Pt Single Atoms on CrN Nanoparticles Deliver Outstanding Activity and CO Tolerance in the Hydrogen Oxidation Reaction

Tailoring Oxygen Reduction Reaction on M-N-C Catalysts via Axial Coordination Engineering

The development of fuel cells and metal-air batteries is an important link in realizing a sustainable energy supply and a green environment for the future. Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is the core reaction of such energy conversion devices. M-N-C catalysts exhibit encouraging ORR catalytic activity and are the most promising candidates for replacing Pt/C. The electrocatalytic performance of M-N-C catalysts is intimately related to the specific metal species and the coordination environment of the central metal atom. Axial coordination engineering presents an avenue for the development of highly active ORR catalysts and has seen considerable progress over the past decade. Nevertheless, the accurate control over the coordination environment and electronic structure of M-N-C catalysts at the atomic scale poses a big challenge. Herein, the diverse axial ligands, characterization techniques, and modulation mechanisms for axial coordination engineering are encompassed and discussed. Furthermore, some pressing matters to be solved and challenges that deserve to be explored and investigated in the future for axial coordination engineering are proposed.

Antioxidant activities of metal single-atom nanozymes in biomedicine

Nanozymes are a class of nanomaterials with enzyme-like activity that can mimic the catalytic properties of natural enzymes. The small size, high catalytic activity, and strong stability of nanozymes compared to those of natural enzymes allow them to not only exist in a wide temperature and pH range but also maintain stability in complex environments. Recently developed single-atom nanozymes have metal active sites composed of a single metal atom fixed to a carrier. These metal atoms can act as independent catalytically active centers. Metal single-atom nanozymes have a homogeneous single-atom structure and a suitable coordination environment for stronger catalytic activity and specificity than traditional nanozymes. The antioxidant metal single-atom nanozymes with the ability of removing reactive oxygen species (ROS) can simulate superoxidase dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase to show different effects in vivo. Furthermore, due to the similar structure of antioxidant enzymes, a metal single-atom nanozyme often has multiple antioxidant activities, and this synergistic effect can more efficiently remove ROS related to oxidative stress. The versatility of single-atom nanozymes encompasses a broad spectrum of biomedical applications such as anti-oxidation, anti-infection, immunomodulatory, biosensing, bioimaging, and tumor therapy applications. Herein, the nervous, circulatory, digestive, motor, immune, and sensory systems are considered in order to demonstrate the role of metal single-atom nanozymes in biomedical antioxidants.

Towards bridging thermo/electrocatalytic CO oxidation: from nanoparticles to single atoms

Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), as a feasible alternative to replace the traditional fossil fuel-based energy converter, contribute significantly to the global sustainability agenda. At the PEMFC anode, given the high exchange current density, Pt/C is deemed the catalyst-of-choice to ensure that the hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) occurs at a sufficiently fast pace. The high performance of Pt/C, however, can only be achieved under the premise that high purity hydrogen is used. For instance, in the presence of trace level carbon monoxide, a typical contaminant during H2 production, Pt is severely deactivated by CO surface blockage. Addressing the poisoning issue necessitates for either developing anti-poisoning electrocatalysts or using pre-purified H2 obtained via a thermo-catalysis route. In other words, the CO poisoning issue can be addressed by either thermal-catalysis from the H2 supply side or electrocatalysis at the user side, respectively. In spite of the distinction between thermo-catalysis and electro-catalysis, there are high similarities between the two routes. Essentially, a reduction in the kinetic barrier for the combination of CO to oxygen containing intermediates is required in both techniques. Therefore, bridging electrocatalysis and thermocatalysis might offer new insight into the development of cutting edge catalysts to solve the poisoning issue, which, however, stands as an underexplored frontier in catalysis science. This review provides a critical appraisal of the recent advancements in preferential CO oxidation (CO-PROX) thermocatalysts and anti-poisoning HOR electrocatalysts, aiming to bridge the gap in cognition between the two routes. First, we discuss the differences in thermal/electrocatalysis, CO oxidation mechanisms, and anti-CO poisoning strategies. Second, we comprehensively summarize the progress of supported and unsupported CO-tolerant catalysts based on the timeline of development (nanoparticles to clusters to single atoms), focusing on metal-support interactions and interface reactivity. Third, we elucidate the stability issue and theoretical understanding of CO-tolerant electrocatalysts, which are critical factors for the rational design of high-performance catalysts. Finally, we underscore the imminent challenges in bridging thermal/electrocatalytic CO oxidation, with theory, materials, and the mechanism as the three main weapons to gain a more in-depth understanding. We anticipate that this review will contribute to the cognition of both thermocatalysis and electrocatalysis.

