Ultrathin, Transparent, and High Density Perovskite Scintillator Film for High Resolution X-Ray Microscopic Imaging

Zero-Dimensional Copper(I) Halide Microcrystals as Highly Efficient Scintillators for Flexible X-ray Imaging

Commercially available rare-earth-doped inorganic oxide materials have been widely applied as X-ray scintillators, but the fragile characteristics, high detection limit, and harsh preparation condition seriously restrict their wide applications. Furthermore, it remains a huge challenge to realize X-ray flexible imaging technology for real-time monitoring of the curving interface of complex devices. To address these issues, we herein report two isostructural cuprous halides of zero-dimensional (0D) [AEPipz]CuX3·X·H2O (AEPipz = N-aminoethylpiperazine, X = Br and I) with controllable size to nanosize crystal as highly efficient scintillators toward flexible X-ray imaging. These cuprous halides exhibit highly efficient cyan photoluminescence and radioluminescence emissions with the highest quantum yield of 92.1% and light yield of 62,400 photons MeV-1, respectively, surpassing most of the commercially available inorganic scintillators. Meanwhile, the ultralow detection limit of 95.7 nGyair s-1 was far below the X-ray dose required for diagnosis (5.5 μGyair s-1). More significantly, the flexible film is facilely assembled with excellent foldability and high crack resistance, which further acts as a scintillation screen achieving a high spatial resolution of 17.4 lp mm-1 in X-ray imaging, demonstrating the potential application in wearable radiation radiography. The combined advantages of high light yield, low detection limit, and excellent flexibility promote these 0D cuprous halides as the most promising X-ray scintillators.

Recent Advances in Fast-Decaying Metal Halide Perovskites Scintillators

Fast-decaying scintillators show subnanoseconds or nanoseconds lifetime and high time resolution, making them important in nuclear physics, medical diagnostics, scientific research, and other fields. Metal halide perovskites (MHPs) show great potential for scintillator applications owing to their easy synthesis procedure and attractive optical properties. However, MHPs scintillators still need further improvement in decay lifetime. To optimize the decay lifetime, great progress has been achieved recently. In this Perspective, we first summarize the structural characteristics of MHPs in various dimensions, which brings different exciton behaviors. Then, recent advances in designing fast-decaying MHPs according to different exciton behaviors have been concluded, focusing on the photophysical mechanisms to achieve fast-decaying lifetimes. These advancements in decay lifetimes could facilitate the MHPs scintillators in advanced applications, such as time-of-flight positron emission tomography (TOF-PET), photon-counting computed tomography (PCCT), etc. Finally, the challenges and future opportunities are discussed to provide a roadmap for designing novel fast-decaying MHPs scintillators.

Controlled Synthesis of Terbium-Doped Colloidal Gd2O2S Nanoplatelets Enables High-Performance X-ray Scintillators

Terbium-doped gadolinium oxysulfide (Gd2O2S:Tb3+), commonly referred to as Gadox, is a widely used scintillator material due to its exceptional X-ray attenuation efficiency and high light yield. However, Gadox-based scintillators suffer from low X-ray spatial resolution due to their large particle size, which causes significant light scattering. To address this limitation, we report the synthesis of terbium-doped colloidal Gadox nanoplatelets (NPLs) with near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and high radioluminescence light yield (LY). In particular, our investigation reveals a strong correlation between PLQY, LY, particle size, and Tb3+concentration. Our synthetic approach allows precise control over the lateral size and thickness of the Gadox NPLs, resulting in a LY of 50,000 photons/MeV. Flexible scintillating screens fabricated with the solution-processable Gadox NPLs exhibited a 20 lp/mm X-ray spatial resolution, surpassing commercial Gadox scintillators. These high-performance and flexible Gadox NPL-based scintillators enable enhanced X-ray imaging capabilities in medicine and security. Our work provides a framework for designing nanomaterial scintillators with superior spatial resolution and efficiency through precise control of dimensions and dopant concentration.

