Electrocatalysts for the Oxygen Evolution Reaction in Acidic Media

Ultrathin and Conformal Depletion Layer of Core/Shell Heterojunction Enables Efficient and Stable Acidic Water Oxidation

Ru-based electrocatalysts hold great promise for developing affordable proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers. However, the harsh acidic oxidative environment of the acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) often causes undesirable overoxidation of Ru active sites and subsequent serious activity loss. Here, we present an ultrathin and conformal depletion layer attached to the Schottky heterojunction of core/shell RuCo/RuCoOx that not only maximizes the availability of active sites but also improves its durability and intrinsic activity for acidic OER. Operando synchrotron characterizations combined with theoretical calculations elucidate that the lattice strain and charge transfer induced by Schottky heterojunction substantially regulate the electronic structures of active sites, which modulates the OER pathway and suppresses the overoxidation of Ru species. Significantly, the closed core/shell architecture of the RuCo/RuCoOx ensures the structure integrity of the Schottky heterojunction under acidic OER conditions. As a result, the core/shell RuCo/RuCoOx Schottky heterojunction exhibits an unprecedented durability up to 250 0 h at 10 mA cm-2 with an ultralow overpotential of ∼170 mV at 10 mA cm-2 in 0.5 M H2SO4. The RuCo/RuCoOx catalyst also demonstrates superior durability in a proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer, showcasing the potential for practical applications.

Constructing heterogeneous interface between Co3O4 and RuO2 with enhanced electronic regulation for efficient oxygen evolution reaction at large current density

Exploring effective strategies for developing new high-efficiency catalysts for water splitting is essential for advancing hydrogen energy technology. Herein, Co3O4/RuO2 heterojunction interface is construct through ion exchange reaction and pyrolysis. The as-synthesized Co3O4/RuO2-4 exhibits outstanding oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity at the current density of 100 mA cm-2 with a low overpotential of 276 mV, and remarkable stability (maintaining activity for 60 h at 100 mA cm-2). Experimental results and theoretical calculations reveal that the electrons around the heterogeneous interface transferred from RuO2 to Co3O4, resulting in electron redistribution and optimization of energy barriers for OER intermediates. This unique composite catalyst structure offers a new potential for designing efficient oxygen electrocatalysts at large current density.

Half-metallization Atom-Fingerprints Achieved at Ultrafast Oxygen-Evaporated Pyrochlores for Acidic Water Oxidation

The stability and catalytic activity of acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are strongly determined by the coordination states and spatial symmetry among metal sites at catalysts. Herein, an ultrafast oxygen evaporation technology to rapidly soften the intrinsic covalent bonds using ultrahigh electrical pulses is suggested, in which prospective charged excited states at this extreme avalanche condition can generate a strong electron-phonon coupling to rapidly evaporate some coordinated oxygen (O) atoms, finally leading to a controllable half-metallization feature. Simultaneously, the relative metal (M) site arrays can be orderly locked to delineate some intriguing atom-fingerprints at pyrochlore catalysts, where the coexistence of metallic bonds (M─M) and covalent bonds (M─O) at this symmetry-breaking configuration can partially restrain crystal field effect to generate a particular high-spin occupied state. This half-metallization catalyst can effectively optimize the spin-related reaction kinetics in acidic OER, giving rise to 10.3 times (at 188 mV overpotential) reactive activity than pristine pyrochlores. This work provides a new understanding of half-metallization atom-fingerprints at catalyst surfaces to accelerate acidic water oxidation.

Non-Noble-Metal-Based Electrocatalysts for Acidic Oxygen Evolution Reaction: Recent Progress, Challenges, and Perspectives

