Nickelate Superconductivity without Rare-Earth Magnetism: (La,Sr)NiO2

On the Topotactic Phase Transition Achieving Superconducting Infinite-Layer Nickelates

Topotactic reduction is critical to a wealth of phase transitions of current interest, including synthesis of the superconducting nickelate Nd0.8Sr0.2NiO2, reduced from the initial Nd0.8Sr0.2NiO3/SrTiO3 heterostructure. Due to the highly sensitive and often damaging nature of the topotactic reduction, however, only a handful of research groups have been able to reproduce the superconductivity results. A series of in situ synchrotron-based investigations reveal that this is due to the necessary formation of an initial, ultrathin layer at the Nd0.8Sr0.2NiO3 surface that helps to mediate the introduction of hydrogen into the film such that apical oxygens are first removed from the Nd0.8Sr0.2NiO3 / SrTiO3 (001) interface and delivered into the reducing environment. This allows the square-planar / perovskite interface to stabilize and propagate from the bottom to the top of the film without the formation of interphase defects. Importantly, neither geometric rotations in the square planar structure nor significant incorporation of hydrogen within the films is detected, obviating its need for superconductivity. These findings unveil the structural basis underlying the transformation pathway and provide important guidance on achieving the superconducting phase in reduced nickelate systems.

Electronic correlations and partial gap in the bilayer nickelate La3Ni2O7

The discovery of superconductivity with a critical temperature of about 80 K in La3Ni2O7 single crystals under pressure has received enormous attention. La3Ni2O7 is not superconducting under ambient pressure but exhibits a transition at T ∗ ≃ 115 K. Understanding the electronic correlations and charge dynamics is an important step towards the origin of superconductivity and other instabilities. Here, our optical study shows that La3Ni2O7 features strong electronic correlations which significantly reduce the electron's kinetic energy and place this system in the proximity of the Mott phase. The low-frequency optical conductivity reveals two Drude components arising from multiple bands at the Fermi level. The transition at T ∗ removes the Drude component exhibiting non-Fermi liquid behavior, whereas the one with Fermi-liquid behavior is barely affected. These observations in combination with theoretical results suggest that the Fermi surface dominated by the Ni-d 3 z 2 - r 2 orbital is removed due to the transition at T ∗. Our experimental results provide pivotal information for understanding the transition at T ∗ and superconductivity in La3Ni2O7.

Extensive hydrogen incorporation is not necessary for superconductivity in topotactically reduced nickelates

A key open question in the study of layered superconducting nickelate films is the role that hydrogen incorporation into the lattice plays in the appearance of the superconducting state. Due to the challenges of stabilizing highly crystalline square planar nickelate films, films are prepared by the deposition of a more stable parent compound which is then transformed into the target phase via a topotactic reaction with a strongly reducing agent such as CaH2. Recent studies, both experimental and theoretical, have introduced the possibility that the incorporation of hydrogen from the reducing agent into the nickelate lattice may be critical for the superconductivity. In this work, we use secondary ion mass spectrometry to examine superconducting La1-xXxNiO2 / SrTiO3 (X = Ca and Sr) and Nd6Ni5O12 / NdGaO3 films, along with non-superconducting NdNiO2 / SrTiO3 and (Nd,Sr)NiO2 / SrTiO3. We find no evidence for extensive hydrogen incorporation across a broad range of samples, including both superconducting and non-superconducting films. Theoretical calculations indicate that hydrogen incorporation is broadly energetically unfavorable in these systems, supporting our conclusion that extensive hydrogen incorporation is not generally required to achieve a superconducting state in layered square-planar nickelates.

Emergence of Competing Stripe Phases in Undoped Infinite-Layer Nickelates

Recent discovery of superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates has ignited renewed theoretical and experimental interest in the role of electronic correlations in their properties. Here, using first-principles simulations, we show that the parent compound of the nickelate family, LaNiO_{2}, hosts competing low-energy stripe phases, similar to doped cuprates. The stripe states are shown to be driven by multiorbital electronic mechanisms and Peierls distortions. Our study indicates that both strong correlations and electron-phonon coupling effects play a key role in the physics of infinite-layer nickelates, and sheds light on the microscopic origin of electronic inhomogeneity and the lack of long-range order in the nickelates.

Origin of a Topotactic Reduction Effect for Superconductivity in Infinite-Layer Nickelates

Topotactic reduction utilizing metal hydrides as reagents has emerged as an effective approach to achieve exceptionally low oxidization states of metal ions and unconventional coordination networks. This method opens avenues to the development of entirely new functional materials, with one notable example being the infinite-layer nickelate superconductors. However, the reduction effect on the atomic reconstruction and electronic structures-crucial for superconductivity-remains largely unresolved. We designed two sets of control Nd_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}NiO_{2} thin films and used secondary ion mass spectroscopy to highlight the absence of reduction-induced hydrogen intercalation. X-ray absorption spectroscopy revealed a significant linear dichroism with dominant Ni 3d_{x2-y2} orbitals on superconducting samples, indicating a Ni single-band nature of infinite-layer nickelates. Consistent with the superconducting T_{c}, the Ni 3d orbitals asymmetry manifests a domelike dependence on the reduction duration. Our results unveil the critical role of reduction in modulating the Ni-3d orbital polarization and its impact on the superconducting properties.

Advancing Superconductivity with Interface Engineering

The development of superconducting materials has attracted significant attention not only for their improved performance, such as high transition temperature (TC), but also for the exploration of their underlying physical mechanisms. Recently, considerable efforts have been focused on interfaces of materials, a distinct category capable of inducing superconductivity at non-superconducting material interfaces or augmenting the TC at the interface between a superconducting material and a non-superconducting material. Here, two distinct types of interfaces along with their unique characteristics are reviewed: interfacial superconductivity and interface-enhanced superconductivity, with a focus on the crucial factors and potential mechanisms responsible for enhancing superconducting performance. A series of materials systems is discussed, encompassing both historical developments and recent progress from the perspectives of technical innovations and the exploration of new material classes. The overarching goal is to illuminate pathways toward achieving high TC, expanding the potential of superconducting parameters across interfaces, and propelling superconductivity research toward practical, high-temperature applications.