Thermal Shock Synthesis for Loading Sub-2 nm Ru Nanoclusters on Titanium Nitride as a Remarkable Electrocatalyst toward Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Heterogeneous catalysts embracing metal entities on suitable supports are profound in catalyzing various chemical reactions, and substantial synthetic endeavors in metal-support interaction modulation are made to enhance catalytic performance. Here, it is reported the loading of sub-2 nm Ru nanocrystals (NCs) on titanium nitride support (HTS-Ru-NCs/TiN) via a special Ru-Ti interaction using the high-temperature shock (HTS) method. Direct dechlorination of the adsorbed RuCl3, ultrafast nucleation process, and short coalescence duration at ultrahigh temperatures contribute to the immobilization of Ru NCs on TiN support via producing the Ru-Ti interfacial perimeter. HTS-Ru-NCs/TiN shows remarkable activity toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline solution, yielding ultralow overpotentials of 16.3 and 86.6 mV to achieve 10 and 100 mA cm-2, respectively. The alkaline and anion exchange membrane water electrolyzers assembled using HTS-Ru-NCs/TiN yield 1.0 A cm-2 at 1.65 and 1.67 V, respectively, which validate its applicability in the hydrogen production industry. Theoretical simulations reveal the favorable formation of Ru─O and Ti─H bonds at the interfacial perimeters between Ru NCs and TiN, which accelerates the prerequisite water dissociation kinetics for enhanced HER activity. This exemplified work motivates the design of specific interfacial perimeters via the HTS strategy to improve the performance of diverse catalysis.

Self-Organized Gradually Single-Atom-Layer of Metal Osmium for an Unprecedented Hydrogen Production from Seawater

Atomic thick two-dimensional (2D) materials with exciting physical, chemical, and electronic properties are gaining increasing attention in next-generation science and technology, showing great promise in catalysis and energy science. However, the precise design and synthesis of efficient catalytic systems based on such materials still face many difficulties, especially in how to control the preparation of structurally determined, highly active, atomic-scale distribution of material systems. Here, we report that a highly active zerovalent osmium single-atom-layer with a thickness of single atom size has been successfully and controllably self-organized on the surface of 2D graphdiyne (GDY) material. Detailed characterizations showed that the incomplete charge transfer effect between the Os atoms and GDY not only stabilized the catalytic system but also improved the intrinsic activity, making the Gibbs free energy reach the best and resulting in remarkable performance with a small overpotential of 49 mV at 500 mA cm-2, large specific j0 of 18.6 mA cm-2, and turnover frequency of 3.89 H2 s-1 at 50 mV. In addition, the formation of sp-C-Os bonds guarantees the high long-term stability of 800 h at a large current density of 500 mA cm-2 in alkaline simulated seawater.

CO-Tolerant Hydrogen Oxidation Electrocatalysts for Low-Temperature Hydrogen Fuel Cells

The severe performance degradation of low-temperature hydrogen fuel cells upon exposure to trace amounts of carbon monoxide (CO) impurities in reformate hydrogen fuels is one of the challenges that hinders their commercialization. Despite significant efforts that have been made, the CO-tolerance performance of electrocatalysts for the hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) is still unsatisfactory. This Perspective discusses the path forward for the rational design of CO-tolerant HOR electrocatalysts. The fundamentals of the CO-tolerant mechanisms on commercialized platinum group metal (PGM) electrocatalysts via either promoting CO electrooxidation or weakening CO adsorption are provided, and comprehensive discussions based on these strategies are presented with typical examples. Given the recent progress, some emerging strategies, including blocking CO diffusion with a barrier layer and developing non-PGM HOR catalysts, are also discussed. We conclude with a discussion of the strengths and limitations of these strategies along with the perspectives of the major challenges and opportunities for future research on CO-tolerant HOR electrocatalysts.