The Nanoplasmonic Purcell Effect in Ultrafast and High-Light-Yield Perovskite Scintillators

The development of X-ray scintillators with ultrahigh light yields and ultrafast response times is a long sought-after goal. In this work, a fundamental mechanism that pushes the frontiers of ultrafast X-ray scintillator performance is theoretically predicted and experimentally demonstrated: the use of nanoscale-confined surface plasmon polariton modes to tailor the scintillator response time via the Purcell effect. By incorporating nanoplasmonic materials in scintillator devices, this work predicts over tenfold enhancement in decay rate and 38% reduction in time resolution even with only a simple planar design. The nanoplasmonic Purcell effect is experimentally demonstrated using perovskite scintillators, enhancing the light yield by over 120% to 88 ± 11 ph/keV, and the decay rate by over 60% to 2.0 ± 0.2 ns for the average decay time, and 0.7 ± 0.1 ns for the ultrafast decay component, in good agreement with the predictions of our theoretical framework. Proof-of-concept X-ray imaging experiments are performed using nanoplasmonic scintillators, demonstrating 182% enhancement in the modulation transfer function at four line pairs per millimeter spatial frequency. This work highlights the enormous potential of nanoplasmonics in optimizing ultrafast scintillator devices for applications including time-of-flight X-ray imaging and photon-counting computed tomography.

Cs2NaGdCl6:Tb3+─A Highly Luminescent Rare-Earth Double Perovskite Scintillator for Low-Dose X-ray Detection and Imaging

Rare-earth-based double perovskite (DP) X-ray scintillators have gained significant importance with low detection limits in medical imaging and radiation detection owing to their high light yield (LY) and remarkable spatial resolution. Herein, we report the synthesis of 3D double perovskite (DP) crystals, namely, Cs2NaGdCl6 and Tb3+-Cs2NaGdCl6 using hydrothermal reaction. Cs2NaGdCl6 DP single crystals exhibited a blue self-trapped exciton (STE) emission at 470 nm under ultraviolet (265 nm) excitation with a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 8.4%. Introducing Tb3+ ions into Cs2NaGdCl6 has resulted in quenching of STE emission and enhancing green emission at 549 nm attributed to the 5D4 → 7F5 transition of Tb3+, suggesting efficient energy transfer (ET) from STE to Tb3+. This ET process is evidenced by the appearance of Tb3+ bands in the excitation spectra of the host, the shortening of the STE lifetimes in the presence of Tb3+ ions, and the enhancement of PLQY (72.6%). Furthermore, Cs2NaGdCl6:5%Tb3+ films of various thicknesses (0.1-0.6 mm) were synthesized and their X-ray scintillating performance has been examined. The Cs2NaGdCl6:5%Tb3+ film with 0.4 mm thickness has exhibited an excellent linear response to the X-ray dose rate with a low detection limit of 41.32 nGyair s-1, an LY of 39,100 photons MeV-1, and excellent radiation stability. Benefiting from the strong X-ray excited luminescence (XEL) of Cs2NaGdCl6:5%Tb3+, we developed a Cs2NaGdCl6:5%Tb3+ X-ray scintillator screen with a least thickness (0.1 mm), exhibiting remarkable imaging ability with a spatial resolution of 10.75 lp mm-1. These results suggest that Cs2NaGdCl6:Tb3+ can be a potential candidate for low-dose and X-ray imaging applications.

Water-dispersible X-ray scintillators enabling coating and blending with polymer materials for multiple applications

Developing X-ray scintillators that are water-dispersible, compatible with polymeric matrices, and processable to flexible substrates is an important challenge. Herein, Tb3+-doped Na5Lu9F32 is introduced as an X-ray scintillating material with steady-state X-ray light yields of 15,800 photons MeV-1, which is generated as nanocrystals on halloysite nanotubes. The obtained product exhibits good water-dispersibility and highly sensitive luminescence to X-rays. It is deposited onto a polyurethane foam to afford a composite foam material with dose-dependent radioluminescence. Moreover, the product is dispersed into polymer matrixes in aqueous solution to prepare rigid or flexible scintillator screen for X-ray imaging. As a third example, it is incorporated multilayer hydrogels for information camouflage and multilevel encryption. Encrypted information can be recognized only by X-ray irradiation, while the false information is read out under UV light. Altogether, we demonstrate that the water-dispersible scintillators are highly promising for aqueous processing of radioluminescent, X-ray imaging, and information encrypting materials.

