Recent advances in photoluminescent fluorescent probe technology for food flavor compounds analysis

The real-time, precise qualitative and quantitative sensing of food flavor compounds is crucial for ensuring food safety, quality, and consumer acceptance. As indicators for food flavor labeling, it is vital to delve deep into the specific ingredient and content of food flavor compounds to assess the food flavor quality, but still facing huge challenges. Photoluminescent fluorescent probe technology, with fast detection and high sensitivity, has shown immense potentials in detecting food flavor compounds. In this review, the classification and optical sensing mechanism of photoluminescent fluorescent probe technology are described in detail. Besides, challenges in applying photoluminescent fluorescent probe technology to analyze food flavor compounds are outlined to indicate future research directions. We hope this review can provide an insight for the applications of photoluminescent fluorescent probe technology in the evaluation of food flavor quality in future.

Detecting Pb2+ in aqueous environment and live cells by amphiphilic pillar[5]arene-assembled supramolecular sensor based on host-guest charge transfer mechanism

Water-soluble fluorescent chemosensors for lead ion are highly desirable in environmental detection and bioimagery. Based on a water-soluble pillar[5]arene WP5 and imidazolium terminal functionalized 2,2'-bibenzimidazole derivative BIHB, we report a host-guest charge transfer assembly BIHB-2WP5 for sensitive and selective detection of Pb2+ in pure aqueous media. As a result of its high electron-rich cavity, WP5 can bind electron-deficiency guest BIHB with various host/guest stoichiometry to easily tune the microtopography of assembly from nanoparticle to nanocube. In view of the good biocompatibility and sensitivity, the supramolecular assembly BIHB-2WP5 was used as a fluorescent probe for the detection of Pb2+ in living cells and a smartphone Pb2+ detection device was constructed for the in situ test.

Small molecule-based core and shell cross-linked nanoassemblies: from self-assembly and programmed disassembly to biological applications

Supramolecular assemblies of stimuli-responsive amphiphilic molecules have been of utmost interest in targeted drug delivery applications, owing to their capability of sequestering drug molecules in one set of conditions and releasing them in another. To minimize undesired disassembly and stabilize noncovalently encapsulated drug molecules, the strategy of core or shell cross-linking has become a fascinating approach to constructing cross-linked polymeric or small molecule-based nanoassemblies. In this article, we discuss the design and synthetic strategies for cross-linked nanoassemblies from small molecule-based amphiphiles, with robust stability and enhanced drug encapsulation capability. We highlight their potential biomedical applications, particularly in drug or gene delivery, and cell imaging. This feature article offers a comprehensive overview of the recent developments in the application of small molecule-based covalently cross-linked nanocarriers for materials and biomedical applications, which may inspire the use of these materials as a potential drug delivery system for future chemotherapeutic applications.

A Highly Efficient Supramolecular Polymer-Based Singlet Oxygen Generator for Photocatalytic Minisci Alkylation

Supramolecular polymers, with their specific functional units and structures, can effectively enhance the absorption and utilization of light energy, thereby facilitating more efficient photocatalytic organic reactions. In the present work, we constructed a supramolecular polymer consisting of benzothiazole derivatives (BTBP) and cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]). The BTBP monomer, known for its unique chemical structure and properties, has been found to exhibit a remarkable capability in generating singlet oxygen (1O2). As a result of the constraining impact of the macrocyclic molecule, the inclusion of CB[8] resulted in an effective enhancement in the ability to generate 1O2 while forming supramolecular polymer BTBP-CB[8]. When evaluating the quantum yield of 1O2 using Rose Bengal (RB) as a reference photosensitizer (75% in water), BTBP-CB[8] demonstrated an enhanced 1O2 quantum yield compared to BTBP, with an impressive yield of 152.4%, demonstrating that the formation of supramolecular polymer contributes to its ability to generate 1O2. Subsequently, BTBP-CB[8], a highly efficient 1O2 generator, was employed for the photocatalytic Minisci alkylation reaction, resulting in an impressive reaction yield of up to 89%. The supramolecular polymer strategies employed in the construction of photocatalytic systems have exhibited remarkable efficacy in the production of 1O2, underscoring their immense prospects in photocatalysis.

Aggregation-induced emission-active supramolecular polymers: from controlled preparation to applications

Supramolecular polymers are typical self-assemblies, in which repeating monomer units are bonded together with dynamic and reversible noncovalent interactions. Supramolecular polymers can combine the advantages of polymer science and supramolecular chemistry. Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) means that a molecule remains faintly emissive in the dispersed state but intensively luminescent in a highly aggregated state. AIE has brought new opportunities and further development potential to the field of polymeric chemistry. The integration of AIE luminogens with supramolecular interactions can provide new vitality for supramolecular polymers. Therefore, it is essential for scientists to understand the preparation and applications of AIE-active supramolecular polymers. This review focuses on the recent advanced progress in the preparation of AIE-active supramolecular polymers. In addition, we summarize the newly developed supramolecular polymers with an AIE nature and their applications in chemical sensing, and in vitro and in vivo imaging, as well as the visualization of their structure and properties. Finally, the development trends and challenges of AIE-active supramolecular polymers are prospected.

Comprehensive Study of Artificial Light-Harvesting Systems with a Multi-Step Sequential Energy Transfer Mechanism

Artificial light-harvesting systems (LHSs) with a multi-step sequential energy transfer mechanism significantly enhance light energy utilization. Nonetheless, most of these systems exhibit an overall energy transfer efficiency below 80%. Moreover, due to challenges in molecularly aligning multiple donor/acceptor chromophores, systems featuring ≥3-step sequential energy transfer are rarely reported. Here, a series of artificial LHSs is introduced featuring up to 4-step energy transfer mechanism, constructed using a cyclic peptide-based supramolecular scaffold. These LHSs showed remarkably high energy transfer efficiencies (≥90%) and satisfactory fluorescence quantum yields (ranging from 17.6% to 58.4%). Furthermore, the structural robustness of the supramolecular scaffold enables a comprehensive study of these systems, elucidating the associated energy transfer pathways, and identifying additional energy transfer processes beyond the targeted sequential energy transfer. Overall, this comprehensive investigation not only enhances the understanding of these LHSs, but also underscores the versatility of cyclic peptide-based supramolecular scaffolds in advancing energy harvesting technologies.

