Evolution from Lead-Based to Lead-Free Piezoelectrics: Engineering of Lattices, Domains, Boundaries, and Defects Leading to Giant Response

Advanced Materials for Energy Harvesting and Soft Robotics: Emerging Frontiers to Enhance Piezoelectric Performance and Functionality

Piezoelectric energy harvesting captures mechanical energy from a number of sources, such as vibrations, the movement of objects and bodies, impact events, and fluid flow to generate electric power. Such power can be employed to support wireless communication, electronic components, ocean monitoring, tissue engineering, and biomedical devices. A variety of self-powered piezoelectric sensors, transducers, and actuators have been produced for these applications, however approaches to enhance the piezoelectric properties of materials to increase device performance remain a challenging frontier of materials research. In this regard, the intrinsic polarization and properties of materials can be designed or deliberately engineered to enhance the piezo-generated power. This review provides insights into the mechanisms of piezoelectricity in advanced materials, including perovskites, active polymers, and natural biomaterials, with a focus on the chemical and physical strategies employed to enhance the piezo-response and facilitate their integration into complex electronic systems. Applications in energy harvesting and soft robotics are overviewed by highlighting the primary performance figures of merits, the actuation mechanisms, and relevant applications. Key breakthroughs and valuable strategies to further improve both materials and device performance are discussed, together with a critical assessment of the requirements of next-generation piezoelectric systems, and future scientific and technological solutions.

Monitoring soil fauna with ecoacoustics

Ecoacoustics-or acoustic ecology-aids in monitoring elusive and protected species in several ecological contexts. For example, passive acoustic monitoring (PAM), which involves autonomous acoustic sensors, is widely used to detect various taxonomic groups in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, from birds and bats to fish and cetaceans. Here, we illustrate the potential of ecoacoustics to monitor soil biodiversity (specifically fauna)-a crucial endeavour given that 59% of species live in soil yet 75% of soils are affected by degradation. We describe the sources of sound in the soil (e.g. biological, geological and anthropogenic) and the ability of acoustic technology to detect and differentiate between these sounds, highlighting opportunities and current gaps in knowledge. We also propose a roadmap for the future development of optimized hardware, analytical pipelines and experimental approaches. Soil ecoacoustics is an emerging field with considerable potential to improve soil biodiversity monitoring and 'soil health' diagnostics. Indeed, early studies suggest soil ecoacoustics can be successfully applied in various ecosystems (e.g. grasslands, temperate, tropical and arid forests) and land uses (e.g. agriculture, viticulture, natural and restored ecosystems). Given the low cost, minimal intrusiveness, and effectiveness in supporting soil biodiversity assessments and biosecurity risks, we advocate for the advancement of soil ecoacoustics for future land management applications.

Well-balanced performance achieved in PZT piezoceramics via a multiscale regulation strategy

Emerging high-power piezoelectric applications demand the development of piezoelectric materials featuring both a high mechanical quality factor (Qm) and a large piezoelectric coefficient (d33). However, it is widely accepted that an increase in d33 is usually accompanied with a decrease in Qm, and vice versa. Herein, a multiscale regulation strategy is proposed to improve Qm and d33 simultaneously from the perspectives of phase structure, ferroelectric domains, and lattice defects. A well-balanced combination of electromechanical performances with Qm = 726, d33 = 502 pC N-1, kp = 0.69, tan δ = 0.0024, and TC = 267 °C was obtained. Through structural characterization, it was observed that the morphotropic phase boundary and enhanced dispersion behavior lead to a lowered energy barrier, which contributes to polarization rotation and enhances piezoelectric performance. At the same time, the excellent piezoelectric performances also benefit from the highly oriented domain structure and small domain size after high-temperature poling. Furthermore, the segregation of Ba2+ causes A-site defects in the crystal lattice, accompanied with an increase in oxygen vacancies, which maintains the hardening effect of the ceramics. This study proposes a multiscale regulation strategy, providing insights for the design of high-power piezoelectric ceramics with high d33 and Qm.

