Regiochemistry of Donor Dendrons Controls the Performance of Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Dendrimer Emitters for High Efficiency Solution-Processed Organic Light-Emitting Diodes

Regioisomerism vs Conformation: Impact of Molecular Design on the Emission Pathway in Organic Light-Emitting Device Emitters

Despite the design and proposal of several new structural motifs as thermally activated delayed fluorescent (TADF) emitters for organic light-emitting device (OLED) applications, the nature of their interaction with the host matrix in the emissive layer of the device and their influence on observed photophysical outputs remain unclear. To address this issue, we present, for the first time, the use of up to four regioisomers bearing a donor-acceptor-donor electronic structure based on the desymmetrized naphthalene benzimidazole scaffold, equipped with various electron-donating units and possessing distinguished conformational lability. Quantum chemical calculations allow us to identify the most favorable conformations adopted by the electron-rich groups across the entire pool of regioisomers. These conformations were then compared with conformational changes caused by the interaction of the emitter with the Zeonex and 4,4'-bis(N-carbazolyl)-1,1'-biphenyl (CBP) matrices, and the correlation with observed photophysics was monitored by UV-vis absorption and steady-state photoluminescence spectra, combined with time-resolved spectroscopic techniques. Importantly, a CBP matrix was found to have a significant impact on the conformational change of regioisomers, leading to unique TADF emission mechanisms that encompass dual emission and inversion of the singlet-triplet excited-state energies and result in the enhancement of TADF efficiency. As a proof of concept, regioisomers with optimal donor positions were utilized to fabricate an OLED, revealing, with the best-performing dye, an external quantum emission of 11.6%, accompanied by remarkable luminance (28,000 cd/m2). These observations lay the groundwork for a better understanding of the role of the host matrix. In the long term, this new knowledge can lead to predicting the influence of the host matrix and adopting the structure of the emitter in a way that allows the development of highly efficient and efficient OLEDs.

Dibenzodipyridophenazines with Dendritic Electron Donors Exhibiting Deep-Red Emission and Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence

The development of deep-red thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters is important for applications such as organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) and biological imaging. Design strategies for red-shifting emission include synthesizing rigid acceptor cores to limit nonradiative decay and employing strong electron-donating groups. In this work, three novel luminescent donor-acceptor compounds based on the dibenzo[a,c]dipyrido[3,2-h:20-30-j]-phenazine-12-yl (BPPZ) acceptor were prepared using dendritic carbazole-based donors 3,3″,6,6″-tetramethoxy-9'H-9,3':6',9″-tercarbazole (TMTC), N³,N³,N⁶,N⁶-tetra-p-tolyl-9H-carbazole-3,6-diamine (TTAC), and N³,N³,N⁶,N⁶-tetrakis(4-methoxyphenyl)-9H-carbazole-3,6-diamine (TMAC). Here, dimethoxycarbazole, ditolylamine, and bis(4-methoxyphenyl)amine were introduced at the 3,6-positions of carbazole to increase the strength of these donors and induce long-wavelength emission. Substituent effects were investigated with experiments and theoretical calculations. The emission maxima of these materials in toluene were found to be 562, 658, and 680 nm for BPPZ-2TMTC, BPPZ-2TTAC, and BPPZ-2TMAC, respectively, highlighting the exceptional strength of the TMAC donor, which pushes the emission into the deep-red region of the visible spectrum as well as into the biological transparency window (650-1350 nm). Long-lived emission lifetimes were observed in each emitter due to TADF in BPPZ-2TMC and BPPZ-2TTAC, as well as room-temperature phosphorescence in BPPZ-2TMAC. Overall, this work showcases deep-red emissive dendritic donor-acceptor materials which have potential as bioimaging agents with emission in the biological transparency window.

V-shaped donor-acceptor organic emitters. A new approach towards efficient TADF OLED devices

We report the synthesis and characterization of a series of donor-acceptor TADF emitters with a new architecture, where the donor moiety and the dibenzazepine-based acceptor moiety are separated by a phenylene linker in a V-shaped spatial arrangement. Such spatial separation and electronic decoupling between the donor and the acceptor moieties leads to low singlet-triplet energy gaps and favors efficient exciton up-conversion.

Structure and Conformational Mobility of OLED-Relevant 1,3,5-Triazine Derivatives

A series of OLED-relevant compounds, consisting of 1,3,5-triazine core linked to various aromatic arms by amino group, has been synthesized and characterized. The studied compounds exist in solution as a mixture of two conformers, a symmetric propeller and asymmetric conformer, in which one of the aromatic arms is rotated around the C-N bond. At temperatures below -40 °C, the VT NMR spectra in DMF-d7 are in a slow exchange regime, and the signals of two conformers can be elucidated. At temperatures above 100 °C, the VT NMR spectra in DMSO-d6 are in a fast exchange regime, and the averaged spectra can be measured. The ratio of symmetric and asymmetric conformers in DMF-d7 varies from 14:86 to 50:50 depending on the substituents. The rotational barriers of symmetric and asymmetric conformers in DMF-d7 were measured for all compounds and are in the interval from 11.7 to 14.7 kcal/mol. The ground-state energy landscapes of the studied compounds, obtained by DFT calculations, show good agreement with the experimental rotational barriers. The DFT calculations reveal that the observed chemical exchange occurs by the rotation around the C(1,3,5-triazine)-N bond. Although some of the compounds are potentially tautomeric, the measured absorption and emission spectra do not indicate proton transfer neither in the ground nor in the excited state.

Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescent Dendrimers that Underpin High-Efficiency Host-Free Solution-Processed Organic Light-Emitting Diodes

The development of high-performance solution-processed organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) remains a challenge. An effective solution, highlighted in this work, is to use highly efficient thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) dendrimers as emitters. Here, the design, synthesis, density functional theory (DFT) modeling, and photophysics of three triazine-based dendrimers, tBuCz2pTRZ, tBuCz2mTRZ, and tBuCz2m2pTRZ, is reported, which resolve the conflicting requirements of achieving simultaneously a small ΔE_ST and a large oscillator strength by incorporating both meta- and para-connected donor dendrons about a central triazine acceptor. The solution-processed OLED containing a host-free emitting layer exhibits an excellent maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE_max ) of 28.7%, a current efficiency of 98.8 cd A^-1 , and a power efficiency of 91.3 lm W^-1 . The device emits with an electroluminescence maximum, λ_EL , of 540 nm and Commission International de l'Éclairage (CIE) color coordinates of (0.37, 0.57). This represents the most efficient host-free solution-processed OLED reported to date. Further optimization directed at improving the charge balance within the device results in an emissive layer containing 30 wt% OXD-7, which leads to an OLED with the similar EQE_max of 28.4% but showing a significantly improved efficiency rolloff where the EQE remains high at 22.7% at a luminance of 500 cd m^-2 .