Supra-Fluorophores: Ultrabright Fluorescent Supramolecular Assemblies Derived from Conventional Fluorophores in Water

Fluorescent organic nanoparticles (NPs) with exceptional brightness hold significant promise for demanding fluorescence bioimaging applications. Although considerable efforts are invested in developing novel organic dyes with enhanced performance, augmenting the brightness of conventional fluorophores is still one of the biggest challenges to overcome. This study presents a supramolecular strategy for constructing ultrabright fluorescent nanoparticles in aqueous media (referred to as "Supra-fluorophores") derived from conventional fluorophores. To achieve this, this course has employed a cylindrical nanoparticle with a hydrophobic microdomain, assembled by a cyclic peptide-diblock copolymer conjugate in water, as a supramolecular scaffold. The noncovalent dispersion of fluorophore moieties within the hydrophobic microdomain of the scaffold effectively mitigates the undesired aggregation-caused quenching and fluorescence quenching by water, resulting in fluorescent NPs with high brightness. This strategy is applicable to a broad spectrum of fluorophore families, covering polyaromatic hydrocarbons, coumarins, boron-dipyrromethenes, cyanines, xanthenes, and squaraines. The resulting fluorescent NPs demonstrate high fluorescence quantum yield (>30%) and brightness per volume (as high as 12 060 m-1 cm-1 nm-3). Moreover, high-performance NPs with emission in the NIR region are constructed, showcasing up to 20-fold increase in both brightness and photostability. This Supra-fluorophore strategy offers a versatile and effective method for transforming existing fluorophores into ultrabright fluorescent NPs in aqueous environments, for applications such as bioimaging.

CO2-Sourced Polymer Dyes for Dual Information Encryption

Large amounts of small molecule dyes leak into the ecosystems annually in harmful and unsustainable ways. Polymer dyes have attracted much attention because of their high migration resistance, excellent stability, and minimized leakage. However, the complex synthesis process, high cost, and poor degradability hinder their widespread application. Herein, green and sustainable polymer dyes are prepared using natural dye quercetin (Qc) and CO2 through a one-step process. The CO2-sourced polymer dyes show strong migration resistance, high stability, and can be degraded on demand. Additionally, the CO2-sourced polymer dyes showed unique responses to Zn2+, leading to significantly enhanced fluorescence, highlighting their potential for information encryption/decryption. The CO2-sourced polymer dyes can solve the environmental hazards caused by small molecule dye leakage and promote the carbon cycle process. Meanwhile, the one-step synthesis process is expected to achieve sustainable and widespread utilization of CO2-sourced polymer dyes.

A Nanoscale Trans-Platinum(II)-Based Supramolecular Coordination Self-Assembly with a Distinct Anticancer Mechanism

Drug resistance significantly hampers the clinical application of existing platinum-based anticancer drugs. New platinum medications that possess distinct mechanisms of action are highly desired for the treatment of Pt-resistant cancers. Herein, a nanoscale trans-platinum(II)-based supramolecular coordination self-assembly (Pt-TCPP-BA) is prepared via using trans-[PtCl2(pyridine)(NH3)] (transpyroplatin), tetracarboxylporphyrin (TCPP), and benzoic acid (BA) as building blocks to combat drug resistance in platinum-based chemotherapy. Mechanistic studies indicate that Pt-TCPP-BA shows a hydrogen-peroxide-responsive dissociation behavior along with the generation of bioactive trans-Pt(II) and TCPP-Pt species. Different from cisplatin, these degradation products interact with DNA via interstrand cross-links and small groove binding, and induce significant upregulation of cell-death-related proteins such as p53, cleaved caspase 3, p21, and phosphorylated H2A histone family member X in cisplatin-resistant cancer cells. As a result, Pt-TCPP-BA exhibits potent killing effects against Pt-resistant tumors both in vitro and in vivo. Overall, this work not only provides a new platinum drug for combating drug-resistant cancer but also offers a new paradigm for the development of platinum-based supramolecular anticancer drugs.

Supramolecular Coordination Complexes for Synergistic Cancer Therapy

Supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs) are predictable and size-tunable supramolecular self-assemblies constructed through directional coordination bonds between readily available organic ligands and metallic receptors. Based on planar and 3D structures, SCCs can be mainly divided into two categories: metallacycles (e.g., rhomboidal, triangular, rectangular, and hexagonal) and metallacages (e.g., tetrahedral, hexahedral, and dodecahedral). The directional coordination bonds enable the efficient formation of metallacycles and metallacages with well-defined architectures and geometries. SCCs exhibit several advantages, including good directionality, strong interaction force, tunable modularity, and good solution processability, making them highly attractive for biomedical applications, especially in cellular imaging and cancer therapy. Compared with their molecular precursors, SCCs demonstrate enhanced cellular uptake and a strengthened tumor accumulation effect, owing to their inherently charged structures. These properties and the chemotherapeutic potential inherent to organic platinum complexes have promoted their widespread application in antitumor therapy. Furthermore, the defined structures of SCCs, achieved via the design modification of assembly elements and introduction of different functional groups, enable them to combat malignant tumors through multipronged treatment modalities. Because the development of cancer-treatment methodologies integrated in clinics has evolved from single-modality chemotherapy to synergistic multimodal therapy, the development of functional SCCs for synergistic cancer therapy is crucial. While some pioneering reviews have explored the bioapplications of SCCs, often categorized by a specific function or focusing on the specific metal or ligand types, a comprehensive exploration of their synergistic multifunctionality is a critical gap in the current literature.In this Account, we focus on platinum-based SCCs and their applications in cancer therapy. While other metals, such as Pd-, Rh-, Ru-, and Ir-based SCCs, have been explored for cancer therapy by Therrien and Casini et al., platinum-based SCCs have garnered significant interest, owing to their unique advantages in antitumor therapy. These platinum-based SCCs, which enhance antitumor efficacy, are considered prominent candidates for cancer therapies owing to their desirable properties, such as potent antitumor activity, exceptionally low systemic toxicity, active tumor-targeting ability, and enhanced cellular uptake. Furthermore, diverse diagnostic and therapeutic modalities (e.g., chemotherapy, photothermal therapy, and photodynamic therapy) can be integrated into a single platform based on platinum-based SCCs for cancer therapy. Consequently, herein, we summarize our recent research on platinum-based SCCs for synergistic cancer therapy with particular emphasis on the cooperative interplay between different therapeutic methods. In the Conclusions section, we present the key advancements achieved on the basis of our research findings and propose future directions that may significantly impact the field.