Corrosion Engineering of Part-Per-Million Single Atom Pt1/Ni(OH)2 Electrocatalyst for PET Upcycling at Ampere-Level Current Density

The plastic waste issue has posed a series of formidable challenges for the ecological environment and human health. While conventional recycling strategies often lead to plastic down-cycling, the electrochemical strategy of recovering valuable monomers enables an ideal, circular plastic economy. Here a corrosion synthesized single atom Pt1/Ni(OH)2 electrocatalyst with part-per-million noble Pt loading for highly efficient and selective upcycling of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) into valuable chemicals (potassium diformate and terephthalic acid) and green hydrogen is reported. Electro-oxidation of PET hydrolysate, ethylene glycol (EG), to formate is processed with high Faraday efficiency (FE) and selectivity (>90%) at the current density close to 1000 mA cm-2 (1.444 V vs RHE). The in situ spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations provide insights into the mechanism and the understanding of the high efficiency. Remarkably, the electro-oxidation of EG at the ampere-level current density is also successfully illustrated by using a membrane-electrode assembly with high FEs to formate integrated with hydrogen production for 500 h of continuous operation. This process allows valuable chemical production at high space-time yield and is highly profitable (588-700 $ ton-1 PET), showing an industrial perspective on single-atom catalysis of electrochemical plastic upcycling.

Multisite Cocatalysis: Single atomic Pt2+/Pt0 active sites synergistically improve the simulated sunlight driven H2O-to-H2 conversion performance of Sb2S3 nanorods

Single atomic metal (SAM) cocatalysis is a potential strategy to improve the performance of photocatalytic materials. However, the cocatalytic mechanism of SAM sites in different valence states is rarely reported. Herein, single atomic Pt2+/Pt0 active sites were anchored on Sb2S3 nanorods to synergistically improve the photoactivity for hydrogen production under simulated sunlight. Experimental results and density functional theory calculations indicated that the coexistence of single atomic Pt2+/Pt0 sites synergistically improves the broadband light harvesting and promotes the Sb2S3-to-Pt electron transfer following inhibited photoexciton recombination kinetics and enhanced H proton adsorption capacity, resulting higher and more durable photoactivity for hydrogen production. Therefore, the optimal Sb2S3-Pt0.9‰ composite catalyst achieved remarkably enhanced hydrogen evolution rate of 1.37 mmol∙g-1∙h-1 (about 105-fold greater of that of Sb2S3 NRs) under faintly alkaline condition, and about 5.41 % of apparent quantum yield (AQY700 nm) was achieved, which shows obvious superiority in hydrogen production by contrasting with the reported Sb2S3-based photocatalysts and conventional semiconductor photocatalytic materials modified with noble metals. This study elucidate a well-defined mechanism of multisite cocatalysis for photoactivity improvement.

Atomically-Thin Holey 2D Nanosheets of Defect-Engineered MoN-Mo5 N6 Composites as Effective Hybridization Matrices

The defect engineering of inorganic solids has received significant attention because of its high efficacy in optimizing energy-related functionalities. Consequently, this approach is effectively leveraged in the present study to synthesize atomically-thin holey 2D nanosheets of a MoN-Mo5 N6 composite. This is achieved by controlled nitridation of assembled MoS2 monolayers, which induced sequential cation/anion migration and a gradual decrease in the Mo valency. Precise control of the interlayer distance of the MoS2 monolayers via assembly with various tetraalkylammonium ions is found to be crucial for synthesizing sub-nanometer-thick holey MoN-Mo5 N6 nanosheets with a tunable anion/cation vacancy content. The holey MoN-Mo5 N6 nanosheets are employed as efficient immobilization matrices for Pt single atoms to achieve high electrocatalytic mass activity, decent durability, and low overpotential for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In situ/ex situ spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the presence of cation-deficient Mo5 N6 domain is crucial for enhancing the interfacial interactions between the conductive molybdenum nitride substrate and Pt single atoms, leading to enhanced electron injection efficiency and electrochemical stability. The beneficial effects of the Pt-immobilizing holey MoN-Mo5 N6 nanosheets are associated with enhanced electronic coupling, resulting in improvements in HER kinetics and interfacial charge transfer.