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays a pivotal role in diverse renewable energy storage and conversion technologies, including water electrolysis, electrochemical CO2 reduction, nitrogen fixation, and metal-air batteries. Among various water electrolysis techniques, proton exchange membrane (PEM)-based water electrolysis devices offer numerous advantages, including high current densities, exceptional chemical stability, excellent proton conductivity, and high-purity H2. Nevertheless, the prohibitive cost associated with Ir/Ru-based OER electrocatalysts poses a significant barrier to the broad-scale application of PEM-based water splitting. Consequently, it is crucial to advance the development of non-noble metal OER catalysis substance with high acid-activity and stability, thereby fostering their widespread integration into PEM water electrolyzers (PEMWEs). In this review, a comprehensive analysis of the acidic OER mechanism, encompassing the adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM), lattice oxygen mechanism (LOM) and oxide path mechanism (OPM) is offered. Subsequently, a systematic summary of recently reported noble-metal-free catalysts including transition metal-based, carbon-based and other types of catalysts is provided. Additionally, a comprehensive compilation of in situ/operando characterization techniques is provided, serving as invaluable tools for furnishing experimental evidence to comprehend the catalytic mechanism. Finally, the present challenges and future research directions concerning precious-metal-free acidic OER are comprehensively summarized and discussed in this review.

Acidic Oxygen Evolution Reaction: Fundamental Understanding and Electrocatalysts Design

Water electrolysis driven by "green electricity" is an ideal technology to realize energy conversion and store renewable energy into hydrogen. With the development of proton exchange membrane (PEM), water electrolysis in acidic media suitable for many situations with an outstanding advantage of high gas purity has attracted significant attention. Compared with hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in water electrolysis, oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a kinetic sluggish process that needs a higher overpotential. Especially in acidic media, OER process poses higher requirements for the electrocatalysts, such as high efficiency, high stability and low costs. This review focuses on the acidic OER electrocatalysis, reaction mechanisms, and critical parameters used to evaluate performance. Especially the modification strategies applied in the design and construction of new-type electrocatalysts are also summarized. The characteristics of traditional noble metal-based electrocatalysts and the noble metal-free electrocatalysts developed in recent decades are compared and discussed. Finally, the current challenges for the most promising acidic OER electrocatalysts are presented, together with a perspective for future water electrolysis.

Advances in Noble Metal Electrocatalysts for Acidic Oxygen Evolution Reaction: Construction of Under-Coordinated Active Sites

Renewable energy-driven proton exchange membrane water electrolyzer (PEMWE) attracts widespread attention as a zero-emission and sustainable technology. Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts with sluggish OER kinetics and rapid deactivation are major obstacles to the widespread commercialization of PEMWE. To date, although various advanced electrocatalysts have been reported to enhance acidic OER performance, Ru/Ir-based nanomaterials remain the most promising catalysts for PEMWE applications. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop efficient, stable, and cost-effective Ru/Ir catalysts. Since the structure-performance relationship is one of the most important tools for studying the reaction mechanism and constructing the optimal catalytic system. In this review, the recent research progress from the construction of unsaturated sites to gain a deeper understanding of the reaction and deactivation mechanism of catalysts is summarized. First, a general understanding of OER reaction mechanism, catalyst dissolution mechanism, and active site structure is provided. Then, advances in the design and synthesis of advanced acidic OER catalysts are reviewed in terms of the classification of unsaturated active site design, i.e., alloy, core-shell, single-atom, and framework structures. Finally, challenges and perspectives are presented for the future development of OER catalysts and renewable energy technologies for hydrogen production.

Strain-Triggered Distinct Oxygen Evolution Reaction Pathway in Two-Dimensional Metastable Phase IrO2 via CeO2 Loading

A strain engineering strategy is crucial for designing a high-performance catalyst. However, how to control the strain in metastable phase two-dimensional (2D) materials is technically challenging due to their nanoscale sizes. Here, we report that cerium dioxide (CeO2) is an ideal loading material for tuning the in-plane strain in 2D metastable 1T-phase IrO2 (1T-IrO2) via an in situ growth method. Surprisingly, 5% CeO2 loaded 1T-IrO2 with 8% compressive strain achieves an overpotential of 194 mV at 10 mA cm-2 in a three-electrode system. It also retained a high current density of 900 mA cm-2 at a cell voltage of 1.8 V for a 400 h stability test in the proton-exchange membrane device. More importantly, the Fourier transform infrared measurements and density functional theory calculation reveal that the CeO2 induced strained 1T-IrO2 directly undergo the *O-*O radical coupling mechanism for O2 generation, totally different from the traditional adsorbate evolution mechanism in pure 1T-IrO2. These findings illustrate the important role of strain engineering in paving up an optimal catalytic pathway in order to achieve robust electrochemical performance.