Ultrabright Acrylic Polymers with Tunable Fluorescence Enabled by Imprisoning Single TICT Probe

Bright and colorful fluorescent polymers are ideal materials for a variety of applications. Although polymers could be made fluorescent by physical doping or chemical binding of fluorescent units, it is a great challenge to get colorful and highly emissive polymers with a single fluorophore. Here the development of a general and facile method to synthesize ultrabright and colorful polymers using a single twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) probe is reported. By incorporating polymerizable, highly fluorescent, and environmental sensitive TICT probe, a series of colorful acrylic polymers (emission from 481 to 543 nm) with almost 100% fluorescence quantum yields are prepared. Like the solvatochromic effect, functional groups within side chains of acrylic polymers (including alkyl chain, tetrahydrofurfuryl group, and hydroxyl group) provide varied environmental polarity for the incorporated fluorophore, resulting in a series of colorful polymeric materials. Benefiting from the excellent photophysical properties, the polymers show great potential in encryption, cultural relics protection, white light-emitting diode bulb making, and fingerprint identification.

Fluorescence color change of supramolecular polymer networks controlled by crown ether-cation recognition

We report a fluorescent supramolecular polymer networks (SPNs) system based on crown ether-cation recognition. The polymer side chains bear ammonium cations, which can be recognized by host molecules with a B15C5 unit and a quinoline group at each end. The quinoline group makes the host molecule exhibit blue fluorescence. After the formation of SPNs, the recognition of the crown ether-cation transforms the blue fluorescence into yellow fluorescence. The accompanying fluorescence color change during the formation of SPNs makes it with potential applications in the fields of display, printing, information storage, and bioimaging.

Cucurbit[8]uril Confinement-Based Secondary Coassembly for High-Efficiency Phosphorescence Energy Transfer Behavior

Aqueous supramolecular long-lived near-infrared (NIR) material is highly attractive but still remains great challenge. Herein, we report cucurbit[8]uril confinement-based secondary coassembly for achieving NIR phosphorescence energy transfer in water, which is fabricated from dicationic dodecyl-chain-bridged 4-(4-bromophenyl)-pyridine derivative (G), cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]), and polyelectrolyte poly(4-styrene-sulfonic sodium) (PSS) via the hierarchical confinement strategy. As compared to the dumbbell-shaped G, the formation of unprecedented linear polypseudorotaxane G⊂CB[8] with nanofiber morphology engenders an emerging phosphorescent emission at 510 nm due to the macrocyclic confinement effect. Moreover, benefiting from the following secondary assembly confinement, such tight polypseudorotaxane G⊂CB[8] can further assemble with anionic polyelectrolyte PSS to yield uniform spherical nanoparticle, thereby significantly strengthening phosphorescence performance with an extended lifetime (i.e., 2.39 ms, c.f., 45.0 μs). Subsequently, the organic dye Rhodamine 800 serving as energy acceptor can be slightly doped into the polyelectrolyte assembly, which enables the occurrence of efficient phosphorescence energy transfer process with efficiency up to 80.1% at a high donor/acceptor ratio, and concurrently endows the final system with red-shifted and long-lived NIR emission (710 nm). Ultimately, the as-prepared assembly is successfully exploited as versatile imaging agent for NIR window labeling and detecting in living cells.

Self-assembly solid-state enhanced fluorescence emission of GFP chromophore analogues: Formation of microsheets and microtubes oriented by molecular skeleton

The p-, m- and o-N,N-dimethylamino analogs of the green fluorescent protein (GFP) chromophore (denoted as p-DBHI, m-DBHI and o-DBHI) were synthesized by 2,3-cycloaddition. These three compounds were structurally characterized by NMR, HRMS and single crystal X-ray diffraction and were shown to be in the Z-form in both the solid phase and solution. Their fluorescence properties and self-assembly behaviors were investigated by UV-Vis, photoluminescence spectroscopy, fluorescence microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. They exhibited low fluorescence quantum yields in both protic and aprotic solvents, which was consistent with the reported results, and strong emissions in the solid state, thus exhibiting aggregation-induced emission (AIE) behaviors. By a solvent exchange method, the p-DBHI and o-DBHI were assembled into microsheets, while the m-DBHI was assembled into microtubule-like structures. The photoluminescence properties of the assemblies were compared with those of the pristine microcrystalline powders obtained by evaporation from organic solvents. The fluorescence quantum yields of the microcrystals obtained by self-assembly were recorded to 9.86 %, 3.37 % and 31.65 %, respectively, which were much higher than those of the corresponding pristine powders (4.71 %, 2.51 % and 17.03 %). This indicated that the fluorescence properties in the solid state depended on the morphologies of the particles.

Cucurbituril-based supramolecular host-guest complexes: single-crystal structures and dual-state fluorescence enhancement

Two supramolecular complexes were prepared using cucurbiturils [CBs] as mediators and a four-armed p-xylene derivative (M1) as a guest molecule. The single crystals of these two complexes were obtained and successfully analyzed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD). An unexpected and intriguing 1 : 2 self-assembly arrangement between M1 and CB[8] was notably uncovered, marking its first observation. These host-guest complexes exhibit distinctive photophysical properties, especially emission behaviors. Invaluable insights can be derived from these single-crystal structures. The precious single-crystal structures provide both precise structural information regarding the supramolecular complexes and a deeper understanding of the intricate mechanisms governing their photophysical properties.