Epitaxial Ultrathin Pt Atomic Layers on CrN Nanoparticle Catalysts

The construction of platinum (Pt) atomic layers is an effective strategy to improve the utilization efficiency of Pt atoms in electrocatalysis, thus is important for reducing the capital costs of a wide range of energy storage and conversion devices. However, the substrates used to grow Pt atomic layers are largely limited to noble metals and their alloys, which is not conducive to reducing catalyst costs. Herein, low-cost chromium nitride (CrN) is utilized as a support for the loading of epitaxial ultrathin Pt atomic layers via a simple thermal ammonolysis method. Owing to the strong anchoring and electronic regulation of Pt atomic layers by CrN, the obtained Pt atomic layers catalyst (containing electron-deficient Pt sites) exhibits excellent activity and endurance for the formic acid oxidation reaction, with a mass activity of 5.17 A mgPt -1 that is 13.6 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C catalyst. This novel strategy demonstrates that CrN can replace noble metals as a low-cost substrate for constructing Pt atomic layers catalysts.

N-Coordinated Iridium-Molybdenum Dual-Atom Catalysts Enabling Efficient Bifunctional Hydrogen Electrocatalysis

Achieving effective hydrogen evolution/oxidation reaction (HER/HOR) across a wide pH span is of critical importance in unlocking the full potential of hydrogen energy but remains intrinsically challenging. Here, we engineer the N-coordinated Ir-Mo dual atoms on a carbon matrix by ultrafast high-temperature sintering, creating an efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst for both HER and HOR in both acidic and alkaline electrolytes. The optimized catalyst, Ir-Mo DAC/NC, demonstrates exceptional performance, with a significantly reduced HER overpotential of 11.3 mV at 10 mA/cm2 and a HOR exchange current (i0,m) of 3972 mA/mgIr in acidic conditions, surpassing the performance of Pt/C and Ir/C catalysts. In alkaline conditions, Ir-Mo DAC/NC also outperforms Pt/C, as evidenced by its low HER overpotential of 23 mV at 10 mA/cm2 and a high i0,m of 1308 mA/mgIr. Furthermore, our catalyst exhibits remarkable stability in both acidic and alkaline environments. DFT calculations results reveal that the superior electrochemical performance of Ir-Mo DAC/NC arises from the electronic synergy between Ir and Mo pairs, which regulates the interaction between the intermediates and active sites. These findings present a promising strategy for the development of dual-atom catalysts (DACs), with potential applications in the polymer fuel cells and water electrolyzers.

Metal nitrides for seawater electrolysis

Electrocatalytic high-throughput seawater electrolysis for hydrogen production is a promising green energy technology that offers possibilities for environmental and energy sustainability. However, large-scale application is limited by the complex composition of seawater, high concentration of Cl- leading to competing reaction, and severe corrosion of electrode materials. In recent years, extensive research has been conducted to address these challenges. Metal nitrides (MNs) with excellent chemical stability and catalytic properties have emerged as ideal electrocatalyst candidates. This review presents the electrode reactions and basic parameters of the seawater splitting process, and summarizes the types and selection principles of conductive substrates with critical analysis of the design principles for seawater electrocatalysts. The focus is on discussing the properties, synthesis, and design strategies of MN-based electrocatalysts. Finally, we provide an outlook for the future development of MNs in the high-throughput seawater electrolysis field and highlight key issues that require further research and optimization.

