Abstract
A facile and convenient protocol for the regioselective construction of functionalized 2-hydroxybenzophenones is described. This protocol involves the Sc(OTf)3/BF3·OEt2-catalyzed benzannulation of 2-vinyloxirans with 3-formylchromone, which involves cascade in situ diene formation, [4 + 2] cycloaddition, elimination, and ring-opening strategies. Moreover, it provides an expedited synthetic pathway to access biologically intriguing 1,4-naphthoquinones and anthraquinones including vitamin K3 and tectoquinone. The synthesized compounds also hold potential for use as UV filters and show promise as chemosensors for Cu2+ and Mg2+ ions.

Abstract
A square-planar [CuIIL] complex 1, based on the redox-active phenalenyl unit LH2 = 9,9'-(ethane-1,2-diylbis(azanediyl))bis(1H-phenalen-1-one), is prepared and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Complex 1 crystallizes at room temperature with the P1 space group. The molecular structure of 1 reveals the presence of intriguing C-H···Cu intermolecular anagostic interactions of the order ∼2.7715 Å. Utilizing the presence of anagostic interactions and the free nonbonding molecular orbitals (NBMOs) of the closed-shell phenalenyl unit in 1, the oxidation reactions of some industrially important polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the presence of the [CuIIL] complex under very mild conditions have been reported. The direct conversion of anthracene-9-carbaldehyde to 9,10-anthraquinone in one step concludes that the catalyst shows dual activity in the chemical transformations. This also includes the first report of a "single-step" catalytic transformation of pyrene-1-carbaldehyde to the synthetically difficult pyren-4-ol, a precursor for the synthesis of several novel fluorescent probes for cell imaging.

Abstract
Developing highly efficient catalyst systems for phenol-quinone transformation is of great significance in the chemical/biological industries. Herein, we reported a novel heterogenous catalytic system based on Co(Salphen) supramolecular polymers (CSP), which delivered an excellent catalytic performance in the oxidation of 2,3,6-trimethylphenol (TMP) under mild conditions. The CSP were constructed through a simple self-assembled process between BiCo(Salphen) complex and 4,4-dipyridine. By applying BiCo-BiPy1:1 CSP as the catalyst, 2,3,5-trimethyl-1,4-benzoquinone (TMBQ) could be obtained with an excellent conversion (>99%) and selectivity over 99% under mild reaction conditions (30 °C, 0.1 MPa). In addition, it can be recycled at least five times without substantial decline in catalytic activities (conversion and selectivity), suggesting its excellent stability and recyclability. This work may provide guidance on designing and building valuable catalysts for environmentally friendly and cost-effective oxidation reactions.

Abstract
Two (ONO pincer)ruthenium-complex-bound norvalines, Boc-[Ru(pydc)(terpy)]Nva-OMe (1; Boc=tert-butyloxycarbonyl, terpy=terpyridyl, Nva=norvaline) and Boc-[Ru(pydc)(tBu-terpy)]Nva-OMe (5), were successfully synthesized and their molecular structures and absolute configurations were unequivocally determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The robustness of the pincer Ru complexes and norvaline scaffolds against acidic/basic, oxidizing, and high-temperature conditions enabled us to perform selective transformations of the N-Boc and C-OMe termini into various functional groups, such as alkyl amide, alkyl urea, and polyether groups, without the loss of the Ru center or enantiomeric purity. The resulting dialkylated Ru-bound norvaline, n-C11 H23 CO-l-[Ru(pydc)(terpy)]Nva-NH-n-C11 H23 (l-4) was found to have excellent self-assembly properties in organic solvents, thereby affording the corresponding supramolecular gels. Ru-bound norvaline l-1 exhibited a higher catalytic activity for the oxidation of alcohols by H2 O2 than parent complex [Ru(pydc)(terpy)] (11 a).