Simultaneous detection and removal of mercury (II) using multifunctional fluorescent materials

Environmental problems caused by mercury ions are increasing due to growing industrialization, poor enforcement, and inefficient pollutant treatment. Therefore, detecting and removing mercury from the ecological chain is of utmost significance. Currently, a wide range of small molecules and nanomaterials have made remarkable progress in the detection, detoxification, adsorption, and removal of mercury. In this review, we summarized the recent advances in the design and construction of multifunctional materials, detailed their sensing and removing mechanisms, and discussed with emphasis the advantages and disadvantages of different types of sensors. Finally, we elucidated the problems and challenges of current multifunctional materials and further pointed out the direction for the future development of related materials. This review is expected to provide a guideline for researchers to establish a robust strategy for the detection and removal of mercury ionsin the environment.

Sensitive Detection of Trace Explosives by a Self-Assembled Monolayer Sensor

Fluorescence probe technology holds great promise in the application of trace explosive detection due to its high sensitivity, fast response speed, good selectivity, and low cost. In this work, a designed approach has been employed to prepare the TPE-PA-8 molecule, utilizing the classic aggregation-induced emission (AIE) property of 1,1,2,2-tetraphenylethene (TPE), for the development of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) targeting the detection of trace nitroaromatic compound (NAC) explosives. The phosphoric acid acts as an anchoring unit, connecting to TPE through an alkyl chain of eight molecules, which has been found to play a crucial role in promoting the aggregation of TPE luminogens, leading to the enhanced light-emission property and sensing performance of SAMs. The SAMs assembled on Al2O3-deposited fiber film exhibit remarkable detection performances, with detection limits of 0.68 ppm, 1.68 ppm, and 2.5 ppm for trinitrotoluene, dinitrotoluene, and nitrobenzene, respectively. This work provides a candidate for the design and fabrication of flexible sensors possessing the high-performance and user-friendly detection of trace NACs.

Highly stretchable and self-healing photoswitchable supramolecular fluorescent polymers for underwater anti-counterfeiting

Thanks to the non-destructiveness and spatial-controllability of light, photoswitchable fluorescent polymers (PFPs) have been successfully applied in advanced anti-counterfeiting and information encryption. However, most of them are not suitable for use in harsh underwater environments, including high salinity seawater. In this study, by integrating photochromic molecules into a hydrophobic polymer matrix with the fluorine elastomer, including dipole-dipole interactions, we describe a class of novel photoswitchable supramolecular fluorescent polymers (PSFPs) that can adaptively change their fluorescence between none, green and red by the irradiation of different light. The PSFPs not only exhibited excellent photoswitchable properties, including fast photo-responsibility, prominent photo-reversibility, and photostability, but also exhibited some desired properties, including exceptional stretchability, hydrophobicity, antifouling, self-healing ability, simple preparation process, and processability. We thus demonstrated their applications in underwater data encryption and anti-counterfeiting labels.

Photo-Controlled Nano-Supramolecular Size and Reversible Luminescent Behaviors Based on Cucurbit[7]uril Cascaded Assembly

Supramolecular luminescent material with switchable behavior and photo-induced aggregation with emission enhancement is a current research hot spot. Herein, a size-tunable nano-supramolecular assembly with reversible photoluminescent behavior was constructed by noncovalent polymerization of diarylethene-bridged bis(coumarin) derivative (DAE-CO), cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7]), and β-cyclodextrin-grafted hyaluronic acid (HACD). Benefiting from the macrocyclic confinement effect, the guest molecule DAE-CO was included into the cavity of CB[7] to give enhanced fluorescence emission of the resulting DAE-CO⊂CB[7]2 with longer lifetime at 432 nm to 1.43 ns, thereby further enhancing fluorescence output and lifetime (1.46 ns) when further assembled with HACD, compared with the free DAE-CO (0.95 ns). In addition, DAE-CO, DAE-CO⊂CB[7]2, and DAE-CO⊂CB[7]2&HACD all possessed characteristics of aggregation-induced emission and reversible photo-switched structural interconversion, exhibiting an obvious photophysical activation phenomenon of self-aggregation into larger nanoparticles with increase in fluorescence emission intensity, lifetime, and size after irradiation, which could be increased step by step with the alternating irradiation of 254 nm (5 min) or >600 nm (30 s) repeated 7 times. These supramolecular assemblies were successfully used in the tumor cells' targeted imaging and anti-counterfeiting because of the capability of HACD for recognizing specific receptors overexpressed on the surface of tumor cells and the excellent photo-regulated switch ability of DAE-CO, providing an approach of constructing photo-induced emission-enhanced luminescent materials.

Efficient manipulation of Förster resonance energy transfer through host-guest interaction enables tunable white-light emission and devices in heterotopic bisnanohoops

In this study, we synthesized and reported the heterotopic bisnanohoops P5-[8,10]CPPs containing cycloparaphenylenes (CPPs) and a pillar[5]arene unit, which act not only as energy donors but also as a host for binding energy acceptors. We demonstrated that a series of elegant FRET systems could be constructed successfully through self-assembly between donors P5-[8,10]CPPs and acceptors with different emissions via host-guest interaction. These FRET systems further allow us to finely adjust the donors P5-[8,10]CPPs and acceptors (BODIPY-Br and Rh-Br) for achieving multiple color-tunable emissions, particularly white-light emission. More importantly, these host-guest complexes were successfully utilized in the fabrication of white-light fluorescent films and further integrated with a 365 nm LED lamp to create white LED devices. The findings highlight a new application of carbon nanorings in white-light emission materials, beyond the common recognition of π-conjugated molecules.

