Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Cuprous-Based Metal Halides for Warm White Light-Emitting Diodes

One-dimensional hybrid copper halides with high-efficiency photoluminescence as scintillator

A new one-dimensional hybrid [APCHA]Cu2I4 was designed and applied as an X-ray scintillator. It exhibits broad-band green emission with a high PLQY of 74.80% and excellent stability. It demonstrates radioluminescence property with a light yield of 28 336 photons MeV-1, detection limit of 41 nGyair s-1, and high spatial limit of 13.95 lp mm-1 in X-ray imaging.

Unlocking the Potential of Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Manganese Halides for Advanced Optoelectronic Applications

Organic-inorganic hybrid manganese(II) halides (OIMnHs) have garnered tremendous interest across a wide array of research fields owing to their outstanding optical properties, abundant structural diversity, low-cost solution processibility, and low toxicity, which make them extremely suitable for use as a new class of luminescent materials for various optoelectronic applications. Over the past years, a plethora of OIMnHs with different structural dimensionalities and multifunctionalities such as efficient photoluminescence (PL), radioluminescence, circularly polarized luminescence, and mechanoluminescence have been newly created by judicious screening of the organic cations and inorganic Mn(II) polyhedra. Specifically, through precise molecular and structural engineering, a series of OIMnHs with near-unity PL quantum yields, high anti-thermal quenching properties, and excellent stability in harsh conditions have been devised and explored for applications in light-emitting diodes (LEDs), X-ray scintillators, multimodal anti-counterfeiting, and fluorescent sensing. In this review, the latest advancements in the development of OIMnHs as efficient light-emitting materials are summarized, which covers from their fundamental physicochemical properties to advanced optoelectronic applications, with an emphasis on the structural and functionality design especially for LEDs and X-ray detection and imaging. Current challenges and future efforts to unlock the potentials of these promising materials are also envisioned.

Solution Synthesis and Light-Emitting Applications of One-Dimensional Lead-Free Cerium(III) Metal Halides

Combining rare earth elements with the halide perovskite structure offers valuable insights into designing nonlead (Pb) luminescent materials. However, most of these compositions tend to form zero-dimensional (0D) networks of metal-halide polyhedra, with higher-dimensional (1D, 2D, and 3D) structures receiving relatively less exploration. Herein, we present synthesis and optical properties of Cs3CeCl6·3H2O, characterized by its unique 1D crystal structure. The conduction band minimum of Cs3CeCl6·3H2O becomes less localized as a result of the increased structural dimension, making it possible for the materials to achieve an efficient electrical injection. For both Cs3CeCl6·3H2O single crystals and nanocrystals, we also observed remarkable luminescence with near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield and exceptional phase stability. Cs3CeCl6·3H2O single crystals demonstrate an X-ray scintillation light yield of 31900 photons/MeV, higher than that of commercial LuAG:Ce (22000 photons/MeV); electrically driven light-emitting diodes fabricated with Cs3CeCl6·3H2O nanocrystals yield the characteristic emission of Ce3+, indicating their potential use in next-generation violet-light-emitting devices.

Photoluminescence Enhancement of 0D Organic-Inorganic Metal Halides via Aggregation-Induced Emission and Halide Substitution

0D organic-inorganic metal halides (OIMHs) provide unprecedented versatility in structures and photoluminescence properties. Here, a series of bluish-white emissive 0D OIMHs, (TPE-TPP)2Sb2BrxCl8-x (x = 1.16 to 8), are prepared by assembling the 1-triphenylphosphonium-4-(1,2,2-triphenylethenyl)benzene cation (TPE-TPP)+ with antimony halides anions. Based on experimental characterizations and theoretical calculations, the emission of the 0D OIMHs are attributed to the fluorescence of the organic cations with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties. The 0D structure minimized the molecular motion and intermolecular interactions between (TPE-TPP)+ cations, effectively suppressing the non-radiative recombination processes. Consequently, the photoluminescence quantum efficiency (PLQE) of (TPE-TPP)2Sb2Br1.16Cl6.84 is significantly enhanced to 55.4% as compared to the organic salt (TPE-TPP)Br (20.5%). The PLQE of (TPE-TPP)2Sb2BrxCl8-x can also be readily manipulated by halide substitution, due to the competitive processes between non-radiative recombination on the inorganic moiety and the energy transfer from inorganic to organic. In addition, electrically driven light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are fabricated based on (TPE-TPP)2Sb2Br1.16Cl6.84 emitter, which exhibited bluish-white emission with a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 1.1% and luminance of 335 cd m-2. This is the first report of electrically driven LED based on 0D OIMH with bluish-white emission.