Superconductivity in Freestanding Infinite-Layer Nickelate Membranes

The observation of superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates has attracted significant attention due to its potential as a new platform for exploring high-Tc superconductivity. However, thus far, superconductivity has only been observed in epitaxial thin films, which limits the manipulation capabilities and modulation methods compared to two-dimensional exfoliated materials. Given the exceptionally giant strain tunability and stacking capability of freestanding membranes, separating superconducting nickelates from the as-grown substrate is a novel way to engineer the superconductivity and uncover the underlying physics. Herein, this work reports the synthesis of the superconducting freestanding La0.8Sr0.2NiO2 membranes (T c zero = 10.6 K ${T}_{\mathrm{c}}^{\mathrm{zero}}\ =\ 10.6\ \mathrm{K}$ ), emphasizing the crucial roles of the interface engineering in the precursor phase film growth and the quick transfer process in achieving superconductivity. This work offers a new versatile platform for investigating superconductivity in nickelates, such as the pairing symmetry via constructing Josephson tunneling junctions and higher Tc values via high-pressure experiments.

Cuprate-like electronic structures in infinite-layer nickelates with substantial hole dopings

Superconducting infinite-layer (IL) nickelates offer a new platform for investigating the long-standing problem of high-temperature superconductivity. Many models were proposed to understand the superconducting mechanism of nickelates based on the calculated electronic structure, and the multiple Fermi surfaces and multiple orbitals involved create complications and controversial conclusions. Over the past five years, the lack of direct measurements of the electronic structure has hindered the understanding of nickelate superconductors. Here we fill this gap by directly resolving the electronic structures of the parent compound LaNiO2 and superconducting La0.8Ca0.2NiO2 using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We find that their Fermi surfaces consist of a quasi-2D hole pocket and a 3D electron pocket at the Brillouin zone corner, whose volumes change upon Ca doping. The Fermi surface topology and band dispersion of the hole pocket closely resemble those observed in hole-doped cuprates. However, the cuprate-like band exhibits significantly higher hole doping in superconducting La0.8Ca0.2NiO2 compared to superconducting cuprates, highlighting the disparities in the electronic states of the superconducting phase. Our observations highlight the novel aspects of the IL nickelates, and pave the way toward the microscopic understanding of the IL nickelate family and its superconductivity.

Isotropic Quantum Griffiths Singularity in Nd_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}NiO_{2} Infinite-Layer Superconducting Thin Films

This work reports on the emergence of quantum Griffiths singularity (QGS) associated with the magnetic field induced superconductor-metal transition (SMT) in unconventional Nd_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}NiO_{2} infinite layer superconducting thin films. The system manifests isotropic SMT features under both in-plane and perpendicular magnetic fields. Importantly, after scaling analysis of the isothermal magnetoresistance curves, the obtained effective dynamic critical exponents demonstrate divergent behavior when approaching the zero-temperature critical point B_{c}^{*}, identifying the QGS characteristics. Moreover, the quantum fluctuation associated with the QGS can quantitatively explain the upturn of the upper critical field around zero temperature for both the in-plane and perpendicular magnetic fields in the phase boundary of SMT. These properties indicate that the QGS in the Nd_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}NiO_{2} superconducting thin film is isotropic. Moreover, a higher magnetic field gives rise to a metallic state with the resistance-temperature relation R(T) exhibiting lnT dependence among the 2-10 K range and T^{2} dependence of resistance below 1.5 K, which is significant evidence of Kondo scattering. The interplay between isotropic QGS and Kondo scattering in the unconventional Nd_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}NiO_{2} superconductor can illustrate the important role of rare region in QGS and help to uncover the exotic superconductivity mechanism in this system.

Magnetic excitations in strained infinite-layer nickelate PrNiO2 films

Strongly correlated materials respond sensitively to external perturbations such as strain, pressure, and doping. In the recently discovered superconducting infinite-layer nickelates, the superconducting transition temperature can be enhanced via only ~ 1% compressive strain-tuning with the root of such enhancement still being elusive. Using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS), we investigate the magnetic excitations in infinite-layer PrNiO2 thin films grown on two different substrates, namely SrTiO3 (STO) and (LaAlO3)0.3(Sr2TaAlO6)0.7 (LSAT) enforcing different strain on the nickelates films. The magnon bandwidth of PrNiO2 shows only marginal response to strain-tuning, in sharp contrast to the enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature Tc in the doped superconducting samples. These results suggest the bandwidth of spin excitations of the parent compounds is similar under strain while Tc in the doped ones is not, and thus provide important empirics for the understanding of superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates.

In Situ Preparation of Superconducting Infinite-Layer Nickelate Thin Films with Atomically Flat Surface

Since their discovery, the infinite-layer nickelates have been regarded as an appealing system for gaining deeper insights into high-temperature superconductivity (HTSC). However, the synthesis of superconducting samples has been proven to be challenging. Here, an ultrahigh vacuum (UHV)in situ ${\mathrm{\text{in situ}}}$ reduction method is developed using atomic hydrogen as a reducing agent and is applied in the lanthanum nickelate system. The reduction parameters, including the reduction temperature (TR) and hydrogen pressure (PH), are systematically explored. It is found that the reduction window for achieving superconducting transition is quite wide, reaching nearly 80°C in TR and three orders of magnitude in PH when the reduction time is set to 30 min. And there exists an optimal PH for achieving the highest Tc if both TR and reduction time are fixed. More prominently, as confirmed by atomic force microscopy and scanning transmission electron microscopy, the atomically flat surface can be preserved during thein situ ${\mathrm{\text{in situ}}}$ reduction process, providing advantages over theex situ ${\mathrm{\text{ex situ}}}$ CaH2 method for surface-sensitive experiments.

Atomic scale disorder and reconstruction in bulk infinite-layer nickelates lacking superconductivity

The recent discovery of superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelate films has sparked significant interest and expanded the realm of superconductors, in which the infinite-layer structure and proper chemical doping are both of the essence. Nonetheless, the reasons for the absence of superconductivity in bulk infinite-layer nickelates remain puzzling. Herein, we investigate atomic defects and electronic structures in bulk infinite-layer Nd0.8Sr0.2NiO2 using scanning transmission electron microscopy. Our observations reveal the presence of three-dimensional (3D) block-like structural domains resulting from intersecting defect structures, disrupting the continuity within crystal grains, which could be a crucial factor in giving rise to the insulating character and inhibiting the emergence of superconductivity. Moreover, the infinite-layer structure, without complete topotactic reduction, retains interstitial oxygen atoms on the Nd atomic plane in bulk nickelates, possibly further aggravating the local distortions of NiO2 planes and hindering the superconductivity. These findings shed light on the existence of structural and atomic defects in bulk nickelates and provide valuable insights into the influence of proper topotactic reduction and structural orders on superconductivity.

