2D FeP Nanoframe Superlattices via Space-Confined Topochemical Transformation

Carbon encapsulated nanoparticles: materials science and energy applications

The technological implementation of electrochemical energy conversion and storage necessitates the acquisition of high-performance electrocatalysts and electrodes. Carbon encapsulated nanoparticles have emerged as an exciting option owing to their unique advantages that strike a high-level activity-stability balance. Ever-growing attention to this unique type of material is partly attributed to the straightforward rationale of carbonizing ubiquitous organic species under energetic conditions. In addition, on-demand precursors pave the way for not only introducing dopants and surface functional groups into the carbon shell but also generating diverse metal-based nanoparticle cores. By controlling the synthetic parameters, both the carbon shell and the metallic core are facilely engineered in terms of structure, composition, and dimensions. Apart from multiple easy-to-understand superiorities, such as improved agglomeration, corrosion, oxidation, and pulverization resistance and charge conduction, afforded by the carbon encapsulation, potential core-shell synergistic interactions lead to the fine-tuning of the electronic structures of both components. These features collectively contribute to the emerging energy applications of these nanostructures as novel electrocatalysts and electrodes. Thus, a systematic and comprehensive review is urgently needed to summarize recent advancements and stimulate further efforts in this rapidly evolving research field.

Sulfate salt assistant fabrication of Fe-doped Ni2P modified with SO42-/carbon as highly efficient oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalyst

The incorporation of oxyanion groups offers a greater potential for enhancing the activity of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts compared to traditional metal cations doping, owing to their unique configurations and high electronegativity. However, the incorporation of oxyanion groups that differ from those derived from the oxidation of anions in transition metal monoxides poses significant challenges, thereby limiting further applications of oxyanion group modification approach. Herein, we present a novel sulfate salt assistant approach to fabricate Fe-doped Ni2P modified with SO42-/carbon (Fe-Ni2P-S/C) nanofibers as highly efficient OER electrocatalyst. The optimized Fe-Ni2P-S/C nanofibers display superb OER activity, requiring low overpotentials of 266, 323, and 357 mV at 100, 500, and 1000 mA cm-2, respectively. Theoretical calculations reveal that the co-adsorption of PO43- and SO42- on the surface of reconstructed electrocatalyst can reduce the energy barrier of rate-determining step, thereby resulting in enhanced OER activity. The present study emphasizes the crucial role played by anion groups in OER activity as well as proposes a novel approach for incorporating anion groups into electrocatalysts.

Symmetry-controllable assembly of Au nanooctahedron superlattice membranes for SERS

We present a novel approach to adjust the symmetry of Au octahedral nanocrystals in two-dimensional superlattices. By modifying the content of free polymeric ligands added in the nanocrystal solution, we achieve Au nanocrystal superlattices with tip-on-tip arrangements that significantly enhance the surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy performance.

Encasing Few-Layer MoS2 within 2D Ordered Cubic Graphitic Cages to Smooth Trapping-Conversion of Lithium Polysulfides for Dendrite-Free Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

The industrialization of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries faces challenges due to the shuttling effect of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) and the growth of lithium dendrites. To address these issues, a simple and scalable method is proposed to synthesize 2D membranes comprising a single layer of cubic graphitic cages encased with few-layer, curved MoS2. The distinctive 2D architecture is achieved by confining the epitaxial growth of MoS2 within the open cages of a 2D-ordered mesoporous graphitic framework (MGF), resulting in MoS2@MGF heterostructures with abundant sulfur vacancies. The experimental and theoretical studies establish that these MoS2@MGF membranes can act as a multifunctional interlayer in Li-S batteries to boost their comprehensive performance. The inclusion of the MoS2@MGF interlayer facilitates the trapping and conversion kinetics of LiPSs, preventing their shuttling effect, while simultaneously promoting uniform lithium deposition to inhibit dendrite growth. As a result, Li-S batteries with the MoS2@MGF interlayer exhibit high electrochemical performance even under high sulfur loading and lean electrolyte conditions. This work highlights the potential of designing advanced MoS2-encased heterostructures as interlayers, offering a viable solution to the current limitations plaguing Li-S batteries.