Polysiloxane-Based Molecular Logic Gate for Dual-Channel Visualizing Mitochondrial pH and Sulphite Changes during Cuproptosis

Intracellular Cu-induced regulated cell death, characterized by the aggregation of lipidizing mitochondrial enzymes, is called cuproptosis. Mitochondria play a vital role in the metabolic regulation of cell injury and stressful immune responses. The pH levels and sulfur dioxide (SO2) content in mitochondria have important indicative roles in the regulation of cuproptosis. However, fluorescent probes that simultaneously detect changes in pH and SO2 in mitochondria during cuprotosis have not been reported. To fill this blank, in this study, we dexterously used functional polysiloxane as a fluorescent platform to propose a molecular logic gate probe P0-pH-SO2 for detecting changes in intramitochondrial pH and SO2 content through a dual-channel mode. In addition, we defined a new function to reflect the cellular state of the elesclomol-induced cuproptosis process based on the input and output of the relevant logic relationship. This new fluorescent molecular logic gate probe P0-pH-SO2 can be rapidly activated by mitochondrial sulfites to induce green fluorescence, while the red fluorescence is quenched with the proton in the mitochondria. Overall, this study developed a novel logic-gated molecular probe that provided a versatile strategy for monitoring the role played by intramitochondrial sulfites and H+ in cuproptosis. This work will open the way to broaden the applications of molecular logic gates and fluorescent polysiloxanes.

Exploring the supramolecular chemistry of cyclopropeniums: halogen-bonding-induced electrostatic assembly of polymers

Exploring new noncovalent synthons for supramolecular assembly is essential for material innovation. Accordingly, we herein report a unique type of cyclopropenium-based supramolecular motif and demonstrate its applications to polymer self-assembly. Because of the "ion pair strain" effect, trisaminocyclopropenium iodides complex strongly with fluoroiodobenzene derivatives, forming stable adducts. Crystal structure analysis reveals that halogen-bonding between the iodide anion and the iodo substituent of the fluoroiodobenzene is the driving force for the formation of these electrostatically complexed adducts. Such halogen-bonding-induced electrostatic interactions were further successfully applied to drive the assembly of polymers in solution, on surfaces, and in bulk, demonstrating their potential for constructing supramolecular polymeric materials.

Sericin from Fibroin-Deficient Silkworms Served as a Promising Resource for Biomedicine

Sericin, a fascinating natural biomaterial derived from silkworms, has received increasing interest in recent years for its unique bioactivity and high compatibility. Silkworms can be divided into wild-type or silk fibroin-deficient mutants according to whether they synthesize and secrete silk fibroin. Silk fibroin-deficient mutant silkworms and their cocoons are convenient for us to obtain diverse and high-quality sericin, which has been applicated in various fields such as cell culture, tissue engineering, drug delivery, and cosmetics. Here, we present an overview of our silkworm varieties resources, especially silk fibroin-deficient mutant silkworms. We optimized various extraction methods of sericin and summarized the characteristics and advantages of sericin. Finally, we developed and discussed a series of sericin-based biomaterials for promising applications for a diverse set of needs.

Enhanced Host-Guest Association and Fluorescence in Copolymers from Copper Salphen Complexes by Supramolecular Internalization of Anions

We describe the synthesis, crystallographic characterization of a new Cu-Salphen compound and its use as a host Lewis-acid against guest anions in two versions: a) free molecule, b) copolymerized with methyl methacrylate:n-butyl acrylate (1 : 4-wt.) as protective co-monomers. Higher contents in Cu-Salphen yielded larger and more homogeneous polymer sizes. Polymer size together with glass transitions, heat capacity, thermal degradation, guest-saturation degrees and host-guest species distribution profiles from spectrophotometric titrations explained growths of up to 630-fold in K₁₁ and 180000-fold in K₁₂ for the host's binding site attributable to a solvophobic protection from the macromolecular structure. Spectrofluorimetry revealed blue-shifted×13-16 larger luminescence for Cu-Salphen in the polymers (λ_em =488-498 nm) than that of the non-polymerized counterpart (λ_em =510-543 nm) and "turn-on" blue-shifted enhanced fluorescence upon guest association. We propose a cooperative incorporation of the guests occurring from the outer medium toward internally protected binding site pockets in the random coil polymer conformations.

Ionic crosslinking of alginate/carboxymethyl chitosan fluorescent hydrogel for bacterial detection and sterilization

Herein, a polysaccharide-based fluorescent hydrogel with multi-responsiveness simply implemented by concurrent effects of ionic crosslinking/rehydration processes is presented. Specifically, the alginate and carboxymethyl chitosan are chosen to prepare the interpenetrating polymer matrix while a pair of metal cations has been selectively sequentially integrated to alter hydrogel mechanical and fluorescent properties. Experimental results indicate the hydrogels show tunable fluorescent emission in response to multiple cations and pH conditions, and display a reversible "ON/OFF" fluorescent response to Mⁿ⁺/ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid. Moreover, this synergistic ionic crosslinking strategy is proved to be highly effective in preparing multifunctional metallohydrogels possessing robust/anisotropic mechanical properties, typical shape memory and cation/pH-responsive fluorescence performance, and a proof-of-application for bacterial detection and sterilization has also been demonstrated. Therefore, we believe this study would provide new insights into multifunctional luminescent hydrogels for advanced biomedical systems.

Mechanical tough and multicolor aggregation-induced emissive polymeric hydrogels for fluorescent patterning

Aggregation-induced emissive fluorogens (AIEgens) are promising building blocks for fluorescent polymeric hydrogels (FPHs) because intense fluorescence intensities are usually guaranteed by spontaneous aggregates of hydrophobic AIEgens in a hydrophilic polymer network. However, most AIE-active FPHs are single-color fluorescent and cannot display tunable emission colors. Additionally, efforts to produce mechanically strong AIE-active hydrogels have been largely ignored, restricting their potential uses. Herein, we present the synthesis of an AIE-active methyl picolinate-substituted 1,8-naphthalimide monomer (MP-NI) for fabricating mechanical tough and multicolor FPHs. Owing to the introduction of bulky and coordinative methyl picolinate group, these specially designed MP-NI molecules were forced to adopt propeller-shaped conformation that renders them with intense aggregation-induced blue emission. Moreover, the MP-NI moieties grafted in a hydrogel matrix can sensitize red and green fluorescence of Eu³⁺and Tb³⁺ via antenna effect. Consequently, multicolor fluorescent hydrogels that sustain a high stress of 1 MPa were obtained by chemically introducing MP-NI moieties into dually cross-linked alginate polymer networks with high-density metal (Ca²⁺/Tb³⁺/Eu³⁺) coordination and hydrogen bonding crosslinks. Their capacity to enable the writing of arbitrary multicolor fluorescent patterns using Eu³⁺/Tb³⁺ as inks were finally demonstrated, suggesting their potential uses for smart display and information encryption.