Toward Reliable Synthesis of Superconducting Infinite Layer Nickelate Thin Films by Topochemical Reduction

Infinite layer (IL) nickelates provide a new route beyond copper oxides to address outstanding questions in the field of unconventional superconductivity. However, their synthesis poses considerable challenges, largely hindering experimental research on this new class of oxide superconductors. That synthesis is achieved in a two-step process that yields the most thermodynamically stable perovskite phase first, then the IL phase by topotactic reduction, the quality of the starting phase playing a crucial role. Here, a reliable synthesis of superconducting IL  nickelate films is reported after successive topochemical reductions of a parent perovskite phase with nearly optimal stoichiometry. Careful analysis of the transport properties of the incompletely reduced films reveals an improvement in the strange metal behavior of their normal state resistivity over subsequent topochemical reductions, offering insight into the reduction process.

Novel 2DEG System at the HfO2/STO Interface

Multifunctional integration in a single device has always been a hot research topic, especially for contradictory phenomena, one of which is the coexistence of ferroelectricity and metallicity. The complex oxide heterostructures, as symmetric breaking systems, provide a great possibility to incorporate different properties. Moreover, finding a series of oxide heterostructures to achieve this goal remains as a challenge. Here, taking the advantage of different physical phenomena, we use H2 plasma to pretreat the SrTiO3 (STO) substrate and then fabricate HfO2/STO heterostructures with it. The novel, well-repeatable metallic two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) is directly obtained at the heterointerfaces without any further complex procedures, while the obvious ferroelectric-like behavior and Rashba spin-orbit coupling are also observed. The understanding of the mechanism, as well as the modified facile preparation procedure, would be meaningful for further development of ferroelectric metal in complex oxide heterostructures.

Unconventional superconductivity without doping in infinite-layer nickelates under pressure

High-temperature unconventional superconductivity quite generically emerges from doping a strongly correlated parent compound, often (close to) an antiferromagnetic insulator. The recently developed dynamical vertex approximation is a state-of-the-art technique that has quantitatively predicted the superconducting dome of nickelates. Here, we apply it to study the effect of pressure in the infinite-layer nickelate SrxPr1-xNiO2. We reproduce the increase of the critical temperature (Tc) under pressure found in experiment up to 12 GPa. According to our results, Tc can be further increased with higher pressures. Even without Sr-doping the parent compound, PrNiO2, will become a high-temperature superconductor thanks to a strongly enhanced self-doping of the Nid x 2 - y 2 orbital under pressure. With a maximal Tc of 100 K around 100 GPa, nickelate superconductors can reach that of the best cuprates.

Robust Superconductivity in Infinite-Layer Nickelates

The recent discovery of nickelate superconductivity represents an important step toward understanding the four-decade mastery of unconventional high-temperature superconductivity. However, the synthesis of the infinite-layer nickelate superconductors shows great challenges. Particularly, surface capping layers are usually unitized to facilitate the sample synthesis. This leads to an important question whether nickelate superconductors with d9 configuration and ultralow valence of Ni1+ are in metastable state and whether nickelate superconductivity can be robust? In this work, a series of redox cycling experiments are performed across the phase transition between perovskite Nd0.8Sr0.2NiO3 and infinite-layer Nd0.8Sr0.2NiO2. The infinite-layer Nd0.8Sr0.2NiO2 is quite robust in the redox environment and can survive the cycling experiments with unchanged crystallographic quality. However, as the cycling number goes on, the perovskite Nd0.8Sr0.2NiO3 shows structural degradation, suggesting stability of nickelate superconductivity is not restricted by the ultralow valence of Ni1+, but by the quality of its perovskite precursor. The observed robustness of infinite-layer Nd0.8Sr0.2NiO2 up to ten redox cycles further indicates that if an ideal high-quality perovskite precursor can be obtained, infinite-layer nickelate superconductivity can be very stable and sustainable under environmental conditions. This work provides important implications for potential device applications for nickelate superconductors.

In Situ X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy of LaFeO3 and LaFeO3/LaNiO3 Thin Films in the Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution Reaction

We study the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction using in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) to track the dynamics of the valence state and the covalence of the metal ions of LaFeO3 and LaFeO3/LaNiO3 thin films. The active materials are 8 unit cells grown epitaxially on 100 nm conductive La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 layers using pulsed laser deposition (PLD). The perovskite layers are supported on monolayer Ca2Nb3O10 nanosheet-buffered 100 nm SiNx membranes. The in situ Fe and Ni K-edges XAS spectra were measured from the backside of the SiNx membrane using fluorescence yield detection under electrocatalytic reaction conditions. The XAS spectra show significant spectral changes, which indicate that (1) the metal (co)valencies increase, and (2) the number of 3d electrons remains constant with applied potential. We find that the whole 8 unit cells react to the potential changes, including the buried LaNiO3 film.

Absence of 3a0 charge density wave order in the infinite-layer nickelate NdNiO2

A hallmark of many unconventional superconductors is the presence of many-body interactions that give rise to broken-symmetry states intertwined with superconductivity. Recent resonant soft X-ray scattering experiments report commensurate 3a0 charge density wave order in infinite-layer nickelates, which has important implications regarding the universal interplay between charge order and superconductivity in both cuprates and nickelates. Here we present X-ray scattering and spectroscopy measurements on a series of NdNiO2+x samples, which reveal that the signatures of charge density wave order are absent in fully reduced, single-phase NdNiO2. The 3a0 superlattice peak instead originates from a partially reduced impurity phase where excess apical oxygens form ordered rows with three-unit-cell periodicity. The absence of any observable charge density wave order in NdNiO2 highlights a crucial difference between the phase diagrams of cuprate and nickelate superconductors.

Long-Range Structural Order in a Hidden Phase of Ruddlesden-Popper Bilayer Nickelate La3Ni2O7

The recent discovery of superconductivity in the Ruddlesden-Popper bilayer nickelate, specifically La3Ni2O7, has generated significant interest in the exploration of high-temperature superconductivity within this material family. In this study, we present the crystallographic and electrical resistivity properties of two distinct Ruddlesden-Popper nickelates: the bilayer La3Ni2O7 (referred to as 2222-phase) and a previously uncharacterized phase, La3Ni2O7 (1313-phase). The 2222-phase is characterized by a pseudo F-centered orthorhombic lattice, featuring bilayer perovskite [LaNiO3] layers interspaced by rock salt [LaO] layers, forming a repeated ...2222... sequence. Intriguingly, the 1313-phase, which displays semiconducting properties, crystallizes in the Cmmm space group and exhibits a pronounced predilection for a C-centered orthorhombic lattice. Within this structure, the perovskite [LaNiO3] layers exhibit a distinctive long-range ordered arrangement, alternating between single- and trilayer configurations, resulting in a ...1313... sequence. This report contributes to novel insights into the crystallography and the structure-property relationship of Ruddlesden-Popper nickelates, paving the way for further investigations into their unique physical properties.