Achieving high-capacity and durable sodium storage by constructing a binder-free nanotube array architecture of iron phosphide/carbon

The conversion-type anode material of iron phosphide (FeP) promises enormous prospects for Na-ion battery technology due to its high theoretical capacity and cost-effectiveness. However, the poor reaction kinetics and large volume expansion of FeP significantly degrade the sodium storage, which remains a daunting challenge. Herein, we demonstrate a binder-free nanotube array architecture constructed by FeP@C hybrid on carbon cloth as advanced anodes to achieve fast and stable sodium storage. The nanotubular structure functions in multiple roles of providing short electron/ion transport distances, smooth electrolyte diffusion channels, and abundant active sites. The carbon layer could not only pave high-speed pathways for electron conductance but also cushion the volume change of FeP. Benefiting from these structural virtues, the FeP@C anode receives a high reversible capacity of 881.7 mAh/g at 0.1 A/g, along with a high initial Coulombic efficiency of 90% and excellent rate capability and cyclability in half and full cells. Moreover, the sodium energy reaction kinetics and mechanism of FeP@C are systematically studied. The present work offers a rational design and construction of high-capacity anode materials for high-energy-density Na-ion batteries.

Macroscopic Superlattice Membranes Self-Assembled from Gold Nanobipyramids with Precisely Tunable Tip Arrangements for SERS

A persistent challenge in utilizing Au nanocrystals for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) lies in achieving controllable superstructures that maximize SERS performance. Here, a novel strategy is proposed to enhance the SERS performance by precisely adjusting the tip arrangements of Au nanobipyramids (BPs) in two-dimensional (2D) superlattices (SLs). This is achieved through ligand-exchange of Au BPs, followed by liquid-air interfacial assembly, resulting in large-area, transferrable SL membranes. The key to controlling the arrangement of Au BPs in the SLs is the regulation of the amount of free ligands added during self-assembly, which allows for the precise formation of various configurations such as tilted SLs, tip-on-tip SLs, and tip-to-tip SLs. Among these configurations, tip-on-tip SLs exhibit the highest enhancement factor for SERS, reaching an impressive value of 1.95×108, with uniform and consistent SERS signals across a large area. The experimental findings are further corroborated by simulations using the finite element method. This study establishes an efficient method for engineering the microstructure of 2D SLs composed of Au BPs, highlighting the importance of fine-tuning the tip arrangements of Au BPs to regulate SERS performance.

Boosting Efficient and Sustainable Alkaline Water Oxidation on a W-CoOOH-TT Pair-Sites Catalyst Synthesized via Topochemical Transformation

The development of facile methods for constructing highly active, cost-effective catalysts that meet ampere-level current density and durability requirements for an oxygen evolution reaction is crucial. Herein, a general topochemical transformation strategy is posited: M-Co9S8 single-atom catalysts (SACs) are directly converted into M-CoOOH-TT (M = W, Mo, Mn, V) pair-sites catalysts under the role of incorporating of atomically dispersed high-valence metals modulators through potential cycling. Furthermore, in situ X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy is used to track the dynamic topochemical transformation process at the atomic level. The W-Co9S8 breaks through the low overpotential of 160 mV at 10 mA cm-2. A series of pair-site catalysts exhibit a large current density of approaching 1760 mA cm-2 at 1.68 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) in alkaline water oxidation and achieve a ≈240-fold enhancement in the normalized intrinsic activity compare to that reported CoOOH, and sustainable stability of 1000 h. Moreover, the O─O bond formation is confirmed via a two-site mechanism, supported by in situ synchrotron radiation infrared and density functional theory (DFT) simulations, which breaks the limit of adsorption-energy scaling relationship on conventional single-site.