Stabilizing atomic Ru species in conjugated sp2 carbon-linked covalent organic framework for acidic water oxidation

Suppressing the kinetically favorable lattice oxygen oxidation mechanism pathway and triggering the adsorbate evolution mechanism pathway at the expense of activity are the state-of-the-art strategies for Ru-based electrocatalysts toward acidic water oxidation. Herein, atomically dispersed Ru species are anchored into an acidic stable vinyl-linked 2D covalent organic framework with unique crossed π-conjugation, termed as COF-205-Ru. The crossed π-conjugated structure of COF-205-Ru not only suppresses the dissolution of Ru through strong Ru-N motifs, but also reduces the oxidation state of Ru by multiple π-conjugations, thereby activating the oxygen coordinated to Ru and stabilizing the oxygen vacancies during oxygen evolution process. Experimental results including X-ray absorption spectroscopy, in situ Raman spectroscopy, in situ powder X-ray diffraction patterns, and theoretical calculations unveil the activated oxygen with elevated energy level of O 2p band, decreased oxygen vacancy formation energy, promoted electrochemical stability, and significantly reduced energy barrier of potential determining step for acidic water oxidation. Consequently, the obtained COF-205-Ru displays a high mass activity with 2659.3 A g-1, which is 32-fold higher than the commercial RuO2, and retains long-term durability of over 280 h. This work provides a strategy to simultaneously promote the stability and activity of Ru-based catalysts for acidic water oxidation.

High-entropy alloy electrocatalysts go to (sub-)nanoscale

Alloying has proven power to upgrade metallic electrocatalysts, while the traditional alloys encounter limitation for optimizing electronic structures of surface metallic sites in a continuous manner. High-entropy alloys (HEAs) overcome this limitation by manageably tuning the adsorption/desorption energies of reaction intermediates. Recently, the marriage of nanotechnology and HEAs has made considerable progresses for renewable energy technologies, showing two important trends of size diminishment and multidimensionality. This review is dedicated to summarizing recent advances of HEAs that are rationally designed for energy electrocatalysis. We first explain the advantages of HEAs as electrocatalysts from three aspects: high entropy, nanometer, and multidimension. Then, several structural regulation methods are proposed to promote the electrocatalysis of HEAs, involving the thermodynamically nonequilibrium synthesis, regulating the (sub-)nanosize and anisotropic morphologies, as well as engineering the atomic ordering. The general relationship between the electronic structures and electrocatalytic properties of HEAs is further discussed. Finally, we outline remaining challenges of this field, aiming to inspire more sophisticated HEA-based nanocatalysts.

Partial Exsolution Enables Superior Bifunctionality of Ir@SrIrO3 for Acidic Overall Water Splitting

The pursuit of efficient and durable bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting in acidic media is highly desirable, albeit challenging. SrIrO3 based perovskites are electrochemically active for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), however, their inert activities toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) severely restrict the practical implementation in overall water splitting. Herein, an Ir@SrIrO3 heterojunction is newly developed by a partial exsolution approach, ensuring strong metal-support interaction for OER and HER. Notably, the Ir@SrIrO3-175 electrocatalyst, prepared by annealing SrIrO3 in 5% H2 atmosphere at 175 °C, delivers ultralow overpotentials of 229 mV at 10 mA cm-2 for OER and 28 mV at 10 mA cm-2 for HER, surpassing most recently reported bifunctional electrocatalysts. Moreover, the water electrolyzer using the Ir@SrIrO3-175 bifunctional electrocatalyst demonstrates the potential application prospect with high electrochemical performance and excellent durability in acidic environment. Theoretical calculations unveil that constructing Ir@SrIrO3 heterojunction regulates interfacial electronic redistribution, ultimately enabling low energy barriers for both OER and HER.