Ferroelectric Order Evolution in Freestanding PbTiO3 Films Monitored by Optical Second Harmonic Generation

The demand for low-dimensional ferroelectric devices is steadily increasing, however, the thick substrates in epitaxial films impede further size miniaturization. Freestanding films offer a potential solution by eliminating substrate constraints. Nevertheless, it remains an ongoing challenge to improve the stability in thin and fragile freestanding films under strain and temperature. In this work, the structure and ferroelectric order of freestanding PbTiO3 (PTO) films are investigated under continuous variation of the strain and temperature using nondestructive optical second harmonic generation (SHG) technique. The findings reveal that there are both out-of-plane and in-plane domains with polarization along out-of-plane and in-plane directions in the orthorhombic-like freestanding PTO films, respectively. In contrast, only out-of-plane domains are observed in the tetragonal epitaxial PTO films. Remarkably, the ferroelectricity of freestanding PTO films is strengthened under small uniaxial tensile strain from 0% up to 1.66% and well-maintained under larger biaxial tensile strain up to 2.76% along the [100] direction and up to 4.46% along the [010] direction. Moreover, a high Curie temperature of 630 K is identified in 50 nm thick freestanding PTO films by wide-temperature-range SHG. These findings provide valuable understanding for the development of the next-generation electronic nanodevices with flexibility and thermostability.

Piezoelectric Biomaterials Inspired by Nature for Applications in Biomedicine and Nanotechnology

Bioelectricity provides electrostimulation to regulate cell/tissue behaviors and functions. In the human body, bioelectricity can be generated in electromechanically responsive tissues and organs, as well as biomolecular building blocks that exhibit piezoelectricity, with a phenomenon known as the piezoelectric effect. Inspired by natural bio-piezoelectric phenomenon, efforts have been devoted to exploiting high-performance synthetic piezoelectric biomaterials, including molecular materials, polymeric materials, ceramic materials, and composite materials. Notably, piezoelectric biomaterials polarize under mechanical strain and generate electrical potentials, which can be used to fabricate electronic devices. Herein, a review article is proposed to summarize the design and research progress of piezoelectric biomaterials and devices toward bionanotechnology. First, the functions of bioelectricity in regulating human electrophysiological activity from cellular to tissue level are introduced. Next, recent advances as well as structure-property relationship of various natural and synthetic piezoelectric biomaterials are provided in detail. In the following part, the applications of piezoelectric biomaterials in tissue engineering, drug delivery, biosensing, energy harvesting, and catalysis are systematically classified and discussed. Finally, the challenges and future prospects of piezoelectric biomaterials are presented. It is believed that this review will provide inspiration for the design and development of innovative piezoelectric biomaterials in the fields of biomedicine and nanotechnology.

Novel Sol-Gel Synthesis Route for Ce- and V-Doped Ba0.85Ca0.15Ti0.9Zr0.1O3 Piezoceramics

To meet the current demand for lead-free piezoelectric ceramics, a novel sol-gel synthesis route is presented for the preparation of Ba0.85Ca0.15Ti0.9Zr0.1O3 doped with cerium (Ce = 0, 0.01, and 0.02 mol%) and vanadium (V = 0, 0.3, and 0.4 mol%). X-ray diffraction patterns reveal the formation of a perovskite phase (space group P4mm) for all samples after calcination at 800 °C and sintering at 1250, 1350, and 1450 °C, where it is proposed that both dopants occupy the B site. Sintering studies show that V doping allows the sintering temperature to be reduced to at least 1250 °C. Undoped BCZT samples sintered at the same temperature show reduced functional properties compared to V-doped samples, i.e., d33 values increase by an order of magnitude with doping. The dissipation factor tan δ decreases with increasing sintering temperature for all doping concentrations, while the Curie temperature TC increases for all V-doped samples, reaching 120 °C for high-concentration co-doped samples. All results indicate that vanadium doping can facilitate the processing of BCZT at lower sintering temperatures without compromising performance while promoting thermal property stability.

Doping-Induced piezoelectricity in Ba2Nb2-xFexO6-δ double perovskite oxides for efficient hydrogen peroxide production via piezocatalysis in pure water