Covalently bridged pillararene-based polymers: structures, synthesis, and applications

Covalently bridged pillararene-based polymers (CBPPs) are a special class of macrocycle-based polymers in which multiple pillararene monomers are attached to the polymer structures by covalent bonds. Owing to the unique molecular structures including the connection components or the spatial structures, CBPPs have become increasingly popular in applications ranging from environmental science to biomedical science. In this review, CBPPs are divided into three types (linear polymers, grafted polymers, and cross-linked polymers) according to their structural characteristics and described from the perspective of synthesis methods comprehensively. In addition, the applications of CBPPs are presented, including selective adsorption and separation, fluorescence sensing and detection, construction of supramolecular gels, anticancer drug delivery, artificial light-harvesting, catalysis, and others. Finally, the current challenging issues and comprehensive prospects of CBPPs are discussed.

Solid-State Luminescent Materials with Multiple Emission Colors and Near-Unity Quantum Yield

Developing solid luminescent materials with a unity quantum yield and tunable emission color is promising, although it is still a difficult task. A straightforward heat-treatment method has been developed to load 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA) into the matrix of boric acid (BA) to produce powders with a near-unity quantum yield and tunable emission color from yellow to green. Our results suggest that the emission of the powders originates from PTCDA, and the tunability of the emission color is caused by the hydrolysis of PTCDA in the alkaline environment. The near-unity quantum yield is attributed to the BA matrix, which confines PTCDA. In addition, the powder also shows excellent thermal stability that allows its application in light-emitting diodes. The above results are important for the development of solid-state luminescent materials for various applications, and also provide a clue for studying the emission properties of luminescent materials.

An Antitumor Dual-Responsive Host-Guest Supramolecular Polymer Based on Hypoxia-Cleavable Azocalix[4]arene

The exploitation of specific guests which can respond to external stimuli is the main approach for the construction of stimuli-responsive supramolecular polymers (SPs) based on host-guest interactions. Most functional guests, however, fail to manifest stimuli-responses. Herein, a hypoxia-responsive dimeric azocalixarene (D-SAC4A) with outstanding hosting properties was used as the macrocyclic building block for the preparation of host stimuli-responsive SPs. Since azocalixarenes can also be compatible with stimuli-responsive guests, an antitumor drug, camptothecin (CPT), was chosen and linked via a disulfide-containing linker to afford a glutathione (GSH)-responsive ditropic guest (D-CPT). A unique dual-responsive SP was obtained by 1 : 1 mixing of D-SAC4A and D-CPT in water, which further assembled into SP nanoparticles (DSPNs). DSPNs displayed outstanding stability against dilution and biological interferants, as well as precise CPT-release under GSH and hypoxia conditions. In vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrated the good biosafety and tumor-suppressive effects of DSPNs.

Coronene guest molecule selectivity in host templates formed by hydrogen bonding and van der Waals forces at liquid/solid interfaces

COR guest molecules are selectively adsorbed in the hexagonal cavities in both H6PDB and H6PAB self-assembled systems and preferentially adsorbed in the H6PAB host template in the H6PAB/HPB system.

Dynamic Timing Control of Molecular Photoluminescent Systems

Dynamic control of molecular photoluminescence offers chemical solutions to designing functional emissive materials. Although stimuli-switchable molecular luminescent systems are well established, how to encode these dynamic emissive systems with a "timing" feature, that is, time-dependent luminescent properties, remains challenging. This Concept aims to summarize the design principles of dynamic timing molecular photoluminescent systems by discussing the state-of-the-art of this topic and the shaping of fabrication strategies at both the molecular and supramolecular levels. An outlook and perspectives are given to outline the future opportunities and challenges in the rational design and potential applications of these smart emissive systems.

Supramolecular Polymer Gel Lubricant with Excellent Mechanical Stability and Tribological Performances

Lubricants performing better in machinery systems would lead to the remarkable reduction of environmental pollution problems and the significant improvement of fuel economy. A new family of supramolecular polymer gel lubricants with urea groups has been successfully prepared via self-assembling noncovalent bonds. These newly designed supramolecular polymer gels were well characterized with field-emission scanning electron microscopy, proton nuclear magnetic resonance, attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, a rheometer, oscillating reciprocating friction, and a wear tester. Compared to low molecular weight supramolecular gels, the covalent and noncovalent bonds cooperated in the supramolecular polymer gel based on macromolecules. Hence, the mechanical properties and viscoelasticity of gel lubricants are greater than those of the low molecular weight supramolecular gels. Furthermore, owing to the longer chain length of polymer gelators, the thickness of the adsorbed film formed on the surface lubricated by macromolecules is thicker than that on the surface lubricated by low molecular weight supramolecular gels, which positively correlates with the lubricating property, making supramolecular polymer gels based on macromolecules better than low molecular weight supramolecular gels. Excitingly, the supramolecular polymer gels based on macromolecules exhibit more excellent thermal reversibility, creep recovery, and thixotropic properties, which not only achieve the lubricating property but also lead to the remarkable reduction of environmental pollution problems due to oil creeping.

Amphiphilicity-Controlled Polychromatic Emissive Supramolecular Self-Assemblies for Highly Sensitive and Efficient Artificial Light-Harvesting Systems

Dynamic sequential control of photoluminescence by supramolecular approaches has become a great issue in supramolecular chemistry. However, developing a systematic strategy to construct polychromatic photoluminescent supramolecular self-assemblies for improving the efficiency and sensitivity of artificial light-harvesting systems still remains a challenge. Here, a series of amphiphilicity-controlled supramolecular self-assemblies with polychromatic fluorescence based on lower-rim hexyl-modified sulfonatocalix[4]arene (SC4A6) and N-alkyl-modified p-phenylene divinylpyridiniums (PVPn, n = 2-7) as efficient light-harvesting platforms is reported. PVPn shows wide ranges of polychromatic fluorescence by co-assembling with SC4A6, whose emission trends significantly depend on the modified alkyl-chains of PVPn. The formed PVPn-SC4A6 co-assemblies as light-harvesting platforms are extremely sensitive for transferring the energy to two near-infrared emissive acceptors, Nile blue (NiB) and Rhodamine 800. After optimizing the amphiphilicity of PVPn-SC4A6 systems, the PVPn-SC4A6-NiB light-harvesting systems achieve an ultrasensitive working concentration for NiB (2 nm) and an ultrahigh antenna effect up to 91.0. Furthermore, the two different kinds of light-harvesting nanoparticles exhibit good performance on near-infrared imaging in the Golgi apparatus and mitochondria, respectively.