Ru/Ir-Based Electrocatalysts for Oxygen Evolution Reaction in Acidic Conditions: From Mechanisms, Optimizations to Challenges

The generation of green hydrogen by water splitting is identified as a key strategic energy technology, and proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) is one of the desirable technologies for converting renewable energy sources into hydrogen. However, the harsh anode environment of PEMWE and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) involving four-electron transfer result in a large overpotential, which limits the overall efficiency of hydrogen production, and thus efficient electrocatalysts are needed to overcome the high overpotential and slow kinetic process. In recent years, noble metal-based electrocatalysts (e.g., Ru/Ir-based metal/oxide electrocatalysts) have received much attention due to their unique catalytic properties, and have already become the dominant electrocatalysts for the acidic OER process and are applied in commercial PEMWE devices. However, these noble metal-based electrocatalysts still face the thorny problem of conflicting performance and cost. In this review, first, noble metal Ru/Ir-based OER electrocatalysts are briefly classified according to their forms of existence, and the OER catalytic mechanisms are outlined. Then, the focus is on summarizing the improvement strategies of Ru/Ir-based OER electrocatalysts with respect to their activity and stability over recent years. Finally, the challenges and development prospects of noble metal-based OER electrocatalysts are discussed.

P-Incorporation Induced Enhancement of Lattice Oxygen Participation in Double Perovskite Oxides to Boost Water Oxidation

Activating the lattice oxygen in the catalysts to participate in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which can break the scaling relation-induced overpotential limitation (> 0.37 V) of the adsorbate evolution mechanism, has emerged as a new and highly effective guide to accelerate the OER. However, how to increase the lattice oxygen participation of catalysts during OER remains a major challenge. Herein, P-incorporation induced enhancement of lattice oxygen participation in double perovskite LaNi0.58Fe0.38P0.07O3-σ (PLNFO) is studied. P-incorporation is found to be crucial for enhancing the OER activity. The current density reaches 1.35 mA cmECSA -2 at 1.63 V (vs RHE), achieving a sixfold increase in intrinsic activity. Experimental evidences confirm the dominant lattice oxygen participation mechanism (LOM) for OER pathway on PLNFO. Further electronic structures reveal that P-incorporation shifts the O p-band center by 0.7 eV toward the Fermi level, making the states near the Fermi level more O p character, thus facilitating LOM and fast OER kinetics. This work offers a possible method to develop high-performance double perovskite OER catalysts for electrochemical water splitting.

Heterointerface MnO2/RuO2 with rich oxygen vacancies for enhanced oxygen evolution in acidic media

The design and synthesis of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts that operate efficiently and stably under acidic conditions are important for the preparation of green hydrogen energy. The low intrinsic catalytic activity and poor acid resistance of commercial RuO2 limit its further development, and the construction of heterointerface structures is the most promising strategy to break through the intrinsic activity limitation of electrocatalysts. Herein, we synthesized spherical and oxygen vacancy-rich heterointerface MnO2/RuO2 using morphology control, which promoted the kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction with the interaction between oxygen vacancies and the oxide heterointerface. MnO2/RuO2 was reported to be an acidic OER catalyst with excellent performance and stability, requiring only an ultra-low overpotential of 181 mV in 0.5 M H2SO4 to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm-2. The catalyst activity remained essentially unchanged in a 140 h stability test with an ultra-high mass activity (858.9 A g-1@ 1.5 V), which was far superior to commercial RuO2 and most previously reported noble metal-based acidic OER catalysts. The experimental results showed that the effect of more oxygen vacancies and the heterointerfaces of manganese ruthenium oxides broke the intrinsic activity limitation, provided more active sites for the OER, accelerated reaction kinetics, and improved the stability of the catalyst. The excellent performance of the catalyst suggests that MnO2/RuO2 provides a new idea for the design and study of heterointerfaces in metal oxide nanomaterials.

CoO supported NiFe layered double hydroxide sandwich-like nanosheets on hierarchical carbon framework for efficient electrocatalytic oxygen evolution

Exploration of greatly efficient and steady non-noble oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts is of great significance in improving the overall efficiency of energy density systems such as regenerative fuel cells, water electrolyzes, and metal-air batteries. Herein, inspired by hierarchical 3D porous structures with open microchannels of natural wood, CoO@NiFe LDH sandwich-like nanosheets were anchored on the carbonized wood (CW) via electrodeposition and calcination strategies. The strong interactions between CoO nanosheets and NiFe LDH nanosheets endow CoO@NiFe LDH/CW electrocatalyst with high catalytic properties toward the OER comparable to CoO/CW and NiFe LDH/CW. The optimized CoO@NiFe LDH/CW electrocatalyst demonstrates good OER catalytic performance with an overpotential of 230 mV at 100 mA cm-2. This work presents an innovative approach to utilize renewable resources for constructing advanced free-standing catalysts.