A multiple Kirkendall strategy for converting nanosized zero-valent iron to highly active Fenton-like catalyst for organics degradation

Nanosized zero-valent iron (nZVI) is a promising persulfate (PS) activator, however, its structurally dense oxide shell seriously inhibited electrons transfer for O-O bond cleavage of PS. Herein, we introduced sulfidation and phosphorus-doped biochar for breaking the pristine oxide shell with formation of FeS and FePO4-containing mixed shell. In this case, the faster diffusion rate of iron atoms compared to shell components triggered multiple Kirkendall effects, causing inward fluxion of vacancies with further coalescing into radial nanocracks. Exemplified by trichloroethylene (TCE) removal, such a unique "lemon-slice-like" nanocrack structure favored fast outward transfer of electrons and ferrous ions across the mixed shell to PS activation for high-efficient generation and utilization of reactive species, as evidenced by effective dechlorination (90.6%) and mineralization (85.4%) of TCE. [Formula: see text] contributed most to TCE decomposition, moreover, the SnZVI@PBC gradually became electron-deficient and thus extracted electrons from TCE with achieving nonradical-based degradation. Compared to nZVI/PS process, the SnZVI@PBC/PS system could significantly reduce catalyst dosage (87.5%) and PS amount (68.8%) to achieve nearly complete TCE degradation, and was anti-interference, stable, and pH-universal. This study advanced mechanistic understandings of multiple Kirkendall effects-triggered nanocrack formation on nZVI with corresponding rational design of Fenton-like catalysts for organics degradation.

Monolayer supertubes of Carbon-Armored platinum nanocrystals enabling robust oxygen reduction electrocatalysis

Self-assembled superstructures composed of nanocrystals (NCs) have shown immense potential for enhancing the performance in electrocatalytic applications. However, there has been limited research on the self-assembly of platinum (Pt) into low-dimensional superstructures as efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). In this study, we designed a unique tubular superstructure composed of monolayer or sub-monolayer carbon-armored platinum nanocrystals (Pt NCs) using a template-assisted epitaxial assembly approach. The organic ligands on the surface of Pt NCs were in situ carbonized, resulting in few-layer graphitic carbon shells that encapsulate Pt NCs. Due to their monolayer assembly and tubular geometry, the Pt utilization of the supertubes was 1.5 times higher than that of conventional carbon-supported Pt NCs. As a result, such Pt supertubes exhibit remarkable electrocatalytic performance for the ORR in acidic media, with a high half-wave potential of 0.918 V and a high mass activity of 181 A g^-1_Pt at 0.9 V, which are comparable to commercial carbon-supported Pt (Pt/C) catalysts. Furthermore, the Pt supertubes demonstrate robust catalytic stability, as confirmed by long-term accelerated durability tests and identical-location transmission electron microscopy. This study presents a new approach to designing Pt superstructures for highly efficient and stable electrocatalysis.

Heterogeneous Fenton water purification catalyzed by iron phosphide (FeP)

Heterogeneous Fenton reaction has a great application potential in water purification, but efficient catalysts are still lacking. Iron phosphide (FeP) has a higher activity than the conventional Fe-based catalysts for Fenton reactions, but its ability as a Fenton catalyst to directly activate H₂O₂ remains unreported. Herein, we demonstrate that the fabricated FeP has a lower electron transfer resistance than the typical conventional Fe-based catalysts, i.e., Fe₂O₃, Fe₃O₄, and FeOOH, and thus could active H₂O₂ to produce hydroxyl radicals more efficiently. In the heterogeneous Fenton reactions for sodium benzoate degradation, the FeP catalyst presents a superior activity with a reaction rate constant more than 20 times those of the other catalysts (i.e., Fe₂O₃, Fe₃O₄, and FeOOH). Moreover, it also exhibits a great catalytic activity in the treatment of real water samples and has a good stability in the cycling tests. Furthermore, the FeP could be loaded onto a centimeter-sized porous carbon support and the prepared macro-sized catalyst exhibits an excellent water treatment performance and can be well recycled. This work reveals a great potential of FeP as a catalyst for heterogeneous Fenton reactions and may inspire further development and practical application of highly efficient catalysts for water purification.