Stimuli-Responsive Aggregation-Induced Emission (AIE)-Active Polymers for Biomedical Applications

At high concentration or in the aggregated state, most of the traditional luminophores suffer from the general aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) effect, which significantly limits their biomedical applications. On the contrary, a few fluorophores exhibit an aggregation-induced emission (AIE) feature which is just the opposite of ACQ. The luminophores with aggregation-induced emission (AIEgens) have exhibited noteworthy advantages to get tunable emission, excellent photostability, and biocompatibility. Incorporating AIEgens into polymer design has yielded diversified polymer systems with fascinating photophysical characteristics. Again, stimuli-responsive polymers are capable of undergoing chemical and/or physical property changes on receiving signals from single or multiple stimuli. The combination of the AIE property and stimuli responses in a single polymer platform provides a feasible and effective strategy for the development of smart polymers with promising biomedical applications. Herein, the advancements in stimuli-responsive polymers with AIE characteristics for biomedical applications are summarized. AIE-active polymers are first categorized into conventional π-π conjugated and nonconventional fluorophore systems and then subdivided based on various stimuli, such as pH, redox, enzyme, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and temperature. In each section, the design strategies of the smart polymers and their biomedical applications, including bioimaging, cancer theranostics, gene delivery, and antimicrobial examples, are introduced. The current challenges and future perspectives of this field are also stated at the end of this review article.

Recent Advances in Enhancement Techniques for Blood Fingerprints

The blood fingerprint enhancement is not so eye-catching as latent fingerprint development in forensic community, but it is indeed an important piece of evidence for personal identification, forensic analysis and even reconstruction of crime scenes. In over past ten years, novel reagents, advanced materials and emerging techniques have growingly participated in blood fingerprint enhancement, which not only leads to a higher level of developing sensitivity, selectivity and contrast, but also endows blood impressions with more forensic significance. This review summarizes recent advances in conventional chemical reagents targeting at heme, protein and amino acid as well as emerging enhancement techniques based on advanced materials, new equipment or methods. Some critical issues in forensic science are also discussed, including partial blood fingerprint enhancement, false positive of developing reagents, the compatibility of blood enhancement technique and DNA, fingerprint age determination, and so on. Finally, we have proposed several urgent problems to be solved and the prospects of some promising techniques were proposed in the field of blood fingerprint enhancement in future work.

Multicolor-Luminescence Including White Light by Photomodulation of Supramolecular Assemblies in Aqueous Media

Photo-responsive supramolecular systems offer intriguing functional aspects which have led to their applications in diverse fields such as optoelectronics and biomedicine. However, the modulation of the luminescence output in a spatiotemporal fashion by photo-controlled transformation still remains a challenging task. Herein, we report the controlled regulation of the emission color of supramolecular assemblies of amphiphilic cyanostilbenes (CSs) in water through in situ photomodulation employing UV and sunlight. Due to their aggregation-induced emission (AIE) features, the CS chromophores in the supramolecular assemblies exhibited bright greenish-yellow emission. Photoirradiation predominantly led to the formation of a cyclized product exhibiting aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) features and having efficient cyan-blue emission in water but severely quenched emission in the solid state. Hence, starting from a unicomponent scaffold, photomodulation provided tunable emission ranging from greenish-yellow to cyan-blue including white light in water. Furthermore, using the contrasting AIE and ACQ behavior of the components in the photoirradiated mixtures, we were able to design rewritable fluorescent inks and encryption in solid films indicating the practical utility of these systems.

Underwater luminescent labeling materials constructed from a supramolecular approach

Underwater labeling under complicated conditions is challenging for modern adhesive materials. In this work, a series of supramolecular polymer adhesives were successfully prepared via the non-covalent copolymerization of low-molecular-weight monomers (thioctic acid (TA) and tetraphenylethene derivatives (TPEs)). Strong adhesion effects were observed under various conditions. The poly(TA-TPE)s showed long-term stability in underwater labeling. Due to the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) behavior of TPEs, poly(TA-TPE)s showed great potential as fluorescent labeling materials in water. Complicated and cryptographic information can be stored in labeling structures, and analyzed under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. Supramolecular labeling showed excellent distinguishability in complex backgrounds. Meanwhile, fluorescent adhesives exhibited a number of advantages over visible colored labels.

Metal-ligand Interactions and Oligo(p-Phenylene Vinylene) Derivatives Based Supramolecular Polymer Possessing Variable Fluorescence Colors

Fluorescent supramolecular polymers combine the benefits of supramolecular polymers in terms of dynamic nature with the optoelectronic features of incorporated fluorophores. However, the majority of fluorescent supramolecular polymers can only exhibit a single fluorescent state, restricting their applications. Incorporating J-type dyes into supramolecular monomers is expected to impart supramolecular polymers with variable fluorescence colors, because the aggregation mode of J-type dyes is closely related to the formation of supramolecular polymers. Herein, we report a supramolecular polymer [M1·Zn(OTf)₂ ]_n , in which the monomer M1 contains a J-type dye, oligo(p-phenylene vinylene) (OPV) derivative, and two terpyridine ends. The M1 + Zn(OTf)₂ solutions exhibit fluorescence color changes varying from cyan to yellow-green in the monomer concentration ranging from 0.04 to 1.00 mM. Moreover, based on the outputs from laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM), the fluorescence color transition during the formation of supramolecular polymers is intuitively proven. Additionally, considering the close relationship between the supramolecular polymer structure and the fluorescence color, the fluorescence color can be regulated by introducing tetraethylammonium hydroxide (TBAOH) that can bind with Zn²⁺ competitively to break up the structure of the supramolecular polymer. Simultaneously Improving the Optical, Dielectric, and Solubility Properties of Fluorene-Based Polyimide with Silyl Ether Side Groups