Direct observation of strong surface reconstruction in partially reduced nickelate films

The polarity of a surface can affect the electronic and structural properties of oxide thin films through electrostatic effects. Understanding the mechanism behind these effects requires knowledge of the atomic structure and electrostatic characteristics at the surface. In this study, we use annular bright-field imaging to investigate the surface structure of a Pr0.8Sr0.2NiO2+x (0 < x < 1) film. We observe a polar distortion coupled with octahedral rotations in a fully oxidized Pr0.8Sr0.2NiO3 sample, and a stronger polar distortion in a partially reduced sample. Its spatial depth extent is about three unit cells from the surface. Additionally, we use four-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy (4D-STEM) to directly image the local atomic electric field surrounding Ni atoms near the surface and discover distinct valence variations of Ni atoms, which are confirmed by atomic-resolution electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS). Our results suggest that the strong surface reconstruction in the reduced sample is closely related to the formation of oxygen vacancies from topochemical reduction. These findings provide insights into the understanding and evolution of surface polarity at the atomic level.

s^{±}-Wave Pairing and the Destructive Role of Apical-Oxygen Deficiencies in La_{3}Ni_{2}O_{7} under Pressure

Recently, the bilayer perovskite nickelate La_{3}Ni_{2}O_{7} has been reported to show evidence of high-temperature superconductivity (SC) under a moderate pressure of about 14 GPa. To investigate the superconducting mechanism, pairing symmetry, and the role of apical-oxygen deficiencies in this material, we perform a random-phase approximation based study on a bilayer model consisting of the d_{x^{2}-y^{2}} and d_{3z^{2}-r^{2}} orbitals of Ni atoms in both the pristine crystal and the crystal with apical-oxygen deficiencies. Our analysis reveals an s^{±}-wave pairing symmetry driven by spin fluctuations. The crucial role of pressure lies in that it induces the emergence of the γ pocket, which is involved in the strongest Fermi-surface nesting. We further found the emergence of local moments in the vicinity of apical-oxygen deficiencies, which significantly suppresses the T_{c}. Therefore, it is possible to significantly enhance the T_{c} by eliminating oxygen deficiencies during the synthesis of the samples.

Kondo scattering in underdoped Nd1-xSrxNiO2 infinite-layer superconducting thin films

The recent discovery of superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates generates tremendous research endeavors, but the ground state of their parent compounds is still under debate. Here, we report experimental evidence for the dominant role of Kondo scattering in the underdoped Nd1-xSrxNiO2 thin films. A resistivity minimum associated with logarithmic temperature dependence in both longitudinal and Hall resistivities are observed in the underdoped Nd1-xSrxNiO2 samples before the superconducting transition. At lower temperatures down to 0.04 K, the resistivities become saturated, following the prediction of the Kondo model. A linear scaling behavior [Formula: see text] between anomalous Hall conductivity [Formula: see text] and conductivity [Formula: see text]is revealed, verifying the dominant Kondo scattering at low temperature. The effect of weak (anti-)localization is found to be secondary. Our experiments can help in clarifying the basic physics in the underdoped Nd1-xSrxNiO2 infinite-layer thin films.

Intermittent Defect Fluctuations in Oxide Heterostructures

The heterogeneous nature, local presence, and dynamic evolution of defects typically govern the ionic and electronic properties of a wide variety of functional materials. While the last 50 years have seen considerable efforts into development of new methods to identify the nature of defects in complex materials, such as the perovskite oxides, very little is known about defect dynamics and their influence on the functionality of a material. Here, the discovery of the intermittent behavior of point defects (oxygen vacancies) in oxide heterostructures employing X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy is reported. Local fluctuations between two ordered phases in strained SrCoOx with different degrees of stability of the oxygen vacancies are observed. Ab-initio-informed phase-field modeling reveals that fluctuations between the competing ordered phases are modulated by the oxygen ion/vacancy interaction energy and epitaxial strain. The results demonstrate how defect dynamics, evidenced by measurement and modeling of their temporal fluctuations, give rise to stochastic properties that now can be fully characterized using coherent X-rays, coupled for the first time to multiscale modeling in functional complex oxide heterostructures. The study and its findings open new avenues for engineering the dynamical response of functional materials used in neuromorphic and electrochemical applications.

Photoinduced Phase Transition in Infinite-Layer Nickelates

The quantum phase transition caused by regulating the electronic correlation in strongly correlated quantum materials has been a research hotspot in condensed matter science. Herein, a photon-induced quantum phase transition from the Kondo-Mott insulating state to the low temperature metallic one accompanying with the magnetoresistance changing from negative to positive in the infinite-layer NdNiO2 films is reported, where the antiferromagnetic coupling among the Ni1+ localized spins and the Kondo effect are effectively suppressed by manipulating the correlation of Ni-3d and Nd-5d electrons under the photoirradiation. Moreover, the critical temperature Tc of the superconducting-like transition exhibits a dome-shaped evolution with the maximum up to ≈42 K, and the electrons dominate the transport process proved by the Hall effect measurements. These findings not only make the photoinduction a promising way to control the quantum phase transition by manipulating the electronic correlation in Mott-like insulators, but also shed some light on the possibility of the superconducting in electron-doped nickelates.

Enhanced Rashba Spin Orbit Coupling and Magnetic Behavior at Oxide Heterointerfaces by Optical Gating

Complex oxide heterointerfaces have been a hot research spot due to their rich physical phenomena and broad quantum coherence that respond to multiple external stimuli. Among these external stimuli, light is a very powerful one to manipulate properties such as carrier density and spin characteristics. However, achieving a light-magnetic correlation is in high demand for multifield responding devices, and its intrinsic mechanism remains unclear. Here, by illuminating Nd0.86Sr0.14Al0.86Ni0.14O3-SrTiO3 heterointerfaces using 360 nm light, we observe a series of interesting physical phenomena, like enhanced magnetoresistance (MR). More interestingly, a band splitting and strong Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effect occur after illumination, accompanied by a magnetic feature and thus leading to an anomalous Hall effect (AHE). Upon optical gating, the magnetism can be caused by Rashba SOC induced spin-orbit torque (SOT). The work will be sure to have great importance in both theoretical studies and all-oxide devices.