Prussian-blue-analogue derived FeNi2S4/NiS nanoframes supported by N-doped graphene for highly efficient methanol oxidation electrocatalysis

The design of effective and robust non-noble metal electrocatalysts to enhance catalytic reaction kinetic is critical to promote methanol oxidation catalysis. Herein, hierarchical Prussian blue analogue (PBA)-derived sulfide heterostructures supported by N-doped graphene (FeNi₂S₄/NiS-NG) as efficient catalysts have been developed for methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). Benefiting from the merits of hollow nanoframes structure and heterogeneous sulfide synergy, FeNi₂S₄/NiS-NG composite not only possesses abundant active sites to boost the catalytic properties but also alleviates the CO poisoning effect during the process exhibiting favorable kinetic behavior toward MOR. Specifically, the remarkable catalytic activity (97.6 mA cm^-2/1544.3 mA mg^-1) of FeNi₂S₄/NiS-NG for methanol oxidation was achieved, superior to most reported non-noble electrocatalysts. Additionally, the catalyst showed competitive electrocatalytic stability, with a current density of over 90% after 2000 consecutive CV cycles. This study offers promising insights into the rational modulation of the morphology and components of precious-metal-free catalysts for fuel cell applications.

Rapid and Direct Liquid-Phase Synthesis of Luminescent Metal Halide Superlattices

The crystallization of nanocrystal building blocks into artificial superlattices has emerged as an efficient approach for tailoring the nanoscale properties and functionalities of novel devices. To date, ordered arrays of colloidal metal halide nanocrystals have mainly been achieved by using post-synthetic strategies. Here, a rapid and direct liquid-phase synthesis is presented to achieve a highly robust crystallization of luminescent metal halide nanocrystals into perfect face-centered-cubic (FCC) superlattices on the micrometer scale. The continuous growth of individual nanocrystals is observed within the superlattice, followed by the disassembly of the superlattices into individually dispersed nanocrystals owing to the highly repulsive interparticle interactions induced by large nanocrystals. Transmission electron microscopy characterization reveals that owing to an increase in solvent entropy, the structure of the superlattices transforms from FCC to hexagonal close-packed (HCP) and the nanocrystals disassemble. The FCC superlattice exhibits a single and slightly redshifted emission, due to the reabsorption-free property of the building block units. Compared to individual nanocrystals, the superlattices have three times higher quantum yield with improved environmental stability, making them ideal for use as ultrabright blue-light emitters. This study is expected to facilitate the creation of metamaterials with ordered nanocrystal structures and their practical applications.

Preparation, properties and applications of two-dimensional superlattices

As a combination concept of a 2D material and a superlattice, two-dimensional superlattices (2DSs) have attracted increasing attention recently. The natural advantages of 2D materials in their properties, dimension, diversity and compatibility, and their gradually improved technologies for preparation and device fabrication serve as solid foundations for the development of 2DSs. Compared with the existing 2D materials and even their heterostructures, 2DSs relate to more materials and elaborate architectures, leading to novel systems with more degrees of freedom to modulate material properties at the nanoscale. Here, three typical types of 2DSs, including the component, strain-induced and moiré superlattices, are reviewed. The preparation methods, properties and state-of-the-art applications of each type are summarized. An outlook of the challenges and future developments is also presented. We hope that this work can provide a reference for the development of 2DS-related research.

Synergetic Dual-Atom Catalysts: The Next Boom of Atomic Catalysts

Dual-atom catalysts (DACs) are an important branch of single-atom catalysts (SACs), in which the former can effectively break the dilemma faced by the traditional SACs. The synergetic effects between bimetallic atoms provide many active sites, promising to improve catalytic performance and even catalyze more complex reactions. This paper reviews the recent research progresses of two kinds of DACs, including homonuclear and heteronuclear DACs, and their applications in oxygen reduction, carbon dioxide reduction, hydrogen evolution, oxygen evolution, Zn-air batteries, tandem catalytic reactions, and so on. In addition, in order to promote the further development of DACs, the challenges and perspectives of DACs are put forward.