Modulated Electronic Structure of Co3O4 by Single Atoms for Efficient Anodic Oxygen Evolution in Acid

The challenge of the practical application of a water electrolyzer system lies in the development of low-manufacturing cost, highly active, and stable electrocatalysts to replace the noble metal ones, in order to enable environmentally friendly hydrogen production on a large scale. Herein, a facile method is proposed for boosting the performance of Co3O4 through the incorporation of large-sized single atoms. Due to the larger ionic radius of rare earth metals than that of Co, the incorporation elongates the bond length of Co─O, resulting in the narrowed d-p band centers and the high spin configuration, which is favorable for the interaction and charge transfer with absorbent (*OH). As a result, the Ce-incorporated Co3O4 with the longest Co─O bond length exhibits the best oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance, specifically, the turnover frequency is over 17 times higher than that of pristine Co3O4 nanosheet under an overpotential of 400 mV. Powered by a commercial Si solar cell, a two-electrode solar water-splitting device combining Ce-incorporated Co3O4 and Pt delivers a solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency of 13.53%. The strategy could provide a new insight for improving the performance of OER electrocatalysts in acid toward practical applications.

Regulating Ir-O Covalency to Boost Acidic Oxygen Evolution Reaction

The unsatisfactory oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity of IrO2 has intensively raised the cost and energy consumption of hydrogen generation from proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers. Here, the acidic OER activity of the rutile IrO2 is significantly enhanced by the incorporation of trivalent metals (e.g., Gd, Nd, and Pr) to increase the Ir-O covalency, while the high-valence (pentavalent or higher) metal incorporation decreases the Ir-O covalency resulting in worse OER activity. Experimental and theoretical analyses indicate that enhanced Ir-O covalency activates lattice oxygen and triggers lattice oxygen-mediated mechanism to enhance OER kinetics, which is verified by the finding of a linear relationship between the natural logarithm of intrinsic activity and Ir-O covalency described by charge transfer energy. By regulating the Ir-O covalency, the obtained Gd-IrO2-δ merely needs 260 mV of overpotential to reach 10 mA cm-2 and shows impressive stability during a 200-h test in 0.5 м H2SO4. This work provides an effective strategy for significantly enhancing the OER activity of the widely used IrO2 electrocatalysts through the rational regulation of Ir-O covalency.

An IrRuOx catalyst supported by oxygen-vacant Ta oxide for the oxygen evolution reaction and proton exchange membrane water electrolysis

The sustainable development of proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) requires a dramatic reduction in Ir while maintaining good catalytic activity and stability for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, high-surface-area Ta2O5 with abundant oxygen vacancies is synthesized via a facile process, followed by anchoring IrRuOx onto a Ta2O5 support (IrRuOx/Ta2O5). IrRuOx and Ta2O5 work synergistically to afford excellent catalytic performance for the acidic OER. At 0.3 mgIr cm-2, IrRuOx/Ta2O5 only needed an overpotential of 235 mV to deliver 10 mA cm-2 in an acidic half cell and needed a cell potential of 1.91 V to deliver 2 A cm-2 in a PEM water electrolyzer. The characterization results show that doping Ir into RuOx significantly improves the stability and the electrochemically active surface area of RuOx. In IrRuOx/Ta2O5, IrRuOx interacts with Ta2O5 through more electron-rich Ir, indicating strong synergy between the catalyst and the support. The use of a metal oxide support improves the catalyst dispersion, optimizes electronic structures, facilitates mass transport, and stabilizes active sites. This work demonstrates that compositing Ir with less expensive Ru and anchoring catalyst nanoparticles on platinum-group metal (PGM)-free metal oxide supports represents one of the most promising strategies to reduce Ir loading and achieve an activity-stability trade-off. Such a strategy can benefit future catalyst design for other energy storage and conventional processes.