Three fluorene-based polyimides with silyl ether groups (Si-PIs) were successfully synthesized by a simple and efficient silicon etherification reaction of hydroxyl-containing polyimides (OH-PIs) and tert-butylchlorodiphenylsilane (TBDPSCl), and their structures were confirmed by ¹H NMR and IR spectra. The bulky nonpolar tert-butyldiphenylsilyl (TBDPS) side groups in the modified PI unit instead of the strong electron donor -OH group is conducive to decreasing electronic conjugation and charge transfer (CT) interaction along the PI chain. Accordingly, the optical, dielectric, and solubility properties of the modified Si-PI films are simultaneously improved compared with the precursor OH-PI films. The modified Si-PI films demonstrate a meaningful enhancement in the transmittances at a wavelength of 400 nm (T ₄₀₀ ) to 74-81% from 42 to 55% of OH-PI films and the regeneration of fluorescence characteristics. The dielectric constant and loss of Si-PI films are also obviously reduced to 2.63-2.75 and 0.0024-0.0091 at 1 kHz from 4.19 to 4.78 and 0.0173-0.0295 of OH-PI films, respectively, due to substituted with the bulky nonpolar TBDPS groups to increase the free volume and hydrophobicity of Si-PI films. The solubility of Si-PIs in low- or nonpolar solvents (such as CHCl₃, CH₂Cl₂, acetone, and toluene) is significantly improved. Furthermore, Si-PI films still maintain relatively good thermal properties with the 5% weight loss temperature (T _5% ) in the range 470-491 °C under a nitrogen atmosphere and the glass transition temperature (T _g ) in the range 245-308 °C.

A resonance Rayleigh scattering method for sensitive detection of chitosan based on supramolecular complex and mechanism study

A convenient and sensitive resonance Rayleigh scattering (RRS) method for the detection of chitosan (CTS) has been developed via forming Cu-Zn supramolecular complex by complexation reaction, hydrophobic force and electrostatic attraction. The microstructure of the complex was characterized by FT-IR, zeta potential, scanning electron microscope (SEM), UV-vis and RRS. Furthermore, the interaction mechanism among Cu(II), Zn(II), CTS and sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) was studied. The results revealed that CTS and Cu(II) or Zn(II) formed a supramolecular complex with RRS enhancement in weak acid condition. In the presence of SDBS, the RRS intensity of CTS-Cu(II)-SDBS or CTS-Zn(II)-SDBS was significantly higher than that of the binary system without SDBS at the same CTS concentration. The RRS intensity of CTS-Cu(II)-Zn(II)-SDBS was higher than that of CTS-Cu(II)-SDBS and CTS-Zn(II)-SDBS. The RRS intensity increased linearly with the increase of CTS concentration made it possible to determine CTS quantitatively. In the range extending from 0.10 to 5.00 μg/mL, the equation of linear regression was ΔI=1848.8c-138.3 with a correlation coefficient 0.9996, and the detection limit was estimated to be 37.96 ng/mL. The study was successfully applied for the determination of CTS in health food samples, suggesting its great potential toward CTS analysis.

Macrocycle-Based Solid-State Supramolecular Polymers

Supramolecular polymers, generated by connecting monomers through noncovalent interactions, have received considerable attention over the past years, as they provide versatile platforms for developing diverse aesthetically pleasing polymeric structures with promising applications in a variety of fields, such as medicine, catalysis, and sensing. In the development of supramolecular polymers, macrocyclic hosts play a very important role. Benefiting from their abundant host-guest chemistry and self-assembly characteristics, macrocycles themselves or their host-guest complexes can self-assemble to form well-ordered supramolecular polymeric architectures including pseudopolyrotaxanes and polyrotaxanes. The integration of these topological structures into supramolecular polymeric materials also imbues them with some unforeseen functions. Current interest in macrocycle-based supramolecular polymers is mostly focused on the development of supramolecular soft materials in solution or gel-state, in which the dynamic nature of noncovalent interactions endows supramolecular polymers with a wealth of "smart" properties, such as multiresponsiveness and self-repair capabilities. While preparation of macrocycle-derived supramolecular polymers in the solid state is a relatively challenging but intriguing prospect, they are an important part of the field of supramolecular polymers. On one hand, the construction of macrocycle-based solid-state supramolecular polymers enables us to obtain new materials with novel properties and functions such as mechano-responsiveness. On the other hand, the molecular structures and arrangements in these materials are well-identified by X-ray crystallography techniques, offering a direct visual representation of the supramolecular polymerization process. The analysis of the role of noncovalent interactions in these architectures allows us to design more sophisticated and elegant supramolecular polymers in a highly rationalized and controllable manner. This Account serves to summarize the research progress on macrocycle-based solid-state supramolecular polymers (MSSPs), including the contributions toward this field made by our group. For constructing MSSPs, the key point is to control noncovalent interactions. Thus, in this Account, we primarily classify these MSSPs by different noncovalent interactions involved to connect the monomers, including metal-ligand interactions, host-guest interactions, π···π stacking, and halogen bonding. These noncovalent interactions are highly associated with the structures and functions of the resultant MSSPs. For instance, using metal-ligand interactions as driving forces, metal clusters can be introduced in MSSPs which afford systems with solid-state luminescence or proton conduction properties; supramolecular polymerization using macrocycle-based host-guest interactions can modulate the molecular arrangement of some specific molecules in the solid state, which further influences their solid-state properties; π···π stacking interactions and halogen bonding give chemists more choice to design MSSPs with various elements. The role of macrocyclic hosts in MSSPs is also revealed in these descriptions. Finally, the remaining challenges are identified for further development of future prospects. We hope that this Account can inspire new discoveries in the realm of supramolecular functional systems and offer new opportunities for the construction of supramolecular architectures and solid-state materials.
