Strain-Mediated High Conductivity in Ultrathin Antiferromagnetic Metallic Nitrides

Syntropic spin alignment at the interface between ferromagnetic and superconducting nitrides

The magnetic correlations at the superconductor/ferromagnet (S/F) interfaces play a crucial role in realizing dissipation-less spin-based logic and memory technologies, such as triplet-supercurrent spin-valves and 'π' Josephson junctions. Here we report the observation of an induced large magnetic moment at high-quality nitride S/F interfaces. Using polarized neutron reflectometry and DC SQUID measurements, we quantitatively determined the magnetization profile of the S/F bilayer and confirmed that the induced magnetic moment in the adjacent superconductor only exists below T C. Interestingly, the direction of the induced moment in the superconductors was unexpectedly parallel to that in the ferromagnet, which contrasts with earlier findings in S/F heterostructures based on metals or oxides. First-principles calculations verified that the unusual interfacial spin texture observed in our study was caused by the Heisenberg direct exchange coupling with constant J∼4.28 meV through d-orbital overlapping and severe charge transfer across the interfaces. Our work establishes an incisive experimental probe for understanding the magnetic proximity behavior at S/F interfaces and provides a prototype epitaxial 'building block' for superconducting spintronics.

Growth of 2D Cr2 O3 -CrN Mosaic Heterostructures with Tunable Room-Temperature Ferromagnetism

2D magnets have generated much attention due to their potential for spintronic devices. Heterostructures of 2D magnets are interesting platforms for exploring physical phenomena and applications. However, the controlled growth of 2D room-temperature ferromagnetic heterostructures is challenging. Here, one-pot chemical vapor deposition growth of stable 2D Cr2 O3 -CrN mosaic heterostructures (MHs) is reported with a controlled ratio of components that possess robust room-temperature ferromagnetism. The 2D MHs consist of Cr2 O3 flakes with embedded CrN subdomains and the CrN:Cr2 O3 ratio can be tuned from 0% to 100% during growth. By changing the CrN:Cr2 O3 ratio, the ferromagnetism of the MHs (e.g., saturation magnetization, coercive field), which originates from the interfacial coupling between Cr2 O3 and CrN, can be controlled. Importantly, the obtained Cr2 O3 -CrN MHs are stable in air at elevated temperatures and have robust ferromagnetism with Curie temperature >400 K. This work presents a facile method for fabricating 2D MHs with tunable magnetism which will benefit high-temperature spintronics.

Two-Dimensional Atomically Thin Titanium Nitride via Topochemical Conversion

Titanium nitride as a typical transition metal nitride (TMN) has attracted increasing interest for its fascinating characteristics and widespread applications. However, the synthesis of two-dimensional (2D) atomically thin titanium nitride is still challenging which hinders its further research in electronic and optoelectronic fields. Here, 2D titanium nitride with a large area was prepared via in situ topochemical conversion of the titanate monolayer. The titanium nitride reveals a thickness-dependent metallic-to-semiconducting transition, where the atomically thin titanium nitride with a thickness of ∼1 nm exhibits an n-type semiconducting behavior and a highly sensitive photoresponse and displays photoswitchable resistance by repeated light irradiation. First-principles calculations confirm that the chemisorbed oxygen on the surface of the titanium nitride nanosheet depletes its electrons, while the light irradiation induced desorption of oxygen leads to increased electron doping and hence the conductance of titanium nitride. These results may allow the scalable synthesis of ultrathin TMNs and facilitate their fundamental physics research and next-generation optoelectronic applications.

Electronic correlations in epitaxial CrN thin film

Chromium nitride (CrN) spurred enormous interest due to its coupled magnetostructural and unique metal-insulator transition. The underneath electronic structure of CrN remains elusive. Herein, the electronic structure of epitaxial CrN thin film has been explored by employing resonant photoemission spectroscopy (RPES) and X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy study in combination with the first-principles calculations. The RPES study indicates the presence of a charge-transfer screened 3[Formula: see text] ([Formula: see text]: hole in the N-2[Formula: see text]) and 3[Formula: see text] final-states in the valence band regime. The combined experimental electronic structure along with the orbital resolved electronic density of states from the first-principles calculations reveals the presence of Cr(3[Formula: see text])-N(2[Formula: see text]) hybridized (3[Formula: see text]) states between lower Hubbard (3[Formula: see text]) and upper Hubbard (3[Formula: see text]) bands with onsite Coulomb repulsion energy (U) and charge-transfer energy ([Formula: see text]) estimated as [Formula: see text] 4.5 and 3.6 eV, respectively. It verifies the participation of ligand (N-2[Formula: see text]) states in low energy charge fluctuations and provides concrete evidence for the charge-transfer ([Formula: see text]U) insulating nature of CrN thin film.