Piezocatalysis has emerged as a sustainable alternative for hydrogen peroxide production. However, the current development of efficient piezocatalysts is predominantly focusing on those conventional piezoelectric ceramic oxides with high permittivity and limited catalytic activities. Therefore, innovative approaches to develop novel piezocatalysts in particular from these outstanding paraelectric semiconductors are highly required. In this work, by employing a feasible doping strategy, robust piezoelectric property is created on the Ba2Nb2-xFexO6-δ double perovskite oxides, typically characterized by a stable paraelectric cubic structure. Optimum Fe doping not only intensifies the double perovskite phase but also inspires a phase transition from a centrosymmetric cubic to a piezoelectric tetragonal phase, thereby achieving desirable piezoelectricity and enabling a series of favorable physical properties including redox activity, active sites of anion defects, reduced bandgap, and increased free charge density. All these are important factors to enhance piezocatalytic activity. As a result, Ba2NbFeO6-δ achieved by the optimum Fe doping demonstrated exceptional piezocatalytic H2O2 yield of 512 and 690 µmol g-1 h-1 under atmosphere and oxygen-purging conditions, respectively, without the presence of any sacrificial agents. Mechanistic investigations reveal that both water oxidation and oxygen reduction involve in the H2O2 production, wherein piezopotential plays a critical role not only in facilitating the charge carrier separation and transportation but also in modulating the band structure to enhance the catalyst redox capacity. This study offers a feasible and universal strategy for the design of novel piezocatalysts, expanding the windows for catalyst selection for piezocatalysis.

Unconventional Polarization Response in Titanite-Type Oxides due to Hashed Antiferroelectric Domains

Domains in a crystal, which have crystallographic uniformity and are geometrically segmented, typically arise from various phase transitions. The physical properties within individual domains are inherently the same as those in the homogeneous bulk. As a result, sufficiently large domains have little influence on the bulk properties. However, as the domains decrease in size to the nanoscale, for instance, due to multiple phase instabilities or spatial inhomogeneities, then the materials often acquire exceptional functionalities that are unattainable without these domains. This effect is exemplified by the ultrahigh dielectric and piezoelectric responses observed in ferroelectric oxides with nanoscale polar domains as well as in ferroelectric relaxors with polar nanoclusters. Here, we demonstrate that hashed nanoscale domains in an antiferroelectric material are also capable of boosting dielectric permittivity in an unconventional way. This discovery has been made in an antiferroelectric titanite-type oxide, CaTi(Si1-xGex)O5, in which the permittivity significantly increases when the antiferroelectric order becomes short-range. Our transmission electron microscopy observations have clarified that polar regions simultaneously appear around antiphase boundaries in the antiferroelectric phase of CaTi(Si1-xGex)O5. As the concentration of the antiphase boundary increases, the polar regions become denser and play a crucial role in boosting the permittivity. At the composition of x = 0.5, the value of the permittivity finally reaches double that in the bulk and shows excellent linearity, at least until an electric field of 500 kV/cm is applied. The present findings highlight the promise of domain engineering for boosting the permittivity in antiferroelectrics as a way to develop materials with excellent dielectric properties.

Ultra-large electromechanical deformation in lead-free piezoceramics at reduced thickness

Lead-free piezoceramics with large controllable deformations are highly desirable for numerous energy converter applications ranging from consumer electronics to medical microrobots. Although several new classes of high-performance ferroelectrics have been discovered, a universal strategy to enable various piezoceramics to realize large electromechanical deformations is still lacking. Herein, by gradually reducing the thickness from 0.5 mm to 0.1 mm, we discover that a large nominal electrostrain of ∼11.49% can be achieved in thin 0.937(Bi0.5Na0.5)TiO3-0.063BaTiO3 (BNT-BT) ceramics with highly asymmetric strain-electric field curves. Further analyses of the polarization switching process reveal that the boosted strain curves originate from the bending deformation driven by asymmetric ferroelastic switching in the surface layers. Based on this, one monolayer BNT-BT was designed to realize digital displacement actuation and a scanning mirror application with a maximum mirror deflection angle of 44.38°. Moreover, the surface effect-induced bending deformation can be extended to other piezoceramics, accompanied by derived shape retention effects. These discoveries raise the possibility of utilizing thickness engineering to design large-displacement actuators and may accelerate the development of high-performance lead-free piezoceramics.