An electronic origin of charge order in infinite-layer nickelates

A charge order (CO) with a wavevector [Formula: see text] is observed in infinite-layer nickelates. Here we use first-principles calculations to demonstrate a charge-transfer-driven CO mechanism in infinite-layer nickelates, which leads to a characteristic Ni1+-Ni2+-Ni1+ stripe state. For every three Ni atoms, due to the presence of near-Fermi-level conduction bands, Hubbard interaction on Ni-d orbitals transfers electrons on one Ni atom to conduction bands and leaves electrons on the other two Ni atoms to become more localized. We further derive a low-energy effective model to elucidate that the CO state arises from a delicate competition between Hubbard interaction on Ni-d orbitals and charge transfer energy between Ni-d orbitals and conduction bands. With physically reasonable parameters, [Formula: see text] CO state is more stable than uniform paramagnetic state and usual checkerboard antiferromagnetic state. Our work highlights the multi-band nature of infinite-layer nickelates, which leads to some distinctive correlated properties that are not found in cuprates.

Evidence for Anisotropic Superconductivity Beyond Pauli Limit in Infinite-Layer Lanthanum Nickelates

After being expected to be a promising analog to cuprates for decades, superconductivity has recently been discovered in infinite-layer nickelates, providing new opportunities to explore mechanisms of high-temperature superconductivity. However, in sharp contrast to the single-band and anisotropic superconductivity in cuprates, nickelates exhibit a multi-band electronic structure and an unexpected isotropic superconductivity as reported recently, which challenges the cuprate-like picture in nickelates. Here, it is shown that strong anisotropic magnetotransport behaviors exist in La-based nickelate films with enhanced crystallinity and superconductivity (T c onset $T_{\rm{c}}^{{\rm{onset}}}$ = 18.8 K,T c zero $T_{\rm{c}}^{{\rm{zero}}}$ = 16.5 K). The upper critical fields are anisotropic and violate the estimated Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) Pauli limit (H Pauli , μ = 1 μ B = 1.86 × T c , H = 0 ${H}_{\mathrm{Pauli},\mu =1{\mu}_{B}}=1.86\ensuremath{\times{}}{T}_{\mathrm{c},H=0}$ ) for in-plane magnetic fields. Moreover, the anisotropic superconductivity is further manifested by the cusp-like peak of the angle-dependent Tc and the vortex motion anisotropy under external magnetic fields.

Superconducting Nd1-xEuxNiO2 thin films using in situ synthesis

We report on superconductivity in Nd_1-xEu_xNiO₂ using Eu as a 4f dopant of the parent NdNiO₂ infinite-layer compound. We use an all-in situ molecular beam epitaxy reduction process to achieve the superconducting phase, providing an alternate method to the ex situ CaH₂ reduction process to induce superconductivity in the infinite-layer nickelates. The Nd_1-xEu_xNiO₂ samples exhibit a step-terrace structure on their surfaces, have a T_c onset of 21 K at x = 0.25, and have a large upper critical field that may be related to Eu 4f doping.

Linear-in-temperature resistivity for optimally superconducting (Nd,Sr)NiO2

The occurrence of superconductivity in proximity to various strongly correlated phases of matter has drawn extensive focus on their normal state properties, to develop an understanding of the state from which superconductivity emerges^1-4. The recent finding of superconductivity in layered nickelates raises similar interests^5-8. However, transport measurements of doped infinite-layer nickelate thin films have been hampered by materials limitations of these metastable compounds: in particular, a high density of extended defects^9-11. Here, by moving to a substrate (LaAlO₃)_0.3(Sr₂TaAlO₆)_0.7 that better stabilizes the growth and reduction conditions, we can synthesize the doping series of Nd_1-xSr_xNiO₂ essentially free from extended defects. In their absence, the normal state resistivity shows a low-temperature upturn in the underdoped regime, linear behaviour near optimal doping and quadratic temperature dependence for overdoping. This is phenomenologically similar to the copper oxides^2,12 despite key distinctions-namely, the absence of an insulating parent compound^5,6,9,10, multiband electronic structure^13,14 and a Mott-Hubbard orbital alignment rather than the charge-transfer insulator of the copper oxides^15,16. We further observe an enhancement of superconductivity, both in terms of transition temperature and range of doping. These results indicate a convergence in the electronic properties of both superconducting families as the scale of disorder in the nickelates is reduced.

Unconventional Giant "Magnetoresistance" in Bosonic Semiconducting Diamond Nanorings

The emergence of superconductivity in doped insulators such as cuprates and pnictides coincides with their doping-driven insulator-metal transitions. Above the critical doping threshold, a metallic state sets in at high temperatures, while superconductivity sets in at low temperatures. An unanswered question is whether the formation of Cooper pairsin a well-established metal will inevitably transform the host material into a superconductor, as manifested by a resistance drop. Here, this question is addressed by investigating the electrical transport in nanoscale rings (full loops) and half loops manufactured from heavily boron-doped diamond. It is shown that in contrast to the diamond half-loops (DHLs) exhibiting a metal-superconductor transition, the diamond nanorings (DNRs) demonstrate a sharp resistance increase up to 430% and a giant negative "magnetoresistance" below the superconducting transition temperature of the starting material. The finding of the unconventional giant negative "magnetoresistance", as distinct from existing categories of magnetoresistance, that is, the conventional giant magnetoresistance in magnetic multilayers, the colossal magnetoresistance in perovskites, and the geometric magnetoresistance in semiconductor-metal hybrids, reveals the transformation of the DNRs from metals to bosonic semiconductors upon the formation of Cooper pairs. DNRs like these could be used to manipulate Cooper pairs in superconducting quantum devices.

Modulations in Superconductors: Probes of Underlying Physics

The importance of modulations is elevated to an unprecedented level, due to the delicate conditions required to bring out exotic phenomena in quantum materials, such as topological materials, magnetic materials, and superconductors. Recently, state-of-the-art modulation techniques in material science, such as electric-double-layer transistor, piezoelectric-based strain apparatus, angle twisting, and nanofabrication, have been utilized in superconductors. They not only efficiently increase the tuning capability to the broader ranges but also extend the tuning dimensionality to unprecedented degrees of freedom, including quantum fluctuations of competing phases, electronic correlation, and phase coherence essential to global superconductivity. Here, for a comprehensive review, these techniques together with the established modulation methods, such as elemental substitution, annealing, and polarization-induced gating, are contextualized. Depending on the mechanism of each method, the modulations are categorized into stoichiometric manipulation, electrostatic gating, mechanical modulation, and geometrical design. Their recent advances are highlighted by applications in newly discovered superconductors, e.g., nickelates, Kagome metals, and magic-angle graphene. Overall, the review is to provide systematic modulations in emergent superconductors and serve as the coordinate for future investigations, which can stimulate researchers in superconductivity and other fields to perform various modulations toward a thorough understanding of quantum materials.

