Electron doping by charge transfer at LaFeO3/Sm2CuO4 epitaxial interfaces

ZnO Nanorods on a LaAlO3 -SrTiO3 Interface: Hybrid 1D-2D Diodes with Engineered Electronic Properties

Integrating nanomaterials with different dimensionalities and properties is a versatile approach toward realizing new functionalities in advanced devices. Here, a novel diode-type heterostructure is reported consisting of 1D semiconducting ZnO nanorods and 2D metallic LaAlO3-SrTiO3 interface. Tunable insulator-to-metal transitions, absent in the individual components, are observed as a result of the competing temperature-dependent conduction mechanisms. Detailed transport analysis reveals direct tunneling at low bias, Fowler-Nordheim tunneling at high forward bias, and Zener breakdown at high reverse bias. Our results highlight the rich electronic properties of such artificial diodes with hybrid dimensionalities, and the design principle may be generalized to other nanomaterials.

Atomically flat ultrathin cobalt ferrite islands

A route for fabricating structurally perfect cobalt ferrite magnetic nanostructures is demonstrated. Ultrathin islands of up to 100 μm(2) with atomically flat surfaces and free from antiphase boundaries are developed. The extremely low defect concentration leads to a robust magnetic order, even for thicknesses below 1 nm, and exceptionally large magnetic domains. This approach allows the evaluation of the influence of specific extrinsic effects on domain wall pinning.

Symmetry lowering in extreme-electron-density perovskite quantum wells

We report on structural distortions in extreme-electron density (∼6×10(14)  cm(-2)) confined quantum wells of SrTiO3 embedded in GdTiO3. Sr-column displacements are measured using high-angle annular dark-field imaging in scanning transmission electron microscopy. Using thick SrTiO3 layers as a reference, orthorhombic-like Sr-site displacements are observed when SrTiO3 quantum wells are thinner than 4 SrO layers, in precise agreement with an experimentally observed metal-to-insulator transition. It is shown that the structural displacements are absent in thicker quantum wells, even in the immediate proximity to the orthorhombic GdTiO3. The results are discussed in the context of strong electron correlations in this system.