Modulation of the morphotropic phase boundary for high-performance ductile thermoelectric materials

The flexible thermoelectric technique, which can convert heat from the human body to electricity via the Seebeck effect, is expected to provide a peerless solution for the power supply of wearables. The recent discovery of ductile semiconductors has opened a new avenue for flexible thermoelectric technology, but their power factor and figure-of-merit values are still much lower than those of classic thermoelectric materials. Herein, we demonstrate the presence of morphotropic phase boundary in Ag2Se-Ag2S pseudobinary compounds. The morphotropic phase boundary can be freely tuned by adjusting the material thermal treatment processes. High-performance ductile thermoelectric materials with excellent power factor (22 μWcm-1 K-2) and figure-of-merit (0.61) values are realized near the morphotropic phase boundary at 300 K. These materials perform better than all existing ductile inorganic semiconductors and organic materials. Furthermore, the in-plane flexible thermoelectric device based on these high-performance thermoelectric materials demonstrates a normalized maximum power density reaching 0.26 Wm-1 under a temperature gradient of 20 K, which is at least two orders of magnitude higher than those of flexible organic thermoelectric devices. This work can greatly accelerate the development of flexible thermoelectric technology.

Large Electromechanical Response in a Polycrystalline Alkali-Deficient (K,Na)NbO3 Thin Film on Silicon

The demand for large electromechanical performance in lead-free polycrystalline piezoelectric thin films is driven by the need for compact, high-performance microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) based devices operating at low voltages. Here we significantly enhance the electromechanical response in a polycrystalline lead-free oxide thin film by utilizing lattice-defect-induced structural inhomogeneities. Unlike prior observations in mismatched epitaxial films with limited low-frequency enhancements, we achieve large electromechanical strain in a polycrystalline (K,Na)NbO3 film integrated on silicon. This is achieved by inducing self-assembled Nb-rich planar faults with a nonstoichiometric composition. The film exhibits an effective piezoelectric coefficient of 565 pm V-1 at 1 kHz, surpassing those of lead-based counterparts. Notably, lattice defect growth is substrate-independent, and the large electromechanical response is extended to even higher frequencies in a polycrystalline film. Improved properties arise from unique lattice defect morphology and frequency-dependent relaxation behavior, offering a new route to remarkable electromechanical response in polycrystalline thin films.

Chiral Two-Dimensional Hybrid Organic-Inorganic Perovskites for Piezoelectric Ultrasound Detection

Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) have exhibited striking application potential in piezoelectric energy harvesting and sensing due to their high piezoelectricity, light weight, and solution processability. However, to date, the application of piezoelectric HOIPs in ultrasound detection has not yet been explored. Here, we report the synthesis of a pair of chiral two-dimensional piezoelectric HOIPs, R-(4-bromo-2-butylammonium)2PbBr4 and S-(4-bromo-2-butylammonium)2PbBr4 [R-(BrBA)2PbBr4 and S-(BrBA)2PbBr4], which show low mechanical strength and significant piezoelectric strain coefficients that are advantageous for mechanoelectrical energy conversion. Benefiting from these virtues, the R-(BrBA)2PbBr4@PBAT and S-(BrBA)2PbBr4@PBAT [PBAT = poly(butyleneadipate-co-terephthalate)] composite films show prominent underwater ultrasound detection performance with a transmission effectivity of 12.0% using a 10.0 MHz probe, comparable with that of a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) device fabricated in the same conditions. Density functional theory calculations reveal that R-(BrBA)2PbBr4 and S-(BrBA)2PbBr4 have a beneficial acoustic impedance (5.07-6.76 MRayl) compatible with that of water (1.5 MRayl), which is responsible for the facile ultrasound-induced electricity generation. These encouraging results open up new possibilities for applying piezoelectric HOIPs in underwater ultrasound detection and imaging technologies.

Enhancing Electromechanical Properties of PZT-Based Piezoelectric Ceramics by High-Temperature Poling for High-Power Applications

Defect engineering is a proven method to tune the properties of perovskite oxides. In demanding high-power piezoelectric ceramic applications, acceptor doping is the most effective method to harden ceramics, but it inevitably degrades the ceramics' electromechanical properties. Herein, a poling method based on acceptor doping, namely, high-temperature poling, is implemented by applying an electric field above the Curie temperature for poling to achieve a balance of the properties of piezoelectric coefficient d₃₃ and mechanical quality factor Q_m. After high-temperature poling, the piezoelectric property of 0.6 mol % Mn-doped Pb_0.92Sr_0.08(Zr_0.533Ti_0.443Nb_0.024)O₃ is d₃₃ = 483 pC/N and Q_m = 448. Compared with the traditional poling, the piezoelectric coefficient d₃₃ of the high-temperature poling ceramics increased by approximately 40%, and Q_m also increased by nearly 18%. Therefore, high d₃₃ and Q_m were exhibited by our PZT piezoelectric ceramics. Rayleigh's law analysis, XRD, and transmission electron microscopy analysis show that, after high-temperature poling, the considerably increased d₃₃ is related to the large increase in the reversible domain wall motion in the intrinsic effect, while the slightly increased Q_m is related to the inhibited irreversible domain wall motion in the extrinsic effect. This study reports a method for high-temperature poling and provides insights into the design of high-power piezoelectric ceramics with high d₃₃ and Q_m.