Modulating Charge Separation of Oxygen-Doped Boron Nitride with Isolated Co Atoms for Enhancing CO2 -to-CO Photoreduction

To alleviate the greenhouse effect and address the related energy crisis, solar-driven reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2 ) to value-added products is considered as a sustainable strategy. However, the insufficient separation and rapid recombination of photogenerated charge carriers during photocatalysis greatly limit their reduction efficiency and practical application potential. Here, isolated Cobalt (Co) atoms are successfully decorated into oxygen-doped boron nitride (BN) via an in situ pyrolysis method, achieving greatly improved catalytic activity and selectivity to the carbon monoxide (CO) product. X-ray absorption fine spectroscopy demonstrates that the isolated Co atoms are stabilized by the O and N atoms with an unsaturated CoO2 N1 configuration. Further experimental investigation and theoretical simulations confirm that the decorated Co atoms not only work as the real active center during the CO2 reduction process, but also perform as the electron pump to promote the electron/hole separation and transfer, resulting in greatly accelerated reaction kinetics and improved activity. In addition, the CoO2 N1 coordination geometry is favorable to the conversion from *CO2 to *COOH, which shall be considered as a selectivity-determining step for the evolution of the CO products. The surface modulation strategy at the atomic level opens a new avenue for regulating the reaction kinetics for photocatalytic CO2 reduction.

Pb-Modified Ultrathin RuCu Nanoflowers for Active, Stable, and CO-resistant Alkaline Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Oxidation

CO poisoning of Pt group metal (PGM) catalysts is a chronic problem for hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR), the anodic reaction of hydroxide exchange membrane fuel cell (HEMFC) for converting H2 to electric energy in sustainable manner. We demonstrate here an ultrathin Ru-based nanoflower modified with Pb (PbRuCu NF) as an active, stable, and CO-resistant catalyst for alkaline HOR. Mechanism studies show that the presence of Pb can weaken the adsorption of *H, strengthen *OH adsorption to facilitate CO oxidation, as a result of significantly enhanced HOR activity and improved CO tolerance. Furthermore, in situ electrochemical attenuated total reflection surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (ATR-SEIRAS) suggests that Pb acts as oxygen-rich site to regulate the behavior of the linear CO adsorption. The optimized Pb1.04 -Ru92 Cu8 /C displays a mass activity and specific activity of 1.10 A mgRu -1 and 5.55 mA cm-2 , which are ≈10 and ≈31 times higher than those of commercial Pt/C. This work provides a facile strategy for the design of Ru-based catalyst with high activity and strong CO-resistance for alkaline HOR, which may promote the fundamental researches on the rational design of functional catalysts.

Distinct Selectivity Control in Solar-Driven Bio-Based α-Hydroxyl Acid Conversion: A Comparison of Pt Nanoparticles and Atomically Dispersed Pt on CdS

Solar-driven photocatalytic lignocellulose conversion is a promising strategy for the sustainable production of high-value chemicals, but selectivity control remains a challenging goal in this field. Here, we report efficient and selective conversion of lignocellulose-derived α-hydroxyl acids to tartaric acid derivatives, α-keto acids, and H2 using Pt-modified CdS catalysts. Pt nanoparticles on CdS selectively produce tartaric acid derivatives via C-C coupling, while atomically dispersed Pt on CdS switches product selectivity to the oxidation reaction to produce α-keto acids. The atomically dispersed Pt species stabilized by Pt-S bonds promote the activation of the hydroxyl group and thus switch product selectivity from tartaric acid derivatives to α-keto acids. A broad range of lignocellulose-derived α-hydroxyl acids was applied for preparing the corresponding tartaric acid derivatives and α-keto acids over the two Pt-modified CdS catalysts. This work highlights the unique performance of metal sulfides in coupling reactions and demonstrates a strategy for rationally tuning product selectivity by engineering the interaction between metal sulfide and cocatalyst.

Stabilizing Low-Valence Single Atoms by Constructing Metalloid Tungsten Carbide Supports for Efficient Hydrogen Oxidation and Evolution

Designing novel single-atom catalysts (SACs) supports to modulate the electronic structure is crucial to optimize the catalytic activity, but rather challenging. Herein, a general strategy is proposed to utilize the metalloid properties of supports to trap and stabilize single-atoms with low-valence states. A series of single-atoms supported on the surface of tungsten carbide (M-WCx , M=Ru, Ir, Pd) are rationally developed through a facile pyrolysis method. Benefiting from the metalloid properties of WCx , the single-atoms exhibit weak coordination with surface W and C atoms, resulting in the formation of low-valence active centers similar to metals. The unique metal-metal interaction effectively stabilizes the low-valence single atoms on the WCx surface and improves the electronic orbital energy level distribution of the active sites. As expected, the representative Ru-WCx exhibits superior mass activities of 7.84 and 62.52 A mgRu -1 for the hydrogen oxidation and evolution reactions (HOR/HER), respectively. In-depth mechanistic analysis demonstrates that an ideal dual-sites cooperative mechanism achieves a suitable adsorption balance of Had and OHad , resulting in an energetically favorable Volmer step. This work offers new guidance for the precise construction of highly active SACs.