Effects of rare-earth magnetism on the superconducting upper critical field in infinite-layer nickelates

The search for superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates was motivated by analogy to the cuprates, and this perspective has framed much of the initial consideration of this material. However, a growing number of studies have highlighted the involvement of rare-earth orbitals; in that context, the consequences of varying the rare-earth element in the superconducting nickelates have been much debated. Here, we show notable differences in the magnitude and anisotropy of the superconducting upper critical field across the La-, Pr-, and Nd-nickelates. These distinctions originate from the 4f electron characteristics of the rare-earth ions in the lattice: They are absent for La³⁺, nonmagnetic for the Pr³⁺ singlet ground state, and magnetic for the Nd³⁺ Kramer's doublet. The unique polar and azimuthal angle-dependent magnetoresistance found in the Nd-nickelates can be understood to arise from the magnetic contribution of the Nd³⁺ 4f moments. Such robust and tunable superconductivity suggests potential in future high-field applications.

Thickness-Dependent Interface Polarity in Infinite-Layer Nickelate Superlattices

The interface polarity plays a vital role in the physical properties of oxide heterointerfaces because it can cause specific modifications of the electronic and atomic structure. Reconstruction due to the strong polarity of the NdNiO₂/SrTiO₃ interface in recently discovered superconducting nickelate films may play an important role, as no superconductivity has been observed in the bulk. By employing four-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy and electron energy-loss spectroscopy, we studied effects of oxygen distribution, polyhedral distortion, elemental intermixing, and dimensionality in NdNiO₂/SrTiO₃ superlattices grown on SrTiO₃ (001) substrates. Oxygen distribution maps show a gradual variation of the oxygen content in the nickelate layer. Remarkably, we demonstrate thickness-dependent interface reconstruction due to a polar discontinuity. An average cation displacement of ∼0.025 nm at interfaces in 8NdNiO₂/4SrTiO₃ superlattices is twice larger than that in 4NdNiO₂/2SrTiO₃ superlattices. Our results provide insights into the understanding of reconstructions at NdNiO₂/SrTiO₃ polar interfaces.

Optimizing Superconductivity: From Cuprates via Nickelates to Palladates

Motivated by cuprate and nickelate superconductors, we perform a comprehensive study of the superconducting instability in the single-band Hubbard model. We calculate the spectrum and superconducting transition temperature T_{c} as a function of filling and Coulomb interaction for a range of hopping parameters, using the dynamical vertex approximation. We find the sweet spot for high T_{c} to be at intermediate coupling, moderate Fermi surface warping, and low hole doping. Combining these results with first principles calculations, neither nickelates nor cuprates are close to this optimum within the single-band description. Instead, we identify some palladates, notably RbSr_{2}PdO_{3} and A_{2}^{'}PdO_{2}Cl_{2} (A^{'}=Ba_{0.5}La_{0.5}), to be virtually optimal, while others, such as NdPdO_{2}, are too weakly correlated.

Resolving the polar interface of infinite-layer nickelate thin films

Nickel-based superconductors provide a long-awaited experimental platform to explore possible cuprate-like superconductivity. Despite similar crystal structure and d electron filling, however, superconductivity in nickelates has thus far only been stabilized in thin-film geometry, raising questions about the polar interface between substrate and thin film. Here we conduct a detailed experimental and theoretical study of the prototypical interface between Nd_1-xSr_xNiO₂ and SrTiO₃. Atomic-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy in the scanning transmission electron microscope reveals the formation of a single intermediate Nd(Ti,Ni)O₃ layer. Density functional theory calculations with a Hubbard U term show how the observed structure alleviates the polar discontinuity. We explore the effects of oxygen occupancy, hole doping and cation structure to disentangle the contributions of each for reducing interface charge density. Resolving the non-trivial interface structure will be instructive for future synthesis of nickelate films on other substrates and in vertical heterostructures.

Limits to the strain engineering of layered square-planar nickelate thin films

The layered square-planar nickelates, Ndn+1NinO2n+2, are an appealing system to tune the electronic properties of square-planar nickelates via dimensionality; indeed, superconductivity was recently observed in Nd6Ni5O12 thin films. Here, we investigate the role of epitaxial strain in the competing requirements for the synthesis of the n = 3 Ruddlesden-Popper compound, Nd4Ni3O10, and subsequent reduction to the square-planar phase, Nd4Ni3O8. We synthesize our highest quality Nd4Ni3O10 films under compressive strain on LaAlO3 (001), while Nd4Ni3O10 on NdGaO3 (110) exhibits tensile strain-induced rock salt faults but retains bulk-like transport properties. A high density of extended defects forms in Nd4Ni3O10 on SrTiO3 (001). Films reduced on LaAlO3 become insulating and form compressive strain-induced c-axis canting defects, while Nd4Ni3O8 films on NdGaO3 are metallic. This work provides a pathway to the synthesis of Ndn+1NinO2n+2 thin films and sets limits on the ability to strain engineer these compounds via epitaxy.

Geometric frustration of Jahn-Teller order in the infinite-layer lattice

The Jahn-Teller effect, in which electronic configurations with energetically degenerate orbitals induce lattice distortions to lift this degeneracy, has a key role in many symmetry-lowering crystal deformations¹. Lattices of Jahn-Teller ions can induce a cooperative distortion, as exemplified by LaMnO₃ (refs. ^2,3). Although many examples occur in octahedrally⁴ or tetrahedrally⁵ coordinated transition metal oxides due to their high orbital degeneracy, this effect has yet to be manifested for square-planar anion coordination, as found in infinite-layer copper^6,7, nickel^8,9, iron^10,11 and manganese oxides¹². Here we synthesize single-crystal CaCoO₂ thin films by topotactic reduction of the brownmillerite CaCoO_2.5 phase. We observe a markedly distorted infinite-layer structure, with ångström-scale displacements of the cations from their high-symmetry positions. This can be understood to originate from the Jahn-Teller degeneracy of the d_xz and d_yz orbitals in the d⁷ electronic configuration along with substantial ligand-transition metal mixing. A complex pattern of distortions arises in a [Formula: see text] tetragonal supercell, reflecting the competition between an ordered Jahn-Teller effect on the CoO₂ sublattice and the geometric frustration of the associated displacements of the Ca sublattice, which are strongly coupled in the absence of apical oxygen. As a result of this competition, the CaCoO₂ structure forms an extended two-in-two-out type of Co distortion following 'ice rules'¹³.

Electronic structure and correlations in planar trilayer nickelate Pr4Ni3O8

The discovery of superconductivity in planar nickelates raises the question of how the electronic structure and correlations of Ni¹⁺ compounds compare to those of the Cu²⁺ cuprate superconductors. Here, we present an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) study of the trilayer nickelate Pr₄Ni₃O₈, revealing a Fermi surface resembling that of the hole-doped cuprates but with critical differences. Specifically, the main portions of the Fermi surface are extremely similar to that of the bilayer cuprates, with an additional piece that can accommodate additional hole doping. We find that the electronic correlations are about twice as strong in the nickelates and are almost k-independent, indicating that they originate from a local effect, likely the Mott interaction, whereas cuprate interactions are somewhat less local. Nevertheless, the nickelates still demonstrate the strange-metal behavior in the electron scattering rates. Understanding the similarities and differences between these two families of strongly correlated superconductors is an important challenge.