Multi-Parametric Exploration of a Selection of Piezoceramic Materials for Bone Graft Substitute Applications

This work was devoted to the first multi-parametric unitary comparative analysis of a selection of sintered piezoceramic materials synthesised by solid-state reactions, aiming to delineate the most promising biocompatible piezoelectric material, to be further implemented into macro-porous ceramic scaffolds fabricated by 3D printing technologies. The piezoceramics under scrutiny were: KNbO₃, LiNbO₃, LiTaO₃, BaTiO₃, Zr-doped BaTiO₃, and the (Ba_0.85Ca_0.15)(Ti_0.9Zr_0.1)O₃ solid solution (BCTZ). The XRD analysis revealed the high crystallinity of all sintered ceramics, while the best densification was achieved for the BaTiO₃-based materials via conventional sintering. Conjunctively, BCTZ yielded the best combination of functional properties-piezoelectric response (in terms of longitudinal piezoelectric constant and planar electromechanical coupling factor) and mechanical and in vitro osteoblast cell compatibility. The selected piezoceramic was further used as a base material for the robocasting fabrication of 3D macro-porous scaffolds (porosity of ~50%), which yielded a promising compressive strength of ~20 MPa (higher than that of trabecular bone), excellent cell colonization capability, and noteworthy cytocompatibility in osteoblast cell cultures, analogous to the biological control. Thereby, good prospects for the possible development of a new generation of synthetic bone graft substitutes endowed with the piezoelectric effect as a stimulus for the enhancement of osteogenic capacity were settled.

Diverse Defects in Alkali Niobate Thin Films: Understanding at Atomic Scales and Their Implications on Properties

Defects in ferroelectric materials have many implications on the material properties which, in most cases, are detrimental. However, engineering these defects can also create opportunities for property enhancement as well as for tailoring novel functionalities. To purposely manipulate these defects, a thorough knowledge of their spatial atomic arrangement, as well as elastic and electrostatic interactions with the surrounding lattice, is highly crucial. In this work, analytical scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) is used to reveal a diverse range of multidimensional crystalline defects (point, line, planar, and secondary phase) in (K,Na)NbO₃ (KNN) ferroelectric thin films. The atomic-scale analyses of the defect-lattice interactions suggest strong elastic and electrostatic couplings which vary among the individual defects and correspondingly affect the electric polarization. In particular, the observed polarization orientations are correlated with lattice relaxations as well as strain gradients and can strongly impact the properties of the ferroelectric films. The knowledge and understanding obtained in this study open a new avenue for the improvement of properties as well as the discovery of defect-based functionalities in alkali niobate thin films.

Giant electric field-induced strain in lead-free piezoceramics

Piezoelectric actuators are indispensable over a wide range of industries for their fast response and precise displacement. Most commercial piezoelectric actuators contain lead, posing environmental challenges. We show that a giant strain (1.05%) and a large-signal piezoelectric strain coefficient (2100 picometer/volt) are achieved in strontium (Sr)-doped (K,Na)NbO₃ lead-free piezoceramics, being synthesized by the conventional solid-state reaction method without any post treatment. The underlying mechanism responsible for the ultrahigh electrostrain is the interaction between defect dipoles and domain switching. The fatigue resistance, thermal stability, and strain value (0.25%) at 20 kilovolt/centimeter are comparable with or better than those of commercial Pb(Zr,Ti)O₃-based ceramics, showing great potential for practical applications. This material may provide a lead-free alternative with a simple composition for piezoelectric actuators and a paradigm for the design of high-performance piezoelectrics.