Highly Selective Protic-Solvent-Mediated Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Cuprous Bromides Achieving Structural Transformation

The potential application of stimuli-responsive hybrid copper halides in information storage and switch devices has generated significant interest. However, their transformation mechanism needs to be further studied deeply. Herein, two zero-dimensional (0D) organic-inorganic hybrids, namely, (TBA)CuBr2 (1) with linear [CuBr2]- units and (TBA)2Cu4Br6 (2) with [Cu4Br6]2- clusters (TBA+ = (C4H9)4N+), are synthesized using simple solvent evaporation approaches. Interestingly, upon exposure to distinct protic solvents, such as methanol, ethanol, ethylene glycol, or hot water, 1 undergoes a transformation into 2 with varying degrees of transition, accompanied by a change in luminescence color from cyan to orange (or mixed color) under high-energy emission (e.g., 254 nm) excitation. Hot water can trigger 1 to completely transform into 2 because of its large contact angle difference in the solvents. Furthermore, 2 can be converted back to 1 through a simple solid-state mechanochemical reaction. Additionally, the structure of 2 remains unchanged even after immersion in 80 °C H2O for 168 h due to the dense organic framework. This study provides valuable insights for exploring reversible structural transformation materials in the 0D metal halide system.

Efficient Large-Area (81 cm2) Ternary Copper Halides Light-Emitting Diodes with External Quantum Efficiency Exceeding 13% via Host-Guest Strategy

Ternary copper (Cu) halides are promising candidates for replacing toxic lead halides in the field of perovskite light-emitting diodes (LEDs) toward practical applications. However, the electroluminescent performance of Cu halide-based LEDs remains a great challenge due to the presence of serious nonradiative recombination and inefficient charge transport in Cu halide emitters. Here, the rational design of host-guest [dppb]2Cu2I2 (dppb denotes 1,2-bis[diphenylphosphino]benzene) emitters and its utility in fabricating efficient Cu halide-based green LEDs that show a high external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 13.39% are reported. The host-guest [dppb]2Cu2I2 emitters with mCP (1,3-bis(N-carbazolyl)benzene) host demonstrate a significant improvement of carrier radiative recombination efficiency, with the photoluminescence quantum yield increased by nearly ten times, which is rooted in the efficient energy transfer and type-I energy level alignment between [dppb]2Cu2I2 and mCP. Moreover, the charge-transporting mCP host can raise the carrier mobility of [dppb]2Cu2I2 films, thereby enhancing the charge transport and recombination. More importantly, this strategy enables a large-area prototype LED with a record-breaking area up to 81 cm2, along with a decent EQE of 10.02% and uniform luminance. It is believed these results represent an encouraging stepping stone to bring Cu halide-based LEDs from the laboratory toward commercial lighting and display panels.

Centimeter-Sized Single Crystals of Tetrahedral Manganese (II) Halide Hybrids for Wide-Color Gamut Backlighting Displays

Phosphors with narrow-band green emissions and high photoluminescent quantum efficiency (PLQY) are significantly required for backlighting displays with wider color gamut. In this work, two centimeter-sized manganese (II) halide single crystals TMG2MnCl4 and TMG2MnBr4 (TMG = 1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidine) are synthesized, exhibiting bright narrow-band green emissions with high PLQYs up to 62% and 90%, respectively. The narrow-band green light emission is located at 520 nm with a full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) of only 57 nm. The photoluminescence mechanisms of two single crystals are elaborated. Two white-light-emitting diodes for backlighting displays (BD-WLEDs) based on them are fabricated, exhibiting the widest color gamut of 122% National Television Standards Committee (NTSC), and a luminous efficacy reached ≈93 lm W-1 with excellent luminescence stability at high temperatures. These properties indicate the potential applications of tetrahedral manganese (II) hybrids in wide-color gamut backlighting displays.

Excitation-Selective and Double-Emissive Lead-Free Binary Hybrid Metal Halides for White Light-Emitting Diode and X-Ray Scintillation

