Multiple Mechanical Gradients are Responsible for the Strong Adhesion of Spider Attachment Hair

Dual-beam X-ray nano-holotomography

Nanotomography with hard X-rays is a widely used technique for high-resolution imaging, providing insights into the structure and composition of various materials. In recent years, tomographic approaches based on simultaneous illuminations of the same sample region from different angles by multiple beams have been developed at micrometre image resolution. Transferring these techniques to the nanoscale is challenging due to the loss in photon flux by focusing the X-ray beam. We present an approach for multi-beam nanotomography using a dual-beam Fresnel zone plate (dFZP) in a near-field holography setup. The dFZP generates two nano-focused beams that overlap in the sample plane, enabling the simultaneous acquisition of two projections from slightly different angles. This first proof-of-principle implementation of the dual-beam setup allows for the efficient removal of ring artifacts and noise using machine-learning approaches. The results open new possibilities for full-field multi-beam nanotomography and pave the way for future advancements in fast holotomography and artifact-reduction techniques.

Bioinspired Microadhesives with Greatly Enhanced Reversible Adhesion Fabricated by Synthesized Silicone Elastomer with Increasing Phenyl Contents

We present a facile chemical method for fabricating bioinspired microadhesives with significant improved reversible adhesion strength. Four kinds of polysiloxane with gradient varying phenyl contents were synthesized and used to fabricate microadhesives. The chemical structures and mechanical properties, as well as surface properties of the four microadhesives, were confirmed and characterized by ATR-FTIR, DSC, XPS, low-field NMR, tensile tests, and SEM, respectively. The macroadhesion test results revealed that phenyl contents showed remarkable and positive impacts on the macroadhesion performance of microadhesives. The pull-off adhesion strength of microadhesives with 90% phenyl content (0.851 N/cm2) was nearly 300% higher than that of pure PDMS (0.309 N/cm2). The macroadhesion mechanism analysis demonstrates that a larger bulk energy dissipation caused by massive π-π interaction, as well as the hydrophobic interaction and van der Waals forces at the interface synergistically resulted in a significant enhancement of the adhesion performance. Our results demonstrate the remarkable impact of chemical structures on the adhesion of microadhesives, and it is conducive to the further improvement of adhesion properties of bioinspired microadhesives.

Selectively Tuning the Substrate Adhesion Strength of Aligned Carbon Nanotube Arrays via Thermal Postgrowth Processing

The excellent intrinsic properties of aligned nanofibers, such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and their ability to be easily formed into multifunctional 3D architectures motivate their use for a variety of commercial applications, such as batteries, chemical sensors for environmental monitoring, and energy harvesting devices. While controlling nanofiber adhesion to the growth substrate is essential for bulk-scale manufacturing and device performance, experimental approaches and models to date have not addressed tuning the CNT array-substrate adhesion strength with thermal processing conditions. In this work, facile "one-pot" thermal postgrowth processing (at temperatures T_p = 700-950 °C) is used to study CNT-substrate pull-off strength for millimeter-tall aligned CNT arrays. CNT array pull-off from the flat growth substrate (Fe/Al₂O₃/SiO₂/Si wafers) via tensile testing shows that the array fails progressively, similar to the response of brittle microfiber bundles in tension. The pull-off strength evolves nonmonotonically with T_p in three regimes, first increasing by 10 times through T_p = 800 °C due to graphitization of disordered carbon at the CNT-catalyst interface, and then decreasing back to a weak interface through T_p = 950 °C due to diffusion of the Fe catalyst into the substrate, Al₂O₃ crystallization, and substrate cracking. Failure is observed to occur at the CNT-catalyst interface below 750 °C, and the CNTs themselves break during pull-off after higher T_p processing, leaving residual CNTs on the substrate. Morphological and chemical analyses indicate that the Fe catalyst remains on the substrate after pull-off in all regimes. This work provides new insights into the interfacial interactions responsible for nanofiber-substrate adhesion and allows tuning to increase or decrease array strength for applications such as advanced sensors, energy devices, and nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS).

Hard X-ray full-field nanoimaging using a direct photon-counting detector

Full-field X-ray nanoimaging is a widely used tool in a broad range of scientific areas. In particular, for low-absorbing biological or medical samples, phase contrast methods have to be considered. Three well established phase contrast methods at the nanoscale are transmission X-ray microscopy with Zernike phase contrast, near-field holography and near-field ptychography. The high spatial resolution, however, often comes with the drawback of a lower signal-to-noise ratio and significantly longer scan times, compared with microimaging. In order to tackle these challenges a single-photon-counting detector has been implemented at the nanoimaging endstation of the beamline P05 at PETRA III (DESY, Hamburg) operated by Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon. Thanks to the long sample-to-detector distance available, spatial resolutions of below 100 nm were reached in all three presented nanoimaging techniques. This work shows that a single-photon-counting detector in combination with a long sample-to-detector distance allows one to increase the time resolution for in situ nanoimaging, while keeping a high signal-to-noise level.