Realizing Metastable Cobaltite Perovskite via Proton-Induced Filling of Oxygen Vacancy Channels

The interaction between transition-metal oxides (TMOs) and protons has become a key issue in magneto-ionics and proton-conducting fuel cells. Until now, most investigations on oxide-proton reactions rely on electrochemical tools, while the direct interplay between protons and oxides remains basically at simple dissolution of metal oxides by an acidic solution. In this work, we find classical TMO brownmillerite SrCoO_2.5 (B-SCO) films with ordered oxygen vacancy channels experiencing an interesting transition to a metastable perovskite phase (M-SCO) in a weak acidic solution. M-SCO exhibits a strong ferromagnetism (1.01 μ_B/Co, T_c > 200 K) and a greatly elevated electrical conductivity (∼10⁴ of pristine SrCoO_2.5), which is similar to the prototypical perovskite SrCoO₃. Besides, such M-SCO tends to transform back to B-SCO in a vacuum environment or heating at a relatively low temperature. Two possible mechanisms (H₂O addition/active oxygen filling) have been proposed to explain the phenomenon, and the control experiments demonstrate that the latter mechanism is the dominant process. Our work finds a new way to realize cobaltite perovskite with enhanced magnetoelectric properties and may deepen the understanding of oxide-proton interaction in an aqueous solution.

Antiferromagnetic insulating state in layered nickelates at half filling

We provide a set of computational experiments based on ab initio calculations to elucidate whether a cuprate-like antiferromagnetic insulating state can be present in the phase diagram of the low-valence layered nickelate family (R[Formula: see text]Ni[Formula: see text]O[Formula: see text], R= rare-earth, [Formula: see text]) in proximity to half-filling. It is well established that at [Formula: see text] filling the infinite-layer ([Formula: see text]) nickelate is metallic, in contrast to cuprates wherein an antiferromagnetic insulator is expected. We show that for the Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) reduced phases of the series (finite n) an antiferromagnetic insulating ground state can naturally be obtained instead at [Formula: see text] filling, due to the spacer RO[Formula: see text] fluorite slabs present in their structure that block the c-axis dispersion. In the [Formula: see text] nickelate, the same type of solution can be derived if the off-plane R-Ni coupling is suppressed. We show how this can be achieved if a structural element that cuts off the c-axis dispersion is introduced (i.e. vacuum in a monolayer of RNiO[Formula: see text], or a blocking layer in multilayers formed by (RNiO[Formula: see text])[Formula: see text]/(RNaO[Formula: see text])[Formula: see text]).

Charge density waves in infinite-layer NdNiO2 nickelates

In materials science, much effort has been devoted to the reproduction of superconductivity in chemical compositions, analogous to cuprate superconductors since their discovery over 30 years ago. This approach was recently successful in realising superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates^1-6. Although differing from cuprates in electronic and magnetic properties, strong Coulomb interactions suggest that infinite-layer nickelates have a propensity towards various symmetry-breaking orders that populate cuprates^7-10. Here we report the observation of charge density waves (CDWs) in infinite-layer NdNiO₂ films using Ni L₃ resonant X-ray scattering. Remarkably, CDWs form in Nd 5d and Ni 3d orbitals at the same commensurate wavevector (0.333, 0) reciprocal lattice units, with non-negligible out-of-plane dependence and an in-plane correlation length of up to ~60 Å. Spectroscopic studies reveal a strong connection between CDWs and Nd 5d-Ni 3d orbital hybridization. Upon entering the superconducting state at 20% Sr doping, the CDWs disappear. Our work demonstrates the existence of CDWs in infinite-layer nickelates with a multiorbital character distinct from cuprates, which establishes their low-energy physics.

Pressure-induced monotonic enhancement of Tc to over 30 K in superconducting Pr0.82Sr0.18NiO2 thin films

The successful synthesis of superconducting infinite-layer nickelate thin films with the highest T_c ≈ 15 K has ignited great enthusiasm for this material class as potential analogs of the high-T_c cuprates. Pursuing a higher T_c is always an imperative task in studying a new superconducting material system. Here we report high-quality Pr_0.82Sr_0.18NiO₂ thin films with T_c^onset ≈ 17 K synthesized by carefully tuning the amount of CaH₂ in the topotactic chemical reduction and the effect of pressure on its superconducting properties by measuring electrical resistivity under various pressures in a cubic anvil cell apparatus. We find that the onset temperature of the superconductivity, T_c^onset, can be enhanced monotonically from ~17 K at ambient pressure to ~31 K at 12.1 GPa without showing signatures of saturation upon increasing pressure. This encouraging result indicates that the T_c of infinite-layer nickelates superconductors still has room to go higher and it can be further boosted by applying higher pressures or strain engineering in the heterostructure films.

Charge and Spin Order Dichotomy in NdNiO_{2} Driven by the Capping Layer

Superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates holds exciting analogies with that of cuprates, with similar structures and 3d-electron count. Using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering, we studied electronic and magnetic excitations and charge density correlations in Nd_{1-x}Sr_{x}NiO_{2} thin films with and without an SrTiO_{3} capping layer. We observe dispersing magnons only in the capped samples, progressively dampened at higher doping. We detect an elastic resonant scattering peak in the uncapped x=0 compound at wave vector (∼⅓,0), remindful of the charge order signal in hole doped cuprates. The peak weakens at x=0.05 and disappears in the superconducting x=0.20 film. The role of the capping on the electronic reconstruction far from the interface remains to be understood.

Fingerprints of Topotactic Hydrogen in Nickelate Superconductors

Superconductivity has entered the nickel age marked by enormous experimental and theoretical efforts. Notwithstanding, synthesizing nickelate superconductors remains extremely challenging, not least due to incomplete oxygen reduction and topotactic hydrogen. Here, we present density-functional theory calculations for nickelate superconductors with additional topotactic hydrogen or oxygen, namely La1−xSrxNiO2Hδ and LaNiO2+δ. We identify a phonon mode as a possible indication for topotactic hydrogen and discuss the charge redistribution patterns around oxygen and hydrogen impurities.