Molten-Salt Processed Potassium Sodium Niobate Single-Crystal Microcuboids with Dislocation-Induced Nanodomain Structures and Relaxor Ferroelectric Behavior

We herein report a facile molten-salt synthetic strategy to prepare transparent and uniform Li, Ba-doped (K,Na)NbO₃ (KNN) single-crystal microcuboids (∼80 μm). By controlling the degree of supersaturation, different growth modes were found and the single-crystal microcuboids were synthesized via island-like oriented attachment of KNN particles onto the growing surface. The distinct relaxor ferroelectric (RFE) properties were achieved in the single-crystal microcuboids, which were different from the normal ferroelectric (FE) properties found in their KNN ceramic counterparts prepared through a solid-state reaction using the same initial precursors. The RFE properties were realized by dislocation-induced nanodomain formation during oriented attachment growth of single-crystal microcuboids, which is different from the current strategies to derive the nanodomains by the local compositional inhomogeneity or the application of an electric field. The dislocations served as nucleation sites for ferroelectric domain walls and block the growth of domains. The KNN single-crystal microcuboids exhibited a higher effective piezoelectric coefficient (∼459 pm/V) compared to that of the bulk KNN ceramic counterpart (∼90 pm/V) and showed the broad diffuse maxima in the temperature dependence dielectric permittivity. The high maximum polarization (69.6 μC/cm²) at a relatively low electric field (30 kV/cm) was beneficial for energy storage applications. Furthermore, the KNN-based transparent, flexible pressure sensor directly monitored the mechanical motion of human activity without any external electric power. This study provides insights and synthetic strategies of single-crystal RFE microcuboids for other different perovskites, in which nanodomain structures are primarily imposed by their chemical composition.

Isolated-Oxygen-Vacancy Hardening in Lead-Free Piezoelectrics

Defect engineering is a well-established approach to customize the functionalities of perovskite oxides. In demanding high-power applications of piezoelectric materials, acceptor doping serves as the state-of-the-art hardening approach, but inevitably deteriorates the electromechanical properties. Here, a new hardening effect associated with isolated oxygen vacancies for achieving well-balanced performances is proposed. Guided by theoretical design, a well-balanced performance of mechanical quality factor (Q_m ) and piezoelectric coefficient (d₃₃ ) is achieved in lead-free potassium sodium niobate ceramics, where Q_m increases by over 60% while d₃₃ remains almost unchanged. By atomic-scale Z-contrast imaging, hysteresis measurement, and quantitative piezoresponse force microscopy analysis, it is revealed that the improved Q_m results from the inhibition of both extrinsic and intrinsic losses while the unchanged d₃₃ is associated with the polarization contributions being retained. More encouragingly, the hardening effect shows exceptional stability with increasing vibration velocity, offering potential in material design for practical high-power applications such as pharmaceutical extraction and ultrasonic osteotomes.

Dehydration-activated structural phase transition in a two-dimensional hybrid double perovskite

As a feasible lead-free scheme, organic-inorganic hybrid double perovskites show many excellent properties, including ferroelectricity, ferroelasticity, self-powered circularly polarized light detection and so on. In this work, the solid-to-solid structural phase transition of a two-dimensional hybrid double perovskite (CHA)₄CuBiI₈ was successfully activated via the dehydration of (CHA)₄CuBiI₈·H₂O, which was proven by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and temperature-dependent dielectric measurements. Using variable-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffractometry, the cause behind the phase transition of (CHA)₄CuBiI₈ was determined to be the overall coordination of distortion and movement of the inorganic skeleton and thermal deformation of the cationic structure. In addition, the substance after dehydration shows good stability in multiple reversible switching during dielectric tests. The interesting dehydration-activated results of the material contribute towards a further expansion of the properties and potential application of hybrid double perovskites.

Seeing Structural Mechanisms of Optimized Piezoelectric and Thermoelectric Bulk Materials through Structural Defect Engineering

Aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (AC-STEM) has evolved into the most powerful characterization and manufacturing platform for all materials, especially functional materials with complex structural characteristics that respond dynamically to external fields. It has become possible to directly observe and tune all kinds of defects, including those at the crucial atomic scale. In-depth understanding and technically tailoring structural defects will be of great significance for revealing the structure-performance relation of existing high-property materials, as well as for foreseeing paths to the design of high-performance materials. Insights would be gained from piezoelectrics and thermoelectrics, two representative functional materials. A general strategy is highlighted for optimizing these functional materials’ properties, namely defect engineering at the atomic scale.