Bifunctional Electrocatalysts for Overall and Hybrid Water Splitting

Electrocatalytic water splitting driven by renewable electricity has been recognized as a promising approach for green hydrogen production. Different from conventional strategies in developing electrocatalysts for the two half-reactions of water splitting (e.g., the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions, HER and OER) separately, there has been a growing interest in designing and developing bifunctional electrocatalysts, which are able to catalyze both the HER and OER. In addition, considering the high overpotentials required for OER while limited value of the produced oxygen, there is another rapidly growing interest in exploring alternative oxidation reactions to replace OER for hybrid water splitting toward energy-efficient hydrogen generation. This Review begins with an introduction on the fundamental aspects of water splitting, followed by a thorough discussion on various physicochemical characterization techniques that are frequently employed in probing the active sites, with an emphasis on the reconstruction of bifunctional electrocatalysts during redox electrolysis. The design, synthesis, and performance of diverse bifunctional electrocatalysts based on noble metals, nonprecious metals, and metal-free nanocarbons, for overall water splitting in acidic and alkaline electrolytes, are thoroughly summarized and compared. Next, their application toward hybrid water splitting is also presented, wherein the alternative anodic reactions include sacrificing agents oxidation, pollutants oxidative degradation, and organics oxidative upgrading. Finally, a concise statement on the current challenges and future opportunities of bifunctional electrocatalysts for both overall and hybrid water splitting is presented in the hope of guiding future endeavors in the quest for energy-efficient and sustainable green hydrogen production.

Efficient Machine Learning Model Focusing on Active Sites for the Discovery of Bifunctional Oxygen Electrocatalysts in Binary Alloys

The distinctive characteristics of alloy catalysts, encompassing composition, structure, and modifiable adsorption sites, present significant potential for the development of highly efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution/reduction reactions [oxygen evolution reactions (OERs)/oxygen reduction reactions (ORRs)]. Machine learning (ML) methods can quickly establish the relationship between material features and catalytic activity, thus accelerating the development of alloy electrocatalysts. However, the current abundance of features presents a crucial challenge in selecting the most pertinent ones. In this study, we explored seven intrinsic features directly derived from the material's structure, with a specific focus on the chemical environment of active sites and their nearest neighbors. An accurate and efficient ML model to predict potential bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts based on the intrinsic features of AB-type alloy active sites and intermediate free energies in the OERs/ORRs was established. These features possess clear physical and chemical meanings, closely linked to the electronic and geometric structures of active sites and neighboring atoms, thereby providing indispensable insights for the discovery of high-performance electrocatalysts. The ML model achieved R2 scores of 0.827, 0.913, and 0.711 for the predicted values of the three intermediate (OH, O, OOH) free energies, with corresponding mean absolute errors of 0.175, 0.242, and 0.200 eV, respectively. These results indicate that the ML model exhibits high accuracy in predicting the intermediate free energies. Furthermore, the ML model exhibited a prediction efficiency 150,000 times faster than traditional density functional theory calculations. This work will offer valuable insights and a framework for facilitating the rapid design of potential catalysts by ML methods.

Porous Tellurium-Doped Ruthenium Dioxide Nanotubes for Enhanced Acidic Water Oxidation

Electrocatalysts with high activity and durability for acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) play a crucial role in achieving cost-effective hydrogen production via proton exchange membrane water electrolysis. A novel electrocatalyst, Te-doped RuO2 (Te-RuO2) nanotubes, synthesized using a template-directed process, which significantly enhances the OER performance in acidic media is reported. The Te-RuO2 nanotubes exhibit remarkable OER activity in acidic media, requiring an overpotential of only 171 mV to achieve an anodic current density of 10 mA cm-2. Furthermore, they maintain stable chronopotentiometric performance under 10 mA cm-2 in acidic media for up to 50 h. Based on the experimental results and density functional calculations, this significant improvement in OER performance to the synergistic effect of large specific surface area and modulated electronic structure resulting from the doping of Te cations is attributed.