Core-shell dry adhesives for rough surfaces via electrically responsive self-growing strategy

Bioinspired dry adhesives have an extraordinary impact in the field of robotic manipulation and locomotion. However, there is a considerable difference between artificial structures and biological ones regarding surface adaptability, especially for rough surfaces. This can be attributed to their distinct structural configuration and forming mechanism. Here, we propose a core-shell adhesive structure that is obtained through a growth strategy, i.e., an electrically responsive self-growing core-shell structure. This growth strategy results in a specific mushroom-shaped structure with a rigid core and a soft shell, which exhibits excellent adhesion on typical target surfaces with roughness ranging from the nanoscale to the microscale up to dozens of micrometers. The proposed adhesion strategy extends dry adhesives from smooth surfaces to rough ones, especially for rough surfaces with roughness up to dozens or hundreds of micrometers, opening an avenue for the development of dry adhesive-based devices and systems.

Scanning x-ray microdiffraction: In situ molecular imaging of tissue and materials

Scanning x-ray microdiffraction of complex tissues and materials is an emerging method for the study of macromolecular structures in situ, providing information on the way molecular constituents are arranged and interact with their microenvironment. Acting as a bridge between high-resolution images of individual constituents and lower resolution microscopies that generate global views of material, scanning microdiffraction provides an approach to study the functioning of complex tissues across multiple length scales. Here, we discuss the methodology, summarize results from recent studies, and discuss the potential of the technique for future studies coordinated with other biophysical techniques.

An insect-scale robot reveals the effects of different body dynamics regimes during open-loop running in feature-laden terrain

The transition from the lab to natural environments is an archetypal challenge in robotics. While larger robots can manage complex limb-ground interactions using sensing and control, such strategies are difficult to implement on small platforms where space and power are limited. The Harvard Ambulatory Microrobot (HAMR) is an insect-scale quadruped capable of effective open-loop running on featureless, hard substrates. Inspired by the predominantly feedforward strategy of rapidly-running cockroaches on uneven terrain (Sponberg, 2007), we used HAMR to explore open-loop running on two 3D printed heterogeneous terrains generated using fractional Brownian motion. The 'pocked' terrain had foot-scale features throughout while the 'jagged' terrain features increased in height in the direction of travel. We measured the performance of trot and pronk gaits while varying limb amplitude and stride frequency. The frequencies tested encompassed different dynamics regimes: body resonance (10-25 Hz) and kinematic running (30-40 Hz), with dynamics typical of biological running and walking, respectively, and limb-transmission resonance (45-60 Hz). On the featureless and pocked terrains, low mechanical cost-of-transport (mCoT) kinematic running combinations performed best without systematic differences between trot and pronk; indicating that if terrain features are not too tall, a robot can transition from homo-to heterogeneous environments in open-loop. Pronk bypassed taller features than trot on the jagged terrain, and higher mCoT, lower frequency running was more often effective. While increasing input power to the robot improved performance in general, lower frequency pronking on jagged terrain allowed the robot to bypass taller features compared with the same input power at higher frequencies. This was correlated with the increased variation in center-of-mass orientation occurring at frequencies near body resonance. This study established that appropriate choice of robot dynamics, as mediated by gait, frequency, and limb amplitude, can expand the terrains accessible to microrobots without the addition of sensing or closed-loop control.

The spider cuticle: a remarkable material toolbox for functional diversity

Engineered systems are typically based on a large variety of materials differing in composition and processing to provide the desired functionality. Nature, however, has evolved materials that are used for a wide range of functional challenges with minimal compositional changes. The exoskeletal cuticle of spiders, as well as of other arthropods such as insects and crustaceans, is based on a combination of chitin, protein, water and small amounts of organic cross-linkers or minerals. Spiders use it to obtain mechanical support structures and lever systems for locomotion, protection from adverse environmental influences, tools for piercing, cutting and interlocking, auxiliary structures for the transmission and filtering of sensory information, structural colours, transparent lenses for light manipulation and more. This paper illustrates the 'design space' of a single type of composite with varying internal architecture and its remarkable capability to serve a diversity of functions. Bioinspired Smart Materials With Externally-Stimulated Switchable Adhesion

Living organisms have evolved, over billions of years, to develop specialized biostructures with switchable adhesion for various purposes including climbing, perching, preying, sensing, and protecting. According to adhesion mechanisms, switchable adhesives can be divided into four categories: mechanically-based adhesion, liquid-mediated adhesion, physically-actuated adhesion and chemically-enhanced adhesion. Mimicking these biostructures could create smart materials with switchable adhesion, appealing for many engineering applications in robotics, sensors, advanced drug-delivery, protein separation, etc. Progress has been made in developing bioinspired materials with switchable adhesion modulated by external stimuli such as electrical signal, magnetic field, light, temperature, pH value, etc. This review will be focused on new advance in biomimetic design and synthesis of the materials and devices with switchable adhesion. The underlying mechanisms, design principles, and future directions are discussed for the development of high-performance smart surfaces with switchable adhesion.

Hard X-ray nano-holotomography with a Fresnel zone plate

X-ray phase contrast nanotomography enables imaging of a wide range of samples with high spatial resolution in 3D. Near-field holography, as one of the major phase contrast techniques, is often implemented using X-ray optics such as Kirkpatrick-Baez mirrors, waveguides and compound refractive lenses. However, these optics are often tailor-made for a specific beamline and challenging to implement and align. Here, we present a near-field holography setup based on Fresnel zone plates which is fast and easy to align and provides a smooth illumination and flat field. The imaging quality of different types of Fresnel zone plates is compared in terms of the flat-field quality, the achievable resolution and exposure efficiency i.e. the photons arriving at the detector. Overall, this setup is capable of imaging different types of samples at high spatial resolution of below 100 nm in 3D with access to the quantitative phase information.