Zero-dimensional (0D) organic metal halides comprising heterogeneous metal cations in single phase can achieve multiple luminous emissions enabling them toward multifunctional light-emitting applications. Herein, A novel single crystal of (C8H20N)4SbMnCl9 containing two luminescent centers of [SbCl5]2- pentahedrons and [MnCl4]2- tetrahedrons is reported. The large distance between Sb-Sb, Mn-Mn, and Sb-Mn as well as theory calculation indicate negligible interaction between individual centers, thus endowing (C8H20N)4SbMnCl9 with excitation-dependable and efficient luminescence. Under near-UV excitation, only orange emission originates from self-trapped excitons recombination in [SbCl5]2- pentahedron occurs with photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 91.5%. Under blue-light excitation, only green emission originating from 4T1-6A1 transition of Mn2+ in [MnCl4]2- tetrahedrons occurs with PLQY of 66.8%. Interestingly, upon X-ray illumination, both emissions can be fully achieved due to the high-energy photon absorption. Consequently, (C8H20N)4SbMnCl9 is employed as phosphors to fabricate white light-emitting diodes optically pumped by n-UV chip and blue-chip thanks to its excitation-dependable property. Moreover, it also shows promising performance as X-ray scintillator with low detection limit of 60.79 nGyair S-1, steady-state light yield ≈54% of commerical scintillaotr LuAG:Ce, high resolution of 13.5 lp mm-1 for X-ray imaging. This work presents a new structural design to fabricate 0D hybrids with multicolor emissions.

Temperature-Induced Reversible Photoluminescence Switching and Ultraviolet-Pumped Light-Emitting Diode Applications of a Perovskite (C6H10N2)2MnCl6·2H2O Crystal

Zero-dimensional (0D) organic-inorganic hybrid halides present many fascinating photophysical properties for promising optoelectronic applications such as light-emitting diodes (LEDs), X-ray imaging, photodetectors, and anticounterfeiting. Herein, a centimeter-sized single crystal (C6H10N2)2MnCl6·2H2O with a 0D perovskite structure was obtained via a solvent evaporation method. A bright red emission at 618 nm with a larger Stokes shift of more than 300 nm and a long fluorescence lifetime of 6.21 ms were measured. Notably, a reversible PL switching from red emission to nonluminescence has been presented in the cycles of heating-cooling processes from RT to 100 °C. Furthermore, the temperature-induced luminescence shows a quick recovery after 20 conversion cycles, exhibiting excellent stability and temperature sensing. According to the structural and theoretical analyses, the temperature-induced luminescence is primarily due to hydrogen-bonding interactions between (MnCl6)4- and H2O molecules. Particularly, a temperature anticounterfeiting application has been designed based on its reversible temperature-dependent PL switching. Importantly, the ultraviolet-pumped LEDs fabricated by (C6H10N2)2MnCl6·2H2O single crystals are perfectly achieved. Anyway, this work clearly demonstrates that 0D Mn-based perovskite with temperature-dependent PL switching greatly extends its potential applications in electro-optical display, temperature sensing, and anticounterfeiting devices.

Pseudo-2D Layered Organic-Inorganic Manganese Bromide with a Near-Unity Photoluminescence Quantum Yield for White Light-Emitting Diode and X-Ray Scintillator

Eco-friendly lead-free organic-inorganic manganese halides (OIMHs) have attracted considerable attention in various optoelectronic applications because of their superior optical properties and flexible solution processibility. Herein, we report a novel pseudo-2D layered OIMH (MTP)2 MnBr4 (MTP: methyltriphenylphosphonium), which exhibits intense green emission under UV/blue or X-ray excitation, with a near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield, high resistance to thermal quenching (I150 °C =84.1 %) and good photochemical stability. These features enable (MTP)2 MnBr4 as an efficient green phosphor for blue-converted white light-emitting diodes, demonstrating a commercial-level luminous efficiency of 101 lm W-1 and a wide color gamut of 116 % NTSC. Moreover, these (MTP)2 MnBr4 crystals showcase outstanding X-ray scintillation properties, delivering a light yield of 67000 photon MeV-1 , a detection limit of 82.4 nGy s-1 , and a competitive spatial resolution of 6.2 lp mm-1 for X-ray imaging. This work presents a new avenue for the exploration of eco-friendly luminescent OIMHs towards multifunctional light-emitting applications.

Recent Advances and Opportunities of Eco-Friendly Ternary Copper Halides: A New Superstar in Optoelectronic Applications

Recently, the newly-emerging lead-free metal-halide materials with less toxicity and superior optoelectronic properties have received wide attention as the safer and potentially more robust alternatives to lead-based perovskite counterparts. Among them, ternary copper halides (TCHs) have become a vital group due to their unique features, including abundant structural diversity, ease of synthesis, unprecedented optoelectronic properties, high abundance, and low cost. Although the recent efforts in this field have made certain progresses, some scientific and technological issues still remain unresolved. Herein, a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of recent progress on the fundamental characteristics of TCH materials and their versatile applications is presented, which contains topics such as: i) crystal and electronic structure features and synthesis strategies; ii) mechanisms of self-trapped excitons, luminescence regulation, and environmental stability; and iii) their burgeoning optoelectronic devices of phosphor-converted white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs), electroluminescent LEDs, anti-counterfeiting, X-ray scintillators, photodetectors, sensors, and memristors. Finally, the current challenges together with future perspectives on the development of TCH materials and applications are also critically described, which is considered to be critical for accelerating the commercialization of these rapidly evolving technologies.