Light Management of Metal Halide Scintillators for High-Resolution X-Ray Imaging

The ever-growing need to inspect matter with hyperfine structures requires a revolution in current scintillation detectors, and the innovation of scintillators is revived with luminescent metal halides entering the scene. Notably, for any scintillator, two fundamental issues arise: Which kind of material is suitable and in what form should the material exist? The answer to the former question involves the sequence of certain atoms into specific crystal structures that facilitate the conversion of X-ray into light, whereas the answer to the latter involves assembling these crystallites into particular material forms that can guide light propagation toward its corresponding pixel detector. Despite their equal importance, efforts are overwhelmingly devoted to improving the X-ray-to-light conversion, while the material-form-associated light propagation, which determines the optical signal collected for X-ray imaging, is largely overlooked. This perspective critically correlates the reported spatial resolution with the light-propagation behavior in each form of metal halides, combing the designing rules for their future development.

Lung Toxicity and Molecular Mechanisms of Lead-Based Perovskite Nanoparticles in the Respiratory System

Lead-based perovskite nanoparticles (Pb-PNPs) have found extensive applications across diverse fields. However, because of poor stability and relatively strong water solubility, the potential toxicity of Pb-PNPs released into the environment during their manufacture, usage, and disposal has attracted significant attention. Inhalation is a primary route through which human exposure to Pb-PNPs occurs. Herein, the toxic effects and underlying molecular mechanisms of Pb-PNPs in the respiratory system are investigated. The in vitro cytotoxicity of CsPbBr3 nanoparticles in BEAS-2B cells is studied using multiple bioassays and electron microscopy. CsPbBr3 nanoparticles of different concentrations induce excessive oxidative stress and cell apoptosis. Furthermore, CsPbBr3 nanoparticles specifically recruit the TGF-β1, which subsequently induces epithelial-mesenchymal transition. In addition, the biodistribution and lung toxicity of representative CsPbBr3 nanoparticles in ICR mice are investigated following intranasal administration. These findings indicate that CsPbBr3 nanoparticles significantly induce pulmonary inflammation and epithelial-mesenchymal transition and can even lead to pulmonary fibrosis in mouse models. Above findings expose the adverse effects and molecular mechanisms of Pb-PNPs in the lung, which broadens the safety data of Pb-PNPs.

High-Quality Cs3Cu2I5@PMMA Scintillator Films Assisted by Multiprocessing for X-ray Imaging

In recent years, novel metal halide scintillators have shown great application potential due to their tunable emission wavelength, high X-ray absorption, and high luminescence efficiency. However, poor stability and complex device packaging remain key issues for metal halide scintillators, making it difficult to achieve high-resolution and flexible X-ray imaging applications. To address the above issues, a multiprocessing strategy was introduced to prepare Cs3Cu2I5@PMMA scintillator films for long-term stable application, mainly undergo different annealing treatments to make Cs3Cu2I5 crystals to accurately nucleate and then grow in-situ in the PMMA matrix. Then, a series of characterization results illustrate that the prepared Cs3Cu2I5@PMMA scintillator films have high crystallinity, uniform size, excellent flexibility, high stable photoluminescence (PL) and radioluminescence (RL) performance, and high-resolution X-ray imaging capability. Most importantly, Cs3Cu2I5@PMMA scintillator films can not only provide clear and accurate imaging recognition of objects with different complex structures but also maintain stable X-ray imaging quality within 60 days and can achieve flexible X-ray imaging. Therefore, we have provided an effective strategy for producing high-quality scintillator films to meet the multidimensional needs of a new generation of scintillators.