Confinement Effects in Carbonized ZIF-Confined Hollow PtCo Nanospheres Enable the Methanol Oxidation Reaction

Confinement effects in highly porous nanostructures can effectively adjust the selectivity and kinetics of electrochemical reactions, which can boost the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). In this work, carbonized ZIF-8-confined hollow PtCo nanospheres (PtCo@carbonized ZIF-8) were fabricated using a facile strategy. A monodisperse confined region was successfully prepared, and the dispersion of the PtCo nanoparticles (NPs) could be precisely regulated, allowing for the effective tuning of the confined region. Thus, the precise regulation of the catalytic reaction was achieved. Importantly, hollow PtCo NPs were prepared using a method based on the Kirkendall effect, and their forming mechanism was systematically investigated. Because of the confinement effects of carbonized zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), the crystal and electronic structures of the PtCo NPs were able to be effectively tuned. Our electrochemical results show that PtCo@carbonized ZIF-8 composites manifest a higher mass activity (1.4 A mgPt-1) and better stability compared to commercial Pt/C.

Nanotubular TiO x N y -Supported Ir Single Atoms and Clusters as Thin-Film Electrocatalysts for Oxygen Evolution in Acid Media

A versatile approach to the production of cluster- and single atom-based thin-film electrode composites is presented. The developed TiO _x N _y -Ir catalyst was prepared from sputtered Ti-Ir alloy constituted of 0.8 ± 0.2 at % Ir in α-Ti solid solution. The Ti-Ir solid solution on the Ti metal foil substrate was anodically oxidized to form amorphous TiO₂-Ir and later subjected to heat treatment in air and in ammonia to prepare the final catalyst. Detailed morphological, structural, compositional, and electrochemical characterization revealed a nanoporous film with Ir single atoms and clusters that are present throughout the entire film thickness and concentrated at the Ti/TiO _x N _y -Ir interface as a result of the anodic oxidation mechanism. The developed TiO _x N _y -Ir catalyst exhibits very high oxygen evolution reaction activity in 0.1 M HClO₄, reaching 1460 A g^-1 _Ir at 1.6 V vs reference hydrogen electrode. The new preparation concept of single atom- and cluster-based thin-film catalysts has wide potential applications in electrocatalysis and beyond. In the present paper, a detailed description of the new and unique method and a high-performance thin film catalyst are provided along with directions for the future development of high-performance cluster and single-atom catalysts prepared from solid solutions.

Hydroxyl-Binding Energy-Induced Kinetic Gap Narrowing between Acidic and Alkaline Hydrogen Oxidation Reaction on Intermetallic Ru3 Sn7 Catalyst

Developing highly efficient catalysts toward alkaline hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) and narrowing the kinetic gap between acidic and alkaline electrolytes are of great importance for the practical application of alkaline exchange membrane fuel cell . Herein, ordered Ru₃ Sn₇ /C intermetallic compound has been developed for the HOR under alkaline and acidic conditions. The authors demonstrate that the ordered intermetallic Ru₃ Sn₇ /C shows much enhanced HOR activity, stability, and CO-tolerance compared with its disordered RuSn solid solution alloy counterpart. More importantly, the authors find that the kinetic gap of HOR between acidic and alkaline media is significantly narrowed in the as-synthesized intermetallic Ru₃ Sn₇ /C catalysts. Combined experiment results and theoretical calculations, the authors understand that promoted hydroxyl-binding energy on Ru₃ Sn₇ /C derived from the intermetallic-induced strong electron interaction is responsible for the accelerated alkaline HOR performance and narrowed kinetic gap.