Wood-Derived Monolithic Catalysts with the Ability of Activating Water Molecules for Oxygen Electrocatalysis

Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is the key reaction on cathode of rechargeable zinc-air batteries (ZABs). However, the lack of protons in alkaline conditions limits the rate of ORR. Herein, an activating water strategy is proposed to promote oxygen electrocatalytic activity by enhancing the proton production from water dissociation. FeP nanoparticles (NPs) are coupled on N-doped wood-derived catalytically active carbon (FeP-NWCC) to associate bifunctional active sites. In alkaline, FeP-NWCC possesses outstanding catalytic activities toward ORR (E_1/2  = 0.86 V) and Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) (overpotential is 310 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 ). The liquid ZABs assembled by FeP-NWCC deliver superior peak power density (144 mW cm^-2 ) and cycle stability (over 450 h). The quasi-solid-state ZABs based on FeP-NWCC also display excellent performances. Theoretical calculation illustrates that the superb bifunctional performance of FeP-NWCC results from the elevated dissociation efficiency of water via FeP NPs to assist the oxygen catalytic process. The strategy of activating water provides a new perspective for the design of ORR/OER bifunctional catalysts. This work is a model for the application of forest biomass.

Carbonaceous FexP Synthesized via Carbothermic Reduction of Dephosphorization Slag as Hydrogen Evolution Catalyst for Water Splitting

Developing the high-efficiency and cheap non-noble catalysts towards hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is of significance for water splitting. Herein, for the first time, we report a simple method of acid leaching combined with carbothermic reduction with dephosphorization slag to construct a carbonaceous FexP/C catalyst. In alkaline medium, the corresponding overpotential when the output current density was 10 mA cm−2 (η10) was only 145 mV. Additionally, there was no obvious attenuation after 3000 cycles, which showed significantly better activity and stability than that of non-carbonaceous FexP catalysts prepared by gas–solid phosphating. The structure and composition of FexP/C were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive spectroscopy, and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometer. The electrochemical properties of the electrode were evaluated by cyclic voltammetry, linear scanning voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and cyclic stability. The results showed that the prepared FexP/C was composed of FeP-Fe2P mixed nanocrystals supported on amorphous carbon. Compared with FexP, the synergistic catalysis of the FeP and Fe2P phases as well as the interactive support effect between the FeP-Fe2P mixed nanocrystals and the amorphous carbon support will attribute the rich active sites for electrocatalytic reaction and reduce the charge transfer resistance. Thus, FexP/C has good hydrogen evolution activity and stability. Overall, the preparation of catalysts with high additional value based on dephosphorization slag was preliminarily explored.

Oriented Growth of Neural Stem Cell–Derived Neurons Regulated by Magnetic Nanochains

Neural stem cell therapy has become a promising cure in the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders. Owing to the anisotropy of the nervous system, the newly derived neurons need not only the functional integrity but also the oriented growth to contact with the partner cells to establish functional connections. So the oriented growth of the newly derived neurons is a key factor in neural stem cell–based nerve regeneration. Nowadays, various biomaterials have been applied to assist in the oriented growth of neural stem cell–derived neurons. However, among these biomaterials, the magnetic materials applied in guiding the neuronal growth are still fewer than the other materials, such as the fibers. So in this work, we developed the magnetic nanochains to guide the oriented growth of neural stem cell–derived neurons. With the guidance of the magnetic nanochains, the seeded neural stem cells exhibited a good arrangement, and the neural stem cell–derived neurons showed well-oriented growth with the orientation of the nanochains. We anticipated that the magnetic nanochains would have huge potential in stem cell–based nerve regeneration.