Radioluminescent Cu-Au Metal Nanoclusters: Synthesis and Self-Assembly for Efficient X-ray Scintillation and Imaging

Zero-dimensional (0D) scintillation materials have drawn tremendous attention due to their inherent advantages in the fabrication of flexible high-energy radiation scintillation screens by solution processes. Although considerable progress has been made in the development of 0D scintillators, such as the current leading lead-halide perovskite nanocrystals and quantum dots, challenges still persist, including potential issues with self-absorption, air stability, and eco-friendliness. Here, we present a strategy to overcome those limitations by synthesis and self-assembly of a new class of scintillators based on metal nanoclusters. We demonstrate the gram-scale synthesis of an atomically precise nanocluster with a Cu-Au alloy core exhibiting high phosphorescence quantum yield, aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) behavior, and intense radioluminescence. By controlling solvent interactions, the AIEE-active nanoclusters were self-assembled into submicron spherical superparticles in solution, which we exploited as a novel building block for flexible particle-deposited scintillation films with high-resolution X-ray imaging performance. This work reveals metal nanoclusters and their self-assembled superstructures as a promising class of scintillators for practical applications in high-energy radiation detection and imaging.

Study on myocardial toxicity induced by lead halide perovskites nanoparticles

Lead halide perovskites (LHPs) are outstanding candidates for next-generation optoelectronic materials, with considerable prospects of use and commercial value. However, knowledge about their toxicity is scarce, which may limit their commercialization. Here, for the first time, we studied the cardiotoxicity and molecular mechanisms of representative CsPbBr3 nanoparticles in LHPs. After their intranasal administration to Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) mice, using advanced synchrotron radiation, mass spectrometry, and ultrasound imaging, we revealed that CsPbBr3 nanoparticles can severely affect cardiac systolic function by accumulating in the myocardial tissue. RNA sequencing and Western blotting demonstrated that CsPbBr3 nanoparticles induced excessive oxidative stress in cardiomyocytes, thereby provoking endoplasmic reticulum stress, disturbing calcium homeostasis, and ultimately leading to apoptosis. Our findings highlight the cardiotoxic effects of LHPs and provide crucial toxicological data for the product.

Flexible and Transparent Ceramic Nanocomposite for Laboratory X-ray Imaging of Micrometer Resolution

Transparent nanocomposites have attracted considerable attention in many areas including X-ray imaging, wearable electronics, and volumetric display. However, both the transparency and the flexibility were largely jeopardized by the loading content of functional nanoparticles (NPs), posing a major challenge to material engineering. Herein, an ultra-high-loading-ceramic nanocomposite film was fabricated by a blade-coating technique. The film exhibited a high transparency over ∼89% in the whole visible region even with a fluoride-ceramic content up to ∼83 wt %. Based on a real-time investigation on the formation process of the film, the refractive-index difference between the nanoparticles and matrix was identified as the dominating factor to transparency. The transmittance spectra based on Rayleigh scattering theory were simulated to screen both nanoparticle radius and loading content, leading to the discovery of a transparency zone for film making. As a proof-of-concept experiment, the transparent film was used as an X-ray scintillation screen, which exhibited a comparable light yield to that of LYSO owing to the mitigated self-absorption effect. The homemade imager demonstrated a spatial resolution of 122 lp/mm, representing a record resolution of 4.1 μm for laboratory X-ray photography. Our work not only provided an experimental procedure to make high-loading functional films but also demonstrated a theoretical model to guide the search for gradients of transparent composites.

Halide Perovskite: A Promising Candidate for Next-Generation X-Ray Detectors

In the past decade, metal halide perovskite (HP) has become a superstar semiconductor material due to its great application potential in the photovoltaic and photoelectric fields. In fact, HP initially attracted worldwide attention because of its excellent photovoltaic efficiency. However, HP and its derivatives also show great promise in X-ray detection due to their strong X-ray absorption, high bulk resistivity, suitable optical bandgap, and compatibility with integrated circuits. In this review, the basic working principles and modes of both the direct-type and the indirect-type X-ray detectors are first summarized before discussing the applicability of HP for these two types of detection based on the pros and cons of different perovskites. Furthermore, the authors expand their view to different preparation methods developed for HP including single crystals and polycrystalline materials. Upon systematically analyzing their potential for X-ray detection and photoelectronic characteristics on the basis of different structures and dimensions (0D, 2D, and 3D), recent progress of HPs (mainly polycrystalline) applied to flexible X-ray detection are reviewed, and their practicability and feasibility are discussed. Finally, by reviewing the current research on HP-based X-ray detection, the challenges in this field are identified, and the main directions and prospects of future research are suggested.

Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Zirconium-Based Perovskites for Large-Area and Ultraflexible X-ray Scintillator Screens

Flexible scintillator screens with environmental stability, high sensitivity, and low cost have emerged as candidates for X-ray imaging applications. Here, a large-scale and cost-efficient solution synthesis of the vacancy-ordered double perovskite Cs₂ ZrCl₆ , which is characterized by thermal activation delayed fluorescence (TADF) dominated by triplet emission under X-ray irradiation, is demonstrated. The large Stokes shift and efficient luminescence collection of TADF effectively ensure the light outcoupling efficiency. Further, flexible X-ray scintillator screens with an area of 400 cm² are prepared using poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) as the carrier, exhibiting excellent scintillation properties with light yields as high as 49 400 photons MeV^-1 , spatial resolutions up to 18 lp mm^-1 and detection limits as low as 65 nGy s^-1 . Finally, the high-quality imaging results of non-planar and dynamic objects by such screens are demonstrated. It is believed that the explored Cs₂ ZrCl₆ @PDMS flexible scintillator screens would offer a big step toward expanding the application range of scintillators in different environments.

Competing Energy Transfer-Modulated Dual Emission in Mn2+-Doped Cs2NaTbCl6 Rare-Earth Double Perovskites

A₂B^IB^IIIX₆ double perovskites are promising materials due to their outstanding photoelectronic properties and excellent stability in the environment. Herein, we synthesized Mn²⁺:Cs₂NaTbCl₆ with dual emission through a solvothermal method for the first time. Mn²⁺:Cs₂NaTbCl₆ double perovskites exhibit excellent environmental stability and high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs). The Cs₂NaTbCl₆ was successfully doped with Mn²⁺ in two modes: at Mn-feeding concentrations below 1%, Mn²⁺ first tend to insert into the interstitial void, but if the Mn-feeding concentration exceeds 1%, Mn²⁺ will further substitute Na⁺ site of the Cs₂NaTbCl₆ lattice and thus both two doping modes coexist. After Mn²⁺ doping, efficient energy transfer from the ⁵D₄ level of Tb³⁺ ions to the ⁴T₁ level of Mn²⁺ ions occurs, resulting in tunable dual emission from the Tb³⁺⁵D₄ → ⁷F_J=6,5,4,3 transition and Mn²⁺⁴T₁ → ⁶A₁ transition. Further, LED based on the Mn²⁺:Cs₂NaTbCl₆ double perovskites exhibits excellent performance and stability. This work demonstrates a strategy to achieve novel lanthanide-based double perovskites with potential applications in photonics.

Micrometer-Resolution X-ray Imaging Enabled by a Flexible Perovskite Screen

Spatial resolution improvement has been keenly sought recently in the perovskite-based scintillation community. Here, micrometer resolution (∼2.0 μm) was achieved by using an X-ray imaging screen of self-assembled perovskite nanosheets. The assembly behavior of nanosheets was applicable to many substrates, including glass, metal, and polymer surfaces. The use of a polymer substrate not only eliminated the parasite absorption of X-ray but also enabled a flexible screen with robust bending stability. The assembly behavior, on the other hand, provided vicinity for an efficient energy transfer between nanosheets of varied thicknesses, as evidenced by both transient absorption and photoluminescence lifetime measurements. Importantly, the ensuing large Stokes shift (∼316 meV) significantly mitigated the reabsorption issue, leading to a comparable light yield to LYSO/Ce crystals. With the aid of the synchrotron-based collimated X-ray beam, the fine structure of two-dimensional objects, such as microchips, was clearly visualized with the flexible scintillation screen. Furthermore, those challenging biological samples were also scanned by phase-contrast imaging, whereby a three-dimensional reconstruction was obtained successfully. Despite the labile nature of the perovskite screen, this work represents the state-of-the-art spatial resolution for perovskite scintillation.