Magnetic Stress-Driven Metal-Insulator Transition in Strongly Correlated Antiferromagnetic CrN

Traditionally, the Coulomb repulsion or Peierls instability causes the metal-insulator phase transitions in strongly correlated quantum materials. In comparison, magnetic stress is predicted to drive the metal-insulator transition in materials exhibiting strong spin-lattice coupling. However, this mechanism lacks experimental validation and an in-depth understanding. Here we demonstrate the existence of the magnetic stress-driven metal-insulator transition in an archetypal material, chromium nitride. Structural, magnetic, electronic transport characterization, and first-principles modeling analysis show that the phase transition temperature in CrN is directly proportional to the strain-controlled anisotropic magnetic stress. The compressive strain increases the magnetic stress, leading to the much-coveted room-temperature transition. In contrast, tensile strain and the inclusion of nonmagnetic cations weaken the magnetic stress and reduce the transition temperature. This discovery of a new physical origin of metal-insulator phase transition that unifies spin, charge, and lattice degrees of freedom in correlated materials marks a new paradigm and could lead to novel device functionalities.

Field-free spin-orbit torque switching via out-of-plane spin-polarization induced by an antiferromagnetic insulator/heavy metal interface

Manipulating spin polarization orientation is challenging but crucial for field-free spintronic devices. Although such manipulation has been demonstrated in a limited number of antiferromagnetic metal-based systems, the inevitable shunting effects from the metallic layer can reduce the overall device efficiency. In this study, we propose an antiferromagnetic insulator-based heterostructure NiO/Ta/Pt/Co/Pt for such spin polarization control without any shunting effect in the antiferromagnetic layer. We show that zero-field magnetization switching can be realized and is related to the out-of-plane component of spin polarization modulated by the NiO/Pt interface. The zero-field magnetization switching ratio can be effectively tuned by the substrates, in which the easy axis of NiO can be manipulated by the tensile or compressive strain from the substrates. Our work demonstrates that the insulating antiferromagnet based heterostructure is a promising platform to enhance the spin-orbital torque efficiency and achieve field-free magnetization switching, thus opening an avenue towards energy-efficient spintronic devices.

Emergent Magnetic States and Tunable Exchange Bias at 3d Nitride Heterointerfaces

Interfacial magnetism stimulates the discovery of giant magnetoresistance (MR) and spin-orbital coupling across the heterointerfaces, facilitating the intimate correlation between spin transport and complex magnetic structures. Over decades, functional heterointerfaces composed of nitrides have seldom been explored due to the difficulty in synthesizing high-quality nitride films with correct compositions. Here, the fabrication of single-crystalline ferromagnetic Fe₃ N thin films with precisely controlled thicknesses is reported. As film thickness decreases, the magnetization dramatically deteriorates, and the electronic state changes from metallic to insulating. Strikingly, the high-temperature ferromagnetism is maintained in a Fe₃ N layer with a thickness down to 2 u.c. (≈8 Å). The MR exhibits a strong in-plane anisotropy; meanwhile, the anomalous Hall resistivity reverses its sign when the Fe₃ N layer thickness exceeds 5 u.c. Furthermore, a sizable exchange bias is observed at the interfaces between a ferromagnetic Fe₃ N and an antiferromagnetic CrN. The exchange bias field and saturation moment strongly depend on the controllable bending curvature using the cylinder diameter engineering technique, implying the tunable magnetic states under lattice deformation. This work provides a guideline for exploring functional nitride films and applying their interfacial phenomena for innovative perspectives toward practical applications.