Revealing the role of interfacial heterogeneous nucleation in the metastable thin film growth of rare-earth nickelate electronic transition materials

Although rare-earth nickelates (ReNiO₃, Re ≠ La) exhibit abundant electronic phases and widely adjustable metal to insulator electronic transition properties, their practical electronic applications are largely impeded by their intrinsic meta-stability. Apart from elevating the oxygen reaction pressure, heterogeneous nucleation is expected to be an alternative strategy that enables the crystallization of ReNiO₃ at low meta-stability. In this work, the respective roles of high oxygen pressure and heterogeneous interface in triggering ReNiO₃ thin film growth in the metastable state are revealed. ReNiO₃ (Re = Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd and Dy) thin films grown on a LaAlO₃ single crystal substrate show effective crystallization at atmospheric pressure without the necessity to apply high oxygen pressure, suggesting that the interfacial bonding between the ReNiO₃ and substrates can sufficiently reduce the positive Gibbs formation energy of ReNiO₃, which is further verified by the first-principles calculations. Nevertheless, the abrupt electronic transitions only appear in ReNiO₃ thin films grown at high oxygen pressure, in which case the oxygen vacancies are effectively eliminated via high oxygen pressure reactions as indicated by near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) analysis. This work unveils the synergistic effects of heterogeneous nucleation and high oxygen pressure on the growth of high quality ReNiO₃ thin films.

Self-healing Growth of LaNiO3 on a Mixed-Terminated Perovskite Surface

Developing atomic-scale synthesis control is a prerequisite for understanding and engineering the exotic physics inherent to transition-metal oxide heterostructures. Thus, far, however, the number of materials systems explored has been extremely limited, particularly with regard to the crystalline substrate, which is routinely SrTiO₃. Here, we investigate the growth of a rare-earth nickelate─LaNiO₃─on (LaAlO₃)(Sr₂AlTaO₆) (LSAT) (001) by oxide molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). Whereas the LSAT substrates are smooth, they do not exhibit the single surface termination usually assumed necessary for control over the interface structure. Performing both nonresonant and resonant anomalous in situ synchrotron surface X-ray scattering during MBE growth, we show that reproducible heterostructures can be achieved regardless of both the mixed surface termination and the layer-by-layer deposition sequence. The rearrangement of the layers occurs dynamically during growth, resulting in the fabrication of high-quality LaNiO₃/LSAT heterostructures with a sharp and consistent interfacial structure. This is due to the thermodynamics of the deposition window as well as the nature of the chemical species at interfaces─here, the flexible charge state of nickel at the oxide surface. This has important implications regarding the use of a wider variety of substrates for fundamental studies on complex oxide synthesis.

Superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates

The recent discovery of the superconductivity in the doped infinite layer nickelatesRNiO₂(R= La, Pr, Nd) is of great interest since the nickelates are isostructural to doped (Ca, Sr)CuO₂having superconducting transition temperature (T_c) of about 110 K. Verifying the commonalities and differences between these oxides will certainly give a new insight into the mechanism of highT_csuperconductivity in correlated electron systems. In this paper, we review experimental and theoretical works on this new superconductor and discuss the future perspectives for the 'nickel age' of superconductivity.

Quantifying transfer learning synergies in infinite-layer and perovskite nitrides, oxides, and fluorides

We combine density functional theory simulations and active learning (AL) of element-embedding neural networks (NNs) to explore the sample efficiency for the prediction of vacancy layer formation energies and lattice parameters inABX_ninfinite-layer (n= 2) versus perovskite (n= 3) nitrides, oxides, and fluorides in the spirit of transfer learning. Following a comprehensive data analysis from different thermodynamic, structural, and statistical perspectives, we show that NNs model these observables with high precision, using merely∼30%of the data for training and exclusively theA-,B-, andX-site element names as minimal input devoid of any physicala prioriinformation. Element embedding autonomously arranges the chemical elements with a characteristic recurrent topology, such that their relations are consistent with human knowledge. We compare two different embedding strategies and show that these techniques render additional input such as atomic properties negligible. Simultaneously, we demonstrate that AL is largely independent of the initial training set, and exemplify its superiority over randomly composed training sets. Despite their highly distinct chemistry, the present approach successfully identifies fundamental quantum-mechanical universalities between nitrides, oxides, and fluorides that enhance the combined prediction accuracy by up to 16% with respect to three specialized NNs at equivalent numerical effort. This quantification of synergistic effects provides an impression of the transfer learning improvements one may expect for similarly complex materials. Finally, by embedding the tensor product of theBandXsites and subsequent quantitative cluster analysis, we establish from an unbiased artificial-intelligence perspective that oxides and nitrides exhibit significant parallels, whereas fluorides constitute a rather distinct materials class.

Superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelate La1-xCaxNiO2 thin films

We report the observation of superconductivity in infinite-layer Ca-doped LaNiO₂ (La_1-xCa_xNiO₂) thin films and construct their phase diagram. Unlike the metal-insulator transition in Nd- and Pr-based nickelates, the undoped and underdoped La_1-xCa_xNiO₂ thin films are entirely insulating from 300 K down to 2 K. A superconducting dome is observed at 0.15 < x < 0.3 with weakly insulating behavior at the overdoped regime. Moreover, the sign of the Hall coefficient R_H changes at low temperature for samples with a higher doping level. However, distinct from the Nd- and Pr-based nickelates, the R_H-sign-change temperature remains at around 35 K as the doping increases, which begs further theoretical and experimental investigation to reveal the role of the 4f orbital to the (multi)band nature of the superconducting nickelates. Our results also emphasize a notable role of lattice correlation on the multiband structures of the infinite-layer nickelates.

Superconductivity in a quintuple-layer square-planar nickelate

Since the discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in copper oxide materials¹, there have been sustained efforts to both understand the origins of this phase and discover new cuprate-like superconducting materials². One prime materials platform has been the rare-earth nickelates and, indeed, superconductivity was recently discovered in the doped compound Nd_0.8Sr_0.2NiO₂ (ref. ³). Undoped NdNiO₂ belongs to a series of layered square-planar nickelates with chemical formula Nd_n+1Ni_nO_2n+2 and is known as the 'infinite-layer' (n = ∞) nickelate. Here we report the synthesis of the quintuple-layer (n = 5) member of this series, Nd₆Ni₅O₁₂, in which optimal cuprate-like electron filling (d^8.8) is achieved without chemical doping. We observe a superconducting transition beginning at ~13 K. Electronic structure calculations, in tandem with magnetoresistive and spectroscopic measurements, suggest that Nd₆Ni₅O₁₂ interpolates between cuprate-like and infinite-layer nickelate-like behaviour. In engineering a distinct superconducting nickelate, we identify the square-planar nickelates as a new family of superconductors that can be tuned via both doping and dimensionality.