A ligand strategy retarding monovalent copper oxidation toward achieving Cs3Cu2I5 perovskite emitters with enhanced stability for lighting

0D copper-based perovskites (Cs3Cu2I5) have fascinating optical properties, such as strong exciton binding energy, high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and large Stokes shifts from self-trapped excitons (STEs), which make them highly considerable candidates in the field of lighting. However, the stability of Cs3Cu2I5 is compromised by the oxidation of Cu+ to Cu2+ during the storage or operation process. Here, we proposed a ligand engineering strategy to improve the stability of Cs3Cu2I5via an organic molecule (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, EDTA) with multiple functional groups. The strong interaction between carboxyl groups and Cu+ was evidenced through FTIR and XPS, and it could retard monovalent copper oxidation. After storing for 90 days, the EDTA-engineered Cs3Cu2I5 (EDTA-Cs3Cu2I5) maintained its original crystalline structure, while the control Cs3Cu2I5 exhibited an impurity phase. Through quantitative analysis, the content of Cu2+ in EDTA-Cs3Cu2I5 was found to be 83.9% lower than that in control Cs3Cu2I5. Benefiting from the inhibition of Cu+ oxidation, EDTA-Cs3Cu2I5 exhibited improved light emission stability. For example, the optimized EDTA-Cs3Cu2I5 retained 74.7% of the initial photoluminescence (PL) intensity after 90-day storage under ambient conditions, while the pure Cs3Cu2I5 retained only 41.7%. Furthermore, EDTA could passivate defects and enhance the PL properties of the optimized Cs3Cu2I5, which showed a PLQY of 94.7%, much higher than that of 71.4% for pure Cs3Cu2I5. We further constructed a WLED based on the EDTA-engineered Cs3Cu2I5, which showed CIE at (0.3238, 0.3354), a CRI of 91.7, and a T50 of 361 h. The proposed EDTA ligand strategy provides a new way to regulate the light-emitting properties and stabilities of Cs3Cu2I5 for future industrialization.

Atomic-scale imaging of ytterbium ions in lead halide perovskites

Lanthanide-doped lead halide perovskites have demonstrated great potential for photoelectric applications. However, there is a long-standing controversy about the existence of lanthanide ions, e.g., whether the doping of Ln3+ is successful or not; the substituting sites of Ln3+ in lead halide perovskites are unclear. We directly identify the doped Yb3+ in CsPbCl3 perovskites by using the state-of-the-art transmission electron microscopy and three-dimensional atom probe tomography at atomic scale. Different from the previous assumptions and/or results, we evidence that Yb3+ simultaneously replace Pb2+ and occupy the lattice interstitial sites. Furthermore, we directly observe the cluster phenomenon of CsPbCl3 single crystal at near atomic scale. Density functional theory modeling further confirms and explains the mechanisms of our findings. Our findings thus provide an atomic-level understanding of the doping mechanism in perovskites and will stimulate a further thinking of the doping effect on the performance of perovskites.

Polyacrylonitrile Passivation for Enhancing the Optoelectronic Switching Performance of Halide Perovskite Memristor for Image Boolean Logic Applications

For the CH3NH3PbI3-based optoelectronic memristor, the high ion-migration randomness induces high fluctuation in the resistive switching (RS) parameters. Grain boundaries (GBs) are well known as the ion-migration sites due to their low energy barrier. Herein, a polyacrylonitrile (PAN) passivation method is developed to reduce GBs of the CH3NH3PbI3 film and improve the switching uniformity of the memristor. The crystal grain size of CH3NH3PbI3 increases with the addition of PAN, and the corresponding number of GBs is consequently reduced. The fluctuations of the RS parameters of the memristor device are significantly reduced. With the memristor, nonvolatile image sensing, image memory, and image Boolean operations are demonstrated. This work proposes a strategy for developing high-performance CH3NH3PbI3 optoelectronic memristors.

