposure is utilized for microchamber opening and payload release.

Continuous Fabrication of Hierarchical and Asymmetric Bijel Microparticles, Fibers, and Membranes by Solvent Transfer-Induced Phase Separation (STRIPS)

Continuous generation of hierarchical and asymmetric bijels based on solvent-transfer-induced phase separation (STRIPS) is demonstrated. In STRIPS, phase separation is induced by solvent extraction from an initially homogeneous ternary mixture, and bicontinuous morphology is stabilized by inter-facial attachment of nano-particles, which are functionalized in situ. STRIPS allows stable bijel formation from a wide variety of liquids and particles.

Influence of Functionalization of Nanocontainers on Self-Healing Anticorrosive Coatings

Feedback coating based on pH-induced release of inhibitor from organosilyl-functionalized containers is considered as a compelling candidate to achieve smart self-healing corrosion protection. Four key factors that determine the overall coating performance include (1) the uptake and release capacity of containers, (2) prevention of the premature leakage, (3) compatibility of containers in coating matrix, and (4) cost and procedure simplicity consideration. The critical influence introduced by organosilyl-functionalization of containers is systematically demonstrated by investigating MCM-41 silica nanoparticles modified with ethylenediamine (en), en-4-oxobutanoic acid salt (en-COO(-)), and en-triacetate (en-(COO(-))3) with higher and lower organic contents. The properties of the modified silica nanoparticles as containers were mainly characterized by solid-state (13)C nuclear magnetic resonance, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, N2 sorption, thermogravimetric analysis, small-angle X-ray scattering, dynamic light scattering, and UV-vis spectroscopy. Finally, the self-healing ability and anticorrosive performances of hybrid coatings were examined through scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). We found that en-(COO(-))3-type functionalization with content of only 0.23 mmol/g performed the best as a candidate for establishing pH-induced release system because the resulting capped and loaded (C-L) functionalized silica nanocontainers (FSNs) exhibit high loading (26 wt %) and release (80%) capacities for inhibitor, prevention of premature leakage (less than 2%), good dispersibility in coating matrix, and cost effectiveness.

Aluminum Nanoarrays for Plasmon-Enhanced Light Harvesting

The practical limits of coinage-metal-based plasmonic materials demand sustainable, abundant alternatives with a wide plasmonic range of the solar energy spectrum. Aluminum (Al) is an emerging alternative, but its instability in aqueous environments critically limits its applicability to various light-harvesting systems. Here, we report a design strategy to achieve a robust platform for plasmon-enhanced light harvesting using Al nanostructures. The incorporation of mussel-inspired polydopamine nanolayers in the Al nanoarrays allowed for the reliable use of Al plasmonic resonances in a highly corrosive photocatalytic redox solution and provided nanoscale arrangement of organic photosensitizers on Al surfaces. The Al-photosensitizer core-shell assemblies exhibited plasmon-enhanced light absorption, which resulted in a 300% efficiency increase in photo-to-chemical conversion. Our strategy enables stable and advanced use of aluminum for plasmonic light harvesting.

Stimuli-responsive Pickering emulsions: recent advances and potential applications

Pickering emulsions possess many advantages over traditional surfactant stabilized emulsions. For example, Pickering emulsions impart better stability against coalescence and, in many cases, are biologically compatible and environmentally friendly. These characteristics open the door for their use in a variety of industries spanning petroleum, food, biomedicine, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. Depending on the application, rapid, but controlled stabilization and destabilization of an emulsion may be necessary. As a result, Pickering emulsions with stimuli-responsive properties have, in recent years, received a considerable amounts of attention. This paper provides a concise and comprehensive review of Pickering emulsion systems that possess the ability to respond to an array of external triggers, including pH, temperature, CO2 concentration, light intensity, ionic strength, and magnetic field. Potential applications for which stimuli-responsive Pickering emulsion systems would be of particular value, such as emulsion polymerization, enhanced oil recovery, catalyst recovery, and cosmetics, are discussed.

Self-healing anti-corrosion coatings based on polymers of intrinsic microporosity for the protection of aluminum alloy

PIM1 is used as containers for corrosion inhibitors (BTA). Simple dip coating with BTA loaded PIM1 and a commercial top paint results in a self-healing anti-corrosion coating for aluminum alloy.

Acid and alkaline dual stimuli-responsive mechanized hollow mesoporous silica nanoparticles as smart nanocontainers for intelligent anticorrosion coatings

The present paper introduces an intelligent anticorrosion coating, based on the mechanized hollow mesoporous silica nanoparticles (HMSs) as smart nanocontainers implanted into the self-assembled nanophase particles (SNAP) coating. As the key component, smart nanocontainers assembled by installing supramolecular nanovalves in the form of the bistable pseudorotaxanes on the external surface of HMSs realize pH-responsive controlled release for corrosion inhibitor, caffeine molecules. The smart nanocontainers encapsulate caffeine molecules at neutral pH, and release the molecules either under acidic or alkaline conditions, which make them spontaneously experience the pH excursions arisen from corrosion process and respond quickly. The intelligent anticorrosion coating was deposited on the surface of aluminum alloy AA2024 and investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET). Compared with the pure SNAP coating, the well-dispersed smart nanocontainers not only delay the penetration rate of corrosive species but also repair damaged aluminum oxide layer to maintain the long term anticorrosion behavior. From the experimental results of SVET, the smart nanocontainers with the acid and alkaline dual stimuli-responsive characteristics can simultaneously suppress corrosion activities on microanodic and microcathodic regions, demonstrating an excellent self-healing functionality.

25th anniversary article: Dynamic interfaces for responsive encapsulation systems

Encapsulation systems are urgently needed both as micrometer and sub-micrometer capsules for active chemicals' delivery, to encapsulate biological objects and capsules immobilized on surfaces for a wide variety of advanced applications. Methods for encapsulation, prolonged storage and controllable release are discussed in this review. Formation of stimuli responsive systems via layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly, as well as via mobile chemical bonding (hydrogen bonds, chemisorptions) and formation of special dynamic stoppers are presented. The most essential advances of the systems presented are multifunctionality and responsiveness to a multitude of stimuli - the possibility of formation of multi-modal systems. Specific examples of advanced applications - drug delivery, diagnostics, tissue engineering, lab-on-chip and organ-on-chip, bio-sensors, membranes, templates for synthesis, optical systems, and antifouling, self-healing materials and coatings - are provided. Finally, we try to outline emerging developments.