Engineering High-Spin State Cobalt Cations in Sulfide Spinel for Enhancing Water Oxidation

The spin states of active sites have a significant impact on the adsorption/desorption ability of the reaction intermediates during the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Sulfide spinel is not generally considered a highly efficient OER catalyst owing to the low spin state of Co3+ and the lack of unpaired electrons available for adsorption of reaction intermediates. Herein, it is proposed a novel Nd-evoked valence electronic adjustment strategy to engineer the spin state of Co ions. The unique f-p-d orbital electronic coupling effect stimulates the rearrangement of Co d orbital electrons and increases the eg electron filling to achieve high-spin state Co ions, which promotes charge transport by propagating a spin channel and generates a high number of active sites for intermediate adsorption. The optimized CuCo1.75 Nd0.25 S4 catalyst exhibits outstanding electrocatalytic properties with a low overpotential of 320 mV at 500 mA cm-2 and a 48 h stability at 300 mA cm-2 . In situ synchrotron radiation infrared spectra confirm the quick accumulation of key *OOH and *O intermediates. This work deepens the comprehensive understanding of the relationship between OER activity and spin configurations of Co ions and offers a new design strategy for spinel compound catalysts.

The Promising Seesaw Relationship Between Activity and Stability of Ru-Based Electrocatalysts for Acid Oxygen Evolution and Proton Exchange Membrane Water Electrolysis

The development of electrocatalysts that are not reliant on iridium for efficient acid-oxygen evolution is a critical step towards the proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) and green hydrogen industry. Ruthenium-based electrocatalysts have garnered widespread attention due to their remarkable catalytic activity and lower commercial price. However, the challenge lies in balancing the seesaw relationship between activity and stability of these electrocatalysts during the acid-oxygen evolution reaction (OER). This review delves into the progress made in Ru-based electrocatalysts with regards to acid OER and PEMWE applications. It highlights the significance of customizing the acidic OER mechanism of Ru-based electrocatalysts through the coordination of adsorption evolution mechanism (AEM) and lattice oxygen oxidation mechanism (LOM) to attain the ideal activity and stability relationship. The promising tradeoffs between the activity and stability of different Ru-based electrocatalysts, including Ru metals and alloys, Ru single-atomic materials, Ru oxides, and derived complexes, and Ru-based heterojunctions, as well as their applicability to PEMWE systems, are discussed in detail. Furthermore, this paper offers insights on in situ control of Ru active sites, dynamic catalytic mechanism, and commercial application of PEMWE. Based on three-way relationship between cost, activity, and stability, the perspectives and development are provided.

Acidic CO2 electroreduction for high CO2 utilization: catalysts, electrodes, and electrolyzers

The electrochemical carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction reaction (CO2RR) is considered a promising technology for converting atmospheric CO2 into value-added compounds by utilizing renewable energy. The CO2RR has developed in various ways over the past few decades, including product selectivity, current density, and catalytic stability. However, its commercialization is still unsuitable in terms of economic feasibility. One of the major challenges in its commercialization is the low single-pass conversion efficiency (SPCE) of CO2, which is primarily caused by the formation of carbonate (CO32-) in neutral and alkaline electrolytes. Notably, the majority of CO2RRs take place in such media, necessitating significant energy input for CO2 regeneration. Therefore, performing the CO2RR under conditions that minimize CO32- formation to suppress reactant and electrolyte ion loss is regarded an optimal strategy for practical applications. Here, we introduce the recent progress and perspectives in the electrochemical CO2RR in acidic electrolytes, which receives great attention because of the inhibition of CO32- formation. This includes the categories of nanoscale catalytic design, microscale microenvironmental effects, and bulk scale applications in electrolyzers for zero carbon loss reactions. Additionally, we offer insights into the issue of limited catalytic durability, a notable drawback under acidic conditions and propose guidelines for further development of the acidic CO2RR.