One-Dimensional Hybrid Copper(I) Iodide Single Crystal with Renewable Scintillation Properties

Low-dimensional hybrid copper(I) halides attract considerable attention in the field of light emissions. In this work, we obtained the centimeter-sized single crystal of 1,3-propanediamine copper(I) iodide (PDACuI₃) with a solvent evaporation method. The single crystal X-ray diffraction of PDACuI₃ reveals that the [CuI₄] tetrahedra form the corner-connected chains separated by PDAs, forming a one-dimensional structure with an orthorhombic space group of Pbca. The band gap is determined to be 4.03 eV, and the room temperature photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield is determined to be 26.5%. The thermal quenching and negative thermal quenching of emission are observed via temperature-dependent PL spectra, and our study shows that the intermediate nonradiative state below the self-trapped exciton state may get involved in these temperature-dependent behaviors. The X-ray scintillation performance of PDACuI₃ single crystals is also evaluated, and the relative light output renewed to 94.3% of the fresh one after a low-temperature annealing. On the basis of our results, PDACuI₃ single crystals provide nontoxicity and renewable scintillation performance, thus showing potential application in the area of low-cost radiation detectors.

Photophysical studies for Cu(i)-based halides: broad excitation bands and highly efficient single-component warm white-light-emitting diodes

Designing and synthesizing cuprous halide phosphors unifying efficient low-energy emission and a broad excitation band is still a great challenge. Herein, by rational component design, three novel Cu(i)-based metal halides, DPCu₄X₆ [DP = (C₆H₁₀N₂)₄(H₂PO₂)₆; X = Cl, Br, I], were synthesized by reacting p-phenylenediamine with cuprous halide (CuX), and they show similar structures, consisting of isolated [Cu₄X₆]^2- units separated by organic layers. Photophysical studies uncover that the highly localized excitons and rigid environment give rise to highly efficient yellow-orange photoluminescence in all compounds with the excitation band spanning from 240 to 450 nm. The bright PL in DPCu₄X₆ (X = Cl, Br) originates from self-trapped excitons due to the strong electron-phonon coupling. Intriguingly, DPCu₄I₆ features a dual-band emissive characteristic, attributed to the synergistic effect of halide/metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (X/MLCT) and triplet cluster-centered (³CC) excited states. Benefiting from the broadband excitation, a high-performance white-light emitting diode (WLED) with a high color rendering index of 85.1 was achieved using single-component DPCu₄I₆ phosphor. This work not only unveils the role of halogens in the photophysical processes of cuprous halides, but also provides new design principles for high-performance single-component WLEDs.

Solvent-Free Grinding Synthesis of Hybrid Copper Halides for White Light Emission

Lead-free metal halides (LMHs) have recently attracted numerous attention in solid-state lighting due to their unique structures and outstanding optoelectronic properties. However, conventional preparation processes with the utilization of toxic organic solvents and high temperatures seem to impede commercial applications of LMHs. In this work, we successfully synthesize Cu⁺-based metal halides (TMA)₃Cu₂Br_5-xCl_x (TMA: tetramethylammonium) with high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) via a solvent-free mechanical grinding method. By changing the ratio of halide ions (Cl^- and Br^-) in precursors, the emission wavelength of the prepared (TMA)₃Cu₂Br_5-xCl_x can be tuned from 535 to 587 nm, which are employed as emitters in the fabrication of white-light-emitting diodes (WLEDs). The achieved WLEDs exhibit a high color rendering index value of 84 and standard Commission Internationale de l'Éclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.324, 0.333). This feasible and solvent-free preparation strategy not only promotes the mass production of LMHs but also highlights the promising potential for efficient solid-state illumination.

Tailoring the high-brightness "warm" white light emission of two-dimensional perovskite crystals via a pressure-inhibited nonradiative transition

Efficient warm white light emission is an ideal characteristic of single-component materials for light-emitting applications. Although two-dimensional hybrid perovskites are promising candidates for light-emitting diodes, as they possess broadband self-trapped emission and outstanding stability, they rarely achieve a high photoluminescence quantum yield of warm white light emissions. Here, an unusual pressure-induced warm white emission enhancement phenomenon from 2.1 GPa to 9.9 GPa was observed in two-dimensional perovskite (2meptH2)PbCl4, accompanied by a large increase in the relative quantum yield of photoluminescence. The octahedral distortions, accompanied with the evolution of organic cations, triggered the structural collapse, which caused the sudden emission enhancement at 2.1 GPa. Afterwards, the further intra-octahedral collapse promotes the formation of self-trapped excitons and the substantial suppression of nonradiative transitions are responsible for the continuous pressure-induced photoluminescence enhancement. This study not only clearly illustrates the relationship between crystal structure and photoluminescence, but also provides an experimental basis for the synthesis of high-quality warm white light-emitting 2D metal halide perovskite materials.

Stable self-trapped broadband emission from an organolead halide coordination polymer with strong layer corrugation and high chemical robustness

Layered lead halide coordination polymers are an emerging class of stable self-trapped emitters, in which the unique corrugated structure are critical to afford out-of-plane distortions for self-trapping.