Flexomagnetism and vertically graded Néel temperature of antiferromagnetic Cr2O3 thin films

Antiferromagnetic insulators are a prospective materials platform for magnonics, spin superfluidity, THz spintronics, and non-volatile data storage. A magnetomechanical coupling in antiferromagnets offers vast advantages in the control and manipulation of the primary order parameter yet remains largely unexplored. Here, we discover a new member in the family of flexoeffects in thin films of Cr2O3. We demonstrate that a gradient of mechanical strain can impact the magnetic phase transition resulting in the distribution of the Néel temperature along the thickness of a 50-nm-thick film. The inhomogeneous reduction of the antiferromagnetic order parameter induces a flexomagnetic coefficient of about 15 μB nm−2. The antiferromagnetic ordering in the inhomogeneously strained films can persist up to 100 °C, rendering Cr2O3 relevant for industrial electronics applications. Strain gradient in Cr2O3 thin films enables fundamental research on magnetomechanics and thermodynamics of antiferromagnetic solitons, spin waves and artificial spin ice systems in magnetic materials with continuously graded parameters.

Piezoelectric Strain-Controlled Magnon Spin Current Transport in an Antiferromagnet

As the core of spintronics, the transport of spin aims at a low-dissipation data process. The pure spin current transmission carried by magnons in antiferromagnetic insulators is natively endowed with superiority such as long-distance propagation and ultrafast speed. However, the traditional control of magnon transport in an antiferromagnet via a magnetic field or temperature variation adds critical inconvenience to practical applications. Controlling magnon transport by electric methods is a promising way to overcome such embarrassment and to promote the development of energy-efficient antiferromagnetic logic. Here, the experimental realization of an electric field-induced piezoelectric strain-controlled magnon spin current transmission through the antiferromagnetic insulator in the Y₃Fe₅O₁₂/Cr₂O₃/Pt trilayer is reported. An efficient and nonvolatile manipulation of magnon propagation/blocking is achieved by changing the relative direction between the Néel vector and spin polarization, which is tuned by ferroelastic strain from the piezoelectric substrate. The piezoelectric strain-controlled antiferromagnetic magnon transport opens an avenue for the exploitation of antiferromagnet-based spin/magnon transistors with ultrahigh energy efficiency.

Room-Temperature Ferromagnetism at an Oxide-Nitride Interface

Heterointerfaces have led to the discovery of novel electronic and magnetic states because of their strongly entangled electronic degrees of freedom. Single-phase chromium compounds always exhibit antiferromagnetism following the prediction of the Goodenough-Kanamori rules. So far, exchange coupling between chromium ions via heteroanions has not been explored and the associated quantum states are unknown. Here, we report the successful epitaxial synthesis and characterization of chromium oxide (Cr_{2}O_{3})-chromium nitride (CrN) superlattices. Room-temperature ferromagnetic spin ordering is achieved at the interfaces between these two antiferromagnets, and the magnitude of the effect decays with increasing layer thickness. First-principles calculations indicate that robust ferromagnetic spin interaction between Cr^{3+} ions via anion-hybridization across the interface yields the lowest total energy. This work opens the door to fundamental understanding of the unexpected and exceptional properties of oxide-nitride interfaces and provides access to hidden phases at low-dimensional quantum heterostructures.

Electronic-structure evolution of SrFeO3-xduring topotactic phase transformation

Oxygen-vacancy-induced topotactic phase transformation between the ABO_2.5brownmillerite structure and the ABO₃perovskite structure attracts ever-increasing attention due to the perspective applications in catalysis, clean energy field, and memristors. However, a detailed investigation of the electronic-structure evolution during the topotactic phase transformation for understanding the underlying mechanism is highly desired. In this work, multiple analytical methods were used to explore evolution of the electronic structure of SrFeO_3-xthin films during the topotactic phase transformation. The results indicate that the increase in oxygen content induces a new unoccupied state of O 2pcharacter near the Fermi energy, inducing the insulator-to-metal transition. More importantly, the hole states are more likely constrained to thedx²-y²orbital than to thed3z²-r²orbital. Our results reveal an unambiguous evolution of the electronic structure of SrFeO_3-xfilms during topotactic phase transformation, which is crucial not only for fundamental understanding but also for perspective applications such as solid-state oxide fuel cells, catalysts, and memristor devices.