RuO2 Catalysts for Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution in Acidic Media: Mechanism, Activity Promotion Strategy and Research Progress

Proton Exchange Membrane Water Electrolysis (PEMWE) under acidic conditions outperforms alkaline water electrolysis in terms of less resistance loss, higher current density, and higher produced hydrogen purity, which make it more economical in long-term applications. However, the efficiency of PEMWE is severely limited by the slow kinetics of anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER), poor catalyst stability, and high cost. Therefore, researchers in the past decade have made great efforts to explore cheap, efficient, and stable electrode materials. Among them, the RuO2 electrocatalyst has been proved to be a major promising alternative to Ir-based catalysts and the most promising OER catalyst owing to its excellent electrocatalytic activity and high pH adaptability. In this review, we elaborate two reaction mechanisms of OER (lattice oxygen mechanism and adsorbate evolution mechanism), comprehensively summarize and discuss the recently reported RuO2-based OER electrocatalysts under acidic conditions, and propose many advanced modification strategies to further improve the activity and stability of RuO2-based electrocatalytic OER. Finally, we provide suggestions for overcoming the challenges faced by RuO2 electrocatalysts in practical applications and make prospects for future research. This review provides perspectives and guidance for the rational design of highly active and stable acidic OER electrocatalysts based on PEMWE.

Boosting electrocatalytic performance via electronic structure regulation for acidic oxygen evolution

High-purity hydrogen produced by water electrolysis has become a sustainable energy carrier. Due to the corrosive environments and strong oxidizing working conditions, the main challenge faced by acidic water oxidation is the decrease in the activity and stability of anodic electrocatalysts. To address this issue, efficient strategies have been developed to design electrocatalysts toward acidic OER with excellent intrinsic performance. Electronic structure modification achieved through defect engineering, doping, alloying, atomic arrangement, surface reconstruction, and constructing metal-support interactions provides an effective means to boost OER. Based on introducing OER mechanism commonly present in acidic environments, this review comprehensively summarizes the effective strategies for regulating the electronic structure to boost the activity and stability of catalytic materials. Finally, several promising research directions are discussed to inspire the design and synthesis of high-performance acidic OER electrocatalysts.

Self-Supporting Mn-RuO2 Nanoarrays for Stable Oxygen Evolution Reaction in Acid

Currently, the process of an acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) necessitates the use of Iridium dioxygen (IrO2), which is both expensive and incredibly scarce on Earth. Ruthenium dioxygen (RuO2) offers high activity for acidic OERs and presents a potential substitution for IrO2. Nevertheless, its practical application is hindered by its relatively poor stability. In this study, we have developed Mn-doped RuO2 (Mn-RuO2) nanoarrays that are anchored on a titanium (Ti) mesh utilizing a two-step methodology involving the preparation of MnO2 nanoarrays followed by a subsequent Ru exchange and annealing process. By precisely optimizing the annealing temperature, we have managed to attain a remarkably low overpotential of 217 mV at 10 mA cm-2 in a 0.5 M H2SO4 solution. The enhanced catalytic activity of our Mn-RuO2 nanoarrays can be attributed to the electronic modification brought about by the high exposure of active sites, Mn dopant, efficient mass transfer, as well as the efficient transfer of electrons between the Ti mesh and the catalyst arrays. Furthermore, these self-supported Mn-RuO2 nanoarrays demonstrated excellent long-term stability throughout a chronoamperometry test lasting for 100 h, with no discernible changes observed in the Ru chemical states.

Valence Oscillation of Ru Active Sites for Efficient and Robust Acidic Water Oxidation

The continuous oxidation and leachability of active sites in Ru-based catalysts hinder practical application in proton-exchange membrane water electrolyzers (PEMWE). Herein, robust inter-doped tungsten-ruthenium oxide heterostructures [(Ru-W)Ox ] fabricated by sequential rapid oxidation and metal thermomigration processes are proposed to enhance the activity and stability of acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The introduction of high-valent W species induces the valence oscillation of the Ru sites during OER, facilitating the cyclic transition of the active metal oxidation states and maintaining the continuous operation of the active sites. The preferential oxidation of W species and electronic gain of Ru sites in the inter-doped heterostructure significantly stabilize RuOx on WOx substrates beyond the Pourbaix stability limit of bare RuO2 . Furthermore, the asymmetric Ru-O-W active units are generated around the heterostructure interface to adsorb the oxygen intermediates synergistically, enhancing the intrinsic OER activity. Consequently, the inter-doped (Ru-W)Ox heterostructures not only demonstrate an overpotential of 170 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and excellent stability of 300 h in acidic electrolytes but also exhibit the potential for practical applications, as evidenced by the stable operation at 0.5 A cm-2 for 300 h in PEMWE.
